Awesome teacher and super nice guy...The most interested in helping students I've ever seen. The first day's accent in a fake btw
Super hard grader and extremely picky. He always finds something that is wrong with your answers and makes you feel really small. Terrible professor!
Very hilarious and offbeat. Takes time to explain everything, and is very open for questions during lecture. Allows time once a week for homework questions, but he does not check the problems. Enough grades to be fair. Can be confusing, but then is always available for help.

Big class
He will entertain you and he explains things VERY WELL. He replies to emails too, even if it's just one hw problem you don't understand. BIG CLASS, yes but who doesn't need calculus?
He makes calculus as interesting as it could possibly be. He has a good sense of humor and does a good job responding to e-mails and offering help. He assigns WebAssigns every other night, and those can get really tedious.
I had him for Math214. His calc classes always took priority to us. He rarely shows up to class on time and always has a bad excuse for why he is late. He gets mad if we dont stay later for him when he is late. Routinely 15 minutes late. Showed up 10 minutes late to exams- nobody finished. Gets smart with the class for his errors. Avoid.
He didn't seem to care about our class at all. The exams were carbon copies from last semester and he was frequently late. His jokes are rarely funny, and he never really answers your questions. He's not exactly difficult, but that's not saying you'll learn anything.
I took calculus last year in high school, went to lecture twice, and walked away with an A. but i knew a lot of kids who had him and it didnt look like he explained things well. point is- if you took calculus already, this is the easiest teacher, but if you actually never took calculus before, dont expect to learn anything.
i thought he was a good teacher, cept webassign but it was practice but that final was ****ing hard..no fair. dropped my grade one letter
Pilachowski was probably the best math teaacher I've ever had. He was always available outside of class and if you attend every lecture and discussion and do all your WebAssign homework you'll get an A on every test and quiz. Also, the textbook we used in class was very good. I got an A.
Really hard to pass. Almost evryone had difficulty passing last semester. Class average for the first exam was in the 50s
He is pretty demeaning to the students, but funny other times. Not the most fun or easy class, but I think he's probably one of the better professors to have.
Yea, probably one of the best math teachers I've ever had. He is not hard to pass, all his tests are online, practice those and the homework and you'll pass fine. I went from a D on the first test to an A, but the common final was killer.
I took calculus in high school, and I found the class very easy and very entertaining. I thought he was one of the best teachers I've ever had, and he really knew what he was talking about. Show up to class and you'll do fine.
If you have taken calc before, this is an easy A. If you have not, Pilachowski is a great teacher and he is pretty funny. He explains everything really well and takes the time to answer questions in lecture. Highly recommended.
Very good teacher. I would take his class again.
great professor...explains material very well. do the webassign hmwk he asignns ..it is very helpful
Grades very critical. No partial credit given. Talks down to students as we are children.
OMG! Pilachowski is hilariuos!! and he is a wonderful math teacher. he teaches in a way that grabs your attention. seriuosly, if you gonna take a math course, he's the one to take it with!!!..highlyy recomended
I had Pilachowski for math 220 and math 221. He was funny and good at keeping people's attention. Math 221 (calc 2) is much easier than calc 1. Web assign is great at forcing you to do the homework and really helps to prepare you for the tests. However, Tim's tests tend to be very inconsistent. Also, he can be kinda moody.
if you already kno the material (ex: have alrady taken calc in HS but still need it here) he is manageable. If you have a question he will take it upon himself to make u look and feel like a jackass in front of 200 other people no matter what the question. He once told a student that we dont have to simplify when its hard and he should know that
very good teacher. he is very very funny, and knows how to explain the material. he is great !!!!
(Math141). Pil. is a reasonable man and willing to help outside of class. I found the TA, Andy Sanders, to be a much better teacher;(he taught the theory well). 2 Webassign/week, 4 tests, 2 quizzes in discussion/week. Partial notes online. Pil. spent too much time on basics & rushed thru more complex concepts. Usu. late & makes confusing mistakes.
