Hardly ever helpful. Very unclear. Gave news assignments to production track students. Go for anybody else.
Horrible professor. Doesn't use his own work. Not helpful. He is critical and it is not constructive criticism. He hasn't been a news room since 1988 and doesn't understand that setting up lights is a thing you just don't do in a time pressed news world when a photographer does several different things a day. He really needs to go. Avoid him!
Overly critical. Too news focused for production options. Uses only news pieces for examples. Almost all projects were news stories. Can be helpful on one on one.
Yet another awful five week class fail. The journalism department needs to get rid of them. The professor told us plenty of pretty things but we never got real hands on experience before we were given our assignments which had to be good or, whoops you fail. Because you only get five in the whole class. Make sure you take notes during lectures.
I don't know why everyone says he's so bad. As long as you pay attention and ask when you need help it's an easy A! It's not a hard class, it's just a lot of basic information (and I've never picked up a video camera before).
Great Professor. I don't know why people complain! Yes there is work, but if you take notes and pay attention, he literally gives you all the answers to his quizzes. The work is given to you with plenty of time to finish with quality work. It's all about personal incentive. Great professor and great class!
I thought he was a really interesting guy with a bunch of experience in the field and I like his quirky sense of humor. Just a nice guy.
He's hard.
This class is horrible and a lot of work. Tim is super unhelpful. Unclear on what he wants. If he provides examples they're useless. He takes off points like no other. I asked him for help and he didn't help me at all and docked points. His quizzes are hard. You're pretty much on you're own with editing, he won't help. The final is ridiculous.
Expects that you will be a professional with the video camera and the editing software even though it is a MANDATORY INTRODUCTION class for the JOUR department. Harsh grader and is always vague with his requirements. He also tests you over EVERYTHING that he says in class from week to week. It is only a 5 week class, but it was HELL.
One of the hardest News130s classes. He is a good teacher though. He understands that you are not going to be an expert and is a pretty easy grader.
Interesting class over studio production. Tim knows his stuff.
Terrible. It's a shame they can't find another person to teach this. He NEVER emailed back when I had a question and he graded so hard for an entry-level 100 class. At least 75% of the people I know have failed him the first time, myself included.
Mr. Underhill expects you to be an expert in an entry level course. If you ask for help he will certainly give it to you. One day was optional for attendance, but if you came he would help you with the upcoming assignment. Underhill doesn't do powerpoint, so you have to take notes from his motor mouth. If he had more chill, he'd be a 4.0 or higher.
I'm sorry he's the only person to teach this course. He's not helpful. You'll ask him to look at things in class, you'll fix them, and you'll still lose points for something. He doesn't give you examples to follow for assignment until AFTER you've turned it in. Go to him after class as many times as possible. I took this course twice. Bug him
I took this class twice, once online. Tim is NOT helpful. Examples are useless. He docks points on everything. Taking it online was only easier because I didn't have to talk to him. He doesn't help you with editing, and expects you to be an expert from day 1, even though it's a mandatory introductory class.
Mandatory intro level class to video editing, he is awful. It's only a 5 week class, 10 class times. I'm not finished with the class and he has missed 3 classes already, 2 in 1 week. He expects you to be an expert on Premiere Pro and assigned a story without even teaching how to insert audio at all. Vague on what he wants from assignments. NO BOOK.
Tim is very critical and it is not constructive criticism. He does not provide good instruction. This is an entry level class and he is not prepared. He wants recognition like he is a Phd and he is NOT. I paid a lot of money for instruction and did not receive. He is a poor instructor. Sad because this could be a great class!
Tim is an extremely tough grader. Do not expect to get passing grades if you just phone in your projects. He makes you work for it but you end up learning a lot.
I felt this class was pretty difficult grading wise - especially since a lot of the students in the class have no experience with video. Either you understand it quickly or you don't. Take a lot of notes. He speaks very quickly.
He was my first professor of the semester but he made the morning lectures enjoyable. Super sweet and funny. Very helpful. He makes things straight forward. The class is an easy pass. I definitely recommend this class and this professor.
