Boring teacher. Didn't learn anything and inconsistent marker. Unorganized.
Excellent professor; I enjoyed his style and the class discussions

Tim is one of the best. He helps contribute a good atmosphere. Made my english class enjoyable.
This was my last course before I went to SFU. I thought it would prepare me to writing papers. But it didn't. I really needed more feedback from Tim on my work. We handed in weekly assignments which he didn't mark, how helpful is that?
Tim is a sweetie. Really flighty though, and unorganized. Class discussion is usually really good though.
His marking is unbelievablly stupid, he is a hardcore marker....its a 1st english course yet he marks like we are supposed to be in 4th year? Compared to other english profs AVOID him your GPA will be higher in another english course.
Topics on exam same as those covered in class. He is a difficult marker, but what english teacher isn't
He is one of the best! You really learn a lot from him.

Tim is a very kind person, but as a helpful English teacher, I have to say I've had better. He does expect quite a lot from 100-level students and I do agree that he is biased on a lot of topics. Not a horrible teacher, but his marking is inconsistent.
Tim is an okay teacher. He is a nice guy but he needs to improve on his teaching skills. He is not very confident in front of the class and sometimes has a hard time controlling the class discussion when it gets completely off track.
I liked him at first but agree with most people that he seems often unconfident in front of the class and doesn't always explain things very well. This is especially true with his marking scheme which i could not comprehend for the life of me.
I liked Tim alot and so I don't understand these other reviews. He is very friendly and helpful, he chooses good reading material, encourages class participation, and explains things well. Ps. All 1st year english proffesors mark hard.
eng 105 is SUPPOSED to be brutal, the prof is not there to care about our clever ideas, he/she is there to prepare us for all our future writing. yes i lost marks for putting a period in the wrong spot in a reference, but that's the point. I found his class engaging.
This guy is really nice, but doesn't have a clue what he wants to say. An English professor should not use the word "uh" so many times as this guy. He doesn't have a clue.
This class was boring but what do you espect its english however Tim was soo uncmfortabel teaching in fromt of the class hes says ummmm alot and mumbles, he's not a good enlish teacher at all. However nice guy
came across as very unconfident, said um alot & didnt have a response when someone said something critical;almost looked scared cuz he knew he had nothing to say back to the student.lectures sound like he got his notes from sparknotes.worst engclass ever & im an eng maj and ive had a class w/ miriam
Worst professor I've ever had. Unclear, uncomfortable and generally without a clue as to how to teach. Acts like he'd rather be facilitating a self-help group.
he's always make the class interesting. But he's such a hard marker. beside english, he's bad at everything else
Don't take this class if you don't like HORROR!! That's all this prof is interested in, and it frieked me right out! It's all about vampires and ghosts, and anything absurd or weird. It's creepy!
Great Eng. teacher! Super nice

He is definately great teacher. I found what he is focusing is to extend the horizon of thinking and to nurture the capacity of appreciating literature itself from academic point of view. Those are really important for students in art major. Do not listen to people who does not like him. They do not even know what is important for themselves.
I've been told he's a tough marker, but I did fine; the quizzes were only hard if you hadn't read it. The class discussions were awesome and we got really in-depth with the topic. He helps cultivate a love of the literature looked at. The one short coming was that the classes were too short to fit enough discussion, but Tim seems to like to talk.
He's a nice guy, but he gets a bit nervous when he teaches, which can make him hard to follow. Honestly, I don't think I learned anything in his course...I'm not sure if it was the subject or if it was him...I do think he had trouble clarifying his expectations on assignments, however.
Tim's an interesting professor, at the very least. He definitely has an interest in what he teaches, and as a result he contributes alot of energy to the class atmosphere. He tends to get excited about something, and talk until he realizes he's beginning to stray off topic. He's also quite open and eager for discussion of ideas. I'd recommend him.
If you ask me about this teacher and how was his class, I would say that if you want to get a good mark, I am strongly suggesting you stay away from him. The average mark I got from him is C-. I know some of my friends in other ENGL classes, who have lower study quality than me, but still got way more better mark than me. Poor me!!!
