Loves what she does and it shows. Gives feedback that helps.
totally in love with the subject!! fun class, awesome prof
The class is well organized!! Doesn't have much work to do. Only has to write 2 in class essay and 1 reasearch paper. Much better than Janet Giltrow!!
Too hard a teacher for a course like English. And please, get rid of the acadamic stream thing...
Amusing. Relevent and humourous analogies. Not easy marker, but fair with constructive criticism.
Dr. Potter is by far my favourite teacher at this university.
Definitely my favorite prof at UBC. I learned alot about writing academic papers and used much of this throughout my university experience. Her encouragement and comments on paper was definetly motivational. Just a pleasant person in general.
Good Prof, made class interesting, hard grader but helps you improve your writing, gives more time when needed, very fair, likes BUFFY.
really cool prof. she makes lectures funny and interesting, which is good because the material is sometimes less than riveting. medium-hard marker; wants original ideas instead of repeting what was said in class. kind of reminds me of laura linney. and she gets bonus points for being a Buffy fan!
I took this class by distance ed. Dr. Potter was helpful and quick at responding to e-mails. Really fair marking too.
such a great prof. really upbeat and overall pleasant person. approachable, encouraging, happy...makes lectures fun and entertaining with random-but interesting-facts here and there. tough marker but she cares about her students. i really enjoyed this class.
She teaches well, but has HIGH expectation of her students. Definitely a hard marker! Expect to get around 5% to 10% lower than other English profs.
Her commens on the essays are helpful, but she does not respond to email timely (at least for me). A very hard marker for a first-year course! I agree with the person below.
Really nice prof, obviously passionate about material. She marks hard though, and there is TONS of reading to do - unless you really love the material (I didn't) and have lots of time to put into this course (I didn't), you might not do as well as you would usually (10% worse for me, ouch!).
She's one of the better professors at UBC, you don't find profs like her very often. She's passionate about English and it's obvious because she makes EVERYTHING interesting. I may fall asleep in all my classes, but you will not find me asleep in this one.
Dr. Potter is fabulous! She lectures in a really engaging way, and often goes off on random tangents, which I loved. She was availiable for essay help, and marks very fair. She also writes extensive comments which is really helpful. I love English, and she made me love it even more!
Very tough marker! :( I really liked her class nonetheless and would recommend her. ;) If you're an A student like me, expect a final grade of B. :(
That's accurate, she is a really hard marker. I went down a letter grade too. Didn't really feel that it was justified, but regardless thought she was a good lecturer and I learned a lot. Probably would avoid her in the future however, due to her marking.
Tiffany Potter is an amazing prof. I didn't find her a hard marker but some did. She loves what she teaches and it shows. She reminded me why I like English. She has a modern approach that is very refreshing. Take her classes!!!
She's so encouraging and fun, but hard marker. Lovely person tho, take her class if you have the chance to.
She makes a very dry course fun, which i thought was impossible. I would reccomend this course especially for first year students because she teaches you how to write at a university level with steps, not just leaps and bounds. She made me love english again, definately a fun and useful course.
Dr Potter is engaging, even making the boring stuff entertaining, and marked my papers fairly. I agree that her love for the material clearly shows through. She also infuses her lectures with myriad pop culture references -- hear me now, Buffy or Lost fans -- which tends to wake up even the athletes taking the course for a degree requirement ;)
Very nice. Crazily organized.
A VERY good lecturer of academic writing. Makes thing simple, clear, easy to understand, and perhaps most importantly, interesting. Marks are given out somewhat sparingly, but what you get out of her class in terms of knowledge and understanding is great.
Marks pretty harshly (compared to other Engl class TAs), but her class was very enjoyable. Very nice prof with a great sense of humor. Loves to discuss pop culture (and how they relate to class material). A good prof to have if you're keen to learn. I got a pretty bad mark, but I don't regret taking her class, learned a lot from her lectures.
She is a great prof. She is amusing and really knows her stuff. She talks a bit fast so be prepared for her class. She is a wonderful help if you go to her office hours but she does mark hard so go to her first so your grade won't suffer!
