its a fun class, but he thinks everyone in the class is going into PR
Will only learn your name if you kiss butt, grades on if he likes you or not.
He treats this basic course like it is your capstone! NOT FUN! Take someone else
He was awesome! Very nice, humorous and helpful!
Stay away.
Not as boring as he appears!
one of the best profs I have ever had. class was very challenging but worth it.
he talks about HIMSELF the whole class time. Plays favs.
Great prof. Learn a lot of if you put forth the effort, PR major or not.
could offer examples, but doesn't

Does give a lot of work but its not busy work
Unrealistic expectations, so much work you can't do justice to any one assign.
Expect a lot of work (not busy work) however YOU will learn so much.
boring, too much work, he thinks he knows everything
Great Professor...knows what he is talking about and always willing to help. Class is interesting and fun.
Lots of work and boring lectures. Does seem to know his stuff though.
Plays favorites....talks about himself way to much...makes the class harder than it needs to be..picked poor clients for class project...avoid this prof if you can
Tim is a nice guy, he gives lots of time to complete work. The experience you obtain from serving a real client is great.
BE PREPARED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CLASS, TESTS ARENT TOO BAD THOUGH!

Great professor that is a professional. Taught me what it was really going to be like in Public Relations and inspired me to keep going in the major. Lots of hard projects- but they're realistic and make you realize you can make it when you graduate.
Very vague, but a good prof anyway.
he knows what he is talking about, willing to help, has favorites(prssa members, go to his events for brownie points
I've had him as a prof before and liked him then. He's very clear and helpful. Assignments were very straightforward and practical for real world experience. But Dave Matthews?! Come on, there's much better music out there than that! Ha! Ha!
Smart & nice. Knows how to teach PR. I learned a lot from his class! Be prepared to do a lot of work, but if you get a head start on your library case and have a good group for the client case, you'll be fine! He uses Blackboard which is a big help!
knows what hes talking about, will help you with anything you need. very nice! definatly wish i had him before i was a senior so i could change my major to PR!
Good prof, knows what he is talking about and everything relates to the reak world
Good professor! Easy to talk to, very personable. A lot of work, but you learn a lot from it. Can not be lazy, does require a lot of work but it pays off. Highly recommend!
SUCH a sweet heart! Just do your best and you will get a good grade - no tests, just a final that is easy if you go to class.
good prof, easy.
Took in spring ~ grades incredibly hard; squeezed 12 weeks' worth of work into 6 weeks - no breaks at all. Don't take in the spring if you don't have to.
Great prof, even with the lame jokes :) He'll help you more if you're in PRSSA (he's the advisor) because he knows you're more serious about PR. but great either way. Remember the definition of PR and throw it around a lot on the final and you'll do fine.
Here's the truth kids, I'm doing well in the class, but this guy is EVIL. He even ADMITTED he treats this class like it's your only one! Plan Book, 10 pg paper, 20 essay question mid-term, and a comprehensive final..and he means just that! GET OUT IF YOU HAVE OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES!
Hands back work so you can improve not just your grade but your understanding of the assignment
Love him! He is a great guy and it is obvious that he knows what he is talking about. I really learned a lot from his class and I am definitely going to try to take him for any other courses I need in the future. He also expains what he wants very clearly, you never feel like you're in the dark.
He was okay, was better in other classes.Seemed very blunt, not friendly this semester.
It's a great class if you're a PR major, but many of us were not. Nice guy, helpful, but he treats it like it's your only class. I don't think i've ever had to do so much BS busy work in my life.I went from a person who didn't care for PR to a person who never wants to take another PR class, EVER!
He was the best professor I have ever taken. He has a lot of life experience, and truly knows the world of PR. The class is a lot of work, but it is all useful. If you attend class and work hard you will get an A.
He OK. But from what I've heard from other students, there are other Profs that are better. Prof Penning is really into himself although I think he knows what he's talking about regarding non-profits. Not sure when he's talking about cruel Corporate America! (The real future for most in PR!)
OH MY GOD... if you like to know what's going on while you're taking a class, don't take penning. He's really unclear about what he wants, and then he won't explain why it's not what he wants. He feeds us a lot of BS about PR, and pretends like we're all PR majors... so not true :(
He was a good prof, if you want to be prepared for what will be expected of you in the future, take his courses. They are work but they prepare you for what you will be doing. Good guy. He is a prof that actually cares that you learn.
