Makes a hard class like Bio-Calc fun and manageable.
Easy class if you put in some time, however, his attitude is less than pleasent if you work with one on one, several people dropped because they felt offended by him.

He is great, has lots of energy, and is always willing to help. I also love that his hair always looks like he just got out of bed.
He was VERY VERY hard. He teachs well and is a good teacher when is comes to explaining information but his grading method was harsh. In addition to his grading method, he gives out a GREAT deal of homework. So if you're willing to spent the time doing hw all night than he's the teacher for you.
I got A's on majority of the test and my overall grade at the end of the term was a B. I'm really upset with the results because I spent countless hours working on my homework with many students and did really on Homeworks.
Material is challenging but teacher is fair. If you put the work into the class, you will actually learn some math! He preps you well for quizes and tests and he is often available for help.
He was just overall a great instructor got me up to speed with what i needed. He is clear with his instructions and is willing to help if you need it. Because of him I coded into math 115.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. This is the worst teacher that i have ever had. He is: unclear, unorganized, disrespectful, and does not listen to his students.
Really, really helpful! If you don't understand, ask...

Tim definitely gives a clear presentation of material and ESPECIALLY what to expect from a quiz/exam. Lots of work is an understatement, but if you do it, you will learn a LOT. <I am convinced that the teacher on Daria was modeled after him!>
I am a horrible math student but I loved his class. He is funny and interesting and he encouraged me to really try rather than just roll through the course with a non-passing grade. I liked him a lot. And vermiculture rocks.

cmon lets be honest..Tim is a great nice guy, but i had him for a class he doesnt usually teach i think..he was difficult unclear and grading was terrible..had to force an incomplete and redo it..when i stopped going to his lectures i finally passed whats that say? do not reccomend for stats
Tim has alot of energy.Knows his stuff.Isn't always clear in class but it is spelled out in the workbook.I advise not skipping lecture.LOTS OF HW. be prepared to spend hours a night working on it.grading was harsh, teachers assistant. unclear on what to expect on hw, quizzes nearly every week. overall, i learned alot.great teacher, great guy.
Tim is always very concise in his speeches and this is honestly the first time in history in which I've been able to understand Math. I can truly tell you that I now enjoy working through math problems, and this is all due to Tim Payer and his teaching abilities.
This professor is not helpful and the class is very confusing. The lectures are not clear and it's very easy to make mistakes, but he won't tell you if you've made them, you will just see very low scores on your work. He loves to knock points off for every tiny mistake. Test and quizes are hard but the homework and labs can even out your grade.
TIM! this guy is awesome. Super helpful, always in his office hours(he pretty much lives there) He will drop whatever he is doing to help you you just have to put forth the effort to ask. You can also see him mobbin around in the humboldt hill sometimes too! stay up with the HW&LABS
He goes through things way quick and his lectures dont go along with his hw he assigns. Be prepared to do TONS of hw. Most of the time he is unclear about a lot of the stuff like he aspects you to get the new material quick even though most of the time its confusing.
Nothing will make statistics pleasant or easy. However, this instructor gave good lectures to supplement the text and workbook. He made it very clear what material you'd need to know for the exam. He allowed us to have some notes for all the exams, too. There is a lot of homework, but you get a lot of points for it. So do all your homework!
Payer starts the class with a great workbook layout. You don't have to take many notes because it is all there for you- This makes it easier if you miss a class, as well. Very accessible and easy to talk to. Will slow down in class if topic gets moving too fast. Very thorough.
I really didn't like Tim as a teacher. He was unorganized in class, and was very unclear in the way he explained things. I would suggest reading the textbook...it's clearer than his lectures.
Great teacher. He is really helpful when you have a question and will explain it perfectly. The only downside is all the homework. :P
Tim is a great teacher the fill in lecture notes keep you engaged in the lecture. The practice quiz's are the same as the actual quiz's with different numbers. Tests are pretty much a collection of quiz's with a little more. If you are not as confident with math have him check your labs BEFORE you turn them in. I got 20/20 on every one that way!
