Best prof I ever had. Cared about his students and really was enthused about what he teaches. Great clarity and hilarious lectures. Exams are hard but he makes sure that class average gets scaled as high as possible. Awesome guy
take him..most of my friends have him and they all ace the course. Clear note, don't need to spend $200 on textbook.Take him and avoid Brain Graystone...
Great energy, classes are interesting and entertaining. He clearly knows his stuff and challenges you to think. Helped inspire interest in a subject I thought I was going to hate, and he really goes out of his way to help students. Highly recommend.
Tim is the best professor I have had in Sauder - he works hard and succeeds at making his class interesting and relevant. This is one class that I wasn't interested in taking at all, but because of Tim, I looked forward to coming to his class. Really cool guy. Bonus: lecture slides have fun animations.
I never thought I'd be interested in logistics until I took Tim's class! His notes are very clear and helpful. Exams were fair, 80% are quantitative questions.
I hate stats, I hate TLOG, but I love Professor Huh. He took a hellish class (for me at least) and made it a million times more interesting and easy to digest. He has a great sense of humor. I recommend him to anyone who struggles with math or the topic. He is always so helpful!
I don't usually rate profs but this guy needs more recognition. Tim's seriously one of the most caring profs I've had. He takes great effort to make concepts interesting and clear for students. Bombed my midterm and went to office hours for help, was very encouraging and supportive. Tries to inspire students to achieve more, awesome prof!
My favourite pro!!!!!Chat with me a lot during personal time, gives me advice for my career and life. Got 88 at last but he was disappointed haha
Keeps lectures lively with his touch of humor. Fairly helpful. Lecture attendance for this course isn't essential (I watched The Sopranos and played games during lecture all term, never took a single note he posts slides). Plenty more time than required was allotted for the straightforward final. Many finished with 90%+.
TIm is great! Take his class!
Tim taught my class for the second half of the term and was hard to understand with his accent and soft spoken voice. He was very rude and condescending in his office hours and critiscized his studnets when they asked "dumb questions". Still managed to pull of a B+, one percent short of an A-. FINAL WAS HARD.
My favourite prof!!
Sit at the front of the class, I couldn't understand what he was saying when I sat in the back. DO ALL OF THE PRACTICE QUESTIONS. My friends who decided against doing the practice bombed the exam. The exam was hard, but if you did the practice and paid attention in class, you can easily do well.
Tim was such an interesting and funny guy. His lectures were a lot of fun and he had a lot of great stories that he managed to tie into the class. Final was hard, but fair. I really enjoyed his class and I hope I can take another in the future.
His lectures are captivating and his little snippets of life stories are interesting as well. He does a good job teaching the content.
Tim is so funny! It is a class to look forward to and although the content can sometimes be difficult, he tries to make it relatable and humorous. $20 work book that you write all your notes in with guided questions which is very helpful. Would recommend!
Tim's such a hilarious guy. He teaches well and shows concern for his students' learning. Great prof in general!
TIm is a very nice guy, but I often found his explanations more scattered than Greg's and was left feeling confused. If you work really hard you'll get it eventually but I wouldn't say he's perfect. Always go to class.
Tim is easily one of the most caring profs out there. His lectures are entertaining, his office hours are helpful, and Tim is just an overall amazing Dad-like character. He genuinely cares about student success, evident through office hours. His Final Exam was challenging, but fair. Lots of practice questions and material available.
He is a really nice guy! Very respectful towards students and encourages participation. The final was very hard though
Tim was very nice and tried to make class as enjoyable as possible. The COMM290 midterm was really easy however the final was the hardest test I've ever taken.
Tim is so funny and such a genuine person. Sometimes he goes through class concepts too quickly to follow, but overall he's great. The midterm was reasonable, but definitely study hard for the final and manage your time wisely.