One of the most engaging and amusing professors I've ever had. That said, she covers a lot of material and talks very fast so it can be quite difficult to keep up. She's a harder than average marker, but talking to her about your paper before hand definitely helps.
She is an awesome professor. Very fair marker and encourages creative and independent thought. Her lectures were awesome. She knows a lot and shares it all with her students. Great class overall.
Her reputation as an "A-killer" scared me so much that I worked ridiculously hard on her essays, only to achieve A's. But be forewarned: she really is that difficult of a marker. Our class average was 64%, and this class was full mostly with pre-English majors. That said, very good lectures and very motivating -even with fear.
A great lecturer. She's extremely passionate and knowledgable about her subject, and makes the class go by quickly. A challenging marker for essays, but it's definitely worth the effort.
She keeps the classes really interesting and she is a very nice person. She is approachable and you can find her outside of class time to ask for help. She does mark a little hard but I feel that I learned a lot from her class and it was all worth it :).
Passionate and enthusiastic about the course and its content. She was very approachable and flexible. I was entertained everyday during her lectures. Yes, I have to agree with the other comments, she does mark hard on the essays. She is not unreasonable, she just expects a lot. Definitely not able to just whip something up the night before!
Tiffany is a truly outstanding prof, one of the best I've had at UBC. She definitely earns the aformentioned reputation as a tough marker -- but hey, aren't we here for self-improvement? I found her comments on my writing to be extremely helpful.
GREAT PROF! I didn't find her marking tough, but then again I am the type to edit A LOT! However, I know others who found her marking tough. She really knows her stuff and made me so much more interested in Eighteenth Century Lit.
Very good prof. She was helpful and generally pretty nice. Definately worth taking her class, one of the best English teachers I've ever had.
Best English prof I have had yet. Really tough marker, but I've learned more in her class than any other because of that. She keeps the class interesting, and intellectually stimulating. I looked forward to her lectures. Take this class if you really want to learn, and improve your writing. Don't, if you're just looking for an average booster.
extremely interesting and funny prof who clearly knows her stuff (18th cent lit). her lectures are NEVER boring and she's a fair marker. the readings are quite heavy though and she quizzes you on them. but its a great class and not hard to get a decent mark- loved her!
She is very engaging and a humorous prof. She is nice and genuinely concerned for you. Definitely loves her field of study and that energy transfers to the classroom. A fair marker and you will learn a lot from this class! Be prepared for lots of heavy reading though (i.e. Clarrisa and Tom Jones)! I'd take another class with her
Dr. Potter is brilliant. She's made an already interesting subject even more interesting through engaging discussions and eye-opening discussions. I feel that her class has made me discover new critical skills. Contrary to popular belief, she's a very fair (not easy) marker. Put in the effort and you'll both learn tremendously and do very well!
What a great professor. Interesting, brilliant, a delight to listen to. Fair marker. I highly suggest speaking with her you write your paper. I can't stress how awesome this woman is. I didn't give a crap about 18th century lit before this course, and she made it fascinating. You WILL learn lots.
I'm not sure where the person 3 posts below me is coming from, as in ENGL 110 the TAs mark absolutely everything. Regardless, she's nice, intelligent, and a good prof. She HAS to stop pronouncing 'genre' and 'renaissance' in a French accent, though. That's just plain pretentious. I guess if that's my only complaint, though, she must be pretty good.
awesome prof. seriously, take a class from her and you'll learn a LOT! she's fun, enthusiastic and passionate. She always has a smile on her face which makes you feel comfortable, even to talk in front of 100 people. very kind and a good person in general.
One of the best teachers I've had so far at UBC. Engaging, outgoing, and expects a lot from her students.
Great teacher - she's so enthusiastic and her lectures are crystal clear. However, she is not the prof to take if looking for a high grade - her TAs mark ridiculously hard, and I was the only one in a class of 100 to get an A (barely). Good to take if you want to learn, though.
