He is **** towards white people. I am the only person to get an A in his class for Fall 2002. And even I thought it was hard.
He sucks! he actually advised me to drop the class after we got our first midterms back. i was like "laaaate!" very dry, boring, and i didnt learn a thing..his tests are all essay format..i totally do not recommend him
Very difficult class....... and very boring!!!! Definitely would never take a class of his again!
not that bad as most of the other reviews thought me to believe. his tests are all essay so Its up to you what u like. almost ZERO homework and 1 4 page essay, not too hard. just study and put up wioth the boring lectures and youll get an A
hes ok boring but no homework
Extremely hard class. Expects everyone to be history scholars. Still thinks he is teaching at UC Irvine.
Excellent Instructor. I highly recomment him. His course work is really easy everything(his class lectures) is already posted on his class website for you. All you have to do is participate in class. All his Exams are from Lecture/Powerpoint.
No homework and 3 very hard tests. If you are not a history major, I would not advise you to take this class. He acts like everyone should eat, sleep and breath history. Passing this class is what I imagine boot camp to be like.
tests are very difficult and tests are not all essay based. very little homework. see his website http://www.timmer.org/ for syllabus
If you dont want to do work adn learn anything dont take hiim. I think thats the problem with CC, people dont want to learn just get units. Anyhow his class is very straight forward.Like anythin else, the effort u put in, will be the grade you receive.
if you dont like reading dont go anywhere near this class!! tests are ok if you study hard, little to no homework, and reading is essential. Don't bother asking him for help, he'll confuse you more than help you.
lots of reading and hard tests, you will learn a lot, though. most lectures are dry, but every once in a while he'll spice it up and you won't want to miss it
Very Interesting class same as his History 17B :) This will be the History class to take. Exams are hard but its all very clear considering all Lectures/Exams come from Reading and Powerpoint. Participate and speak up in class and you will do well. Grea
Nice guy...very clear speaker....not afraid to swear in class...really loves history.....presentations and notes presented on Powerpoint....You'll learn a lot from Professor Kelly...great teacher
I hated this class! He enjoys talking a little too much and sometimes goes off lecture topic for random disscussions.Reading is huge in this class,we had two textbooks plus online readings. He acts as if he's the GOD and is not very helpful or fair!
His class was hard but interesting. Expect to write and read a lot. Nice guy.
Professor Kelly is the BEST! His lectures are interesting and thorough, he responds to emails quickly and is an all around nice guy
very considerate and efficient instructor. knows his material. i hate history so its not easy because of workload and boring material but he is a very nice teacher. clear and to the point. responds to emails quickly.
Very hard to get an A, but you'll learn a lot and have fun doing it. He's demanding and grades harshly, but he's fair and a must for history majors who want to transfer to a good school. Great lecturer and snappy dresser. The gem of the department.
He is ridiculously biased, and the class might as well be called Political Science for Liberals. He teaches his opinion as fact, and he makes a lot of politically offensive comments. He never ceases to shock me with the biased things he says and teaches. It is very frustrating and he drives me crazy
(Took Online). Nice guy, thoroughly reasonable. WebCT takes some getting used to, and he uses most of the features.
So boring. (Power point Every day) He is a conservative and a republican. If your a democrat or a liberal dont take it. I love polisci and he basically ruined it for a semester. I will have to wait another semester or even go to a new school.
Very interesting material. Makes History fun. Tests are VERY hard and you will be studying for many hours for midterm/final. Only got a little biased towards end of semester, but not too much. Still, a great guy. Only take if you are serious about history!
The hardest teacher at west valley probably. He is a very intersting teacher, his lectures are very informative but he makes them interesting with powerpoint. Very good teacher but extreamly hard.
Tim is one of the best teachers I have ever taken. He is not easy, but the information you will learn is awesome. Very good lectures and you can get the power points online before class to make them easier to follow. Very good teacher.
Very bad california hisotry teacher. He doesn't know anything about california. All he talkes about is the racial and negative things about california. He never had any positive things to say about the indians.Or the gold mine workers.Do not take this class from him.
Prof Kelly has a very structured teaching style Solid lectures, tons of reading and very difficult quizes and exams. You will learn alot but will work very hard. I met all requirements, studied my but off and got a C. It was quite discouraging.
Kelly is a wonderful instructor. He knows what he's talking about. He does power-point presentations every day, so a lot of notes, but you learn so much! He actually teaches the class like a university, but he's NOT too hard. I wish I could take more classes with him.
Fantastic teacher! Knows loads about California history. Readings and exams are tough 'cuz he teaches it like a university class. You will definitely learn a lot, but be prepared to work. PowerPoints and class web page (with study guides) are very helpful. TAKE THIS TEACHER!
Got a C without opening the text book or reading either of the required novels. He is an excellent teacher with a soft voice. Lose points for being late and tardy so you really want to go to class. Lectures take the whole class period with help from powerpoint. 1/2 of test points come from essays.
Ive read some whining about "Timmer" he was a great teacher. I enjoyed the class alot and to the contrary of other ratings he knows alot about california. I have to take two more history teachers and I'm taking mr. kelly again. Alot of reading but what class doesnt require reading. Don't be a baby.