Honestly his class was a joke! Not easy, but as in I couldt not believe this guy was a professer. I take classes fairly seriously, but no this guy. Really nice guy but I kept asking myself why I showed up for class. He's entertaining to say the least...
Down to Earth, friendly, funny.
I can understand how students wouldn't like Tim in a class like eng 105, but for the class I had with him, he was great. He is very helpful, nice, funny, and really knows what he is talking about without being condescending. The only problem is that his directions for disscussions and assignments can be confusing, but that is mostly funny.
he's a good teacher. classes are actually fun to attend. he seems really easy-going, but he marks a bit tougher...but fair. i learned a lot and enjoyed it...i would take courses with him again. he does say um sometimes but he is pretty organized with notes and lectures...and the stories he chose for us to read are good. very interesting discussion
Tim was a great prof. I could understand why students wouldn't like him for 105 because, lets face it, 105 sucks. He is funny, engaging, and passionate about his class. He's a fair marker but you have to write very well to get a good grade. I would suggest going to the writing centre for help prior to handing in your paper. Overall, he's good!
Tim marks WHAT you say far more than HOW you say it, which is RIDICULOUS if you ask me! BTW don't bash religion in ur paper if you want a decent mark, Tim is very bias in his marking when it comes to religion, writing a paragraph on my paper on how i was completely wrong that religion is a major cause of war, could not give me a reason y i got a C
Often his sentences are not complete, which is really frustrating. He does not really help with assignment. It is hard to get a good grade. Not very interesting.
Tim means well and knows his stuff, but he's very scatterbrained and has a tendency to change instructions for inclass activities after everyone's started doing the activity, which is really frustrating.
A Great Proff! Extreamly nice and understanding. Sometimes scatter-brained but my fav prof yet!!
Need to backup what you write about or poor marks will follow. In class group activities were not helpful. Cant answer questions right away. Scatter brained. Nice person. Hard marker.
He is my favourite English teacher I've ever had. He has trouble stopping talking especially when giving instructions and quite scatter-brained. Overall he is interesting and I actually enjoyed going to class. He is open to everyone's ideas which is hard to come by in an English teacher, and he isn't that tough of a marker.
Over-all: meh. VERY HARD MARKER. He likes you to write about what HE likes and understands. Scatter-brained. But quite nice :)
Tim's Gothic Lit class was amazing. He is a great enabler and guide for those who want to put the time and effort into their work. Though vague at times, he stimulates class discussion and is available to talk when you need him. This seems to make up for unclear instructions. Expect a B in this class if you put in a responsible effort.
Tim is quite the eccentric teacher. He is all over the place and you are never sure what exactly he is thinking. You find out quickly he marks extremely hard for a 100 level class and didn't give out an A on any assignment to any student the whole semester, avoid taking his ENG 105 class.
Never ever take this instucter :(
Great teacher. He makes what would be a normally boring class actually enjoyable. Very helpful teacher for becoming a better writer.
The class was not that interesting but that was partially due to the content. Tim can be long winded and get off track easily, but overall nice.
To be honest, he marks really hard. The content itself is easy but difficult to understand and actually learn the material due to lack of ability to explain clearly. Lack of teaching skills compared to other instructors. He's all over the place when he talks and it's not even enjoyable. I didn't find any of his material helpful.
Tim was great. He did mark very hard but did offer explanations for marks so it was possible to learn from mistakes. Content was interesting. I am a better writer after taking his course however I am used to higher grades for my diligent hard work.
Tim is awesome! He gets off track so easily but he gets back on it. He is kooky and funny and that engages the whole class, I actually want to come to class because it is interesting and he makes it all the better. He is a hard marker though, very specific. Definitely worth taking a class with him.
Terrible teaching skills. Most of the class would have a confused look on their faces, even after 20 min into his lectures about our assignments. People would have to ask "what exactly are we doing?" He doesn't explain anything clearly, and if he does it's basic and not exactly useful for the graded material. And then he grades so hard! Terrible.
Eng 105 is fairly difficult to start with, Tim was very confusing and didn't overly seem to understand what he was doing half the time. However, if you can prove he marked you incorrectly, he will bump up your grade, which is actually a bad thing. He gave two students from the same group different grades for the same assignment. Don't take for 105!