An enthusiastic educator, and very approachable. However, she puts a lot of effort in to her lectures, and expects the same from her students. She assigns a LOT of reading, and marks essays quite hard. English Lit is my minor and this is the only class I have ever received anything lower than an A in. Enroll if you like a challenge . .
Awesome and engaging lecturer. UBC needs more profs like her. Super hard marker though, but going to her office hours helped me a lot. She is into gender studies, so don't take this class with her if you hate hearing feminist readings of literature.
Tiffany Potter's delivery of information and analyses of both literary and stylistics of English is incomparable to other English professors at UBC. Her engaged, intelligent, seamlessly prepared lectures go beyond marks: you learn so much through her words, grades don't begin to matter, education begins to flourish with educators like her.
If you're a fan of Enlish lit then you'll love her. She's engaging and interestng. She brings the course readings to life. Her students are rewarded for original ideas, whether she agrees with them or not. She's crystal clear about what she expects. Truly the best prof I've ever had! :)
Good lecturer, interesting classes, but an odd fascination with class participation instead of lecturing and a ridiculously hard marker, barely passed with papers that would have scored A's with other profs and classes. If you're trying to keep up your GPA, especially to get into a specific program, avoid her like WILDFIRE!
Awesome prof--interesting and actually interested in engaging what students think, instead of just lecturing. I learned a lot and never wanted to miss a class. She marks hard, but if you do the work you do fine, if you write it the night before, she KNOWS!
Terrible prof!! She is consistent in giving out poor grades no matter what you hand in, good and bad, each will have the same percentage...gpa bomb
I could listen to her speak all day - she's very interesting and made me see things in a different way. Exams weren't as bad as they could've been as you are given options on what to write about. She goes on about "significance" - when writing, KNOW what you're talking about and WHY!
Professor Potter is an amazing prof. She makes topics so interesting and her lectures are fun and engaging. Take lots of notes and do not miss classes! She is by no means an easy marker. Take advantage of office hours and use her feedback as best as you can. Honestly, one of the nicest most helpful profs I have ever had.
Her lectures were engaging and she made it clear how to do well in the course. I didn't find her to be a particularly hard marker (I got a high A), but the class average was 66, so make of that what you will.
Very passionate, fairly engaging in class and takes the time to get to know you. Her comments on papers are extremely helpful, she clearly wants you to do well. It is helpful to go to class but not mandatory (which I like in an upper level course. Attendance is an annoying way to gain/lose marks that should go towards quality of work turned in).
She was a great professor! I did not like English during my secondary school years but she made it very enjoyable for me! She has a great sense of humour and was so funny when she taught us exam techniques in the last lecture. Definitely take a class with her if you want to take a first year English course. Easy 3 credits for me.
Smart and interesting, and I liked the way that popular culture was a scholarly topic for the 18th century. Not THAT hard a marker, either.
I didn't find Tiffany to be a particularly hard marker and she was very clear in her grading criteria. Her lectures are insightful and are very helpful for writing papers. Take her class- you'll learn a lot.
She is an insanely good lecturer, always captivating and tries to include the whole lecture hall, regardless of their unwillingness to participate, she will literally call upon students to give answers. She is so good and is always very passionate about Engl 110, relating it to contemporary pieces to make it more interesting for everyone.
I absolutely hate studying English but Dr Potter actually made lecture engaging on what could be a very dry subject! She expects a lot but I do feel like I actually learned a lot in the class, despite hating the subject. Lectures aren't mandatory but tutorial has participation marks. TAs mark all the assignments so marking is dependent on TA
Potter was hands down the best professor I've had at UBC. She was extremely clear and structured. Made it very clear what was to be expected on exams, gave advice on how to study not only for this class but for everything. Very helpful, interesting and light reading load compared to most english courses. Would take any class with her in the future.
Dr. Tiffany Potter's lectures are amazing, she is very passionate about each topic and explains it in a way that I never thought of. The marking is done by her TA's, I was lucky to get a good one.
