group tests!
Great teacher, funny and interesting
Slowest talker ever. Boring as anything. EASY EASY EASY
pretty easy, but extremely boring
Easy, laid back class.
Easy overall. Speeches are hard to do well on. Tests easy.
Good class, very laidback. Study notes and book and tests will be fine.
Go to class and study the night before tests, and you'll get a good grade.
awesome prof!! really easy going and it's a relaxing class!!
cool guy, lots of fun, tough grader... too hard to do well on speeches
very easy, laid-back class; good teacher, i definitely recommend him
Awesome Prof., laid back class, all you do is play game, get on his good side
Very nice, class is pretty slack, just few presentations, tests are really easy
Easy overall but the man won't give A's... but extra credit makes up for it
easy fun class, nice guy.

This guy is the man! A pleasure to take the class, awesome material, helpful!!!
Communications=JOKE! JUST went to class only on required days and took an A.
Laid back, speeches=helpful, class material=whatever, GCOM sucks but he is cool

really easy class, great guy, not much work, extra credit, definitely take him

not a lot of homework and projects, only 2 speech presentations (1 individual, 1 group), very organized notes for tests, speaks in a very easily understood manner when teaching, usually lets students out early
Awesome guy, you'll want to hang out with him. He makes the awful subject of GCOM fun. Easy test and fair grader. Near no homework.
very chill teacher! class is kinda boring but easy
Easy class...awesome guy..friendly...class is easy...no hw...just some small stuff...cool guy
Awesome guy, class sucks @$$, but he makes it better. No homework at all.
I hated his class, he does nothing to help prepare for tests or talk about GCOM in class. He is a terrible teacher and I don't advise anyone to take his class, unless you want to have your time and money wasted!
Tim is an awesome teacher!! We had to do 2 group presentations that you do have to work for, but not hard at all. Study for the tests and you will do fine. If you take this class Tim's the guy to take it from.
Tim is great!! the class isnt that easy but he makes it fun and not boring. the only work you have to do is the 2 group projects...not hard at all. definitly take tim!
He does not teach- hes a really cool guy, but you teach the info to yourself-
He's a really good teacher, and a really good guy. He's funny, he's cool, and he'll help you if you need it. There's very little homework, and his tests are all from the powerpoints (available on black board) and from the book. He's a great teacher.
Tim is an awesome guy. Easy class. Easy tests. Fair Grader. Take him definitly
Laid back and funny, class material is not interesting but he makes it tolerable. Some work outside of class (community service learning, journal assignments, group project and presentation) but tests aren't hard. I def. suggest taking him for 350.
He's a generally good guy, and his class is resonable. I like the subject, but he would of made it interesting either way. Oh and the presentations are a ****. But that's GCom for ya.
Tim's a great guy, though I honestly don't remember learning anything in his class. It all felt like common sense to me...
started out nice, turned pretty moody halfway into the semester. funny guy, though he seems like he's not too interested in anything. hard to approach.
Sorry. Don't take him for 280. He's really vague and this is a class you need to know what you're doing. If you're looking for specifics on how to write your paper, don't take him. Bunch of tests, boring lectures, horrible paper that consumes your life.
Really nice and honest teacher. Definitely not easy - you have to read the book and study hard for tests, but he is really helpful and always willing to meet outside of class if you have questions or problems. You will have nightmares about the lit review though - don't take this class with 261!
Tim is very personable yet professional. I found him to be very helpful and understanding. I dont advice taking 280 with 261 either; its not suicide but fatal. I would recommend Tim for 280!
Dr. Ball is great. Class is great. Book is boring. He is HOTTTTTTTTTTTTT. Get in line ladies.
he deserves a chile
Tim is a really fun teacher to have. I was nervous about presentations, but he gradually eases you into it. I think he's very friendly, personable, and approachable. Definitely would suggest!
easy, but annoying. says the same thing over and over again. i didnt like him very much and class is pointless, but he isnt horrible
Tim is the greatest. I mean, the class has to suck, just by definition, but he makes it tolerable. Workload isn't very much, mainly just preparing the presentations. Calls off class occasionally. Does have a 3 limit attendance policy tho, which definately sucks.