He's not as bad as he might seem. The lectures go by a bit too fast, so you have to be paying as much attention as possible. The assignments aren't unreasonable, though you do have to plan ahead on them. Quizzes are simple, a mix of lecture questions and current events (and there IS extra credit). He's nice if you show you care about the class.
Underhill was just a bad teacher. He is not a nice guy to start with, he doesn't pace the class at all and everything has to be done his way. Grades things hardcore like you should already know what you're doing when this is the very first intro course for video journalism. If there is another teacher take that class Underhill is a TERRIBLE prof.
He is so bad with feedback, my friend and I took this online class together and he copied and pasted a vague response to each of our assignments. The online site he uses for the class is confusing and the assignment instructions either don't make sense (he uses vocabulary not clearly defined) or are entirely clear on what he actually wants.
Dude...I had him for an Intro to Video course that he treated like a 400 level class. He is totally unclear on what he wants, and he literally puts TEN OPTIONS on multiple choice questions. His quizzes were impossible, and he is super rude when people ask questions. Might be the worst prof I've had at Ball State.
Avoid at all costs. He thinks he is amazing, but I haven't met someone who thinks his work is good. he told us to go against AP style, gave horrible feedback and graded so inconsistently. no late work, so one missed assignment and you're done for. It's obvious he is teaching because he wasn't making it in the industry.
His online class has the craziest workload I've ever seen. 2 discussions, 4 replies to others, at least 2 visual examples, tons of readings and a quiz every week. It's awful for a 5-week course. His grading criteria make little sense and he is completely rigid in it. Avoid this prof if possible.
Tim is a nice guy who knows his stuff, however; *he is an EXTREMELY tough grader* (I had two minor mistakes on our most recent project and I got a C+. That means he took off 10% per mistake. WHY.) I am a freshman in a 100 level class, which is why his extremely tough grading is so aggravating. The quizzes are impossible, as well.
This class & professor are the reason why I changed my major. It was awful. It's a 100 level class and he expects everyone to know how to work with Premiere Pro without explaining it AT ALL. He never told us how to insert audio until AFTER the assignment was due and half the class got a 0. Even though I changed my major, this class ruined my GPA.
This was the worst class I have taken at Ball State. Tim is ridiculously unhelpful, vague and just straight up unclear with what he wants. Very difficult grader and will not help you with assignments. Good luck.
He is a VERY tough grader, but he knows a lot about the news business. Be in class on time, or you will be sorry.
I was in Tim's News 133 class twice. The first time, I took the class online. The second time, I had him in class was much better. It's better to be in class to ask the questions you need to ask and take notes on the material since there is NO BOOK. I enjoyed this class the second time around and I will say he knows his stuff!!
Avoid this guy at all costs. I never thought an entry level class could be so difficult. The quizzes are designed very poorly and he throws in random but tough current event questions. If you get stuck with this professor my advice is to take great notes and make sure you edit your videos perfectly. Good luck if you take him youll need it.
Underhill expects you to be a professional videographer in an introductory level class. The quizzes are really hard and all assignments are weighted very heavily so if you mess up one thing you grade tanks.
Does not provide constructive criticism, only negative feedback and grades WAY too harsh for a 100 level class. Quizzes are ok but he explains concepts too quickly and doesn't seem to understand we're not all experts. Not helpful and does not do a good job with explaining assignments. Unfortunately, he's the only one to teach this class.
If you're a perfectionist and want an A, you'll get smacked hard by this class. Don't bother asking him for any constructive criticism before an assignment is due because he's a hypocritical grader (ex: tells you the images are steady, then marks you off for shaky images). Grades WAY too hard for an intro class. Good luck y'all.
Mr. Underhill is the worst professor I have ever had. Mr. Underhill was disrespectful and expected us to submit an assignment without showing us what it looked like. Every class, we watched youtube videos of newscasts which were completely irrelevant. The only reason I took this class was that he is the only one teaching it.
Horrible to be honest. There were so many times where I needed his help but he would not get back to me for days. Irresponsible and I felt as if he did not care for me as a student or a person. Would never take this class again and I would not recommend him to anyone. Please don't take his classes.