Horrible teacher! Unavailable outside of class. Unable to reach him. His exams are REALLY hard. Webassigns are a pain to do. TA's don't speak english so it is even harder to understand them. Pilachowski thinks he is funny but he is just a boring old man.
i found this class easy bc i took calc 1 in hs. i studied by trying to do past exams, it was the best way to study. webassign not that hard, you can always ask friends for help. if you are new to calc, don't expect to do well w/o going to class.
Tim is a very funny guy, and if he werent so funny, many ppl would not show up. He is very repetitive, but i got most of my help from the TA's. he doesnt seem to have convienent office hours. he makes calculus somewhat enjoyable
If you've taken calc before its an ok class, If you haven't it can become very difficult. Make sure you have a decent TA from the very begenning and if not then switch sections. A good TA can make a huge difference. I've found his lectures to be straight forward but then the webassigns are hard and he takes of alot off points on exams.
Overall the class is very easy. He is very striaght forward during class and does many example probelms for you to understand the concept. Discussion class is manditory becuase you take a quiz. The test are very easy and they take minimal points off for mistakes! I recommened this teacher!!
I'm not a math person at all and was dreading calc but Pilachowski made it extremely easy for me. You just need to actually go to class/discussion and do the hw. Definitely study previous tests and you're golden. Usually late which is a annoying. Highly recommend him-especially since my friends with other teachers are having a really tough time.
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL TEACHER! WORST TEACHER! you can never ask a question or he gets so mad, making you feel so dumb, his office hours are horrible, it takes him about 10 days to respond to your emails, and then you show up at the time you agree with him on time and he shows up 20 mins late, does not explain things well, or for the fact more than once
He's really funny, very helpful, and makes calc fun to learn. I have an A in that class and I don't even like math. He never gave me trouble when I asked him questions and was really nice. He's hilarious too and even passed out candy during Halloween. His lectures are VERY EASY to follow and you should do fine if you study and do your homework.
I don't know about all the negativity, I had a great experience in his class. If you go to class, take notes, and do practice exams, you're guaranteed an A. He's REALLY hilarious and made class FUN. I highly recommend him, especially for people who don't like math. I rarely got stuck on problems either since lectures and notes were crystal clear.
is borderline OCD, which is good for his organization, he is very organized and has everything together, but can be bad for his grading. He also isnt the best at answering questions, often gets mad, made some students feel stupid. is often late
he can be boring at times, but he's really good at explaining the material. puts his lecture notes up online. if math isn't your subject, the webassign could be a pain. his tests and quizzes aren't bad. overall good professor.
Not the most exciting teacher, but he was entertaining at times. Teaches through powerpoints, which can be boring, but they get the job done. Exams are pretty easy - just do the practice exams posted online. The average for our 3rd exam was a 95!
He is the best teacher I have ever had at college. His lectures are interactive, organized, and clear. He points out the common mistakes people make. His tests are fair and predictable. He's also funny and keeps your attention. Great teacher! Take him over another math teacher.
The easiest math class I have ever had. He teaches with powerpoints, and it is extremely helpful to print them before coming to class. Go to class and discussion, and do the homework and you will be fine. Just pay attention. He does a bunch of examples and he is easy to follow. I got a 94 on first test and a 103 (yay bonus points) on second.
ALWAYS late! He shows up late and then doesn't get through everything. Holds review sessions, and then gets mad when you ask questions.
Pretty good teacher, but I absolutely hated how he taught with powerpoint slides. I prefer the traditional chalk and blackboard when it comes to math. Not bad though.
Good Teacher, goofy if you get used to it you could have a good time. No point of coming early to class, he goes through his sillabus every day, but careful if you need extra credit points, some of his pop quiz are in the first 10min of class. Make sure to check prior test and understand the homework. Good professor over all.
he's cool
good guy go in for help if you need it
Great teacher, he makes his own lecture notes so all you have to do is follow his powerpoints. He's also really funny so you stay interested.
