Professor Hilmer is new to SDSU this yr so I decided to take her class. I made the right choice! She is very helpful in office hours and truly wants to see her students succeed. Do the HW and case study's(lots of busy work)to ensure a decent grade in her class. She's extremely nice, but don't get caught cheating or you will regret it!!!
This teacher needs to be fired. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES. She is rude and bias, definately have pets in her classes. She overworks her students and is unfair in grading. Even if you put a lot of effort in her class, if she doesn't like you, she will still try to find ways to pull your grade down. BEWARE, STAY AWAY FROM HER CLASS.
had a hard time, with all the course, load keeping up. on test days everyone goes past the allotted time and still doesn't finish which means the test is not fair. makes it seem like she doesnt want u to bother her and classes are not that helpful. grading is horrible and unfair since explanations are not sufficient. very stressful class.

shes an ok teacher..basically look at the powerpoint slides on blackboard for help..i did sense some rudness when i asked her a question..just do all the hws and case studys
There is a lot of work in this class, but if you do it (yourself), you WILL do well on the tests. She's new to SDSU so she actually has expectations of her students. . .gee who knew? She curves her tests, the TA is a point nazi, but she understands. She likes when you ask questions, but hates answering the same question repeatedly.
do the homework and really try and you will actually get a 90. Study homework answers before the tests. Easy C because of curve. Lots of homeowrk though!
The most work I have ever done for a class. Make sure you make lots of friends, you'll need their help. Do well on the HW & Case Studies!! Tests are hard. Class is curved, so don't worry too much. DO NOT COPY OTHERS HW & CASE STUDIES, SHE'LL TURN YOUR ASS IN!!! No need to go to class, you don't learn anything & no attendance required.
lots of work, but the work actually helps you understand and do well on tests. i never "sensed any rudeness", she seemed very nice and helpful. cheat sheets allowed on tests. 7-8 hw assignments and 2 case studies (which really aren't that hard).
I think that this class is hard who ever you take it with. Lots of work, 2-3 case studies, 3 exams, 7 long painful homework assignments=12-13 assignments over 4 months. Pretty much, plan on having no life once you take this course. She is nice, funny and caring but very demanding with what she wants. GOOD LUCK. You'll need it!
I admit that the homework assignments are time consuming. Attend class religiously and you will earn a promising grade in her class. The cheet sheets are very helpful as well as her office hours.
Hilmer is a nice lady though sometimes comes across kinda abrasively. Don't question her about grading cuz she hates that and doesn't care about getting in ur face during class. HW is long and takes 3+ hours to complete unless ur a genius. Cheat sheets help on tests but final is long n tedious. She is a cool lady to take for this boring class.
Not friendly or helpful. Does not seem to have a grasp of the material and sometimes I wonder if I should be teaching her economics. A lot of work but a very easy grade and she does not push the class to be creative or thoughtful ... just spit back the basic facts and you will be fine
She's better than her husband, that's all I have to say.
if you have any other option ... take it. this was a bad experience for me
SWEET CLASS! ECON RULES!! IF YOU LIKE REGRESSION ANALYSIS AS MUCH AS I DO, TAKE IT!! I LOVE LIFE!
VERY EASY CLASS! No book, easy hw, she gives you copies of the midterms/final beforehand (and they are exactly like that). She is very helpful in office hours, really cares about her students, wants you to do well but doesn't push you to like the subject. Attendance not required but highly recommended, she let's the class out early everyday anyway!
Hard ass class! 6 Homeworks, all take 2-4 hours to complete. My only suggestion....Go to every class! Use her office hours. She is helpful. LOTS of work, but if you go to class and keep up, you'll at least get a B. Not a gimme, but if you work at it, you can get an A. She is very fair. Oh, and don't cheat! She'll get you kicked out of school.
Very good teacher. There is a lot of homework and information to know for the tests, but if you do the homework and practice tests, the tests are easy. There is quite a bit of work for the class, but it's beneficial if you are a econ major
I understand why some don't like her but I thought she was a great teacher, maybe b/c I understood the material. LOTS of homework, 6-7 and 2 case studies. Two midterms and one final- notes. Maybe hard for some, as long as you understand the material you will do fine. Attendence not mandatory but HIGHLY recommended
This class is not too har, but not easy either. If you go to class and get off to a good start on the fisrt mid-term and case study, it should carry you thru the semester. Start homework early, as they are pretty long. She will also help you with the homework in office hours. In short, go to class, put in the time and you will get an A....like I di
Excellent
Tia is my favorite econ professor at state! She is all about econometrics and wants everyone else to share her view on it. She gives out copies of previous exams before each exam. Easy to get a good grade, as long as you go to class, do practice questions she gives out, and ask questions. Most challenging class ive taken, but SO worth it! shes grea
Awesome Teacher!
