Really knows his stuff!!
wouldn't help with questions, and assumes way too much about a persons education
The only good math teacher at svsu!
doesn't like to explain something when asked about it..good teacher though
Note to Tom: We have other classes to do HW for!
I think my IQ dropped after his class
Kind of jumps around and confuses you, but not too bad.
Ewww.... I didnt like him at all.. the kansas accent makes it a lil' hard to understand sometimes. And Tom.. it is greater than not bigger than.
I found that he was pretty nice and wasnt that bad of a math teacher
He's a really good teacher but gets a bad rap because the material is pretty hard (it's calc 2 for god's sake). Students that don't like him are the ones that simply don't study enough.
Horrible teacher. Teaches at his own pace with disregard for students undestanding. Also IGNORES students questions in class.
Zerger is the reason I got an A in calc 2. He is an awsome teacher.
He was awesome. Very friendly, nice and granted his jokes werent funny, he was cool. Great teacher!
This class might be for beginners, but he does not make you feel stupid. He understands you are there to refresh or to get better comprehension Great Teacher!!
tough class, expected to already know a lot. very helpful. curves great, since i don't know how i pulled off a C in that class
Great math professor, my favorite so far. Make sure you keep up with the homework (even though most of it is NOT turned in), it will help out a lot. Gives a study guide for each exam, go through the exam study guide and you are pretty much set.
Challenging class. Go to his office hours and he'll help you! If you do the suggested hw problems, you should set. Zerger is one of the better math profs I've had @ SVSU. English is his native language, and he explains everything.
Laid back guy, really nice. I thought this class would be a breeze and it isn't. Test questions are worth a lot of points each so its easy to get a bad grade on them. He'll help though if you ask him to. Nice guy, I'm not sorry I took him.
He is hard, but I learned a lot in the class. He explains things in a way that you can understand.
I needed this class as a refresher and Zerger was awesome. Always took time to answer any questions from hw, especially before a test. He explains on a level that all can comprehend. Does not make you feel stupid to be in a entry level math class.
Overall he is a good guy and professor. He teaches well, is slow enough but not too slow. He keeps things challanging but then goes over everything. Very thorough (spelling.) Enjoyed his class, but watch out. He is a pacer and fidgety.
zerger rocks! anyone who's had any other math prof at svsu should appreciate how great zerger is compared to them. math is a hard subject, if you didn't pass his class, you probably didn't work hard enough.
I liked Zerger alot. He has to be the best Math prof at SVSU. He helps in all ways possible. You have to put forth the effort, but if you do you'll do great in the class! Take him if you can!
Very good guy. His test questions are a little confusing but if you study you will do fine.
Very organized, if you have a question, he will cover it even if you never ask. He forsees everything you might have a problem with and is able to cover it without making anyone feel stupid. Not a pushover though, if he assigns something, he expects it
I really liked his teaching style. He goes at a pace the class will understand the material. The tests are difficult but manageable as long as you do the homework there aren't any surprises.
He is an awesome guy who keeps an upbeat attitude in a math class. Best math professor at SVSU. Will help you on anything you need if you ask after class or in his office. Do the homework and the tests are just like them.
He's a really nice guy and will help if you ask but sometimes that makes it worse. For those who suck at math, he isn't that great at bringing it down to your level. What's good is, he will give time in class for questions on homework. Make sure you do them and ask questions! That helps to understand material. Tests can be hard. Study study study!!
he is a hard teacher. The tests are terrible. he expects everyone to know the stuff and skips things when teaching. He assumes everyone remembers things from math class years ago. not a class to take int he spring/summer unless you are real good at math. I have never had so many headaches as I did in that class.
all I can say is he is very hard
This is the worst instructor I have ever had at Saginaw Valley. I am working on my second bacheolor degree and I am a senior now. I have taken numerous courses at Saginaw Valley. Don't get me wrong, this teacher is intelligent, but he cannot teach. I think that he should work in some other speciality because of his lack of teaching skills.
