SOOO BORING...but kind of funny and test aren't all that bad
good teacher who is very knowledgeable...tests arent too bad they are straight from his notes.
he is such a cool guy...but very detailed on tests and no study guides
lots and lots of notes to take
he is horribly boring and very uninteresting. he makes history boring and grades worse than an english teacher. i fall asleep all the time. history should be fun, and after taking this class i want to change my major.
Very boring, and grades hard on his papers. Has a thing about the papers being in Active Tense. But tests are not too hard, sright from the notes, maybe on question from book. Don't get the book, its a waste of money.
Teaches stuff irrelevent to the class
he tends to go off on tangents a lot
Gives helpful study guides for exams. But be careful, there are very few grades, so if you fail something, you might not recover.
I thought he was an okay teacher but his papers and his tests could screw you over big time. I only had 3 tests. Not much for grades. WATCH OUT FOR PASSIVE SPEACH IN YOUR WRITING he loves taking points off for it.
Thinks he is an english teacher and isnt, you'll want to kill yourself in class, 5 pages of notes a day, makes you write papers on different tenses, really thinks hes an english teacher..unless you have a death wish RUN FAR FAR AWAY
Okay so I have a really hard time staying awake in this class..its boring. But his tests are SOOOO EASY!! It's straight from the notes. Take good notes and you'll be fine. He has this weird active voice thing on essays but essays are only one page long
worst class I have EVER had, so boring i wanted to stab myself with my pencil just to have an excuse to leave. Is a nutcase over using the active voice in papers, I'm an english major and I still can't follow his writing guidelines!
Class was very long and boring. Just sat in the chair at the front during whole class - made many people fall asleep during the class. Difficult tests because he jumps forward and backward in history, which make note taking difficult
His tests are STRAIGHT from the notes; take GOOD notes and study them well! Requires 2 40-page-or-so readings, and you write a one-page essay about it in active voice. He will teach you active voice, so know it! Only 4 tests in the semester, so pass them!
extremely boring and confusing....very jumpy
Great professor, really knows his stuff. Very funny and slightyly skaterbrained. Tests are straight from notes. Straight forward tests. very helpful both in and out of class.
Tim millers one of the best teachers there at the school - always helpful and always understanding. It is absolutely amazing how much this guy knows - ask him to speak to you in more than 3 languages - cause he will.
He is a really nice man but a terrible terrible teacher. He speaks so fast that he is onto the next thing before you can write down what he said in your notes. No test reviews or review sheets. No review for final.
Boring very boring but also soooooo EASY! He gives tests from the notes and you don't have to read that horrible World Civ Book at all. 3 tests and one final so make sure to do well on all of them. Besides that easiest class I've taken this semester.
bad comments = lazy students. Easy class, informative lectures, easy tests. What more could you want. Take notes and you'll be fine.
Great teacher. Funny, easy to talk to. Tests are straight from the notes - come to class, take good notes, you'll do fine.
u may have to work some in his class, which i know is unheard of at SU, dont belazy and u will be fine. figure out how to write in active voice ,helps w/ bonus points(people need to realize that the essays are for bonus even if he doesnt call em that)
Oh come on guys! Miller is awesome! and yes! he makes you sort out info and THINK a little! great prof. if you want to dive into history. if your an "easy A" person he might not be the right guy for you...anyways he's great!
Notes had nothing to do with the test and he makes you write pointless essays. However, if you get on his good side you should do fine.
it's true, take good notes and you'll be fine. He does talk a lot, just keep writing! And he is willing to help out of class and has a great personality!
Very nice guy- easy A if you're on his good side- but I sure would have liked to have learned more of what I signed up for. He got off on a tangent so often and wasted too much time on background- we barely touched the actual topic (Epidemics in Europe)
booooo
Great professor! The tests are based heavily on lecture, so there's really not much need to read the book. He's extremely helpful on the essays, and is always willing to meet w/ and help students. I've always absolutely hated history but I actually kinda like his class.