Dr. Ball was an AWESOME guy. Nice, funny, and approachable. The classes were boring, but the class itself has boring material so it's not really his fault. Grades pretty easily and gives study guides for tests. Makes taking 280 (required for scom majors) not so bad! Take him!!!
This guy is such a tool. The class material is so easy and everybody knows it but he tries to make it hard. Attendance policy where you can only miss 3 classes and unlike most professors he actually enforces b/c he knows no one will come if he doesn't. DONT TAKE HIM You'll become suicidal if you do
Dr. Ball is a good professor, however, the course material is incredibly boring. He is pretty funny and he grades very easy. Study guides are provided for tests. There is an attendance policy. If you go to class, you'll do well.
Ball is such a great guy. His class isn't EASY, but you learn a lot and he makes it so much fun. Very laid back!!
I think he's cute, lol. He's a cool guy and even though the class is boring, just being near him is an incentive enough to go.
Awesome class! Dr. Ball rocks my socks off - he's funny and amused easily. He's happy to answer any questions that anyone has, regardless of it's connection to the lecture. Let's us out early, friendly, gives study guides, multiple choice tests...I can't wait to take him again!
This guy rocks my socks off, too. He is one of those professors who pretends to be apathetic but really loves his students and teaching. It is a lot of work, but he rewards you if you put the effort forth. Research Methods was one of my favorite classes, which says a LOT about him as a professor :)
Overall the teacher wasn't that bad. He wasn't boring and the material wasn't hard. He made my first semester more enjoyable
Timothy Ball---what a GREAT man!! I loved him as a person, hated the class though. He always posts powerpoints but you can only miss 2 classes. His tests were impossible, but you have 6 papers worth 100 pts each to bring your grade up. He grades really easy on the papers too!! TAKE BALL if you want a fun and interesting class!!
Very nice man! Helps you with anything. The speeches are not bad at all. Can really boost your grade if you do what you are suppose to do. Tests are short and usually not that bad. Sometimes doesn't cover everything but speeches can bring up ur grade! Very cool guy! Class isn't boring.
Very interesting class, and Dr. Ball is awesome. He is very laid-back.
i love t-ball! gcom was an amzing class! tests were actually quite difficult. my avg. was about an 75. speeches really help boost your grade, i finished with an A. very nice guy. great teacher. MUST TAKE!!
He is very nice, but I find his presenttions to be boring and his class a waste of time. His tests are easy, but since his answer chooses suck, they are kind of hard. I don't like the speech topics or areas we have to deal with but the teacher is nice. My problem is more with the subject he teaches (and his tests) than him, he is very nice and if y
He's a great teacher. You just really have to read the text book and go to class. He isn't boring at all. I personally like this class. Very interesting. I never thoguht of communication the same way after this class. Speeches we're very nerve racking just because i'm not a big speech person but i eventually got better. Got A's actually... He's als
Kind of pretentious, but the more you get to know him the nicer he gets. No tests, just projects and presentations. Not an easy A, but I don't think this class will be easy no matter who you take it with. Go for Dr. Ball, he's pretty amusing with his sarcasm.
He is nice but he grades presentations really hard. the tests aren't hard and reading the book isn't necessary. you have to do service learning which is 50% of your grade which sucks. but all in all he's a decent prof so i recommend.
Tim was the best professor I had at JMU. I took 4 classes from him and each was great in its own way. GCOM is very boring for most but he's fair in his grading and puts the appropriate amount of effort into the class. The upper level Org Comm classes are awesome with Tim. Can't say enough good things about him - great professor
Such an awesome professor. This class was really interesting. It sets you up for the real world. He can grade presentations hard, but I did great on everything, you just have to try and you will do well. Such a helpful guy. Will help you at any cost. Classes are open discussion and are interesting and fun. Love this class & professor! Take him!!!!
LOVED HIM! Dr. Ball is one of the nicest men you will ever meet. His class has a very laid back atmosphere for a public speaking class. He told so many funny stories about himself, and rarely ever gave boring lectures. The speeches can be intimidating but he is a fair grader. Just make sure you prepare yourself and read the book before tests!
TAKE HIM! Dr Ball is super chill and one of the nicest men ever. He is really funny and has a dry sense of humor. I'm gonna miss this guy. He's kind of tough on grading speeches but he's reasonable. Again. take him!!!