I thought Zerger was great. It is a difficult class, but he will help you with anything. If you put the time in and ask for help you will do fine. The people who are crying on here are probably the people who suck at math or didn't work very hard. I took his class about 8 years ago, and am now a math teacher myself. He does a great job.
Abstract Geometry--well of course it is a hard class. But Zerger made the class enjoyable and fun. (didn't think the middle exam was all that fun though). Willing to help if you ask, and very personable. Take any and all math classes that he teaches!!!!!!!
Though tough and nit picky, Zerger is an excellent prof.. He is always willing to answer any question that you have and very helpful during his office hours. He is willing to make arrangements to meet outside of office hours also. He does go through material quickly and you have to keep up. If you're not gifted in Math, I would not recommend him.
Good prof!! Very clear in explanations. Tries to make things as easy as possible. Standardized class so can't really give extra credit. Homework due or quiz every week, but they help build points and you can drop the lowest 2 scores. If you do the suggested problems and ask questions you should be fine. I would take him again!
By far the best math professor I have had, very helpful and very clear, grading is fair. You need to work in his class, but as with any math class in college you have to work in order to keep up. If at all possible take him.
One of the better math teachers at SVSU. Tests are difficult, but is willing to answer questions. Grade based on quizzes (hard) and tests. Some homework handed in.
He gives out notes in class, so class time is very important! He understands a lot.
He is really good ;)
Excellent prof, very nice and extremely helpful. Hes lenient on grading, he really wants everyone in the class to succeed, but he wont just hand it to you. Gives well in depth review sheets before each test. He knows his math and knows how to teach it, its up to the student at that point. I'm taking my next math class with him next semester.
Great teacher. Thorough understanding of and enthusiastic about mathematics. Should split into three tests and a final. Too much material covered on the two tests given. Not enough time and hard to remember it all. Final was comprehensive and fair. Rekindled my love for math!
I have not found a Math Department instructor at SVSU that I like. And stay far away from the tutors!
He is probably the only decent math professor at SVSU. Any SVSU student knows that is extremely rare. He is really very smart. He tries to help he students but sometimes I think it is hard for him to understand that not everyone gets math. Nonetheless he put up with me in his office like everyday asking questions. if you need to take math take him!
I could never pay attention to him. He is really nice but has this annoying nervous laugh...Ugh. And he's really smart but I don't think he realizes that other people aren't good at math so he just kind of breezes through and expects that you know. However, if you do the practice problems you should do fine on the exams.
You will work hard in this class to get the grade you want. He is willing to help you if you need help. Don't wait to get help if you need it. Also the tutoring center is helpful if you get the right tutor. Don't fall behind in this class. Once you understand it the class really isn't that bad.
He did a great job of teaching class, you just had to come to class, if you missed one class you were behind. Only people that failed were ones that didn't come to class. Very helpful.
Zerger is one of the better math profs. He isn't the easiest but usually gives you a significant curve on the tests. Lots of quizzes which can be tricky (but you get to drop 2). Very helpful out of class. Really knows his stuff.
Zerger is definitely one of the better math profs at SV. I definitely did not think the class was hard. There are quizzes throughout the semester and then there are 3 exams and a final exam. The exams usually have some problems that are extra credit. He gives really good notes which I think is a huge deal when it comes to a math class.
Very good professor. He conveys the material in a way that makes sense. He was respectful and reasonable.
One of the better professors in the math dept. Somewhat difficult but you learn a ton
The class itself is a lot of work but if you keep up with your homework its not that bad. 3 exams, 10 quizzes, and the final. Exams are moderate, but not too difficult if you study.
His lectures were very helpful and explained concisely for a student to comprehend the material very well. His assignments and exams can be tricky, but if you study well, you should be fine. The challenging nature of this professor helped me learn the content much better. I would recommend this professor if you have the chance.
