Doesn't explain anything. Horrible lectures. Bad Jokes. Horrible hair piece.

You dont learn anything in this class, but it doesnt matter. Do an extra credit project and you won't get lower than a C. If your tests are slightly above average, you will get an A if you do an extra credit.

what a waste of space
He doesn't teach anything and then expects you to know everything for the test.
This guy does not help and will refuse to repeat anything said in class!!
You will learn no physics, but if you do the extra credit, you are at least going to get a c
Funny guy but not a good teacher. If you're just trying to get by then take him. He doesnt like to fail people, but if you need to learn the material take another professor.
Datta is the worst professor I've ever had. He does not prepare you for the tests, he doesn't know himself what's going on half of the time and he just generally cannot explain physics to anyone. I am premed and need a 3.6, so taking a C is NOT a good thing for me. DO NOT TAKE DATTA!!
The man is the worst professor I have ever had and I'm a third year college student. I've had some pretty bad ones but that man takes the damn cake. If you have any plans of making a 1.5 or better, don't take his sorry a$$
HE IS OK ,IF YOU DO ALL HIS CAPA-SET HOMEWORK ,THEN YOU WILL DEFINIATLY BE ABLE TO DO GOOD ON TESTS,HIS TESTS ARE FROM HIS HOMEWORK.AND DO EXTRA CREDIT PROJECT...
Absolute waste of breath and fresh air. This guy seems to come to class hung over, and will becon to the wishes of the class so everyone "will like him". One of the biggest pushovers ever, and if you have any sort of care in an A, or the intelligence of a monkey, you can get an A/B+.
He doesn't teach that much, but he will help you during his office hour and in the CAPA lab if you need help. Most of his tests are from the CAPA.
He will walk you through CAPA at his office with any asking. He tries to "make you think yourself", which basically means he'll teach as little as possible. Our first test - he says get out a piece of paper and has 6 people POINT TO ANY QUESTION IN THE BOOK FOR THE TEST - he prepared nothing himself
If you do not like participating in class do not sign up. He is one of those wonderful people that call on you while you are not paying attention. It is possible to do Ok in his class but i did not. I hated the guy. Do not take him. All he does is work problems on the board No real explanation
If you have a technology guy named Ozel DROP the class. Datta is extremely unorganized. Tests come straight from capa. If you want to know grades you make on tests, you have to hunt him down. In my class, at the end, he had to find things to make up for 25% of the syllabus that he didn't do. Avoid!
Datta is actually a pretty cool guy, just an awful professor. As long as you do the capa problems, you should make an "A", or a "B". Although the capa HW requires a lot of time, it is the only way you'll learn anything from the course. Datta can't teach. The TA's assist with capa problems, but make you feel dumb as rocks for asking questions.
Horrible, didn't learn anything...Ozel, the technology guy made up his tests, and did all the work for him, Datta knew nothing, not even test grades. Do Not Take This Class!!!
Every horror story you have heard about this guy is true. The other day he cancelled a review session the day before the test - and when I asked him for help anyway - he said no!! who does that?? Horrible professor, though he does offer some extra credit at the end if you need it.
Make sure you do your CAPA. Took him for a summer class. Students weren't doing too well on the tests, so for the final grade, he negotiated with the students on what comprised it. He was helpful and really wanted the students to learn (lectures were interactive).
AWEFUL PROFESSOR!! He is a horrible teacher so you better learn from CAPA. If you go to hi for help he is not helpful at all! If you can DO NOT take him.
Datta is an okay professor but his teaching style needs improvement. All of your learning will come from cappa; so do them ALL and you should pass. Attend class regularly because the extra credit quizes will help your grade too. There is also a chance to do an extra credit project.
HE is a professor that you cant loss with if you at least try. You have to do the CAPA which prepares you for the tests. When a professor doesn't tell us what to study we complain and when the do tell us I guess some people still have to complain. TAke him he is a good professor.
This is seriously my favorite man ever. I failed every single test, and he still gave me a B+ for the year. He's a bad teacher, but if you do all of the CAPA and the extra credit project at the end of the semester you will be fine. I think I passed because I was 1 of only 4 people that showed up for the exam, and I did the extra credit project.
I never understood a word of what Datta said. He was a total idiot and didn't help at all. I never made higher than a 65 on any of his tests yet i still got a B for the semester. So CAPA is hard and he is impossible to understand, but somehow, no one ever fails.
