HARD MARKER.He's a great person and I understanding where he is coming from, but the marking he does is ridiculous. The entire class failed the first in-class essay exam, and he said he would take into account this was our first essay exam and that we had 50min to formulate a literary analysis on 2 short stories.
Really hard marker. Awesome guy, and encourages you to come see him durring office hours for help. His expectation for students in first year english is very high.
He's a good guy. He'll answer your question to the best of his ability, but he's just an incredibly hard marker.
SO UNORGANIZED AND RUSHES thru the material
He expects just above Grade 12 level writing. Tries to be as helpful as he can, and as long as you keep in mind what he asks for, it should be an easy B. Work harder for an A.
Really nice guy and very helpful. Very slow turn around time for assignments.
Good teacher! I just had to drop cause I knew everything already and it wasn't a required course for me to graduate.
Great person to take an English class with. Definitely not a 2.0 marker. However, he does take attendance and will dock marks off for late assignments. All and all good overall teacher.
Okay, so here's the thing; Thor is actually a really great teacher. I don't really get the low ratings. Is he a hard marker? Not at all, he's a FAIR maker who encourages his students to improve by giving honest and helpful feedback. If you're struggling ask for help! It's not like he wants his students to fail - he wants to set them up for success.
Extremely down to earth instructor who makes the material interesting. Super helpful and if you you make the effort to ask him questions and understand the criteria for each assignment, then you will do well. Attendance is regularly taken, however, and if you have a habit of missing lots of classes then you won't succeed in his class
I really liked Thor, his class was very interesting and I learned a lot about interpreting subtleties in short stories. Unfortunately he spent very little time in class teaching us how to actually write, and this is reflected in the grades received on assignments. Great guy, would love to get a beer with him but he's a tough marker. I worked hard.
Very quite class, I suggest he play music after sudden silence during the lecture. Am I the first person to write comment for his summer term 2:30-3:30 1127 section? Good luck with finals guys! .. (Thor.. please mark our final with extra lift...)
Thor is an awesome, helpful, and outgoing professor! From taking his class, I gained a lot of knowledge and understood the inner meanings of short stories, articles, and novels through the "close-reading" discussions. I can tell he is loved by other students as well. I definitely recommend people to take his class(es)!
Thor is an awesome teacher. It really shows that he wants to help the students succeed. I learned how to enjoy and interpret short stories. I suggest you to go to every class and take good notes which will help you further into the course. Overall, he is a pretty fair marker.
Thor really wants his student to succeed in his class, but you need to work for it. His marking is fair and will always give you additional feedback/criticism if you ask for it. Attend class, participate in discussions and you will do well. BE VOCAL
didnt care about the class.
He was very easy to follow. Is clear and concise. Makes learning English fun. He engages with the class.
i really dont understand how thor has a positive rating on this site. it must be from students who already excelled in english before his class because he does not guide students in their writing. he would rather have students talk amongst themselves then teach something practical. i would avoid.

Awesome teacher! Not easy, but not hard. Effort will result in a good mark. He's interesting, smart, and fun to listen to. He cares about his students. First in-class essay is killer, but you do better later on. If you're looking for an easy A, this isn't the course for you! If you want to learn and have fun, then go for it! It was my fav class! :)
I had high expectations for this courses after reading positive reviews, I was wrong. Thor is a hard marker and can be picky. Attendance is super mandatory, if you miss class he takes it off your participation grade. He's a stickler for that as well accepting late assignments. Lots of in class group discussiona. I didn't like English with him.
thor is an ok teacher at best. i recommend looking for someone else
VERY HARD marker, if you're not really strong in writing essays, i don't recommend him! kills your GPA.. he's very nice and has a good sense of humour though. Attendance & participation is mandatory! lots of reading assigned and in class discussions.
Worst experience ever! even though he's nice &funny, he's a very hard marker! if you're not a big fan of english don't take Thor, you may get an F.
Regret taking this course with him. he marks way too hard, people need this course to do what they want because it's required..
is actually helpful, but he expects a lot from students.
i am very disappointed in the quality of instruction that thor brings to the table. i would avoid him for that reason more than the fact hes a hard marker
Thors been teaching since 2011 but ALL his bad comments are from the last 3 months (and 5 of those are from a span of 2 days). Really? So, he suddenly became a bad teacher? More likely there is one angry student that posted multiple ratings. Grow up. And seriously, try to name a Engl prof that ISN'T hard. English is a hard subject, deal with it.
He's a nice guy who is very helpful. He's not the hardest marker but he does expect you to learn from previous assignments. I would recommend him if you're interested in taking or have to take ENGL.
