very encouraging and helpful
so insightful and very knowledgable
funny, cool guy! made poetry very enjoyable class even for a business student!
Very passionate individual
Always made me laugh. Made poetry interesting and fun
Very good, wants everyone to succeed.
His classes can be boring but he's really passoinate about what he teaches, especially the Odyssey. He's pretty funny and allows students to make revisions on their work - great guy!!
Tim is the greatest! HE is so interesting. The class was totally entertaining! I loved it. He gives some opportunities to re-write assignments.
Great prof. Very intelligent/insightful. Made Dante fun (!) and interesting. If you really want to learn and have fun doing it, take his classes
Tim's great. I love how passionate he is about the work..makes the class a lot more enjoyable than someone who's just standing up there reading from a book. awesome class
Tim pays attention to details and doesn't rush through material. He explains things thoroughly and gives students a chance to grow and improve their writing skills. I never wanted to miss English with Tim. He is an inspiring instructor!!!
I loved Tim!!! He is totally inspiring!! And a sexy proff to boot!!!
totally passionate about Milton
He's the cream of the crop! Intelligent, insightful, passionate, entertaining... The class is always too short.
Do not take this class with him!!! Sooooo boring and hard to figure out what he's looking for :(
Although I didn't give him the best easiness rating the stress was worth it. Tim is truly one of the best teachers around, those of you who don't appreciate that are missing out.
"OK people you have GOT to get this!" Yea, well I don't.
I wasn't totally sure how I felt about english before Tim; now there's no doubt in my mind. Not only is he a phenomenal teacher, he is a wonderful person and incredibly understanding. I couldn't recomend someone more.
I enjoyed this course so much. I think Tim's got an excellent style of teaching that makes you want to do well for him. He's very motivating and extremely humorous. TAKE A COURSE WITH HIM! You'll love it.
Tim is an amazing teacher. He is passionate about what he teaches, and makes the content so enjoyable. He is really encouraging and makes you strive to do your best in his class.
I've had tons of classes with Tim. He knows his stuff, is passionate about it, is funny, and extremely fair with marking. Understandable that some people aren't poetry inclined.....meet with him outside of class and he'll lay it out in simple terms = GREAT WAY FOR AN A!
I had him for ENG105, and I'm back for more!!! I can't get enough of him!!! He's the only teacher I know, who is actually passionate about the subject taught! The classes are always too short, but that's only because you can't get enough of him!!! I LOVE TIM HERRON!!!!!
I hate poetry, and I am walking away from this class 110% sure I understood what he was talking about! He is extremely good at being a teacher, and knows what he is talking about.
If you hate poetry, don't take his english 170!! I didn't know that it was poetry. Despite that, the class was great. He is very fair with his marking and lets you redo most assignments if you need to. He will make peotry fun and easy, even if you hate it to start with (like me). I'd take him again!
Great teacher if you like to rewrite every essay just to pull a c. Tim is an unrealistic marker and expects you "move him" with every essay you write, that’s the only way to get an A. But with his vague essay questions and enormous expectation its damn near impossible.
Definately not a class to take if you do not like poetry. It was a fun class and he is a fairly easy marker. However, he can be quite vague with instructions and feedback. I do not even think he talked about his expectation for essays in class. His class made me lose interest in English.
Witty, charming, and all the things you look for in a professor. It's nice to be able to re-do essays and it's easy. I finished with a B+ and I just showed up for class and wrote simples notes.
What can I say...he's amazing!!!!
H O T!!!
Tim is the best prof I've had at UCFV. His classes are enjoyable, and, yes, he is very charming and witty. I highly recommend any of his classes. He is clear and goes out of his way to help you do well.
Passion. Integrity. Empathy. Wit. What more could you ask for?
incredible, truly awesome teacher. Very clear and willing to meet with students at their level. He knows the content so well, very refreshing, and of course..yes very witty.
Id call him a good proff. hard marker though, really have to expand on those ideas! He spends the entire class (and about 10 minutes after the end) describing in detail what he thinks every word of a poem means. The class interaction is always good, but you never have to go to every class to get what he is saying.
Here's a hint for his classes: when you write on a specific poem, give an entire paragraph to the meaning, symbolism etc, of ONE word! He loves that! He really tries to teach you how to disect a poem and it can be very hard to follow him. I found myself thinking "Where the heck is getting this from?" Don't be afraid to ask him for help though!
You miss out if you don't expereince one of his classes. The classes are fun, he's hilarious and you'll learn so much.
Some may call it "dissecting." I say he can bring the words on the page to life in a way that no other English prof at UCFV can.
