his red hair and leopard outfits make him look like a tiger....grrrrrrrr
His class is mega boring but hes quite a sexy beast so its worth it.
He's got an interesting wardrobe, although I disagree with the "hotness" comment. He sometimes mumbles so I don't really understand what he says. Critical Thinking is confusing if your mind doesnt work that way...
Take home tests, writing assignments, 1 midterm (VERY EASY) and the final! Everything is scored out of a 4, and if you get a 2(that is an A). You need a 80 to get an A in the class, but it becomes boring at sometimes. HIGH CURVE! He gives HW, but never checks it.
makes boring class fun and is very lenient
I really liked this professor. He is extremely smart and knows how to keep the class entertained. I resepct him alot. However, the class is pretty hard if your mind doesn't work that way.
he articulates very well, and is easy to listen to. the homework are a bit much but there is a decent curve on everything
Excellent teacher, always there to help students. Witty and entertaining. Brit accent/humour/style...I envy his wardrobe! Extremely brilliant, I totally recommend taking any class with him.
By far one the the most engaging classes stonybrook has to offer. Hyde was a grat teacher who will give A's out to a lot of ppl as long as they try. Very helpful at office hours and also very lenient. Only class i really learned anything from last semester.
Interactive, and usually interesting lectures. Very smart and witty, and although you keep waiting for him to snap, he is very easy going and patient with the entire class. Homework could sometimes be difficult, but if you have a half of a brain, you can ace his exams. Just make sure you do all the homework, or he won't let you pass the class. Oh, and he is a little creepy...but what 6'4'' 112 lb. Brit with long, flowing red curly hair in tight outfits isn't?
He's pretty funny, if you pay attention to his lectures they are quite interesting. They may be difficult to follow at times but interesting still. Its very easy to get an "A" in his class, he usually gives huge curves, 1/3 of your grade is just taking notes for one class and then reading them next class. He gives extra credit for easy quizes
His class is boring at times and I don't understand his lectures sometimes but as long as you study from the class notes you'll do well on the exam.
i loved this guy, hes smart and witty- if you show him a half ass attempt at doing what you need to youll do alright. read the readings!
Highly stimulated, I was rewarded deeply by this professor's instruction methods & insightful analysis of ancient philosphical texts. While the class was foundational in fact, in context I was inspired & challenged. While untouchable, this professor proved approachable and accomodating (highly) in grading. To be seduced by such a influential force!
One of the best philosophy classes I've taken; his lectures are interesting and informative and he is extremely helpful and friendly during office hours. Doesn't give very much reading considering the subject matter. Wears lots of crazy clothes, etc. Highly recommend.
very helpful, educated, knowledgeable, and a relatively easy grader.
Brilliant and fun lectures. He has a good way of giving his opinion while keeping it seperate from the material, and his opinion is usually pretty damn interesting. Anyone with a mild interest in philosophy will enjoy a class with him.
Tim Hyde's approach to teaching the ancients is great. Discussion in class is cruicial to understanding the material well enough for exams/paper, which means you shouldn't miss class, for your own good. Grades are based on 25% midterm, 25% final, 50% paper. So if you're writing sucks and you don't like getting help... go somewhere else.

can you say best professor EVER?
Very simple class. Take it as a dec for an easy A.
Not the class I expected it to be. All we did was read "The Repblic" by Plato. It was interesting although I wish we explored many philosophers. YOU MUST READ THE TEXT AND IT IS VERY HELPFUL TO ATTEND REVIEW SESSIONS!
A truly original professor, Tim actually cared more about what we learned than making us endlessly prove ourselves. The readings are brief but incredibly dense, and unless you're brilliant and/or find it engaging, you'll be thankful for his lectures. He cut out 1/3 of our planned coursework just to slow down and ensure we understood the other 2/3
This professor is the best philsophy professor i have ever had! He makes so much sense when he speaks. he truly cares about us. he really tries hard to persuade us in many ways about certain philsophical ideas. he is also a very fair grader! I highly recommend him any time!
he was awful. thank god for the TA because if i just had to depend on professor hyde i would have failed. everyone in the class would have failed if it weren't for Mark Green :-)
With the enthusiasm of a first year teacher, and the brilliance and eloquent speaking style of a veteran in his field, he will transform the way you view the world. I'm currently enrolled in my fourth class with him. He is mandatory for anyone who wants to better themself and push the limits of their mind.