She's the best teacher I've had so far. You don't need to by the book if you go to every lecture, but I've opened it once or twice studying for midterm and final. Print out all the notes, do all the homework and print out all the practice problems and practice exams and you'll do great
Awesome teacher, very enthusiastic, and wants her students to do well. For me the class was extremely hard I just didn't pick up on the info. Not a bad teacher at all, Ive just realized that I'm not cut out for Econometrics. Homework is a breeze, and tests she gives you last semesters to study off of. 1 sheet of notes allowed to use on midterms
She's a great teacher. She tries so hard to teach a very difficult class, esp econometrics. She's very knowledgeable and knows he stuff very well. she's a great teacher, very energetic, caring. class is not boring at all. You need to do the work to do well in her class. don't expect an easy breeze or slack off to get a good grate.
She'll bend over backwards to mask sure your questions get answered. "Thank you for asking..." Comes accross as pretentious. Do all extra posted problems/many end up on test. Take all exams and cumulative final was optional. Print out study notes and be prepared for an ass load of demand curves!!!
She calls herself an economist yet, has never read the wealth of nations and no marx for that matter
"Happy to help" is her coined phrase. Class attendance not mandatory, but makes the criteria super easy since textbooks are not used. Do all the old tests she posts and tests will be a breeze
uses power point, semi funny, good teacher. keeps it real
She is extremely helpful and she wants you to ask her questions. The test are tricky but if you do all the practice problems you'll do fine. Easy class if you attend.
She is really willing to help you and will wait until you understand material before moving on, if you ask the questions. Very helpful if you go to office hours. The book is not required, but you should go to class to make sense of the material, otherwise you'll be lost unless you're already good in economics.
EASY!!! Class is entirely on a curve. Unlimited tries on homework so you can get 100%, plus 3 tests and optional final if you take every test. She is extremely nice and tries to help answer everyone's questions. If you want microeconomics in the easiest form, take with her.
Easy easy easy, there is a pretty big curve in his class, as long as you are smarter than most of the other 500 kids haha, not that hard... Don't buy the book, he even tells you not to. I ended up with an A and didn't even have to take the final, which is cumulative, so i would suggest just doing good on the first 3.
She loved questions. Very clear and to the point. She knows her stuff! def reccommend you take this class!
Best econ teacher at state. She is so awesome. She allowed me to really love this side of econ. I hated econ until I took her class. She really changed my life and now I love econ all b/c of her! She is so helpful and cute. You will want to try in her class. If you work hard she will love you and you are set.
Really nice professor highly recommend. If you show up and ask questions class should not be very hard. If you had mr hilmer and didnt like him dont worry she doesnt teach anything like him! Shes much better
Other posts about 441 econometerics are accurate, she is fun, helpful and not boring. Grade = 5-6 homework assignments 15%, 2 research projects 20%, presentation of project 5%, midterm 25%, final 35%. If you understand statistics and regression, then this class is easy. got an A
She is a little bit pretentious. don't like that.
This class is very difficult if you are looking for an easy A do not take the class...she however is a very good teacher she tries to make a very difficult class manageable if u take this class i would highly recommend going to every class and taking good notes... good luck!!
She's much much better than the guy, and much more helpful, the new homework system is much more time consuming and difficult but when it comes down to the wire it helps you on the test, read the book then do the homework assignment, do the practice test and understand the answers, you will get at least a B+
This class is pretty simple. Just go to class and pay attention. Do the weekly hw assignments. Before the tests, just go over the practice test and make sure you understand it and you will do fine. Don't waste your time going to A+. There is no grading scale, grades are relative to other students so there is a huge curve.
she is really rude. claims to help students and willing to answer questions, however during test i ask a question and she WON'T answer because she feels the question is too straight forward. another thing if you send an email about a simple question she sees it as complaining. i don't recommend her, but thats just my experience.
She is better than her husband, but take Amuedo-Dorantes because the class is easier. A+ did not do much to help. Study the practice problems/practice tests. Got a C+ but that was with countless hrs of studying. Definitely a difficult class. Make sure to get 100% on all hws because it really does help in the end!