Thor is a very helpful&good teacher, go to his office hours. He's very understanding, has a good sense of humour and his class is always interesting. I personally hate english, but he's a nice teacher so I recommend him you won't get bored cus his lectures are fun to attend. If you're complaining about his marking, eng isn't easy, haters gone hate.
Awesome teacher personality wise& very reasonable, has one paper for 25% which gives you a chance to pull up your grade. He's very understanding. Only class I actually enjoyed attending because his lectures were fun. Because of Thor I don't hate english anymore even though i suck at it. Please don't hate on the teacher for the grade you receive!!
One word describes him >>>> CHILL teacher :D I recommend him if you need English as a prerequisite or you just simply love english :) COOL prof
Nice guy
I love the fact that in this class you actually get to know everyone & talk to them & discuss the material, unlike my other classes I don't even know who's in it or who's a classmate. THOR is too cool to be an instructor. I enjoyed English with with him.
He should have the chilli pepper on this site because he's Hot! I highly recommend him.
one of my fav profs
He takes attendance. solid proff and nice guy. very clear and has office hours for help. he marks his papers fairly hard so make sure you actually try or else your mark will be terrible. if you are interested in improving your writing skills I would highly recommend thor
probably the coolest english teacher you'll ever meet! his lectures are very interesting and fun for a English Class since i hate English itself. Show him you are willing to put the work in and he will help show you ways to improve. Recommend if you have to take english!
:D brings a smile to every class. Amazing prof. really knows his stuff & takes English seriously and wants you to really improve your skills. Very helpful.
Awesome guy. Don't be afraid to ask for help or feedback. Make sure you make use of his office hours!
Recommended!
Thor is passionate about english. he marks hard because he cares and wants people to improve. he lectures about relevant an interesting topics, so class is always interesting. over all i think is is a fantastic prof.
This prof is a young guy, who at 1st seems really chill. DON'T be fooled by his down to earth demeanor, he's strict when it comes to late assignments, ATTENDANCE & grading. VERY hard marker, seeing as everyone got a C on the mid term. If you do want to truly improve your abilities in English, then Thor's class will be beneficial but also very HARD.
He's a great guy, but his marking style is basically tough love. He's funny and fairly modern in his teaching style. Although he's young, he knows his stuff and he isn't afraid to show authority esp. with late assignments. Definitely cool, but don't try to charm your way to an A. Prep for those papers.
Recommend for any english class! I also took 1127 with him
Thor is a great prof who is more than willing to help out of you go and visit him during office hours. He is very anti late assignments and skipping class, so if you're lazy and can't make it to class half the time and you're a super procrastinator he is not the prof for you. But he is funny and let's you know his expectations on the first day.
He was a fairly good teacher. He says straight up that he knows its a mandatory course for a lot of people, and knows many do not want to be there. Overall clear, funny at times, must read the stories before class, 2 in class essays, 1 revision of the in class, one research paper, a very small group project worth 5%, and then a final exam.
FML. English. FML. English makes me cry I Suck at it.. but nice prof!
He is a good prof, but he takes attendance very seriously. Overall he's very helpful as a prof. He helps you develop your skills further with his feedback which in return allows you to get a better grade. Definitely make use of his office hours he will clear any misunderstandings if there are any.
Fun classes. Makes you interested in the class and subject. Lots of interactions (teacher/students).
Thor is a really awesome teacher. You will look forward to going to class everyday. His topics are cool for people into race studies or social justice. Make use of office hours, he will help you! Participate in class! So far, he is one of my favourite profs at Langara. I am taking another class from him next semester!
Thor is an amazing teacher. He chooses interesting topics and makes class discussions fun. You will look forward to going to class. Make sure to go to his office hours, it helps a lot. Taking his 2nd year course next semester which analyzes the poetry in Hip Hop, how rad is that?!
He's a great professor who teaches material that I'm passionate about. I attend every class but his harshness with grading papers makes me fall into depression. You can have good attendance, never hand an assignment in late, and still fail.
I enjoyed being taught by Thor. He made english class more engaging and is passionate about what he teaches. I would say that he takes attendance seriously and participation matters. I'm quite a shy person but, participating in Thor's class felt natural. I would also recommend using his office hours as he is more than happy to help! :)
Thor was able to bring elements of contemporary culture to his class in a way that was fun and captivating. His teaching style is dynamic, full of humour and easy to keep up with. I highly recomend taking him for Eng 1127. Although he is a hard marker, he is very approachable and offers help during his office hours.
hors choice of literature is dry and the quality is poor. he's an interesting person which makes coming to class ok however his choice in literature is boring..... i would recommend caroline harvey instead.