Mr. Kelly is the best teacher I have ever had! He is strict and the class is very structured, but he is so nice and funny. Be prepared to work in his class because it is college. Contrary to what a person below said he is not a republican. He is actually a conservative deomocrat though not biase
I took him for both 17a & b. He makes it hard to get a good grade, some people might stuggle to even pass his class. I managed a B both semesters by studing my butt off the night before every test. Grading aside he is one of the best History teachers at West Valley. He will teach you a lot...
Very clear with subject matter. Made class interesting with stories and activities (i.e. Mock Congress). Available outside of class for help.
I took his class online and dropped it. I'm sure he is a fine teacher, but I do not like history, and this was A LOT of work for an online class. There is a lot of reading and the quiz questions are pretty detailed. Probably ok if you like the subject
Tim Kelly is by far the best Poly Sci teacher at West Valley. He deserves to be teacher at a University. A lot of reading, but that helps you interact within the class and helps you kick your classmates butt's in debates and what have you. Take him if you get the chance.
THIS IS A VERY DIFFICULT TEACHER AND CLASS! He throws a ton of info at you and his tests are very hard. WARNING DON'T DO IT!
good teacher, knows what he is talking about, enjoys talkin about nuclear weopons, interned at the White House! good teacher a little dry sometimes but effective

Essays and tests not fun. Class interaction and debate a great time. Mr. Kelly is an awesome teacher and he's funny. I recommend the class, just BE ON TIME.
Very very hard, a LOT of homework and reading...doesn't make the class interesting. I would never take this teacher again...the biggest mistake in my student life LOL
He is really nice... at first he's intimidating because he assigns a**** load of reading but really you do not have to read it to get a good grade. NOBODY reads the textbooks. I got a B and I didn't really try that hard. I had a 3 hour night class with him and I did fine.. so can you!
His expectations are too high for this level shcool.
I did not like him very much. he was sort of mean and sarcastic, i would not take him for a for history or any other class he offers. i knew in my mind that he was being **** to me and it was just unfair!!
he is a very biased teacher and discriminates against certain students. he is completly unfair and boring. he also likes to tell students that they are doing well in the class and then turns around and gives them bad grades. he is a very hard teacher and is not west valley material. he is very sarcastic and is not OPEN MINDED!!!!!!
MR Kelly is a pretty cool guy. his class is kickback bc notes are provided for you. he does a lot of class debates and discussions which are great bc they waste time =) easiest way to get a good grade is show up!! you learn a lot about poli sci,,hes funny and he cares. take him!!! hes awesome!!
Professor Kelly is very clear with what he expects from the class. His powerpoint presentation is very helpful especially since you can print the lecture out ahead of time online. Make sure you do the readings and participate. Also, ask questions if you are confussed, he is very helpful.
Kelly is horrible, i should have never taken his class. he can't teach worth doo doo. im so fet up with his stupid power point lectures, they are so lame. DON"T TAKE KELLY EVER!!!!!!!
His classes are by no means easy-A, but he makes it interesting. There's a lot of discussion that takes place, so you aren't just listening to lectures. He also puts all of his Powerpoints on his website, which is nice if you ever miss something. If you don't procrastinate and come to class on time, you should get at least a B.
Awesome teacher. One of the best classes I've ever taken.
Good teacher and HOT HOT HOT!
if you absolutely love taking notes, then go for it. my hand hurts just thinking about all the notes...i swear at least 7 pages of notes a class. everything is online which is nice, but he has a lot of expectations and expects you to do a lot of reading.
Dr. Kelly is the best teacher at WV! If you are transferring to anything but ITT Tech and you need to see if you're ready to handle a real university course, take Kelly! Awesome class!
Okay, if you have a hard time taking notes, then be smart and print out the lectures online before hand!! Kelly is an awsome teacher! I only wish I could have taken more classes with him. Classes are really chill and he is open for discussion anytime! Take Kelly, do what he says, and you will pass. He even gives you study guides for the tests!
I'd say Tim wasn't the greatest teachers. Yea his videos and jokes did lighten up the room but his lectures were some of the boringiest lectures I've ever been in! His tests and essays are pretty hard...Goes to show what kind of teacher he is when a good 2/3 of the class gets a C or lower on the essays. I would never recommend him
You would think History would be a breeze, but this course was pretty tough. Kelly is a good teacher and explains things very clearly, but the assignments and exams are very difficult. He posts all letctures on-line, so don't waste paper and your concentration on taking notes when you can print his. Go to the book's website for practice quizzes.
Mr. Kelly's class requires A LOT of reading and note taking. You have the readings from the text, in class lectures, as well as online readings (each week!) and outside books. YOU MUST STUDY for his exams! He knows his subject, is available during office hours when you need help, and is a nice guy. This is a tough class though, be prepared.
Hard class, you MUST read the book, take notes, take notes on the lectures, and not fall behind. I learned a lot, and did a surprising amount of assignments for just one class, but I got an A and it wasnt impossible. Good guy, hes easy to get a hold of, and always willing to help. Teaches history in kind of a dark way, though.
Professor Kelly is spantacular. If you're looking to have someone hold your hand and spoon feed you an A, then this by no means is the class for you. He really ups the ante and makes you strive just a step higher to reach your potential. If you want to learn, then this is the class for you. Plus he's funny as all hellz. Fo realz.