He's really funny and very caring. I can tell he's a good prof, but I just didn't pay attention to his lectures. Not that he's boring or anything. I just have a very short attention span. Assignments weren't too bad. If you need help, you can just ask your friends and you'll get it.
Prof. Huh is so humorous and his class is vivid.
Tim is a great professor especially paired with Greg. 290 was really fun, but in Tim's section a lot of probability stuff was either poorly explained or rushed over quickly because he feels as if it is easy concepts when in reality they are extremely difficult. Do your homework and keep an eye out on your progress, course concepts are hard
He's great at teaching the content, lectures are worth going to if you like learning. There's not a lot of practice questions though, which can make you feel a little unprepared for the exams, but that goes for most profs teaching the course anyway, his exams are pretty fair overall.
Rushed over the second half of the course which was about probability. Lack of difficult problems sets and lack of practice final made me tank the actual final. My average went down significantly. Good person, but not a good lecturer and that's what I'm looking for. regardless of how nice someone is
Super nice guy, and regardless of effectiveness, he's trying his best for the students. He's got a bit of an accent, and his explanations are sometimes a little ambiguous, but if you pay close attention and do the homework, there is no reason why you would do poorly. My best suggestion is line up lecture with the slides/notes, and you'll be fine.
Not a bad prof for the second half of COMM 290. Decent jokes. Covers probability, which will be harder. Fair exams.
Love this man. Would take any other course he offers. Caring and concise, more importantly, interested in what he' teaching. Also cares about the individual
Tim is a nice person. However, he talks kinda weird. Can learn content in 15 minutes with 1.5x speed, (shoutout to the short girl in the videos). Lectures are boring, dry, and redundant. Not concise, not clear. WILL test you on content that he went over for 2 seconds. Overall a bad experience, would not recommend. But u probs don't have a choice!
Similar to Greg, Tim was a great prof for the second half of COMM 290. The content in the second half is absolutely unrelated to the first half and in my opinion, it was harder because of the way questions were formatted. The lectures were very engaging though! But if you skip class, it would be quite difficult to grip onto the content by yourself.
Tim takes a very dry concept and makes it interesting enough to hold your attention. He explains things very well and you'll learn a lot if you just pay attention in class. The topics build upon one another for the most part. Could have been a really boring class without Tim as the prof!
such an incredible professor, one of few that actually seems like he cares about his students. very engaging when teaching rather bland content. he has very interesting examples when teaching, but it makes the content more applicable to real life. good at tech and made online school much smoother. overall amazing!!
Tim is an above-average instructor, and a good fit for 290. At times, he seems to be confused about the content he is talking about, but his pre-class video lectures provide excellent knowledge of the week's content. He speaks at an appropriate pace, however, he talks in this weird way which I do not like. He is a solid choice overall.
Funny guy, showed a lot of care for his students. Respectful and answers your questions.
Tim is a very caring prof who you can tell puts effort into making the class engaging. Great job adapting to the online format. Only issue with him is sometimes his explanations are a bit weird, but I think it's in part because English is not his first language. I think he is at the University primarily for research, but is still a great lecturer.
Great lecturer! Tim does his best to simplify a somewhat complicated topic and breaks it down with practical examples. While this half of Comm290 is more challenging than the first half, if you go to lectures, do homework, and the many practice exams, you'll be well prepared for the final exam. The exam is challenging but practice makes perfect.
One of the most amazing professors. So respected and caring about students. He often talks about his wife and children which is so heartwarming. He teaches this subject so well. Although this subject is an easy course, I was motivated thanks to Tim.
Tim is awesome! His lectures and pre-recorded videos can be a little slow-paced, but he still makes lectures engaging and does a great job at teaching material from the course. Was awesome to have him as a prof this term.
Amazing professor, one of my favourites. Developed a close relationship with him over the course of the semester, and he helped me grow exponentially. Funny guy too.