Best, funniest, most interesting, entertaining, and genuinely caring prof I ever had. Don't pass on the opportunity to take Tim!

Very enthusiastic about his subjects, and really good at starting conversations within the class. Hard marker though. I kept getting notes on assignments to both be more specific and shorten my paper. Not an easy task. Be painfully detailed and succinct in your assignments.

I don't see what all the hype is about. I took the course just cuz everyone talked about him as being so great. I think he is closed-minded, unwilling to hear any other takes on what we are learning. VERY FRUSTRATING. I would say, don't believe all the hype.
Great fun. i never thought i could laugh through Paradise Lost, but i did. he links everything you do through the course together. he always links the work to a theme. Keeps the classes light-hearted and funny. highly recommended.
I have taken Tim's classes one more than one occassion and they always prove to be amusing and enlightening. Believe the hype! Any class with him is easy if you listen to assignment instuctions instead of going your own way; the instructions are there for a reason. He always asks for student input and never says that any idea is wrong or silly.
Creative, passionate, energetic and dedicated. I liked Milton before, even more after / during his class. The atmosphere and the student-led seminars in his class were awesome. I liked his use of words like sublime, bent, carnal text man, delight vs desire, and sweet reluctant amourous delay. Obviously loves his job, it's his true calling, lucky.
Amazing. Such a passion for his work and it shows. Very clear expectations, and was willing to help every step of the way. Definitely reccomend him!
I thought it was great when he brought his little tyke to class in a snuggly once. This prof. remains a true inspiration. He is the reason I became an English teacher and have such a passion for poetry. He had me in tears because attending his classes was like going to a comedy club. I left class feeling on top of the world, ecstatically sublime.
dont really understand the hype.. dont have a class right after his class, he always keeps you late. He's a really hard marker and makes you rewrite your essays which can be good but is difficult when his comments and "the guide" dont help at all! oh and click your pen in class it drives him crazy, seriously.. hes losing it.
He is my "Dead Poets Society" of English teachers- he's hilarious, understanding, and can make even the idiots enjoy English. There's no lame attendance marks or participation marks- you write 2 essays and a final, no midterm. AND, the 1st essay can be re-written so many times that you can get 100 if you try! AMAZING TEACHER!!!
Very funny and easy to understand. His essays are very structured and you wont get a good mark if you deviate from his formula. Allows for discussion in class about the works but no group discussion. Overall a good teacher
Most crazy fun english class ever! I hated poetry before this class but he shows you how to make it come alive. Very easy to talk to and helpful if you go talk to him in his office. He likes to read out loud in class which is very fun to watch and listen to (especially since just reading poetry doesn't make it easy to understand). Take his classes!
Fun prof, but you really have to attend class to understand what he expects out of your. Very helpful and a little twisted.
If you liked poetry before, DO NOT take this class! If you liked 'transcendence' and 'sublime' before this class... you know what to do... He uses those afore 2 words so much in conection to previously excellent poetry that I actually cringe at their sound now. To him poetry is one way, that's all. Three thumbs down!
His poetry class literally snuffed any passion I had for poetry... He expects you to complete his sentences for him, grade school style. Good for lower level english students but I would not suggest him for anyone who loves literature. Very tedious!
The negative comments are all for the really basic-level courses, and that makes sense because he TOLD our class that he hates teaching them. They're boring. But anything above 150 and HE'S AWESOME! He loves his job and is very energetic while teaching. ONE OF THE BEST PROFS AT UFV!
Fantastic professor! Knows his stuff to an almost ridiculous level and completely shows you the beauty and subtlety of lyric poetry!Definitely grades papers hard but if your willing to put in the effort and do revisions he will completely help you to achieve an A. I would recommend him to anyone unless you hate Milton, but if you do your crazy!
Most amazing professor I have ever had. He knows so much about English and he digs so far past the surface. If you dont like being meticulous when reading lit dont take his class because he believes every word was chosen for a reason. I am going to take AS MANY classes with him as possible, such an amazing prof!
Okay to start.. he's not hot. He's old. Other than that he is an okay teacher. Passionate about English yes, but you can tell his favourites because he knows their names... Also. If you don't do something right on an essay he makes you buy the book he wrote on how to write essays in order to fix it to his standards.. getting a good mark takes work!
I personally hated this mans lectures, though you could tell he had a passion for what he was teaching. Often tries to get the class to finish his sentences which annoyed me to no end. BUT he was very lenient on paper due dates and would allow as many rewrites as you wanted. Over all would recommend this prof.
Tim's classes are great and you will learn much. However, some students may find his teaching style unorthodox. His habit of trying to get his students to finish his scentences is somewhat trying at times. His unlimited essay re-writes will make sure the hard working student will recieve an A in his class.