Thor is a nice guy and his classes are interesting and fun to be a part of. Unfortunately his expectations are exceptionally high and frankly he makes you begin to dislike literature. He is a very tough grader and does not give helpful feedback as to how to improve your grades.
I found this class really frustrating. I was aware of Thor's rep for being a hard marker, but took the class because I wanted to improve my writing skills. Feedback was ambiguous, and even though I utilized his office hours and writing center, my mark never improved as he progressively marks harder throughout the term. Class was dry and awkward.
Don't take Thor unless you are a strong writer. He doesn't give out a clear criteria of what he wants you write and marks harshly. There is more work in this half online and half in class course than a regular online course. Each week there is one online activity or assignment due plus a chapter quiz. Take the course with someone else if you can!!!
Thor is a great professor! He never shuts down your idea which only motivates you to participate more. He's very engaging and funny so it makes the course a lot more fun. I highly recommend taking his course!
I like that he uses pop culture as the basis for assignments to make his subject less boring. Through in-class activities, he truly cares about this course and his students. The grades usually came in late, but he gives good feedbacks. If you've questions, he's available through e-mail or office hour. I'd recommend him for your next semester.
A wonderful introduction to college English, I told him myself. He's invested in the class and makes it extremely interesting despite the boring nature of some of the required reads with relevant examples. That's not to say Thor is easy, he's reasonably difficult but explains everything and prepares you well. Absolutely amazing prof!!
I enjoyed Thor's class but the attendance can screw you, if you miss 3 classes (of course there are special cases but you get the idea) you drop 10%. Other than that he's a great teacher really makes a somewhat boring class really exciting. Highly recommended.
TOUGH GRADER! Only if you are good at participation and English (!!!!), take his course. Otherwise, please don't. He is really smart though, lectures are very funny and interesting. You can learn a lot from him. Again, don't take his course unless you are SUPER good at English. Also, don't skip his classes. Never. Omg;(
Very respectable and kind guy. You can feel that he cares a lot and wants you to do well. A medium hard grader, a lot of papers and if you miss classes... good luck.
Seems like a really tough and strict prof at first, but is actually very nice and helpful. Could always come to his office to get help with assignments. He used familiar pop culture references as examples, so that his lectures were clear and fun. Participation matters a lot though!
Thor was super nice and very approachable! be sure to utilize his office hours because he gives really good feedback on assignments. He offers a 2% extra credit assignment which was really easy so Id obviously suggest to do it. I enjoyed his class, im sure you will too :)
Thor is a great instructor. Hard marker, but I feel like all English instructors are hard markers because they are passionate about their subject. His material was thought-provoking and he related it to current day issues, which I did not expect from an English class. Would recommend.
Not gonna lie - best prof I've had at Langara. Lectures are super fun, and he gives great feedback for how to improve your papers. Attendance is EXTREMELY important (if you miss 3 classes you're done for) and participation is a small percentage of your mark, but he's super chill. I got to write an essay on a music video and on a video game so lol.
Thor's classes are fun, well thought out and engaging! He's very much into pop culture and is quite the nerd. His english class is quite fun and interesting, I'd definitely take another class with him if given the chance
Very fun and engaging class! Take English with him if you can, highly recommend.
Very nice and understanding but tough grader, sometimes not clear on expectations and nit picks quite a bit at your work
Really loved his class, very intersting and engaging lectures. A bit of a tough grader, but most english profs are its their craft. If you havent taken English in a while, Thor will motivate you, take his class
Thor is a really engaging speaker. He is informative and clear and he leaves a lot of room for discussion, and the discussions are helpful for papers, tests, and in-class essays. He is a bit of a tough grader, though. Not impossibly tough, but be prepared to work hard if you want an A.
I was honestly so scared to take an English class because I hadn't in one year, but Thor made it so fun and engaging. He picks very interesting texts to read to get us into using the critical concepts we have to learn. He can be a hard marker, but is fair and gives good feedback to improve. His class is fun and interesting, take his class!
Interesting and engaging lectures, makes English fun to study. Incorporates pop culture in class to help students understand critical concepts, while making them fun to learn as well. Great teacher!
Thor is a really inspiration professor who was extremely patient with me. English is not really my strongest subject but Thor made me feel more confident in my writing. If you work hard, you'll get the grade that you deserve.
