A passionate, dedicated educator who focuses on student achievement and tools for success. He takes many different approaches until students get it and is available for help. In some respects this was an "outward bound" experience; he is firm, fair and is a tremendous support and encourager. Text is good but his online resources are incredible!!!
Professor was very helpful. I struggled with a lot of personal stuff that quarter and he helped to figure out how I could pass the class. He's extremely understanding.
i think tim did a great job instucting the class, he made the class interesting and fun. i really enjoyed myself
Col. McP. was a great teacher! He made class fun and did a great job interacting with the class. He always had time to answer questions and was easy to communicate with outside class and through e-mails. If you have to take Geography take it with Mr. McPharlin!
This class is not for slackers. However, if you do the homework and turn it in, come to class and participate in class discussions you will do fine. He is fair, understanding, a great teacher, open, honest and a wonderful role model.
If you want to learn how to learn, this is your guy. I wasn't sure at the beginning that I was going to like this class cuz he asks a fair amount of his students. Whenever I didn't understand, he was always avail for help and valuable insights. Most importantly, I got some great tools to use for other classes and he made the subject come alive.
McPharlin is a kind, caring, and flexible teacher. The best aspect about him was making his class student focused. He went out of the way to work with every student individually who requested or needed help, but he also made sure the class as a whole understood the material by introducing the material from different angles. He grades on effort!
He offers a ton of extra credit and second chances. He's very approachable and very helpful. You do need to pay attention and do your work and put in the study time, just like any other class. You will learn how the world works and you will learn presentation and thesis skills. I got a 108%. That was 12% in extra credit.
Col. Mcp is a amazing decaited professor. very understanding and wants to make sure all his students strive towards success and will ALWAYS! devote time for studnets who are struggling and need some extra help. I took his class and was struggling at the begging but i feel Col. McP beyond helped me and coached me on how to be a better student.
Col McP is an amazing professor. He helped me go from failing to an A+ in his class. He believed I could pass his class and I did!! He is very approachable, and wants to help his students. He is a wonderful teacher and will help you understand the material. I recommend his class to EVERYONE!
COL. McP is Awesome Teacher. Hardest part of the class is the 8 page essay, however he outlines the entire class and gives ample oppurtuny for extra credit. Class participation is pivotal and encouraged. If you like Geology than this ones for you i highly recommend Him
He claim's he "respects opinions" but really pushes a conservative agenda on climate science. One class on climate change he asked everyone who believed in "man-mad global warming" to raise their hand, which resulted in almost everyone's going up. At the end of the class when he asked the same question, only mine remained. And he's a little awkward
He has no agenda aside from encouraging students to think critically. Why show "Inconvenient Truth" and use a "mainstream" text if he is pushing that agenda? I recall the class exercise differently; having students form groups of alarmists & skeptics to defend their positions as did he. The main point I took away was the debate is far from over.
Class was breath of fresh air!!! He is all about education & not indoctrination (bottom line: critical thinking + problem solving = successful learning). As long as course expectations are followed you will do fine(be in class, participate in discussions, & get work in on time). Gave us tools to be successful in class, in other classes, & in life.
Great teacher who knows the material that he teaches. Very interested in helping students to succeed.
Truely dedicated to student learning and gives students lots of opportunities to get a good grade in class. promotes critical thinking instead of own political opinion
I did not learn a single thing in this class, but that may be because this subject bores me. You have to do a lot of work for a pols class but Col McP was a great person but overused videos in the class room. Simple class, take Col McP!
Col McP is a fantastic teacher who definitely wants his students to succeed. He gives you A LOT of opportunities to get extra credit in his class. It's also nice that he recognizes his students for doing well. :) He is very clear in what he expects and is clear in what he teaches, so there are no curveballs like with other teachers. He is great!
McPharlin was a great professor, gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and is interested in students success. Using the textbook in this class is very important and includes a presentation plus a 10 page paper at the end of the course. Overall, professor is great and helpful.
He is one teachers that cares about a students success. Which at clark can be rare. You must put forth a little hard work. Quizes are on what you have studied. Open book on reading comperhention quizes. One area I desliked was in class presentation but dueable. Great teacher. Truely.
I feel he is a very thoughtful and caring professor that loves teaching. He takes the time for his students and is open to all points of views. I would recommend this class to anyone coming in or back to college. I have learned a lot of great and useful things. I would definitely take another class of his.
Colonel McP is an amazing person. he is respectful and full of stories. I loved his class and how helpful it was. definitely take it if you're doing your first quarter at clark.