I absolutely love English and was very excited for the course...but Tim Haner completely ruined it for me. Half the time it seemed as though he didnt understand the material himself, and relied on the class to fill awkward silences. Also, he doesnt give any basis for the grades he gives, and is unwilling to answer most questions you may have.
Horrible teacher do not take his class. Talked mostly about nonsense with other students which took up valuable class time in the short amount of class time there is. I even had to finish a quiz in four minutes.
This was my First course in University and i was terrified because no matter how your try in this course nothing makes sense. Very hard marker for reasons i dont even know.
Worst teacher ever! if you have him switch out. there no point in even trying or asking for help.
Probably one of the worst english profs at UFV. Speaking as a good english student, his classes were torture. He is very confusing as he often contradicts himself during his lessons. Relies to heavily on partner work instead of teaching the proper material. Avoid at all costs.
This was my second english class that I took in my first year of university and all I have to say is avoid this teacher at all costs. His teaching style is quite scattered in the means in which he wants everything his way and is always unclear when it comes to answering students questions. He marks tough on papers which ment you will get a C mostly
Great person, can't get his thoughts together sometimes. Hard marker but lets you redo assignments and pushes you to succeed to your abilities. He knows right away what you can and can't do
Tim is a really great guy, but his lectures can be confusing at times... His train of thought gets lost, and he goes on tangents quite a bit. His course work is pretty easy though, and if you do the work and take whatever notes you can, you'll do great. No mid-term, and the assignments are few, and very easy.
I just took Tim this past semester and before I registered I researched him on this site. I was a little apprehensive on taking him because everyone was saying how hard of a marker he is; however, I didn't get anything lower than an A on any paper! Just follow all the notes he makes on your rough drafts and you'll be fine!
hard marker, would never take it again.
Marks very hard, would not recommend him to anyone
Tim, is a tough grader. he is a bit confusing and gets really carried away a lot. he seems unsure many a times. nice person but a confused soul
Fun class! Fun Prof! He just likes talking about the texts in class so do the readings!
Took him for the second time and I must say my opinion has not changed. He is a great professor, I am not sure why so many people on here are so confused by his assignments. He is very clear as to what he wants and gives great feedback on your papers. Get ready for lots of partner work though...
Great class, very interesting points of view on various short stories and small novels. Broadened my perspective on imagery, symbols, and theme. Writing assignments aren't long or hard but class attendance and participation are a must. Easy lecture content however, just discussing the stories. Test are also easy, just on lecture discussions.
Criteria for assignments can be unclear, repeats himself, often making things more complicated than necessary. Good intentions, poor execution. Nothing special. In class assignments make it hard to skip. Not horrible not amazing.
Good teacher would take again. Sort of a scatter brain, starts talking about one thing and ends up completely off topic. His feedback is great, really helps you understand where you went wrong and what he was expecting! Did not like the fact that we had to do communications for our research essay, would've been nice to pick your own subject.
Personally, I enjoyed Tims class. Some lectures are scattered/drag on, but for the most part, they were helpful for future assignments. There was only two papers, one as a movie critic + the other as a broad subject of communication. Tim is a tough marker, so you have to learn what he likes + dislikes. Stay concise/entertaining + you'll be fine.
I didn't like him. He is a tough marker and only gives students 5 mins to write a quiz.
Great prof! Wonderfully balanced with his teachings and attention to detail. He takes time to hear when students have questions and opinions. He does put the onus on the student, for having homework and research completed. He explains everything thoroughly. He makes himself available to students before classes. I highly recommend him. Fair marker.
Tim was very clear about what needed to be remembered for the tests. Even while covering heavy material, he kept the discussion lively and entertaining. He's a genuinely funny guy, and doesn't mark or challenge anyone without a very clear, well justified reason. He's soft-spoken and inclusive. I'll take him again at whatever opportunity.
Tim is awesome, he really knows the subject matter and enjoys lively class discussions on the topics. He is always willing to consider students' opinions, and while he is a tough marker he is also very fair. If you work hard you'll easily do well.
