Greatest teacher ever man!!! you gotta take him.. His explanations on examples are extremely helpful which plays major role having a sucessful class. His attitude is very nice towards students. I"m always looking forward to his class.
dosent know how to teach and makes the easy problems really complicated. not bad but BC has better teachers than him.
OK teacher, although makes the rather simple problems go through pointless titieous steps, when you can just use a shortcut.tests and quizes are straightfoward no tricks or anything and basically tells you what is going to be on them
He uses different colors in class to show his exact steps in solving equations/etc, which is very helpful to see. calc 1 is pretty easy with him, and he drops your worst test AND quiz grade at the end of the quarter. Grades quickly and is always available for help
He is a good teacher, sometimes reluctant to answer dumb questions (he does this subtly though, it is not rude). I pretty much stopped doing the homework and I am going to get an A in this class. Not the best, but just fine for these lower calc levels. Pay attention in class and you will do fine, he pretty much gives you the test the day before.
This math class was my first math class in 6 years, so I had a rough start in the beginning. It took me a while to figure out my key to success in this class. My suggestion is to do both the strongly suggested&extra problems. Know how to use your calculator because he uses it ALOT & how to graph things although he does not assign graphing on hwks.
Mr. Kearney is a great professor. He has many awards and recognition for math in foreign countries. Unlike many people in the math field he is sympathetic to other's problems w/ it. Take him!Book needed for practice not class. Color codes the steps on the board to make it easier on the eyes and more clear.Willing to help students whenever possible.
Mr. Kearney is a great math professor. Gredes are based off of tests and quizzes; however he drops your lowest quiz score and lowest test score. Homework is not required, but it helps a lot if you do it. Lectures are given in class daily; they are easy to understand, and if you ever have a question, Mr. Kearney will gladly do a few example problems
He's nice and pretty good teaching. He teaches the basics but doesn't teach you the harder problems. Sometimes he skips stuff that you need to know. Overall ok. Really picky with test will. Doc if you don't round or have units. Does not give you points for how close you are to answer.
He's a GREAT teacher! He loves to color code so it's really helpful when you're jotting down notes. He's VERY thorough and he goes over hw questions. He makes practice tests that are just like the tests so you are never thrown off on the day of the test. He's very approachable, laid back, and nice. TAKE HIS CLASS! You won't regret it.
this class was ok, he's not a bad teacher but he takes random stuff off when grading.
He takes random points off of tests and often doesn't let you know why. His lectures are EXTREMELY boring and his method of color-coding takes way too long. Those 50 minutes each day felt like hours. However, the notes from his lectures were helpful when doing the homework and he tells you exactly what'll be on each quiz and test the day before.
Not the best math teacher I've had at BC but he wasn't bad. His teaching style is clear and goes over all the steps, no matter how obvious, which makes it helpful if you need the quick review. He gives you practice tests/quizzes that make it exactly clear what will be on the tests. Do the homework on time, even though its not graded.
This prof blows. His lectures are boring, he messes up half of his examples and takes the entire class time figuring out what he did wrong. The other half of the time is spent taking off and putting back on the caps to his stupid refillable pens. I learned more from a 40 minute tutoring session than I did from a week of lectured from this guy.
He is awful!!! Do not take him. Takes random stuff off when grading. I learned more from online YouTube videos. He doesn't teach anything and only gives you examples....find a better teacher please!
Don't know why people are saying Kearney's a bad prof. He explained everything pretty well in class, but the textbook was really helpful because I hadn't taken Pre-Calculus but still went with Calculus I. I really appreciated that the homework was not mandatory, but helped immensely with my understanding of the material.
He is a joke in my opinion. Is kind of rude to the students when they ask what to him may be an obvious question. Really picky about certain things on the test most would not be.
I don't get why people are so down on him. While I can understand why the class could get boring for many, it seems like he does a good job making sure the class understands the concepts. Super easy homework.
Kearney was great! Best math prof I've had at BC so far. He is a cross the t's dot the i's kind of person with his lectures which I found to be extremely helpful. His personality is also really funny and he has some interesting stories. I'd definitely take another course of his!
This guy was a joke. He took off random stuff on quizzes and tests for ALOT of points! Although he was very clear in his lecutres, however many times, his lectures skipped ALOT in the homework and in the book, so when you go to do the hw, you get lost. I wasn't too hpy with him.
I never write anything on this site, but i want people to know what they're getting into with this guy. He's not a clear teacher. I ended up only going to class for tests and teaching myself. Once i did that my grade shot up. He was more confusing than helpful and his over use of calculators is insane!
Definitely has a different personality but is very clear in his lectures. No homework, just quizzes and tests. They usually follow his lectures accordingly but occasionally he throws in curveballs. The tests are usually harder than the quizzes.
Best math professor at BC. He is super clear and very straight to the point. His tests and quizzes are tough but doable. He also loves to answer questions and walk you step by step through problems.
Tim is weird and his class is boring, but it's easy to get a good grade as long as you come to class and take his practice tests and basically know his particular way of doing things. Ask lots of questions on missed points so you know exactly how he likes your work laid out.
Kearney is extremely intelligent, he knows what he's talking about and will make you a better mathematician no matter what. Your algebra skills by the end of his class will be amazing. He's very approachable and will help you. However, he does grade rather hard. Make sure everything is PERFECT. I'm taking him for 152, he's a good prof. Take him!
The tests were slightly harder than the practice tests, but he reviewed a lot right before tests. He often made mistakes when doing examples in class and he didn't proof read his tests/practice tests. I often wasted my time trying to figure out if I was wrong or if he was. He always gave us good class notes but I wouldn't take his class again.