Tim's great. He's very clear and goes through shakespeare word for word so that you understand and always connects points. It is a little annoying that he is constantly asking the class to finish his sentences, but it gets you invovled so it's not too bad. And you can re-write essays which is nice.
This man is a god. He is hilarious and keeps class interesting. So refreshing and different than most English classes. Don't be afraid to talk in class. Best prof at UFV bar none.
I took English 099 and it was great. Tim is funny and I wasn't even sky to talk in class.
Tim is funny and nice. He is good at making the class interesting and he is always willing to help.
Tim is passionate about his subject. He accepts any and all interpretations and opinions, but guides you to his reasoning for interpreting the way he does. He allows unlimited rewrites, so you get whatever grade you work for. VERY good at offering help outside of classroom hours. I will definitely take his classes again.
Tim makes me become interested in poetry. Although he is a hard marker, if you follow what he requires and revise following his suggestions, you will definitely get a very satisfying mark. Great great teacher.
Fair marker, easily approachable, has a great energy.
Tim is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the subjects he teaches! This was my third course with him and I absolutely love the energy he brings to each class. He is a very fair marker, and gives a ton of insight into the literature of the course. He can go off on tangents at times, but it doesn't subtract from the course too much.
Just an overall great teacher, tried to keep the class engaged for the 1st year Poetry course (English 150) and he did a great job. Keeps the content light, and fun. Totally taking more classes by him. P.S Participation really helps your final grade, if you seem eager to learn he's more likely to provide extensions.
Tim is funny and well engaged in his lectures. You will engage in the class even if you don't like the material. He does expect a lot from you when grading your work but gives good feedback. I liked him better for 208 than 150 because I felt like he was more passionate about the material. However, if you don't participate in class you won't do well
Tim is super passionate. He really has made me think and broaden my horizons in terms of thinking about classical/romantic poetry. He's brilliant at what he does.
Tim is a great professor. He makes you finish his thoughts & he picks every minor detail apart, but he's not bad, not bad at all; kinda "sublime" ;)?
Tim is an incredible professor. Every class he comes in bursting with energy. It's obvious he's passionate about what he does. He likes his essays structured in a very specific way, but he outlines exactly what he wants, so as long as you're willing to put in the effort, you should do fine. Don't be scared to approach him for help either.
brings humor to the class but specific to how he wants you to think and it can be difficult because he has his own vocabulary he expects you to know. wont rly explain things unless a student contributes first and pushes you to participate. can take a VERY long time on one poem, eg one hour on one stanza. he's very specific and super nice guy.
To sum Tim's classes up in a phrase: there's never a dull moment. His teaching method will almost certainly turn some off, but I've had few professors as enthusiastic about their teaching, and as clearly dedicated to engaging their students as Tim. He teaches clearly, grades tough but fairly, and has a sense of humour. Highly recommended.
I absolutely loved this class and Tim as a professor. Yes, he does expect participation in lectures, but it made the class engaging & fun, & he won't force you to participate. Yes, you do have to buy his guide to essay-writing & follow his method, but once you get used to it it's really a great way to write papers & will help you in other classes.
I've taken several classes by Tim. He is a nice guy and gives you lots of chances to revise papers for better marks. He usually has two papers worth 50% each or 40% each and a 20% participation mark depending on the class. He has an essay writing handbook which is useful for your first essay with him. Sometimes interrupts you to say you're a genius
Tim is a tough grader and has very specific requirements for his assignments but he offers excellent help and feedback. If you want to learn, take his classes! He's very enthusiastic about what he teaches which helps make it less boring especially in his Paradise Lost class.
Great prof. Positive, engaging, humorous. Very tough marker!
I loved this class! Most classes are discussion, and there are a few papers that you write as per his guide. Put in the effort and come to class, and make sure you study the guide on essay writing!
One of my favorites! So funny and engaging during class. Only graded on 1 paper per unit and a paper as the final, but many opportunities to resubmit and improve previous papers. He likes a certain style of writing, but you learn what hes looking for early on. Got lower grades than I expected, but got great feedback. A class meant for your growth
Don't take a class after any of his. You won't make it on time. Expects you to be early to his class and then extends class into your personal time, or next class time which is extremely rude and stressful
Tim is extremely enthusiastic and interesting in class lectures and discussions. He has a good sense of humour, and gets to know his students. He is particular about what he wants, but gives clear instructions and plenty of feedback to help you achieve your desired grade. Excellent! If you attend class and pay attention you will learn a lot.
He's one of the best profs that I have ever taken. His lectures are always amazing and helpful. If you show up every class, you will handle your work easily.