Col McP was exceptional about getting us to learn how to learn. He is a master of pushing students beyond our comfort zone to learn to be informed and engaged in our political system but was always available for help. You have to stay up on assignments but he offers extra credit when you don't nail every single learning activity! Well done...bravo!
He wasn't exactly the most charismatic instructor, and tended to be a bit condescending. However, he wasn't a poor instructor, but for the material being given, the difficulty was fairly uneven. He gives you a few days to do an assignment but only tells you before the due date and extends it only one day. Uncompromising and a bit unreasonable.
Given that this was his first time teaching this college success course under development, Col McP did a very skillful job!! Expectations were clearly laid out up front and he gave us tools to manage assignments; especially the capstone. When things didn't work as envisioned he kept us informed and extended due dates so not to catch students short.
Col McP is an awesome teacher who helps you learn how to learn!!! Before this class I wasn't interested in POLS. However, he made class engaging and interesting. The dynamic was great because he plays devil's advocate to heat up the class discussions! If you keep up with your readings and do assignments you will do very very well in this class!!!
Col McP is a decent teacher. He cares a lot about his students and their success. I have him for college essentials class which he is new to but he has worked very hard and is very understanding. The class itself is very easy with only a couple homework assignments a week if that. As long as you're respectful you'll have a good time.
Col. McP was not preparred for this class very often and stumbled through the lesons he was trying to teach. It was very disappointing because I was looking forward to this course for direction and help navigating Clark and what this school has to offer. He also couldn't remember what time or day we were to come take our final.
Terrible!!! This professor thinks he knows everything! I could teach this class better than he did. Please Please do not take this class!!
Brilliant! Hopefully I can post several reviews because 30 characters is not enough to share how special this professor is. The most creative I've had. Well laid out, excellently delivered and masterfully executed! This professor is a jewel and If you are here to learn he's your guy. I went into this class nervous. I now want to change my major:)
Col McP is a professor that everyone should have. I wish he taught more classes. I'm sad to see the negative responses because I know that he truly cares about the students. He made himself very available and gave us a very well laid out syllabus. It was very clear that he was there to teach and help. I would recommend him as a professor to anyone
Awesome class. He gives so much opportunity to succeed. He explained everything up front and took a few days so we felt comfortable. He gives extra credit opportunities and offers help whenever you need it. Great job Col.
This class is awesome! I learned so much and Col MACP is great! It wasn't the easiest class but well worth it!
Does he lay out clear expectations on 1st day of class and then walk students through course mechanics on the 2nd? You bet! Does he hold students accountable to those expectations? Indeed!!Also, we were all learning how to use Canvas for 1st time. So we were on a steep learning curve getting to understand how it worked. He managed this very well.
Col. McP is great at teaching this subject and I very helpful if you ask questions. His teaching is very clear and usually very focused. There are many class discussions, videos, lectures, and every week there is a student presentation. This class is easy if you keep up with online quizzes and assignments.
This class was simple but helpful. If you are a first year college student this is the class for you. there were many resources and information explained in this class and Tim made sure that everyone had their questions answered.
Tim was a wonderful professor. He really wants his students to succeed and gives them every possibility to do so. He is easy to talk to and ask for help from. The class is no problem as long as you read the book and take the tests.
very nice guy but his web enhancing attempts using canvas were extremely confusing and it was extremely difficult to keep track of what was due online or in class. It just seems like has has too many assignments instead of just boiling down the assignments to the essentials and focusing on comprehension of the course.
Like stated previously he doesn't know how to organize canvas appropriately and does not take criticism well. When students told him how confusing the website was he told them to learn to use it instead of listening to ways to make it more user friendly. He acted as if if was the students fault. Also has loads of excuses for everything.
i agree, very nice man and not only is canvas confusing but i had a hard to trying to understand what the class was even about because of how often we get off topic. thee is too much going on and not enough topic focus. i just don't understand. I learned next to nothing from this class and would have preferred a more focused and intense professor.
Unorganized and makes excuses. Lots of extra credit opportunities though and the online quizzes are easy to get As on.
He absolutely horrible teacher. He is very self centered he will put his two cents in thinking that they are "so" important. It's either, he's right or you dont talk. He is not considerate, and is very rude. Too many of his personal opinions, and excuses. he wont let your opinion be heard without him adding his own. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!
He wasn't sure how to use the web-enhanced website the class used to take tests or keep up on assignments, and constant glitching made everything a little confusing. He's a good teacher, but it just didn't feel like everything was completely thought out.
Col McP is a great professor! I definitely learned a lot about government and politics in this class. It's a pretty easy class if you do your assignments and take the online reading quizzes. There was a little bit of difficulty working with Canvas but he helped students to work through it.