Tim is a very knowledgeable teacher who knows the subject matter very well. He is a very tough marker. The one thing I do not like is how he grades reading responses as if we know the correct meaning of a poem/ story after he specifies he does not want us to use secondary sources to write these.
It seemed like Tim wasn't prepared most of the time. He back tracks and says, "Forget what I just said." on numerous occasions. I found his teaching style to be quite frustrating. He gives the class opportunities to speak, however this leads to nonsense and running out of time. He will give you praise in class and then marks the same work lower.
Mr. Haner sets you up well for future university studies. I had him last semester and while I didn't use my textbook in his class I frequently find myself referring to it and notes from his class for classes that are heavy on reports or essays. He's a great prof and is really inspiring. Put in a little effort and you'll pass with flying colors.
Tim is very scattered, but that is what makes him so entertaining because you never really know what tangent he'll go off on! As a science student needing another English to take, his class was great. Basically like a book club, you read the stories before class and analyze them.
Tim is a very hard marker. Expects way too much from first year students. He is funny and keeps class interesting but be prepared to work very hard to get a even a b.
I was excited to take Tim's class, but my experience with him as a prof was not the best. He is very opinionated and it is apparent in his marking. Don't bother handing in extra work on an assignment in order to receive a higher mark- he will completely disregard it. His feedback is also quite condescending, which lowered my confidence a bit.
Very understanding
3 hour classes go full length almost every time. Not a lot of tests, but lots of papers
Be prepared for harsh feedback! This class prepared me well for future courses but I found he was a very tough marker and can come across as condescending in class
Tim is often condescending and confusing when he lectures. He often can't decide what he wants when you catch him off guard with a question and sometimes his answers don't answer your original question. He is a nice guy, but doesn't seem to explain himself well, and would often lecture on something right before it was due.
Tim has a tendency to be very scattered as previously mentioned but it doesn't really take away from his lectures. He asks a lot of questions which I think really helped me get a better grasp of the material. Fair grader. Always gives lots of good feedback on papers. A bit of a ditz but generally well likeable and a good prof.
Very lecture heavy but his lectures are very scattered and dont make sense. He often assigns things then lectures on them right before or after they are do. Gives feedback that is condescending and just puts your writing down instead of helping to fix it. Uses his own opinions to mark your papers.
Tim's a good person. He just isnt very good at lecturing with the assignments due. Im not to good writer so i barely passed the course. But if your a good writer u will do fine.
He is a nice person but his lectures are dry and he spends a lot of time talking about insignificant things.
I enjoyed having Tim as a professor. His instructions are clear and he makes sure that students understand the material before moving on to something else. This class was not homework heavy and I found him interesting and engaging to listen to (even with dry material). I would definitely take a class with Tim again.
- Not clear about what he is looking for - Hard marker - Disorganized - A kind person, easy to talk to - I received an "A" or "B" in every one of my classes for the past 3 semesters and this was my first "C+" - Lots of questions and class participation does not benefit you in this class
don't let these reviews fool you. I took Tim not long ago and he is the HAGU teacher i have ever taken. Goes off topic so many times and expects you to watch boring lectures and listin to him, and expects you to get good grades. Dont get me wrong, he is great a providing feedback on what to improve but is the harshiest marker out their
Tim is a caring, nice guy and very soft-spoken. Participation matters a lot, so be prepared with questions/comments before heading into lectures. There are was lots of work to be done for the readings, e.g. multiple discussion posts & paragraph responses, two papers, midterm, and final. I really enjoyed the Gothic texts he covered.
Tim is a super caring professor! Reading these reviews I was super confused. Ive taken two of his classes so far, Eng105 & Eng108 and hes so passionate about what he does and it shows in his lectures. He cares about your success and is willing to help you understand anything youre struggling with. 10/10 will take another one of his classes!
His lectures are never ended on time, sometimes even more than 40 minutes past class time. The hardest marker Ive ever had. I was required to buy 3 textbooks for this class. I will never take another class with him again especially since his mid terms and finals are extremely difficult in a short amount of time.