Second class with Thor and would take another class with him if I was given the chance. His lectures are fun and interesting, he picks interesting texts and movies which make his class all the more fun. He can be a hard marker, but all english profs are really. Take it with Thor, you'll have a great time!
You have to work very hard to survive in this class!
Thor is fun and so his lectures are to match. He picks texts and movies more modern and contemporary. If you have the chance to take 1130 with him, I'd strongly recommend him!
Thor is super fun, and I remember his lecture being a breeze because of how entertaining and well-thought out they were. Can be a bit of a toughie at marking, but nothing too unfair or unexpected. Particpate! It's 10% of your grade, but you talk about pretty modern things so it shouldn't be too bad
If you are taking 1100, take it with Thor. He makes the bland and dry content from the textbook easy to understand with contemporary skits, music videos and various youtube videos. He picks fun texts to read, so class is never a bore.
Thor's great. Engaging classes (a bit long winded sometimes), participation encouraged and fantastic choice for reading materials. Only qualm I would have is that we're studying film and we're expected to find and watch movies outside of class time... pretty frustrating given that one of them came out last year and isn't available at any library.
My first ENGL class in 6 years and Thor made it a fun and memorable experience. Don't expect his class to teach you how to write; it will teach you how to think. Interesting ideas, eloquently stated and backed by evidence will give you a strong grade. He is very supportive, so ask for feedback often and you'll get a hang of what's expected of you.
Thor is very good at explaining the main points. He is a reasonable marker and made the classes pretty fun to attend as he has a great sense of humor. I took CMNS 1118 for business, and was pretty satisfied with my overall grade. There was no final exams either, but he made the midterm very understandable. He expects full participation & engagement
Thor really wants you to succeed in his class. He has a great sense of humour and his lectures are interesting. If you do all the homework, engage in the class, and take some notes, you'll be just fine in doing well. He is a bit of a tough marker, but it's English, and there's always room for improvement.
He grades too hard not the best teacher for Communications. Also, he is pretty lazy he grades assignment in ages.
Hard grader
Thor is the best English teacher you can get. He's a tough marker, but he's reasonable and gives you really solid advice for your writing. You finish the semester knowing how to write a really effective essay (which helps in other courses!). He's hilarious, and makes his classes interesting.
Tough grader, very nit-picky on assignments that aren't always clear, with way too casual feedback. Makes his assignments based on pop-culture (star wars, rick and morty, etc) which is probably the stupidest thing ever. I cringe when reading my work after having to follow the prompts he writes up. Take his class if you're a HUGE nerd.
DO NOT take this class! Thor is a very hard grader and bases all of his papers on fictional stories. I spent the entire semester writing emails to Willy Wonka and ended up getting a C- on every assignment. Hands down the worst teacher ive ever experienced in my life.
Thor makes the assignments fun by making them themed. For each assignment there is a choice of around 10 movies/TV shows that is the scenario and you choose which one you want to do. This makes the assignments so much easier and more fun. On the flip side he is a really tough grader. Midterm was two short writing pieces and there's no final!
If he doesn't like your ideas (even if your essay itself is well written) he will not hesitate to give you a low letter grade. I found his inclass essay set up and marking scheme incredibly flawed and unfair. Thor is a nice guy and a good teacher but he can't expect students to write at a master degree level.
I took a course w/ Thor some years ago, and his assignments still resonate with me today. Sure he's not the easiest marker, but he gave me good feedback and made an effort to help if I made the effort to work. He brought in graphic novels and really interesting material, and while some ideas were over my head, I'd take a course with him again!
Thor gives good feedback and is willing to help but he is a tough grader. Also, be prepared to write at least 4 essays. Haven't written the final yet but it seems it is going to be very tough with 2 paragraphs and 1 essay with a 4-hour time limit :(
An amazing professor that has been able to successfully transition online (due to COVID). His course consists of two big papers, two exams, and weekly discussions. His lectures and slides are very interesting and his film choices are so versatile that you're bound to find a film you really enjoy. He grades fairly and is easy to contact.
Hard marker, convoluted feedback, I was on the deans list until I took this class, worked so hard and got such low marks, every other prof gives me 90%+ on my papers-no idea what he wanted!! Awful experience Honestly think he gets tired marking so many papers and gives random marks
Thor likes comic books, and he teaches with them, which is cool. He taught me that I didn't have to settle for less when I can wait and expect more for my time. I hope he keeps doing the entrepreneur dynamic in his class because it is the foundation of my business ethic today.