Tim is a good teacher, but a terrible grader. If you're used to being an A student in math you might not be as lucky in this class. Make sure you re-count all your points when you get a test back and ask where your points went, he tends to make small mistakes (even in class) but is open to correcting them. Make sure to attend, textbook is horrible.
I had Tim for 151 and 152, he's an amazing teacher. He will help you out and he does want you to succeed. He is a hard grader, but I got an A- in 151 and an A in 152 with him so it's not impossible. When he posts the answer keys, study them religiously. You'll see how he wants your tests to look. Take Kearney, he'll make you a better mathematician.
Very good teacher, would recommend to those taking Math at BC. Posts a large amount of material on the course website. My only warning is to make sure that you have all the material down perfect before you walk into a test, as he will take large amounts of points off for small mistakes.
Mr. Kearney is a good professor, very personable. I would recommend him for calculus to anyone at BC. When you first start his class it takes a little time to adjust: very picky with notation/work on exams, and a bit bland at times. He is very straight forward with his expectations. Study the practice exams and you'll do great!
He is very picky on tests, and takes points off for random reasons. His class usually gets really boring, but he will tell you what's on the test before and will also do a review, which I found helpful. His teaching style might not be as exciting, nor his grading always fair, but if all you want is to understand basic concepts, you should take him.
Like others have said, he can take a little time to get used to. Always felt like I was going in blind to the quiz, but he does practice tests before the exams which make them cake. I learned a lot more than I expected to in this course. Makes a lot of tiny mistakes in class and can be a picky grader. Contest your points and he usually gives in.
Overall, he is good teacher. He is kind. The test and quizz are relatively easy, because it is extreme similar with the practice text. However, just like other said, he is extremely hard on grading, sometimes it does not make any sense. I hope he could change his grading policy.
The worst professor that I have ever had! He doesn't explain things very well at all and if you ask a question he looks at you and responds in a very condescending way. Terrible.
Can be worse. If you want to keep your GPA, get far away from him.
Great prof, he writes super clear notes, teaches how to use your calculator to check your answers. Tests are fair, and I am now in 142, and kicking butt, thanks to his calculator methods
So, I'm only halfway through the class, and I can officially say that this guy is a word I'm not allowed to say on this site. He's a stickler for everything being exactly how HE wants it. He's easily distracted by his stories and he's very unclear in his lectures. Personally, I've fallen asleep in his class everyday and I still do fine on tests.
He's a good teacher and his tests are very easy, but he drones on waaayy too much and gets carried off topic a lot of times, but he occasionally tries to crack a joke, which usually ends up being epic fail (although some of them are admittedly funny). After a while you get used to him, but I feel that he could change his style a bit to be better.
The worst teacher I have ever met. You probably will get a not-bad score, but when you look back, you will find that you learned nothing. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE.
His class isn't that bad, but I wouldn't take again. His grading is frustrating at times (I got every answer on a test right once and still came away with an 84...) and his lectures are occasionally a little disjointed. He does, however, give very good test and quiz reviews the day prior.
Stay away from this teacher. Don't screw yourself up. I took Math 151 with him...he is the worst teacher I had in my school life. Don't take him! if you are already registered, you better drop it...!
He is a bad teacher. While students made a little error, he made a lot more error. He always say "do not dangle" and minus our score if we do, even though it is just a simple carelessness. He try to be funny but always make a lame joke. Bad teacher.
He is an ok teacher. He doesn't explain until the review day but that is too fast of explaining. He does say lame jokes, but they are only funny if you have never heard them before. Attendance is only mandatory if you want to learn something which is rarely. It is better off you take help from Math lab and read the book, if you want to succeed. GL
Mr. Kearney is a friendly man. He just is not that good at teaching math. Rather then explain step by step he just does it on the board and expects you to follow. No one in the class talks. He goes quickly and does not do a good job re-explaining for people who are lost.
Odd in an almost socially awkward kind of way but a very nice guy. Very tough grader and I lost points for small errors - but that only made me want to work harder and improve myself. Lectures were somewhat rushed through, so pre-reading the book is recommended. I scraped by with an A-.
Best math teacher I've ever had. Just pay attention and take good notes of his lectures. He has been teaching a long time and knows his stuff. He shows you how to take advantage of the calculator. I got a 4.0 without much effort. Just apply yourself and listen.
For dude and chick out there who want to keep your GPA competitive, avoid this teacher. I already took five quarters in BC and I only get a B and rest of my courses are all straight A except an A-. Guess what, the only B I got is from this class. This teacher is awful but a good person. Find a good teacher to give yourself a chance to succeed!!
My god he is the most insane grader ever. He'll give a problem 15 points and even though uve got the majority of the process correct and only made a small mistake to give u a wrong answer, you lose ALL points! This is unbelievable. I studied really hard and went in confident but left the next day with an F.
Homework and attendance are not required for this class. The grade is 30% quizzes 40% tests and 30% final. He does drop the lowest test and quiz scores. His lectures are clear, he writes everything on the bored and explains as he goes. He expects you to know Algebra and Precalc skills but will do a brief overview if someone is lost. Would recommend.
He is very sweet but absolutely not a good teacher. Its literally dead silence in the class, no one talks, he just goes through problems on the board and thats it. no interaction. not to mention his test are incredibly hard. He does give out practice quizzes and tests but he only posts them the day before the exam!
We never use the textbook, the tests and quizzes are based on his notes. He tells you exactly what will be on tests or quizzes, and you get to drop on test and one quiz. His quizzes don't have many questions but are worth like 20 points each so its very easy to lose points because he's a picky grader.