Good teacher but doesnt give very clear directions for papers, always in a good mood, and doesnt give aot of material.
this guy talks so fast and gives a lot of pointless lecture notes. just write down what he says about the subjects he writes on the board. don't need book for class. papers are impossible to get points on, has nothing to do with content, just grammer. talks in german sometimes= annoying.
Great prof. Easy to deal with, easy going. If you have trouble its your own fault. Very willing to help.
Good teacher. Easy to get an A if you go to class and take good notes. Tests are straight from the notes in class. You have to write two diffucult short essays outside of class, but they are for extra credit.
class is usually interesting.....the man is just hilarious once he tells a story..1 paper 2 tests with study guides good class
GREAT TEACHER! Honestly this was the best history class I have taken. I took him over the winter a few years back for 101 and loved it. Easy A. Than i took him for 102 And he is great. Easy class. Just go and write down stuff on what he writes one the board or the handouts. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!! Even though he does babble on sometime and talks in Italian AND GREEK, he is a great teacher. Easiest class i've ever taken.
i hate this class. It was terrible.
Tests are straight from notes, don't even bother reading the text book. He's very passionate about the subject and knows his stuff. Just go to class and take notes and you're fine. He gives short essay assignments about grammer but they're extra credit. It is pretty boring but not hard at all.
Sometimes he leaves topics with out explaining. Made it easy to take notes and tests followed notes well.
this guy should be an english teacher instead of history. He is a nit-picker about those stupid ENGLISH assignments. I think he was boring as well
i was a history major, but the total horrific nature of his class caused me to change my mind. his class is boring. he sits there and reads at you half of the time and is honestly, the worst teacher i have ever had.
Woa, this class was really boring. This professor spends mosst of his time out in left field. He is always talking about unrelated Italian words, reading from his notes, or trying to get his overhead pen to work. Also, is really picky about English grammer. Tests are hard too.
I thought it was going to be horrible, 2 hours everyday (Summer classes) but the class is just SO GOOD. He is very smart man. He compares world religons in the most interesting way. This class is super intersting, very recommended. Don`t even have to buy that expensive book, just take notes.
Yeah. bring a pillow. The man will lull you to sleep.
Very BORING..Should be an english teacher not a history profess.
His lecture's usually do not make any sense. He jumps around with his dates all the time and then gives you 10 chronological questions on the test. He'll randomly attempt to speak in Latin or another language. When he grades papers he is more worried about the grammer then whether the answer is actually correct.Long story short - he's pretty terrible.
could be one of the worst teachers i have ever had. talks about absolutely nothing in class, can be a big jerk, hard class, dont take him if you can help it
Avoid this guy if you can. He falls behind in his lectures by rambling off on random stuff (like latin words ?!) .. and therefore types up his upcoming lectures so we can read it in the off time. Sound ok? He types in 8 pt. font, and stretches in all the way the edge of paper. Very difficult to read. Tests? Chrono. questions will make u or break u!
very boring, gives out a list of terms and somehow you need to catch every single thing he says in class. avoid if possible.
He gives you a five page study guide that is in no order what so ever, and the material you are tested in is based on how much you can catch from his rambling. He is a nice guy, but does not teach or explain material well. Completely fits in the stereotype of the "nutty professor."
he blows
I had him for 101 and 102... i read a page out of the book. Its a good book, you wont use it. Don't buy it, you'll be wasting your money. Hes a nice guy though, take notes and review them after class, thats how i got an A. No essay tests, all multiple choice- awesome. The essays he gives only help you (just dont skip them)
Don't really need any of the books. When he goes over the active/passive stuff pay attention. The papers you do with this take advantage of the opportunity to turn it in early for him to fix. Study guides are ridiculous. Exams are multiple choice. YOU HAVE TO STUDY!!! I ended up getting an A you really have to study alot if history isn't your topic
He is the WORST teacher I have EVER had!! I took him my freshmen year and only 4 people out of the class got better then a C. He was unclear, unorganized, and boring! The whole class hated him and we even complained about him to administration. DO NOT TAKE HIM, YOU WILL STUDY SO HARD AND STILL DO BAD, take Ackerson instead... HES GREAT!! :)
Walk away now. Thinks he is an English teacher and includes english grammer on exams! Rambles during lecture and gives list of random key terms and expects you to remember them all for exams. No study guides. I wouldnt take him again...get another professor
He's a good guy, study his study guide and you'll be fine. His essay is for extra credit!!! This makes his class way easier than all the other Hist classes
class is boring, but you need to go in order to get his lecture notes. tests are extremely easy.