Tiffany is super engaging, concise and well-spoken. Her theme was "Humanity's Biggest Questions" (Othello, Life of Pi, Island of Dr. Moreau, misc. poems) that mainly tackled what exactly defines humanity vs. animals, the motivations and consequences of character's actions. Taking good notes during her lectures is key though - she doesn't use PPT.
Tiffany Potter is an excellent lecturer because she tells us everything that we need to know and it is very clear. She's very passionate about the subject matter and really nice too. Note-taking by hand is encouraged and reading material is good (both in quantity and quality).
Take these ratings with a grain of salt. The prof was knowledgable and had interesting lectures. Light reading load was good but in class writing assignments and a long final paper were stressing. I was hoping she would make me like English but unfortunately didn't. I got a higher final grade than I expected though.
If you are international student, plz do NOT take her for language requirement! Her assessment is brutal for international student. We do NOT have the commonsense needed for these literatures. It will be brutal for us... if you just wish for a pass, ignore my word. Otherwise, don't take her.
i absolutely loved this prof. the theme she chose for our class was really interesting. we read shakespeare which i hate but she actually made it enjoyable. she's very energetic and passionate and relatable in a weird way. she doesn't use slides and doesn't allow you to take notes electronically but other than that she's amazing
wow. this course really changed how i view the world. i can't speak more highly of dr. potter and her amazing team. not too much reading, and the books are super interesting. lots of in-class essays though. for me the best part was the exposure to literary criticism. i would highly recommend this as an elective! Dr. Potter is a QUEEN!
Dr. Potter is a phenomenal professor. She has changed how I view almost everything. You can really tell that she cares about teaching, as she is passionate about the subject and understands that students have heavy workloads so she tries to keep the reading requirements low. The final exam was very fair and almost fun to write. :)
Very energetic though not much work to do. Lectures consist of basically her talking, and the content wasn't interesting for me so I slept in multiple lectures despite her enthusiasm and humour. TA's mark the work, try to read the books in time.
Super nice and supportive teacher. Clearly loves her subject and her passion did rub off on me. Her classes and perspectives were super interesting too! We did have two big research papers in the term but gave us 4 dates to turn in 2 papers. The final was also pretty vague and quite hard. Overall good but not an "easy course", got to work hard.
Dr. Potter was a great prof to have for literature! She brings up a lot of compelling points and connects literature to historical context/other academics, and is very passionate about the course material. grading weighed too heavily on in-class essays for my taste, but the lectures were neat.
This prof cares a lot about the course material and is very good at teaching it. I wasn't super interested personally so I didn't pay attention to the lectures too much but I still found that she was very good when I did tune in a bit more. Do the readings early and maybe twice and worry about the essays and the final (which is the hardest part).
You are immediately at a huge disadvantage if you didnt take English honours/AP in high school. I got As in regular English in high school but I was so ill-prepared. You are assessed throughout the course for your writing without being taught how to write. Prof focuses solely on abstract ideas. The good reviews are all from English nerds.
Amazing Prof! Specifically in how great her feedback was. She totally changed the way I think about essay writing. The class is mainly difficult because it's moderately essential to read the books if you want to write good essays, and the course is mostly graded on essays. That said, her lectures make the books more interesting.
(2019W1) no phones in class which make sense. my TA was a tough grader and she goes through interesting concepts in class but she sort of just talks about her conspiracies and you just have to write everything down. i dont really get how arts classes roll without exact answers :( so take this with a grain of salt from a science (math) student
No lecture notes. No electronics allowed. You need to take notes quickly in class. You're also marked on writing without being taught how to write university-level papers.
I made the initial mistake of sleeping through the 9am zoom lectures and not paying attention. When I started going to the in-person lectures, I realized how valuable her discussion was. She's really passionate and the info you get in class you really can't get otherwise. Go to class, it feels like it goes by in 5 mins. Dont make my mistake!
