very interesting course material, but tests are hard, lots of reading
Tim is great, lots of notes, beer after writing exams, a very interesting class
military in his teaching; his way or the highway-VERY creative group activities
Very monotone lectures, very hard. Take another class and read that stuff home.
Really liked his teaching, tests were right from the notes. High expectations.
Intersting material and note alot of things to memorize. Videos!
Make sure you take good notes! Nothing on the tests will surprise you if you do so.
Tim's a good teacher who lacks enthusiasm. Maybe he's consumed with his other obligations. Great course content, and good in class discussions. Hard tests and a wide variety of essay topics.
Good lecturer, decent guy. Take good notes in lectures and films and you should do fine.
Tim gets all or most of his information from a single source, Bishop John Shelby Spong, whose ideas are off the deep end. Tim is intolerant and discriminatory against most who do not share his views and seems to grade students based on this.
If you are not a good note taker, do not take this class. A lot of group discussions. Tests are fairly straight forward. Don't doze off during videos, it will be an essay question on tests.
have good note taking skills. prepare yourself for an aching hand.
Don't sit beside students who talk because you will be busy writing down notes as few notes are on the board. Final covers entire course. Enjoyed the videos in class.
Awesome teacher-enjoyed every moment
Avoid this man, if you can help it. Especially avoid his three hour classes...you will want to shoot yourself from boredom! Don't snooze tho. Take extensive notes. The tests are half lecture notes and half essay (video/textbook q's)
Tim is an excellent teacher. He is a very interesting and inspiring person. The class is challenging, but he makes it very interesting and if you pay attention you will definitely learn a lot. It was my favorite class yet.
The content is fascinating, but Tim doesn't like discussion so you're on your own ex 2 short unmoderated group disc. Tests are almost 100% memory, so take notes and memorize them - questions like "Who did what when and where to whom when it was raini
Very intelligent teacher, 3 hr class is long but do-able. Notes, notes, notes! As long and you can read and write your okay- exams are easy and straightforward. Very nice man, enjoyable class. And pay attention to the videos, ALWAYS exam essay question
Evil...
You will burn. If you do take him,the only way to get a good grade is to adopt his opinion.
This man has knowledge out the yin-yang,is very serious, but displays subtle humour here and there. Your hand will cramp from note taking. Make sure you don't miss a beat, cause if you do, you will pay for it at exam time. He's tough, but worth it!
This is NOT a class for beginners-beware the title is misleading. Tim will expect that you have prior knowledge on western religions. Avoid the evening class at all costs. If you have to take it, make sure you write down everything.
horrible, horrible, horrible. want to take a class where you cannot get a good grade unless you have an opinion that matches the professors? take this class then. tim was knowlegable, but didn't realize he was teaching a 100 level course.
Tim is a really nice, interesting guy but a very hard marker!!! I learned alot but got a c- so don't expect an easy ride in this class!!!!
Great guy, advocate for students, and political. Study your ass off. It is no easy ride.
Hands down, this is my alltime favourite course. Not easy, but what do you expect, it is the religious history of western civ. Tim does lecture more than discuss but he is not simply looking for rote memorization - he wants to see your wheels turning.
If you are a religious person, don't take his class..cuz he will be sooo disrespectful... he has an awful way of explaining religions
do not take his class.. warning, it will confuse you like crazy especially if your religious you'll be disrespected. exams are crazy. if you take this course good luck, know all the dates and everybody's name, sons, daughters...everybody's.
Listen... This guy knows about as much as a semi-educated gay man... oops. He is paced, and clear most times but if your timid, you'll never want to stop his lecture and may take a blow to your ego if you do. "why was the arc portable?".. i said because it had handles... dont know if I got it right.
i took this class because i respect him politically and i was interested in what his perspective would be (as a openly gay ordained priest)...teaching is obviously not his first love. this course is NOT easy...the hardest midterms ever. i like him, but i would not take another course with him.
stevenson was very interesting, but at times very disrespectful. its a fifty-fifty with him--either you love him, and therefore do pretty good, or you think he is extremely disrespectful, and therefore probably not do so well at his essay questions. Know every detail you can possibly think of.