Tim is by far the best Professor I have had hear at HSU. His class is NOT easy and he gives lots of homework that can take 3 or more hours every MWF plus labs. But he is willing to help anyone! He is a super nice guy and changes due dates to help the class achieve maximum knowledge. Stay up on the Homework and you'll get atleast a B for sure. :)
Agree with other posters, you need to do all the homework to do well. Not the easiest material but this guy is real nice and approachable, very easy to ask questions too. I would recommend Tim. Good prof.
Such a good teacher. I wish all my teachers were as prepared, helpful, available, and organized as Tim.
Always in his office if not teaching to help you. Lots of work assigned but stay on top of it and you'll get a good grade. Doesn't require a textbook except his workbook that is exceptionally detailed with all the info you need to complete HW and study for quizzes and tests. Recommended even if you hate math.
i would enroll for this class, there are weekly quiz's and two exam. There is online homework which is very easy. The two exam there is a prep packet that he gives and is very helpful not cheat paper well taking the exam. And for the quiz's theres practice quiz that are the same as the real thing just different numbers. But you don't have to study!
Best way to pass. He really knows all the pitfalls of calculus.
Tim knows what he's talking about at times. He only uses the workbook and the material is really intense. He doesn't answer everything straight out which can get a little annoying but he repeats stuff a lot.
Tim gives you all the tools necessary to learn calculus and pass. He is knowledgeable, clear, and helpful, but you gotta do the work.
Calc and biometrics. Most helpful and knowledgable in his arena!
This is a hard one because he is SUCH a nice guy and very approachable and obviously enjoys doing math. Unfortunately he seems a little scatter brained. He gets tripped up easily although how could you not when there are dummies in the class offering up incorrect suggestions. Because he's so nice students often walk all over him and its annoying.
Really nice guy; if you don't understand something go in to his office hours and he will help you until you understand. Sometimes it's hard to get the gist of things during lecture but the homeworks are really helpful and if you can do them and the practice exams you can ace this course! You don't have to buy a textbook but bring his notes to class
He is fast paced but really knows what he is doing and very helpful. He is always in his office ready to help!
Following his step by step book makes everything so easy. By far the best math teacher I have had, rather than teaching a book, he would walk you threw every problem per step. He is very reasonable about situations that come up, if class has to be missed. Great Job TP!!!
Horrible teacher for teaching calculus to science majors. expects you to figure everything out on your own. Don't recommend taking math 115 with him.
Mr. Payer is incredibly helpful and easy to talk! He is not the professor to make you feel stupid when you have a question. He also is great about getting to know his students and where they stand in the class. Two thumbs up!
Tim is an amazing professor that really wants his students to pass. If you are doing poorly in his class, it is your fault as he is readily available to help you in his multitude of office hours and via email.
He moves through material fast and there's a LOT of homework, but it's a very doable class and he's extremely helpful and goes out of his way to make sure you understand.
This guy is the best math teacher I have ever had! He makes his own book which is extremely detailed with pictures illustrating how to use the software and type in code. All of the quizzes and Exams have excellent preps which are for the most part exactly what will be on the tests. This guy has more office hours than I have ever seen to help you
Tim Payer is an awesome instructor, he is really open to questions. He writes his own book for the class because it is cheaper for students that way. He has the BEST office hours of any professor, EVER! 8am-5pm M-F unless he is actively teaching a class. He really does care about his students learning.
Tim knows how tedious stat 109 is and the workbook (no txtbk needed) is laid out to be as clear as possible for your convenience. Never seen a prof so available in office hours for Qs. He is smart and knows the material very well. Gives you all the tools you need to pass with a B or A. He lets students talk during lecture which is annoying
TIm is one of the most approachable people on campus and is very helpful. He wants everyone to pass the class and tires to make stats not so bad. Do the homework!
Good teacher when he has something to work with, ie. his lectures are good but when you try to talk to him it feels so socially awkward it's hard to breath sometimes.
First math class I've had in a while that was so engaging. I'm lucky because our class was only about 20 people so you could sigh under your breath and he'd ask if you had any questions. Overall, a very passionate and wise professor. He left no stone unturned with calculus and I looked forward to his class. His text book is only $25 by the way!
