If it weren't for the fact that I already had AP Calculus in high school in which I'd learned all the things he's taught so far, I'd be completely lost. He seems to have good TAs though, at least the one I have for discussion is good. She knows what she's doing.
I also took AP calc in high school which made it easy, but if I hadnt, I would probably be lost. The TA makes it easier (and funny) so thats a save. Homework has to be in full sentences because its a ''biology'' math class so you have to do more work than 16 series. Midterm was pretty easy, he tells you exact sections to study.

I was in this class for 2 weeks and I transfered out to become a Math major. I hated this class with a passion. The answer book was 75% wrong, even Lewis said that himself. All the problems and answers had to be in complete sentences. If it weren't for AP calc, i wouldn't have known what was goin on. Avoid this class and just take 16.
Seriously, the easiest class ever if you've taken AP Calc. I easily aced the final and didn't pay attention to one lecture. Don't take it unless you've had Calc. He's explains everything in the hardest way possible. Try to avoid 17 all together.
Mr. Lewis is a pretty nice guy, but I thought the class was really hard. Most of this stuff I had already learned in high school, but because of the confusing way everything is done...I barely got a C on the midterm. For most majors, you only need 16A and B, so...if you really don't like math or don't need MAT17, I suggest not taking it.
he's very helpful and I love his hand writing; very easy to see and understand.
this guy is pretty helpful in office hours but...really that's about it. i have NEVER taken Pre-Cal/Trig or even touched the subject of Calculus...and right now i stand at about a middle to high B...not bad huh? my TA straight up sucks! if anyone has a better TA, i'll be more than willing to go because i was only in this class for a TA discussion..
Lewis is so well organized in his presentation of the material and so responsive to questions! He really wants his students to succeed. I definitely want to take 17B from him!
This class has less hmwk than the 16 and 21 but thats for the quarter i took it and my TA told us we were very lucky. His test is not that difficult, i only got a point taken off. As long you go to office hours and lectures if you understand math that well, you should be fine. But I suggest at least trig understanding for this class.
Lectures are sometimes confusing. Covers a lot of material, like proofs, that are not really needs for his tests. His midterm was very easy this quarter; final was more difficult. He does give you the specifics on what will be on the tests which helps when studying. Office hours, discussions, and midterm/final reviews were more helpful than lecture
Very patient with his students, nice professor. Final was hard though.
ok, i signed up for this class because the name sounded cool and im a bio major- dont make the same mistake if ur not the math type that enjoys word problems encompassing science topics... his class, although interesting, screwed over my initial interest in mathematics - just be safe, for the sake of your gpa and take 16... or 21 if u have to.
Couldn't really teach calculus, good thing I had taken it before. Unless you are actually interested in useless ways you COULD apply math to biology/science, don't take this class, and take 16 series to save your GPA. 17 series really only gives you more work so you feel like your achieving more. Final was crap, much harder than MT which was easy.
Prof. Lewis has to be one of the best teachers in the UCD math dept. He is extremely clear and energetic during lecture, and his office hours ROCK! He is unbelievably patient, and his knowledge of the subject is extensive.
He's an okay teacher, though he makes things way harder than it should be. I only took the 17 series for the extra unit because 16 is only 3. You can still take 16 series if you are a BioSci major.
Class grade is based on three categories, 20 percent hw (which is graded pretty toughly), 35 percent midterm, and 45 percent final, some trick questions on the tests, but they are do-able, doesnt offer practice tests, goes over what type of problems will be on it, also when he lectures, he tends to be repetative and not go on to the hard stuff
not that great of a teacher and i dontsee how the 17 series can be related to bio sci. unless you include doing word problems about FLIES and BUGS those are the closest applications he has to relating it to biology. his midterm is so striaghtforward becuase he tells you exactly what is on there. and its easy to cheat in that class.
Awesome professor. One of the best in the Mathematics department. He actually slows down to make sure everyone understands the material. DO homeworks because it's worth a lot. For the finals, do the practice problems he assigns, they help a lot! Too bad he's not teachng 17c.
faaaaaaantastic
Good professor. Clear teaching style--very approachable. Best math teacher I've had. He goes over everything you need to know. As long as you study, you'll do fine.
Aweson and clear. Tests are fair. I didn't stress at all when taking the classes. I highly recommend taking professor Lewis courses if available.
