3 exams all online and extremely easy. On the first test like half of the class got 100. The other tests were harder but still very easy. The final is optional and can't hurt your grade. Very little homework. Totally aceable course. Tim is likeable, knowledgable, and reasonable.
"You will pass this class if you do something". This quote sums up his class. exams are online and aren't very hard if you make a good equation sheet (watch out for his second exam though). Final is optional. The guy loves the stuff he talks about, and is knowledgeable, but can be hard to pay attention to in class if he drones on while talking.
Professor Cullinan is a great professor. His methods are clean, and his course is fun. He does exciting and often funny demonstrations in front of class most days, and always has a lame but funny joke somewhere in his lectures. The class is not too difficult, but still worth attending lectures.
Lectures are long and it is hard to stay focused. He stands on the stairs reading off the lecture slides. Tests aren't terribly hard but you still need to study for them. Overall, wasn't a horrible professor, just could be dry at times.
It's okay if you like vague tests and misleading information.
The class seems easy at the beginning, but don't let that fool you. You have to study to get a good grade. He mostly reads verbatim from the lecture slides, but you still have to go to class to get the quiz passwords. If you don't like online homework, quizzes, or tests, you may not enjoy the class, but you have to get through it and it's not hard.
Probably the most boring lecturer i have had at Iowa State. Long lectures in which i have seen several kids sleeping in class. Review sessions were very helpful however. All tests have an online format which I personally do not like but I know some do. Also you get little to no feedback on exams due to the online format.
Lectures are boring, but they give you all the information you need to do well on the tests (no book reading required). He does a really good job of letting you know what the grading is based on and what you need to do to get a certain grade. The material isn't too tough, so if you pay attention in class, you should do fine.
His lectures are so boring, and you can easily be fine if you don't go. Just know people in the class and in the other lectures to get the password and quiz answers that you get every day. Know the conceptual stuff, because that is where I lost points on the tests. make a good cheat sheet and you will do well.
He is a very straightforward professor. He gives lecture slides and he doesn't intend for you to take notes. If you pay attention in class and do practice exams and problems before exams, you shouldn't have too much of a problem getting an A.
Lectures are not super interesting, but not terrible. He tries to make it interesting with jokes and demonstrations. Really not a very hard class. Gives practice exams that are almost exactly like the tests. Try, and you will get above a B.
Great teacher! Helpful and attractive!!!
Tim Cullinan is a good professor and a good man. While MATE273 is really not that interesting, and usually not that challenging, he does his best to make the class bearable. Not that it's possible at all times, but he does care about the topics and sets very clear criteria for success. There's plenty of extra credit on exams too, so don't panic.
He is a great guy and a good professor. The topics you cover can get boring at times but he honestly makes it as interesting as possible. The demos are fantastic. All the material you need to know is given in lecture, but the review sessions are also very helpful. Overall not a very difficult class if you attend lecture and put in the work.
A great class with interesting demos
Is not very informative during lectures, assumes that the student knows everything and lectures are more like review sessions.
Cullinan is not a prof I would take again. He tries to make the lectures interesting but goes a little to far and things become distracting. Just find someone to do homework and study with and you'll be fine though.
Makes MAT E very interesting and cool. Heavy focus on Aerospace applications. Tough online homework but the answers are in that days lecture notes.
Cullinan is very knowledgeable about materials science and this makes it a lot easier to learn from him. Even if he doesn't cover a certain topic during the lecture, it might still come up on the homework. Despite this, everything you will ever need to know will be hidden in the lecture notes somewhere.
The exam and quiz questions are always vague, not sure what he wants in particular.
READ THE BOOK. Homework comes from lecture slides and book. Testing center for tests, do the practice problems he gives you as you go through each lecture with redoing the homework and reading the lecture slides and you WILL get good grades on the tests. 1st testeasy(get the highest you can), 2ndhard, lastnotsobad. follow these rulesgood grade
Hes a good lecturer while you are in class and keeps it relatively interesting. However, very rarely does his information actually transfer over to assignments. Tests are way harder than you expect from his reviews as well. They are now night exams and no longer at testing centers. Doesn't ever actually do calculations during class either.
Decent professor, always enjoy the labs, tough grader, but tells you pretty much exactly what he wants. USE THE NOTES SHEET WELL for tests and quizzes. Labs are very interesting and talking about playing with 1/4 to 1/2 million dollar equipment is a great conversation starter. No textbook.