First of all, don't even bother to buy a textbook for this class because he never used it.He is a really nice person, but he has no heart in teaching whatsoever. You don't really need to show up in class to learn but MAKE SURE you show up the day before the test or quiz. He grade quizzes/test extremely HARSH, and make sure to label all the unit.
Mr Kearney is a great person and has countless amazing stories, but he is just not a good teacher. He just has a paper, writes some formulas on the board, a few examples and done. By far one of the most confusing classes I've ever been in, actually considering dropping it.
He's a nice person... but as a teacher I would not recommend him. Can't hear him in class at all and he never uses the textbook so don't waste your money! He also just assumes everyone already knows how to do certain math mechanics that he should be teaching.
He does not teach you about math, he only teach his students how to use calculator. Buy the calculator he recommended or you will have a hard time following his lectures in this Calculator 151 class.
Cool guy, do not take him unless you plan on going to the math lab or having someone really explain calculus 1. His not bad as a person did curve the grade a bit. But I still dont know calc 1 as i should
not the worst but not great
This person was more interested in showing how to make the operations on the calculator work rather than show how to understand the process of solving an equation. Lectures were very confusing at times and many other students complained that he needed to stay on topic. Don't take this person unless you are VERY confident in your math skills.
He's extremely hard to follow at times and doesn't follow the textbook all that much. It's possible to do well if you study hard but don't count on him for help.
This teacher is super nice, super easy grader and it is a super fun class. He is the best math teacher I have ever had, he changed the way I live my life. This class changed my life.
This teacher is the best teacher at BC. He knows how to teach, and any student is lucky to have Tim as a teacher. He made this class super easy, and it was super easy to follow and the tests were easy enough where you could ace them. I have never been good in math, but Tim made it so I could pass this class with an A.
He is probably the best teacher at BC.
honestly such a good teacher. he has a really good structure to his lecture- he gives the objective and then does a ton of practice problems right after. also on the day of a quiz or test, he will review with you first before you take it which really really helps! no homework and he offers a ton of extra credit!
This guy. Plugs in his TI-83 into an overhead projector, and does the examples in the reading, FOR TWO HOURS. Those are the only problems that come up in lecture unless you ask. This is if you manage not to lose it, after having to stare at the overhead projector on the whiteboard, for almost TWO HOURS. No pedagogical skill whatsoever. Do not take.
Kearney is unreasonable. He gives no partial credit on quizzes or tests. His lectures are long and confusing. There are times when he lectures where he gets confused with his own examples and makes mistakes. He relies on the calculator way too much and that makes his long lectures even more painful. Don't take him unless you're confident in math.
My God this guy is such a jerk. It's obvious he's bitter about his life, and he takes out his bitter feelings on his students. He grades hard. If you ask him a question he is condescending and a jerk about it. I've learned more teaching myself concepts than sitting in his lame lectures- so looking at examples from the textbook is key to passing.
Don't take him for Math 151ever! He's not a good teacher at all, in my opinion. He uses a textbook in which the majority of the problems don't relate to what he's teaching us. Second of all, the problems for his quizzes and tests are worth too many points. He doesn't teach the material properly so others can understand. He is also so rude!!
Lectures are confusing. He even gets confused with his own examples which means he erases the board a lot while teaching, making it hard to understand what should be written in the notes. He is very intelligent but expects everyone to have everything memorized as well. Practice tests are easier than the actual tests making tests too difficult.
He was the worst math professor I have ever had. Horrible and extremely difficult test. 90% of your time on class is to focus on calculator.
honestly a good teacher. his lectures are straightforward- he teaches you the topic and then does a ton of examples after. also he studies with you right before a quiz or test that SAME DAY he's giving it, like goes over EVERYTHING so the info is still fresh in your head when he gives you the test or quiz.
He's OK not the worst but he's not great either. His lectures are OK, but he can get confused with his own examples making the lectures hard to follow at times. His exams are tough, and he grades them really harshly. He does post practice exams which can be helpful but tend to be easier than the actual exam! Do not take him if math is hard for you.
He is so confusing. He can't answer his own examples and kept adjusting the problem which is obviously copied from the book. He discuss random stuff and makes a big deal about FRENCH WORDS. Make sure practice the practice testquiz coz it helps you alot for the incoming quizzes. Make sure ask questions on your quiz results, he can give you credits.
He's not the best teacher, but he's not the worst. His tests and quizzes are really tough (I got at least B on only 2 of the assessments), but if you do homework daily, pay attention (which can be hard to do), do the practice tests and final (DO THE PRACTICE FINAL! It really helps. I got an 98.7% on the actual exam.), and study, you should be fine.
Not a great teacher but OK. Lectures are long and confusing and require a lot of effort to pay attention to in order to learn the material. So if you need to, look at the text book and go to the math lab for help. Do the practice tests and the practice final he posts-they help you do well on exams. And take advantage of any extra credit he offers.
He will deduct points for any possible reason. I love math but hated his class
I would never take his class again. His lecture is long and boring, always focus on calculator stuff. He uses a lot of examples to explain the concepts but always are confusing. I still get an A in his class as I learnt similar stuff before, but I WOULD NOT recommend you to take his class if you want an easy A.
I would strongly suggest any other professor. The real problem with him is the random criteria he uses for tests. One single small error will result in you getting a B or C. Get two errors and you get even lower scores. You need to get everything correct... The system does not reward knowledge, it is just poorly designed and very punitive.
Very disappointing. He certainly messed up my GPA.
Unclear grading criteria. Worst teacher at BCC.
Hardest math teacher I have ever had. Lots of self-studying required.