Talks down to the students
Challenging quizzes bring down everyone's grades. Exams aren't awful but require intense studying. Not the worst teacher but I'd look elsewhere if possible.
The guy is certainly weird! His pop quizzes are consistently the hardest but with studying, the exams are average. HW will pad your grade too.
His class is not hard you just have to go to lecture. Also the homework assignments are harder then the exams pretty good class
He knows the material and is a good teacher but moves WAY too fast through the material, deferring many questions to office hours and tutoring. I get that there's a lot to do but he should at least be a little more willing to answer questions and slow down so everyone isn't scrambling to keep up and learn everything effectively.
He's not a fantastic teacher, but the class is not very hard. I had never taken calc before and I managed to get an A- without excessive effort. Overall, my advice would be to take him. He's a safe bet, compared to what you might get with other math profs, but you'll have to learn a lot of the material on your own.
I believe it's more of your TA who makes or breaks the class. He is funny in the way that he's a quirky. He must bring up how much work he has teaching 4 other classes everyday, which gets annoying. His exams are medium, not too easy but nothing there to trick you. Print out his lecture notes and go to discussion and do your hw and you'll be fine.
He uses too many power points and doesn't really explain well until you ask. He makes some mistakes when teaching. He tries to be hilarious but over does it. His class is kinda of easy but his teaching won't give that much insight so textbook study is important. All in all there where better teachers depends on how you like to learn.
All he does is read his power points. TA is much more helpful as she actually teaches and and works through problems rather than saying that we should already know the material and if we don't we should just go to tutoring. Piachowski is always 5-10 min late for lectures. Worst professor.
It is true that all he does is read off the powerpoints but you can tell he knows what he is talking about. He doesn't really like to be interrupted with questions during the lecture but the TA did a good job of answering all the questions outside of class. The tests were straightforward and if you studied at all you would do OK!
He teaches through powerpoint and provides guided notes that you can print out, take to class, and follow along with. The web assignments are long and tedious and due before every class. There are graded worksheets in discussion. He uses response ware for lecture quizzes. Tests can be pretty tough, but he's available for office hours.
Easily the laziest math teacher I've ever had. Shows up to class 10 minutes late on a daily basis, as a result he rushes through the lectures and fails to go over important material and example problems. He also refuses to help students during the discussion. I thought that was the point of discussion???
Throughout the whole semester he showed up late to class. Shows how much he cares about his students. Nada. He rushes through powerpoints and talks as if we have been doing the types of problems for a while. If you take him it would be a good idea to learn it ahead of time, so then maybe you can understand him.
He grades on consistency and gives partial credit. He goes over examples step by step in class, rather than skipping steps (except for graphing triple integrals; problematic). In order to do well (B or higher) in exams, you have to study book examples and Justin's past exams. Overall, professor has flaws, but still my fave math teacher at UMD
Probably the least helpful and most arrogant professors I have had. On the first day of class he told us that it was just a rumor that he shows up to class late every day, and since then he has hardly ever been to class on time. Refuses to give straight answers to questions and instead just tells you that you should have paid attention more.
He's great for anyone who's taken AP calc in high school. The class will be a breeze. Everything is nicely reviewed and he keeps it straightforward for the most part on exams. He does go over things pretty fast, so I can see why people who've never taken calc before struggle. Still is manageable if you put effort in the hw and review his old exams.
He reads EVERYTHING of PowerPoints. It's a math class, actually doing the work helps. He has way too much faith in the TAs, who are inconsistent. The TAs have complete power to grade the exams how ever they want, which can cause problems. One TA would give partial credit for a problem while the won't. Overall atmosphere is mediocre.
Professor Tim is pretty cool. However, he moves really fast (since he comes to class late) and barely answers questions. If he does he will totally embarrass you in front of the whole class making you feel even more dumb than before. He also teaches as if everyone had took calculus in high school before and that's even worse.
Had him for this past semester. Flies through the material on PowerPoint as though all of the information is review. Answers no questions because he says he is pressed on time. Not the best professor for a first year Calc class.