Excellent person, decent teacher. Cullinan is an incredibly tough grader in all aspects of the class. The exams are more of a test of how well you can create a cheat sheet than a true test of knowledge. Be careful going to in depth on short answer questions in his class. unless you word things exactly as Tim wants them you will lose many points.
Good guy but no textbook and very little outside resources for the class. Tests are based completely on lectures and a little lab work. Can be difficult to get to him during his 2 office hours a week to ask him questions, decent at emailing you back though. Doesn't utilize lab much, most days lab is cancelled. Fun teacher, difficult class.
Tim is the best professor I've had at Iowa State. His lectures are very valuable and relevant to the content you're being tested on. If you do the quizzes and don't cheat on them you should be fine. The tests are very hard but if you put in the work you should be able to get a good grade. He knows his content well and is very helpful.
I Really like Tim as a person, but there are a few things about the class that make it difficult. He spends a decent amount of time on tangents that are not tested on, and there is a very large amount of material on the lecture slides. Pretty difficult exams, but doable if you spend the time to take good notes on ALL of the lectures (outside class)
Homework was easy enough to get a good grade but challenging enough to reinforce concepts. Lecture was fun and engaging. Grading was more than fair. Extra credit was given generously. Great course
Dude seems super chill, but don't let him fool you. His exams are pretty hard and he gives you next to nothing to prepare for them. Homework wasn't too hard. Unfortunately, he is the only professor that teaches this class. He is very passionate about his work, I'll give him that. Exams are 75% of your grade so do good.
While the course material itself was interesting, Tim made it almost impossible to get a good grade in this course. He provided little to no test prep, and very easily could have provided more but refused. The tests are each 35 questions but out of 30, but THEY ARE DIFFICULT. If I had a different prof I guarantee that I would've done better.
Had to go to class for tophat and there were quizzes after most lectures. He made the class very easy to get an A. I did not like his lecture style. He went through so many slides and a lot of it was unnecessary. He tried to entertain the class too much with weird facts when he should really consolidate the material to half the number of slides
Tim is super passionate about his material but this causes him to lecture on things he finds interesting that aren't relevant to the information we need to know. His tests get progressively harder as the semester goes on but they aren't too bad. Has Tophat for accuracy so you have to go to class to get those points. Posts all his lectures online
He puts an entire textbook on every slide and cruises thru around 40 slides each lecture. Impossible to take notes. Cant reach outside of class b/c he always cancels office hours. Tests are just memorizing random facts
Tim loves what he does and is super smart but his exams are ungodly difficult. Lectures are 5% math based, exams are 95% math based. Lectures are super interesting and the Top Hat is super easy. 3 exams, third one doubles as the final. The only HW is daily quizzes on Canvas. I'd advise to study the math on the quizzes to prep for exams. Good luck!
Great lecturer. My only complaint is that sometimes it is hard to know what material covered in lectures is actually going to be tested
This class is difficult. The 3 exams cover lots of material, and could include random questions that we discusses only once. Quizzes every day that aren't too difficult. The textbook is not necessary but it helps sooo muchhh to read. His lectures are difficult to listen to because its all hard stuff but he does interesting experiments!
His lectures are pointless. His classes are a waste because he talks about real world examples for 80% of the time, and when it comes to the exam, you're completely unprepared. His exams will be the complete opposite of the one practice exam he gives, which he only started doing because he failed so many students the semester before.
I find his lectures refreshing, He doesn't throw formulas at us and expect us to know what its practical purpose is, he explains the concept and shows how to find it, than shows how it applies to our career, That seems to be lacking in most courses. He is helpful outside of class plus the exam is basically the same thing as the practice one.
Biggest tool I've ever met, cares way too much about students opinions of him and acts like he's still an undergrad. Class isn't that hard. Just grind 2-3 days before the tests and you'll be fine. The lab is super easy but the homework difficulty varies between slightly difficult and insanely time consuming.
Rarely finishes lectures. Tim releases homework as canvas quizzes after each lecture and gives you a week to do that. Of course, since he didn't finish the lecture, you don't know how to do the material on the homework, so the next lecture, he rushes through the hard stuff to catch up to where he wants to be. Find some friends in the class to pass.
My advice for 214 with Cullinan is to pay very close attention to lectures. He posts his own slides online, but they are not enough to study if you didn't understand the material the first time. Go to his office hours as soon as you can if you didn't get something. Also, try to do your homework early you will need the time.
Tim is almost weirdly passionate about materials science. Tough class but a good guy. Very clear grading criteria with extra credit opportunities. Top hat in class
Tim is an excellent choice for anyone taking a materials class. He is clear on what is being asked and gives you everything you need to know in the lecture slides. Homework is not hard, tests are just homework questions, and each test has a built-in curve. On top of that, he offers easy extra credit that you should take advantage of.