The average grade for class is 62, the highest grade in class is 67. We try our best and work really hard, but we still receive the awful grades that even make us failed this class.
Mean and horrible. He has ruined my GPA already. He is a really tough grader and very strict with every shot of your video. Ok, so the mean score for our recent assignment is 46/100. You will never get any encouragement but low grades from him. If you can get 80 or higher grade in his class, you can be a great reporter in CNN of FOX News.
Mean. Ruined my GPA, ruined my life.
I love Mr. Underhill, he's very nice. He's a HARSH grader. For TCOM 324 assignments, he deducts points for each flaw. Some students in my class wound up in the negative points. However, he gives lots of opportunities to make it up. Was very helpful with me when I had a traumatic situation happen (let me re-take tests so I didn't fail).
While Mr. Underhill is very educated and well-rounded with the news industry, I thought as if his quizzes were a little excessive and the questions were often worded very difficult. Lectures moved very fast at times as well, so take effective notes. He can be a very tough grader with assignments, but he typically does give good feedback.
The teacher barely teaches and is a very tough grader. Most people don't know video but he grades like we should all be experts.
Underhill grades really harshly especially in beginning level courses. Hes one of the only ones that teaches this class so youll probably have to take it with him. Keep your assignments simple, dont go above and beyond. Be literal and keep it really easy.
Vague on what he wants in an assignment and overly critical of everything. For feedback expect nothing but him pointing out what you did wrong. And sometimes his comments will be misspelt . Expects you to know everything ever about shooting and editing video. Also, he doesn't go over how to edit.
This is an online media aesthetics class, therefore I never had any face-to-face interaction with the professor. His syllabus was clear, everything was laid out perfectly for the students. He didn't do much, his TA did all the work. Follow directions and you'll pass. From what I've heard, I'd never take him for a physical class, but would online.
He spent a lot of time showing us his expensive equipment for no reason. TOUGH GRADER! I think he forgot that some of us are not TCOM majors and this was our first TCOM class. He scored all of my assignments low for no reason. Has no rubric, just throws down whatever grade he wants. Often pointed out mistakes in front of the whole class. STAY AWAY
The disdain I have for this man, ugh. He is tough grader, almost unreasonable, as if we were professionals. A tip: for the VOSOT assignment, submit a script, don't read it and put it as audio, he will automatically give you a C. I personally never met a person who got an A in his class. My advice: it's only 5 weeks, just take C and get out.
TCOM 299X was all about non-majors making videos with your phone. I think he forgot about the non-major part, because he spared no expense harshly grading us. Most of your feedback will be the things you did wrong and nothing more. Spent a lot of time showing us pointless stuff like all of his expensive equipment that we'd never use in practice.
Professor Underhills online class for 231 was good for me. He had very specific instructions and was fair on grading. Hes also good at responding to emails. Everything we were told to read was in the book and the quizzes related to it
Before taking this 5 week course, I was already relatively familiar with the foundations of audio storytelling , which was a huge advantage to my grade. However, this is a course that may prove too difficult for beginners, given that this is a 100 level course. I'd recommend taking a LinkedIn learning course on audio editing with Adobe or Audacity.
Tim teaches things he doesn't know and then takes other professors' assignments and expects us to be able to complete them. He also is very passive aggressive in his feedback. He will let you know what you did wrong and will not let you explain yourself if there is a reason for that decision in your assignments.
Tim is a good guy but a bad professor. He does not know how many of the programs he is supposed to be teaching works. He had never touched illustrator before teaching the class that had a whole section teaching this program. if you have 2 unexcused absences, you lose a whole letter grade.
Tim has genuine skill and talent in the media field, but he is not a great teacher of it. He shows videos to supplement needing to see him actually doing the work that students do not yet know how to do. We relied on each other heavily for help, as students. He can be flexible on due dates, if you ask and explain. Inflexible on grades. Tim is ok.