I can't believe he doesnt have more chile peppers next to his name...I think he is very sexy
Good teacher but the class has some hard concepts to understand. Gives quizzes on the reading often so you have to be prepared. Gives out handouts every class to answer as he lectures to help get important points. Only two essay tests the whole semester so pay attention and try to start preparing your answers ahead of time, not the night before.
Extremely hard. nothing more to say.
Professor Hyde is awesome. He's an extremely intelligent person and a wonderful teacher. Tests are easy, as the questions are given in advance. Course material is extremely interesting. Lectures always enjoyable. He also posts his lectures and power points on bb which is useful for studying. Strongly recommended.
Great teacher. Very witty, most jokes will go over your head if ur dumb. The concepts of Plato are hard but he does a good job in giving some real world context to the work. very enthusiastic about the course and material. Def. an expert so dont take it for grantite.
overall, the course is incomprehensible if you don't have background knowledge. quizzes are tricky, exams are essays in class. HELL NO. RUN AWAY. QUICKLY.
AMAZING! His lectures were remarkable and very interesting. He gives you all the readings and clearly talks about each philosophers. He gives you all the resources to do well AND he is has no problem helping anyone. I respect his knowledgeable and approachable manner when defining each philosopher. Excellent professor. Will def take him again!
Had this class in the morning and I'll admit it gets boring at times but overall it was a relatively easy course. Do attend class as quizzes are given almost everyday. The exam questions are posted on the friday day so no suprises. Take it you wont be let down!
THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! All he does is read off a piece of paper... he READS HIS LECTURES! The man could just make us get copies and save us all the time... his TA did ALL the grading and ALL the work, this man does nothing but think he is cool with his accent. Stay away, my Grandma could teach better... she only speaks German
It really does not get any better than this guy. He is brilliant and, on top of that, very funny. People here often complain about difficulty, and rightfully so. The material is difficult and there is no way around this. Even so, Hyde will do anything he can to help you understand. Will slow down or speed up syllabus to go with pace of class
It could get a bit boring at times and the reading is rather important, but it is a joy to hear this guy speak. He's funny and intelligent and made the class worth taking.
He is amazing! The lectures are so interesting and he describes everything to point of crystal clearness. He really wants you to learn and is so willing to help. Format of the class:about 4 hrs of reading each week, 25% for each midterm and 1 paper 50%. I have had him before and will take him again. Would like to see him teach more 300 levels. <3
extremely helpful..even though the class is boring most of the time, he def keeps it interesting..there are handouts to fill out everyday but the answers are in his powerpoint..quizzes are easy as long as you read the book..and he gives u midterm and final exam questions before hand..great teacher take his class!
Most Professors in the dept. are hit or miss. This guy is definitely a hit. The coursework is not demanding, but you have to do your share to get a good understanding of the ancients. Teaches a very down to earth and interactive lecture. He's extremely helpful in office hours too. I've had him teach me twice and hopefully again.
Funny professor, and gave daily quizzes on the reading. Just do what you're supposed to do by attending lectures & paying attn in class, & you'll be fine. I would take another class with him.
Amazing. Absolutely the best class.
Pretty cool professor, funny but can be boring at times. Can't get through the class without reading though. Quizes in just about every class about assigned reading. Exam questions posted on the syllabus, class is worth taking.
Amazing... just so amazing. Best professor I've had in the philosophy department AND at Stony Brook. So insightful, knows his stuff, and BRITISH!! In all seriousness he is really great and teaches me more in this class in ONE class period than i learn in a semester in other classes.
EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! A very good professor. I recommend him to everyone.