He's a nice guy, however, his course can sometimes be confusing. It may be that he was trying out a new project for this quarter at clark but he sometimes seem unprepared.I didn't like how there was a student presentation almost everyday because I feel like we didn't actually have a lot of time with the actual teacher teaching. we often got off topic
The Col. is a pretty cool guy. You'd expect him to be super conservative, but he has some liberal points of view that are agreeable with. READ THE CHAPTERS, get on his good side, and do well on the comprehension quiz's and you'll be fine.
Col McP is overall a good teacher. GET ON HIS GOOD SIDE. Don't talk without the kush ball, do your assignments, and participate in class discussions. I hate reading the text book and hardly did, the quizzes are open book so not too hard. Tests are difficult but you only have a mid term and a final. He is a hard grader but overall I'd give him a B
This class was very unorganized at time, but there were circumstances beyond his control that made it so. He provides a syllabus with an outline and clear expectations. Follow it! Don't be afraid to speak up. There is no right or wrong. Very nice professor.
No idea why some of these reviews are so bad, because he is honestly one of the BEST professors I've ever had. He expects you to participate & pay attention (surprise! this is college). Do the reading & take all the reading quizzes & you'll be fine. Not a hard class if you put in effort, & participate. He made me love political science!
Overall experience was not good tried very hard but was clearly not always in the know with what was happening, feels fine with shutting down the opinions of students he doesn't agree with. Ultimately regret taking the class would not advise unless you like hearing why your opinion is wrong and why his is right. Online part of class "cluttered"
Exceptional class if you come prepared showed respect to peers!!! Very student centered focus...text concepts were always well connected to "real world". He doesn't force opinions on others but would challenge students to think critically when they brought unsupported positions into lively class discussions. Now I have a great interest in subject.
I really enjoyed taking political science from Col. McP. It was always fun to come to class and listen to the discussions. The class isn't too difficult if you pay attention and come ready to learn. Definitely do the reading as that will help you on the quizzes, midterm and final. Overall a great experience!
Col McP is seriously one of the most motivational teachers you'll ever have. His class is easy if you pay attention, do assignments, and engage in lively discussions. Quizzes are online once a week along with usually one assignment. Political Science never interested me before this. He makes it super relevant! Take his class, you wont regret it!
Col McP was a great professor! He was well organized and had clear expectations, which I found very helpful. He was eager to relate what we were learning in class to current events and was open about his opinions. You definitely have to put effort into his class, but if you do so he is not a difficult instructor. He cares about what he is teaching.
Colonel McP is a good teacher. Although he generally leans to the right of the political spectrum, he doesn't push his beliefs. The expectations for the class are clear and concise, and provides ample opportunity for extra credit. The class is very standard & basic, and covers common knowledge. I was bummed that foreign policy was not covered.
Col. McP was in general a good Professor who went in with too many things on his plate the reason for his slight disorganization was due to circumstances out of his control, and whenever something went wrong with the online enhancement of the class he would handle it rather well and give students extra credit points to compensate for it.
Over all a great teacher. Definitely has first hand experience on how our government functions especially with his 26+ years in the military. Really gets you to think about topics addressed through out the course. Follows the syllabus to a tee so keep it! Yes you actually have to do work in this class but you'll find out you might learn something
I switched to a different polysci class after the first week. This class is student driven. You read the book and teach the class on your section. There are a lot of videos. I dislike Col McP's teaching style. It's set up too much like a high school class.
Good teacher. He is more interested in students thinking things through than agreeing with him. Critical thinking is important to him. Be prepared to write a paper for the class. Expectations are clear. I got the impression that he is in teaching for the right reason--to make a difference.
Col McPharlin had a high school teaching style, however it was more self-taught. Class time was spend with just debates where 99% of the time, he would input his own opinion and contradict what people had to say. He wasn't challenging, but he wasn't super helpful or engaging.
Col McP took a class I was sure I was going to hate and made it interesting. When he says read the book, he means read the book. If you get a chance take the community course with ENGL 101 it really helps. Extra credit is easy and helpful for your final grade. Participation is a must in this class!
Professor McPharlin is an excellent teacher to take, because he is sincere and patient with his students and will work hard to make sure his students succeed in class. I would highly recommend him for anyone interested in POLS 111.
If you are looking for a “talking head” he is NOT your guy. He is much more of a coach. Engaging, student centered, and promoting critical thinking is how class rolls. Sessions typically begin with student presentation, then a concept from text, and wraps up with case study or critical thinking activity to connect concept to the real world.
He is very fair and thorough with what is expected in his class. If you do the work you will get a good grade. Col. McP encourages discussion, and discourse while remaining neutral, and keeping it on a productive coarse. I high recommend this class, and appreciated his passion. I understand politics so much more. Truly enlightening.