Hard but doable. She offers LOTS of great resources on BB (unlike the similar 101 class by the other Hilmer) My advice: read the powerpnts she puts up w/ podcasts. You don't need to be in class. Take all 3 exams & miss the final instead. It's cumulative & therefore much harder. You don't want to be stuck with your grade depending on it.
It's hard but doable. She offers LOTS of great resources on BB, use them. My advice: read the powerpnts she puts up w/ podcasts. Being in class is not really a must. Take the 1st 3 exams & miss the final instead. It's cumulative & therefore much harder. You don't want to be stuck with your grade depending on it.
I had a really hard time in Prof Hilmer's class. We only met once a week for an hour and a half, and the class consisted of 400 students, which made it difficult to ask questions. Her office hours were at obscure times. She's very smart and seems like a great person, she has the wrong class room environment for my learning style.
Class is simple...4 tests including final. Homework's due every weekend. Not the best teacher as far as her lectures go...often confused or has to fix errors. Overall class is easy to teach yourself thus there is no real concern on her poor teaching.
I never went to class but the curve was huge so I got a solid B with a 75%. She's helpful but the tests are difficult. Homework is easy and due every sunday, try and you can get a good grade.
hybrid section was pretty easy to me. got away with not paying for aplia by finishing all the hw within the 2week grace period :D optional final if you take all 3 tests and do hw. going to class is pretty useless unless you need explanations on how to do hw problems. didnt need book at all. u get to keep tests to study for final. & SHE CURVES A LOT
You can tell she really, really cares about her students and doesn't just teach econ because that's what she ended up doing. She has TONS of resources online as far as lectures go. podcasts, lectures with powerpoints, even STUDENT NOTES. She also posts past exams and extra practice problems for every chapter. (Do this to prepare for exams!)
I got a B+ in my hybird section. Getting to stay home and listen to the lectures was a nice change then having to go to class and go through that whole hassle. I thought I aced each midterm but some how only got B's on em...Luckily the rest of the 500 student class didn't do that well so I didn't even have to take the final. She is kinda sexy 2 ; )
Dr. Hilmer teaches A LOT BETTER than her husband. She really cares about her students and makes every effort to hold multiple office hours per week and provide various tools on blackboard we can access to help prepare for exams. She can be funny and there was a huge curve at the end so I aced the class.
She is so good. She loves what she does and it shows. She gives examples that make it easy to understand. She uses the program Aplia for homework and for me it was really effective.
TEST ARE HARD!!!
Clear class, Hilmer, explains well the material and provides several study resources for the exams (prac test, prac problems)3 tests+final, which is optional.Weekly online hw that requires you to pay attention. Got a C cause i always studied last min /didn't put effort or time to this class all my energies were focused in calc and acct. As&Bs=doable
Hilmer's class is a hybrid class, meaning that there is only lecture on Tuesdays, and the rest is online. Aplia HW does not always reflect what she teaches in class (it is more difficult). Her tests are based on lectures and powerpoints, but I wouldn't say they are easy. You HAVE to study for this class, it's not an easy A.
Tia is very helpful. If you attend every class you will find it beneficial because she gives you example test questions. Also don't go to A+ review for this, Tia puts example questions for every test and every chapter up for you, which are very very similar to what's on the real test. Study those and attend class, you'll get an A.
Ehh.. Econ is not for everyone. It was pretty tough but it is manageable. Extra effort is necessary outside of class if you want a decent grade.
I took her summer class at UCSD. Better than all the UCSD profs. She is so sweet and makes stats very interesting and understandable.
So first off I am a double major and econ is one of them. I enjoy the subject and had no problem in other econ classes. she isnt that good of a teacher, her tests she tries to trick you and is rude if you ask questions, she constantly fixing mistakes and her graphs are HORRIBLE they leave you confused. id skip out. I believe im getting a B now
She explains well. HW is APLIA and averaged. 3 midterms, 1 final (optional). Went to class every week. Actually did all of the practice problems/material. Got Bs on all the exams and ended up with a solid A. Just go to clas, do practice problems, and read basically.
3 midterms and the final is optional. If you actually do the practice problems and the aplia hw, the exams are fairly straightforward. Econ is a pretty boring subject but she simplifies everything in her lecture. That being said, always look back on the lecture notes and it does help to look at the powerpoints! Managed a B with little work.
Econ isnt easy but she made it much more clear. Attendence isnt mandatory because EVERYTHING is online. be sure to get as close to an A on the homework because it can make a full grade difference. 3 midterms and a final but the final is optional.