This class really opened my eyes.A lot of note taking and exams are tough, but if you take the notes, the answers are all in there. He really exposes all sides of the religions and makes you think critically and scholarly about them, NOT FROM A RELIGIOUS STANDPOINT!Very interesting and inspiring man.
Well, he is a nice person but his lectures are very fast paced and he is difficult to follow. He lacks organization and his speech is very monotone. If you like religion, just read some books from the library! This is my best advice.
He is a nice guy however, he is disrespectful to God and u will get hurt if u r religious. His marker marks very hard. the midterm was hard but the final was pretty good. Pay extra attention to ur grammar when u are doing your essay. Do diagree with him cuz he gonna give u a low mark
Tim is an amazing person and a wonderful instructor, and people who have issues with him being "disrespetful" to God obviously missed the whole point of the course. It's supposed to open your mind. If you want to be told how great your God is, go to church.
Having a great time in this course. I find that Tim is only impatient with people who do not challenge themselves to think outside of their ingrained beliefs. He's an odd combination of old-school "Sir" and warm and gentle minister. Raises the bar just as soon as you clear it.
Took this course hoping to be challenged. Tim is a very interesting man but a bad teacher. Straight lectures, no discussion, barely listens to questions let alone answer them, and gives a limited or misleading idea of what he expects from you as far as essays. Exams are easy, know the lecture notes.
I dunno what's up with all the people pissed off that this class wasn't a three-month long prayer meeting for christians - it's an academic class!! it's interesting, informative, & it definitely challenges you. it's tough - hard to figure out what tim wants, & you better know your stuff for exams. memorize EVERYTHING for tests. you'll learn a lot!!

best class of the semester. great teacher. don't expect to be able to stick to your biblical beliefs in class, be prepared to have some expectation of critical thought placed on you. really tough class, take lots of notes, do all the readings. learn a lot.

Was a very interesting class.Very good teacher, Simplistic lectures that cover a lot of information. If you are religious, could get offended by taking this class; he has unique views regarding Christianity. Fair but tough marker, a rewarding class if you work hard
Honestly, if you want to know about Christianity and the Bible find a good Church that you can attend. 7th Day Adventist' teaches Bible truths.I wouldn't recommend this class, it will just pull you away from the truth, that is in the Bible.
This class is obviously going to be to contentious for anyone who has strong to fundamental beliefs. But for the rest of us he fairly approaches the three western religons. I'd warn you that what you get out of his course is what you put in - so keep up with the readings.
Tim works one day a week at the school. He's a city council member as his day job and sadly it shows. The class content is fascinating and the notes he does have are good. His classes however consist of us sitting for 3 hours and taking notes while he talks. He's very hard to get ahold of, his instructions are unclear and his marking is unfair.
His lectures are completely facinating. Yes, it is 3 hours of taking notes and no, he is *not* an easy marker but I got a lot of solid information. Recommended but make sureyou keep up and don't miss class as his exams are essay based, primarily on the lecture material.
As someone else said, if you are deeply religious, this class is not for you. He is quite biased and his lectures may push buttons, but if you don't know much about the topic, then it is interesting and informative. Tim's voice does drone on, but if you take notes on everything he says, you'll do well in the class.

I found him to be very UNbiased and interesting. He knows what he is teaching extremely well, brings up valid and interesting points of discussion, and grades you based on your understanding of the material. You do as well as you attempt to, and he's more apt to grade you well for really thinking before you speak or write anything down.
Fascinating class and great lectures. Just remember that it's a touchy subject for most people and realize he's got his own perspective and it might not match your own. Super hard exams, but a class worth taking as many great subjects were touched on that involve everyone!
Tim Stevenson is hard to get along with,he appears to have a chip on his shoulder, due to some issues pertaining to his sexual preference, & appears to be biased in his views of certain religions. At times Tim is arrogant,& unaccepting of different views & perspectives. His tests & assignments are difficult & unfair, too much for an intro course.
Tim is a good teacher, but his tests can be difficult. I found that most of the test material came from his lectures. Aside from the class being a little difficult, he does a good job of stimulating ideas. I would recommend! d
Had Tim in my first year for the Religions of the West class. I don't think I've had a better class during my time at Langara. Learned an insane amount and the assignments and readings are excellent (aside from the bad cosmology text). It is true that Tim may come off arrogant, but he knows his stuff and wants you to evaluate your preconceptions.