Class isn’t for slackers. Students are expected to put 12-15 hours outside of class each week. Because he has a masters in teaching there is much more focus on methods part of learning. He gives many tools to put in your tool bag to succeed in school and life. Those who figure this out enjoy his class…those who don’t struggle or give poor ratings.
He helps you think critically and form solid opinions, and most importantly, back up your opinion. Really enjoyed class discussions. He respects everyone's opinions and challenges (nicely) you to think about why you feel that way. He'll ask you to "unpack" an idea to explain it your reasoning. I like the learning community a lot; helped greatly.
I never have attended a class that was more structured than Colonel McP's class. Although I really blotched up my grade due to my own mistakes, I still passed. There was never a blind siding assignment, the course was well layed out. Lots of extra points available. No distractions in the Colonel's class, I really enjoyed his style of teaching.
Tim McPharlin is very kind and passionate about government and politics; he knows his stuff well! He is very helpful and is easy to contact at any time on Canvas. With discussions in class, he is very respectful of other students' opinions and is very open to hearing what students would say on a particular topic. He offers a lot of extra credit!
Presentation Term Paper Weekly Quiz Felt he was new to teaching this subject. Big heart. Loves teaching. Cares about students.
Col. McPharlin is a great teacher and very engaging with the students. He is very helpful but you have to ask for it and he gives many opportunities to get extra credit. If you do most of the assignments and some extra credit it is an easy A.
Very great professor. I definitely recommend. Tests are simple and are online, open book. Pop quizzes aren't too difficult mostly have the same questions as the tests. Good lectures short and sweet, mostly consists of student presentations. Very helpful! Would take again!
The Colonel is a great guy, and he actually has a passion for what he teaches. His classes are engaging, and he manages group discussions very well. He gives you AMPLE opportunity to recieve extra credit, so dont go asking for a grade boost. You will be required to give a 9 minute presentation, and attend a city council meeting.
AWESOME teacher; took a subject that I had not interest and made it come alive!!! Was very clear in syllabus about what was required for course. Reading book is very key to the class; 45% of grade. Class was a blast and he connected text concepts to "real world". If you do the reading and assignments, 10 - 15 hours a week, then it is an easy A.
This was one of the best classes I have ever taken, hands down. McP is extremely organized and clearly lays out week by week what assignment are due. As long as you read the chapter and complete the open book online chapter quizzes, you will ace the class. He made the class interesting and enjoyable and I wish I could have him teach all my classes.
Col McP gave a lot of extra credit opportunities. And if you stay on top of things, its an easy A. It is hard to fail this class. I wasn't interested in this class t first, but definitely ended up enjoying it a lot!
A good teacher, but a poor grader. He does not follow the rubric. If he isn't satisfied with the points you've lost in one category, he will take from others. You can get an easy A if you stay on top of all the (many) assignments. The writing project is very structured, and definitely not at the college level. Bad for developed writers.
Loved taking Mr. McPharlin's class. The lectures were interesting, and he did a great job of applying real world events to our course. He offers a lot of extra credit (I got over 100% in the class), but the material is still challenging and interesting. Anyone that puts in the work and participates will be successful. Take this professor!
Overall a pretty good teacher. He is very clear with his instructions and will help you if you ask. I found the conversations very interesting and the conversations insightful. I learned a lot from this class. If you put in effort you will easily get a great grade with ample extra credit opportunities just in case you mess up.
Colonel McPharlin is a great professor. I highly recommend his class to everyone. His class is less about politics and more about critical thinking, which is a fundamental part of understanding politics. He gives out lots of extra credit to those who deserve it, and he is extremely careful not to offend anyone with his opinions.
Col McP is a very respectful teacher. The class is more student driven and he encourages student input in discussions. How successful you are will depend heavily on reading and understanding the text as well as participating in class. Tons of extra credit opportunities available.
Col McP. is not just a teacher but a motivator, be ready to gains critical thinking skills, ability to express your thoughts and opinions, and how to get your words heard. the grade you EARN is up to you, if you do not pass it is because you chose not to. does not give away grades but gives every opportunity to be among the A list.
This teacher made learning about politics SO awesome! He gives TONS of extra credit, has very intense and up to date topics to talk about in class and is passionate about what he does. He pushes you to work HARD. Out of all the teachers I've had, he is one of the only ones that KNOWS how to teach and help you remember what you learned. I miss it!!!
In my personal opinion I would NOT take this class. The professor does not have enough time to discuss course work, you must read in order to pass, he is a VERY picky grader, and class discussion and participation is a main part of your grade. Students must do a power point, and one student presents every day of the class till the quarter ends.