He is a decent professor who may not be the best but will definitely recommend taking because curves a lot. I know people who got Cs and Ds in their exams and pulled off a B or C in their final grade. Some flaws but not a tough grader apparently.
Great professor. He makes himself available to his students with plenty of office hours. Make sure to review for the exams using testbank. Group study also helps alot for the exams. Really enjoyed this class even though it was challenging at times. I would definitely recommend this professor. Go Terps!
He teaches via powerpoint point slides which he reads off of. This teaching style does not mesh well with my learning. I would much rather have it written out.
Pilachowski is a decent teacher but often rushes through concepts. It seems that most of the time he is more interesting in putting on a show rather than actually teaching. I did fine because I had already taken calc in high school . I would recommend paying attention in lectures and doing practice problems in the textbook to not get behind.
One of the better Calc 1 professors, very clear and fair grading system. Definitely attend all lectures, there are in class questions for grades sometimes and he goes over information that will be on the tests. Tests are fair, if you put in a decent amount of work you'll do fine.
Professor Pilachowski is funny and tries to make the class interesting. His tests are fair and the class was overall enjoyable.
His lectures are pretty good, especially since he provides outlines so you can just fill in the important information and examples. His homework is average, and you will do much better on it if you practice the suggested homework first. His exams are extremely similar to his previous ones which are available on the UMD math testbank.
Really easy professor. Wish I had PilachowskI for my other math classes. Take him if you get the chance.
I think Dr. Pilachowski is a solid choice for Calculus 1 (MATH141). At first I felt a little overwhelmed not having taken Calc in highschool, but Tim's lectures were easy enough to follow that I understood the material quickly. I would 100% recommend printing out the note sheets for his lectures. Made studying for exams so easy.
Happened to be my faith that I had Tim twice as a Calc Prof. for Math 140 and Math 141. He is a really good professor. He tries his best to tell you what will be on the exams, especially the final since he does not write the final. If need extra assistance go to his office hours: he explains material more, and knows what you may have trouble in.
This class is frustrating. Lectures consist of reading off the powerpoint slides with minimal to no explanation. WebAssign homework tends to be much more complex than examples covered in class. My TA raises his voice when students don't understand his bad explanations. Group work in every single lecture and discussion. Take it with someone else.
The class is easy to do well in, show up to discussion, do the h/w, use test bank. Easy A or B. Tim is an absolute clown. Starts class late every day. Goes way too quick thru examples. Arrogant when asked questions. Has a huge hard on for bike safety. Wastes tons of in class time. Easy in class examples, impossibly hard h/w and group assignments.
Weird guy that sings and is theatrical as he teaches math, does math off of powerpoint slides instead of writing it out, quizzes every week, a ton of homework that takes hours to do, test are difficult so study a lot for them. He was at the best professor offered at the time and overall is eh, but be prepared for a fake Russian accent Day 1.
He's okay, came in talking in a thick german accent the first lecture, then transitioned to normal when the math started, this is representative of the whole class. He's a clown, shows up late and gives dumb excuses. I haven't had any real problems with the class, although, I took Honors Calc in high school and this is a repeat of that basically.
As someone who is taking Calc for the first time, i found his teaching methods very helpful. Discussions are kind of annoying but helpful if you do them properly. He doesn't curve tests and they are kind of difficult but if you study using exams on testbank and the sample exam given in discussion you should do fine. Overall solid professor
He's almost always late to class and wastes a lot of time going over stuff on his intro power point slides. Make sure to use the testbank. For exams he uses the same style questions as the ones on there. His class is very straightforward, but you definitely need to put some work in to do well. He's definitely one of the better calc professors .
Tim would be best described as hard, but fair. His lectures are boring & mediocre at best, and the tests are difficult (but they prepare you well for the final). If you are good at learning independently AND have already taken calc, then I would recommend him - he drops several assignments (not test grades though), & he doesn't assign minus grades.