He considers doing everything right a B. A's are very hard to come by. He barely teaches in class so going is pointless though it's required. Not too many speeches and tests are multiple choice.
He was a good teacher - tough grader on speeches (AND OUTLINES), but otherwise very good, very funny. Take him!
Very minimal work required. No homework. Your grade consists of 3 speeches,an essay (that relates to your speech), three tests and the final. The book is necessary, since he does not review for tests. He is a tough grader on speeches and outlines. But he is a good teacher - very funny and helpful.
Dr. Ball is the perfect combination of personable and professional. I have not taken a Communications professor or class that has helped me more than Dr. Ball's class. If you're lucky enough to have an opportunity to take Dr. Ball, leap at the opportunity. He is one of the best assets that James Madison University has to offer.
Pretty chill professor. I think he's a tough grader for a class like this. I wish that I had taken GCOM 123 instead, just because it's easier. But, Dr. Ball is really cool in that he treats us like adults and is very down to earth. He once even flipped off to illustrate a point...Haha, he's a funny guy.
Nice guy but probably the hardest grader I've ever had. If you are not an amazing public speaker don't take this class, because in addition to the speeches that are impossible to get a good grade on the tests are hard and impossible too.
Take Prof Ball! He's such a cool guy, and he's really helpful if you just ask. He gives study guides for each test that has everything that will be on the test, so if you fill them out you will get a good grade, and the speeches aren't bad. He's my favorite prof so far and I'm really going to miss him!
Dr. Ball was my FAVORITE professor this semester as a freshman! Definitely take him!! He is so much fun to be around, you will need to spend time studying, but class is lots of fun!
So Tim Ball is really boring and his lectures are painful to listen to (because he is monotone). He is really nice though. In my class we had GTAs and they were awesome.
Nice guy and all but not very clear with instructions and a harsh grader on speeches. Take him if you feel comfortable with your public speaking skills, if not then I wouldn't recommend.
Dr. Ball's lectures were pulled directly from the textbook reading so class felt unnecessary and therefore annoying. The GTA system was horrible. People didn't show up to the lectures bc they weren't mandatory, and then the GTAs were very inconsistent; their grading and ability to handle their class sections seemed unmonitored by Dr. Ball.
This class was definitely really easy, especially since we only had to go to the sessions with our TAs. Tests revolve around the textbook. Speeches are easy.
Dr. Ball is a great guy and certainly wants his students to succeed. Tests aren't bad as long as you read the textbook but he is a little harsh with the grading on speeches. If you feel comfortable with public speaking I would take him... if not I wouldn't recommend. I liked him though.
Dr. Ball is a pretty boring professor. His lectures are long and he's pretty monotone. There were a lot of assignments and a lot of reading. If there weren't GTAs that interacted with us and lectured sometimes, I would have spent every class asleep. It was pretty easy though.
His lectures are EXTREMELY BORING and pointless. He just reads all the headings in the books. Its not hard but it is just too boring to handle. He also has A RIDICULOUS attendance policy.
The lectures are super boring and long and Dr. Ball just reads right off an outline. You only really need to go to the sections with your GTAs, but attendance is mandatory with Dr. Ball. The class was easy with a lot of fluff assignments and you don't have to give your speeches in front of him, so it isn't a lot of pressure.
Lectures are probably the most boring thing I've ever sat through which stinks because attendance is mandatory. Lectures were read straight from an outline with little or no additional information added. Tests were okay if you studied the book. Grading scale was bad; you could only get an A if you got a 95% or above which is virtually impossible.
I took the honors group class. We didn't do anything until the end and then he graded really hard. He is very good at taking feedback. No extra credit. Thinks he knows everything and is funny but he's not. I did do cool interviews and used camera equipment. I loved my group and that made the class awesome. No speeches. just visual presentations.
Although I took 121, there were no speeches and everything was group projects. Even if you like group projects, his requirements (which were very vague) were impossible and contradictory. His clarifications only caused more confusion. His lectures were useless, and his grading policy makes no sense. This class took over my semester and I learned 0
121 is supposed to be a mix, but everything was in groups (the same group all semester). The projects were a pain and the requirements were very confusing, and his attempts at clarifying made no sense. Almost everything he says is contradicting. The 3 tests were online in class and were pretty easy, but you have to teach yourself the material.