Very neat and clear notes, explains everything, great teacher
Relatively easy class when compared to other upper divisiin math courses. Very helpful during class and office hours. He's probably one of the best math professors I have had at UC Davis (I'm a math major).
He's the best college math professor I ever had! His lectures were neat and understandable. The homeworks were pretty fair but some word problems were hard (go to math TAs for hard problems). The midterm was easy if you studied hard. Also, study a week early for the final & redo all the homework problems for extra practice to get an A in the class.
He is a great professor who explains everything. His class notes are also very neat and organized. He can be funny at times too. I would recommend taking him.
Excellent professor with clear grasp of material. Conveys concepts in a straightforward manner, and extremely helpful in office hours. Also superb in that he'll teach you more advanced concepts if you show the interest. Take him if you get the chance.
He is the greatest math teacher of all time! tests are very fair- gives a good curve. he helps a lot at his office hrs. if you go there a couple days before the tests and ask about problems, he will do examples that are almost directly the same as the exam! it helps a lot! lectures are great and easy to understand!!! worth taking it!!!
Lewis makes simple mistakes a lot in lecture, but is very helpful with questions. He likes MyMathLab and uses it for all homework--making it impossible not to get 100% on them. He gives quizzes that are not particularly hard but usually doesn't give enough time to complete them. Tests are average.
This is the second time i take 21C. Compare to the one I had before him; he is much better. I like him because he recall the problems or methods that taught one class before; this help a lot.
Overall, he's a pretty good Bio Sci major teacher. Although he tends to stray off a bit on his own thoughts, for the most part he is clear and concise in his explaination of concepts. He's a nice, understanding, helpful teacher. Recommended!
He's a lot of fun, but sometimes he makes problems a lot harder than they really are. If you haven't taken calculus before this class, you may be a little lost. But if you have taken calc before, then this class will be a breeze!! Quizes are easy, Tests are not hard, and Lectures are not necessary.
I like his tests (ok, so I'm a nerd).
Interesting class. When they said its biosci based, its REALLY biosic based. which makes his lectures a bit confusing, because the problems he do in class are all about heartrate, blood pressure, drug dosage, and bacteria growth. cannot space out, you'll loose track of what he's talking about.
His class was okay. I don't really love calc to begin with... He repeats a lot of information in his lecture and constantly makes mistakes. If you are confused, go to office hours. Midterm was a piece of cake... the final was pretty hard. Make sure you understand concepts!
Good teacher. Very nice, but easy to fall asleep to.
The course level is in between the regular calc series and engineering calc series, so it's pretty weird. Lewis is ok, his midterm is way easier than his final. Homework is mandatory but it boosts your grade along with quizzes.
This professor is horrible! He makes way too many mistakes in his lecture. At first it seems funny, but after awhile its irritating. It makes you not want to come to class. HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! You should really not take this professor, take Kouba instead.
awesome guy...really really helpful and really nice. if you do the practice problems and understand them, you'll be fine. if you dont get something, go to office hours and hes more than happy to help you.
this teacher equals nap time for some reason his voice makes u fall asleep anyways hes an interesting teacher very clear voice but this teacher gives hard exams he will add extra variables to midterms and finals to screw u over his exams r hard i have to say
Lewis isn't very clear when he explains things. He gives all of the theory and proofs, but no explanation. He does count homework and have quizzes which is good because it pillows the grade. Tests are pretty ridiculous, but there is usually a gigantic curve which will surprise you.
Nice guy, lectures are pretty slow and boring, and thus lull you into a false sense of security for his hard tests!
He is a very nice person. Math124 was Ok. You can feel that he really cares about the students. And he gave us second chances to improve our midterms.Nothing to complain about.
one of the nicest professors at Davis. you just really need to know your algebra/differential eqns to take this class. the (inclass) midterms are long. but he lets us take them home to do it after handed them back. final is take home. if you need help, he's welcome to answer any questions (even test questions).
Lectures are disorganized and unclear. It takes him 10 minutes to explain a 2 minute concept. He focuses too much on the setup and review and not enough time spent on the new material. Examples are not clear, and he doesn't prepare us for the tests or even homework. I would have appreciated more practice problems. One discussion = 2 lectures.
this guy was difficult for me. he is very theoretical and there were few example problems. a bit monotonous. young guy. there were quizzes every week in section and no homework. i hardly passed this class. would not recommend him. kouba is so much better
Extremely knowledgable. Very helpful in office hours. Almost always went overtime with his office hours and always made sure that I didn't leave with more or any questions in my head. Also a very nice guy.