Late for class and runs through his notes quickly, so you can't really ask questions. But, if you work on your own, do all your homework, and spend a lot of time practicing all the problems, you will do well. Probably, the easiest professor for math. Pop quizzes, and exams are easy if you do many previous exams on test bank.
Gives pop quizzes almost every class but they are online so you can just have someone text you. Lots of homework but beneficial for you in the long run. He doesn't teach the material well in lecture but that's where the homework is helpful. Tests are straightforward but although he doesn't give minuses when grading, he also doesn't really curve.
I've only had this professor for less than 2 weeks, and I'm grateful I already had my 140 credit from AP's. HE TALKS TOO FAST, you can't understand anything he says and I learned to avoid to have him as a professor if I want to actually understand and PASS math.
Worst professor I have ever taken in my college career. As a math teacher he has not picked up the chalk or a marker the whole semester. He acts like a tape recorder in classes where every lecture is the same form previous semesters. Go thought his powerpoint and not go notes on his site. Does not post powerpoint from class and moves fast.
This man cant teach. He just goes over slides quickly skips over half of his notes, and wont help you for anything. very Rude to his students.... doesn't want them to succeed
Took him for both 140 and 141. Gives all information on a powerpoint with little explanation beyond what is on the powerpoint. You will have to do a lot of teaching yourself because what is done in class will not be helpful for a lot of the online homework. But sometimes he brings in his sugar gliders so I guess its not 100% terrible
This being my first time taking calc, he was absolutely awful for math 140. He taught off of powerpoints, doesn't care about his students, and would never answer questions in class. It was an awful experience.
Tim gives easy examples in the class and harder exams. Quiz makes around 9 % of the grade and they are suprise!
MATH141 at UMD is one of the hardest core classes, and Pilachowski's class is no different. His lectures are just PowerPoints but he makes tough calculus topics easier to understand and is by no means a boring professor. Expect to spend time studying--the exams are challenging but doable if you actually understand the concepts behind them.
Tim's lectures could be okay, except for the fact that he skips through the "little stuff" that you "should be able to figure out yourself." He's often late to class, doesn't respond to student concerns (he is tenured after all), and blames you for the lost time. Tim ruined my math experience for my first year of University.
Tim is a funny guy, but if you aren't very good at math like me, probably not the right choice. He doesn't explain topics thoroughly and doesn't answer questions.
If I never took Calculus in high school I would be very lost. He teaches from a power point, and maybe picked up the chalk ONCE to write where the final was. Does not answer questions, and if he does call on you, he makes you feel very dumb for not knowing the answer. Lots of homework that is a lot harder than the examples in class.
I liked Tim and I learned a lot from him. Has printed lecture outlines which are nice and many tests to practice on the test bank. Tests are on the easier side. Homework is super easy to. However he can be frustrating sometimes because he shows up late, has awful review sessions before tests, and rushes through lectures. Not bad but not that good.
MATH120 with Professor Pilachowski is a pretty good course. Then again, I have taken calculus previously in high school which made the course on the easier side. I know that those who have not taken it previously did slightly struggle. The exams are on the easier side. If you do the homework and prepare in advance you will do perfectly fine!
Timmy has literally taught me nothing. He teaches from powerpoint slides, doesnt fully explain any concepts, and doesnt take questions. You have to show up to lectures because of the random lecture quizzes, but the majority of people just switch on Khan Academy while in lecture. His tests arent too hard, but RIP if youve never taken calc before
He thinks he is very funny but he is very irritating. Class not too difficult and TAs give a lot of partial credit on tests
Covered all course material well and wants his students to be successful.
He's irritating to listen to during lectures and his powerpoints that he reads from are awful. Exams are standard for a college calc class but make sure to keep up with the large amount of online homework. Overall it's pretty easy to get at least a B. Don't bother approaching him if you want help go to your TA.