Study guides are helpful but he jumps around alot and lectures are difficult to follow.
Best history teacher ive ever had. I even switched my schedule around to have him next sememster for 102. He's funny when he doesnt try to be and just record the notes if he goes to fast, but normally he gets excited about Rome and when he likes what he's teacher then it's easier to learn.
Miller is a pretty good teacher. He gives you the study guide before you take the notes so you know what to take notes on. Can ramble sometimes, but its ok be cuase you already know what you need. Don't buy the book, you won't use it at all.
i must say i hated him at first. he is kind of scatter brained and confusing. but i grew to love him. hes a funny man and really means well. use the study guides he gives you as an outline for your notes and you will do fine on the tests. but listen closely because it all depends on his lectures.
Lectures boring but outlined beforehand so you know what to take notes on. Makes you write a paper in only active voice only which is stupid and it's 'extra credit' but you have to do it. Don't buy the textbook you wont use it.
AWFUL. Lectures are very dry. He knows his stuff, but can't teach it. Makes you write a 3 page paper in only the active tense -completely detached from the course. Lost his voice halfway through the semester and lectured us the rest through a karaoke machine. BOGUS.
If you can help it do not take his class. He diverges from his lectures all the time and tells the class about his trips to various places. He likes to speak in Italian and when he does it does not pertain to anything. Avoid him!
Im sure that he means well, as with any professor. Detached from the subject matter. Requires an essay on an English tense that I have never heard of before that class, which he graded impossibly difficult. Nice guy, but avoid if possible. Class should be in English too, not in Italian
Could be in your best interest to find another professor..Seriously
AVOID HIM
nice prof who really knows his stuff, inspired me to pursue a history minor. ppl are exaggerating in these reviews; he's extremely helpful and invites you to utilize his office hours. he even let me make up a quiz right on the spot one time. he teaches you italian words b/c he's teaching roman history. easy to get along with, good sense of humor.
He should be an English or Italian teacher. Makes you write a ridiculous paper. Speaks in Italian randomly throughout class. He's funny though, so pick your pain.Don't bother to buy the textbook either, because we don't open it once, all his tests are based off his lectures.
Amazing teacher. Lectures are sometimes unorganized, but he'll explain anything and everything. Don't buy the text book, all the tests are off of his lectures. Little homework, one paper. Prepare to take ALOT of notes. He's the best history teacher I've ever had. Tests are easy. Definitely take him!
If you can speak Italian he'll love you. Interesting class but seriously unorganized. I think I may know more about French Rev then him. Show to class and do your work then you'll do well. He goes off on the wierdest tangents though.
You may think this class will be a breeze because he only makes you write one paper, but his lectures are extremely hard to follow. The paper he makes you write has to be all in active verbs, if you don't understand this then don't enroll. He gives quizzes on it and tests on active verbs, avoid him at all costs, save your money.
Goes over more than enough to do well on tests from lectures, but insists that everyone knows what an active verb, passive verb and verb to be is. Takes the verb lessons a little to far, almost as an english teacher would. Other than the verbs, an okay professor. Also sings a lot of national anthems from France and Spain.
this teacher was easy as cake, i mean the tests are straight forward, just look over the terms and they are on the test in the order he gives them. but he is weired as can be. he looks like a students teacher but all he ever talks about is how beer is good for his voice and he will think you can speak chineese just beacause you are asian.
WHAT A CHARACTER. funny guy. He gives you all of the terms that are going to be on the tests and as long as you take notes about those terms then it's easy to do good on the exams. He likes to babble on in his lectures but will clarify anything you dont understand. Don't buy the book, as long as you go to class you'll be good. 1 paper 1 page=easy.