Hardest class I've ever taken. I'm usually a pretty good math student, but in this class my grades went down. Had to do a lot of self studying, and when I thought I'd understood the concept, I'd be thrown off by the test. Tests are difficult, and he always gives the hardest problems. He takes off points for the tiniest things. Wouldn't recommend.
I did not enjoy my time in this class and would not take another course by this teacher. The curriculum was not too difficult, but the way that it was taught made it harder. than it needed to be. Tim constantly hurried through his lectures while barely answering questions, and had very little time or care to help you after class.
I really enjoyed math before taking this course. Tim's teaching style is very confusing and people are constantly having to correct his work. The tests are hard and his grading system makes absolutely no sense. I will most likely have to retake this class with someone else.
Awful teacher, couldn't teach for his life. Horrible influence, talks about useless irrelevant things
His grading criteria is confusing. Taking the whole points off minor mistakes. He seems nice but judges people by accents.
Tim is a good teacher. He makes it very easy to learn the material. I literally didn't do a homework problem outside class beyond test review. Gives tons of examples and all but gives you the questions he asks on the tests and quizzes. Always a review day before either a test or a quiz. You feel very comfortable asking questions. Take his class
He's alright. I wouldn't take another class by him again though. Teaches through examples and provides review days prior to quizzezs/tests. What really got me though was his grading system. He took off many points for extremely minor things.
This class requires you to do a lot of work by yourself. He will give you help if you want it or need it. But he won't be like the teachers in high school. This is college.
Not the best. not the worst!
Tim gives lots of examples and does reviews before tests and quizzes, but most of the time they don't make sense and aren't explained well. These are the only things in the gradebook and only have a few questions on them, so if you miss one problem, you'll get a C or D. He also uploads practice tests, and then doesn't include an answer key.
Tim is a nice teacher. This class is easy to get an A. He gives us two drops, if you do not do great on your quiz and test, you can drop it. Nice teacher ever!
Tim is a very nice professor. We don't have midterm, and it's easy to get A.
Inaccessible outside of class, questions were not welcomed during class
Sir Tim was nearly impossible to reach outside of class, believe me, I TRIED! There was a tough test and quiz with each chapter and they were the only things in the grade book. If math does not come easy, I do not recommend
Tim is very smart, but would do so much better applying his knowledge anywhere outside of teaching. He does nothing but show examples on the board, and doesn't explain what he's doing so it never makes sense. Is very condescending when people ask questions. He'll mark your answers down for the smallest things when there's only 4 questions anyway.
Class can be a little boring, but if you already know Algebra well and passed Alg 2 in high school, you will do just fine. Homework is not graded, and he puts practice tests and quiz keys on CANVAS. We always have review days before quizzes and tests and they are never on a Monday. Worst test and quiz scores are dropped at the end of the quarter.
the only thing he doesn't care is about you learning, 3 tests and 4 quizzes all it counts in his class. very tough grader, takes point off very easily and most of the times for no reason which you would have to tell him to give those point back. please if you have an option don't take any class with him if you care about your GPA .
Basically took the class to teach myself
Doesn't actually teach anything as to why or what you're doing, just looks at his notes in his hands all class and writes on the board like a chicken with it's head cut off. He may know what he's teaching - but not well enough to engage the class and make sure they know what he's teaching. Literally the worst math teacher I've had; and I love math.
This man is straight WHACK. He doesn't teach, all he does is stare at the white board and write down examples. Which he doesn't even explain. And after every example he gives he says, and I quote, "If you cant do it in your head, pick up your calculator." in his monotone ass voice. I hate this man, dropped his class after four days. Do not take.
He does not teach. I did not learn a single thing in this class. I stopped attending class (attendance is optional), spent a lot of time with the textbook and in math lab, and only showed up on review days/test days. He gives a couple of extra credit opportunities, there's no homework so your grade relies on tests, he makes fun of "dumb" questions.
I personally found his explanations confusing so I relied on the book and google heavily. He sometimes can be patronizing when answering questions, so I didnt go to his office hours. He tended to go on some tangents unrelated to class. I did appreciate the lack of graded homework + dropped lowest test score.
I understand peoples complaints about this professor. However, if you show up to class, make sure you understand how to do the problems, then the test will be easy. He always goes over the content of test before hand, however you must show up for lectures. If you skip or rely on book, the test will be confusing, and that determines your whole grade
If I had a dollar for every time this man said "If you can't do it in your head, use a calculator!" He teaches by doing examples and his examples are very bad and hard to understand. He never asks anyone for clarification and I see many of my classmates frustrated daily. I will never take this teacher again and I recommend everyone to avoid him.
If you like learning math through examples, then Tim is a great choice. If you don't like learning math through examples, it's a good idea to pick a different teacher.
All of your grades are just tests and quizzes. If you get two bad grades you have to spend the rest of the quarter making them up. He drops your lowest test and quiz scores. Attendance is only mandatory on test and quiz days. He clearly lines out all of the quizzes but is a harsh grader (e.g. marks off not drawing models to scale, doesn't tell you)
his lecture is a bit confusing specially he makes a lot of mistakes while writing on whiteboard which makes things more confusing. I like the drop exam/quiz part and homework are not graded. test questions are relatively easy. it's similar to the examples that he writes. so attending class plus paying attention to him will make you nail that A.
Easiest instructor you can get. You can just skip classes and only show up to review days and still pass. He prepares you really really well for the quizzes and tests. Lots of extra credits too. Very nice and friendly. However, his teaching is very boring. All he does is write examples so on the board and never explains something anything to you.
He is the best professor ever. Just go to class, write down his examples & you'll be good to go for his exams. He is a brillant professor who cars about his students. He also color codes his examples which makes it easy to follow. By far the best math professor ever!