Tim is an amazing teacher and person. I had him for biostats and he would do all that he can to make sure his student's understood the topics. The labs are pretty easy but annoying because entering codes suck, but he makes it really easy for you. He gives extra credit opportunities and lots of practice exams. I would have him as a teacher again.
Tim is one of the few professors I've looked forward to having again. I first had him for stats and then again for Calculus. His teaching style is very specific and straight to the point. He does not beat around the bush with anything and is very helpful outside the classroom. I passed both classes even though I was worried about those classes.
Tim Payer is an amazing instructor. He is always in his office and helpful for tough homework assignments. He created a workbook with everything you need for the class which is way cheaper than the book. when you buy the workbook your online hw fees are included. He is a little introverted but easy to chat with.
This man lives and breathes math!! Before this semester, I had scraped by with a C in MATH115, and previously had to take remedial math courses (even before entering college!) needless to say I was no math major. He made me like math! Did I mention his office hours? Pick a day anyway he will sit down and help you. One of the best teachers at HSU
Tim is the best professor at Humboldt ! Has the BEST office hours ! Is ALWAYS willing to help you out & is extremely understanding with students and how stressful school can be, so easy to talk with it ! Yes you have to put in work for the course but as long as you do your homework and labs you are guaranteed to pass the class !
Tim is a nice guy and has an amazing office hour schedule. The downside is he makes a lot of mistakes in his lectures and moves way to fast with out clarity of the steps he is making. If you seek help he will tell you everything looks good, then your answers will be wrong. The work he issues is a lot harder then the lecture and tests even harder.
Tim is what all professors strive to be. His patience is infinite and he will try his absolute best to help you understand biostatistics. Most importantly, he is one of the most friendly and caring people on campus, the reason I come to class.
Worse professor I've ever had. Very rude and condescending. He is intelligent and proficient in his field, but what he doesn't want to have to do is actually teach. If you are the type of student to ask questions and go to office hours for extra help, Tim will make you feel like an idiot. Be prepared to have your self esteem lowered.
If you are willing to show up to class and do the work, you'll do well. If you slack off and don't do homework, you will NOT do well. Tim sets up this course for success and spells it out, and it is up to you to meet him halfway. For me, this was an easy A, because I put in effort. I know many people who didn't take this class seriously and failed
I had him for STAT 109 and CALC 105. He expects much from his students, but he really wants everyone to succeed. You have to work for a good grade and pay attention in lecture, but he is very understanding. Almost always available for help in his office, and he really knows the material well.
Gives 5% of final grade in EC, available in his office to help 20 hrs/week and he genuinely loves stats and wants his students to succeed. Lowest quiz score can be re-taken & lab attendance not mandatory. If you apply yourself he gives you every opportunity to succeed. Hardest class ive ever had and I got a 95%. Hes also pretty funny. take him :)
Tim is the man and I'm very glad I had him for my last math class ever. He has a lot of passion for math and was extremely helpful whenever I needed it. If it weren't for him I probably wouldn't be passing stats.
Having written the entire workbook/textbook himself, Tim is extremely knowledge about the material. While a little awkward in getting to know him at first, Tim's office hours are a valuable asset. Be prepared to invest time into coming to class and doing all the example problems.
EVERYTHING is lined out for the semester in a book that he wrote himself! Tim is a great professor; there is A LOT of hw. On a weekly basis, expect 3 hw assignments, lab activity due, and a quiz. However, he has around 20 office hours, so he is very willing to help! He provides multiple quiz & exam preps which are great. He allows 1 quiz retake too
This class is all about the hw. The things you learn for the most part won't be that hard, but the workload is very intensive; there are about 30 hw assignments! Tim is accessible outside of class for like 20 hours so take advantage. The quizzes are weekly, there's clicker quizzes and 3 exams but everything has prep work for which is great!
Tim is great! He teaches a tough class to people who aren't math/engineering majors and does it in a way so you can really understand the material! I was so scared to take calculus, but Professor Payer made it a breeze! He is available in his office basically all day everyday and loves to help!
I was in same position as you, looking for the best rated professor and boom, I came across Tim. he has a 4.0 average, 52 reviews! must be a hell of a teacher! I usually don't write reviews but I decided to spare you're college soul. Heed my warning HIS curriculum is ridiculous. 5 assignments per week, no quiz mercy. Take Michelle she's way better.