Data is difficult to understand, but the tests come straight from CAPA. If you do your CAPA and the extra credit project, you shold have no problem getting an A.
He was very unclear. Yes, tests are straight from CAPA but the CAPA problems are almost impossible to do. Class notes are basically notes about formulas instead of problems. He spends about 50 minutes just on one problem. He's the only teacher where I have to go to outside sources to find answers to problems. I learned nothing from him!
Datta is the man...I totally thought I had a B in his class but he changed his grading scale at the last minute and I got an A without the curve...don't even have to take the final now.
Wow what can I say...if you like life lessons then take Datta. He is a REALLY nice guy but you learn NOTHING in his class. The test are just like the online CAPA and he gives you a chance for extra credit. If you just need to pass the class, take him but you won't know much about physics at the end of the semester.
I enrolled in this class for the summer session in order to take the MCAT. I dropped it after 2 days to take some one else. Just letting you know, my honors advisor told me to not take his class, as he does NOT prepare students for the MCAT. If you want to go to medical school, do not take him. He's a very nice man, but a terrible teacher.
I just finished this class with an A, and I have no clue what we were supposed to learn. Rambling seemed to be a major theme. And medieval warfare. Datta's a loveable guy, but his class made essentially no sense.
I failed all the test and got a B+ when I say failed I am talking about scores like 17%. Do the CAPA (make sure it is correct) and the extra credit paper you will pass. Also show up to class this is 25% of your grade he doesn't tell you about this until the end of the year.
I took this class a year ago ending up with A grade. To be fair students who failed this class have no one but themselves to blame. Did they ever go to CAPA session? Did they do the CAPA at all? I mean, once you do your CAPA homework and know how to do them, you will get an "A" easily. I don't understand the guy below complaining that Dr. Datta's c
Dr. Datta is interesting. I took the class because I had to have another science, so I was not interested in physics at all. GO TO CLASS. He is hard to understand sometimes. I basically had to teach myself how to work the Loncapa homework, but do the homework...it helps alot! He is really good about trying to help you understnad, so don't be afra
Datta is crazy, gets off on tangents, doesn't even begin "teaching" until after drop date. All CAPA.
very knowledgeable professor... he just seems to have trouble staying on topic long enough to pass along his information... no attendance taken, just make sure to always do CAPA... dropped our lowest exam grade...
He never used numbers except for a few times, and he rarely gave you the formulas. Expected everyone to know how to look everything up on the internet and said the book was worthless. Ended up with an A, but I still don't know or understand his grading policies.
Dr. Datta is an interesting character to say the least. He's one of the nicest men you'll meet, and he genuinely cares about his students, but he is not a wonderful teacher. If you do the Lon CAPA and come to class, you should be fine. He gives extra credit and curves. By 202, you will know exactly how to survive in this class :)
I like Datta, he's really nice and if you go to his office he will try to help you. The tests come straight from Loncapa, and you also get to use your book. Physics is not easy but as long as you figure out the homework you should do fine. Show up for the classes because he likes to randomly give attendence quizes which are 15% of your grade.
Datta is a fun guy, but his classes are most of the time pointless. Tests came straight from the HW on LONCAPA, so if you do the HW you should be just fine. Didn't take attendance, but randomly gave pop quizzes, so it's best to go to class. Assigned a 50 pt extra credit paper and final was optional. Did the paper and got an A!
Go to class, and do the Capa. Still not sure how he grades things. Most of the time the tests are completely off Capa. Do not take this class if you want to learn Physics. Overall pretty awful experience
Datta is awful! His tests are exclusively off CAPA and are open book. He spends half the class telling students they are "Brilliant!" even if they answer really easy questions. He can't teach but doesn't take attendance, though he will have random quizzes occassionally.
WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN IN MY LIFE! I took the calculus based physics 211 and 212 over the summer. He no idea what was going on with the Capa and the tests. Although, I am pretty sure it's impossible to get lower than a C if you come to class regulary even if you do fail every test. Also was not very friendly to the female transient students.
Worst teacher ever. He has no clue what he is talking about yet he can ramble on for hours. I felt insulted for being put in this class. He is also hard to understand sometimes. Physics was my favorite subject in high school. After that class, I am not a fan. DO NOT TAKE HIM! DONT DO IT!!!!!