Very knowledgable professor. He lectures from what he knows and from his personal opinions rather than straight from the text. Funny guy and curses sometimes in class. In class quizes almost every class. Questions to the midterm and the final are given at the begining of the semester. Can get by with sparknotes but reading the texts gets you an A+
hes a funny person to listen to, has an awesome british accent and spaces out occasionally. dresses amazinglyyyy. He really is a good teacher and is very interesting to listen to. His class is worth taking, it'll make you laugh at times
hes a funny person to listen to, has an awesome british accent and spaces out occasionally. dresses amazinglyyyy. He really is a good teacher and is very interesting to listen to. His class is worth taking, it'll make you laugh at times. its a great class
He's a good professor if you're a die-hard fan of philosophy, but if you're just looking for an easy class, you better run. One quiz for most classes, so not attending really hurts; plus there's the pressure to know the material inside out every class, so it's quite stressful if you're tight on time. Midterm and final are open questions-->HARD.
He is a wonderful/HELPFUL++ lecturer and really turned me from loathing philosophy to actually enjoying what it has to offer. You HAVE to attend class, 50% of grade = the in class sheets/quizzes. He gives midterm/final Qs ahead, but pretty difficult (I was guided a lot this semester, TY - YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!:) Duh, it's rough.. it's philosophy ;)
really interesting guy, can be boring at times, quizzes every other day but tend to be easy. The midterm/final questions are posted on blackboard. A pretty easy class.
Extremely easy class. He post the exam questions at the beginning of the semester. No need to buy textbook cos you can find it online everywhere. However, you do need to attend class, which is very boring. 50% of graed comes from attendence and class-quizzes. Quizzes are easy and straight-forward though.
Interesting class. Lots of work, but worth it. Material is interesting, and made even more so by his lectures. I highly recommend him.
great teacher. He changed his suit every class!! Attandence is absolutely neccessary! Lots of quizzes. But I tell u man, that class is really useful. You find youself think a lot more than before
there is a quiz every class.. cant really undrstand his accent at times and the room is huge so ppl in the back cant hear him since for the half of the time he lectured without a mic. so try to sit in the front. decent class to fulfill dec..exam questions are tough to look for though and he requires long answers (must fill up entire blue book)..
Excellent professor. Extreemly helpful
If you want to get an easy A or be enlightened, I strongly recommend Dr. Hyde's Philosophy 100. It really is unbelievable to see a professor who goes out of his way to assist all students and replies promptly to all emails, whenever you ask for help. In fact, I'm planning on taking another class with him! And the quizzes and tests arent bad at all.
Professor Hyde is awesome. He definitely doesn't make this course a walk in the park, but he makes it fun, and most of all he's FAIR! We had quizzes almost every class, but he gives you the questions in advance! Fair attendance policy, and just a nice guy. Definitely take this class!
Tim Hyde is by far the best professor in SBU. I am taking another class with him and are planning on taking 300 next semester. He goes out of his way to help students and if you do the mandatory reading you will ace the quizzes no problem. Highly recomend!!!
This class is mandatory, Makes sure you do the reading-- Basically a quiz every class on the reading. Theres also handouts to fill out making sure your paying attention. The class is really BORING but it is an easy A!
Best DEC class I've ever taken! Dr. Hyde is absolutely hysterical, and has some crazy suits! If you don't want to go to class or do any work, this class isn't for you. The reading is usually a couple pages before class, and the quizzes are EASY. If you want a fun worthwhile class where you will ACTUALLY learn something, I HIGHLY recommend this one!
Definitely one of the best DEC classes and professors on campus. Attendance is mandatory, and there is an EASY (if you do the reading) quiz every class. Dr. Hyde is very helpful and interesting; one of the few profs on campus that really care about their students. If you have the opportunity his class is a MUST take- especially of you like phi
I had his class at 8:20 am tues and thurs. He gave out surprise quizzes once a week based on the reading at 8:21 and if your'e late you can't take it. On time attendance & quizzes 40% of your grade. 2 really thorough tests and 2 easy papers. His lectures r really good but too much work for a 100 level class. SKIP!
Early class, quizzes all the time, a lot of reading and it's a pretty demanding course for a 100 level class
Attendance is mandatory because there is either a quiz/handout due in class. A good class to take to fulfill DEC requirement. Would not take freely though because philosophy definitely is not my interest. Very unorganized, but tries his best.