Lectures are borderline useless, he explains almost every everything in a "you should know this" kind of way. His tests are poorly formatted and very hard, and viciously graded. make one small mistake and you get -8 on a 10 point question.
Tim is a very good guy and very personable. He likes to chat with his students. He is a very experienced teacher and knows his stuff, he messes up often but he fixes his mistakes. I would definitely take Tim again.
He makes so many mistakes while doing his work, always uses the calculator, and doesn't explain the reasoning or logic behind the math we are doing. If students ask him to explain a concept for clarity purposes, he becomes almost inaudible and just points to a couple variables on the whiteboard. If you want white hairs, this is the profesor for you
the best thing i like about him, examples that he gives in his lectures are the same will come in the test, just changing numbers. which made this class fairly easy. BUT he grades for few things so be careful. don't skip class and you will do fine. btw he can give you some points back if you talk to him after getting your paper
Takes a day to explain a new concept, spends several days running examples on the concept, tests on the concept. Pretty straightforward. Don't miss those explanation days! Inadvertently can get dismissive so don't get shaken; ask him specific questions: Don't say "#4" say "on #4 where did you get 2Pi/3?" Be vocal! And MEMORIZE THE UNIT CIRCLE!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! He is a dull talker, makes mistakes constantly that must be caught by the students or he won't realize&I honestly don't think he knows the information. The grade is based off of 7 grades-3 quizzes 3 tests&the final. Examples in class are easy, test ?'s way harder. Worst teacher I have ever had.
Kearney moves slow (which is good) & loves to tell stories. Quiz's and exams are the only things graded. lowest score of one quiz & one test are dropped. Homework isn't mandatory & the practice packets are exactly what to expect on tests and quiz's, just with different numbers. Tough grader; one problem on a test could be 30 pts, u must be thorough
I honestly don't understand all the bad reviews for Tim. He's the nicest man I've ever met and his teaching style is so easy to understand. He gives clear and concise examples for every possible problem. You have to be very thorough on the tests, and not make silly mistakes otherwise you get docked points. But thats not necessarily bad imho.
He is the nicest teacher. I took his math 141 and 151. when everyone got bad scores on exam1. he changed the assignment score from 2 to 10. the assignments are really easy, everyone could get full credit. so we can improve our overall grade. I got 93 when I suppose to get 89. also he will drop one quiz and one exam.
Mr Kearney is a great math teacher. He is very helpful and friendly outside of class. People may comment on his mistakes that he makes during lectures, but he always catches them. They are helpful in a way, keeps u engaged. Quiz and test reviews are super helpful. Ask questions, speak up , do your work , and you'll be fine
Professor Kearney is an amazing math teacher. His teaching style helped me learn easily and quickly. There are 4 quizzes and 3 tests, one of each are dropped. There is online homework but it is optional. As for the quizzes and tests, he makes study guides that show you exactly what will be on the quiz or test. Overall a great teacher!
Great Math teacher, unique and funny personality. There are drops for quizzes and tests. Test and quizzes reviews are also given out.
For someone that sucks at math, Kearney was not helpful at all. Be prepared to teach yourself! All he does is stand at the front of the room and write down the problems from the book, lecturing in the most monotonous voice. Attendance isnt required, so I suggest you learn the material on your own and just show up for tests/quizzes and review days.
Tim was a great teacher! He was very clear about what to expect, always willing to answer questions and meet during his office hours, and very humble about his mistakes. By the end of the quarter, I felt like I really understood the content, and with the extra credit, I ended up with an A in the class! I would definitely take him again .
he goes off on tangents. Had a hard time explaining material, and being concise. Writes all his examples clearly which is helpful but very slow, and doesnt take much time to explain things
Please avoid him
Writes everything out clearly, takes you step by step. Often goes off on unnecessary tangents that direct time away from course material. Slightly difficult for testing, but lowest quiz and test scores are dropped. Extra credit is provided by not often and not much.
absolutely loved Sir Tim! I'm sad he isn't teaching math 142 next quarter, he is very nice and tests are very very similar to practice tests. talks pretty fast in class, but if you do the MyMath Lab homework it'll be a breeze, even though the homework is optional. gives extra credit problems on tests which is great for your grade!! recommend 10/10
His teaching style really did not work for me at all. Breezes through random examples without really explaining the logic behind anything. His tests always have 2-3 paragraphs of text at the top that's just confusing. He uses * + and @ symbols to give expectations of your answers. Things seems to make sense in his head, but not in mine.
While Tim is a nice guy, unfortunately he isn't a very good professor. His method of grading makes no sense, as he docks you massive points for very minute mistakes (even if the end result is correct). Spends half the class on his calculator. Very uninspiring as he just stands there and does problems on the whiteboard. Exams always have mistakes.
Satisfactory professor at best. Just does examples for the duration of class, no explanations, and then plops away at his calculator. That being said, he will dock you for everything on exams. Also while his exams looked similar to the practice exams he gave out, the final was very different from the final review he gave. Below average prof.
Gives example problems the whole class. Practice tests help. Do the homework, although the level of the homework is clearly easier then the actual test problems. Take good notes and be self motivated to study on your own.
Hard grader. Doesnt really teach just gives examples and hw. Exams are harder then practice hw and tests.
He spends the whole time "double-checking" and plugging things into his calculator. He wastes time using 6 pens on every problem. This class is only helpful if you do not know how to use a calculator. He reteaches everything you learned in Algebra but makes it way more confusing. Retaught us 'midpoint' but never gave us the formula...
Hes a nice guy but his whole class time consists of taking notes which he solves the problems wrong most of the time and very difficult and confusing way. He goes off on tangents a lot, barely went to his class because the textbook helps the best. Felt like a self taught class. Only grades off of quizzes and tests, nothing else.