I took the Hybrid class and highly recommend it. It was worth going to A+ Review to get a better understanding before the tests.
She is really good at explaining material during class. Usually she starts class with warm up problems, which is guaranteed to be similar to a midterm problem; Thats a plus! Three midterms and one optional final. FINAL IS HARD! So try to do good on the midterms. Overall, I recommend the professor!
HARD CLASS!!! Everything is online through Aplia except for 3 exams and the final. All the online work is WAy different than what she puts on the tests. SO confusing. Nice lady but still.
I took the class in IRPS UCSD. People did not like her that much because she did not use slides, but she was forced not to use them. She's an amazing lecturer; though she might not reply emails pretty often.
Tia Hilmer is one of the worst professors I have ever had. She is unhelpful and her class is hard because she doesn't do a good job explaining economics. I think she needs to give points for attendance, since I took notes and went to every lecture. The exams really impact your grade, so try to do well. Good luck with her!!
Great professor. Her exams are hard but make sure to study the textbook and the practice problems she has on blackboard.
Most unhelpful teacher I have ever had...acts like she has a 10ft stick up her butt. She wouldn't even tell me when the final was when she neglected to put it in her syllabus. Does a good job of explaining the homework, but don't expect the tests to be like the practice exams. Should have gotten an A but didn't because she refuses to help.
This professor does not know how to teach beginning economics. She is very unorganized and always corrects herself in lecture (if we do not correct her already) and makes material more confusing than it has to be. Her tests are NOTHING like practice problems. If you want to succeed, do not take her hybrid course!
this class is one of the more challenging classes i have taken so far. you think you understand and then you get to the test and it has stuff that you never learned. you will need to study and really understand all the concepts so start studying early. it sucks because she is basically the only professor. all i can say is i am happy that i passed
AVOID! The practice tests from "last year",the practice problems at the end of each chapter, and the homework are NOTHING like the tests. The tests are pretty much your grade and are extremely difficult. Even if you read the book, you still might not pass the tests. Overall, A really hard class that you will have to work really hard in. AVOID!!
This class was much MUCH harder than expected. Hilmers exams are terribly hard and her practice exams barely help. She twists her questions to make them harder than they should be. I had to go to A+ review just to get a mediocre grade. Do not recommend taking her class, take someone else's!
I don't have anything against her as a person because for the most part it seems like she wants to help, but the tests are nothing like the homework, or the lectures, or the practice tests. She does do a curve for your overall grade, though. I was expecting it get a C+ And ended up with a flat B. Avoid Econ 102 if you have the choice.
I felt like I was never even in this class. She told us that everything we needed was online so if we didn't need help then class wasn't mandatory. I went on the first day and didn't go back except for tests. Final exam is optional. Online homework was weekly but easy. The tests were somewhat tricky but nothing extremely difficult.
HARD!! She is super unapproachable and impossible to ask a question to. She is condescending and rude. The tests are nothing like the homework, in class examples or practice tests or practice problems. Grades on a curve. You don't have to take the final if you take the 3 in class exams.
HW are totally different than the EXAMS. just study the lectures on blackboard.
Hard class. Big Curve. Go to class! she gives practice problems that are SIMILAR to her exams. HW is hardly comparable to her exams. Glad I'm done.
She designed the course to motivate students to actually understand the material, not just be able to do it on the homework. If you took the time to study and be able to explain each topic it's an easy A but if you just skim the readings enough to get the homework done you will fail. You're paying to learn, so you may as well actually do it.
The people who complain about her not being helpful clearly never went to office hours. She's extremely helpful and the practice tests make up at least half of the actual tests. I really enjoyed her class!
Take ECON 102 online during summer. You have to pay for Aplia and do all HWs and exams on it. She doesn't like to response your emails. The class is very easy and is very similar to Econ 101. Got an A. Only top 10 percent student got A. Overall, its relaxing and not time-consuming.
It's a hybrid class which made it a lot easier to understand the material. If you're confused, she's really helpful during office hours and during the class she answers questions. I'm just terrible at Econ unfortunately. It really helps to review the practice hw and old exams that she provides on blackboard bcuz she reuses questions.
I took the blended class and really did not like it. what she taught in class was different from what the homework was and neither were what the tests were like.
Thought this class was easy until the exams hit. 4 Exams (20%) & HW worth 20%. If you take all three exams, you do not have to take the final, so everything is worth 25%. She straight up said "HW is NOTHING like the tests." So just watch out for that, study her examples & you'll do fine. If you study every week, you'll do good in the class.