Take advantage of the exam review sessions! Don't skip lecture, the demonstrations help you understand the material. Go to office hours or the help desk if you become confused.
It's hard to figure out how to study for this class. Powerpoint slides and quiz questions will cover the entirety of the exams. I think Tim is great at teaching but needs to work on clarity. The biggest struggle was finding answers to quiz Qs and figuring out what to study from Tim's massive pwrpoint slides. Don't get lazy and you can get an A.
Dr. Cullinan is an excellent communicator, and he goes to great lengths to make his lectures interesting and to make very clear the major concepts that must be understood for the exams. If you come to class, do your homework, take advantage of abundant extra credit, and ask frequent questions, you'll have a great time and learn a lot.
Tim is a very interesting lecturer in a non very interesting subject for me. He kept my attention throughout the semester and made lectures interesting. The worst part about the class were the quizzes that you get as homework for every lecture.
Material heavy class with tests requiring effort. Study the powerpoints and sit through class and the tests are manageable. Extra Credit is offered and it helps with some quizzes you may have done poorly on throughout the semester. The grading criteria is clear from the beginning of the semester and the class will most likely not be curved.
The MAT E 273 class itself provides you a lot of opportunities to succeed and get an A. Dr. Culinary himself is a great professor and does his best to make the high amounts of content in each lecture as interesting as possible. Was definitely the class I would look forward to most.
He's a likable guy and is clearly very interested in the material (heh, pun). However, he's very lecture-heavy. He has great and informative lectures, however, the notes he posts are atrocious for the purpose of self-learning. It's very difficult to learn the stuff on your own because they're so overwhelming. Easiest to just attend the lectures.
Dr. Cullinan is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and that goes a long way. The lectures are very thorough and available as a resource for doing the homework after each class. He grades exams pretty generously and offers opportunities to make up missed homework. I can't complain besides the convoluted exam seating but that's pretty minor.
To be fair, he has a very good understanding of the subject, but in my opinion he failed to deliver that understanding to the student. Along with that, the structure of this course is very tight which means if you did badly in one exam, you're lost! The most highlighted problem in this course is that it only is given by one instructor - terrible
Dr. Cullinan is very engaging in class, which in turn keeps you focused during lecture. He clearly tries a lot to make you laugh and helps keep the lectures light, but he also goes extremely fast and you absolutely have to go to class to understand the content on his slides. Do the quizzes by yourself, read the book, and study lots for the exams!
He is very knowledgeable of what he is teaching, but a little too much. He constantly goes on tangents that are rather irrelevant to tested material. He will acknowledge that we don't need to know it and then explain it more in depth. Never receive your old tests back to know how you did on specific questions.
He doesn't prepare you for the tests since his practice tests are easier than the test. The lectures contain A LOT of information that is both relevant and irrelevant to what you need to know. Also, the lectures provide barely any example problems to relate to the homework, which are Canvas quizzes. Overall, it's more difficult than it needs to be!
The best way to prepare for exams are by redoing all the quizzes. Second best thing is to read the chapter summaries in the book, as it also explains all the equations. He includes memes in lectures, and is a wholesome guy in general. Overall would recommend.
So, Tim is a terrible Professor. He never answers my question well. Very vague answers. Exams are extremely hard and are worth 85 percent of your grade. His lectures are below because half the time the lecture is not on the exam. You need to find need to be an expert to get an A. I studied too much, and got nothing from this.
Tim's ego only grew more as the semester progressed. The mode grade of the class was a 74 and the average around there too. His lectures were ultra boring and he usually used them to flex about his research. He tries to be funny in lectures... but he's not. For online classes, I highly don't recommend him.
TIm is just a bad lazy teacher. He does not give your exams back., so you don't know what you did wrong. He does not answer your questions great. He is very vague. Exams are 85% of the grade. The tests are very hard, and his lectures do not prepare you. He is a very lazy professor when it comes to helping you. Bad arrogant teacher. Just the worst.
Not much material at lecture and lecture pdf. Exam comes from stuff that's not listed on the lecture pdf. grading criteria is clear. 1st exam is easiest. should get good on first exam.
This course is essentially a trivia game. You can only see the test questions one at a time and there is no going back. Don't ever think about making a human mistake in this class. Ever. Also if you happened to come across the ISUbarstool post on Sept. 21 the email is an accurate representation.