Sir Tim was usually pretty nice and often had interesting stories, but as a teacher I wouldn't take him again. His biggest flaw was that he just wouldn't help students. I asked him if he would help me through a problem that I missed on a test, and he just looked at me and said "didn't we cover this in class"? With hard work I was able to get an A.
Sir Tim relies heavily on the graphing calculator, so if you are uncomfortable with using one, his class is not the one for you. There were times where students would ask what we were doing when we were plugging numbers into the calculator with no reply. If you do the homework, you should be successful. His practice tests and quizzes are useful!!
This class was okay and if you work hard you can do well. However, class is spent almost entirely on copying problems from the board which often had errors. Otherwise, he goes off on odd tangents. Graded items consisted of quizzes and tests. He would often make me feel stupid for asking questions. The practice quizzes and tests were nice though.
Get ready for a bunch of self-teaching! While his teaching methods are questionable, he really cares! He makes sure to use class time wisely; changing pen colors at random, and re-checking his mistakes. He not only uses the white board to teach, but he uses examples from his personal life too! I look forward to Sir Tim's class every day. G8 guy
If you suffer from anxiety prior to CALC tests, he is the best teacher for you! He gives prep tests and quizzes and it helps a lot. Do the prep work and the homework and you will get a good grade. Also, he is a really nice teacher!
Your grade is based on 4 quizzes, 3 tests and he drops the lowest of each, plus a final exam. Attendance is optional so i dont go and just go to the math lab & learn everything on the practice tests which are identical to the real tests. HW is only counted if it helps your grade. Its real straightforward. Take him if you have time to teach yourself
I learned a lot with him. You do have to do homework, but his tests and quizzes are not long at all. He provides you with pre-quizzes and pre-tests that prepare you for the real ones. He teaches you a lot about testing your answers in the calculator. He may mistakes in class, but you get used to follow him and pay close attention to his lectures
I'll write you some really honest reviews and tips and my experience with other reviews. 1. Prepared to teach yourself. 2. Go to class to check where are we. 3. He will give you a practice quiz, exams which are VERY similar to the actual one. (which mean if you know how to do all of the practices, you are good to go) 5. please study by your self.
He was and is honestly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He barely understands the concepts himself and definitely does not know how to teach them. If I were you, I would not take his class.
He gives out practice quizzes and tests which are exactly like the actual quiz/test. Easy class if you do the practice stuff and look at his answer keys.
Tim was one of the best math teachers I've had. He gives lots of examples in class, which really helped me learn. He is a tough grader, but I got used to his grading really quick. He also drops the lowest quiz grade AND lowest test grade, and gives practice tests/quizzes that are almost identical to the tests, so he sets you up for success.
I don't understand all those negative reviews. Tim is awesome, caring and tells you exactly what you need to know. He goes through all examples slowly, color codes everything, his practice tests are very similar to the actual ones. I think students that complain about him are just not ready for college. I'd love to take his class again.
He gives you practice quiz/exam, which is exactly the same as real ones. Also, on his practice problem, he tells you what is going to be on the test. This makes it super easy to pass the class. So, DO THE PRACTICE TEST! The homework is super easy, you will get 100%. However, he is tough grader on quiz and test. And FREE online "textbook" given.
Tim does his job well. He shows us, explains Calculus in understandable terminology, and provides tests/quizzes that are reasonable. He doesn't surprise you with anything which is super nice. He may not be the most involved, but his teaching style is clear and effective. If you do the homework and practice, you will get an A. He grows on you.
Avoid. Tim is a nice enough guy, but not a good teacher. His version of teaching is just writing a problem on the board rushing through it and not even explaining what he's doing. His version of explaining is just plugging the problem into the calculator. Tests are harder than practice exams.
I have taken Calculus 2 before and failed because the teacher could not explain well enough and I believe was not fair. Mr. Kearney is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. HIs tests and quizzes are exactly like how he teaches the problems in class. He does grade tough, but this is because he makes it easy. He is great.
Students that are naturally good at math will do very well in this class. If you struggle, you will need to use the book/youtube to master all of the concepts in addition to showing up to every class and doing all the homework on time.
Extreemly tough grader. Not at all comprimising on grades. Marks down a lot of points for small errors. Not willing to talk to about grades. Not very helpful. I would defenity not reccomend taking this class
If you get him to like you, he won't take off as many points for small mistakes than others. To do this, ask questions about his son and if you go went to Issaquah High School, you can find some similarities. He doesn't care if you skip class but he also doesn't put his notes up online. He also explains things terribly so be ready to teach yourself
He is terrible at teaching and often times students will have to correct him or he will realize that he messed up the whole problem after everyone wrote it down. This class is super easy compared to high school pre-calc but the material is easy to teach yourself using the textbook. Also, the practice tests are exactly like the tests/quizzes.
Terrible terrible teacher. Lectures are so boring and he doesn't explain anything. All he does is example problems. The practice tests are exactly the same as the actual tests. Not kind at all. Extreemly harsh grader. Takes off points for the stupidest of things. Takes off way more points than is necessary. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Sir Tim is a great guy, but an ok math teacher. His analogies are priceless and will likely stay in my head for the rest of my college years. However, his class is based around self-sufficiency. If you can teach yourself a topic that he can't teach you, then you're golden. WAMAP is super useless and textbook work is non-existant.
Not a good teacher, mostly due to his constant careless errors in his work. He wouldn't catch them and the students would have to point it out or else be confused. He also graded very unfairly, docking 10+ points for small things on tests. A group of us talked to him a few times saying our grades don't reflect our knowledge, but he didn't listen.