Worst teacher I have ever had the time to deal with, strongly discourage you to take a class with her. She is too confusing, and just reads off the slides and does nothing else. Her online homework will be the death of you, such a bad teacher.
Hands down the hottest econ professor at SDSU. However, the worst lecturer which is a real bummer. I promise you that you will keep thinking okay lady SYCH during the entire lecture! Made us use her very own pdf textbook, that was not proofed and contained a significant amount of errors. It is a good thing she is not a statistics instructor lol.
Homeworks are worth more then you think and take a lot of time. You have to read a lot before the hw or you won't pass them. She gives an awesome curve at the end of the year
Worst teacher I've ever had at state. Aplia hw is impossible, penalizes if you try again on the hw problems(3 tries but if you do not get it completely right the 1st try its impossible to get a 100 on the hw)Her tests are nothing like her lectures or Aplia, class average on tests were terrible. I'm an A, B student only grade below a B- in college.
She's not very helpful and expects you to know everything. A lot of the material is left unexplained and it's almost impossible to pass any of her tests.
GO TO CLASS AND STUDY YOUR NOTES! I averaged 2 hours a week doing homework for this class, and it's a little time consuming but it's not hard at all if you take the time to do the work. Easy A if you put in a bit of effort.
Take good notes in class, forget about studying book definitions, take her practice tests and you should do fine. Aplia is terrible 3 tries per homework and you only receive an average score on your 3 attempts, so if you don't get 100% the first time an A is almost out of the question for homework.
Class is near impossible but you also don't have many options. Do the homework, study the book, get a tutor and study past tests because her tests a so hard. Most students retake the class.
Very difficult tests. Instructor is unapproachable and explains the material poorly. Many students have to retake the class due to poor instruction. You would be better off taking the class with another instructor.
I had her fall of 2014, if you read the book and study study study her lecture notes you will pass the class. Her practice tests are full of mistakes so you need to double check with her, she barely responds to email and when she does its too late, however her tests are designed to trick you but if you study her lecture notes you will pass easy.
I studied for 1 week for the final and aced every practice test, practice exam, and extra problems she provided and 50% of the final did not resemble anything I studied. The lowest grade I've received at SDSU was a B and I'm hoping for at least a C but I doubt I'll get it. Unapproachable, passionless, and will go out of her way to trick you.
I feel that she makes the class harder than it needed to be. Very confusing during lectures as well. Unapproachable, so I suggest going to her TAs office hours. Online HW is ridiculously hard only 3 tries with each problem. She has a weird curve for the class. DO ALL the practice problems/tests before each test! Good luck!
I went to her office before the third exam so I would know about where I stood in the class and she told me that I was basically doomed for the class. She talks down to students, and was not approachable at all. Her TA's weren't all that helpful as sometimes they didn't even know how to do the problems on the practice exams.
Hands down the worst professor I have had so far. Went into her office hours once then never again because she was so rude to me. I can not believe a professor would talk down to me the way she did making me feel like a complete idiot. Her class is a waste of time, her online lectures are what actually teach you. DO NOT TAKE
If you can avoid this class. The test are tough, and the HW has almost nothing to do with the exams. There are 3 midterms and an optional final. I went to her office hours once and she was very rude, so I would suggest going to TAs. The class is graded on curve which can make or break your grade.
You don't have to attend classes since it's a hybrid class, only show up for midterms. Easy homework assignments. you need only two hours studying weekly for this class. All materials and lectures are available on blackboard. she also posts previous exams for revision.
This is a tough class but her curve at the end is very generous (raised my 90% to a 95%). I never once opened the textbook, however I did listen to all the online lectures, as well as the chapter practice problems and podcasts. Definitely go over the practice exams she has online. I didn't really go to class & homework can be hard. Would recommend.
When you talk to her, she is very rude.
I enjoyed the online program she used. She clarifies in class the homework and goes over material that will be on the test. Would recommend if you can keep up with online stuff and make it to class.
Don't take this class. Ruined my GPA. Her tests are super tough and are not definition, but concept based. The homework is constant and is a lot of work. The lectures are interesting and she is really nice, but her grading system sucks.