Great guy. Knows what he is talking about and what he wants. It's a lot of work, but totally worth it. You feel very prepared for a PR future when you leave.
He was the best CAP prof I have had so far. He defnitely knows what he is talking about and he is very helpful. I would recommend this prof 100%
Unbelievable ego. Out of touch but thinks he knows everything. Real blowhard.
very helpful class...lot of work, but you get a feel for PR when you're done. he talks about himself a lot, but to his credit, he has a lot of experience. project is large, but you get plenty of time for it
Penning is a great guy, he knows his stuff and he is willing to share all of his work with students. he is a really busy guy but he is always willing to accomodate students. overall i would deff take more classes from him.
Fabulous prof! There is a paper and a plans book that is a large project. He will help you every step of the way, which makes it easy. Picks random students for daily oral quizzes over textbook chapter assignments. Guest speakers are thrown into the mix to get an idea of real world PR. All in all a GREAT class & a better understanding of PR! :)
OK class but He loves himself. Definitively arrogant.
This guy really knows his stuff. He is willing to answer any question. Come to class because he randomly picks people to answer questions!. You do a campaign for an on campus group that is time consuming but rewarding. The final exam is rather tricky.
Teacher is extremely arrogant. Talks about himself all the time. Picks 3 students at the beginning of class every day to quiz on the spot. Grades on a Check plus, check or check minus...DO NOT take if you have not taken 115
I don't think this professor is arrogant-he is proud of his accomplishments. He does talk about what he's done, but usually to explain something. He is extremely helpful and knolwedgeable. The class is demanding, but so is the world of p.r. If you can't handle a demanding class, you won't like working in p.r. Take him if you want to learn.
he is one of the BEST professors i've had at GV. he knows exactly what he's talking about, and is very sweet man. lots of readings though.
HE knows what he is talking about, and makes a 3 hour class go by really fast. Not the easiest grader, but if you are taking this class as your actual major, you should want to learn and do good work anyways. Suggest him for sure.
do not take with him if you have not taken 115.. he is not willing to help you at all even though it's not a required prereq. He is very arrogant and I dreaded going to his class every day because of his condescending attitude.
Not the best teacher I've had at GV. He's very cocky and arrogant and he's always right. The book has wrong information and your experiences, if any, don't help. Why? Because he's the only one that's right. Everyone else is wrong. So if you take him, don't read the book. Only use his notes to study because remember, he only knows the right answer!
Good professor. Knows a lot about PR. Likes to joke around a lot and tells a lot of cheesy jokes. Great source of information though. Can learn a lot from this professor.
I have had him for three classes now, and he is awesome. He is very clear with what he wants, and connects everything what you do with the real world. Expect to have a portfolio piece when you leave his class. I ended up getting an internship from his class!
I really do not like him. I had him this semester and he is SO arrogant. He thinks he is right about EVERYTHING and you are never right. So don't even try to prove yourself right. He will just shoot you down. Plus, he is very unorganized. I had no clue what he wanted to whole semester. I don't know how I got by with the little amount of info I got
I made the mistake of looking up Penning on this site before the semester started. All the negative reviews scared me to death. BUT he is a GREAT prof. CAP220 in general is tough because you cram sooo much info into 1 semester. Study HARD for the midterm and final. Don't be afraid to ask him questions. He WILL help you. He has lots of PR experience
Extremely knowledgable about PR- has a lot of prior experience and will definitely help to answer questions/explain concepts. Course is a little demanding because it crams so much into one semester but it is very helpful and fun! Be prepared to work hard, but he will help you if you need it. Exams are fair and not hard if you study concepts.
Dr. Penning is one of the best professors I have had at GVSU. He is very knowledgeable in PR, journalism, and media. Get to know him and he is a very nice guy. He always responds to my emails and will work with you. I learned SO much in this class. I think some people mistake his confidence for arrogance.
Professor Penning is very knowledgable about PR don't get me wrong but he is the least helpful teacher I have ever had. You talk about what your supposed to do after you're supposed to do it, which in turn causes bad grades. You do learn a lot but after you have already attempted the assignment.
Penning is fantastic. One of the best professors hands down. You will come out of the class a better writer. If you are a bad writer, you will get a bad grade. Put effort in, and get good results out. If you are a bad writer, maybe PR is not the profession for you. This class is a lot of work but VERY rewarding.