His class is not that hard, you just have to know what you are doing and pay attention. Office hours are great and he is great at clarify concepts and answering questions. All around a great guy!
He kind of rambles when explaining things in lecture, but if you go to his office hours he surprisingly makes it simple. Tests hard
He is a great professor! Super helpful during office hours or even willing to stay after class so you can ask him a few questions. He does use complicated examples, but always is willing to re-explain or send us the notes when he can tell we're lost. I'd totally recommend him for anyone who has or even hasn't taken calculus previously.
Great professor!
I have taken calculus before so I don't know what those who haven't think of him, but it might have been because I knew the material, or because he was actually boring but I was never able to pay attention in class so I pretty much just stopped going and did the homework at home and did fine, do the homework and go to discussion and you're fine.
Lewis is great professor. He's very nice and always willing to help and answer questions. Tests are easy if you study, but its only 5 questions on midterms and 10 on final so there isn't much room for error. He grades very generously at the end though.
I love Professor Lewis! He is so helpful during office hours, and so was his TA. Homework isn't graded, but we take quizzes every week in discussion based off the homework. His examples in class are sometimes overly complicated, however he can always tell when the class is confused and sends us copies of his notes or goes over it again the next day
You either love or hate Lewis, if you go to his office hours you'll like him otherwise you feel whatever about him. His class is extremely easy, I fell asleep during most of the lectures and still got an A in the class. Don't expect the curve to help you, because at most it will bump you up like 2%, but the class average is around 80%.
His lectures were not as clear as they could be, but his office hours are super helpful. Do all the review problems & be very elaborate on your answers on tests because his TAs are particular on grading. Fair tests if you put the time into it. His curve isn't too big but can help you if you're wavering between letter grades.
Dr. Lewis is one of the most dedicated researchers, and one of the most helpful teachers at UC Davis. Despite the fact that he is only allotted 50 minutes for lecture, he always covers a good amount of info. He is great at explaining things one-on-one, so office hours are a must. He is a truly good person who will give up his personal time to help?
Dr. Lewis is the best math teacher I've ever had, bar none. He made me feel that everything I've ever learned in math was finally coming together in one beautiful picture. I've never experienced that before with any teacher or any subject. It's hard to explain how awesome 17C with Dr. Lewis is. I looked forward to this class every single day.
Like this professor, he is really easy
Amazing professor. Makes math understandable. Office hours are really helpful. Relates math to biology so we can see the relevance. Nice guy as well.
Lewis is a very nice person. His lectures are hard to follow - this is no doubt. However, if you attend all of the discussions (mandatory), study, do the bookwork extremely carefully, getting a B in the class is very doable. An A will require much effort and will be hard. Go to his office hours if you want help, I sure did!
Great Math Professor!!! I might not have received the grade that I wanted but I learned a lot from him. You can tell that he loves math and he is extremely helpful during office hours!
A lot of the time, he'd need someone to correct him. A lot of teachers make this mistake, but he messes up way too much. His tests are not comparable to the practice problems he assigns at all. His tests are ten times harder. Spends too much time on the concepts, not enough on examples.
Great professor, If you're willing to put in the effort, you will receive a good grade and will learn alot. He's great at connecting all the various chapters. His office hours were extremely helpful, gives weekly quizzes He frequently puts up additional problems online and those are past exam questions. I got an A+ and I sucked at math before this
Fine not amazing not terrible.
He is okay. He gives hints for midterms.Final is kind of hard but very similar to midterms and additional problems posted online. just make sure you understand them. Also,do the hw and go to discussion. Recommended!
Lewis is my main man. You can tell that he genuinely wants us to learn so he takes his time teaching. 5/7 quizzes were group quizzes. Go to review sessions before exams, he gives a few hints for each exam. One of the nicest professors I've ever had, highly recommend!
Professor Lewis is amazing! Prior to taking this class, I had not taken math in 2 years, but I still managed to pass even with a terrible TA! His lectures are extremely clear, and he somehow manages to make math interesting because he is so enthusiastic about what he's teaching. I wish he could be my math professor forever.