It's worth taking Dr. Potter's class if you want to really learn English in an interactive environment. Compared to my friends' profs she uses only a few books (~3) and takes time discussing thoughtful points in each one. You'll learn how to write papers by trying it out then asking questions about the marked version. She is amazing!
ENGL110 taught by Dr. Potter is my all-time favourite course. She is such an inspirational, spunky and fun lecturer. I have never liked literature classes in the past, so it is quite remarkable that this is my favourite, and the credit is entirely due to Dr. Potter. Such an incredible class... you won't regret taking it!
Dr. Potter is amazing! I was nervous about taking my first English course at university but she is so smart, inspiring, funny. From day 1 I felt really supported by her. She doesn't allow using any devices or tech in class so get ready to write your notes by hand. Attendance is highly recommended since she posts slides but not detailed notes.
My best introduction to UBC thus far!! Professor Potter is kind, caring, and so understanding. I took a 9am literature class with her and she walked in every morning full of energy and enthusiasm to deliver a fun lecture. Love her!!
Dr. Potter is awesome and the lectures are easy to follow. I love that she is very knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches, it makes the classes super interesting and enjoyable. Not a really writing-heavy class, it mostly focuses on analyzing texts which is cool. I would highly recommend her if you are taking a 1st year English course.
Amazing professor! She made English really enjoyable and interesting! 100% would recommend.
Great lecturer, engaging. Tries to help out the non-arts students because she's aware that a good chunk of students are taking the course for the communication requirement. Overall decent, just lots of writing that can be toughly graded.
Dr. Potter was an amazing 1st year English prof! Really engaging and entertaining lectures, and she was super caring throughout the term! She also uses fewer texts compared to other sections, and the workload for the course is manageable, as assessments are spread out throughout the term. Don't expect the course to be an easy A though.
Potter is an enthusiastic and informed lecturer. The entirety of your grade will be determined by the marking of the TAs, so unfortunately it does differ. This is literature class not a writing class, so make sure you have a prior foundation of basic writing techniques. Most of grade is evaluated by in-class essays, so know the content well
She is very caring, however your grade and experience wholly depends on your TA as they are the only one marking your work. Prof Potter is great and all and gives good lectures most of the time, but she is not the one, at the end of the day, grading your work or giving feedback, only giving info.
Potter was AMAZING. Very approachable and funny, treats you like a human being rather than just a number. Although it isn't a writing course, most assessments are fundamentally based on writing, but also applying your knowledge from class and elevating the material. Be ready to read and actually UNDERSTAND the content. She doesn't record lectures.
dr potter is an absolute gem. her lectures are very easy to follow and she is easily accessible outside of class. she is one of the few profs that really understands that students have busy lives (thank god for the 5 day 'red card' extension that you could use on any assignment) and is super caring. clear grader, great feedback, super lovely person
honestly the most brutal grader that I've had during my four years at ubc. She is obviously very knowledgeable in her field and her lectures were super interesting but a challenge course nonetheless. avoid if you don't want your gpa to plummet, but take her class if you are more interested in the subject than getting a good grade.
Dr. Potter is fantastic! ENGL 351 was more theory heavy than some of my other English classes, but it definitely helped me to improve my reading and writing. Dr. Potter provides some really great and interesting theorists to work with, which really enhanced my whole experience of the class. I found her marking very fair and not at all unreasonable.
highly recommend! I admit I was not sure I would like the 18th century but Dr Potter's lectures are super interesting and energetic (you def need class to ace the final). Reading was managable, assignments have lots of options. I liked the discussion days when we talked about questions with groups before choosing whether to write that essay.
Extremely engaging, prepared, and caring professor. The class was at 9am but I didn't skip a single lecture, there was always something interesting to learn and the way Dr. Potter presented everything she taught was super engaging!
Expects university level papers when they don't teach us how to do it. It's a literature not a writing course. Going to be very difficult to manage this class if you have other classes with heavy workload. They pride themselves on ENGL110 being the hardest course in uni but why??? It's a first year english course come on.
