I have never came across such an unprofessional and unorganized professor as Tim Fowler. His expectations are never made clear and he takes off marks because we did not do as he expected. I have never received such horrible marks without an explanation and questions we asked were met with condescending answers. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM

It is clear from the student reviews from not only McMaster, but Ryerson and Brock that Tim Fowler is not meant to be a professor. If you want to do well, you need to make sure that you can read his mind for the EXACT answer. Yes, research methods is subjective, but he is still expecting only ONE specific answer. If you do not get it, you fail. GL.

There is a reason why people say he is the worst professor they had. He talks too fast and doesn't post lecture slides, making it impossible to get a good grasp of the course. Tim Fowler is the worst instructor I've had at Mac. He is extremely rude and condescending when you ask him anything. His grading is unreasonably harsh and his grading criteria is so unclear... you'll basically have to be able to read his mind if you want a decent grade. Seriously, avoid him at all costs!!!

Everything said about this professor is true. I wish I never had to take this course because of the professor. Everything was so unfair, never responded to emails and was so rude to students he also would not take anything into consideration. I am surprised I was able to pass the class even when I tried my hardest.

I watched every single lecture and my notes were also very detailed and easy to understand, making studying much easier, but quizzes and exams were lengthy and hard to understand. Assignments don't have rubrics and are very easy to get low grades on. He is not accommodating at all, especially during a global pandemic.

Professor Fowler does not grant extensions to anyone for any reason even if it is something as serious as a death in the family. During a global pandemic, he has been the most inconsiderate professor I have ever had. He is a really strict marker and makes his assignments/quizzes very difficult. His exam are really long and cant be finished on time.

Fowler inspired me to never want to see his face again. Im convinced all the good reviews have been written by Tim himself. Please listen to the bad reviews and avoid this course, dont let the good reviews fool ya. Nobody is bitter about their grade, we are bitter about our experience with this MANDATORY course. Tim Fowler was previously reported to the Labour Studies faculty because of his poor behaviour and teaching abilities, and yet he is still at McMaster? This guy is the only prof that has given me a 'C+' on my 'A-' and above transcript. I can see that the positive and average reviews are done by him/his TAs which is REALLY sad. Please just quit.

Of all the professors Ive ever had Dr. Fowler is by far the worst one. His teaching is awful as he doesnt go into depth through his lectures and talks way too fast. With all due respect, I am not fond of this lecturer! He was not at all accommodating in the face of COVID-19 nor the sudden death in my immediate family this semester. I almost failed after I misunderstood an assignments requirements, but he would not allow me to redo it or give extra credit work even after explaining why his wording confused me.

Tim Fowler was perhaps one of the most unaccommodating and disrespectful professors I have had at McMaster to date. He is your typical "call me Dr." instead of "Professor" elitist who truly treats students as if they are below him. He has no sympathy or empathy regardless of the situation. Horrible! Just Horrible. I have never struggled so much in a class. Even with the COVID-19 pandemic he was not accommodating, he was rude and does not care about his students. Quizzes were horrible and the final exam was even worse. If you ever get Dr. Fowler on your schedule drop the course, its not worth it.

He's very strict and doesn't believe in student accomodations even in a global pandemic, and I'm referencing the semester it started in 2020. I have no idea how this "man" is still employed at the University considering he has no real care for his students and for our research paper, even my TA said his 2nd year expectations were unreasonable.

He teaches in a repressive and oppressive way, I felt completely dehumanized in my experience with him. He makes it very clear he doesn't and refuses to care for students - he shows no effort at providing accommodations. He revels in the authority he has over his students as a professor more than ensure students are adequately learning the material

Few assignments, so they are more important, and very few grading criteria are given to students, with very specific expectations.

It is seriously as if he hates teaching. His lectures consist of him rambling for extended periods of time - often making the lecture about 25 minutes longer than they need to be. Dr. Fowler might be the worst teacher I have ever had. It is rare that any of his students have anything nice to say about him at all given that his content is so heavily biased towards the left of the political spectrum and given that he is wildly arrogant at times. Sent passive-aggressive emails that weren't helpful. Lectures lacked engagement and originality, making them uninteresting. It was his way or no way, with no room for discussion. Withheld assignment rubrics, making it challenging to grasp expectations, which led to lower grades for many. Overall, it was not a great experience.

Absolutely terrible. This guy has some sort of authority kink. Extremely passive aggressive if you disagree with his opinions, zero lack of empathy in email responses. Definition of middle aged guy who has nothing better to do than make students lives miserable. The university seriously needs to reconsider employing this guy.

DON'T take his class, He's extremely passive-aggressive and condescending when he speaks and when responding to emails. He treats you like you're worthless. Lectures are unimaginably boring, attendance and participation is mandatory and worth a huge portion of your grade. He grades assignments way too harshly for a professor of a 1st year course.

honestly the most god awful professor I've ever had. I had professors who are hard markers but he is horrible. Makes you participate in discussion forums only to give you a poor mark without any feedback. aid a lot of things that made me raise an eyebrow throughout the course. Accused me of AI when I didn't use it because it was a discussion post.