Eh, an alright professor, but nothing super standout. He makes powerpoints from the book with little deviation to mind opening discussion.
Dr. Ball is a great professor. He has a dry sense of humor but he's actually so nice. Gives study guides for tests & gives points back on test questions most people missed. Gives extra credit if you take the MREST by a certain date. Grades strictly on group presentations but gives lots of good, constructive feedback. Wants to see students succeed!
His lectures are pretty long and monotoned for the most part but the slides are information packed (in a good way). His test questions are fair as long as you study. He cares about his students and their success. He puts everything online and gives lots and lots of feedback.
Lectures are fairly boring, but tests aren't very hard. Clear about how to gain points in his class and gives good study guides. Tough grader on group presentations, but gives good feedback.
He was a good professor, but nothing special (for SCOM 123). I've heard that he is amazing in upper level SCOM classes, but I only took him for SCOM 123 and he was fine.
Lectures are very long and boring to listen to. There are TA's who teach recitation sections and they are very helpful. Easy class, study for tests and you'll be fine.
Lectures can drag on, but Dr. Ball makes them funny. Graduate students teach on Fridays and give lectures randomly which make the class sometimes interesting. Tests are taken online in class, and study guides are provided so they aren't too bad.
It's not worth it for Gened. Take another professor.
Nice guy and knows a lot on the subject. Tests were usually easy B+ to A- if you knew the basics of the material. Puts a lot of weight in your grade as attendance so you have to show up AND answer the tophat questions correctly to get good "participation" grade.
He is a good teacher and I understood things in class but you have to read the textbook to do well. He grades presentations harshly and is not the nicest. Not the worst, not the best. Does not round grades.
Took this class for a gen ed requirement and was group presentations. It is really hard to get a group to meet when everyone has conflicts with classes and extracurriculars. We had lots of work for preparing for our presentations, and on top of that had more work to do out of the text book that did not pertain to the presentations. Doable, Beware.
okay, so Tim Ball is a very nice guy and I loved working in my group, but there was so much miscommunication on what he expects from us. multiple times we have had him review an assignment prior to turning it in and he approves it, only to give us a bad grade when it is actually submitted. frustrating grader, but very nice person
I only had Dr. Ball for one day a week and a grad student teach the other day of this class so I didnt see him much but he was an okay guy, He was a little dry but could make lectures interesting with pictures and videos. If I had to sit there with him for more than just 50 minutes it wouldve been less fun but he wasnt bad.
This class was frustrating because you don't pick your presentation groups but the entire group also gets one grade. You better hope you get a good group, also the presentations are graded quite strictly, no one got an A on the first presentation even though there were a few I thought deserved an A. I would not take this class if you don't have to.
Professor Ball is really nice and his lecture class can be really fun. He tries to tie recent events into the lecture. You don't have to do much work just read the chapter and answer a couple questions. He gives study guides for you to do for the tests. Overall he's very nice and I recommend you to take his class.
Dr. Ball was very kind but he did not do a very good job at actually TEACHING the class. He made us learn from our textbook and spent the class time not really doing anything.
Dr. Ball is a kind man who makes lectures entertaining, even if the content is dull. Large lecture class on Mon and smaller sessions(30 students) and a graduate assistant on Wed. The presentations are graded harshly but you should improve by the second speech and receive a better grade. Personally, I liked the style of this class (laid back).
I don't know JMU was trying to go for in this year of scom but i had this huge lecture class with Mr Ball and he basically just made us watch Youtube videos for an one class every week and then we would go and have classes with our TA's who were suppose to teach us but couldn't because we only meet once a week. This SCOM class was dumb.
This class was ridiculous. Didn't really get much from him as a professor. It's really the TA you get which determines your grade. Read the book for the homework quizzes (these can definitely break your grade) but don't bother for the test because the tests are all inferences. If you want an A, go to a smaller class.