You never know your grade until the end. Attendence is mandatory even though you don't learn anything in class. I got a 33 a 65 and a 90 on my tests and ended up with an A. Lots of extra credit opportunity. Get to know him and make sure he knows your name
This class is pretty easy. Test come right off capa with a few curveballs you can figure out. Take this guy even though he is crazy!
I've had Datta for 201 and 202. Attendence is mandatory because he gives in class quizzes. Homework is online. Tests come from capa. He does not teach very well and you do not learn much. Class is pointless, but you have to go. Get to know him. Make sure he knows your name.
This professor did not teach at all. He gives you a list of page numbers to read. Attendance is manditory. There is assigned seating for exam days. He is extremely rude! Save yourself while you can
awful teacher! he does not take attendance but gives quizzes during class. He is really hard to understand and often times goes on tangents that have nothing to do with the class. do not take him unless you are stuck. He does not let you know your grade until the end of the semester but does give extra credit. Test come straight from hw
Literally did not learn anything. Didn't study a thing and somehow made an A. If you're looking to actually learn physics, try for another teacher. If you don't really care, you can get out with an A and minimal effort.
This guy is awful and randomly gives grades. I had way better test grades than some of my classmates that made A's I did all the homework and was there for all of his "quizzes" yet somehow made a B and someone with better grades than me made a C. AVOID HIM.
I had him for 201&202 and got A on both. He gives pop quizzes for attendance. Exams come from CAPA. He is funny and the class is easy. You'll get A but you won't learn anything though.
Dr. Datta teaches the calculus based physics extremely well, both explaining concepts & relating the calculus in ways that are understandable. Really cares about student success and holds students accountable - a rarity these days. Thoroughly enjoyed his class and plan on taking him for 212. Word of advice: try to take vector calc before phys 211.
Won't learn a thing, but you'll pass as long as you do the homework and go to class. Took this class during the summer and had no issues.
You can barely understand his accent half the time. Just do the hw on loncapa because his tests are basically taken from there. You will pass but you don't learn anything. He curves final grades.
Do not take this professor. Yes, he's a nice person, but he does not teach the material you need to know. Find another professor if you want to learn the material in class; otherwise, you'll just end up trying to figure it out on your own.
Datta goes on a lot of tangents, and talks about how he wants his students to be healthy and well-rounded. Pop quiz-style attendance, and exams come almost straight from the homework. Curves the final grade; I was expecting a C (didn't start out doing my homework) and somehow got a B+. Sit in the front and try to introduce yourself.
He is a nice guy, fun class but you will not know what you did until the end of semester. Do you homework and you are going to do great in the test. Let hem know your name and you are going to be like this :). Yes, he is going to give you pop quizzes.
He is one of my favorite professors of all time, because he rewards hard work, is fair in his grading and has so much wisdom to give. a briliant man. I suck at math and science and got a B so u should be fine. Brialliant man with a great personality
Do not take him. He doesn't teach the material you need to know for the homework. And is not very helpful when you ask questions. Just save yourself the trouble and take someone else.
Listen to the other comments... this class is a journey into absolute insanity. Datta shows many signs of dementia with tangential thought, self affirming reasoning, and agitation. The exams vs. what is "taught" in class show zero correlation. Any objective look at this course will quickly dismiss it as terribly flawed. Makes you wonder...
Professor Datta is so funny and he truly cares about his students! The tests are identical to the homework! What you learn in class is irrelevant but you will use some of it to do the homework. He will help you with anything and wants everyone to make an A.
While Datta can't teach at all, he is really helpful outside of class, and he genuinely cares about people more than any professor I've ever met. His class is pretty easy if you're decent at math, a lot of people failed but I thought it was cake.
The only way you could possibly fail this class is if you don't show up to the homework review class, and don't do your homework. He is a super nice professor, and encourages his students to ask questions if your confused. He can be hard to understand at times, but you get used to it. Exams are duplicate questions from homework. Easy A!
One of the worst professors I've had at USC. Does not teach what-so-ever. Goes on random tangents and does maybe one problem per class period, if you're lucky. Horrible teacher, no idea what he was talking about 2/3 of the time. Only upside of this class is that he is very negotiable about test/homework dates
Awesome guy. Really helpful. Happy to be teaching. Loves his students. Do the hw and go to class and you can get an A. Tends to get off track easily but was funny.