I LOVED THIS CLASS!!! Teacher is extremely funny and likes to ramble. However his tests are straight from his lectures and he gives you all of the terms for the test ahead of time. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! you wont use it Just pay attention in class and you will do fine.take him!!! I got a A in the class. He willhelp you with the paper that is 1-2 pgs
He's a very good teacher, but can be kind of boring. You only have one paper to write the entire semester. He trys to be funny and interact with the class. Maybe a bit senile but he cool. You don't really need the book either. He does go on random tangents in different languages however. Overall he is a cool guy, and I enjoyed his class
He is an average teacher. He knows his facts very well and is passionate about this subject. He makes you learn the difference between active verb, passive verb and the verb to be. He quizzes on these and can be either easy or hard to learn. His class can be boring and he always gets off topic so he is hard to follow.
very easy, gives all the terms that will be on test
Not a bad guy, lectures can be a little confusing. tests can be somewhat difficult but once you get the verb thing down there basically easy points. only have to do 2 two page papers.
VERY confusing lecturer! He jumps around a lot, but he does give you a study guide for the two tests. There are very few grades in the class, and he's a huge stickler for grammar in the papers. He's very picky about everything for papers, some students even went to the writing center and still struggled. Doesn't always answer your questions.

Dr. Miller was very passionate about his subject so he knew what he was talking about, a lil hard to follow @ times! DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! Come 2 class evryday, take notes & you'll be fine! ASK QUESTIONS IF CONFUSED! Learn active, passive and verb to be verbs. Will help revise papers don't be scared to ask for help! Wonderful professor!!
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! he is not the hardest teacher but he he so difficult to understand. his lectures have no structure and you never know what topic he is talking about. he doesn't follow the syllabus and doesn't tell you when he changes dates so you might study for his exam for the wrong day. he will not discuss grades he gives you on the papers
Dr. Miller was pretty cool. I hate history and was dreading this class. If you can't memorize things then he's not your man but basically he gives you a list of terms you need to know for the test and as long as you show up for class/read the lectures you're fine, you don't need the book at all! And unlike other 101 classes NO MAPS!!!
Definitely kept the class entertaining by the things he had to say. Like others said, he does not stay on topic. His papers are the worst because he grades them on a specific grammar curriculum which i have never followed in my life.. not even my english teacher made us do this. tests are easy just get through the papers
He was alright...The class definitely was boring to go to because he talked at you the whole time, but it was a relatively easy B for me. Just make sure when he gives you grammar corrections because a lot of his grading is based on it.
He was okay. When he lectures he rambles when discussing a certain topic, and he jumps from one thing to another. He also has a grammar policy when writing papers and makes sure you know active verbs, passive verbs, and verb to be. He even quizzes you on this from time to time and includes it on the tests. The tests aren't that hard. Only 2 papers.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He was horrible. I would have had straight A's if it weren't for his class. He makes you write a paper and if it has 5 or more grammatical mistakes you automatically fail. Basically what I'm trying to say is DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. And if you're already signed up with him GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN.
AWFUL!! If you do not like to speak english do not take this class! He starts to ramble on in different languages and then exspects you to know what he is saying. Also, if you do not know 'proper' english you will fail his class becasue he gives English quizes not History quizes. If you feel like taking english again take this class if not GET OUT!
Run. seriously. My GPA went DOWN because of him and his unnecessarily hard grading. He teaches his 102 class like some 400 level English class. 5 grammar mistakes on a paper = failure. he rambles in greek as if we care about his childhood. just avoid.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is the worst teacher ever. All he did was talk about himself and his tests are not what he teaches. I used to get straight A's in history but with him I got a C :(
Well, he's not the greatest teacher to have for a 9:00 class, but he is a dedicated teacher. If you pay attention in class and follow the syllabus, as well as know basic grammar rules, you should do fine and receive an A or a B. Probably a C, let's be realistic.
