Intelligent, funny, great professor, knows his stuff. I wish he taught all my German classes.
A lot of material to cover, but he's fun!
The class is not easy but he's fun and will help you. Excellent teaching style. He expects you to be an adult and treats you as such. He's open to any all feedback. Nice guy, hard class. As he'll tell you on day one, it's 5 credit hours so don't slack and don't expect to get 5 credit hours for 3 credit hours work. I loved him.
I highly recommend Altanero, he is hilarious and made German class very entertaining. Plus he is definetely kind of cute.
Pretty easy class. On days where the lesson would have left us endlessly bored, Mr. A provided comic relief and made the work interesting. He tolerates annoying Frenchwomen but grades like a Nazi on pop quizzes. As for the hottness factor, I wonder if he wrote some of the reviews himself? LOL Nah jk jk. For him I would give two chili peppers!
The class is hard and I took it in the 5 weeks but Prof. Altanero does a great job. He is organized and knows Spanish backwards and forwards. You will work really hard but learn a lot. He is also very entertaining.

Although I can't seem to understand Spanish, professor Altanero is an excellent teacher. He's pretty lenient when it comes to grades, and he's hilarious.
Wow... this was a really hard class. Dr. Tim will tell you that at the outset and this is the hardest online course I've ever had. Take him online if you are dedicated, know your stuff, and are willing to ask for help when you need it. He's spot on in responsiveness and helpfulness, but if you slack, it's so over for you.
Wouldn't boost my grade the .8 I needed to make a C for the course. I never missed a class. Participated willingly (albeit not perfectly because I'm not fluent). Did all my homework. Don't know what the problem was.
He's tough, to be sure, but I enjoyed him. He gives all kinds of little nudges here and there to help you pass. He won't give you a grade you didn't earn so the previous comment seems like sour g****s to me. He was always there for me, helped me, and tried to make a tough class enjoyable and motivated me.
This class was great. Although I had to drop out due to increased work duties, I really enjoyed the class. Dr. Altanero uses many different approaches to aid learning and the class was fun. It is an online course, but everything is clear and the expectations are communicated very well. I would definitely recommend this course to others.
I hate Spanish but I liked him... class was fun!
Professor Altanero was the best I enjoyed this class very much! He goes over everything very well and is extremely helpful I would definitely recommend him!
Even though I got a C, he was great! Helpful, available. I wish I had him for Spanish I!
He is brilliant, fun, sarcastic, fair, and so very helpful and attentive. Perfect!
This is the most fun I've had in Spanish ever! He's tough, but he curves the tests. He's made it clear that he won't add points at the end of the semester to change a grade. You can get points just for going to a restaurant!!
Nice guy who makes class interesting. However because he gives you the chance with bonus work to raise your grade he is steadfast about giving you the grade you earned and not bumping you up any, no matter how close.
Hard as they come. Nice but so hard. Wouldn't take him again if you paid me.
Don't take this course in the summer term - it's really tough! He was nice though and very funny. Oh, and cute, too!
he's very tough i don't like him at all
I wish Dr. Tim would adopt me!
Darn it! He's married. The class is usually fun. I love his "so above that" style... not a class without a laugh.
Loved him. Mean, tough, practical. And hilarious.
Horrible textbook! Dr. Tim helped all along the way and made the bad text work! Love him!
Herr Altanero is more of a Spanish teacher obviously but he is also a GREAT German one at that. He was really helpful with pronunciation. Study and learn the work, German is hard on its own. Tests are not vocabulary words.. He is quite funny and this was my favorite class this semester!!
Epic. Hilarious. Best prof I've had.
Fun and intelligent professor, relatively easy class. If you took spanish in HS this will be a breeze. Do the HW he assigns, because most of those questions are on the test. Attendance isn't required, but he dropped me after missing 3 classes in a row, so go to class; you'll definitely laugh a few times.