The second half of COMM 290 is definitely more challenging than the first, but Dr. Huh does an awesome job of explaining difficult concepts such as probability. His lectures are so fun and engaging, and he is always willing to offer extra guidance in office hours. The exam was quite tricky make sure to do lots of practice questions in advance.
Tim Huh is the sweetest professor I had in my first year. His lectures are clear and humorous. It's important to pay attention to what he's saying to do well. Classes feel a bit on the slower side but can sometimes go by very quickly. Revision is definitely important, and understanding the content takes some time, but is fairly easy.
Very interactive and interesting lectures. But you have to show up to each class as there are clicker questions that count towards your final grades during each lecture. It is not a hard class.
Prof. Huh is a pretty good prof. The second half of COMM290 is definitely more difficult and I do feel like there are areas that could've been explained better. Nonetheless, His lectures are very interesting, engaging and funny. Tough final, but as a whole a very good professor.
I absolutely loved Tim Huh. His examples for probability concepts were absolutely hilarious and his lectures were so fun to sit through. Be warned: the final for this course is quite difficult. Even considering this, it still felt fair. I will definitely be taking this prof again if I get the chance.
Nice professor with entertaining lectures. However, in-class examples, assigned homework, supplemental videos and extra practice resources given are insufficient prep for the final. Not only was this the case because of the time limit, but questions were worded poorly. All in all, decent prof but I didn't feel like I learned much.
Tim is a funny guy and uses really hilarious examples when explaining probability concepts. There are lots of problems with the final exam. It was way too difficult, outlandishly difficult. Many practice problem sets were given but after doing the final, it felt like that did not really help at all. The wording in the questions were also weird.
I'm not sure if this was his first time teaching this course but he was alright. I feel like he and the other prof didn't explain materials as much and when it came time for the quizzes, we were lost. He can explain a lot things better but he's the only prof for this course so we had to suck it up :(
He's super funny and seems like a nice guy, but the pacing of his lectures was a bit off. Some lectures went way too quickly for me to keep up, while others went incredibly slow and I lost interest, but watching the supplemental videos helped with that. I found the homework to be much easier in comparison to the final.
Great great great
Tim is an amazing prof. Extremely funny and a good lecturer. He made the second half of COMM 290 engaging, despite the dullness of the material. However, the practice exams are not a good representation of the final. You can do well in this class if you really understand the concepts.
Amazing prof. He knows his stuff and is very good at explaining it. Extremely funny and interesting lectures. Loved all of it! Difficult final, but he's an encouraging prof. Would definitely take again!
He is very boring and unhelpful. He's one of the few profs that genuinely doesn't care about students. I have email proof of how petty this man is, and I'm not going to stoop to his level of pettiness and disclose this info, but long story short, be careful of him and just grind through (no other way). Final exam average: 53% out of 900 students
Took the course back in 2020W1. In short, Tim is amazing. He puts effort into making lectures engaging, slides are clear, knows what students struggle with and takes extra time to focus on those concepts, exams are representative of the course material and done through canvas (auto-graded). Would say the same about his co-prof (Greg Werker).
He has lots of recorded videos on canvas which are very helpful for studying the material. He has many funny stories and explains concepts very clearly. The final exam is very difficult though so beware, he takes the concepts we learned in class and complicates them heavily. Make sure you understand all the content very well.
Although everyone always finds the Comm 190 final disgustingly hard, overall I think Tim Huh was one of my favorite professors so far! He keeps his huge lectures engaged, and his notes + supplemental videos on Canvas were extremely helpful for exam prep
Overall I found Tim to be a great teacher! His lectures are funny and easy to follow. However, I found the final to be misrepresentative of the difficultly on assignments. The final exam average was in the low 50s and included applications in ways that were unseen. Best advice is to make sure your midterm and homework marks are as high as possible
People make this course out to be harder than it is. The final was a slightly harder than the homework but was a good representation of what was taught in lectures. Make sure you can do all the calculations very quickly!! The toughest part of the final was the time, I left lots blank. Tim is great at explaining concepts and is a genuine person.