Tim is a great professor. His lectures are hard and the homework is 5x harder than the notes AND the exams. He really prepares you for exams and quizzes. He is always in his office when stated and will sit down and help you with your homework/studying. 10/10 recommend
I love Tim so much. Stats is hard, and he's always in his office when he says he'll be, ready to give you a pat on the head and tell you that you can do it. He's so kind, and so helpful, and has boundless patience for the endless stream of questions that he's assaulted with every day. He wrote his own textbook, and free pdf version. Thumbs way up!!
Tim is a fantastic teacher. His stats class was very difficult but he has lots of office hours and is always available to help. He is very patient and always motivating you to do well. 5/5 from me
I looked into every professor teaching this class and figured with the reviews Tim had that he would be the best option. I was wrong. The homework is almost impossible without office hours and if you don't go to lectures with the $55 notebook you will be lost without recovery. He's nice and understanding but if I were you I'd take anyone else.
Really compassionate & helpful teacher - the subject itself is hard, but hes a dedicated & diligent teacher. Extremely efficient in responding to emails & has ample office hours. Really really nice guy!
While Tim's class was difficult, he is an amazing instructor because he is there with you the entire time. He is always there during office hours and will walk you through every step if you have questions. He obviously wants his students to succeed and does everything in his power to create a welcoming environment for all learning types.
10/10 best Tim, would Tim again
Had Tim for Stats and Calculus. He's a kind professor, and great at answering questions. Homework 2x a week, and a quiz once a week, which was in my benefit. He really knows his stuff, and is happy to help in and outside of classtime.
Tim is a really sweet guy in class, but one on one he comes off as rude and will talk down to you. Doesn't take into account that we have other hard classes during the week because every week we have 3 homeworks or more ,1 lab and 1 quiz. If you get one bad grade it will drop your grade 2-5%. that builds up. Would not take again.
Just no. Blazes through lecture and doesn't go in depth into the problems or formulas. So much homework its absurd. If you want to actually learn in class, and not have to endlessly grind outside of class just to get the basics, steer clear.
Professor Payer is amazing! He really made me enjoy statistics as his notes and way of explaining was very clear. I appreciate his effort to be clear and helpful when it comes to explaining concepts. I would definitely take another stats class with him!
Tim Payer is a solid choice for stat109. This class is a very heavy and difficult course, in which you will need to keep up with all of the HW's, study for quizzes, and make sure you get help on the weekly labs when you need it. He's a very tough grader, but he's always an email away for any questions you may have on any assignment.
A cautionary tale. Maybe his in person class was different, but online is not the way to go. If you do all your homework you will pass, nothing else needed. Homework is over 1,000 points in canvas. But this also means battling the homework program for your answer, and he WILL NOT help you. Be aware of that.
If you wanna stress for the whole semester take this class. I have never had a class in my life with this much work and being such a tough grader and knick picks everything you do. He expects you to do everything his way if not your getting not just half off you will get a couple points off. I took math classes for summer and this is worse.
By far the worst and most stressful class I have took and its just a intro class. So much homework you will never be able to keep up and he does not care. Be prepared to drown in homework. He is the toughest grader I have experienced as well. Pretty sure its impossible to get a 100 on an assignment because its not his way. Its ridiculous.
STAT109 was the hardest thing i've ever done and i've done hard stuff b4. This class requires 3 HWs per week (2-3 HRS each) and a lab that requires you to enter code into a statistics computer program (these labs can take a few hours to a whole night to do) and a quiz/exam. USE THE QUIZ AND TEST PREPS IN CANVAS AND LEARN THE FORMAT 4 HIS GRADING!!!
I love Tim!! This was my third time taking him, and I wish I could take him again. This class is pretty difficult (I failed the first time and had to retake it) but I truly believe Tim does the best he can to ensure everyone passes. I HIGHLY recommend printing out the notes before lecture and copying everything he writes onto them!