Professor Hilmer's Econ 102 class is about as easy as it gets. Up to you to choose between going to class and watching lectures. She shows examples of past exam questions in class. DO ALL practice questions from Blackboard as a lot show up on exams. Exams not very hard at all. Get 100% on hw to offset some bad exam scores. Easy A in my opinion
The online homework you have to do is insanely confusing, hard, and takes a lot of time to understand. Luckily, the tests are SO much easier than the homework, but still difficult. Attendance isn't mandatory at all but if you don't go then the homework is A LOT harder. If you take the optional final she puts it in your grade, even if it was bad.
I'm not sure about her grading system, I added up my points and I should have gotten a C for the course, but I unfortunately ended up with another grade. The homework and tests are quite difficult. She does offer practice problems, but she only gives answers for the questions, no explanations for how to get the answers. I'd avoid her altogether.
In class she shows examples of problems and goes through them step by step. There are some similar problems on the exams. You do need to read and do the homework in order to get good grades on the exams. She has a weird curve, but it was definitely helpful. Do the practice exams and know the materials/problems really well and you'll pass the exams
Super hard class. Go to the lectures and make sure you pay attention and take good notes. Tests are really hard. I had to teach myself the material and went to A+ reviews before the exams. She also does not respond to emails. If possible, take another professor.
Tia is not helpful. Took it with a friend and she failed the first midterm she basically told her to give up. Lectures are just vocab slides but tests are on concepts in the book.
Your grade is basically based off of your exam scores (3 exams + 1 final which is optional if you take all 3 exams) and a weird curve. There's weekly homework but it doesn't have much to do with the exam material so it isn't much help. She isn't the most approachable person either. I'd highly recommend taking this course with a different professor.
Tests are difficult, but almost all based on the practice tests/problems. I attended every lecture and understood the material, but because her class is so test heavy ended up with a B. Overall, in my opinion she isn't bad but she isn't the best either.
Tests are hard and you basically have to teach yourself but do go to classes and review her old tests that she puts on blackboard.
She absolutely knows what shes talking about. When I went to class, the HW for that week was a piece of cake and when I didn't, the material wasn't too hard to learn on my own. That being said, the exams are pretty tricky no matter how much you study. Most people complain because they never go to class so they don't know the stuff.
Would highly recommend over any other teacher. Homework was very minimal and was worth 25% of your grade. Tests are a little tricky but still can easily get a high B or A with a good amount of studying. Loves Econ and is more than willing to help, she made all the content we went over very easy to understand.
Prof Hilmer's lectures are clear and pretty simple, so going to class is definitely worthwhile. She also goes step by step through exam questions every class. Go to class, do the online homework, and do the practice exams on blackboard and you can easily get an A.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but I highly recommend going because she goes over test questions in class and makes the information easily understandable. I would take her for all econ classes if I could because she knows a lot and is passionate about the material. The class isn't super interesting or entertaining, but it's great for an econ class.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but the notes help for the exams. The class consists of homework on Aplia and 3 exams. The exams are extremely difficult for a basic GE class. You have to really understand the application of econ to do good on her tests.
Alright. So here's the what you need to know about econ102. Your grade only consists of the 3 midterms (4 if you decide to take the final) and your average homework grade. Make sure you study for each exam so you can avoid the final at the end. As for the homework, ALWAYS make sure you read the text and practice the material before you take it.
She takes all her effort to explain to the students the basic notions of econometrics. And she does it in a very simple manner, step by step that I could easily understand even the toughest hypothesis testing. Also pays a lot of attention to interpretation of data and how to avoid incorrect/ not scientific interpretation.
You are only graded on your HW grade and 3 exams. (Optional final). Exams are HARD. Practice exams are not similar to her real exams. Attendance is optional, but if you skip class you wont pass. Went to her office hours often and she gets frustrated when you dont understand the material right away. Not a good teacher and is mean. BEWARE!!!
Her tests are extremely difficult and even if you do great on the homework and practice tests, this does not mean you'll do well on the exams. She does not work with the students, and doesn't care about your end grade.
3 midterms, each 25% and homework is 25%. The final is optional if you take all the midterms. Class isn't mandatory but her lectures are very helpful and will help you so much on the test. I did hybrid so once a week going to class wasn't a big deal. Tests aren't too hard but you definitely need to study
3 tests and online HW make up your grade (weighed 25%) each. Let me tell you right now, this class is a joke. The HW, Practice Tests, and the Test you actually take have so many differences, it's almost comical. Also she loves to put trick questions on exams, and make them as hard as possible. Overall, I barely got a C before the curve. BEWARE
Hilmer's easy if you do her class right (aka don't go). I never went to a single lecture but went to A plus for all the exams and finished the class with a 98%. For reference, I finished econ 101 with a C+. Hilmer's class is only 3 tests (25% each) and homework (25%). go to a plus and you'll do well, they teach literally exactly to the test.