Has a straightforward way of teaching. Provided a practice midterm that was very useful for studying. Provided interesting cases for the case study aspect of the course. Textbook was not necessary and did not show up on the midterm (I haven't taken the final yet). Definitely would recommend for 204, he is funny and a great teacher!
I LOVE TIM
This is probably the best professor you can find in UBC, super nice guy and excited lectures. Dude gives you the high school chemistry teacher vibe.
AN ABSOLUTE GOAT
He provides lots of practice for his midterms/finals which help a lot! I studied for the midterm in 2 days with it and got 88%. He cares about his students as well, he's always checking in during class and makes class engaging with silly stories. The only annoying thing would be having to keep up with notes because he doesn't upload them afterwards
We love Tim
I love Tim, he always gives you a lot of prep for exams. During my final I recognized some questions that were really similar to the homework or practice sets. Lectures are a time to learn and relax, he's never too fast. If you do everything you're supposed to do that you'll be fine and Tim is really the best, every friend of mine thinks so too.
Tim is super funny and a very caring person. You can do very well in his course with the resources he gives, so use them!. Many people will overrate him because everyone loves him, but the honest truth is that you cannot understand what he says and the questions he writes on the final exam are worded very poorly. However, I would take him again!
Strongly recommend going to class. Lectures are brutally slow and could be taught in 1/3 the time, but its worth the 3 hours a week. Lecture slides posted to canvas are useless without being annotated in class. If you took Stats 12, this class will be a breeze. Easy midterm, impossible final exam. Fun class if you like optimization.
Professor Huh is a great lecturer and cares quite a bit about his students. COMM 190 in itself is not a very difficult course, but Professor Huh ensures to hold informative lectures, give ample practice problems and extra material to ensure that students that study easily pass the course.
There is no textbook and the slides were not very informative. he was an engaging teacher, that is passionate about the subject which makes it easier to learn.
He was really great in guiding students to learn comm190
I love Tim Huh
Tim is a legend!! as long as you put in the work the course material is not to bad to understand and you can do well in this class
The class is engaging and explained at a good rythm. Exams follow the homework and mock exams are available to study. Tim is very nice.
While I wasn't a big fan of how long the lectures were dragged out to be, Tim made them bearable. How well you do in the class really depends on if you fully understand the material. I found Tim a lovely and reasonable professor who gave resources to help students succeed.
Does a great job in explaining everything and overall a great prof. COMM 190 will be easy if you are a logical person who actually listens attentively. If not, it could be hard. But overall everyone loved him and content was quite easy.
Best prof I've ever had
Engaging lectures and very fair midterm and final.
Tim is a sweetheart and it becomes clear very quickly why he's so loved. His lectures are enjoyable and he's overall a pretty nice guy. His exams are tough but if you attend lectures, use the extra reviews and videos he provides and try, you'll pass at the very least. COMM190 is overall an okay-ish course, but he makes it really fun!
He's so cute and funny love him
You know those people who would laugh at anything the teacher says so they can get a higher grade? That is these reviews, in all honesty, Tim sometimes makes no sense and you have to self-teach a lot of the material. He's funny, but him being funny has nothing to do with his skills as a prof.
Do all of the practice problems and you will do really well in the class.
Tim's lectures are enjoyable and pretty easy to understand. If some concepts don't make sense to you, you can ask him and he'll be happy to help right away.
Interesting class, although pretty useless. He is not a bad prof. I just feel like he is in UBC to do research and teaching is more of a mandatory sidequest for bro. The final was super F**ked tho, didnt test you on class stuff, I heard better things about previous/other profs. Overall, pretty meh
Tim is an amazing professor who makes lectures enjoyable. His passion for teaching is clear and his lectures are easy to follow with a solid amount of Iclickers and homework to prep for tests. I would definitely recommend Tim as a professor
Such a nice guy, makes lectures quite fun. Deserves every dollar he earns. Course is laid out nicely.