Good guy, tough marker but gives decent feedback. Readings are long and boring. Essays and assignments have clear and realistic criteria. Attendance is absolutely mandatory and for marks. Super nice, open to questions, will give you the help necessary to get a good grade in his class
From someone who hated English classes in high school, Thor's class was far more enjoyable. Overall he's a good guy that makes it apparent that he cares for his students. My main issue with the class is that he uses an external marker for take home assignments. This external marks very hard compared to Thor and they give conflicting comments.
I liked Thor as a person, but disliked his teaching and grading style. The class time during the first half of the semester was spent ineffectively, before we were slammed at the end. My essays varied greatly in quality, yet all received the same grade. Many classmates I talked to had the same complaint. It seemed he gave everyone the same grade.
Do not take his class!! He is an extremely hard grader. If you ask him what you did wrong on an assignment, he won't tell you how to correct it. My classmate helped me more in one sentence than he did the entire semester. He's a good and fun person overall, but his teaching style makes you wish you stayed home.
Pretty fun and chill class. He likes participation and explains the ideas that will be relatable to students. His teaching style is unconventional. Class discussion is casual and conversational which makes the student very relaxed in his class. However, he's not prompt in giving back feedback and grades.
Hilarious guy and makes lectures interesting with genuinely insightful and fun group activities. Unfortunately, he is an incredibly tough marker and takes far too long to grade work. He even used a student to mark our most recent assignment; their feedback was so bad that it made me laugh out loud. Learned lots about business communications though.
His grading criteria is very tough.
I felt Thor's expectations for me and my classmates in his online class were reasonable; just basically keeping up with the content, participating in the weekly discussions, and watching the lesson videos and slides which were honestly nothing too crazy, and as far my interactions with him he was always friendly, so I think he's a good prof.
Best professor I've had thus far at Langara. Make sure you open emails to him with "yo thor", he loves it when you do that
Super nice guy, really enjoyed his lectures and his assigned readings. The online course was really well organized and his instructions and expectations were always clear
very hard marker (coming from straight A student). can barely get an A. not a fast marker or a fast email responder. DO NOT RECOMMEND. meets during office hours, gives feedback but STILL POINTS THAT SAME THING OUT WHILE MARKING (like I corrected it as you said?? now smt else is wrong??) took him cuz he has a 3.smt but he's horrible
He takes a month to grade one assignment. provides 200 pages reading from two novels within two weeks. He won't tell you what will be test on the 20% assignment, two-hour time limit. He only informs you that it will be based on one of the two novels, so you can't prepare for it. You have two hours write a 5-paragraph essay. Need good thesis lol
Extremely hard grader! with an excessive amount of work. If you are taking his class, make sure your English level matches that of a master's degree, as he doesn't teach or provide examples of how to succeed in his class. He expects you to write at a level beyond that of a first-year college student.
I'm a 4.0 student and I'm getting C's and B's on assignments in this class. Its super disheartening and the grading is definitely tough. In 1129, marks were way more reasonable. He doesn't like creative insights and seems like he just wants simple, well constructed essays. This course has me messed, wish I never took it.
Thor uses external markers to grade our assignments, which means each assignment is marked with different styles, making it hard to understand his grading standards. While he is nice in person, his class is very challenging. Additionally, the workload is significant, so I do not recommend his class if your English level is not strong kills u GPA.
I personally loved Thors class and the material covered. Very manageable workload and engaging lectures, but he does base your grade pretty heavily on participation so maybe not for you if you dont like talking in class. 2 mini essays, midterm, 1 final essay, and a final. Would definitely take another course with him!
Good teacher he always believes there is some improvement so rarely someone will get an A in the class. make sure all writing is clear and concise and to the point. reach out for more help with rough drafts of upcoming assignments he is always willing to help. A lot of reading but the exams and assignments are very easy not hard to do well.
Thor's the best! Very approachable and understanding. Take his poetry class!
Thor teaches material very wisely and always engages with the class. It's very easy to pass if you read and participate in discussions. Make sure to keep your writing straight to the point as that's all he asks. Ask him questions and laugh at his jokes.. he's a great teacher!
Thor is a nice professor, but he is a hard marker.. I usually get B+ to A- in english courses, in this class i'm certain I got C-. You need to be a strong writer to be able to get a good grade in this class. Dropped my gpa like crazy. Nice person tho :)!
The tough course because of the challenging topics and the confusing exam format. Avoid it if any possible. Accumulating testable materials in English 1100 makes the final extremely difficult to prepare. He is a good guy though, with much attention to students' concerns and questions.
He marks hard but overall a really great prof! Make sure to participate in class and use office hours.