I was nervous to take his class bc of past reviews but he is kind & knows his stuff. Ive never felt dumb when asking Q's. He doesnt handhold or assume you dont know the material. Math is my hardest subject. The hw & labs literally take me a whole day to do.HW does NOT guide u. Take notes in priority: HW, review practice Quiz, lectures & youll be fine
this class was awful, if you can avoid taking it do that. i've left class with a panic attack multiple times. this class is the most stressful class i've had here. good luck if you take it. there are 3 hw assignment a week 1 lab and a quiz. be ready to put a lot of hours in this calls if you want to pass.
Tim really wants students to succeed. He understands that the majority of students taking STAT109 are not focusing on math. Expect to work hard. There averages 2-3 homework assignments a week (with unlimited attempts) and a lab. Do homework early (it is all posted) and bring questions to class. Show up to lass and do the extra credit - it will help
STAT 109 is a very challenging course, but Payer is a professor who genuinely cares about you and your success. He is incredibly accessible and will answer any of your questions in a very timely matter. You will need to attend class to learn, but video lectures are posted for extra help. He provides the textbook for free. Great guy.
Tim wants everyone to succeed, and goes way out of his way to make the class accessible for everyone. He's available outside of class, is empathetic , and likes to crack jokes. He gives way more on his formula sheets than most professors ever do and tons of opportunities for practice, and a lot of explanation and step by step instruction.
I have Tim for Calculus and Statistics and by far he is one of the most understanding and accessible professors I've had at this school. He is also very approachable. Stats is a heavy course, but he gives amazing study guides and practice quizzes/exams. If you're willing to put in the work, you will do just fine.
If you take the time to complete all homework, review the quiz preps, and study the mock exams, everyone can pass. Professor Tim has a lot of extra credit assignments and is one of the most available and patience professors in office hours.
Not for hands-on learners or those who need to try a problem on their own to learn it. Lectures are essentially copying everything he writes and he skips steps/goes pretty fast.
Tim was so sweet and caring! He is super fair and allows some retakes. The homework is my open math and only one assignment about one a week. He had two extra credit opportunities too. He is really good at explaining things too. I would highly recommend.
Tim was a great professor! He always responded promptly to my emails, and when I was struggling towards the end he made an exception and allowed me to retake a test from earlier in the semester. The class is very hard, but if you pay attention and do all the assignments, you should be alright.
If you are going to take Biostats, be ready to spend about 6-9 hours a week outside of class working on homework and other assignments. Also be prepared to do the weekly closed note lab quizzes, as those are usually graded harshly and also seem to cause most of the 'grade struggles' that stat students experience. Stay on top of homework.
Tim is great! But, he is not very easy to get help from. He's so talented in Stats that I think it's hard for him to imagine not understanding the material. Don't loose hope, weeks 3, 4, and 5 are the hardest. The class is kind of backwards, it gets EASIER as it goes on. Be prepared for a coding-heavy lab every week.
Tim is possibly my favorite teacher ever. He cares so much about stats and helping students; sometimes I would email him with a question at 11pm and he'd answer immediately. Sometimes concepts are confusing when he first explains them, but Tim is always willing to articulate them in different ways and is always available for office hour questions.
Tim does NOT teach very well. He gets into arguments with students and often does the problems wrong and then gets into arguments over whether he is right or wrong. Tim does NOT explain topics well while teaching and if you are confused he will just move on and direct you to office hours instead of answering your question in class.
He doesn't teach at all, the practice exams don't match the actual exams, and he's absolutely useless about the projects were given or any questions. Bro can't explain anything he's just like it's so obvious read the paper
Professor Payer is passionate about stats and genuinely wants students to succeed. The class is challenging, but his detailed study guides, practice exams, and unstuckstudy make it manageable. Attend class, do the work, and you'll learn a lot.
He's a really nice guy, though he teaches the material in a very outdated way. SI and Library couldn't understand his methods. So your only option is to go to his office hours. If you plan to take him, make sure you have the time in your schedule to make it over to BSS. Personally I choose my classes so I don't have him.
Tim is a good professor overall. He cares about his students and frequently advertises his office hours if you need any help in the class, but he doesn't seem to understand that math doesn't come easily for everyone. Though I struggled greatly in his class, I attended office hours almost daily and still managed to pass with a passing grade.