I love Tim, he teaches so well and makes sure we can all understand the concepts being taught. His homework was reasonable and the midterm was fair. Plus he also gave us sufficient resources to prep for the midterm and final and he also makes lectures fun and enjoyable.
Great professor and can be super hilarious at times. Lecture material is usually super simple to understand, and while posted slides aren't super detailed, there is a bunch of other resources to use. The midterm is worth 30% and the final is 50% so it is very test heavy. Practise answering questions fast and do all the problem sets.
Great prof until the final. Goes radio silent and leaves all the students for dead. This happens every year apparently in this course, so prepare for an incredibly difficult final that is way harder than the course itself and the practice final materials. This is done to bring the course average down, and its an unfortunate thing that profs do this
Tim Huh is the GOAT. His lessons are generally pretty easy to follow, plus he shares hilarious anecdotes. Very chill and approachable too - only slight complaint is that the midterm avg for the past couple years have been “too high”, so it gets overcorrected with a pretty tough final. But overall, very nice guy and clearly has fun with teaching.
I thought I won't pass this course cuz I didn't pass the 50% worth final. But he is so kind and let me pass this course!
Tim is so kind and approachable, but his teaching can be confusing & the lecture notes are sparse. There are a plethora of video resources & problem sets to accompany all of the modules which are IMMENSELY helpful (I wish I watched them b-4 lectures). Go to office hours, but be prepared (I got a 90 on the midterm & then a 55 on the final).
he always goes the extra mile to make the lectures fun and entertaining which is something I was not expecting. The midterm was also really easy and near identical to the practice tests, the final isn't hard in a conceptual sense but more so in the sense that you just don't have enough time, the questions aren't too bad, they just take way to long
Tim Huh is a great prof with clear lecture notes. Try to do well on the midterm (85+) so you have some wiggle room for the final, which will be harder time management-wise. Do all of the additional practice problems in the review section of each module and you will do great!
Tim was a really good prof and his lectures were fun. He went a bit too slow at the start of the term especially when talking about easy topics like calculating slope but he sped up as the course progressed. A lot of people did really well on the midterm, while the final was significantly harder. If you understand the material you'll be fine.
Tim's a great teacher, he will teach you the basic stuff but you have to self-teach the harder stuff to do well on the midterm/final. Please do the optional practice he provides, this is most similar to his tests. Homework was easy
Tim is a really well known prof, good to have in first year. Funny and passionate! However his lectures teach things a little bit more simplistically than what the tests expect of you. Focus on doing practice questions in his class and take notes on nuances that you learn for specific questions on homework and the midterm to prep for the final.
my fav course in term 1! You can def get a solid grade if u do put in the effort (spent about 0.5-1 hour on hw and a couple of days for review before the midterm/final). Grades are mostly based on exams and i love that :3 btw extra practice after each module on canvas does help and i did all of them
It's hard not to like Tim, he brings a great attitude to the class and has a good sense of humour. At times I found his lectures were a little to fast paced and he could be a little hard to understand. COMM 190 is a hard course without a doubt but it helps having a prof as passionate as Tim Huh.
Entertaining lectures, teaches concepts well, midterm and final were more challenging compared to homework
Tim is great and his lectures are super entertaining. However I hated 190 because I find classes like that incredibly boring and have no intention of going into logistics. Lots of resources to study tho and helpful labs. However, be aware that the exams can be a lot harder than other course work/practice exams. Final is rough.
Great guy, great prof. I had him for the second half of the course, which I personally just didn't really like the content of. But he's was great, no complaints.
Tim is one of the best sauder professors. He makes lectures very interesting and understandable. The final was more difficult than the midterm by far, but the class was still one of my favourite first year courses. Definitely make sure to understand the concepts early on, since the content will add up quickly.
explain concept clearly
Tim explains everything in great detail. If you missed the lectures or would like to review the lectures, he also posts pre-recorded videos from the COVID era that condense basically everything. The only thing would be that he sometimes goes on for too long. He explains concepts completely condensed in the videos for 10 minutes for 80 minutes...