I never showed up to class but I got an A on every test (mainly because of A plus). if you take each of the 3 midterms, the final is optional (tests 75% and hw 25%). DONT SKIP A MIDTERM bc the final is worth 40% of ur grade if you do (its cumulative and 100 questions). if you don't plan on going to A plus I suggest going to class. there is a curve.
Econ is a difficult class no matter who your professor is but Prof Hilmer taught in a way that was easy for me to understand. Attendance is not mandatory but GO TO CLASS. DO NOT MISS A MIDTERM! The final is worth 40% of your grade if you do. Prof Hilmer is really sweet and always willing to help if you need it. I recommend taking her!
Records and posts lectures so you dont need to go to class. Tests can be tricky but she gives you a lot of practice problems and reuses problems. Final is optional
The tests are made to trick you. Even if you do well on the practice tests and practice problems the test is not easy at all. study hard
GO TO LECTURE. she makes is optional but she works the hard test questions in class that will be on exams. Do all the practice she gives you on blackboard and you will do well on the exams. The questions aren't exact but very simpler in concept level and way of wording questions. Don't read textbook if you go to lecture its pointless.
Material is clear and the professor liberally uses past tests and assignments as examples (one of the first HWs was last semester's midterm). She also informs you what will be on the test and is happy to answer questions. Projects are manageable. Allows a note card for exams. Master the HW (for tests)+devote time to the projects and you'll do fine.
Most useful econ class I've taken at SDSU. It's difficult, but I finally feel like I have learned something I need for future jobs. Do the hmwk & projects ahead of time, as the TAs are really helpful. I made my cheatsheets for midterm & final from thorough notes I took in class, and did well. It's v possible to do well, but be ready to work for it.
Her grading is point based and literally makes no sense. There are no quizzes which is good. But the tests are extremely difficult and is not based on the homework or what she teaches in class, it's more of the book. She is also bad at responding to emails and will get mad if you don't understand the material.
Grading scale is not the best, does not make any sense. But the final is optional. She curves the final grade, but only before the final. The only grades are the 3 midterms, homework and the final, so it is difficult to raise your grade if you do bad on one test. She is an okay teacher, but would not take her again.
Dr. Hilmer really wants her students to succeed, she is a solid lecturer and provides a ton of extra material on Blackboard, including practice problems for each chapter and multiple practice tests for each exam. Don't listen to the bad reviews, they clearly didn't put in the effort because she gives you more than enough resources to do well.
Dr. Hilmer is awesome! Econometrics is a difficult subject, but she does a good job at making the material manageable. Go to class, pay attention, and take good notes. Study the past exams and the homework to do well on exams. This is not an easy class, so expect to put in a good amount of work.
Not only are you expected to know the material but expected to solve Q's quickly. Tests are a timed 60 min with 50 Q's that take 2-5 min each. A joke. Don't expect to learn from her or for emails to be responded to. She's hardly involved in the class. Lectures are pre-recorded but fast and unclear. The practice problems given are hardly like exams.
Took this as a summer course and the time limit on tests was absolutely ridiculous, way too little time for complicated and multi-step problems, not a fair chance to do well. She also NEVER answers her emails to anyone and does not care about anything you have to say or ask. You can do well but you have to teach yourself and expect nothing from her
Because it was online, I couldn't get the most out of it because I'm assuming we would've practiced a lot more in class with Excel. Nonetheless, she provided thorough lectures on course material. Some things in lectures don't need to be known. I caught little mistakes in her notes and hw. That bothered me. She was great at getting back to emails.
Econ 441 is hard, especially online and Prof. Hilmer knows that. She passed me with a B graded on 4 assignments: 2 papers, a midterm, and a final. Do well and be neat on your papers. It's tough and I had to teach myself with her lecture videos, but if you're an econ major, these are important topics. No mandatory HW (Do them as practice for tests).
I can't believe SDSU allows their teachers to have fully online classes without lectures. I wish I had her job because she does nothing and still won't answer emails. Laziest teacher ever. Print out the previous tests before exams to do good.
I had to take this class for my minor and I am glad I chose Dr. Hilmer. Honestly she is a great person and the class isnt hard if you actually try. Homework is important but the test are easy. IF YOU STUDY THE PRACTICE TEST YOU WILL PASS THE TEST. The test are almost a replica of the actual test and if you go to her office hours before your good.