Incredible lecturer. Kelly is the only instructor I've had at WVC worthy of the title "professor." He is an extremely challenging teacher. This is why my rating probably shows up as a frowny face. He is serious, intense, and demands the same from you. Very hard, in other words. Take him only if you are ready for an upper division-level experience.
Very passionate about what he teaches. does a good job about getting to the level of young people. definitly read the books he assigns. even though he didn't directly use them throughout the entire lectures, he gives some mean finals and midterms all pertaining directly to the textbooks.
Dr. Kelly teaches in a "university style" format; you will be expected to take notes from both the reading and his lectures (they are different). He has a great knowledge and you will learn a lot from him. The caution lies in needing to reitterate (paraphrase), not evaluate, what he has lectured on when you take tests. This was not made clear.
An overall amazing guy. He presents difficult information with clarity. You won't realize you're in at a community college in his class.
the worst teacher you can have. Wants to see his student fail.
Very challenging but extremely intelligent teacher. Notices when you put in effort, but still very strict. He's uptight about attendence and assignments, but will help you if you really need it. Sometimes his essay revisions make no sense. HARD ESSAY GRADER (essay based class)! If you can't handle stress don't take this it, but it's a great class.
I hate this class! Teacher gives way to much work to even enjoy or digest the material. Avoid this class at all costs. T.K. get a night job and quit your day job!!
I had Dr. Kelly for 17B and also had him for International Relations. And really, his classes are difficult, but they're worth it. He only gives 2 essays a semester and barely any homework. There's a lot of reading but fun discussions. If you're interested in PoliSci or history classes, he is great. Just try to be smart, he's not gonna spoon feed u
Great teacher, I've had him for 3 classes and will be doing a fourth, i would take him for everything if I could. It is your own fault if you fail this class, because there are a lot of readings you must have the discipline to keep up with them. He provides so many outlets for info relating to his course and encourages discussions.
I had a great time in Tims class. I have never found history interesting until I took his class. Mind you though this class does require a good amount of commitment and a lot of reading. So basically, if you do not like to read or show up to class, don't take him. However, if you want to challenge yourself and learn a thing or two, then go for it.
We had to write about two sides an issue and which one we agreed with. Mr. Kelly gave my paper a "C" because I wrote about one opinion more than the other. I was excited to write the next paper; positive that I had the right idea. But due to a grammar error I again received a "C".
Very Very difficult. However, you will learn a ton from this teacher. Classroom is very enjoyable, hes hilarious. But tons of reading, papers galore that are very difficult. Near impossible to get A. I took poly sci 003 with him, if Poly Sci or history is your major, take him. If not, do something else
I currently attend UCLA, but attended West Valley College a few years ago. Dr. Kelly is an amazing Professor. For those who plan on going to a University, he truly gets you ready for how it really is. He is not only one of my favorite professors, but he is also a great friend. Yes he is hard, but no one said college would be easy.
I knew very little about politics before Kelly. Now I am very confident and can hold a good conversation on this subject! If you don't know politics that well I recommend the winter class. Its intense but more personal. YES YOU HAVE TO THINK but Kelly will help you with any questions. Write LOTS of examples in your essays and you will get a good g
Worst teacher ever! i took him online and man this guy thinks that everyone is in love with history. you have to read SOO much! do discussions every week, which my never seemed to be long enough for him. Quizzes and test extremely hard. so if you don't have a life I recommend him. If you have a life and are a full time student, RUN!
My least favorite teacher ever. I took him twice once online and I failed so I decided to take him in class and it was no easier. The only people that I know who have liked him and gotten a good grade are the poli sci majors. I spent hours and hours reading and taking notes from my book and studying and I still got a D
Such a hard teacher but so fantastic. everyone who gives him bad comments are the people who sat at the back, did nothing and didnt try. if you try, hell know and hell like you and youll do well. def my favorite professor at wv so far!
Dr. Kelly's classes are not easy, but I don't why one should expect them to be. Back when people took classes because they actually cared about learning, Dr. Kelly would have been more appreciated. He puts effort into making unconventional, interactive lessons, and covers somewhat extensive material that exposes parts of history most classes don't.
Great professor. He truly wants to see students do well and learn. There is a lot of reading and he expects you to read it all, so plan accordingly. If you do the work and attend class, you'll do well. He is very helpful when you visit him during his office hours.
A gem of a teacher. Handles material that is at times dry and tedious with good humor and helpful exposition. Posts lecture outlines, test study guides, and makes himself graciously available for questions and discussion. Not for people looking for an easy "A", but if you're at college to learn, Dr. Kelly gets my highest recommendation.
Please never take this professor. He is the idiot professor I have ever seen. He has bad attitudes. Don't aspect A or B in his class. His lecture notes aren't helpful at all for quizzes and tests. The teacher not recommended.
"He is the idiot professor I have ever seen" The people voicing complaints are from the shallow end of the gene pool. It is an atrocity that a teacher as intelligent and dedicated as Dr Kelly is rated as low as he is. You people whining about your own failures should be flogged.
Dr. Kelly is an amazing teacher who will prepare you for University level classes. Working hard and earning a good grade in his class was one of the most rewarding experiences for me when I attended West Valley.
Prof. Kelly was a great teacher. I never enjoyed history in high school but he made the class interesting. I actually learned about our countries beginning. His lectures were insightful and edgy. He taught about our real past even the horrible parts we like to pretend never happened. Mr. Kelly is one of my all time favorite teachers.