Datta teaches you absolutely nothing about physics. However, the homework is half the grade and the most of the test questions come directly from the homework. This class is an easy A. But if you want to actually learn anything your out of luck.
I was not a fan of Datta but he does show that he cares. DONT BUY BOOK, GET CHEGG ACCOUNT. HW problems seemed impossible, but then I got chegg. 98% of all problems were on there as well as correct explanations to solve HW. Exams are same as HW problems just with different numbers.
He told a student to "Google it" when they asked him a question. His lectures weren't helpful in my opinion and his accent made it difficult to understand him sometimes. He doesn't take attendance but he occasionally gives quizzes that can help your grade. Lots of online homework but most of the test questions come from it. Wouldn't recommend.
I went to every class and did all the homework and I would not recommend him at all. He is very disrespectful to students. I went to his office hours to ask some questions about the notes and homework and he suggested that I should just Google it because it wasn't his job to answer questions. The tests are extremely hard and solely based on hw
He makes absolutely no sense, do all your LonCapa in class to be there for the pop quizzes. I did the homework, took the quizzes and I failed every test so far this semester and I have a C in the class without the curve. If you're looking for an easy grade then take. Tests come straight from LonCapa homework problems
I liked him! He's clearly a genius and class was sometimes over my head, but I found him funny at least. Tests come from homework with diff. numbers. Works most of the hw with the class and the rest of hw he'll work during hw sessions. Lets class choose when tests will be. Go to class or he'll call you out :D Do and study the hw and you'll be fine!
Gives attendance quizzes regularly. Draws one diagram on the board and then proceeds to rant and rave for the rest of class. You will learn nothing in class, but he's funny. Copy the formulas from your LonCapa homework into your calculator and you will almost certainly get an 80% on any exam. Left that class with a 55 which somehow rounded to a B+?
I would go to class and work on homework instead of listening (didn't miss anything).Textbook helps, but most of homework is online. The h.w is the hardest part of this class. Memorize the h.w problems and you can get a 100 on the exams. Final is optional. Pop quizzes every now and then, but they are super easy (basically attendance points)
I didn't put any actual ratings because I only took it for 2 days. I can assure you that in those 2 days my insanity was damaged beyond repair. He makes no sense what so ever. It reminded me of that episode of American Dad where Roger pretends to be a college professor and spends every class rambling and making things up as he goes.
He is a really great teacher. Has great mastery over the subject. He is sometimes hard to understand and will go on these rants and tangents for a while. Give pop quizzes at random times, but they are a joke since he gives the answer on the board, so it's more like an attendance quizzes. Do the homework, do okay on the exams and you should be fine
If you want to be utterly confused, then by all means take this class. Physics is hard, but with a teacher who doesn't prepare good notes and outlines, it's harder. The class begins with random scribbles on the board that seem to have come from whatever he decided to teach that day. No set problems, just things he decides to draw.
I feel like I know less about physics after taking him.... and i've never taken physics
Just memorize the homework from LONCAPA and you'll be fine. I did my online homework during class and only came for the attendance quizzes, ended up with an A. No use trying to pay attention to him teaching you won't understand anything.
Datta doesn't teach at all, so really the only reason to go to class is because he occasionally gives pop quizzes. He tells you the answer though, so they're really just for attendance. Memorize the homework problems because the tests are just the exact homework sets with different numbers. The homework is impossible but the answers are all online.
He is a terrible teacher!!!!! Cant teach at all but he's nice and will give out candy if you answer questions in class. The homework is mostly online and test are just like the homework. It really depends on what a effort you can put into class because you're gonna need it unless you're really smart. Good luck!
Class was a joke generally, Prof. Datta would go off on super long tangents about anything but the physics you had to know. That being said Test were EXACTLY like the homework. So do the homework, study the homework a lot for the tests and you are pretty much guaranteed an A. I got A and only missed one part on a question the whole semester.