I've had several enthusiastic and passionate English professors at UFV, but I particularly enjoyed his lectures. Offers good feedback, insight, and doesn't require current book editions: all 3 texts can be pdf / 2nd-hand. He ran late on a couple occasions, but only because he truly tries to engage students. Definitely taking him again if I can.
there was homework assignments every week but most were small and not too difficult. lots of reading (as expected) and weekly virtual lectures that were informative and engaging. lecture attendance was mandatory. chosen works were very interesting, most were gothic style literature. professor haner was very kind and understanding.
I have always disliked English through Highschool, but Prof. Haner was the first person to ever make it interesting because he was so passionate and loves what he does. There are a couple papers throughout the course and readings every week but for someone who isnt into English it was easy for me. Loved it and appreciate his attitude.
his lectures are not very engaging, talks a lot about simple things I think which makes it hard to pay attention to the entire lecture. Would be an easy online class if it comes to it. At times if your thoughts don't match his regarding a reading piece it might not get through of what you're trying to say- can be hit in marking. But an easy class.
He doesn't really consider the fact that students may have heavy classes, sure that may be the student's fault- but he piles homework on top of work that he assigned to you before. Basically, just way too much work for an English class, He is also very disorganized, beats around the bush when he gives lectures.
Tim is a nice guy, he is responsive to emails, and he makes lectures engaging. However, he is an EXTREMELY difficult marker, he is old school and does not make use of blackboard much. He has a group assignment that should be an individual assignment that has significant ability to decrease your grade. Overall, I would say dont take Tim - hard mark
I was really nervous after reading the ratings here, but I honestly enjoyed Academic Writing more than I thought was possible thanks to Professor Haner's class. He's a great prof and clearly passionate about the subject; I felt like this was the class I learned the most in. As long as you participate and do your work, this is a really great course.
He was such a tough grader and took off marks for very small things that most profs don't mind. He gave us lots of homework and papers but not very much time to complete them all.
I love the professor but he usually gives very less grades after a lot of hard work which sometimes lower students confidence.
Tim is a man who is very passionate about literature, and who does make the class a bit more interesting. He is quite approachable. I know his teaching doesn't work for everyone, but overall you can see that he is trying and putting in effort. His 108 class is mostly just you read something for class, and in-class you all discuss it. Easy readings.
He is very passionate and kind, offers lots of feedback in class and will absoultley help you during his office hours. He is clear about his expectations, however online his feedback can be hard to follow. He also would randomly post an assingment without warning when there wasnt even class due the next day! He makes participating very easy and fun
I did not enjoy my experience at all with Tim as he just expects us all to have the same love for English as he does. Marks very hard and makes lectures 100x longer than they have to be. Extremely boring speaker and just doesn't stop talking. Would not recommend it!
This was genuinely the most boring class I've ever taken. Don't buy the text book I never used it, Tim is a funny prof but his assignments can be hard if you hate English writing. Wouldn't take again
Tim as a person seemed to be very down-to-earth and chill, but he gave so many assignments, on top of a big paper we had to do that I easily became overwhelmed in his class, especially while trying to keep up with my other courses. I would advise not taking his class if you are beginning your first semester at UFV.
Tim is a very passionate teacher. Lectures are longer then they have to be! There are a few reading to do for in class assignments so you will need the textbook. Be aware of discuss form assignments due dates. Email responses are usually not responded in a timely matter.
This professor was literally the worst one I've ever had. Bro sucks at explaining the work and gives quite a lot of assignments. The assignments given were tough enough already, and he has such high standards for expectations as well. Highly would not recommend him if you are taking an English course.
He's a down-to-earth chill guy that has a clear passion for English. A decent amount of papers, but everything is available at the start of the course so nothing is a surprise and you can start early. He gives detailed feedback on every assignment so its easy to fix mistakes for the next assignments. You can also redo 1 assignment for better marks.
Not good
The worst English instructor I've ever had. He's a hard marker and NOT clear on what he wants. He literally wants you to explain every little thing in your essay... like be prepared to explain the meaning of your name. He's just a REALLY hard marker, especially for a 200-level class. I would never recommend him to anyone, don't take his class.