The professor herself is actually a very sweet and kind person, its such a shame that she doesn't give enough assessments, because it drags your mark down considerably. Pay attention to which TA you have because some of them are REALLY harsh markers. Make sure you go to every class though, its impossible to pass the class without attending them.
Dr. Potter was a highly caring and knowledgeable prof. Her grading was extremely fair and I found lectures interesting despite not being a huge fan of the 18th century beforehand. Not a class to cram for but if you plan ahead you'll be great!
Professor Potter was a really entertaining and sweet prof who is really knowledgeable in her subject. I don't usually enjoy English, but she made me enjoy this class and the reading load isn't too much.
I am in Sciences so I was initially hesitant about taking an English course. Dr. Potter made this course very enjoyable. Every lecture was very interesting and entertaining, I was always excited to come to class! Dr. Potter was always caring, reassuring, and great at explaining things to first year students. Overall a very positive experience:)
Dr Potter was a fun prof and was kind. She knows the material she teaches very well. As a non-English major taking this course as a pre-req, the material was way too difficult for me. I took this course cuz I thought we wouldn't be writing. We still have to write essays, it's just expected you're already good at them.
Can be a really easy or hard marker depending on your TA. Very enthusiastic in lectures but stutters a lot and is hard to follow along. If your not in love with Shakespeare or literature in general you will probably have a rough time. You can probably go the whole semester without attending a single lecture and just reading the material.
ENGL110 is a course you take for the communication requirement. Dr. Potter is passionate and fair with regards to the course, but as with most english courses, it has an unnecessarily heavy workload.
amazing lecturer - was not previously interested in 18th c lit. but she is so passionate and knowledgeable in her field. also very caring and helpful prof: always accessible outside of class and gives really good feedback
Potter's class changed the way I think about English. There was just 1 play and poems and 5 short stories, so workload was way better than I thought, and the course was actually kind of unexpectedly fun even at 9am. She is so smart and energetic and explains things so clearly that I finally get what poetry is. We also read verycool Maori stories.
I did not actually have Tiffany as a prof BUT JUST NOW at No Frills there were no baby tomatoes left and my roommates and I were complaining at the self checkout and explaining how we were so sad. Tiffany turned around and GAVE US her tomatoes that she had just bought!!!! Just sooo selfless and kind, this woman is awesome:) Thank you Tiffany!!
I had Dr. Potter for both ENGL110 (which inspired me to major in English) and ENGL351 and she is absolutely fabulous. Her lectures are highly insightful and entertaining, and her expectations are crystal clear. Her classes aren't the easiest, but you will definitely learn a ton about things you didn't even know you wanted to learn about.
I hate poetry and morning courses so I was 100% prepared to hate this course, but Dr. Potter is such a fun lecturer that I was actually excited to go to this class. Assignments are graded fairly and not too difficult. Overall it's a really good course for non-English majors to fulfill a lit requirement
This course and the grade you receive is entirely dependent on your TA, as they mark ALL the assignments. I found Dr. Potter's lectures very interesting (changed the way I look at English), but at the end of the day, they only provide some insight as to how you should view literature. What you write on essays is entirely up to your own ideas.
She knows what she's talking about and her lectures are great and super engaging. The marking was a little hard. Make sure to take notes and go to every lecture because something she talks about (that you might think was on a whim) can end up being final testing material. The slides were not great.
Took for ENG 110. If you are not infatuated with English Literature or Shakespearean texts this is absolutely and I mean absolutely not the class for you.
passionate professor and very insightful. she obviously knows what she is talking about which makes lectures engaging. however, her syllabus explicitly says, "this is not a writing course" but all we do is write. her powerpoint slides are hard to follow and are poorly made.
dr. potter is SO smart and engaging, her lectures felt like watching a tv show (in a good way). english has always been easy for me but WOW this class was harder than i anticipated. very interesting if you put it all your effort. i loved the shakespeare part. she is so passionate and funny and makes everything so much more interesting
Potter was a very good prof for my first english course at ubc. Lectures are so interesting and I learned a lot about how to understand literature and explain my ideas. Lots of smaller assignments instead of one big one. 10/10 would take another course with her
This was the second time I took Tiffany's class and she was amazing both times. She chooses super interesting things to read (adaptation! popular culture!) and she does a really good job making sure that everyone is part of the conversations. Generous with time in office hours, and gives tons of feedback on essays.