His grading is unnecessarily tough. The lectures are fine but kind of boring. Doesn't give good feedback or even at all. Easy to access via email. I would take 2NN3 in the fall with Dr. Alway.

Lectures were long and felt more like rambles. He can outline what he wants, but the marking scheme is very TA-dependent, I would say. The textbook was a waste of money. Quizzes were hard because he made us write them after covering completely new material in lecture, giving us only 30 minutes. If you have SAS, use it as much as you can with him.

Lectures felt long and doesnt post powerpoints or any lecture material. Also does not have much importanat content in the powerpoints he puts in the lectures and you have to write down everything he is saying which is impossible to do. He doesn't talk about the midterm or final exam and you would have no idea what he'll put on the exam.

This was the worst class I have ever taken & possibly the worst class I will ever take. The content is actually interesting but the prof makes it unbearable. The class average is ridiculously low because of how the prof structured the class & how he teaches. it sucks because this is a mandatory class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!

If professor fowler is reading this, You get your ego in the way of teaching. It's so easy to teach a class where students want to learn and want to be around you, but instead you ramble on about personal issues and don't respond to student concerns. All you needed to do was help when we were confused and your rating wouldn't be 1.8.

2NN3 is a lecture-heavy course, which isn't necessarily bad, but the textbook includes too much content unrelated to evaluations. Tests are highly application-based, yet the necessary skills aren't clearly taught, and the tutorial team feels disconnected from both lectures and the textbook. Feedback from teaching team is not particularly helpful.

Never take this course with him, even if its the only one available just take it later I PROMISE. Doesn't post slides while its a 2 hour class starting at 7 as if people dont have a life? Then makes it incredibly hard to even do well on assessments. He will make u memorize 50 key terms and then put the ones he barely explained in the assessments.

worst 12 weeks of my life.

The tutorials for this class is 9-10 PM I commute 1 hour and couldn't make it ONE DAY because my car broke down. I had to email HIM not my TA about missing the tutorial and if theres another way i can get participation marks. He straight up told me “its a reasonable expectation that you can attend a class” like what? Get off your high horse.

He definitely does not like to teach. It is partly on my to receive a bad grade of course but as a first year be clear of what you want us to do (especially for tests). Every time I tell my friends he does not share his slides because of "copyright" they have the same reaction, this is an odd excuse. I also sensed arrogance all the time.

Don't want to post the slides? Understandable. Don't reply to emails? We all have personal lives. But you don't post clear criteria for large assignments/assessments, that's a teaching flaw. You cannot expect students to succeed when they are not aware of what they need to do in order to succeed. Spent 5 months listening to you talk, not learning.

The most unlikeable professor I have ever encountered. The course material is not challenging at all but he makes it convoluted, unnecessarily (and incorrectly) objective, and is unapproachable, demeaning, and honestly just uncomfortable to be around when you ask for any clarification. I have straight As but will probably get a C in 2NN3.

Studying for the final right now, its not worth it bro.. even if i do ok on the final ill still get a C. He doesn't give out 80s so get ready for a 70. I missed two days of a tutorial even though every time i would go i was 1 of 3 that would participate (i would answer multiple times to 1 question). and he gave me a 60 for participation.

He thinks talking, and making 3 word statements for definitions is teaching. You wont learn anything in this class, the way his lecture works is based on memorization. Literally expects us to memorizes 50 key concepts and be able to write about them in paragraph form. When he doesn't even give enough information to do that.. (or gives to much)

absolute trash. does not allow for any outside learning. you have to take full notes in his 2 hour lectures every time as that is the only learning he will provide you. his key terms are so broad and bad. exams are difficult and grading wise is not proportionate to what you have written. essays are not as bad

He doesn't share slides claiming "it's my property". He caps participation at 80% no matter how much you participate. You have 2 papers. The paper questions are found at the end of every lecture which you have to sign into to get the question otherwise it's a 0. Basically you don't go to lecture, you will fail. He doesn't respond to emails.

For the love of all that is good in this world, save yourself, drop the course, and just take it with Todd Alway. this guy makes the course unnecessarily difficult and has a world class ego. Just don't do it, please. this guy is a narcissist and a real life supervillain.

Man, where do I even begin? Professor Fowler is one of the most challenging professors I've had at McMaster University. After taking 2M03 and 2NN3, I can say you can't escape him in Polisci. His courses pushed me to rethink law, my place at Mac, and reminded me that grades don't define my worth.

If you can, avoid taking classes with him. I have never had a B on my transcript and I have taken much harder courses. He's very particular about all the wrong things and vague about things that matter. Condescending, does not carry his students along in class. I clutched an A in the final somehow but don't do it please.

do yourself a favour and swap to the other class. no matter if you show up to tutorials and put the effort and work in, he gives unfairly low grades. his reasoning for giving these low grades is wrapped in a condescending email. if you are stuck with him, make sure to use his examples on tests for the full marks- even though this is never outlined.