Pilachowski is an absolute nightmare for someone who has never taken a math class before. He's very irritating and listening to him lecture is like watching paint dry. He teaches directly off powerpoint slides and doesn't go into detail. He doesn't take questions and it's obvious he doesn't care if we pass. Find a better professor.
I went to every lecture and did not do well. Professor Pilachowski did not teach me anything. All the material I learnt was from out of class tutoring. The only good thing about this class is that he posts all the past tests online so if you can take those and do well, you will do well on the actual exam. Good luck
Pilachowski only uses powerpoints to teach and it's not helping at ALL. He covers the material briefly with his useful "jingles". I feel like I learn more from the textbook and homework than from him. Also, thank god my TA was super helpful, otherwise I wouldn't have managed this class as someone who has never taken Calc before.
Tim is a fantastic teacher. He's caring and cares about math. He teaches from powerpoints, so it's vital to do your homework and attend discussion. Be respectful and courteous and he'll bend over backward. Don't, and class won't be enjoyable for you. Definitely come prepared to work for a good grade. If you're looking for a spoonfed class, move on!
Tim is the absolute worst professor I have ever had. He does not teach at ALL, just expects you to know what is going on. He only uses powerpoints and there are daily pop quizzes that have no partial credit. Do not bother going to a review session, he gives you a test and tells you to find the answers with friends. There is a 2% curve at the end.
Funny guy. Really teaches you how to understand calculus and why equations and numbers work the way they do. You have to look past the hate of math and his somewhat disrespectful attitude and you will learn. His TA sessions were the most helpful. His review sessions, barely even worth it.
Honestly, he does not know how to teach well. BUT he did round my B+ to an A+ at the end because I showed major improvement. So if you work for the grade you want, you will earn it. He does quizzes just about every class, so you must go. If you study ALL the practice exams over and over, you will get a B or A on exams.
When he's not yelling at bikers, Tim is about what you'd expect from a math professor. The lectures were informative, but dull. A lot of students studied hard and still ended up with low grades. You'll have to work harder in this class than some other 140 courses. If nothing else, I can at least say I got a solid understanding of calculus.
You have to go to his lectures because he has lecture quizzes, but if it wasn't for that, I wouldnt have come to class. He teaches from powerpoints which is stupid and he doesnt post them. He has a lecture outline which is ok but not always the most helpful. If you havent taken Calc before, I highly suggest not taking his class.
Only take this class if youve taken calc before and can teach yourself how to do math. He spends way too much talk repeating unnecessary information and complains way too much about bikes on the sidewalk
If you have not taken AP Calc before, at least study to prepare for this class or have a hard time. Concepts in this class are not well explained in the first few weeks, so it is best to know some calculus beforehand. The best advice is to practice rigorously and expose yourself to every kind of question related to the unit.
Tim Pilachowski is a solid professor. His lectures are him just reading from his slides and non-mandatory, but useful. Discussions and exams are the only mandatory classes. Exams are very predictable, they're pretty much copies of his previous exams, with different numbers.
Tim is not the best teacher, if you can take any other teacher besides him, do it. His lectures are very dull and the only important thing is the pop up lecture quizzes. Albeit, his class is passable even for a student who has not taken calc before. The exams are hard, you will need to work with friends and go to his office hours!
Pilachowski is an okay professor. He lectures off of Powerpoints which is REALLY boring. Many people skipped class so there were around 8/40ish people in lecture. The material isn't too bad (especially if you've taken STAT401 and STAT400 already), and the coding is pretty straight forward. There are online assignments, textbook HW, and exams.
He is the absolute worst. Only good thing he does is putting up his lecture notes online. He is more concerned about bicycles and scooters on sidewalks than he is about teaching the course.
This class is BRUTAL and even the TAs felt bad for us. He lectures super fast and just reads. We aren't fully taught the material, and for stuff we dont get to he tells us to go home and look over it. The grading exams is unfair and the lectures do not cover everything tested.
Really tough professor. If you're willing to put in the work, you'll pass.
So many weird policies and he is not helpful at all.