Definitely one of the better math professors out there. His explanations are generally solid, and he gives fair exams. If you need help, go to office hours and the review sessions! He super cares about his students and always answers questions thoughtfully. Lectures were a bit disorganized toward the end of the quarter, though.
He takes the meaning of the title "calculus for biology and medicine" to heart, because that is exactly what we did in this class. Study hard for quizzes, because midterms and final will be heavily based on those and in the end they can make or break your grade. Very neat handwriting which makes lecture worth it, although he can be boring.
Tim is very nice, he lectured passionately but man, he did not give practice exams or anything, he gave you a ton of list of practice problems that barely show up in the real thing. Take him if you took AP Cal in high school, other than that, you're pretty much on your own. His TA's also grade relentlessly hard. He's nice and approachable though.
Weekly quizzes that gets more confusing as the quarter goes on. His lectures are pretty boring and he really focuses application problems (word problems) I'd avoid taking this class again because of this. Midterm and a final, with no practice tests given. Midterm was okay but final covered some material he hadn't taught.
Professor Lewis inspired within me a much deeper appreciation for calculus than I ever anticipated I'd have. He makes it sound so interesting and is so helpful both in class and at office hours. He wants the best for his students and is always so polite. Discussion hw isn't bad. I can only hope he will teach MAT17C so I can take his class again!
Professor Lewis was great. He was always very patient and helpful. While I do think the course material is easy on its own, he makes it very understandable and is always open to questions. Only gave on midterm and a final with weekly quizzes and homework. I wish my other professors in the 17 series were like him.
Very interesting class if mathematical biology is your sort of thing, and Lewis is a fantastic lecturer. My one and only complaint is that he spent too much time on the really easy stuff basic physics stuff in the beginning, and too little time on the new and difficult upper division math concepts at the end.
Lectures aren't the most captivating, but extremely informative. He doesn't do practice tests, and he takes the biology/math connection very seriously (the math is analysis heavy). Prepare to study A LOT Discussions have weekly quizzes and group wksts In short: Tough class, but he's a good prof and he's available to help very often on the way.
I liked his lectures and his notes are helpful, his midterms (2) were reasonable, but final was pretty difficult. He is very good and talkative and always open to questions. I feel as though towards the end of the class the material was rushed and he focused too much on simple problems. Lots of bio integration. But overall a good professor.
At first I wasn't sure if I would like Lewis since he started out with a lot of PPTs, but a few lectures in he started using the board a lot more (his handwriting is gorgeous). About 20% of the class is quizzes and worksheets, so that really helped boost my grade. The first midterm really threw me off, but I was used to his style by the end.
Tim's a great professor. His lectures in the beginning could be boring because he goes over the basic stuff a lot. He's very clear on what he wants you to know. He does not provide practice tests, but the extra problems he gives are very much like the midterms and the final. Lectures and OH could be boring but they're extremely informative.
Lewis is awesome! Great lectuer, so available to help - and very very nice. His tests are tricky with the bio application, but managaeable if you study. He is a class act!
Lewis is a GREAT math prof. Sometimes hard to follow, but definitely very thorough and his examples really help to substantiate the material to understand it. Beautiful handwriting too and great engaging voice LOL. No homework credit so everything is exams and discussion/quizzes. Exams are very fair, but tricky. GO TO CLASS and do the suggested hw!
Solid lecturer, tests have curveballs, but if you go to the review sessions (usually weekends, but if during the week, skip class to go) He gives you "hints" that tell you exactly how to handle the odd questions. Class isn't super hard, quizzes every week in discussion
I struggled through calculus at Davis, but Tim made me really love my last quarter of it. His lectures were well-organized, he had a clear schedule for what he would cover, and he was bright and engaging in every lecture. I'm so glad I took him and I'd recommend him for any class you can get with him.
Lecture is SUPER important because he likes to use his bio examples or ones VERY SIMILAR to them in his tests. Be aware that sometimes in his solutions, he skips steps or explanation, which is where I would get lost. His tests usually have some easy math-only problems and then his bio examples plus a curveball question. Otherwise a solid teacher.
Professor Lewis is probably your best option for any class in the 17 series. He really cares about his students (posts lectures & study questions, helpful in office hours, etc). His exams are manageable if you study for them. Curves the final class grade pretty good too.