Everyone complains about this class, but it was so easy for me. If you have a hard time listening and taking notes, don't take it. He basically sits in front of the room and talks. If you zone out you're gonna be lost. Pay attention! He rambles, but he's a really nice guy and there is literally no homework ever. Just take notes and listen!
Horrible teacher. I'm decent when it comes to English and grammar, but I had no idea what he was talking about as far as grammar goes. His lectures are pointless. Half of the exams are grammar questions that don't make sense. Good luck.
He is awful. I already hate history, but he made the class worse. Don't get me wrong, he is a great, sweet man but all he does during class is ramble on and on.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He will help you if you need it, but is stubborn when it comes down to it. Just avoid taking him at all costs.
We never used the textbook he told us we had to buy. His lectures were all over and hard to understand. He would go off about things that he would not test on.He likes to send home lectures for students to read for homework, they are usually 6-20 pages of size 10 font that is typed like he speaks.I love history, but do NOT suggest him.
one of the hardest history professors at SU. If you can, Avoid him! His lectures are long and he rambles What I found helped me was to record some of what I missed on my phone. if he doesn't lecture in class he sends home LONG lectures for you to read. Likes to hear himself talk but tests aren't too bad if you go to class. 2 papers 1 his own book
Please for all that is holy avoid this professor! Had to drop the class due to his weird way of teaching. He rambles on and on about random stuff that is totally unrelated and not even on his tests. Be prepared to read about 30-40 pages of pointless lectures for each of his three tests when only about 30% of it will probably be on the test.
I've never written a review of a professor until today. There are no power points or any types of visualaudio aides what so ever to aid your learning. The whole class is literally him talking about stuff which generally doesn't pertain to the topic at hand. If you read the 7-30 page lectures you'll be fine for his 3 difficult exams
As a history major, i may have been more prepared for Miller's teaching style than the other reviewers. Try not to be too scared of him, I loved his lectures and stories. 2 tests and 2 short papers. Overall, i thoroughly enjoyed his class and i would highly recommend taking an upper level history course with him.
Although many students said that hard to take Dr. Miller's course. However, I think even you are not understand the content during the class, you would able to pass the exam with average grade or higher, if you spent enough time to read the lecture and follow the term list, which he give to us. Paper for this class is not require too many page.
While the work load is extensive, it's manageable. Tests are pretty easy and he usually highlights what will be asked on the exams.
Do not take this teacher. His lectures in class are pointless, his tests are hard and have nothing to do with what he teaches, his essays on the his book are so difficult cause all he cares about is grammar. I used to do good in history until I got him. Good luck if you have him for this class.
Tim Miller emails you 17 page lectures to read and know and then will barely talk about it in class. It is a lot of self learning. In the class he just sits there and talks about irrelevant things. He makes you read the textbook for the course yet he does not teach any of the topics. He also makes you read his own book which is terrible. RUNAWAY!!!
Teacher is very tough to understand his lectures unless you read the 20+ pages he emails out. Test are extremely tough and usually minimal information on the test is shown throughout the lectures
The worst teacher I've had so far. He makes no sense during the lectures and talks about random things. He just likes to hear himself talk. He sends out a million lectures for you to read, so if you want to put in tons of effort go ahead. I had way more important classes to pass rather than this one.
You have to teach yourself every lecture. He gives you about 19 pages of terms you have to know and for each test a print out of about 4-5 lectures you read and find the 100-200 terms per test, along with a book you have to read and test on that HE wrote and a textbook that he does not even go over!
Professor Miller goes on long tangents nearly every class that have nothing to do with the material being learned. If you take him expect a ton of reading and teaching yourself at home. He knows he has bad ratings and still doesn't change his teaching style and blames his students for the overall terrible grades. Mades you read his book, not great.
During in class lectures, he would go off topic a lot. If the lecture wasn't in class, he would send you a really, really long typed lecture to read, which were not fun. Tests were based off terms from the lectures and questions from the textbook and a book he wrote. Expect to have to teach yourself. Would not recommend.