I took ENGL 312 - Shakespeare (summer) with Tim and it was awesome. He's a very enthusiastic and understanding instructor. It's clear that he loves the content he teaches and that he cares about the success of his students. This class was the highlight of my semester and I would absolutely take another one of his classes if given the chance.
I love his lectures. You can tell he is passionate about what he is talking about. Being in class isn't mandatory so if you miss a class that's okay. However, I would recommend going to all the classes because it helps a heck of a lot with the papers. He does mark fairly hard on his papers but he gives you ample time to revise them and resubmit.
Tim is an engaging professor and makes lectures interesting. He gives you the option to revise your papers, which he marks very harshly. He refuses to give a grade above an 88%, so even if your work is flawless you can't get higher than an A.
Tim is a gifted public speaker and uses genuine humour to engage his class. We examined ancient Greek literature, which can be another world altogether, but Tim made the material accessible, relatable, and interesting. He has an extraordinary ability to examine literature/poetry in a way that makes pulling out important, subtle aspects easy.
DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASSES. His attitude was unapproachable and rude; he refused to do online office hours and only wanted to communicate via email. He often didn't respond to emails, or wasn't helpful in the least. His feedback on essays is often contrary; no outside sources and wants you to replace your ideas with his. Not worth the stress!
Tim is probably the worst professor I've ever had. He's very out-of-touch. I think he really cares about the material, but is unwilling to accept students' ideas about texts - he wants you to write papers with his ideas instead. Extreme essay standards as a result; totally inflexible; wouldn't use zoom despite the pandemic; made me cry. Never again
I read a lot of very good reviews for him but I feel like his feedback is not overly helpful and that he is looking for something wrong with the work. I dont feel encouraged or excited bout writing, but paranoid and self conscious.
Tim Herron was an extremely difficult professor to work with. He assigns an unrealistic amount of homework and doesnt allow a lot of space for creativity. I was really surprised to find that he has a 4.3/5 on here. I wish I can go back in time and tell my past self not to take this class, this semester was miserable for me because of this class.
He is incredibly harsh. Let me explain; told us to use expository essay to be creative, I made an incredibly personal essay that he (when I submitted early for review) said was great. Then he nearly failed me for it and told me it was artificial and awkward. When I asked for a one on one meeting to go over it, he said no.
2 assignments per week, which rely on readings that are very text heavy. Creates video lectures of which half are mandatory, but to understand most of the meaning of the text you need to watch all lectures, which are about 2-3 hours worth each week. (Could be shorter!) 2 essays worth 40% each. Would not take class if you're not ready to read A LOT.
Worst prof I’ve ever experienced. Disrespectful and unclear criteria.
Tim is a good professor. His Essays were easy to follow and his grading was fair and clear. Overall a great teacher to get you started in English or just to finish off some basic English classes.
The amount of work was INSANE with essays worth 40%. This class was supposed to be online with NO MEETING TIMES! Technically there wasn't any but he released 2.5 hours of lectures at 11am twice a week and assignments have to be handed in by 9pm THAT DAY. I took this class because I could do it on my own time but I guess not, I had to drop the class
I love taking online classes with Tim, his lectures are fantastic. He is organized, patient, lenient, thoughtful, and adamant on student success.
I took the course online and we had to watch the lecture before the next one was posted. There were 10 weekly assignments to do and 4 larger assignments. The assignments were marked in a timely manner.
He's clear, concise, and very easy to parse. His lectures make sense, and he does his best to make your load as easy as possible.
I had taken this class after seeing the rating. I thought this class would be a well balanced class that I could manage with the other extremely tough courses I was taking, but I was extremely wrong. There is an insane amount of reading and assignments that need to be done as well as 2.5 hour lectures twice a week that need to be watched. So tough!
Do not take if you are not ready for excessive work as well as really long lectures!!!! Very reading dense class with an unrealistic amount of work assigned.
My biggest mistake was trusting this website's reviews towards him, as well as picking him thinking the course will be easy. I do not like his method of teaching, and he constantly uploads assignments after assignments. If you are taking ENG 108, do NOT take him if you have already taken difficult courses.
3 full-length novels/plays, dozens of poems, 2-page assignments twice a week all semester and 2 essays (equating to over 50 pages of writing!), a final exam on novels (with no information 10 days before test), and 5-6 hours of lectures weekly. INSANE for a 100-level class. No feedback. Impossible grader. AVOID AT ALL COST. Left me feeling defeated.