His lectures were humorous. However, he does not teach well. You would be the same if you just bought the book and tried to learn by yourself. According to ACC he has a 35 to 41% drop rate. Also, 20% failure rate (D or F). More than half will drop or fail. If you do not already know Spanish... I highly recommend you not take his class.
I wish they would clone him so I could take him for all my classes.
Dr. Tim is a fantastic German teacher! My only complaint is that he does not teach German 2. His classes were laid back and fun and I feel like I finished the semester with a good grasp on basic German language skills.
The class is HARD online. It is pretty much like teaching yourself Spanish, with someone to clarify any questions that you might come up with on your own. He is very helpful if you have a question, but you def need to work hard at this class. Quizzes online can be unforgiving. Material challenging.
German is not an easy language to learn. But it is here! People, people, people: the questions on the tests are the same format as the exercises in the book. Keep up with your workbook, go to class, study, actually get a partner and spend time conversing in German, and you're golden.
Fun class, he keeps it interesting and you learn about German culture as well as the language. The tests were always easier than I expected them to be, study the exercises on grammar in the books and you'll do fine. Very fair & accommodating teacher. Wish he taught German 2!
This class was a lot harder than I thought it would be! Dr. Tim is so much fun but he doesn't take a lot of nonsense. Go to class, do the work, and you'll be fine! And yes, he's pretty hot if you like older guys.
Great teacher, quizzes are hard! You have to study!
Oh my. He's definitely hot and his teaching is probably the best I've had. I didn't appreciate him until I got to Spanish II. Take him!! And take him again!!
He was very uninterested in my class. I don't blame him for missing the first 2 weeks (he might have had a good reason). But he did nothing to help my class get back up to speed.
Hilarious! Beyond that he's so helpful. Best Spanish prof I've ever had.
Timmy is not the most informative teacher, but he is definitely the most hilarious and fun I've ever come across. It's a super easy class. You'll learn as much as you want to learn while getting an easy grade.
Took the distance learning course. Very uncooperative, mis-graded several answers on tests as well as online assignments, offered little to no insight on ways to improve, didn't follow guidelines in syllabus... If you must take him, take him in person as it seems he's much more interested in those classes than the distance learning ones.
He was great! Hilarious and fun class. Takes plenty of time answer your questions. I wish he taught SPAN 2!
I read the reviews for Mr. Altanero before taking him. He IS extremely serious about attendance, and given the pace that the class moves at, I feel he's justified. He was the one that advocated for Vistas, so is very knowledgable about it and assigns online HW from it. It's a lot of HW, but it gives you immediate feedback. Good teacher.
I took his online Spanish I class and he is a terrible teacher. Very unorganized and tests are not always over the correct material. When I took test ch 3 he added stuff I didn't know from ch 4. I do not reccommend taking him unless you don't care about your grade. Spanish sould be fun not hard. DONT TAKE HIM!
I had him for online Spanish and he helped me a lot! There is a lot of reading and exercises though.
This was my favorite class! Easy and fun prof!
Altanero was definitely a lot of fun. Easy tests. Knows Spanish inside out. One of the best profs I've had.
This is the worst "instruction" I have ever received. He goes out of his way to be difficult and operates his class with a chip on his shoulder. Even if you do all of the extra assignments he will not give out grades appropriate to proven knowledge. Pass this class for a professor who wants their students to succeed.
Fantastic Class. Dr. Altanero really knows his stuff and completely engages the class. It is hard work, but he is more than willing to help. Attendance is a must if you want to keep up. His syllabus is helpful and easy to understand. I would definately recommend his class for anyone serious about learning another language.
Altenero's a great instructor. Makes an honest effort to continually engage students, and he's always around for his office hours. Concise grading and attendance policies. Tests are all mirror images of online VHL HW assignments. Straightforward class that was also enjoyable. I recommend taking it as long as you adhere to 3 absence max policy!!
Professor Altanero is amazing. His lectures are straightforward, and his grading is fair and accurate. Took his class in the summer, and wished that I took all Spanish levels with him.