The lectures were pretty much useless, I just scribbled notes down on a random piece of paper in case he walked by and never looked at them again. Attendance is mandatory because he gives pop "quizzes" that aren't really quizzes but usually a random question. I'm sure he's a genius, but he's a terrible teacher. Tests are identical to LONCAPA.
you'll learn nothing from lecture bc they are all random rants about nonsense, but come to class because he gives "quizzes" which are super easy and worth 20% of your grade. you'll have no clue how to do the hw but the answers are all on google or chegg. exams are identical to hw so just memorize how to do the hw and its an easy A
There is a lot of homework. Not the kind you can just sit down and knock out in 40 minutes. Prepare to spend hours doing loncapa problems. Datta is funny however nothing he says is relevant to physics. If you take Datta you will not learn anything. The only way you will pass is by memorizing how to do the homework. It has been a true challenge.
This class was the worst class I have ever taken. It's not that it's difficult. All you have to do is memorize the hw for the tests, but you have to figure out how to do the hw on LONCAPA before you can memorize them because Datta gives out minimal equations or work on how to work through the problems. Gives pop quizzes a lot so you have to go
This class was downright awful. Hands down the most useless class I've ever taken at USC and probably will ever take here- Datta is a funny individual but teaches nothing in lecture. Don't plan on skipping because he gives pointless quizzes where the answer is on the board, mainly for attendance purposes but they count in your grade. Testsloncapa
Datta is a horrible professor. I went to office hours for help and he was very rude and disrespectful. He proceed to tell me and my other friends that we are unsuccessful students and that we will not get into grad school... I would never take him again. Worst professor I have ever had!!
honestly, before taking this class I read all of those reviews and thought "they're probably just exaggerating", but boy was i wrong. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER IF YOU CAN! Trust me, I'm a good student and dont mind working for my grades, but this teacher really is THAT bad.
Pop quizzes/ attendance sheets. Tests come from homework. Mny classmates used chegg to help complete hw problems. Make sure you have your hw problems memorized, he just changes the numbers for the exam. Final exam is optional, but I suggest you take it . Impossible class? No, just time consuming with hw memorizing so many problems. dnt buy txtbk.
Yes the class is useless and you won't really learn/retain anything whatsoever... but this is probably one of the easiest A's you can get as long as you get a Chegg account & go to every class (bc the attendance quizzes, which were easy 100's, will be worth a significant % of your grade and many people failed to realize that before it was too late)
He's a great guy, knows physics, but fails near completely at communicating a coherent lesson. The classes are filled with inspirational messages about how he will "help you climb the mountain that is physics", but in reality, he's struggles to teach even the simplest formulae. The tests are taken straight from the homework.
He is the best teacher at USC, he is the only person qualified to teach physics at USC, he is great, fair and easy. just do all of the HW and show up to class. Attendance is a quiz grade, you can fail every test and still pass with a B or A.
He's a kind and funny person and a fantastic physicist, but a HORRIBLE professor. He delves into rambles, sometimes using as much as a third of the lecture lambasting a particular student for a minor infraction, or talking about some random unrelated thing. When he does lecture, his proofs are far too advanced, given the prerequisites. Avoid him.
He is a brilliant professor who obviously knows physics very well but he is unable to teach physics very well to people who have never done physics before. His tests are made up completely of LONCAPA questions give or take one or two questions so you basically have to memorize the homework questions to pass and he drops the lowest test grade.
Knows what he's talking about, but not how to communicate it. Avoid taking a class with him if possible. If you have to, make sure you complete all of the homework - and memorize how to do it, because you'll see those questions again on the tests.
I HATE HIS CLASS. HE GOES OVER ONE PROBLEM MOST OF THE CLASS. BEWARE YOU WILL FAIL AND HATE YOURSELF THE ENTIRE SEMESTER.
The only way to possibly pass this class is to memorize exactly how to do every loncapa problem out. You are forced to go to lecture because of surprise quizzes but warning you'll be bored to tears while he goes off on tangents that don't help you at all.
The physics department at USC is terrible all around, but if you want a chance for an A, I would take this class. You can count on the tests being exactly from the homework, but you're requried to go to class because he gives pop quizzes. This is the first year he hasn't dropped a test or exempted people from the final. It sucked.
Clearly knows physics well but cannot convey it in any way that is helpful to students. His lectures are a joke. He expects you to already know physics and only goes over a few HW problems during class. One problem can take the whole class as he often goes on "inspirational" tangents. Tests are straight from the HW though. Do not take his class.