Ditto!!! Dr. Kelly is a great professor! His class is not at all easy but it is definately do-able. If you are lazy, do not take this class. But if you're like me and like to be challenged and learn something at the same time, I definately reccomend Dr. Kelly. He wants you to comprehend our nation's history and RETAIN it. Awesome class!
Not for slackers, not a typical West Valley teacher. Saying that he is the best professor at West Valley, and I have no idea why hes not at a UC or Ivy League!
Lectures were intersting but nothing else. Very demanding workload. His class =2 class loads. Only take this class if you REALLY can commit to it and pay extreme attention to detail.
He teaches social science not organic chemistry! I'm surprised that people think he is difficult. Everything is straight from the lecture and he gives EC. If you are chronically late or lazy this is not the class for you. On a side note, he called Marxism a "bankrupt ideology". By pushing buttons he makes people THINK.
This guy is awesome! He used to work in the Clinton administration! He wrote me a stellar recommendation to Columbia and I just found out I got in! His classes are fun and he's really friendly to talk to if you have questions or don't understand. Best at West Valley by far! Just don't expect an easy A if you're lazy or a bum
The best! Always an entertaining lecture. He truly seems to enjoy a great discussion. If yuo just go to every lecture the book is not important to read as much. Only one or two assignments.
Better stick to his book for this class...close minded. Every test that was the same answer for everyone, I got all B's, anything he decided the grade like papers and such, he gave all D's. Lots of work, tons of reading. Very grueling, not very fun. The lady teacher is better, I forget her name, I got a B in her class, go figure.
Maybe he is a fantastic professor in person, but his online class is a huge letdown. I have never been bored by history until this class. There is very little assistance, and his "comments" are often dry and rude - without being informative.
Kelly is a really good teacher. His online class is set up the same every week so you know exactly what is due when. The questions come straight from the book and the lectures, nothing is random. Only 2 essays (1 for the midterm and 1 separate essay). He grades quickly and gets back to you asap so you know exactly where you stand in his class!
This class was ridiculous. His lectures consisted of his reasons/philosophy why stuff happened rather than just the facts. He expected us to all become historians and I'm slightly above average in writing and I never scored a B on a paper. He used vulgar language in the classroom that was offensive to me.
Professor Kelly is brilliant, hilarious, and wants you to do well in his class. I recommend him to anyone wanting to learn. If this is not your subject, or you're looking for an easy A, then don't take him. But if you have interest in the subject, he gives you all the tools to do well!! I wish I could have him for every class!
I LOVED his class. I took it over the summer, so it went really fast. It was hard and we read like crazy, but I loved his lectures and his passion for the topic. He's animated, hilarious, intriguing and really nice. I highly recommend his class if you're willing to work hard and learn a lot! :D
I really can't say enough about his lectures. He really gets into what he's saying and brings it to life. Don't get me wrong - it's a hard class. But it'd be a whole lot harder if he weren't so AWESOME! :) He's passionate about human rights, and I LOVE THAT!! (I totally had a crush on him. XD lol!)
This class was reading opinions (with a liberal bias and agenda) and reading the textbook. If you like to read and learn 3000 facts -only to be asked 15 questions out of those 3000 facts in a timed 20-minute test - then this is for you. 15 questions sets a scale so that if you miss more than one- your odds to get low grades are guaranteed. He give
Run, he is an unfair, rude person and you'll work hard for nothing gained.
Dr. Kelly is a great teacher - well informed, prompt grading, concise teaching style, easy to like. The material is hard and the readings are demanding but Kelly does what he can to help lessen the load. He cares more about comprehension than information regurgitation. Further, he cares about his students and actually gets to know you individually.
Teacher is very engaging and interesting. He really got the class debating. There is alot of reading and the tests were tough.
Skip the two comments below mine and then read the next three. The class is hard, but go see him for help. You have to be willing and motivated. He sets the bar high for teachers, I don't know if any other teachers I get will even come close. Thanks Prof. K!!!!
Dr. Kelly is a truly great teacher. He takes what I feel is a rather dry subject at times and makes it very interesting! He shows Daily Show Clips and other movie clips to get his point across He also has students participate in a mock congress that makes the class really fun and interesting! I encourage everyone to take this class with him!
Dr. Kelly is a great instructor, and is very engaging. I have rarely had a teacher for such a short time about whom I felt so strongly. His mock congress and elections make the class even better
I had professor kelly for the 4 week poli sci 101 class. Even though i barely read at all i was still able to leave with a B-. However i would advise others to read because at times i felt stressed. Professor Kelly is very engaging and is helpful during his office hours. I suggest you take his courses!
He's does accept freethinking! Repeat the book and you'll do fine if you work very hard.
This class is HARD. great subject matter, but the online format diminishes it. final/ midterm: the prof. gives you the 11 essay questions in advance, in order to do well, you have to write 11 2 pg. essays for each test(in adition to a term paper, of course.) found the prof's comments on the tests disrespectful and sarcastic also. got an A, though.
I was getting an A, but I dropped this class because I could't stand the book this teacher was using. It emphasized trivial historical happenings that later appeared on the online tests! Luckily I do well on those kind of tests, but I just didn't think I was learning the ESSENTIAL parts of American History through the book he chose for this class.