Just an average class. Kinda boring, but not too much work. We had 2 group speeches, some reading quizzes, and a couple of small assignments. Read the textbook and you should be fine. The final is difficult, but it's the same test for all scom classes, so it's not just his final that's hard.
fun, interesting helpful class. prof is nice and helpful, though slightly monotone voice. quite a lot of projects/presentations, most independent, one in pairs you choose. very slow in grading. quite a bit of work but not horrible, and no tests, and examples and rubrics for almost all. to my knowledge, better to take him than whitfield
This professor is a tough grader, and does not make grading criteria clear. You are responsible for reading the text book on your own and knowing everything for the exam. He does not go over the text book in class. The professor is funny and makes class enjoyable, but you definitely have to work for an A. However, getting an A is not impossible.
Everyone was forced to take this class my semester and I think it was most disliked class of the year. He was an average teacher, he wasn't always super clear with information and how he was grading though which was frustrating at times. The tests were all based off the textbook and we never had lectures so you have to read everything on your own.
This class was unnecessarily challenging. This was the most frustrating class because the exams were insanely specific and Dr. Ball doesn't grade anything. Every presentation was peer graded, even though they had no credibility or background in communication. We learned nothing during class, we worked on presentations. You teach yourself the class.
Please avoid at all costs. I took SCOM twice because the class, in general, is difficult but taking it a second time with Tim ball is even worse. Thankfully I knew the information but he's not good at explaining and grades very tough. If you want the best professor, choose Peeksmease, and disregard her ratings. Very opinionated grader.
Ball is okay. On Mondays you have a big lecture with him and on Wednesdays you have a small class with a GA. Ball posts his slides so I never go to Monday lecture but attendance is mandatory on Wednesdays. It all really depends on your GA because they grade all of your work(mine sucks). There are weekly chapter quizzes which are hard bc of wording.
A lot of people complained about this class, but I didnt mind it. On Wednesday we had large lecture with Ball, then on Friday we were in smaller classrooms with GAs. The smaller classrooms are where the 2 group presentations were done. Attendance is mandatory for the Friday session, but not really for lecture. You have weekly reading quizzes that
Lectures were pointless. Quizzes and tests are way harder than they need to be. Avoid taking him if you can. Biggest waste of my time
I took group presentations fall of 2019. It was a fairly easy class and Dr Ball was nice. His lectures were sometimes funny, but the large lecture is not necessary to go to. The recitation sections are what you need to go to, and the student teachers are very nice. Be sure to read and study, pick up the slack and do your work. You'll do fine.
Enjoyed taking his class but not sure what I really learned. Felt time in class could've been better used and more specific feedback would be good. Be ready to present multiple times. MAKE SURE you get a good group or your grade will reflect, and be nice to other groups because they grade your presentations (not him...)
Everything was graded by a grad student who "taught" us, attendance counted with the GA but not in lectures with Ball (lecture were pointless). I never studied nor opened the textbook and guessed on every online quiz (1/week) and online exam (2 total + final) and was fine. 2 group presentations, very unclear and no response to emails. Easy enough.
SCOM super easy with him. super specific about the presentation you have to make and only one lecture with him once a week and one class with a TA. attendance not mandatory for lectures and lectures quite frankly aren't important if you miss them, attend the first couple for basic information. weekly quizzes due 5 min before lecture, short and easy
2 online tests, 2 group presentations, MREST, SONA research, bunch of online quizzes. I went to lecture TWO times. Never used the book. Only thing you have to study for is the cumulative final. He puts a study guide up at the beginning so study that and what's on the MREST for the final and youre all set. Ball doesn't care about individual students
For group presentations, two classes a week: one lecture hall, one restoration class with a grad student. Attendance needed for restoration, not lecture. Reading and quizses, though easy. Use the quizzeswithoutconsquences link as practice if you have the "In the Company of Others" text!!!!!!!!!!! Only two presentations. Not bad, but not enjoyable.
Tim Ball is a solid choice for SCOM 123. The class itself isn't hard as long as you do your work. His lectures are engaging and entertaining.
Didn't pass MREST in time, dropped me 6 points. Format of all ch quizzes and tests is only 1 question at a time which is annoying and more time consuming. I wasnt a fan of his personality, very rude. However my TA was super nice and easy grading on the presentations. In class questions everyday, so you have to go.