Professor Potter's lectures were engaging and insightful, though the marking can be tricky. unstuckstudy and the free textbook were helpful study tools. Definitely attend class, as her discussions often cover key exam content.
I really enjoyed this seminar: Dr. Potter provided balance between providing the scholarly expertise and getting us to contribute our own opinions in class for our stronger understanding. I appreciate how Dr. Potter aimed to cultivate a sense of community. I have had very few classes where I so genuinely enjoyed my classmates and instructor
Lots of readings that you'll have to know for the midterm and exams, but graded fairly. I went to office hours one time and Potter gave really great writing advice that I still use today.
This was my very first class in University and I must say Dr Potter really know how to teach! Basically, if you showed up to the lectures and paid attention, you will do good. Most essays and in class assignments were TA graded. Final was pretty good if you reviewed how she said to do it and I didn't feel anything was unfair. Would recommend!
Tiffany was amazing. Presentation plus an essay, but mostly discussing and debating around a table, doing deep dives into old literature that feels so relevant when you look at it like she does. Take any seminar she teaches if you get the chance
Dr. Potter was an amazing prof! She's super passionate about the content and her enthusiasm really shows. Even though the class was at 9AM I looked forward to it every morning. The final was relatively straightforward and assessments are TA marked but doable if you show up to lecture.
This class was so different from my high school. We talked about much more interesting and complicated ideas that made me think in a new way about literature. I also finally understand poetry!
Great prof. Lots of feedback and lectures are very engaging.
Love her! getting to early morning class was tough but Potter is energetic and worth getting up for. Not too much reading and generally pretty interesting. Good lectures
I got a 65 in this course. For reference, I've gotten 80+ in all my other english courses. She is terrible at teaching and the way she wants you to write your essays are completely different from how you'll write them in any other english course. I learned nothing and the class was boring as well.
Good course and professor potter keeps it interesting. Reasonable number of assignments and pretty light reading. Class average was 72 and median 74 so pretty normal for first year (newbie hack: always check the ubc grades website!!!)
Tiffany is super sweet! She gives lots of hints about what will be on the tests, so attending lectures is a good idea. There are two books and several short stories and poems to read, and it's important to get those done. The grading relies more heavily on the TA, so fingers crossed you get a good one.
I did not think I would like the eighteenth century but took it for a requirement. The focus on theories of popular culture was totally new for me and so interesting. Tiffany is crazy smart and also supportive, readings were mostly good and course has flexible assignments.
I love Dr potter! She makes her lectures super engaging and is crazy enthusiastic in the morning! But the TA's in this course have some sort of God complex with the marking… so make sure you have a good TA because I didn't which made this class hell for me.
Great in class, but very tough when it comes to tests and assignments. She'll expect you to have very long and specific reading materials and will grade for it even if it's not covered in class. Assignments are shoved together so make sure to organize yourself or you won't have time to do everything. Be prepared to write a lot and write fast.
Dr. Potter is a great instructor! Took her course for the first time as a freshman this year planning on majoring in English Literature, and her amazing lectures reinforced my desire for that degree even more! She is super analytical, loves close reading texts, is a great scholar, and is highly knowledgeable of her subject! Very recommended!
She's great. The course was great. Take her course. that is all.
Tiffany was a great prof and introduction into the University world! She was kind and the grading was dependant on the TA for most assignments but the final was very fair and as an average student science student forced to take an english class, I enjoyed it and did better than I thought. Do the readings and you'll be fine!
She is AMAZING! She dives deep into the readings and is very passionate about the analysis of the pieces. I absolutely loved this class, I would recommend it to anyone. The grading is mainly done by the TA, but her assignments are also not very hard.