Professor Underhill is an enjoyable character outside of class, but in terms of him AS my professor? As I already had lots of experience in TCOM, and this was an intro course NOT INTENDED for TCOM majors, this class was way out of proportion with how far it tries to go with itself. Only reason I got as high a grade is he forgot to put in a 0
Tim is horrible. Very tough grader. Gives no good feedback. Ruined my GPA and my life. Thanks Tim.
Underhill uses videos/audios VERY often, and he never actually teaches directly. He expects non-majors to be just as proficient as TCOM majors, making it very difficult to obtain a good grade. My section was at 9:00 am MWF and he often had us come in, played a clip of something, then had us leave without any real instruction after only 20 min.
Terrible professor. He taught and treated my 100 level class as if it was a 400 level class. He expected us to be expert videographers and to keep up on local Muncie news. Who cares about Muncie news? We're isolated on a college campus. I've never heard one good thing about him, and I wish I would've known before I took his class.
He is kind of all over the place when he talks, but you get the general idea of what he's saying. He does a good job introducing students into the field of hands-on media. Not really a hard grader, but you actually have to do the work in order to get a good grade.
I have never had a worse teacher. He is the most petty man I have ever met and refuses to admit when he is wrong. I will tell everyone I know not to take his classes, because he ruined my semester. I was not able to make it to class cause I was EXTREMELLY ILL WITH COVID, and he dropped my grade for it. Perfect, I'll show up if I get COVID again...
Cares more about himself than his students education. He entered a test question wrong, and when I brought it to his attention, he doubled down. He literally said reporters don't have to be unbiased. He would rather be right than make sure his students understand the importance of unbiased reporting. Not okay
Great professor! As long as you listen during class, you'll be set. He explains everything thoroughly and is great at communicating. I missed an assignment due to technical issues and he emailed me fast with helpful solutions. He is a nice guy. Attendance is taken every class but it's an 8 week course so not bad. I would recommend him 100%.
If you're taking this course be prepared to only watch YouTube videos every class from the 80s. He gives very harsh feedback and is really mean. There's a project due weekly for the first half of the class. He's the worst and I've had him before, but couldn't get out of having him again because he's the only professor that teaches this course.
Tim is terrible at giving feedback. He belittles the students and discourages the students from doing anything remotely creative because he's so obsessed with things being done a certain way. That 'certain way' is just his personal preference but he acts like it's the industry standard. I highly recommend you never take him.
I'm basing this entirely off of how Prof. Underhill is in class. He is one of the most frustrating professors I have ever had due to the fact that everything must be "his way" and there is rarely room for creativity. I have heard less than 3 positive comments on projects *all* semester. His "critiques" go far beyond constructive and are just rude.
He is still stuck in the mind of telecommunications in a storytelling class throughout this class he has criticized the work I have done even though he has a lack of knowledge for said programs he is teaching, if possible I would avoid him at all costs; this class would be easy if he knew how to and taught us basics of the programs.
As a non video-production major, this class was the bane of my existence. He expects everybody to be professional videographers from the jump. He answers questions by being dismissive and confusing, and he will say your footage is bad without giving feedback on how to improve. Be prepared to watch 20 yr old videos because that's all he does.
Had him at 8 am and he was a quick lecturer which made it easier to not fall asleep so early in the morning for me, some may not prefer though.
If you're new to media he expects you to know how to use adobe. Class is very lecture heavy and only get 50 min once a week to learn the software. It was just difficult to learn so quickly and he does not do well with responding.
Personally, I didn't love him as a prof. I had a basic understanding of the Adobe products but only being given 50 min class to learn all of After Effects left a bad taste in my mouth.
Only gives students 50 minutes every week to learn a new adobe software and treats it like a refresher, not some people's first time using the software. Very lecture heavy and all the tests, including the final, are online so the class was not hard to do well in. There are better professors who teach this course, I suggest you take them instead.
Not only did I not learn a single thing in this class, but he grades horribly. With less than 10 assignments, he COPY AND PASTED comments for students. Disrespectful. This is a VIDEO CLASS. And his comments were bland and opinionated. His lectures also are only him showing yt videos and talking about himself. Worst teacher I've ever had in media.