He means well but don't take this class with Ball if you don't have to. Class is unbelievable boring and obvious, yet the group projects are graded super harshly with unclear feedback.
Tim is a nice person and has fairly simple lectures, but he is definitely a tough grader. His instructions are not always clear and it doesn't always makes sense why he takes off points for what he does. There aren't that many assignments, so tests and speeches account for most of your grade. His cat Tenacity is the true star of the class.
Dr. Ball is super unimpressed by everything, responds very shortly to emails, and grades pretty harshly. He does not give good feedback on the speeches and his tests are challenging considering he hardly teaches the material on them. His classes are not very engaging, but the breakout rooms were good. I would stay away if possible.
Professor Ball is a solid choice. He grades harsh on speeches (total of 2). Each week there was an easy WS that we would do in break out rooms. No quizzes. Tests weren't too bad, he posted a study guide for each exam including the final. Expected people to participate in class. Lectures were focused on powerpoints that were posted online.
Professor Ball was honestly extremely boring and he doesn't teach. We have weekly assignments that boost your grade, however, since you don't learn the material, everyone does poorly on the exams. He is SUCH a harsh grader on presentations, impossible to get an A. Not an easy GenEd class don't recommend.
Professor Ball is a good person and professor, but very lecture heavy and the material really doesn't prepare you for the exams.
Professor Ball is a very chill guy and his assignments are very easy. They're just interaction videos and online reading. For SCOM 123, he provides an online textbook which is helpful. The class is indeed boring, but easy. He responds quickly to emails and is overall polite.
When I tell you Dr. Ball is boring- you can't even imagine. He also breathes really close to his mic. The class is an easy A. The test is online and the weekly homework takes 20 mins max and is usually no more than 5 multiple choice questions on canvas. Take this class if you have a heavy workload and need an easy class.
Too easy, take this class. Attendance is optional I have not went in months, tests are online, multiple choice and he gives you days to take it. Weekly assignments are a few multiple choice questions that have unlimited retakes so you always get a 100. Take this class for SCOM
GROUP SCOM Tim Ball's lectures were okay, but most of the test were from the textbook. I would not recommend taking group scom because the grad assistant taught the smaller sections on Wednesday and mine was awful. Other than that, there were weekly powerpoint videos that were super helpful and only 4 exams.
Kinda boring lectures but he had fun co-teachers with him. He was nice and the class was easy. He recorded notes with questions embedded in them and then during class he would just talk about it. There is a textbook that he goes off of but I just went through his video notes and was totally fine.
I had Dr. Ball on T/TH from 9:35-10:50. His class is easy and interesting. His work load is fair with videos you often just have to take notes on and answer 2-5 questions. You can also take these multiple times so I never got less than a 100%. I highly recommend his class as he's chill and a great teacher. His lectures are easy to follow as well.
If you do not like group presentations DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I cannot specify this enough. I thought I'd like group presentations but I did not. It is very easy and you barely have to do anything. Exams are online. Typically split between Professor Ball and a TA. If you are okay with groups go for it, but if not don't assume you will like it.
Ball was an alright professor. His classes were kind of boring, but he had fun co-teachers with him which made it better. There are interactive videos every week (super easy), so I never got less than a 100%. Tests are online. I was in a bigger class, so we did not actually do group presentations but that is not how it will always be.
Professor Ball is a nice man but his classes were rough. He has a very monotone voice making it hard to pay attention. His tests were take home and very easy. Overall, it's an easy A but pretty unbearable classes.
The class itself was super easy the lectures however were really boring but that's kinda of expected. The class was mainly done online
Teaching style is inefficient and the main way to actually learn the course is through his recorded presentations online (not the in-person lectures).
I had the 400 people class, so attendance was never taken. Bro is mind-numbingly boring, like seriously. He is impossible to listen to and gives dumb work. I almost never showed up or did anything, and I passed with a B. There're like 3 tests and a final and a few assignments. Monkey class fr. I don't know if he has smaller classes now, though.
Such an easy class. Do not need to go to big lectures. Course is super easy. Just need to crack down for the final and you'll be fine.
Professor Ball's lectures are extremely boring. You don't have to go to still pass the class. The group speeches aren't bad but it also depends on your TA. All of the exams are online except the final which was extremely hard. Very few people did well on the final.