Hyde is an awesome teacher! I had him for PHI 101 and PHI 300. Both classes were actually a pleasure to be in. Keep up with the readings, listen to what the guy has to say (after all, he is rather brilliant) and participate... He wants to hear what you think! This will get him to know you and prepare you for writing his essays.
For those who say that there is a surprise quiz ignore them. The quizzes are announced and the questions practically emailed to you before class. Excellent professor and very understanding.
He is not a bad teacher, however, there's only so much you can do with philosophy (it's such a boring subject!) Books for the class are optional. Attendance however is mandatory as he has worksheets for every class and quizzes once/twice a week. Philosophy is a really hard subject so unless you're good at it DONT TAKE IT. Sparknotes helps a lot tho
I had to take this class at 8:05 and let me tell you, it's not fun. He has quizzes once/twice a week and it's super early. If you're late you'll miss it. Attendance is mandatory because he has worksheets. Philosophy is boring but spark notes helps a lot. Overall he's a very passionate teacher but if philosophy is not your thing, do NOT take it.
Dr. Hyde is definitely a brilliant man. The only reason I took the class was because of all the pressure of Orientation, and I know there are other DECs I could have taken. Read the books, all except Hume are easy and just memorize his power points. He's also approachable after class if you need clarification.
quiz topics can be definitely unclear
This professor is one of those professors you have and never forget. Dr. Hyde is the epitome of a kind, compassionate, and brilliant professor. I received a B on the final and As on everything else and was assigned an A-. Sent him an email and he changed it to an A.
A lot of reading (aka SparkNotes), quizzes under ten questions mostly every class, short 2-3 pg paper due at midterm and final, difficult tests but not impossible, and all the slides are online. Great professor, lame subject - his suits are more interesting than the lectures!
Very difficult material, but Dr. Hyde does a more then adequate job navigating through the readings. Def not my favorite course taught by him (the Ancients and even his Freshman Republic classes are fantastic) but nonetheless Tim does a fantastic job as always.
He wears some real fantastic suits
He's a great professor and he genuinely knows and loves his subject. Philosophy can be tricky, but he explains everything very well and always answers questions. Keep up with readings and take notes, and you'll get great grades. And he wears awesomely hilarious suits every day!
This class involves a lot of keeping up but it's virtually impossible to get a bad grade. I don't understand a thing he's talking about but he's so entertaining his class is enjoyable. attendance is NECESSARY. overall a good choice.
a lot of work. gives a quiz almost every day based on long readings and no matter how thoroughly you read the quiz is impossible to pass. doesnt respond to emails neither do his TA's.
You must go to class, quizes almost every class. The quizzes aren't too bad but I never picked up the book. Spark notes works fine. The exams are difficult but the curve is ridiculously generous. He is a great professore, I loved going to lecture to hear him speak plus he wears amazing suits!
This class definitely one of the most philosophy classes I've taken in Stony Brook. Half of the semester was pure Ancient History. The midterm was 100 multiple choice questions; very difficult, but extremely generous curve! The other half was only Plato. Hyde is an expert in Platonic philosophy. You must be willing to work hard to get an A.
This class is boring. It is pointless to teach a philosophy class to 220 students. I have come out of this class with a lot of knowledge, but no skills on how to think philosophically. Why do philosophers ask so many questions?! It's so annoying
Attendance was not taken. No work other than two essays that could be filled with generalized content below page requirement. Lenient grader. Perhaps the easiest A of all the professors I've had thus far.
Please don't take this class with him unless you don't have a choice.
I had a hard time understanding Hyde. The worse part is how he phrases his questions on the exams here's an example: What is the goal of life for an Epicurean? A) Pleasure B) moderate pleasure C) maximal pleasure D) abstinence from excess E) Absence of pain. In the book the answer is: the removal of physical pain and mental anxiety. GO FIGURE!
had no interest in philosophy at all & found this class pretty easy, a few papers (just re write your class notes) and thats IT.no attendance, no textbooks. EASY grader, just wants to see that you try. love him & his suits..