Dr. Penning is exceptionally arrogant and condescending. He is too concerned with bragging about his experience and degrees to use them to inspire students. However, he's perfect if you enjoy seeing tweets about giving people bad grades. In short, three weeks into CAP 220 and I was an advertising emphasis with a new advisor. Good luck.
Dr. Penning is the rudest Professor I have ever encountered. He was also my advisor but I requested to have someone else because he is so unbelievably rude, arrogant, and unhelpful. He also tweets about his students, and when he fails someone. He enjoys humiliating students in class too.
Too sarcastic for me! He grades as though everyone in his course is going to be a PR agent tomorrow. Would not retake and would not recommend. He's a bit of a narcissist too. He gives a generous amounts of assignments so enroll prepared to write your but off.
Professor Penning is one of the more challenging professors in the ADPR major. You are definitely getting good information from him. I always come out of his classes knowing more. He can be a little rude at first, but once you get to know him and his teaching style- it's all good. Get ready to read, participate and most of all learn.
He's a good professor. One downside is he would toot his own horn about everything, I think he just liked talking about himself frankly. I don't think humble was in his vocabulary. Besides that, good teaching style, and alright class.
I don't know why Penning gets such a bad rep! He teaches PR like a dad. He expects a lot from you but he's willing to work with you. He is a very fair grader, you get the grade you work for. establish a good routine (Case reviews on weekends, Response papers on Wednesdays was mine) and you'll be fine!
Going into this class, I was very worried about the workload and how it was going to be as an online format. After taking this course, I'm glad that I was able to take Dr. Penning and learn as much as I did. The course is structured well and becomes a routine after the first couple assignments. Loved that he made his own book for the class too!
Tim is an interesting guy. Class is straightforward. You discuss reading in one class. Then the second class you come with your homework finished and discuss it as a class. If you pay attention and try your best it's not difficult. It has truly been one of the most helpful classes I have taken. You may not like his jokes, but just smile and nod.
Penning set this class up in a different way than he had been doing it in previously semesters and I like this new way a lot. You get a ton of feedback and opportunities to edit your work before you turn it in. Not too sure about how I feel about him as a person, some of his jokes are odd. Overall I did learn a lot, though.
Fav PR prof at gv! I learned so much from his class. He grades the case studies fairly but the final case study weighs heavy on your grade so be prepared. He is super knowledgable to use it to your advantage. I have not one thing bad to say about him and will be taking his other classes next semester!!
It is clear that Timothy knows a lot about PR and is very knowledgeable. With that being said, he graded everything based on what he thinks it should look like and it is tough to get used to this after taking many other PR classes. He also picks clear favorites in his class and makes this well known.
CAP325. I don't know why prof penning get's a bad rep. He is a nice guy and grades everything fairly. The first half of the semester there is a lot of reading and I would consider that the hardest part of the class. Participation does matter quite a bit in this class but he won't ever pick on you if you don't want to answer. I enjoyed the class.
Penning is a great professor. He is knowledgeable, his homework and assignments are relevant and understandable, and he teaches well. With that being said, he is definitely arrogant and likes to promote his own works often, which is annoying. He also is vocal about his political stances online, which I personally have an issue with.
Just a warning to fellow LGBTQ+ students- this Professor is openly homophobic and anti LGBTQ+. He put out an article that clearly expresses this.
His classes are easy enough. However, I find him to be very arrogant and annoying. His classes are repetitive and, quite frankly, lazy. He has you get HIS book, which to me seems like a side hustle because nearly all the information you read in there you can find in one Google search, yet he references it like the Bible. Overall, he's OK, though.
Has very specific standards but once you figure them out, the class is a breeze and is super insightful.
He makes us get his own book that he wrote and goes paragraph by paragraph rating if your work was 'unsatisfactory' or 'satisfactory'. If you miss a couple concepts on a 5 page assignment he will give you an F. I spent hours on assignments just for him to give me less than a B. Extremely strict grader and it's impossible to figure out his grading.
Prof Penning is a pretty easy going person, he is not a harsh grader but I tends to use a lot of PR jargon that can be difficult to understand for non AD/PR students. The class structure is super nice, one lecture and one lab day. Not much homework at all.
where do I start? he has favorites; he grades these individuals differently. he uses aggressive tones with these students in front of others, putting them in an uncomfy situation. I think he loves his wife but that is his only redeeming quality.