This guy sucks.... he does't really spend any of his class time teaching and his tests are based 100% off of the HW problems. I suggest you download chegg for the HW. I could not stand this class personally. I would not recommend this class to anyone... at all!
Worst professor I have ever had. The man does not know how to teach whatsoever. Hated this class. His tests are straight from the homework but there is so much homework that it's impossible to learn. If you take his class don't even bother trying to follow along in class just spend your time doing the homework and memorizing it.
This is a very difficult class but Datta is a great professor. He'll basically tell you what to study for the tests. The final is optional to replace your lowest test grade. He also gives out candy.
If you want a professor who you will learn about physics from do not take datta. His tests are all from the homework, go to the review sessions and memorize homework and you will past. . In class half of it was him throwing things and trying to relate things to physics. he should've been an actor not a professor but I enjoyed it.
Tests are solely the homework, memorize the homework and you will pass with an A. He made our final required this semester which I think was the first time he did that. He does not cover anything in lecture but you have to go for pop quizzes which count towards your grade.
I went into this class absolutely dreading physics. I learned basically nothing about physics, but since I went to every class, did every attendance quiz, and memorized how to do the homework problems for each exam, I was fine. I never used my book, literally just work the LONCAPA problems over and over, and you'll be fine.
Pop quizzes for attendance. Really easy. Test are 100% off the homework except for like 1 question off the test. Just memorize homework. He's an awful teacher. Lectures are horrible. I always did Loncapa homework in there. Do the problems over and over again and memorize how to do them. Almost impossible without Chegg unless you're a physics major
This man is an awful professor, BUT I would highly recommend his class. His exams are literally the exact same as his homework problems. Study the homework the weekend before the exams, do the hw and come to class pop quizzes and there is now way you won't get an A.
He usually doesn't start talking about physics until the class is halfway over. He spends most of his time giving life lessons and tries to inspire his students rather than teach them. I could have taken this class and passed with the same grade even if he didn't show up to teach. Tests are all based on memorizing homework questions (using Chegg).
Wonderful person. Loves to take lecture time to try to inspire the best in his students. If you sit in the front of the class and engage him in his lectures he will be your best friend. Homework is heavily graded and the exams are straight from the homework, so no excuse not to pass if you put in the time. Really hard, but totally worth it.
Took him back to back 211 & 212. Great professor. Homework is heavily weighted and the exams are straight from the homework, so there is really no excuse to not do the work and pass the class. Sit in the front of the class, volunteer to answer his questions. He notices those that make themselves known. Open and fun atmosphere in lecture.
Datta is hilarious and attempts to engage everyone but its a huge lecture hall. If you do the LONCAPA, you'll easily pass the class. The tests are all LONCAPA problems, just different numbers - so memorize them. He takes random attendance by having you write down the example problem he has on the board and turn it in with your name on it.
Tests are straight from LONCAPA, if you memorize how to do each problem you will be fine. I've gone to him for help and he spends the entire time talking about how I need to be less organized then tells me how to do the problem. Lectures are a waste of time, but you need to go to class because of pop quizzes. He is a funny and enthusiastic.
People in class take advantage of him to move tests and homework dates but he is usually agreeable to what everyone wants. Don't bother paying attention because the tests are exact problems from LONCAPA homework, but go to class for pop attendance quizzes. He is a really entertaining guy and is really nice and funny. Def the best option!
Datta is honestly the most entertaining professor you will ever have. He jumps, shouts, leaps, and gives out candy and even money for answering questions. I didn't learn anything but it was worth a laugh.
Data is probably the most savage professor you will ever have. He doesn' teach physics he teaches life. He always makes you feel feel good about yourself calling everyone brilliant and handsome/beautiful. Oh and the test are just the hw problems so memorize those. If you dont take this class your a scrub who knows nothing of true quality professors
Great guy, terrible teacher.
Honestly he doesn't teach you anything but his class is easy to pass. Just do the HW. I got an F on every test and still passed with a C. Datta is a funny guy and it's a shame he can't teach, because he's so passionate and clearly loves to teach. He gets excited and jumps around. If you want an easy C take him, if you want to learn anything don't!
Not a great prof but he does try to give some inspirational speeches and life lessons. His tests were hard especially since he gives 7 options to choose from. He puts a few questions on the exam that come from nowhere.