Dr. Altanero is great! The best thing about his class is that he grades fairly. He is very clear and is willing to help you as possible. Awesome experience.
VERY CONFUSING! I asked him for help with my course, he gladly Skyped with me and informed me I was on track! Then when I found out my grade, I failed the course!! I thought I was doing everything he told us to do. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
This class was very well-organized. All of the assignments are given upfront with due dates and if you ever have a question, he is spot-on in giving a quick response and/or meeting with you. Great class!
I LOVED him! He is a very straight shooter and always fair. He's hilarious but is strict about attendance. I'd easily take him again. Easy A if you do the work and attend class.
One of the best profs I've had.
Great prof! Ready to help, very funny, but will enforce that attendance policy.
Best Spanish class I ever had! Watch that attendance policy - he's ruthless about it.
Very helpful. Loved him.
Hilarious! Never a class without a laugh. He was far and away the best Spanish prof I've had - and this is my 3rd time! Take him especially if you need tough love.
This professor is very funny. He does a lot of engaging with the class, like playing pictionary with the Spanish vocabulary. There's always a quiz at the beginning of class, but they aren't too hard. He's very serious about attendance. I highly recommend him.
I love him. He's engaging, smart, and his assignments are pretty easy and you have a long time to do them. That being said, he does demand that you attend and he's on you about your progress. He's exactly what I need after three times taking this course with other profs.
This was a really hard class to take online. He's very clear about what you need to do and helped me with the course material. But you have to ask.
Wouldn't let me take the tests outside the testing center even though I was out of state commuting to Austin every week. I had a problem with a test one week and submitted a help form via the testing center and he didn't even know who I was. Bad prof to take if you want to actually learn Spanish.
He's interesting. He expects you to do the work by the deadlines and there's no extra credit. On the other hand, he gives you his personal phone number which I found handy when I had questions. He's a lot a help but you have to ask. He's clear about what he expects and doesn't deviate from that. Not for everyone but I liked him.
Fun and funny teacher. Definitely eccentric. He learned German specifically to teach this course, which is interesting. He sounds really good when he speaks in German and knows his stuff. Other students complained about the textbook, but I found no problems with it. BUY THE WORKBOOK!!! It will save you so much time on the HW and is 100% worth it.
Tim is a great German professor. He's well traveled and although he makes you work very hard for your grade, he is quite helpful and entertaining. Class periods were long but he gave us a short break and often let us out early. He has the "3 absence drop" rule but be respectful and study hard and you can miss a little more than that.
Only teaching to remain head of department. only uses the book. moves too quickly for students and is not clear on how to use language. he assumes you can figure it out. always ended class early. super nice guy, doesn't care much about his classes.
I loved him! He treats you as an adult, respects your time, and is always available to help. He's also hilarious. Not always G-rated though.
Say what? This guy rocks. He really tries to help you! He has lots of funny stories to help you understand the material. Hilarious. Fun. This was the best Spanish class I've had so far! Beware of the candy treats! They can be spicy!
How to get an A: Know the vocab COLD before doing any assignments, do the assignments, ask questions via e-mail/phone/in-person to Tim. He's a great teacher and wants you to succeed. Watch the tips on his Vimeo channel before taking the exam. Pay attention to every part of the assignments, all parts are fair game for exams. Lots of work (5 weeks).
Great professor, really cares about the students. Taught the class in English (5.5 week session) although sounds like he teaches more in Spanish during regularly paced classes. If you attend class/ do the online homework it will be easy to pass. Best spanish professor I've had.
Love him! He made time to help me he's very clear about grading. He also explains difficult concepts in several helpful videos. He's also very interesting and informative beyond the material.
Had him over the summer. He worked to help me pass and explained everything with patience in and out of class.
Knows his stuff and always ready to help! I've not had a prof like this before. He gives you what you need to know in Spanish - clear and concise. He's a very interesting guy and has a lot of guidance and help to offer if you ask. He doesn't seem to have much patience for students who come late/don't attend.