This class was pretty tough, but if you are willing to work and actually try, you will be fine. Zerger really wants to help you learn so if you are attentive, you will learn a lot.
This class is okay, it could be better, he doesnt check his email all the time so sometimes it is hard to get a hold of him. Otherwise good teacher with many explanaitions and examples. if you pay attention and care you will be fine
Well, he is an amazing instructor and person but when I comes to teaching magh, he can't. I always excelled in math, but taking his class I had to work extremely hard to maintain a C,about 75% of his class can be found in the math resource room trying to have the tutors explain the material because he can't, his quizzes and tests, extremely hard
Life comes to a complete stop when he walks through the door. The man is horribly boring and cannot teach the material that he clearly understands. Take a different stats prof or this will be the most dreaded hours of your week. Tests cover too much material and take the full 2 hours for almost every student
Zerger is a good teacher. He gives easy to understand examples and walks through problems with you at a rate which you can understand. Exams are challenging but not impossible. I got an A in his class, with some extra hours of studying.
He's a super nice guy and his class isn't too hard at all. Just make sure you go to class and pay attention and you'll do good on your tests.
Extremely helpful, homework is hard but you can get help on it. Tests and quizzes are easier. Go to class, take notes, ask questions and youll be fine
Zerger was a really tough professor but he is also a very good one. I really had to work hard to do well in his class but it really paid off and I learned so much.
This class was challenging, but Zerger was good. He gave hard quizes that were done at home, but the he tells you what to study and what will be on the exams. I'd definitely take him again.
Zerger is awesome. Calc II is hard, but Zerger was understanding and fair. Take-home quizzes are hard, but in class tests/quizzes are significantly easier (so if you can do the quizzes, you can do the tests). Also curves quite a bit. Would take again.
Zerger is great at making sure you understand things before moving on. Don't be afraid to ask questions! Sometimes he assumes everyone understands after he speeds through one or two examples, but if you ask him to slow down, he will. Really smart guy, very nice too. The class moves quickly so don't get behind. Do most of the optional homework!
Zerger helped students as long as they asked questions, don't be afraid to. As long as you come to class and pay attention you will be fine. Very nice professor who does his job well.
He helped me clarify issues with Matrices that I had trouble with in high school precalc. Don't let these ratings fool you; don't assume that you'll pass his class without effort just because you're known to be good at math. But his assignments were too time consuming; practice with them, and you'll do very well.
zerger is a great prof. i learned so much from him. he's clearly very smart and knows his material well. always willing to help and is very helpful if you go to his office hours. he also curves a lot so thats a plus. definitely recommend
LONGGGGG hard homework assignments. Will make you work hard in calc 3. Very hard grader and not much help outside of class. Will not give any extra credit or anyway to bump up your grade. Hard concepts and of your not willing to devote 100% of your studying time do not take.
Zerger is a very nice guy but his homework "quizzes" are nearly impossible. There were many times where none of the tutors could figure out the problems after days. His lectures can tend to be a little boring. He made Calc 3 much harder than it needed to be, I had a very difficult time in this class and I am a math major.
Mr. Zerger is a very nice man, but I do not think I'd take his class again. Extra credit is VERY rare in his class. He moves really fast during the lectures and is sometimes hard to follow. His exams are very tough. Just a very hard class in general.
He is a really nice guy, but he is not the best if you are not confident in your mathematical abilities, like I am. Your grade is based off of take-home quizzes (which are very hard and time consuming) and exams. Apparently he gives out a lot of extra credit, but I never got any opportunities for it.
I have had Zerg for 3 separate math classes at SVSU, and while I'm not good at math, I loved him. He knows his stuff and is always willing to help both in class and outside of class. His quizzes and homework are harder than the tests, and often the tests are just the quizzes with different numbers so study from those.