Doesn't teach the material in a comprehensible manner. Use Chegg to do the homework, and then memorize how to do the homework because that's what your exams are. Multiple-choice exams. Occasional extra credit opportunities. Pop quizzes as a way of taking occasional attendance. Final was optional this semester (F2017). Funny guy, bad professor.
interesting guy to say the least.. gives random pop quizzes as attendance and he WILL drop you a letter grade if you miss most of these quizzes. He's very scattered brained and doesn't really know how to teach physics. just do the hwk and memorize how to do the problems so you don't have to take final... final is a mix of hmk and new problems
His accent and the complexity of physics made it hard for me to understand and stay attentive. He gives a a lot of homework, which has a big impact on your grade, but its easy to complete with the help of Chegg and other sites. Exams are the homework problems but different numbers, so just memorize the formulas used in the homework.
Truly a nice guy but a terrible teacher. Spent 20-40 minutes every lecture talking about things completely unrelated to physics. I learned absolutely nothing about physics in this class but will probably get an A because I memorized Chegg problems. SO, if you want a relatively easy A, go for Datta. If you want to actually learn, avoid at all costs.
There's about 25 problems for hw due right before each exam. All the answers are on chegg or other online sites. Hw is a big part of the grade so do it & just memorize the hw & you'll do good enough to pass the class. His attendance and quizzes are sporadic so I would recommend to attend the classes. Take him for this class if you want and easy A.
This is an easy class, homework is found on Chegg and exams are mostly homework. If you want a semester where you don't know what's going on with your grade and you're required to sit in lectures that are hard to follow and your peers think having a funny professor is all that's needed to get a good education, take this professor! :)
He's really friendly but not a good teacher. The class is actually pretty easy, just show up in case of pop quizzes, do the homework with Chegg, and then memorize the homework for the exams. Final was optional and extra credit was offered. Take him if you want an easy A, not to learn.
Ok Datta isnt the best traditional teacher, but this class is literally the easiest A if you simply attend class and actually learn how to do the HW problems. He gives EC and explains textbook problems during class. Tests come 100% from those and the HW problems. Above all he is a nice guy, and he will never fail to tell you how brilliant you are
Can't believe this man teaches college physics. Never focused on teaching the material, instead would go off on random stories to make you laugh, well I wasn't laughing once the grades rolled in. Chegg got me a B in this class.
he gives no syllabus, no notes textbook isn't used at all lectures are tedious and rambling he is passionate about physics and brilliant but no idea how to teach lectures about vague concepts with drawn out examples that make no sense tests strictly on the hw content isn't too hard and he cares about students but overall extremely frustrating class
Don't take PHYS201 if you don't need it for your career. I heard other professors' exams aren't as similar to HW as what Dr. Datta gave us. After our 2nd exam, we asked if we could make exam and HW corrections for 50% points back, and he let us. So don't drop until asking him about that. Also everyone I knew who did well on HW had Chegg
I was scared going into his class because of these reviews but I actually really enjoyed him. He wants everyone to pass and even will adjust the ciriculum to what the students wanted. Seriously just memorize the homework questions and you will be completely fine.
Timir Datta is the worst professor that I have ever had or even heard of. He cannot teach at all. His lectures consist of one equation per 50 minutes at most, and despite the amount of time given to it, he can't explain it at all. He stops teaching to give meaningless life lessons every other sentence. If you want to waste a semester, he's your man
Get a chegg subscription and memorize the solutions and you'll get an easy A class. Lectures are pretty boring and don't make much sense, but he believes in testing the understanding of hw so doesn't really matter. Kind of rude when students asked questions during lecture. Doesn't take attendance, but will have pop quizzes on class problems.
Physics is one of the worst departments & he spends his time encouraging us then actually teaching, but you can find all the answers online for hw and memorize them for the test. He takes like 5 problems from hw and usually picks the difficult ones. Also show up to class even though its pointless bc he gives pop quizzes or participation points.
Datta seems like a nice person. However, his lectures will most likely leave you feeling confused at best. Be prepared to buy Chegg or use google to find answers to all the homework problems. Test questions are copied from HW with values changed. Physics was not actually taught, and most of the lecture period was spent listening to Datta rambling.
Professor Datta is the worst professor Ive experienced at USC. He doesnt post powerpoints. During the online class, he doesnt teach and if he does, it doesnt make sense. Everyone always told me that the homework is exactly like the exams. He changed everything so this isnt true anymore, and chegg barely helped.