This class is hard but definitely doable. My two big pieces of advice would be to study the discussion worksheets/study guides before midterms and the final. Also, it is VERY important to go to the review sessions bc he explains random and hard problems that were never taught but will show up on the tests. & Lewis is very into biological models.
Lewis is a solid choice but his midterms can be hard and TAs have a strict grading rubric. His lectures can be confusing since he uses the chalkboard and goes back and forth between problems. He does force you to think about the concepts rather than just the math. His first exam was really hard but it had a huge curve. He has extra credit.
On the first day of my MAT17C class, Dr. Lewis said that he would place a large emphasis on biological (word problem) applications of calculus topic such as integrals, differential equations, and eigenvectors/eigenvalues. He is a phenomenal lecturer and inspires you to see math as an interesting way to apply biology. Tests are difficult tho.
I loved professor Lewis, although lecture is lacking, use office hours to your advantage. Honestly I learned very little during lecture because it wasn't very organized, but at office hours Lewis is VERY CLEAR! Also tests mirror the practice problems he produces, so just do those and you will be fine.
Professor Lewis is the sweetest professor. He teaches better during office hours. You will really learn how to use biological applications in his class. His tests are fair and if u really pay attention in class do his practice problems then you will be fine.
He is a very nice and knowledgeable professor. He teaches you a lot during office hours. His lectures are very clear. Then if you pay attention to class, you will definitely understand the material. Some homework problems are hard, but he will take you through them during OH. His tests are a bit hard, but an overall score of 90 gives you an A.
Professor Lewis was so sweet and always in a good mood. I took MAT17A online bc of covid so it was a bit more difficult, but help is definitely easily accessible. Professor Lewis always did his best to make sure his students understood what he was teaching and never made anyone feel dumb like some other professors Ive had. Highly recommend!
I enjoyed class a lot with Lewis! I wouldn't say his lectures are completely mandatory to do well in the class but reading the textbook is really what helps in this class. Lewis was by far my best professor this quarter and he was really aware of the difficulties of remote learning. Definitely recommend.
He's awesome. Just like a cool dude. I'd never taken calc before and I did really well in the class (online). Do the lecture preps and take notes BEFORE his lectures. You'll understand it a lot more. The homeworks are SO helpful. Same with discussions. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He's the sweetest and answers everything no matter how simple.
The class was not too difficult. Definitely something you can learn just by attending his lectures, but the book does help for practice. The homework assignments are short and to the point. Office hours are immensely helpful and they work through problems with you. He is also quick to email back in case you have any questions.
Not only would he hold office hours to answer your questions, he will hold review sessions before midterms! I found this very helpful cause he gives practice questions like it would appear on exams! He will take the time to go over every topic from simple to breaking it down. He puts emphasis on bio and math applications which I thought were cool!
Dr. Lewis was a great lecture really clear about the material. The homework was annoying because the website was very specific on entering stuff a certain way. Discussion was pointless, my Ta seemed like he didnt want to be there and I didnt learn anything from it. Dr. Lewis has great review sessions and office hours are a must. Read the textbook
Dr. Lewis was so accommodating and caring towards his students. He is a great lecturer and is always available after class for office hours. He is so patient even when some students ask the same questions, and the TA's were great! If you listen to lectures (or watch them later at least) and do your group worksheets, you should be able to pass easy.
Lewis is great and super sweet. He cares about his students and the feedback we had to provide. There are four short tests which are spaced out every other week, and a quiz every week. I thought I was it was too much, but overall it helped me for the final. I did take AP Calc in high school, but I truly believe you can still earn an A without it.
A great professor who genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed and is willing to help. There was weekly homework, lecture preps before every lecture, weekly quizzes, 4 short tests, weekly groupwork during discussion, and a final. His exams are easy if you prepare for them, definitely recommend!
Lewis is probably one of the best profs for mat17 series from whats been said of other profs. Lectures are very good and understandable. He makes it easy to get an A by adding easy participation points and dropping quizzes and tests. He is also very lenient if you miss a test or something of the likes. Would pick Lewis again over the other profs.
Super nice professor and is always listening to his students. He will take into account the students concerns and will sometimes allow quiz retakes. Tests are fairly easy if you do the homework and review the checklist!