Professor Pilachowskis lectures are very good; even though you miss his lecture, there are video outlines available. He goes out a lot of homework, as always; he really only reads the slides in his lectures. But still, he is very rude, disrespectful and impatient towards students who ask him questions. He starts yelling at you.
His workload and the class structure were very straightforward and easy to keep track of which was very beneficial during online learning. His lectures are bland but so are all math lectures IMO. He could sometimes be rude during lectures, but he has a sugar glider which makes up for it.
Awful teacher, all he does is read what his PowerPoint says, he does not take questions or perform examples on the board during class. Class is focused with 70% of your grade being exams. He puts trick questions not shown on the review, to add them to the exam so he sets you up to fail. He has around a 27% fail/drop rate to show for his teaching
If you're the type of person who needs problems to be written out during class (like most students), AVOID TIM. He survives on PowerPoint and doesn't write anything out (which is really weird for a hard math class). His note outlines are complex and wordy with very little helpful material. Also the textbook sucks so if ur confused ur screwed
If you've never taken calc before or if you struggle with math do NOT get this prof. He just reads off of his lecture slides and doesn't write out the work, and the way he presents problems is confusing. You will spend a lot of time outside of class teaching yourself the material. He also tends to go off-topic and rant about bikers, weird dude.
In person he speaks fast & his lectures are hard to follow but his lecture videos are great. I took calc in hs but if I hadn't his videos would be good to learn from. Exams are difficult but formatted almost exactly like the discussion w/s & he is very generous when giving points on exams. He doesn't curve & you have to do well on exams to pass
He is terrible at teaching. His tests are hard. I went to math tutoring and I told them I had him and they laughed and said good luck. Most of the people I used to go to tutoring with dropped out of his class. The class was full on the first day and now it is almost empty.
Boring Lectures, and just reads of slides. Take any math teacher with better ratings over him. He isn't a bad teacher, just isn't a good one. He is okay
tim is an okay teacher. his lectures are just him reading off of his old slides without doing any work which can be confusing. i do appreciate how you can choose if u go to class or not, but watching the lectures is necessary if you want to pass. i have an A in all my classes bc i am a generally good student but this wasn't it. only take if needed.
Attending Pilachowski's lectures is essentially sitting in class as he reads off of his powerpoints with lecture notes and a few examples. He's a solid teacher, but if this teaching method doesn't work for you, maybe try another professor. The exams are a little bit on the hard side, and you will be learning the most by doing your hw and discussion
All that matters here is your 4 exams + the final. His exams aren't terribly hard, but getting a 65/70 is pretty normal. Hated him in the beginning, but came to like him. Graded group discussion worksheets and 2 hw assignments weekly. Spends 10 minutes of class every day going over the syllabus. Gives a lot of life advice. Taking him again for M141
Hating him in the beginning but he grew on me. Can be very mean and condescending but at the end of the day he's a pretty good teacher despite the fact that his exams are pretty hard and blindsiding. If you don't have a calculus background don't take his class because he teaches like we all already know what he's talking about.
he gives out a lot of homework and makes you do the homework for future lessons before he teaches them in the lectures.. ??
Known for being a horrible teacher. Whenever an older student hears that I have him, they just laugh and tell me good luck. If you are reading this before signing up for his class, don't ever. If you can change it still, do. I already took calculus once (not at UMD), and his teaching style still made this hard for me.
He basically wants you to know everything before hand and expects you to understand the material after only a few steps. He wastes a lot of time in lectures talking about his personal life and refuses to make up for it. He gives the most basic examples during lecture and then the homework looks nothing like what was taught. Avoid him if you can.
Tim wastes a lot of time during lectures talking about himself and how much he hates VEO scooters. He expects everyone to know everything and makes the homework 10 times harder than what he "teaches" in class. For his review sessions, he tells us to work with someone next to us and doesn't actually show us how to do the problems. Avoid him.