Tim is a really nice guy, he makes his lectures engaging and actually funny!!!!! His midterms are very fair but the final was the worst exam I have ever taken at UBC. I like his teaching style but this class is niche. Its hard to explain what COMM 190 even is and you can't find online resources for his classes. Please attend all lectures and labs!
Tim is an all-around wholesome guy. Lectures are entertaining and not too difficult to follow. The exams are much more difficult than the homework/practice sets. Keep up with each week's material and ask your TAs for help as the second half of the course moves quickly.
Good professor Tim. Love him
Tim is honestly a great prof, the only prof I had in first year that gets a full round of applause at the end of every lecture for the whole term. Always a great time being in class! Make sure to stay on top of everything as the content can move fast if unprepared.
Best prof of all time.
Bro what u taught are all l learned in high school
Tim is a very nice guy in class, and he tries to make each lecture engaging. The midterm was very straightforward and in class you think everything is easy. That is until the final. He does not prepare you at all for the final and asks the most bizarre questions. None of the practice he posted was helpful so even if you do it you are still screwed.
Tim Huh is a very nice and funny guy. He tries to make his lectures enjoyable and easy to understand; however, don't get fooled because the exams are EXTREMELY more difficult than anything you will ever learn in class. I can't even tell you what we are learning in this class and I hope I never have to use it again.
this was my first year in comm 190... he was such a great prof-- very smart and kind!
Tim is a very respected prof. He is definitely one of the best that I have ever had. Everyone respects him and follows along. This is mainly because he is very smart and funny. He is really good at explaining seemingly hard concepts. If you pay attention, he actually explains everything very thoroughly and is a great guy overall. Great prof.
He is an amazing professor, midterm was decent. For finals I spent over 50+ hours studying , I walked into that exam fully confident in myself but I walked out a different man. You know those math questions where it's so terribly worded you have no idea what that means? Imagine that but the whole entire test. It was a life changing exam...
I have no idea how there are so many good reviews on his page. The course was extremely messy... I have never learned so little from UBC teaching staff. I had to teach myself the majority of the content from this class. Some of the content tested is not even taught in any of the assigned material. Also, EXTREMELY unclear expectations.
super engaging and funny professor. midterm was signficantly easier than the final, but it is possible to do decently in both if you stay up-to-date on content and put in the time.
If you find the class funny you have NPC humor, had to go to office hours MINIMUM once a week, midterm was fine but final had terribly worded questions, doesn't give notes to force you to go to class (which I went to all lectures and still struggled), he seems like a nice guy but I had to teach myself everything
Tim is a funny guy and his lectures are quite entertaining. This class is very test heavy though. You must do well on the midterm because the final was absolutely brutal. None of the material he gave you to study was on the final but at least he scales the exams a lot.
He taught me how to win the lottery, which was by far the most useful thing I learned in this course. He is also pretty funny and overall a nice guy, and he also releases grades quickly 😀 However, the final was notably harder than in-class content; I often zoned out during lectures because of how easy they were, and wish he covered harder problems
Great. Always give to curve the midterm and final grade.
Incredible prof
Tim is a great guy and is very qualified; his lectures are engaging and helpful. If you pay attention, you will do well. Exams can be difficult, but if you do well on the practice, you shouldn't do too badly.
Tim is awesome! Lectures were engaging and informative. He provides lots of practice opportunities both in and out of class. The content can be a bit confusing at first, but he sets you up for success. I had never used Excel before this course and I did just fine.
Tim is really cool and managed to turn pretty boring material into fun lectures, including some legendary ones. Not a super hard course but beware of the final as that's what gets most people (59% avg). There's only enough material for about half a semester so lots of cancelled lectures.