His lectures are extremely boring but attendance is not mandatory so I never went. The class itself is simple and if you have a good TA you'll be fine. Going to the small group class is the most useful and the only important part. The class itself is easy so taking him as a professor is fine.
I mean you don't really ever interact with him as the lectures are pretty much optional. You work with TA in individual classrooms and he is the lecturer. He assigns a lot of busy work and it is pretty boring. I can't bring myself to take notes on his video lectures. So boring. Overall not a bad choice.
Had Ball for my senior practicum and he is awesome. Very nice person, wants to see students do well, will engage you and ask you about your day. You can tell he enjoys working with students and is very relatable. His classes are always very clear and not hard at all. Solid pick and respectable professor!
Professor Ball 's SCOM 123 is not a hard class. You'll get an A if you apply yourself. Attendance to the big lecture isn't mandatory and isn't worth going. Class has 2 group projects worth a good amount of your grade, tests are online except the final which was pretty hard, but you can do bad on the final if you've done well on the presentations.
Professor Ball is nice, but his lectures are tedious. I only really learned things when I read the textbook, which made studying for the final difficult. This was one of the easiest scom courses I've heard about and I'm glad I took it, but I just didn't know anything for the final.
Professor Ball is a very kind and caring man. On the first paper I got a 72 and when I went to see him in office hours for feedback my grade on the next paper was a 96. I will say that 240 was a lot harder for me than 241 because of the number of quizzes/exams. If you work hard in class and take Tim Ball, you won't have to worry. Do extra credit :)
Fine choice for a Gen Ed, but the GAs are the ones who actually do all the work. Big lectures aren't mandatory, but gives extra credit during them sometimes. It's useful to take notes on the online lectures because they'll be locked later. Make sure you download the SCOM study guide on the JMU website and takes notes on the listed topics for final.
Yeah SCOM is easy literally don't stress.
I hated him as a professor. My TA was great, and they do most of the work, but he was just not for me. He talks incredibly slow and half of the assignments are just busy work. It's not a particularly difficult class so you don't need to pay attention during the lectures as he doesn't really talk about anything during them.
tim ball is the professor but it's the ta that does most of the work. the 2 speeches and the final are the main grades in this course. overall super easy course that yall should take.
Layout of this class was annoying, and TA's basically taught the whole class. Tim Ball's lectures are POINTLESS and boring and he didn't teach anything. The tests and quizzes were harder than they feel like they should be. Depends a lot on your group and TA but mine graded very strictly on speeches and group work. Did not like this class at all.
He was okay, very old school, and slow talker, and attendace was "mandatory" because he uses a qr code at the end of class. Pay attention is lectures because he will say some things that are on the final and beware of being on your phones, if he catches you, he will call you out in front of everyone in the lecture hall.
slow talker, lectures were boring and didn't feel interesting or useful. nothing to really complain about otherwise. good professor overall. attendance was "mandatory" but if you got the attendance qr code he put up at the end of class from a friend there's no way for him to tell. i spent more time with my graduate TA than i did with him.
Online class with your group on Mondays, the actual lecture on Wednesdays, and a class with your TA on Fridays. Boring lectures and talks super slow, you can get your group to send the QR code link if you don't feel like showing up. Pick your TA wisely, they do all the grading and can be extremely difficult. The presentations are in Friday's class.
Idk how he got that high of a rating, nobody I know likes him. The class is mostly ran by the grad student you get assigned to, and we only meet with Tim once a week. His lectures are so meaningless I skipped the entire final month. The only stuff that matters are the online activities/tests and the Friday classes with your grad teacher.
He sucks. Has to be the worst teacher for SCOM 123. Did not prepare us at all for the final. Had an A throughout the whole year, yet my average went down 10 points in the last 2 days of classes. He is the only teacher that does not put a curve on the final. The class is very easy but I wold not take him as your professor.
He was fine but boring. meeting with him once a week and a grad student once a week did not prepare us at all for the final. i ended with BARELY an A- but my grad student teacher was wonderful so it truly depends on which one you have for that. Victoria was great I would recommend her
Professor Ball's lectures can be boring, but the TAs make up for it. unstuck AI and the free textbook were super helpful for preparing for the challenging quizzes and speeches.