PLEASE do not take Tim. He does not lecture, he just reads off of slides, and if you are anything like me, you learn math better when math is actually performed during the lecture instead of an audiobook of the textbook. He is also not logical at all when it comes to grading matters and excused absences.
DO NOT CHOOSE TIM AS A PROFESSOR. YOU WILL FAIL THIS CLASS!! All he does is read from the slides and expects you to understand. Also if you've never taken a Calc class before this you will struggle a lot.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I studied nearly 6 hours daily for his class and still ended up failing. He does NOT teach any content, he significantly lacks understanding when it comes to personal matters. He assigns WAY too much online homework. Like 3-4 assignments per week that took me 1-2 hours each to complete, not including studying. Do. Not. take. Him.
Professor Pilachowski is just fine. Not my first choice to take again, but not worth upending my schedule to avoid. His lectures are easy enough to follow, but don't skip them. Absolutely go to discussion. Decent professor overall.
Pilachowski's lectures can be dry, but his online videos are super helpful. The exams are tricky, so do the practice worksheets and try Unstuck study for study prep. Overall, a solid professor if you're willing to put in the work.
He was one of the worst math teacher I have had. Do not take his class. all he does is read off the slide. also he thinks everyone has taken the same math class and remembers everything from high school. He dosnt explain what his is doing well. Also he give 3 HW a week that take each a hour.
if you don't know calc coming into this course STAY AWAY. lectures are not helpful, exams are difficult, and are often on content not covered in class. The majority of my learning was teaching this material to myself and using the textbook and homework. his TA is also awful and can't explain anything. he also gets mean and yells at students 0/5
If you want to keep your sanity STAY AWAY FROM PILACHOWSKI! I took calc in highschool thinking this class would be an easy A, I was wrong. His exams were extremely difficult and had nothing to do with the homeworks or lectures. Be ready for lots of word problems. If you were like me and had/has to endure this pain I wish you great luck.
It was quite difficult to sit through his lectures, which is why I appreciated the fact that in person attendance was not mandatory so long as you watch his online videos. Reads off the slides and is quite passive-agressive. If you have a background in Calc already, you'll be fine, otherwise, steer clear.
He wasn't that bad. I failed because of my own problems. He def wasn't the best lecturer but the TA I had was really good. Pilachowski was ok, he talked a lot about road laws for some reason. A lot of people don't like him tho.
Didn't go to lectures and still passed. Just because I had to teach myself everything since I failed the first two exams when I tried GOING to all of his lectures. he's horrible at lecturing and just goes based on his own slides. I only passed because I had to teach myself EVERYTHING. And who tells his students to spend 5 hours on homework??
In my entire life of education at any given institution I have never had a MATH teacher or professor use a powerpoint to “teach”. Whether you go to the lectures or just use the online lectures, all he does is talk through a powerpoint. In the discussion sections the TA's are also told to not help us. This class feels like a trap, avoid at all costs
If I could rate him a 0, I would. He doesn't teach the material and often goes on unrelated rants. He's rude and yells frequently, even during tests, making it hard to focus. He gets mad when students ask questions, which makes it harder to learn. This is a required course, and he's the one making it far more difficult than it needs to be.
I'm horrified, my 1st exam: 1. Never put up a timer, which he promised 2. Raised his voice, "You're not in kindergarten anymore." 3. W/h 3 min left, he raised his voice again to clean up 4. Said "he doesn't understand why we don't listen." The room was quiet & everyone was listening The average was 50.3% for an ELEMENTARY Calc Exam.
A bad person and worse professor. Tim rarely went into great detail in lectures, expecting text to be the main resource to consult. In exams Tim was without hyperbole, abusive. Yelling at students, just being needlessly rude. For a mandatory course, Tim made it unbearable. I withdrew as I don't intend to receive a poor grade from a poor professor.
WORST CALC TEACHER EVER! How is he still employed? He's rude, he doesn't know how to teach, and isn't understanding of people's situations at all. IF YOU WANNA GET AN A, IT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE WITH HIS CLASS. good luck.