Prof. Lewis is hands down one of the best calc teachers I've taken. Grades are based on different components rather than just tests which I find super helpful. He is very understanding and chill. If you're looking to take a calc class, prof Lewis is the best in my opnion.
Dr. Lewis is an amazing and a very accommodating professor. He was one of the best math teachers I have ever had and I really recommend his class! Midterms can be challenging but they are fair. Loves the math-bio connection so watch out for that. Not much of a curve but not test-heavy weighting so a definite bonus. Will be taking him for MAT17C.
Great
Honestly, I took AP Calc so most of the material I was already familiar with. With or without background to calculus, you will probably pass regardless. He doesn't do heavy curves, like 1-2% at most from last quarter, but attend his office hours, attend his review sessions right before midterms and you WILL do fine/great. Wasn't a fan of webworks.
I LOVED professor lewis. He's really good at explaining things. The class wasn't too hard. Do all the lecture prep assignments - they really help. We had a weekly quiz which kinda sucked but not the end of the world. He also definitely was trying to help us all succeed which is nice. Great professor and he cares about his students.
His class was fair. Gave make up opportunities. Unlimited. His final was difficult, but his 3 short tests were manageable. He did apply a lot of bio applications compared to my current math teacher, but they were still helpful to real-life. Essential class to pre-med students. Keep up with lectures especially for a good foundation.
I had him my first quarter of freshmen year. He is a very good teacher, in that he answers questions and makes sure you understand. It is a tough class, but its a good class for incoming students to get an understanding of what college courses are really like. DO NOT MISS A LECTURE! ATTEND OFFICE HOURS! Work with other students, it helps a LOT
I wasn't a fan of the weekly Webwork homework as they were quite lengthy and annoying sometimes. He's a really sweet professor though and cares for his students. I think I would've done better if I paid attention in his lectures and attended office hours. I love how he gives 200 participation points which were really easy and helped my grade a lot.
Professor Lewis is great. Gives out good homework that applies to tests and quizzes. Professor Lewis and his TAs also held review sessions that really helped. Great teacher for math, highly recommend.
Lewis was a great lecturer but it his tests had curveballs and were often times very confusing. Probability was surprisingly difficult and grading as whole was a bit harsh. Webwork online homework and quizzes were also extremely frustrating. Beware of his lack of a curve.
Great professor
Excellent teacher, he made extraordinary slides and really patient with the students. Strongly recommended!
Lewis is a good lecturer with very organized and easy to follow notes. His exams are really tough though. The final was way too long and only 2 people finished on time in my section. If the exams had a more reasonable length, I would've gotten an A.
I'm currently taking Math 17A with Professor Lewis. We recently had a midterm, which I found unexpectedly difficult and felt unprepared for. Professor Lewis doesn't provide practice exams or study guides, expecting students to create their own. However, this only made the midterm more challenging and lectures have not been particularly helpful.
His attitude toward exams is non-sense. There is no practice paper or materials provided; you can only practice with questions on your textbook. The worst thing is that he kept saying that definition and proof of theorems will not be tested, but on midterm, 24/80 grades are about define and prove theorems. I faild my first midterm because of it.
We got our first midterm back and the average was 58%. Felt like his exam was super tough but he claims that it was reasonably fair. He addressed this issue but pointing out that it was our algebra skills that needed to be sharpened but I believe he should evaluates his teachings as well. He's okay but overall his approach to exams is questionable.
The average on the midterm was 58% which is really low compared to others. He said that he did not think that the midterm was hard, which I am assuming means that he is not going to curve it. He also only gave 40 minutes on the exam and there was a lot of questions so it is really hard to get through all of them properly.
If you think you're doing good in that class, don't even cause that midterm will drop you down like crazy. He doesn't even create study guides and it's up to you and your peers to create one for yourself which is just so weird. The midterms are honestly super long for less than 50 mins to complete it. Watch your back, shout out to my TA though.
Prof Lewis is incredibly nice, always helpful at his OH, and he responds online fairly quickly. Highly recommend the readings and practice problems. If you're having trouble, sign up for a co-class through the AATC. His midterms are tough, I expect the same for his final. He overestimated our abilities :/ *Only scientific calculators, no graphing*
Next to Dadel on being the worse, he has pre-lecture notes and rarely does word problems in class that you can work with him on. His exams are so difficult and he barely curves. No study guides, totally on you to learn the material and prepare for exams. No way of bringing your grade up if you do bad on midterms.