Did not learn anything in Datta's class. He is not good at teaching online. Class average was a 60 on the 1st exam and he is not curving it. He's a nice guy but the whole Physics Department is terrible at USC.
This class was AWFUL. In the past, exams were very similar to the homework, and that is no longer the case. Even Chegg couldn't help very much for this class, and Datta is nowhere NEAR understanding when students voiced their concerns. He spends most of the lectures talking about anything but physics and doesn't seem to care if we actually learn.
This semester was a rollercoaster, and not a very fun one. I personally had a hard time with the course, but I have also never taken a physics class in my life. I am sure Datta is a MUCH better professor in person. He is so sweet and encouraging. Never rude. The homework was fine, exams are just modified versions of the homework. STUDY FORMULAS.
Dr. Datta isn't the best professor but he does try to help students. Online lectures felt very disorganized & I didn't get much from attending them. Tests were HW questions with different values. HW was tedious and not easy. Physics department is lacking at USC, but probably the best choice for intro physics professors (I had the other prof before)
Terrible at teaching physics. I had him in person and dropped it, then took it online and got an A. He gives so much extra credit and makes HW worth so much its impossible to fail, even after failing the first two exams. If youre failing, just stay until the end and youll get an A. Super annoying class. USE CHEGG. Know formulas, go to SI sessions.
In terms of quality, not that great of a prof, but the class was an intro level physics class. I am unsure how it would be better in-person. He did mention for us students online that this class "is not a distance learning course" and if we needed help we would have to visit him in Cola - even if we lived half way across the country at the time :-)
Gives lectures that do very little in actually helping you learn physics. Homework is super hard compared to what he teaches. He has no idea how blackboard works and gave us two exams this semester that lacked the right answers as an option to choose, screwing everyone's grades. Please don't take this class if you don't have to. It's not worth it.
Professor Datta, besides being an odd lecturer that is difficult to access outside of class and gives broken tests, also cannot seem to give you the correct final grade. I made all As on every exam including the final and did all of my homework and had regular attendance. Despite all of this, I only received a B in the class. Avoid taking him.
idk what these other rates are talking about bc he actually cares about his students, yeah the material is hard and he goes fast but all you have to do is go to him after class or his office hours and hell do whatever it takes to get you to understand. He's genuine and funny but granted he could do better at explaining slowly and thoroughly.
RUN!!! Worst professor I have ever had at USC. Class was unfair which I am not that mad about but this man is the most unhelpful ever. He forgets what he says, unfair, and not understanding. He is very rude to approach. I ended up going to his office for graduate school things, he agreed to do it, then denied our meeting when it was time to submit.
He cares a lot about his students, but he is not very tech savvy, his lectures are hard to follow, and he made all his office hours in person for a virtual summer course which made it impossible for many students to access him. I would suggest heavily paying attention to the homework assignments because they mirror many of his test questions.
Only does formulas and math problems in class. Doesn't teach you the basics of physics, relies on you reading outside of class. The homework is nothing close to the work you do in class. Find a tutor, a friend, or use a website, because this class is horrible on your own. Also, teacher barely knows how to use school mandatory software.
Worst professor I have had. He just throws candy around and barely teaches. Exams are difficult, but I guess the homework somewhat helps.
Nobody can comprehend anything he says. Thoughts and prayers
He is a professor that loves what he does and is very passionate, but he isn't the best at it. He gets distracted very easily, rambles about nonsense all class, can't keep the class focused at all, doesn't actually teach topics he kind of just briefly talks about them, doesn't like to use a textbook or tell you the name of the textbook we have
The guy really cares for his students and I am looking into taking a higher-level course with him for an elective even though my major isn't remotely related to physics. He expects you to participate and if you wanna sit in the back of the class it's not for you. If you interact with him it will make the lectures fun.
Lectures are hit-or-miss, but staying engaged and using resources like unstuck ai can help you succeed. Exams are challenging, but the homework provides a good learning foundation. Worth taking if you're willing to put in the work.
He will go on a tangent about anything and everything, from breast milk to religion and love. Exams are straight from the homework, but you have to teach yourself how to do the homework because he is too busy talking about other things. Easy class to pass if you can teach yourself. He just uses class as an excuse to talk about whatever he wants.