Dr. Altanero wants his students to succeed and is willing to dedicate time outside of class to help students who are willing to ask.
2018-Online Course. Refused to work with students, and did not give clear instructions/outline. Only had destructive criticism to offer students. Any "helpful" comments were written sarcastically and belittling. I made an A in the class, it is easy, all online/testing center. A robotic professor would've been better for this course.
Loved him. Took him online for an 8-week course. Answered email very quickly, gave his personal phone number, and really tried to connect with me. He's upfront and genuine. Not the usual online prof who ignores the class.
I love his "holier than thou" attitude! He just cracks me up every single time. He tries to make the class fun and he's a great teacher.
He's "there" - which I really liked. He gives you his personal number and is easy to meet with. Willing to help and tutor. Not the usual absent online prof. No help if you don't ask. (Thank God I did!)
Psst - take this guy.
I love this guy. The best was when he started a class shouting like a lunatic, banging his shoe on the podium. When he paused - for drama of course - he took a question. "I don't understand". Shuffled his papers. "Sorry, I thought this was the Russian history class."
Love him! He just takes the time to help and teaches to the level of the class. He seems like he just wants to help us get through the course. And he's cute and funny.
Yup. Take him.
He wasn't for me but I'm still rating him high. Why? He really tries and answers email and phone fast. I'm an older student and thought I could breeze through an online Spanish II class online in 6 weeks. Apparently I need to re-think that premise.
Loved him! Dr. Altanero was ready to tutor and help by phone, email, and in person outside of office hours and really tried to help me. He's quick to answer email and grades promptly. Not used to that with online courses!
No late submissions or redos, so missing even one test or lesson can be dangerous. VHL assignments are graded for completion.
Prof. Altanero is one of the most hard working teachers I've had. He truly cares about his students learning and succeeding. He always responded to emails quickly & was happy to help if you needed it. If you work for it, you will understand. Teaches at a fast pace, but will stay after class to help you if need be. I am taking him next semester!
His online class is pretty straightforward - no surprises. Lots of homework but it's easy and you get to do it a few times to get it right.
Love, love, love him! He's quick to answer email and gives great feedback on tests when you have ask. Pretty easy class.
I had him in class and online. LOVE him in class! He's great online but he taught me something - you have to ask for help if you need it. You miss his awesome humor if you take him online and he's super-helpful, gets to the point, and won't waste your time. 5 tests, 5 HW. Definitely recommend.
He's a great teacher! I took his hybrid course and wow, he really knows Spanish and how to explain it to you. And he's hilarious.
Mwah. Can I love a prof more? He knows how to teach and he knows that too. I've taken more than 5 years of Spanish from high school to UT and this is the first time someone took the time to explain to me how the language works - and it finally makes sense! Love him!
He knows how to explain Spanish! I took Spanish in HS but never had anyone explain to me how the language works. Best Spanish class ever.
Awesome. This guy is very responsive to email and always available to help. He grades fast too. Tests are straightforward. One thing to be aware of - he does not take late work and is strict on that.
Great professor. I took him for Spanish 1 and got a high B, but his Spanish 2 class is significantly harder (at least it was for me). DO THE HOMEWORK and it may save your grade. I didn't like how the tests were structured and did poorly on them. He is hilarious and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend for Spanish 1, not so much for Spanish 2.
I took Professor Altanero in a hybrid class which I loved. It was great getting the grammar and speaking practice in class with him but doing all the assigned online homeworks and studying outside of class rather than having busywork in class. He is so funny and really helps his students learn
I have had 3 WONDERFUL Spanish professors at ACC but Professor Altanero was by far the worst. Most days he didn't seem to care and always let class out early by at least 20 minutes. I left his Spanish III summer course feeling extremely unprepared and unsatisfied with the way he taught his curriculum. Do yourself a favor and skip his course.