I sat in on a couple of 'lectures' in order to better tutor another struggling student. The professor appears far more interested in Political Science than History, and doesn't readily accept serious challenges of his often slanted opinions. I showed my graduate professors at an Ivy League school his tests and essay questions - they found them anal
Dr. Kelly's lectures are anything but boring. Maybe its 'cause I like listening to history, or maybe its his method. Overall, Dr. Kelly is good.
Kelley is a great teacher. His cussing is a little much, but it makes the class less formal. I learned alot from class which is heavily lecture based. Not an easy teacher! Slackers Beware! You must work hard to get an A.
Professor Kelly is awesome and knows his stuff! i took this class online and he provided lectures for each chapter. he gives u all the possible essay questions for each midterm and only chooses 2 out of 10 questions for u to write so it is important to do outlines for each one just in case, gives valuable feedback for each essay question turned in.
I took history with Mr. Kelly and loved his class. for his tests, he gives you 10 possable questions and then on test day, he picks 2 out of the 10. If you are prepared and study the 10 questions, you can easly get an A in this class. Plus he is very informative and really seems to like teaching History.
He is extremely BORING! Do not take his class. Reading and learning on your own is a must. He does not allow time to discuss things in class except making sure the reading was done. Not a fun class.
Very into his history. If you do not live and breathe this class don't bother taking it. Tests are hard and will be a BIG factor in this class.
Poli Sci 3 is not easy. Test questions are essay based which means essay writing skills are extremely important. But don't be alarmed, his material is full of content so attendance is very important in passing the class. He is also very helpful and will assist you if you need help so don't be afraid to talk to him during or outside of class!
Kelly's class is incredibly difficult, requing 10x more time & effort than any other West Valley class. Don't bother taking if it if you aren't willing to put in TONS of work studying & reading. The workload is structured as if he assumes this is the only class you are taking. 2 blue book tests worth more than half your grade + 1 paper & 2 quizzes
It simply impossible to get an A in this class. The midterm is based on one essay question regarding opinions and examples from a book that he made us read nd it's not even relate to the textbook, it's just a random historic novel, another essay question related to 6 chapters in the book that consist of 150 pages and 20 impossible fillin the blanks
An amazing man who teaches amazing material. If you actually want to learn, take his classes. He will provide you with a wealth of knowledge. He is not easy, but if you give the effort, you will benefit. One of the best teachers in West Valley College!
Took this class online winter & was SHOCKED at how difficult it was. Some prof will give you a break for online winter session- he will NOT. For 3 weeks I rarely left my room- all I day had to read, type & take quizzes. He is a TOUGH grader. For tests he gives 10 promts to prepare for, 2 are given. I got through, but gave up my vacation completely
Dr.Kelly is amazing! For everyone that is saying that he is hard,he is!But he has a Ph.D & he is choosing to teach at a CC so that you can get a feel of what "real college" is like. His classes are amazing, he is hilarious, and he is so passionate about what he does.Take this class if you are serious, otherwise skip it.Cant wait for polisci 2 with him
One of the best professors at West Valley. He is fun to be around and makes class interesting. His class is not difficult - unless you consider attending, listening, reading, and studying to be difficult - it's simply a college level class. Many professors at WVC teach at high school level so if you're used to that, Kelly is not for you.
Professor Kelley's HARD. I wouldnt recommend taking him if your not a poli sci major. On the other hand, he is an AMAZING professor. His lectures are never boring and you leave class learning so much.
Professor Kelly is the hardest teacher I've had and I've taken classes at multiple universities. Attendance is mandatory! I witnessed friends get F's in his class because he graded them harder. My paper/midterm was written poorly compared to my friends who got F'a but received a higher grade..
Dr. Kelly is incredible and is in the top tier of political science/history professors. Do not take his classes if you need an easy class, however, if you don't take his class you will miss out on a wealth of knowledge! He is top notch and very organized. He should be at an Ivy, so have gratitude you can take him at a CC!
He's definitely a tough grader. He was particularly unclear about his specifications for his essays, but gave you enough feedback that it gave you a chance to do better on the next. Homework isn't assigned, although without the readings, it's hard to follow. His discussions are fantastic, but if profanityfrankness isn't your bag, don't take him.
Hmm, where do I start.. I regret ever spending money on this class. He was the hardest teacher I've ever had. His material was intense. Attendance was mandatory. I had to drop his class because I knew after the first test I would not pass. I don't recommend him. But I will give him credit, his lectures are really entertaining and interesting.
I took this class online during winter session which are about 3 weeks long. He's class is pretty straight forward and there will be a lot of work to do. There is writting exams instead of multiple questions, but it makes sense for an online class. His class over all is very interesting, and you will have to work hard to get a good grade.
He thinks we are robots who can maintain so much information at once it is almost impossible to pass his class. He expects way too much from his students especially on quizzes and tests. This is not an AP class this is a community college class.
Study from day one or you are doomed.
One of the best lectures i have ever attended. Incredibly smart teacher, and knows his stuff. Very tough grader so make sure you know the very techinal details of the subjects you choose to write on.
he grades pretty hard on papers, and on his tests are not super hard but not easy. He teaches pretty well and if you ask questions he will answer them and explain it. because i am not an amazing writer i received pretty low scores even though i would put in the info he says is necessary. so if he says this info is necessary put that in and more.