Mr. Kearney is an amazing professor. His lectures can get a little bit confusing in the beginning but he always elaborates and does many example questions and then it's easy to pick up on the concepts. There is barely any homework and the quizzes/tests are almost exact copies of the study guide. He's definitely one of the stronger math profs at BC.
He doesn't give homework and a lot of the class relies on you self-teaching yourself concepts and studying off of his practice tests/quizzes (that are exactly like the actual tests and quizzes). If you think you have pre calc foundations down and want to get this class over with to go into higher math, this is the prof for you!
He doesn't have homework and grades are all quizzes and exams. He does occasionally give extra credit opportunities. Before quizzes and exams he has an in class review day and study guides where he assigns problems that are extremely similar to those on the test. Overall, very chill dude
Tim wastes half the class rambling about his life and his stories. He has no idea how to teach and it feels like hes learning the material as hes teaching it in the moment. Almost every single day, students have to correct HIM because he messes up on every problem. Extremely tough grader, and unless you really hate yourself, I dont recommend him
Tim is not a good online teacher. His zoom teaching way wasn't a professional way at all. All the graded work used to be graded by the system on MyMathLab which is not fair at all. Tim doesn't seem to be caring. His answers were so brief and sometimes not helpful. I was so disappointed taking his class. Don't take him if you care about your grade!
Take this class if youre good at teaching yourself new concepts. Professor Kearney is not very organized when explaining problems, and is often hard to understand through a Zoom call. Dont take this class if youre expecting to be taught clearly.
I took Tim's class in Winter 2018. I have learning disabilities, so the slow pace of his lectures was an absolute gift. He tells details and anecdotes that were great for me; they put concepts into context and kept my attention. Lots of homework, and lots of help!! Always happy to open his office. He's lovely to work with on DRC accommodations.
Taking Tim as my Calculus I professor as a college freshman didn't give me a whole lot to work with as far as experience. But after almost a whole quarter completed with him I can say that he does a pretty solid job as far as online learning goes. I feel that if it were to be in an actual classroom environment the lectures would be more bearable.
Do yourself a favor and take the class with a different teacher. Basically taught myself the entire course. Students had to correct his work often during the class, and it didn't really seem like he knew what he was doing. He overexplains simple concepts and moves way too fast through the more complex ones.
Tim is super nice. When I needed help he was totally available to call me on zoom which was super helpful! You may have to teach yourself some topics but his grading is fair and willing to accommodate to you!
As long as you get familiar with homework, quizzes, and tests for each chapter you should be ok with learning things and getting a good grade.
Terrible terrible teacher. Was not helpful at all in explaining grades or helping with assignments. The exams are just like the practice ones but he grades extremely hard. Wouldn't recommend.
Tim was my first Math professor at BC. His 151 class was really easy and understandable. He is a very caring teacher and would literally give you free points or some way to get back the points you loosed through some HW. He gives a lot of extra credits and is always on the students side.
He is a good teacher, he does make some mistakes in his lectures but overall gives you everything you need to pass the class. If you need help he is always accessible during office hours or by appointment. He gives hw with a lot of questions as well as practice quizzes/tests that reflect the test. If you do the work and ask questions its an easy A.
BEST MATH PROF EVER he simplified hard topics and made it super easy to understand. Gives a ton of calculator tips & tricks. Quizzes, 3 tests, 1 final exam Super easy homework due on test day. Gives practice quizzes, tests and exam and then makes that the real thing. Gives details about what will be on the test. Can redo some qs on the test TAKEHIM
Sir Tim was one of the best math teachers I've had in a LONG time! I was nervous as a high school student taking a college course but Sir Tim made the class as easy as possible and maintained a kind composure while we worked online. I wish we had class in person cause I can tell he would've been awesome in person!
Don't trust the good reviews. This class is absolutely horrible. He changed the class last minute to online. Lectures only reflect 40% of the homework. Requires you to submit pictures of your work for tests yet doesn't even give partial credit. Unclear about literally everything. Passive aggressive responses. Worst class I've ever taken.
Really clear instruction and textbook website based. The homework and optional test reviews precisely reflect the assessments, so its a pretty easy A- I had a few lazy moments, so I skipped a couple of homework assignments, but it doesnt hurt your grade as long as you ace the tests/quizzes. He drops your lowest test and quiz grade, which is nice!
100% the worst professor I've ever seen. His entire "class" was him posting notes that provided no explanation, review or help at all. No lecs, no help, nothing. He was inaccessible throughout the quarter, and the times he would reach out to his students, would be littered with typos. Only 9 of 31 students actually took his final for a reason.
This teacher made class so stressful. The 4 exams count for a huge portion of your grade and he gives you hardly enough time to complete them. Also, he is very bad at explaining concepts and simply does problems without explaining what he's doing so you are extremely unprepared and have to do a lot of studying on your own outside of class.
I think Professor Kearney was amazing. I have never enjoyed a math class quite like I enjoyed taking his class. He explains the concepts clearly, and then shows examples on how to do them. Then before each test, he gives out a practice packet that is pretty much exactly the same as the upcoming test, just the numbers are different.
He made it difficult to get an A. He's a picky grader and doesn't fully explain his steps when teaching. Your grade is mostly based on tests and quizzes which he gives very similar practice tests/quizzes beforehand.
The reason I put hilarious is because this class is a joke. He posts reviews for the test that have totally different material from what we actually are studying. The first test, the class averaged a 64%, median score was a 62, and when I brought this up to him over email, he brushed it off as everyone not paying attention. Passive-aggressive af.