This is an online introductory Spanish Class. He "encourages you to ask questions" but every time a question is asked he responds disrespectfully without actually answering it. Because of this I no longer ask questions as I know he won't help. I could tell just from the wording of the syllabus that it would be like this. Talks to us like invalids.
I haven't even finished the course yet but I already have made up my mind about this professor. This is a fully online class with no synchronous meeting times so I know nothing about Mr. Altanero. To be frank, I don't know what he is getting paid for. There is no teaching coming from him, everything is done in the website called Vistas.
Everytime I take his tests I want to throw up the entire time. They are so hard. You do so much homework and the test is nothing like how you answer questions on the homework. He apparently wants you to be a professional spanish speaker on your tests, then if you miss something there is no feedback except short you didn't answer this right comments
If you get one little thing wrong on his tests that don't even match the days and days of homework you have to do he counts the whole thing wrong. He has videos that explain very little so basically your teaching yourself.
Don't take this class unless you already know how to speak spanish!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have ZERO clue how this professor isnt ZERO Quality&FIVE Difficulty. Seriously, think he reviews himself, theres just no way, reviews DO NOT MATCH CLASS. You will do homework DAYS on end & DONT MATCH his tests! Multiple classmates&myself have been scoring whole semester w/30s and 40s on tests w/no feedback! Unclear grading, no teaching, notcaring
No feedback,HW that covers a ridiculous amount of matieral and only count20% of grade, test count for 80% +they are SOOOOOOOOOOO hard, there is no test review or example you will have no idea what will be on there and it appears he makes most of it up himself. So unless you study for WEEKS for exam on top of weeks of HW you will fail
NO leniency if you miss due dates or can not make a due date and I mean none whatsoever. Even if your one and four year old are home with you due to the Rona for 2 weeks. Times have changed man, have a little compassion or don't I don't care cause I am never taking his class again. It was aweful aside from no make up homework/exams.
You have no clue the whole semester what your grade is and what shows on the website that you do your homework is different when your grade is shown in blackboard.
Nothing more to say! WORST PROFESOR I HAVE EVER HAD!! Self centered, doesn't respond to emails with the correct information. Honestly, GET ANOTHER PROFESSOR! This guy is TRASH! Purchased Rosetta Stone, and also had group sessions to make it. I should have paid myself to take this course. Nothing good to say except his class is over!
He may be a great in person teacher but online not. He can't work Zoom which is his choice for instruction so really all it was, was watching him read our textbook. Tests are extremely hard for a first time Spanish class and there's no review. His comments are ridiculous and not helpful on your test either. He doesn't even know if you're in class.
Don't let the past reviews fool you, this class was not it, tried my best, even had my Spanish friends help, and it was hard for them, I understand that this was an online class but this professor was extremely rude and I did not learn anything from this dude at all, I will honestly say that I learned more from my classmates in this course. SMH!!!!
So so so so so so funny! It is important to do all of the homework and do well on the tests. I would take this class in person as opposed to online. It is important to do everything on time.
PLEASE don't take. It was agonizing. Told us textbook and Spanish speakers were wrong. Had a question on orientation quiz say death of a family member is not an acceptable excuse when turning in something late. NEVER responds to emails. Took class again in an intense mini-course, passed with an A. Worst prof I've had. Good reviews HAVE to be him.
He did not care very much about how his students did, he was a decent prof.
Overall, Altanero was an ok professor. I found the tests very difficult despite studying a LOT. He is helpful answering questions, but a bit condescending, and when I asked about fixing a grade I felt was unfair he was unresponsive, which tanked my average. I feel like the class was more stressful than it needed to be, but the format was forward.
He was a decent professor but never knew what was going on half the time with assignments and classes. To be fair he was given this class pretty late, but it was still a mess a semester. His teaching style is okay, but when it comes to learning a whole language it could be better and more organized. He's pretty funny and chill with grading.
This professor can be hit or miss - the class can be a struggle, but using resources like Unstuck AI alongside the textbook might help. Stay engaged and attend all classes to maximize your chances of success.