It appears his only focus is making the course impossible to cheat on, which he did, but he also made it impossible to learn. The the three exams are purely trivia contests and make up 85% of the grade. Once you submit an answer you never see the question again. He doesn't even give multiple choice question answers back.
The lectures & quizzes given aren't bad. Making the exams more conceptual-based is logical, but not being able to go back to past questions is unfair. Compares exams to FE but only about not returning them. The syllabus says you can use lecture slides on exams, but white words are riddled throughout, so you can't ctrl+f when in a crunch.
The lectures were very good. You need to be sure to know specifics for the exams though. If you take good notes and understand the math you'll do fine. Just pay attention to the lecture and give some effort to understanding. Good note taking is essential to this class.
Pathetic being of a "professor." I'm sure he knows a lot about MATE but he knows jack sh!t about how to run a class. The pathetic being who posted before me who received an A likely cheated on all the exams and everything he said was a lie. The lectures sucked a$$. I got a B, but I managed to get an A in engineering mechanics and dynamics. SMFH
Good luck in this class. Dr. Cullinan makes this class way harder than it needs to be. The lecture slides are super confusing so if you miss a class, good luck trying to learn that topic. He also says "your welcome" for not making us learn some super hard thing that no one gets during the lectures. Also the tests are nothing like the practice.
He has way too much information that he spews during lecture/on his slides, so knowing whats important and whats not is tough to figure out. Theres so much fat that can be trimmed and so much simplification needs to be done to his slides. Its completely oversaturated w unnecessary (but interesting) info. Missing class will leave you far behind.
He lectures fast; you must take notes to stay engaged. Slides are packed with info and if you don't go to class you won't know what it means. Only curve was built into tests. Do not fall behind on Quiz/HW. He answers questions all times of day, and QUICKLY! Answered my questions at least 3 times out of class. Tests are scantron. Nice guy, but no BS
Lectures so fast it is nearly impossible to take notes, but slides are posted so it isn't that big of an issue. Provides many resources for tests and answers questions fast. Exams are straightforward and simple, also include a curve.
Turbo... This class was very interesting and can be scary at first. Work hard by doing the quizzes right after the lecture, go to office hours, and really learn the material! The exams can be tricky, but if you do the quizzes yourself and spend 7-9 hours a week on the class, you will pass with a good grade. The "curve" isn't really a curve IMO.
I have to admit he lives up to the title Turbo Tim. He lectures fast, and you have to be on top of taking the important notes. Exams are out of 110%, three quizzes a week with 3 attempts, online. All exams are multiple choice, so no partial credit. He is engaging and encourages questions in lecture. The math can be hard, as it is not covered well.
Turbo Tim is an intelligent man and seems to know a good amount about materials engineering, but he is not a great teacher. His lectures go so fast that its impossible to take notes along with him. To do well in this course it must be your top priority. Visit the TAs often and don't save the quizzes till last minute. Take this class elsewhere.
Dr. Cullinan is an absolute power trip and has no business being a professor. He continually makes bad jokes while he is lecturing in hopes of a reaction from the 400 students in the lecture hall, then proceeds to send out nasty emails full of threats about the course curriculum changing due to students disrupting his class.
MatE 273 can be challenging--there's a lot of chemistry, which many students have probably forgotten. Dr. Cullinan was always very accessible and friendly outside of class. Tests were rigid, mostly because of class size. Changed my major to MatE because of this class. TA'd for 273 the following year. Great teacher, tough (but fascinating) course.
With Mat E 273 being a required course for almost all engineering disciplines to graduate, and not being a prereq for basically any classes, it has no business being this hard. The exams are practically a guessing game, you get tested on the most obscure, oddly specific facts. He makes the class very hard, and seemingly wants students to fail.
Tim is very arrogant and narcissistic. In my opinion, he does not care about us as humans. He gives a study guide, but no answers to check yourself. He gives practice exams but no explanations. His lectures are hard to follow and he goes off on tangents & boasts about himself. I think he sucks as a teacher and a person
Tim has to the be the worst professor Iowa state has seen in a while. I refuse to call him doctor because he does not deserve that level of respect. It is actually an insult to other doctors to consider Mr. Cullinan in that crowd. He makes a class (that non material engineerings should have to take) extremely difficult. I will be lucky if I pass.
Tim does not care about his students at all. He canceled five lectures and makes the students make up the work independently. He also threatened us with fewer attempts on daily quizzes because of a few students out of hundreds. He should just talk to those students individually instead of messing with everyone else's grades.