Honestly, he's a nice person. BUT as a professor, I have no words for his exams. Might tank my GPA, sadly.
He is nice but a rigorous professor. For midterms he gave us no practice problem but told us to make our own. While the other professor in the same quarter as us were given midterm practice AND 2 sided page cheat sheet, we were given nothing except a scientific calculator. Overall take him if you have good background in calc
He's a very nice professor, and is passionate about what he teaches. But everything is so conceptual, you won't be working with numbers most of the time. You'll be given "If a, b or c is a constant then what should ...." EVEN with graphing. Don't recommend him if you haven't taken math in a while. Overcomplicates things that could've been easier.
Professor Lewis is one of those professors who are passionate about his subject and his lectures are pretty fair and well taught. However, though his exams are “fair” to him. I say otherwise and his averages are proof. No matter how much u study or your calc background its never enough to receive a good grade. If u want depression take this course
Professor Lewis is a great professor. Calculus is hard so the exams are hard but if you study the material he gives you and actively practice you will do good. He gives a lot of partial credit on exams! He doesn't entirely base your grade off the exams either which I thought was nice. Would take him again.
so hard ;( very very test heavy even though he does give options outside of tests to get the grade up. Says he doesnt curve and the current average for midterms is around a 50 percent
Lecture slides are complicated and hard to follow, SO many word problems on classwork and tests, and hw often doesn't reflect the tests. If you can read a textbook and took calc in high school, that is what will help the most. Super duper nice guy though. Will never make you feel stupid for asking questions.
very nice and sweet professor, he actually cares about his students and office hours help a lot
Very good lecturer and seems to genuinely care about the success of his students. He provides lots of extra resources if you're struggling to understand material and he tells you exactly what to expect on his tests. 10/10 would take again.
good teacher, but at some topics he doesn't go into detail for example the chain rule. I only knew bc of class before. Test heavy but also his avg are always 70s and he doesn't seem to care to get them up. Overall a good teacher but lock in from day one if you want to do good on exams.
He sucks at teaching and a lot of the problems he goes over are the easiest ones Then, he goes and put the hardest ones on the exam and he can't properly explain some questions that students have and makes mistakes during lecture in which he doesn't notice but makes the lecture more confusing. His class are for students who have calc background.
Fair class, no practice midterms but most of the questions on the midterms are very similar if not taken from review sessions/lectures. No "trick questions", + tiny curve so don't slack off the first midterm and you'll do well! Professor Lewis was very helpful during office hours, get him! (this class is harder if you don't have a calc background)
Prof Lewis is a great instructor, he gives no practice tests for midterms/finals but he does send out a list of topics to work on and usually the tests are just like the homework/discussion worksheets. Tests are worth 75% of the class so study hard, I did have a calc background before taking this class so it may have been easier for me than others
lectures are very fast and confusing to listen to and take notes on in class because he always introduces a concept as an example or with an example. The concepts are never introduced in a basic form before getting thrown into an example. I found myself self-teaching myself most of the course and had to get a tutor to pass.
He teaches very well and has very nice hand writing his class was not that hard but the exams were kinda tough since he doesn't give study guides. His review session and office hours were very helpful. I struggled mostly with group worksheet my group never wanted to help so make sure to pick a good group.
Prof. Lewis has very helpful lecture and lecture notes, if you pay attention to the examples in lecture notes there are similarities to the problems on midterms. I wish there was more leeway on simple mistakes made on tests as Prof. Lewis often made simple mistakes in his own problem examples and answer keys. However office hours were very helpful.
Professor Lewis had very useful lectures and clearly taught the material. I highly recommend going to his lectures even though they're not mandatory because his lectures prepare you for the exams. His exams are difficult and he doesn't provide practice exams, but he provides the resources and support to do well. His curve was also really good!
He was interested in what he was teaching, lectures were at a good pace. The exams were hard and very rushed. The group work is important so make sure to get in a good group for your discussion section.
dr. tim lewis i am your biggest fan.
Dr. Lewis is nice but not an effective professor. His lectures were confusing, OH were ok, had to self-teach most. The first midterm was real tough; second one and final were better. Beware he doesn't curve until the end of quarter. Make sure to get full participation points, go to his review sessions, and do practice problems from the textbook.