Didn't let us see our grades throughout the course up until a couple of days before the optional final. However, the homework was breeze for the most part if you had Chegg. For the exams, print out the past exams before that she provides in the modules and find the work on how to do those problems online and you should do not bad on the exams.
Dr. Hilmer was AMAZING! Definitely take her for ECON102 if you have the chance! She includes a ton of real life examples in her lectures which really help to understand the material. Her canvas is filled with resources including practice midterms which are essentially identical to the real midterms. Final is also optional. HW is short and easy.
Dr. Hilmer is very caring professor. She is one of the better econ professors at school so I recommend her. I took econ 102 before and failed and took her and passed. She has mindtap assignments every week and one lecture. She is always willing to help if you just talk to her.
Dr. Hilmer was a great lecturer, and made her grading policies very clear if you read the syllabus and listened to her. She went over test questions before the test and provided with previous exams that were almost identical to the exams. An important aspect of the class is to go to the lectures, otherwise you may not pass.
Honestly Hilmer was fine. I got B's on midterm 1 & 2 until bombing the last midterm dropping my grade to a C but chose to opt out of the optional final. I highly recommend A+ review or studying for the midterms as the homework isn't bad when you use chegg. Def would take her over another teacher.
Exams are so hard. I studied for 5+ hours and even went to A+ review and still failed two exams, so I had to drop the class which sucks. The exams carry majority of your grade and there are a lot of trick questions.
People over hate on this professor. Class was relatively easy as long as you do the homework. You get 3 attempts per problem and the highest score was taken from each problem so it is very easy to get 95%+ on the homework. Exams were fine as long as you understood the homework.
Unless you hate yourself DO NOT take this class... I got a 70 on the first test and then began to go to lectures every single week, do the the homework, and do the recommended practice tests to study for the tests and I received a 67. The class average on the tests is around 60 and the tests are not curved. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
If you love Econ and want a good grade in this class, take any teacher besides Hilmer. 1) grades dont come out until the end of the year, tests are very heavy, in person with little to no guidence. The homework questions give 3 attempts for each and if you get it wrong you cant do it again. Overall this class was horrible and I don't recommend.
For a 100 major prep class, this class is terrible. Maybe i'm just extremely not smart, but especially w exam 3 it made me want to drive off the roof of P7. I studied the entirety of Thanksgiving break and went through the practice exams, and out of all 33 questions, not one was based off a similar concept. save yourself and do not take this class.
The only reason she can be a little scary is because she does not want to teach people who do not want to learn. Do the homework, go to the lectures, and take the practice exams to prepare for the tests and you will be FINE. I did not do any chapter reading or go to her office hours or tutoring or anything. I still ended with an A.
Tia Hilmer is a great professor so I don't know how she received so many bad reviews. She has 3 midterm exams and an optional final, as long as you go to take notes on the videos she posts, do the homework, and look at the practice exams you will be completely fine.Only con is that you don't receive your grade until after your 3rd midterm. TAKE HER
Unlimited tries on the quizzes which are 100 points each. Two data exercises with vague instructions. One midterm worth 100 points but difficult. The final was ridiculously hard worth 20 points but 40% of your grade. Some of her answers to her own questions are wrong. Tough grader but does round her final grade. Get study buddies.
Study the old tests she posts. They are the same wording just different numbers on every test. Easy A as long as you do what she says and do good on the homework.
there is a lot of work and as an online class, it is a little harder, most of her homework was on Google. the tests were hard but she had a curve. I had a 50.6% in her class and passed with a C because of the curve. she doesn't offer makeup exams but you can take all 3 midterms and no final or 2 midterms and the final.
Tia's class is challenging but manageable if you stay on top of the work. Attending lectures, doing the homework, and using Unstuckstudy for practice exams is key to success. Overall, a decent ECON course.
She's not an understanding teacher at all. Was not understanding when I had technical difficulties with a test and was not willing to help me out and finish the test when I was forcefully locked out due to a glitch on canvas.
She is a decent prof. Provides you with all that you need and lets you figure it out yourself. The tests are online and pretty chill without studying for them you can easily get a C+/B- in this class. I would recommend studying and taking the class serious because if you do you can easily get an A. The homework is pretty difficult though.
Hardest class of my life but she curved my F to a C. Thank you girl if you ever read this ❤️