I liked his class I just had a hard time understanding him so I had to talk to my peers a lot because I felt as if I couldn't really approach him as well as he thought. He also has a lot of tests or "pop quizes". Make sure you READ THE BOOK and keep up with him too. I hope this helps!
Col McPharlin is an exceptional instructor. He distributes grades according to the effort each students puts into the class, and gives many extra credit opportunities incase participation is low or to make up for any unsatisfactory assignments. Col McP is very understanding and will give help to those who ask. I highly recommend his class!
The Col expects mature respectful behavior. talking during hid lecture or blowing bubbles would be rude. col gives a lot of easy extra credit and if you show an interest, he is definitely on your side. Col McP is pretty relaxed as long as everybody respects the basic principals of mature behavior in class. definitely a good class, easy A for me.
Stellar web enhanced class to learn how to learn & how to think critically! He has a variety of methods to stretch students. Grading: 25% HW assignments, 25% 9 reading/6 pop quizzes, 25% midterm/final exams, 15% participation, and 10% current event presentation. He highly encourages class participation to develop & support our own ideas. Take him!
Col McP made politics very interesting and easy to comprehend! He gives a lot of good feedback and is more than willing to help students. The quizzes are online and open book which was really enjoyable. There are also plenty of extra credit opportunities. Take Col McP's class if you want learning politics and government to be fun experience!
I loved his political science class. Col McP is a great teacher! I highly recommend taking his class. The class is easy if you pay attention and read the textbook. He gives very knowledgeable lectures and is willing to help if you need it. I have made really good friends in this class, its a great environment. Attendance is mandatory!!
I learned more about the government, current events, and politics. Over all, the assignments got a student more involved in the community and aware of the political world. The only thing I personally was scared of doing was the oral presentation, but it's easy to over come that fear with a great teacher and fellow students. I highly recommend!!!!
You don't learn anything from his lectures, and if you have an opinion that is different than his, he will shoot it down. He also doesn't take criticism, and will likely say that the criticism that i give in this review isn't true at all. You learn nothing from the class, so just sit there and be silent, read the book, and youll do fine.
Col. McP is a great professor. His service alone in the Air Force makes him a more respectable person. He leans more toward the right (conservative republican). Unlike what others have said, he is open to opinions but they have to have some credibility. Discussions in class are great. He bases his teaching around critical thinking and hard work.
Just show up, participate, and do the assignments (which are easy), and this class is a breeze. The chapter quizzes are online, open book, and great study guides for the pop quizzes, mid-term, and the final. Just take the quiz twice, print them out and study.
I really enjoyed taking Col McP's class. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities to help boost your grade. There are also open book online reading comprehension quizzes. He gave some pop quizzes, but as long as you do the online quizzes, you'll be fine. If you can't make it to class, just make sure you communicate that with him ahead of time.
To do well in this class you must be prepared to engage in classroom discussions and think critically about your homework. As long as you are willing to be active in the learning process and put in the work, the class will be rewarding and informative. Also, due dates and criteria for assignments are structured and clear, so don't fall behind.
This was one of the first teachers I had at Clark and is still probably the worst one I had. He doesn't like running start students even though they all need his class to graduate. He picks favorites and awards them extra credit just because he likes them. If he doesn't like you he'll grade you down. Had to fight with him on every grade he gave.
He has great intention and helps when you need it . Lots and lots of extra credit. I got over 100% in his class and overall just an awesome professor, would highly recommend to anyone.
Col McP sets his expectations clearly and early in the term. Show up to class and be involved. If you do, you'll be rewarded with some pretty interesting discussions and an opportunity to sharpen your own critical thinking skills. It isn't an "easy" class, but he isn't trying to fail you either. He gives you plenty of extra credit opportunities
Awesome Teacher. Got to know the Col pretty well. Very accessible outside of the classroom. Interested into getting to know his students. Multiple extra credit opportunities available. Participation & Attendance are key to good grades. Current event project which was pretty fun. Overall great class & teacher.
Pretty much a basic teacher, teaching a basic class.
To be fair, this class is probably an easy A if you're a Gary Johnson supporting Libertarian that doesn't believe in climate change. He says that doesn't grade based on opinion, but he blatantly picks favorites and is a lot less harsh on them. I swear everything about this man annoyed me. I ended up dropping the class in order to save my GPA.
Tim, or Col McP as he liked to be called, was an easy instructor, but his class was rather disorganized. There was a lot of independent reading and he claimed that participation was a grade but it was never put in the grade book. The main grades are the midterm and final, but they're multiple choice and have the same questions from the chapter quiz