He has the best wardrobe and vocabulary and is super articulate. I love the way he talks, I can listen to him lecture all day. Attendance is not mandatory and he provides all the reading online.
He didn't take attendance but I always attended class because his sharp wit and dark sense of humor made the lectures very enjoyable. He is very helpful and generous with grading.
The exams are tough, but the curve is amazing. I got a B+ on the final, but didn't put in the effort during the semester, hence my grade. He's funny and will answer any question you ask to the best of his ability. Check your email before studying. It'll help you focus on key topics. Attend class! Quizzes and worksheets make up most of the grade
Professor Hyde is a great professor, he tries to add some humor to every lecture since they can be really boring. His tests are difficult, even if you go to every lecture and read the book. However, the curve is extremely generous!
Hyde is one of the best professors on this campus. Very passionate about philosophy, very knowledgable, makes jokes in class. the essay answers comes from in class notes so you have to go! He is also very approachable outside of the classroom and will entertain you as he is a very intelligent and understanding person. Highly recommend !
Never see anyone love colorful suits as much as him. Professor Hyde is a nice guy, tests are hard, but you can make up those points by taking the quiz. He gives the question beforehand, I recommend work it out before the quiz and check with him, he helps you get the answer right. Even though attendance not required, but he takes into account of it.
Professor Hyde is great. He knows so much about Hegel, Heidegger, the ancient philosophers, and everything else. I don't understand who is rating these professors, but they should basically have 5s for everything
Professor Hyde is brilliant. He's passionate about the subject matter and he's such an interesting lecturer - enough to convert non-philosophy majors. He is a dedicated teacher, he's hilarious, and he wears great suits. Take any of his classes. He is brilliant. Also, he looks like Brian May, the guitarist from Queen.
i so hated this class, i fell asleep everytime i went, the way he phrases the questions on the midterm is so weird, the only reason i got a decent grade was because the curve was so large,i think hes a good professor this is just boring class so dont take unless you have to
Hyde seems to play favorites when grading. Students he likes get the best grades regardless of how much work they do. If you are really into metaphysics and ancient philosophy he will favor you over others. Hyde likes students to participate in discussion but the way he encourages students to participate is discouraging.
Hyde's Intro to Ancient Philosophy is very history oriented and quite dry, but he knows that and tries his best to make it bearable. He requires weekly readings and online quizzes, as well as 4 noncumulative exams. They are extremely hard, but he curves very generously. He challenges you, but is fair.
Tests are hard but extra credit always helped. Go to class!
Professor Hyde is definitely one of the coolest guys on campus. I was told by a friend that one of the things to do before you graduate is to take a class with him, and I think it was worth it. He teaches in bad ass suits while lecturing in a sublime British accent. He makes ancient Greek history interesting, but reading is essential.
Takes attendance, assigned seating. The lectures are interesting and funny, but there is a LOT of information. Getting even HALF the questions right gets you a B, but there is SO much stuff to learn for each test - 18 pages of terms for the first one alone! Don't even bother trying to learn it all. Focus on what he specifically brings up in class.
The subject for this course is rather boring, but he does really try to make sure that the students are interested, the tests are hard but if you do the reading you'll pass, gives a reading quiz basically every time online before class. Its a lot of work, but it's essential if you want to go further in philosophy courses. Plus his suits are amazing
Professor Hyde is someone who provokes thought and makes you more keen of your surroundings. Granted, I am not too interested in philosophy, but his class will make you think outside the box and in ways you never have before. He is a hilarious professor who will astound you with his wardrobe. Definitely recommended for satisfying GLO and HUM SBCS.
Attend all lecture, do all the reading (there is a lot of reading). Possible to get an A if you are a good note taker. He is very helpful if you reach out to him.
Probably the coolest professor I have had yet! Although, this class is not easy! But if you have some interest in PHI you will be okay. If you are only taking it for a SBC, I would recommend something easier. Although, the curve was HUGE. Many people did not do well on the tests and still did okay. He also takes attendance so you must attend class.