Prof. Lewis is pretty good! Going to lectures and following along with the slides definitely helped. I didn't take calc before this class and I was lost in the beginning, but going to his office hours helped a lot. I walked in many times and just said "I don't get it" and he would explain concepts until I understood. Would 100% recommend him!
Professor Lewis is nice and clearly cares a lot about the material. However, unless you already have a strong background in calculus, I wouldn't recommend taking him. His example problems in lecture are either overly simple or overly complicated with little to no middle ground like you'd find on homework or exams. No study materials provided.
Professor Lewis is very sweet and knowledgable man however his teaching isn't the most effective. His notes can often be filled with so much information that it makes it hard to process the material. Examples from homework and class are not reflective of the exams, the ones on the exam are much harder and tend to look unfamiliar. D avg midterms :(
Lewis teaches you everything you need to know for your test during the lectures which is awesome. No need to read the book. He takes questions from his discussion worksheets Q's/optional questions for the midterms and finals, so do those. Super nice guy. During office hours one time, he gave me tea and we chatted for a bit. Midterms are long tho
Dr. Lewis organized the class and Canvas well, but in lecture, he focused mostly on concepts and problems that were simple and easier to understand, which didn't always help with preparation for the tests. Be sure to budget time for the homework! It's challenging, sometimes harder than the tests. The problems from the review sessions were helpful.
haha NO, i dislike, hes a good person tho
Lewis was a great lecturer, very good at explaining the concepts. I attended his office hours which were very helpful and he was very nice. The homework was oftentimes too difficult and confusing, and had little application to the tests. Otherwise he provided plenty of resources to succeed in the class. I struggled because I didn't take AP calc.
His tests are way too conceptual compared to the other 17c professors. Doesn't give out practice midterms because he doesn't believe in them. When I was studying for Midterm 2, I asked my friends who took other professors in 17c for their practice midterms and actual midterms and their midterms were WAYYYY easier. He asks too many conceptual q's.
I loved the included biology in class, he has very engaging voice. Amount of information each lecture was a bit crazy( 25+ slides). The midterms were honestly not bad. Review sessions are 100% needed SO GO. He is very kind professor and although theres not much of a curve, there is more than enough resources to study from. BEWARE NO PRAC TESTS.
His class is pretty hard to be honest. In 17A and 17B I ended both with 95%+ but first test on 17C I got a C. I wouldn't say the calculations are hard, it's more of how the content is confusing. It's the type of test you look back on and be like wow that was so easy, but in the moment, it was hard. Lewis is a very nice guy overall. ++
The lectures are really nice and straightforward. The formula sheets on exams are absolutely stacked, too.
Amazing professor. Interesting to listen to and goes at a manageable pace. I had zero issues with this class, until the probability. I feel like he is a better professor for calculus, than statistics. But that's at fault for this course going so weird at the end.
Amazing professor, very kind and explains material very well !
Dr. Lewis is the best math professor I've had. He really cares about his students, and wants to make sure everyone understands the material. He tries to tie in the biology aspect, which I found interesting. The midterms and final are 75% of your grade, which is a little stressful. Overall, he is a great professor!
Holy GOAT Lewis. Went from a C to an A after the final. That's all you need to know.
Wonderful professor, very down to earth guy. Nobody could explain the content of the course like he does. Tells exactly whatll be on the test, though he does put a big emphasis on conceptual problems in this class Lectures were a bit hard to follow sometimes but it's mainly the density of the content he teaches, office hours saved my soul.
Easy tests, but often long bio word problems. Multi & difeqs were easy, but probability w/out stats is hard. Minor gripes: errors in lecture, skips info for HW, no integrals. Curve: A cutoff was 89, B:76, C:61, D:50. Most chill, kind, good vibes prof, always smiles, laughs. Once protected 2 girls in a dispute with a Karen. Local hero. He's awesome
Fumbled on the final and lost my A but I really really liked Lewis. He does go slow in lecture which was nice bc he wasn't bombarding us with content. He provides lots of resources/opportunities and truly wants his students to succeed. also gave a small curve at the end and lowered the threshold to pass by a lot. Wish I could have him again
lewis was the best calculus professor i've had. super lenient and kind. final was challenging, but midterms were super fair. i would 100% recommend.