Instructor Kelly is tough and his class is very needy. I was taking 20 units while in his class and didn't have the time to devote to his class that he expects from his students. Definitely NOT an easy A; if that's what you're aiming for, move on to the next possible instructor!
Professor Kelly is very passionate about History and knows it well. Unfortunately, his teaching style and work is extremely difficult to learn and get a good grade in. All Exams consists of long essays and short answers with no open notes. You have to memorize hundreds of terms in order to pass a quiz or test. This class is not easy to get an A.
I took this class for Winter '15. He literally accumulates the 16-week worth of work into 3 weeks. Reading 2 books in a short amount of time in order to take about 16 quizzes in total was definitely not enough. He gave the worst feedback ever making you seem dumb. He expects so much from you as a low-division course. I'd rather take the other profs
Very knowledgeable teacher... I almost feel bad that he's a community college teacher he knows a lot! But he's just not a good teacher! He I got an A on his first midterm and a D on the second midterm which shows I thought knew his style, but oh wait... I didn't! And his tests are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. He just makes it really hard when its not...
Exams are tough but he gives provides study guides of exactly what you need to know. I studied two weeks prior to my exams and outlined everything, I recommend doing the same. He's a great professor and is passionate about history. don't miss a class, most of the exams are based off of lectures. Great professor and I look forward to his Cali class!
hes the teacher who wants to show you what university is like, hes very knowledgeable and knows what he teaches,BUT! he is NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. every time I went to his office hours he refused to help me! yeah literally refused! just because he has a very specific way that he wants things done and he will not do it your way, even if not helping you!
Assigns long papers. Thinks EVERYONE in his class is a Hist. Maj. Assigns a ton of reading for what the class is. TONS of notes, and if you miss class, there goes "A"(as if the tests and such didn't kill that). Just TOO much work, honestly. I know it's college, but no one cares for Hist.17B. Take if a history major, skip like the plague if not.
I hate tim kelly, would rather die before take another class with him. I dont care that the content is difficult he's just the least helpful teacher ever and super mean and just overall real bad!
Stay away from this professor. His lectures are boring. I took attended class and took notes everyday and still didn't understand what was going on. The reading material is a ton. He claims that he is not like other professors and he'll open your eyes so you see things in a different perspective but he breezes over everything very quickly. RIP GPA
I didnt even know I could hate someone and a class this much, until i took tim kelly's class.
These reviews are hilarious. I wouldnt say hes that bad I'm taking his polit 4 right now and it takes a lot of my time but I'm managing to maintain an ok grade. But then again this is the only class i'm taking so i'm putting all my focus on this one class.
just do yourself a favor and take this class either with a different teacher or at mission college. TONS of reading. TONS of notes and tons of work to do which I was more than happy to do but then I was hit with Ds and Fs on most of my papers and I got really unmotivated. specially since he doesn't really help you out to do better.
I walked into this class thinking I'm going to learn a lot and finish college strong. Now I'm scared Im not going to pass and I didnt learn much either and the class is not interesting. extremely boring, straight up lecture every session and hours and hours of reading and reading. too much work for too little outcome. would not take it again.
This class was a lot of fun! We did a mock-international convention and it allowed me to participate and to understand the nation I chose. A few assignments were tied to the nation, which was even more fun (I chose North Korea, and Mr. Kelly allowed me a lot of creative freedom). I loved this class, but don't take it if you don't plan to study.
While Poli4 was my favorite class with this professor, Poli2 was a close second. There were plenty of participation opportunities (mock congress, mock presidential election, mock parliament). You need to attend each class, pay attention to lectures, and work hard on the papers, but if you do that then you'll do great in the class.
This class was difficult, but definitely worth it. It will prepare you for a 4-year university, and you will learn a lot. It don't have as many "games" as Poli 2 or 4, though there is one mock political party game, and that was fun. The class was hard, but meeting with a study group made the final a breeze. Just be ready to study.
Quizzes and discussion questions every week, fairly easy. One paper based on a book, you must read the book to do well on the paper. Midterm and Final are 2 essay questions that are at least a page and a half typed for each. As long as you read the lectures he posts, which aren't too long, and prep for the essay question you will do well.
GO TO CLASS. Print the powerpoint slides, take notes on the slides and you will succeed. 2 papers, a midterm and final. Both midterm and final are fairly tough essay questions. I strongly recommend talking to him in office hours about papers, you'll get a good grade if you do. Study hard for the final and midterm, and you will do well.
He is amazing! I transferred to UCSC after his class, and frankly, i wouldn't have been ready for it if he hadn't been tough. It was a LOT of work, but worth every bit of it. Yes he is attractive, which makes for easy listening, otherwise, come with your coffee cup full and take notes.
I survived without reading the history book since i calculated what I needed to get on the midterm, Manzanar paper and final and perfect attendance for 50pts. Just make sure you use the study guides& actually put the time in to answer those questions& study/memorize em before a test. Nervous on the 2-4 pgs? Don't worry, structure your sentences!
Very accessible and helpful with clear guides for essays. Regularly updates his lectures to give us contemporary examples. Genuinely cares about his subject and student questions. You have to 100% work for your grade in the class.