Materials is a very interesting subject with great engineering applications, but Turbo Tim makes a general engineering class very hard. Going to the lectures is the only way to learn the material, and the slides make no sense without the commentary. The math is annoyingly hard as it is not covered well at all, and you don't get tests back.
The class is structured horribly. For studying you get an easy practice exam which is nothing like the actual exam, 15 lecture slides, and 15 quizzes all of which are very difficult without the help of the TA's. To get a good grade go to help hours and meet with the TA's. Honestly just get through the class are never look back at it. GARBAGE CLASS!
The learning environment Tim Culling created was horrific. I never felt like my questions would be answered without being scrutinized at the same time. There was too much lecture material to comprehend in every lecture, and it also seemed he got off on students not understanding. YOU ALSO DON'T GET TO SEE YOUR TESTS AFTER TAKING THEM! BOO TIM
I had to take this class twice & Tim is by far the worst prof ISU has to offer. Lectures are far too complicated than necessary and a horrible job is done to help students throughout the course. Doesn't give back exams because, "Exams aren't a learning opportunity." Be aware, appears nice and friendly until the first exam, then turns hostile.
I wish there was another professor for MAT E 273. Turbo Tim has a tendency to go fast, and he throws in a lot of unnecessary side information so it is hard to know what you will actually be tested on. Slides are also overly complicated and indecipherable outside of class. The class curriculum has potential to be good, but Tim makes it pointless.
Daily quizzes are about 5 questions with 10 parts to them consisting of selecting all that apply from a selection of typically 7. Sent out an 8000-character email to everyone threatening to lower the grades of everyone due to 5/300 kids talking. Teaches this class as if we are all Ph.D. students. Can't get anyone else he's the only teacher for this
He always went way over time during lectures. He wouldn't let us see any of our exams or even meet with him to discuss them. He repeatedly threatened to get rid of the grade curve because 3 or 4 our of 200+ students would talk during lectures.
I took MATE 273 with Turbo Tim. This class is extremely difficult and covers a bunch of content. What I like most about Tim is the insight that he gives into the industry. Pointing out things that he has personally used in his experience working. Yes the clas is hard but don't put all of the blame on Tim.
3 Quizzes a week. 1 after every lecture. Exams are ridiculously hard, can't just study lecture slides.
After the first exam he told us "if you didn't get over an 80%, you are at risk of not passing." that's super unhelpful and it's also a discouraging thing to tell your students. I also tried to go to his office hours and he never showed up even after I emailed him. Also doesn't give exams back or post answers so you have no idea what you did wrong.
The instructor himself wasn't all that bad. He seemed interested and engaged in what he was teaching, just taught it poorly. I enjoyed having him but he got into information useless to the class often. It was nice getting an insight into the field, but made it difficult to study for/take the exams since you don't know what was and was not useful.
Lectures slides heavy with information and quizzes after every lecture. No curve anymore. Teaches the class as if everyone has been in the field for 5+ years.
Tim is awesome. He is a great guy and he really cares about the material (wink wink).
He has expectations that students will take time to understand the content. Considering the difficulty and large amount of content, this is not unreasonable. Taking time to understand the content makes the class very easy. No homework, only quizzes with 3 attempts which are easy to get 100% on if you attend class and pay attention. Funny guy too.
Very well-respected materials scientist; cares very much about the education of new engineering students in MAT E 273. Enjoyed the class, was straightforward, and 10 points of extra credit on each exam.
Really good lecturer who lets his ego get in the way of a truly great class experience. Well structured course.
He goes fast in his lectures. He's very knowledgeable in the field, but his ego gets in the way. Not really there in his office hours. The lecture slides have a lot of content that isn't important, but gives good insight into the industry. Better suited for grad level courses I feel.
A decent professor often wastes time during lectures due to random rambles. Super test dependent, and there are too many lecture slides to study.
This class with Dr. Cullinan was one of my favorite classes ever as a mechanical engineering student. I learned A LOT from his lectures. The "quizzes" that were really homework assignments were not bad, the exams were similar to the quizzes, and the TA office hours were very helpful and offered multiple times each day of the week.
Professor was extremely disrespectful to students regularly and created a very hostile environment. Did not make lectures particularly effective. Exams were almost the entire grade of the course and they were unforgiving.
This class with Dr. Cullinan was a mixed bag. While he's knowledgeable, his teaching style can be hit-or-miss. The quizzes and exams were challenging, but using unstuck study and the free textbook helped me stay on top of the material.
The name of Turbo-Tim lives up. He talks fast and has some of the most content full lectures of any class I've taken. Minimal outside of class work if you go to class and pay attention. Very interesting and I really enjoyed the class