Very intimidating making him seem unapproachable (plus he's usually busy with the other job). Heavy workload, long winded lectures. Write fast or get a laptop. Hard to tell what he really wants from you. Totally stressed me out until I dropped. AH. What a disaster.
I learned a lot in this class and I really respect Tim. I am also kind of scared of him. He is a brilliant man and demands a lot of his students. Be prepared to work hard and also to learn plenty.
Tim is disrespectful and does not listen to other opinions. He has his own thoughts and believes them to be right. What can one expect from a politician? Writing so many essays as if that was our only class and expects to know everything he says.
Poor teaching, obviously know's what he is talking about but doesn't convey it well, doesn't answer questions, more interested in talking about himself and his own beliefs than the material
Knows his subject matter well and is very interesting in his presentation. Although he doesn't tolerate dumb questions, he is open to intelligent queries. One of the more enlivening classes I've taken and main textbook was even-balanced. Another book on Cosmology should be considered as the one used is badly written.
Tim Stevenson is a man I respecct deeply after taking his class. Though he conveys the information dryly, if you take notes on what he says in lecture, then the tests should be fine. Fair marker and an extremely intelligent individual. Not a class to ask questions in, so wait until after class instead.
Probably the most compelling class I have ever taken, HOWEVER, Mr. Stevenson makes me regret taking the course. His exams are ridiclously hard, his workload is completely uncalled for and his marking is inconsistant and too strict for a introductory survey course. I would advise you to skip over his class, unless you are passionate about religion.
This class is a LOT of work. There is a fair amount of reading and LOTS of essays- the 2 exams are VERY long- a LONG essay, a short essay, and 6 short answer (like 1 word) but made up of 5 sub ?'s each. you must take VERY detailed notes- sometimes he'll lecture 3 hours solid. He is a BRILIANT and well travelled man. work hard.
He takes publicity phone calls in lecture. Pay attention and take good notes in his class. Don't worry as much on the content of your papers (tests) as the length! He docks your MAJOR marks (half) if it's too short. The only 5 people who had to REDO their "Opinion" Papers disagreed with the statement provided (and obviously his opinion).
Lots of people do like the class because its 3 straight hours of lecturing. But what he talks about is really interesting. Its not just how a religions works and what people believe, it looks deeper into it. Take really good notes, his tests are very specific. If he mentions it in class, it will be on the test. Also, one essay worth 30%
Tim is probably the best teacher at Langara. I have been there for 4 years. Informative beyond necessity. I still ask him for assistance with assignments. I recommend his classes to anyone. The guy knows his stuff. So what if he answers calls during class, the quality of his teaching is magnificent!!
Good teacher in the fact that he obviously knows the material, knows what he is talking about. But hes a jerk. Has his favourites in class and will accomodate them ONLY in terms of grades and general help. Favourites= those who talk every class(I never spoke up even tho I came to EVERY class).Acts & Thinks he is God. 60% of midterm based on lecture
If you want to do well in this class go to every lecture. If you miss a class you will miss lots of important stuff. We had to do one major paper and two mini essays. The midterm and final are long, with long essay questions and short answer questions. Pay attention to videos.
I loved this class. It was very interesting and I learned a lot. The workload is heavy; lots of reading. Two small papers and one big research essay. Mr. Stevenson was not nearly as bad as some of the comments I've read here. Sure, he's not warm and fuzzy...I highly recommend ths class if the topic interests you.
Very informative and interesting. Lots of note taking which if you're good at, will make the midterm and final easy. Don't miss a class or leave during the videos. Mr. Stevenson always promptly replied to my emails and was helpful with any questions I had. Highly recommend this class if the subject interests you.
He was a pretty good prof for the class. However, when I read all the comments on here, I thought I was totally gonna fail the course just because of all the mean comments. I found he had a pretty good sense of humour as well as his class was very informative. I would recommend his class for anyone willing to put in some effort to learn.
If you are looking for a class to affirm your faith, don't take this one. If you are looking to take a religious studies course, and get and unbiased, educated, and broad base knowledge, take it! I think Tim was incredibly intelligent if not slightly depreciating prof, but only take this class if you are prepared to participate, and be challenged
this course feels like it was written in 1980 and has had very little added since. also contradicts text and marks inconsistently.needs to hit the books himself as there are major gaps in material.