The guy's brain quite literally 404 errors twice each class, struggles with simple arithmetic Patrick the Starfish could figure out
Don't take this professor. Math is about practice. Learn the principal, then practice it over & over. In good classes, you get a lot of practice problems & MOST IMPORTANTLY the practice problems are harder than the the test. This professor reverses it. No practice problems (looked them up myself) & then makes the test questions harder than the HW.
As someone who isn't a strong math student I appreciate that Tim teaches math in a consistent way. He gives out practice quizzes and tests that are a good preview of what to expect, and it all matches up nicely on the quizzes, and tests. He generously allows students to drop, one quiz, one test, and four homework assignments from their final grades
Don't take this class if you don't want to teach yourself the content. Lectures included difficult example problems without explaining much on how to do them. I taught myself 95% of the material using the videos he links in homework assignments taught by someone else. The practice tests and quizzes are super helpful and almost identical to exams.
I've taken his classes twice now, and I like how calm the environment is. It's simple, if you do the homework, practice tests/quizzes, and study an additional 4-5 hours a week you'll pass his class. One thing is he's a really harsh grader, he'll take off points for the smallest things so be careful of that. Besides that, great professor!
When selecting a math class, having a good professor completes half of the job. Sir Tim (he got knighted), was THE BEST professor I have ever had. he made math fun and enjoyable. he was such a calm but straight to the point teacher, with amazing lectures and examples. the tests are pretty easy since he gives a practice test very similar to the test
In my opinion, any person that isn't stupid and willing to put in the work to understand the material will do well in this class. Reviews mentioning tough grading are likely posted by someone who didn't put in the work. Practice quizzes are relevant - study up on those. If you need of a lot of support from the prof, this isn't the class for you.
I loved Sir Tim. I have never done this well in a math class until I had him. He is an older guy, so his teaching style isn't for everyone, but I think simple is better when it comes to math! GO TO OFFICE HRS because he is willing to give you all of his attention and has had such a cool life.
Tim was clear and consistent with his lectures and expectations. The class was organized and straightforward, and you're allowed to drop your lowest quiz, test, and homework grade.
If you already know math well, this class will be easy for you. Sir Tim has a specific approach to teaching that does not suit everyone. I had to turn to tutors in the math lab to catch up with the class. Attendance is not mandatory but you need to do homework online.
Easy class if you study the practice tests! Drops lowest homeworks, quiz, test. All quizzes and tests are directly from the given practice problems. Homework is all due the night before the test. There is extra credit on tests.
I literally went out of my way to make an account and rate this professor because of how bad he is. Absolutely zero point of going to his lectures as you will end up leaving it more lost than you came in. He was also very passive aggressive during office hours as he excepts you to just know everything he teaches.
The class has a specific structure, but with engagement it can work well. Textbooks and homework are key - using unstuck ai alongside other study aids like ChatGPT really helped me stay on top of the material. Overall, an organized course if you put in the effort.
Really good lectures, but I do recommend showing up for a good grade. Everything is homework and lecture based so if you don't do either I gurantee you'll be lost in the sauce. Overall kind man who likes conversation with his students. And he knows what he's talking about.
This professor had issues explaining things when students were confused or wanted more clarifications about lessons. He was a tough grader on tests, the homework was also very different from what he taught in class. And if you didn't keep up with the homework it was very easy to fall behind there was homework everyday.
Prof Kearney is a great professor, goes at a good pace, and is very clear with what will be on tests and quizzes. Do the study guides he makes! He takes the questions on the practice quizzes and tests, and those are the questions on the exams. He sometimes shares stories either relating to math concepts or just sharing about his life.
When you go to his class, this professor makes you more confused about math. He often does the equations wrong, which requires students to ask him to redo them. Never retaking this professor.
Awful grader. Would take points off for the most random things. For example, if I wrote 20000 without commas instead of 20,000 i would be deducted points. Will never take his class again. Does not care about his students at all and grades based on his mood. Never in my life have I seen this harsh of a grader. Do NOT take class with him.
Professor Tim is a solid teacher. He doesn't have the greatest mood at times but he will explain things pretty well. He has 3 tests and 4 quizzes plus final but he drops the lowest score for each. The best thing about Tim is that he has the best review worksheets. As long as you can get down his review worksheets before the tests you will do well
Helped me realize that math can be evil too, and if you haven't learned this lesson yet maybe you should take this class.
Def not the best professor I've had, but, his lectures were adequate/straightforward. I'd say it helped improve my understanding to a significant degree. He's a niceish dude. VERY strict with grading exams. His exam preparation material is elite though, and if you do that, you'll ace the exams. Your math grammar has to be perfect or you lose points
This professor honestly was the best I've ever had in math. If you prefer a more independent, chill class, this is definitely it. Not only does he not require attendance, it's always very clear what material will appear on exams, making it easy to study at home. His tests are forgiving because he always offers a page of extra credit at the back.
Took him for Precalc 1 and Calc 1. All I have to say is that Precalc 1 was pretty easy with him, mostly because i depended on the online material to actually teach me. Practice tests/quiz questions are EXACTLY similar to the real thing so you'll have a great expectation of what'll show up. Don't take him for Calc 1 though.
Professor Tim is a very unforgiving grader so make sure that you pay attention to how he writes his answers on his practice test and quiz as that is what he expects your answers to look like. He spends majority of class solving problems rather than actually teaching and sometimes writes the wrong numbers. Do his practice exams and test repeatedly!
I wouldn't recommend for begginers. Quizzes and tests are heavily graded. The online HW wasn't related to the lessons during the lectures, quizzes and tests. Often times I found that the lessons were confusing and unrelated during quizzes and tests as well as what we were expected to know in order to pass the class.