Worst math/stat professor I ever had. Goes too fast and acts like we know all the stats terminology. Doesn't really engage the class, and just writes a ton of stuff without really explaining it. He seems like real nice guy but as a teacher, he's not the best. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Professor Zerger wasn't the most entertaining professor. I found myself zoning out during his lectures. However, he is very helpful and willing to answer all of your questions in or out of class. He wants you to succeed. Show up to class, do the homework, study the content, and you will be fine.
TOM, oh boy. Don't expect to succeed unless you have prior stats knowledge. He just writes a bunch of equations on the board all hour with little to no explanation. BE WARNED tests and exams may only be 6 questions long but have MULTIPLE parts to them. While he can be reached in office hours, he just repeats the question and expects you to get it.
he was such a boring lecturer and extremely hard to get in touch with. I had a hard time with math and he didn't give help me when I asked for help. I wouldn't recommend.
Tom is probably about average in terms of teaching skill, BUT he is about the nicest guy in the world. He is great about giving partial credit on quizzes and tests, and he curves exams frequently. Very approachable guy, and tries his best to help when he can. I would take him again if I had any more math classes.
Tom is one of the nicest teachers I've had so far at SVSU and seems like he wants his students to succeed. His fault, however, is that he teaches the content in a way where he expects you to think like he does. The homework will take you many hours, sometimes just for one problem, and his tests are complicatedly worded. Expect to teach yourself.
Calc 2 is brutal, but with Zerger it's doable. He gives partial credit just for attempting problems, and he curves exams. His take home quizzes and webworks assignments are harder than his actual exams, but he still gives lots of partial credit on the quizzes. Some chapters he explains better than others, but still an overall great prof.
After having finished through differential equations I can say that Calc 2 is by far the worst, but Zerger made it tolerable. His lectures could seem a bit long, but he taught the material well. His exams were pretty tough and his take-home problems could take more than 4-5 hours for a 3 question quiz, but other than that I really liked Zerger.
Isn't great at explaining anything. One of those professors who thinks you know as much as he does, skips steps while doing work on the board. His whole teaching style is just examples to be honest. I had no idea what was going on most of the time. Online notes don't explain much either. Khan Academy and other online tools will be your friend.
Calc was one of the hardest classes for me. I spent a long time in the tutoring center and set aside time every day to do homework. Dr. Zerger expects a lot from you but is one of the nicest professors. He is always willing to help and answer questions. The best way to pass his class is by asking him questions and doing the homework.
Exams were always super difficult because they were so much harder than the assignments he did with us in class. Also, homework was graded by what you got right, not by completion. I had a very difficult time in this class because I started getting so lost that I just shut down. He's a great professor and very caring just makes tests/quizzes hard
His lectures are really boring, and he will skip steps. Review the chapter section before you go to class. He is an awesome dude, and he really does care about his students. You have to put a lot of work in, it is calculus. But he is great in his office hours if you ever need help. And he learns your name which I always love.
The pace this class was taught at was horrible. He moves extremely fast and does not offer time in class to ask questions. His office hours are also not helpful because he explains things assuming you already know them. Would not take again, had to try extremely hard on this course and still struggled. Not considerate of people with jobs.
Professor Zerger was good, he curves exams and is very open to helping. Learning Latex and doing homework started to become a struggle though
His lectures are full of content, and he doesn't ramble like other teachers will. You will learn a lot in one lecture and you will have homework almost every week. There are 4 exams in total. But considering the reputation of the math department at SVSU, Zerger is probably the best teacher you could get out of all of them.
Dr. Zerger actually cares that you understand the course material. He will challenge your math skills in the homework, but the tests are usually pretty laid back, comparatively. Ask lots of questions; he always has well thought out answers. However, try not to miss class; it could be detrimental to your learning.
Dr. Zerger challenges his students on hw but is always willing to help out if you don't understand something. He cares about his students, and exams are usually a lot lighter than hw, but are weighted heavily. He rushed through some things, but was always willing to clarify in office hours. Overall, it was a good class, but challenging at points.