Very lecture heavy and we sit there and watch at least 7-8 stories a class. He expects everyone to have experience with video production when some do not. He grades harshly along with the feedback. Nobody got higher than a 78 on a project we did, and the assignment was worth 100 points. He grades by his personal preference and not by the rubric.
He resorted to copying and pasting the same feedback for different students. Disrespectful. His lectures lacked substance, primarily consisting of him showing YouTube videos and talking about himself, rather than focusing on educational content. Disappointing. Sadly, this has been my worst experience with a media teacher to date. Should Retire.
Lecture first half of the class, then second half of the class is the drone flying. As a lecturer, his teaching style is not motivation but it's efficient for amount of material and analytical subject of policies. He is very jolly, and did not get mad after drones being crashed. Everything for the drone exam, and from the drone review material.
One of the first things that he said on the first day was "I wouldn't even give myself a 100." If you want a B in a class that could easily be an A, then Underhill is your guy. He also spends class periods showing us 90s videos that have no educational value and doesn't work with you if you are in a time crunch or need an extension.
Pretty much everything that could go wrong went wrong. Half the lectures were useless filler, the class could have been 2 weeks long and been fine. He is not willing to work with you on any resolutions and will be very difficult about any issues you have even outside your control. Known to frequently fully ignore my emails. Few assignments an harsh
Tim is a great guy but not a great teacher. He only shows old news packages in class and doesn't do much work when it comes to teaching the content. He expects you to know everything and be perfect at everything. He's a harsh grader and I would avoid his classes if possible.
He is very unclear on projects. He grades you badly on the same thing but never teaches you how to fix it or improve. He expects everything to be at expert level when turned in; if not, he will give you a 60% on your assignments.
He's a very nice guy when he isn't a professor, but if you even fall behind for a second, consider yourself done. It's almost impossible to get back up if you miss something in his class. Also the labs are barely helpful, I had to teach myself how to use most of the software. If you can have another professor, I'd recommend going for the other one.
Prof Underhill was by far my least favorite professor. He takes everything too serious. I don't have a passion for animation but he forces it so much in the second half of the semester.
The negative reviews are from students who don't want to try. Most MDIA profs. will give you an A for submitting anything. I went 3 years without improving. Prof.Underhill has STANDARDS. Students wouldn't follow the directions, receive a grade for it, and then complain. I got the most detailed, thorough feedback from my assignments. He cares so much
He grades based on whether or not he likes your project, not whether or not it's actually good. Also grades very harshly and gives not much time in advance for assignments.
You will leave with a vast knowledge of everything news and video!
Tim's got a really high standard when it comes to media production, and often it's almost unreasonably high. Most of what I submitted I considered at least a B was graded as a C. He seems to criticize short films like they're news packages. Lectures can be very boring, especially when he's just crap friends of his have made. Overall, disappointing.
It was a 5-week course. Presentations during the classes, take notes (it will be on a weekly quiz), and 4 assignments with a final. You may need to buy/rent a tripod, mic, etc. Not required to receive pretty decent grades. Canvas is organized. It wasn't hard until the final. He was nice and decently funny, helped move the time. Not bad for 1 credit
His feedback is terrible. It's kinda like he just gets lazy and gives everyone a 70. Good luck getting an A
Sounds like not much has changed in terms of his teaching style over the years. He'll show us slideshows of stuff we already knew from previous classes or just show videos that his friends made with no real academic discourse. It's just not a very engaging class. I like the projects that I've made in his class, but his grades show that he doesn't.
Don't take any of his classes; he reuses his projects. I have taken two different classes with him, and I have yet to do a different project in this new class. Heavy grader and his opinions on what he teaches are wild, and honestly wrong. He tells students to do things that industry professionals would wholeheartedly disagree with.
Grading scale for a 5-week class is incredibly inconsistent, and oftentimes felt wrong.
extremely opinionated, will literally give you a good grade but still critique your work, to the point you yourself will question if you even did it right or not. will sometimes give a certain grade based on if HE likes your aesthetic or not, happens occasionally.
Dude blows. Sorry!
I wouldn't recommend taking tim for any of your classes. He's a tough grader and doesn't care about your success and every rude.