I had no expectations when I took the class, but Tim blew me away. He gave out his cell phone number in case we needed to talk to him about anything. VERY note-heavy, but if you're paying attention then you're set for the exams. I wouldn't recommend missing any classes because you'll miss a lot of material. One of the best teacher's I've had.
i personally think he is an awesome and very understanding teacher. you just have to put effort in the class, take notes and show up to all classes. dont take this class if u have strong religious believes and are not willing to be open minded
Pious, bias, AWFUL. He his not objective whatsoever and bases all his lectures on his OPINION of things, not necessarily what is factual. Not to mention that he's rude and rather intimidating..
Leave your religion at the door when coming into this class. Tim is terrifying as a teacher but he definitely made me think. You have to attend lectures or else you'll be totally clueless, and KNOW THE DETAILS! His short answer questions are really specific about history (who, what, when, where) so study those like mad.
Definitely not easy, but not difficult either if you attend every lecture and take good notes. Workload is moderate. Difficult to be completely objective in this subject, as anyone taking the course will find, but Mr. Stevenson speaks well from his perspective. Those with strong religious belief may be challenged, but I'd strongly recommend it
Being a pastor you'd think he'd be biased, but, he's completely objective. The material is interesting and he is a skilled lecturer. There are three essays, one Mid-Term, and a final. Best part of his class is that he will lightly ridicule students that say or do idiotic things.
I personally think he should keep his personal thoughts to himself because it sometimes make a few people feel uneasy. Some of his facts should be straightened out(and his spelling sometimes.) Lastly, he should be open to questions and discussion since it is hard to voice out your questions and comments while he is doing his lecture.
He definitely adds his subjective, biased opinion much of the time while presenting "facts" which are not supported by any evidence. The class is taught based on HIS interpretations of the scriptures, as though he has a personal agenda that he is trying to push. Also be prepared for ad hominem attacks coming from him as well.
He says that slaves built the pyramids which they did not. This is one of many errors. Anthropology plays no part in his work. It seems that his goal is to push "Cosmology" and site outdated history books.
Very note-heavy lectures, and the exams are detailed. If you come to class, take good notes, and memorize them you'll do fine on the short answer questions. The lectures themselves are extremely boring and dry. He just talks the entire class with no discussion. Sometimes we don't even get a break during the 3 hour lecture. Avoid him if you can.
I liked him overall. The class was interesting and he delivered the information in a captivating way. There is little to no discussion, which I think is actually a good thing, but rather he will have a solid, clear, and organized lecture and you'll just need to consume the information like a sponge for the tests. Easy marker and good lecturer.
This teacher and course were very interesting. I am glad I took it for it gave me a good insight on my own religion and the two main other monotheistic ones. His classes have a lot of good material and he is easy to approach. What I most liked is we could choose our term paper subject and we had a time near the end to share a work to each others
Tim Stevenson is a great professor... WHY? Because no matter what you FEEL about him he makes you think and look at the world in a way you probably wouldn't have if you didn't take his class. A good teacher doesn't give you a pat on the back; he puts it on YOU to have an experience and learn something. Or not.
Really interesting person, who in terms of his own beliefs seems to contradict himself quite a bit. His lectures are very one way with not much room for disagreement. He often spells key terms wrong when writing on the board, and his tests demand really specific answers, but he makes the course interesting. Very much enjoyed
Tim is an interesting guy, & his lectures are pretty entertaining - albeit long. He is a tough grader, and can be a bit unapproachable and dismissive if you want to come to him with any concerns. Be sure to study hard for the exams, especially specifics (like dates). A lot of what's on the exams comes out of the lectures, so take good notes!
Tim is highly educated and has high expectations from students. This class is not one you can skip or get away with without studying. You have to work hard for a good grade in this class. Unless you're very interested in religion, you will not really enjoy the workload. Make sure to take very thorough notes during class.
names dates and places ! his lectures are amazing record them as well as write them down .
great professor, very caring and sweet
He was my favorite teacher. You really need to listen carefully and take notes but all effort definitely worth it. He is very friendly, care and good person.