I enjoyed every minute of this class with Dr. Kelly. He was by far the best teacher I have taken at WVC, and the reason I am confident I can do well at Berkeley. I truly believe he is the best Poli Sci teacher at West Valley and Mission. If you're looking for a tough class that will prepare you for a four-year, take Dr. Kelly.
Dr. Kelly is probably one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's very clear (and hilarious). Don't try to fool him, he uses a ruler to measure the margins when he grades papers, and he's read the books so many times he can actually tell when you are plagiarizing.
This is the first class of Professor Kelly's that I've taken in person and honestly I would recommend. His lectures are amazing and in depth and pretty interesting. He is a tough grader, but so long as you actually do the readings and pay attention in class, you should be able to pass easily.
Dr. Kelly prepares you for a 4-year college. I took his U.S. History class and while most classes, you just sit there and take notes, it is very interesting. You really need to read many things. I had to drop the class because he grades hard and just assigns many readings and it was overwhelming. Dont take him unless you are a history major.
was hesitant to take an online winter history course with Kelly because of ratings,, but was really easy. The class average is low, but I managed to get a high A without trying super hard. As long as you follow instructions and do all of the required work, you'll be fine...
Professor Kelly is a good professor.. for a history major. His lectures are very long & he makes comments that are somewhat uncomfortable but seen as funny to the men in the room. As one of the only girls in the class, I felt uncomfortable with his swearing & explicit comments. He wants you to succeed on your own, however, he is approachable.
Tim Kelly is a very good and hardworking Professor in my opinion in a way that he tries to prepare you for a 4 year. What concerns me is he preaches his own ideology. He is also very vague on his writing assignments. It is important for you to go to his office hours and let him check you papers before you actually turn it in for a good grade.
I took 17B to satisfy a GE req, so my interest in the class wasn't high. Nevertheless, the topics for discussion were engaging. Midterm/final, answer all ten possible essay questions and just copy paste the answers to the two questions you're given. Weekly quizzes require you to read each chapter. Start early on the paper.
Humanities & Social Sciences isn't my forte, but topics & modules made this class fairly blessful. Weekly quizzes & discussions, Level 2 (Medium Easy). Paper was Level 5 (Highly Advanced). Lastly, Midterm & Final Exam was Level 4 (Medium Advanced), which they're conducted primarily in online lectures & readings. Overall, exhausting, but a blessing.
I've taken Kelly for poli sci 2,3(honors),4 and history 20&17B. He is an amazing lecturer makes class fun and exciting with activities and gives different perspectives on political issues. His essay prompts can be vague but if you ask questions he will basically give you the answers. Will go out of his way to help students ! Online classes are easy
I've had the privilege of taking Dr. Kelly for several classes during my time at WVC. If you are interested in history or politics, definitely take him as he is extremeley knowledgable and provides excellent lectures. I won't lie, his classes do require you to put in a lot of time studying, but he does a great job of preparing you for university.
I've had the privilege of attending 3 of Kellys classes and I'm expecting to take 2 more next semester. He is really passionate about poli sci and history and his lectures show for it. But he's also a tough grader. I just got by with an A in all of his classes. He's kinda like a dad teacher: if you show your passionate, hell appreciate it.
Professor Kelly is truly one of those professors who cares about you and will make efforts to help if he can. Everything on the syllabus was a super organized outline of what your experience is gonna look like. The man doesn't lie, it is a lot of reading, but it's pretty easy. Communicate, do your work, you'll be fine.
You'll need to read and take thorough notes on the textbook, readings, and lectures. The midterm, final, and paper are most important to your grade. For essay questions, I'd recommend writing answers or an outline for all the questions beforehand in order to be prepared. The class isn't necessarily hard, it just requires your focus and attention.
I love professor Kelley so much I took him twice. He was the best teacher I ever had at west valley. He sparked an interest in history for me and Im now at university working towards a history degree. His lectures were well organized and I learned a lot from them. Its so apparent that he loves what he does and has passion for the subject.
Prof. Kelly wants whats best for his students but does this this in a tough way. I absolutely regretted taking his history course during the Winter semester. It's so much work and it's so time consuming. He wants certain things in his large assignments that are just so extra. Take his class in a longer semester! You will use the textbooks!
Dr. Kelly is a hard grader, but he does give good lectures and actually explains stuff. He doe have high expectations for his students. He isn't that sympathetic to your personal issues and is very off putting and serious when you first meet him, but he is a good teacher ad the discussions and activities are very interesting.
You will definitely use the textbook, all the online readings, and it is important to listen and take notes on his lectures. He really wants everyone to do well. His comments are really detailed as well. You need to do good on midterm and finals to get a good grade for sure
Good Professor but a super hard class. 2 Papers for your midterm and 1 paper + test for the final, 4-6 pages with info cited from the textbook and assigned readings. Grades hard but if you put in the effort you'll pass. Take lots of notes during the lecture and be sure to read the textbook as that's what all the material/tests are based on.
If you have good studying habits and read the assigned texts, then passing this class will be relatively easy. The essays and exams are based entirely off of the readings and lectures. Do not skip out on the textbook !
Hard grader, nice guy. He really wants his students to succeed. Make sure you put effort into the papers. Tough love kind of vibe. Lots of quizzes. He gives a lot of freedom for discussions, full credit if you meet word count. I found the textbook for cheap on chegg. I rented it for the time of the course and saved a ton of money. Just work hard.