Pop quizzes that focus on tiny details in the stories read. Constantly changes the syllabus and what the reading for the class, often only a day before the actual class. Lectures are dull and tend to go off the rails, relies on students to continue the discussion when he can't think of anything. Made the content as boring as possible. Do not take.
content is easy but he is a hard marker. if you do not identify every little hidden meaning in what your reading he will deduct marks, he will also tell you that your personal interpretation wrong. if you don't participate he will call on you even if your hand isn't up which is so evil and anxiety inducing. I don't like him.
I enjoyed the lectures but really a tough grader.
He is nice in person but marks really hard and rude with feedback. He takes off so many marks and doesn't clearly explain why even if you ask him. His lectures talk about the story we are reading. There are pop quizzes but it was just for the short story unit. There are only 2 long essays you have to write but worth a lot and a final and midterm.
Tim's teaching style is erratic and unorganized, but he is generally flexible on due dates and extensions because of that. His grading (especially for opinion pieces or poetry explications) seems to heavily convey his own opinion and he will take marks off if he doesn't agree with your interpretation. Midterm was super short and easy though.
This professor is good for those who are ready to do a lot of homework but he is really a tough grader and deduct marks on minor mistakes. Never take again his course in the future.
Tim's class is challenging, with tough grading and lots of assignments. But he's engaging and passionate about the subject. Attend lectures, use the textbook, and try Unstuck ai for study prep - it really helped me get through this course.
I find the lectures very interesting GB and engaging. Workload and tests are not so heavy. However I find the professor can be strict about grading.
Don't listen to all the negative reviews. Tim was patient with my class and myself when learning the criteria. Tim made sure to teach what we were going to be tested on, and did not move on until we understood. 90% sure the people who wrote negative reviews didn't try because tim taught what double spacing was. You'll be just fine in this class.
Tim is amazing at his lectures, there isn't a lot of reading to do. A few easy quizzes, one short essay and one big assignment, no final exam. He made my first term so easy to breathe.
Don't believe all the bad reviews, Tim is an excellent professor that is very understanding of everything. He cares about class participation, note taking, and understanding of the lecture material. Just make sure you follow along the syllabus and you'll be okay. Very kind and respectful
i loved having Tim as my prof he is very caring and understands if you have to miss classes just let him know in advance. He is a great guy and his lectures are not hard, actually very easy and smooth. Tests are a bit heavy but if you review everything he tells you to review you should be perfectly fine. the bad reviews are people who didn't focus!
the people talking about how bad he is, clearly didnt pay attention and put in hard work. Tim is an amazing prof probably the best english teacher. Nicer than any english prof ive had. If your complaining about participation, you shouldn't attend english courses where participation is the most important
Tim is a little unorganized and takes very long to grade papers, but overall he's great. Beware of the pop quizzes though!
I like Tim! This was my favorite/easiest class in my first semester. He is a nice, understanding guy. doesn't give many assignments at all, and most of his classes feature lots of open discussion. He is a bit of a talker and hard marker, but if you truly like english this course is a breeze with him and was easier than my highschool english.
Tim Haner is a very tough grader. For example you do an essay get a low mark, retake it ang get an A, he will average it instead of replacing the grade. In the end your mark is still not what you were hoping for.
Very hard marker. Gives decent feedback on some things, but none on others, leaving you confused why you did not get very high marks. He is very specific with the answers he his looking for, and is not forgiving when it comes to marking. He is a nice person though.
Wasn't a great course, the lectures were boring and mostly ended up being conversations with other students and nothing would get done. I find there wasn't actually any teaching done. You have to write an explanation on a poem and we just didn't really learn how. Also a super tough marker if he doesn't agree with your view on something
Professor Haner is super nice and is clearly very passionate about English; however, I had a miserable time in the class. The classes are almost entirely boring lectures, especially for an English nerd. He marks harshly and focuses a lot on AI. I wrote against it, which, after comparing with peers, did negatively impact my mark.
Really loved his lectures. He definitely knows his stuff and includes a ton of interesting information. The only professor I've had who does pop quizzes, but they're pretty easy if you've done the reading.
Flop city.