The final is in a week and there is still no information on what it is supposed to cover. Expects us to read 8 chapters a week along with long assignments. Lectures are posted on the DAY the assignment is due so sometimes you can't even complete the assignment ahead of time. He may be a better teacher online but my experience with him was horrible
Based on the reviews posted in the past weeks, students currently in ENLG-108 are struggling. The amount of work assigned in this class is simply unrealistic. It is frustrating that there is no way to contact other students to discuss bringing our concerns to the teacher or school. If you are attending the Final exam, COME EARLY and we can talk!!
Tim is by far the best English professor at UFV. His lectures are very interesting, the class discussions he leads are fantastic, and he gives very good feedback on assignments. While you are graded on a few things and the tasks are difficult, Tim himself is great.
I absolutely love taking classes with Tim, he makes lectures really fun and interesting. His assignments are clear and fairly easy to follow, although he is quite a hard marker. Overall really enjoyed this class.
Avoid this professor at all costs! Marks SUPER hard and expects way too much for a lower-level english class. LOTS of reading and talks very slow.
Pros: lectures genuinely interesting, has a great knowledge about lit and communicates it well. Cons: unrealistic amount of homework. I had a very hard time keeping up with the two weekly multi page assignments plus lots of reading plus essays in this course.
He is passionate about what he teaches, but his expectations are ridiculous for an entry-level English course. There are two novels and so many poems to go through. It was frustrating because he gave me a lot of feedback for my rough draft, and after I applied all of the corrections, he only gave me an extra 5%, which was very frustrating.
Lots of homework, but he is such a good prof. Really willing to help outside of class time and cares about his students getting good grades. Will let you redo essays and gives 7 extra days to submit late assignments if needed. 100% would take again.
His video lectures and feedback were incredibly helpful. His lectures provided clear explanations which made poetry easier to understand. The course itself was challenging: reading 3 books, lots of poetry, and writing 3 essays. First 2 essays, he allowed us to revise and resubmit. Final essay was a take-home exam.
If you're looking for what English class to take, Tim Herron's class is it. His lectures are a little on the longer side, there were several 30+ minute videos twice a week. However in the video lectures it's clear he cares about what he is teaching and it's not boring! His essay grading is very straight to the point yet in-depth and informative.
The professor is clearly passionate about his subject, so passionate that he would rather listen to himself write an essay rather than hear the opinions of his students. For essays you were given your thesis statement, rather than letting you decide something on your own. The amount of work is also very unrealistic for an introductory class. AVOID
I went into this course unsure of how it would go and it ended up being my favourite one I took this semester thanks to Tim. His lectures are engaging and very helpful when it comes to understanding the course material. He also tries to use modern slang to keep the class engaged which I found funny. I highly recommend taking a course with Tim!
Very lecture heavy, and so much homework for an introductory level course. However, this does prepare you for the work you may have to do in higher level courses. He is very passionate and his lectures are engaging, but he talks pretty slowly. I put his video lectures on x1.5 speed because otherwise I'd zone out. Material was interesting as well.
The workload in this class is punishing - lots of reading, writing assignments, and unclear expectations. However, the lectures are engaging. Lean on Unstuck ai and past student resources to manage the heavy workload.
Expects drafts and outlines of papers, but will refuse to grade a paper if he doesn't think it's good enough and expects you to revise AGAIN in order to receive a grade. Somewhat lenient with due dates, but makes weird comments in class and comes off demeaning.
never satisfied with your submitted assignments, no matter how good you have attaempted.
Tough marker for a 100 level class.
I wont say I'm a good writer, because I'm not. That being said, he's a very hard marker for a level 100 general requirement. If you like English courses he'd be fun, as hes very lenient when it comes to deadlines and revisions. He definitely wants you to incorporate the course material into your daily routine to get an A.
DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN. I will say he's a good prod and the lectures are interesting but oh my god there is so much homework. Reading assignments twice a week is actually crazy and most questions can't even be answered effectively in just a paragraph. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ALREADY AHVE DIFFICULT COURSES!!
Tim is not completely horrible, but he does come across as very condescending. He is a very tough marker and this course is super lecture heavy. I probably won't take another course of his after this semester is over.
Tim is fantastic, and I have loved taking classes with him. He might seem a little intimidating at first, but once you have had a few days in class with him, you realize he just makes jokes you might not realize are jokes. He has so much passion and energy, and made reading the Iliad a super enjoyable experience! He made me WANT to discuss it!
So many assignments but doesn't mark any of them. The only feedback he gives is on essays, which are graded incredibly harshly and his comments are rarely constructive. Also generally rude in communication. Avoid
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. He gives tons of homework and is an excessively harsh marker. I give him an F. He's so anal and never satisfied. Bye Tim!