He is amazing!! I learned so much from him. At first, he can come off as a mean guy but he is a funny and very caring guy. His class was my favorite out of all the classes I took that semester. If you love history you will love his class.
FYI... Tim Kelly is the same teacher as Jon Kelly. I definitely do not recommend taking his class. Very hard on grading and the class average on most assignments were extremely low.
Professor Kelly has great lectures that really help you understand the material and is always available outside of class to answer questions. His class definitely requires that you put in a decent amount of effort, but it's interesting and not too difficult. Tip- for essay questions, write outlines of all the possible essays to save time.
Highly recommend Dr. Kelly to students majoring and/or minoring in History/Politics. However, he is a strict grader so you need to be cautious with your assignments/papers. I was in his POLI 003 for the first half of S21, but unfortunately dropped out due to poor academic performance. He has high expectations but is passionate about the subject.
He is a good teacher and cares about his students, the only thing is that he is a super hard grader, like when it comes to essays, I'm normally pretty good at them in English class, but he grades them hard. So if you're okay with grades on essays then take him. Everything else I think he grades appropriately, which is just quizzes and discussions.
Hard grader and is harsh, made me wanna cry:/
Has precise guidelines you must follow, or you get low points, but very enthusiastic and passionate about lectures.
HE IS A HARD GRADER and it is not an easy class at all. I am a business major and I am taking this for a gen ed requirement and didn't think that I would need to do so much work. He is kind, but he also doesn't make acceptions for anything. You lose points when you aren't in class, or when you are late. PAY ATTENTION TO LECTURES!!!
Took this class for gen Ed, unless you're a history or polisci major I wouldn't recommend. He's passionate about it but I couldn't keep up on lectures sometimes when legit listening since it's so fast and confusing for someone not rlly interested in the first place. He weighted the final so much that I could've gotten an A, or failed, no thanks
hard teacher but a nice guy
I've taken POLI3H in Spring 23 with a near 100 and POLI2 in Fall 24 with above 100. As a poli sci major, Kelly has been a godsend - there has been no better teacher in my entire life than him: he's passionate, knowledgeable, and helpful. If you push yourself and stay ahead (~3-6 hrs of studying a week), then his assignments won't be hard at all.
Professor Kelly is an amazing professor and makes any class interesting and engaging. I loved him as a teacher however he is incredibly strict and unfair with his tests (only essays) and papers. He teaches good but grades incredibly hard like a graduate teacher. I think he is good for history majors. Don't recommend taking him if you are not.
This guy thinks he's an english teacher. 5 page essay at the end of semester. Don't waste your time, so much worthless writing!
At first, he was very helpful when I reached out to him asking if I should drop the class or not. He gave great tips. However, he is an EXTREMELY tough grader. I received a C- on my essay.... I'm an English major! The quizzes are worded in an unclear manner, and the answers you give must reflect his perspective. Mid-term/final prompts are vague.
Be ready to dedicate every moment of your week to pass one of his classes. Inspirational in the sense that this class inspired me to change my major.
Prof. Kelly runs a tough class, but puts in the effort to help you succeed. The workload is heavy, especially on essays, but utilizing resources like the textbook and unstuckstudy can make prep a breeze. Worth the challenge.
Very tough class but worth it. You can be comfortable putting a lot of time knowing that he's gonna work just as hard as you (seriously I've never seen a faster grader). Grade mostly based on the midterm, final and two papers so make sire to prepare for those EARLY. Lectures were fun and engaging and you can tell he cares a lot.
He's really nice but very particular/harsh grader and expectations aren't always clear, but he grades things almost immediately. For paper + essay Q's just read the lectures and take notes on names, dates, and important details, and be factual, no conjecture or opinion. Difficult class but reach out if you need help, he appreciates the commitment.
Really cool lectures, engaging, genuine, and informative. Some material leans very left if you care. Very tough grader, but leaves large amount of feedback. Would not recommend if you are taking 4+ other classes. A lot of material to cover weekly. Very nice guy, and grades supernaturally fast. Overall, happy with choosing this class.
Dr. Kelly's classes are for ppl who have a passion for History and/or PoliSci. Lectures are fast so if you don't already have foundational knowledge or if History/Polisci isn't your thing, you'll struggle. I personally loved his course. Really harsh grader but also has very clear guides for papers and is humorous. Would take again.
My god, how do I start, Although I passed this class with an A, It was a pain in the ass since we had 2 essays and a whole book to read for a shrecher paper which he has the outmost ridiculous expectations. The exams weren't that bad as I got 100% in the essays but the paper we had to do was the most Annoying assignment you had to do. 😭🙏🏻🥀
If you are passionate about History this is a good profesor for you. I enjoy history, but he made it more entertaining and real which made my interest within history grow. Its important to pay attention to the lectures and take good notes. Each lecture is almost all note worthy. Do not forget, HE IS A TOUGH GRADER!
I've take him two times. for the paper tbh i've never gotten above a C+ on the paper just get through it even if you do bad you can still get an A in the class. prep for the exams beforehand. i promise you'll thank yourself later! just add lots of examples and explanations. for my perfect score exams each of my answers were 800-1000 words.