Easily one of the finest professors I ever studied under. Complete command of his subject matter and an engaging, anecdotal style of lecturing which makes complex subject matter far more relatable. And he's a wonderful gentleman of character - would highly recommend him to any current or prospective student.
Easily the worst professor I have ever had. Lectures go off topic easily and often. Tests are given on lecture information, not book information, so if you skip a class you'll probably be lost. Doesn't use MyClasses and hardly responds to emails. If you're looking, I'd suggest another professor...
DONT DO IT!! TAKE CHAIKEL!!
Lectures are NEVER on topic, a waste of time and money and claims it's our fault Makes you read his book and refuses to use MyClasses. He gives you hundreds of terms to teach to yourself and memorize each test, often times a lot of terms are missing from his lectures. Good luck if you need extra help because he is no help. Do NOT take his course!
not a bad guy just a TERRIBLE TEACHER. he is scatter brained and very old school. doesnt use canvas and tests are extremely hard to study for
If you are picking your teachers right now. Don't choose him. If you already have him, then I'll tell you how to pass. Read the lectures and highlight them everyday. Match the terms to its definition. Set out time each week to read Worlds and the Leprosy book. Everything is truly self taught. He is not a bad guy; he is just awful at teaching.
Miller is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He sends out typed lectures usually ranging from 10-20 pages and expects you to read 2 of them between classes. Doesn't teach new material in class. He also makes you buy and read the book that he wrote which is very dry and boring. Blames students when he doesn't present info clearly.
terrible
Miller teaches from his own lectures. Each lecture most always has 10 pages or more with 30+ terms and each test consists of 5 lectures. So you will be spending A LOT of time studying if you want to do well. If you HAVE to take his class, the terms he gives out for each lecture can be found on Quizlet which saved me a ton of time. Good Luck!
He sends lectures and talks at you in class and you are expected to memorize a lot of terms according to the lectures and take tests on them. Grading is based only on tests and two essays. He makes you read a book that he wrote about Leprosy.
Turn back now. The entire course is you reading 10-20 page lectures that he emails you and you must figure out and know all the terms yourself because when you "go over the 30-40 terms" in class, he only gets two done and rambles on about random things till the class is over. Quizlet is the only reason I passed. Also, get ready to learn leprosy.
Only gives about two or three actual lectures in class throughout the semester, and the rest are typed up and sent over e-mail which you are expected to read. Never opened my textbook for the class. About 100-150 terms you have to memorize for each exam, but only about half were on the test. Use Quizlet. Avoid this class if you can.
Starts off the semester verbally lecturing and slowly ends up sending you printed up lectures (12+ pages per chapter) and expects you to read and teach yourself. There are easily 50+ terms for each chapter and 3-4 chapters are covered on an exam. Avoid him if you can and take Hannen!
Started off the semester with a verbal lecture, and did not define any of the terms on the list he gives you. Then, he sends out 3-6 lectures at a time that are typed up and easily 10-12 pages. Does not clear things up and goes off the subject many times.
He focuses more on grammar than he does the actual history lesson. He has a series of quizzes that you take on grammar is on those and even on the exams. Lectures are a legitimate waste of time, he talks about nothing and you have to basically teach yourself from the 20 page typed lectures he gives you. Also disrespectful and rude, stay away.
The class is really not hard. He give you lectures to go read and review for exams and quizzes and if you just read and study the lectures and pay attention in class, you will get at least a B. He just goes on and on in class but just study the lectures and you will be good. His exams are straight from the lectures so just read what he gives you
Hands out lectures first day of class for whole semester. Lecture handouts are 10 pages long that have no spacing or paragraphs. So, you are pretty much reading 18 page properly typed lectures each week. You have to pull out all the terms yourself because lectures are just time for him to rant about anything that is not your question.
I was always good at history until I took this class. Miller is ridiculous with the lectures, 18 pages, small font, and no spacing. You have to know over 500 terms for every test, and he wont help you. My class average was a 50% and everyone failed every test. Its a miracle we passed. I dont recommend unless you want to fail.