This class is easy but I don't reccommend There are a lot of homework assignments but they're straightforward—however, Dr. Ball doesn't prepare you at ALL for the final. His lectures only cover 1 or 2 things that are on the exam and they're mostly pointless. He's nice but I wouldn't take this class again if I had to.
His classes are really straightforward and easy. As long as you show up and do the assignment outlined you're fine. Dr Ball is approachable and honestly pretty chill. I recommend SCOM with him
Class depends on who your TA is! day 1 of class is online with your group the one is lecture with dr ball and the last is with your TA. The lecture you basically played games and did a little review. Since all SCOM has the same final this class won't prepare you but you're likely to have a high enough grade where the final does not matter.
2 of my group members were ill and unable to make the speech, and one had to go home for an emergency and he offered us little to no lenience on our project, Insisting that we present anyways no matter what the circumstances were. He is quite rude He will never hear you out if you have a problem or issue, just tell you there is nothing you can do.
Tbh I liked Dr Ball, classes set up like easy doc assignment mon online with a group of 5, wed entire class lecture, fri recitation with a TA and smaller class. 2 presentations in the year, lots of opportunity for extra credit. I messed up n forgot to turn in 5 assignments due in one day but other than that got good grades for everything else.
His lectures are off-topic activities, only went for the attendance form. It's run by TAs so make sure you choose a good one. You have group speeches which are 2 in total. Don't read off the notecard, just rant it'll save your points. Weekly assignments that are super easy, don't read the textbook use Studoc for final, the others aren't lockdown.
Your experience in this class all depends on your TA and speech group. His lectures were pointless, I maybe went to 8 of them. Just get someone in your class to send the QR code and you're good. I would definitely recommend Reese as a TA, she was very helpful in answering any questions. Overall, pick your speech group, speech topic, and TA wisely.
Very very boring professor. Always fell asleep in class.
Professor Ball is pretty boring during lecture but luckily we have the class period where TAs teach our class. I don't really hear from Ball. My TA was Paige and she was amazing! Take her if you can! We have lecture one day, TA lecture/smaller groups another day, and then online activities with our speech groups another day. Two speeches.
Tim Ball is a chill dude. His lecture just gets a little boring. You will have a TA and that's what you'll do most of your presentation work. Depending on your TA It'll be easier or harder cause they'll make it either jmu focused or just world-focused. Tests online take-home and videos with questions. There is a textbook, but it's online.
Ball was kind of boring but the class was very easy and you only see him one day a week. Wednesdays are with Grad assistants to work on speeches (paige was great choose her!). Only two speeches and some easy outside of class activities. Tests were online at home, easy A.
i literally could fall asleep in every class (speaks VERY slow), didn't mention about the final until the week before, doesn't prepare ANYONE for the final at all. in terms of the GAs, i recommend arielle, she's sweet and she's very chill!
Definitely dependent on your TA but either way everything you do is online. Tests, homeworks, video lectures, all online. You only have two presentations for the semester and they are not bad. This class was light and I would recommend.
You'll meet once a week with Prof. Ball, once with the TA, and once online with your speech group. TA Ologbo is great and grades easily. Not much work outside of short videos and weekly group sheets. Prof. Ball's lectures can be somewhat helpful if you attend, but very boring and monotone—just show up and you'll do fine
Professor Ball was a good choice for SCOM 123, you get paired up with TA's and mainly work with them. I would recommend Arie, but overall you have two presentations, three exams that are online, interactive videos, and IF activities. The final exam is in person and cumulative so be prepared for that. I would recommend him.
Class is ran mostly through your individual TA, but professor ball runs a lecture once a week and its mostly pointless. All of the classes though have required attendance. Main grades are through 2 big group presentations, some online exams throughout the semester, and a in-person final. Aim to get a good group and you will do fine.

Class depends on the TA that you get. If you're decent at working in groups, you'll do fine in his class.
dr ball is pretty solid, however, for a communications teacher he fails to engage people in his large lecture portions. its like he is allergic to talking with any zest or life, very monotone and boring. his TAs grade everything and basically carry the class. once a week there is busywork that you have to complete with your group online
easy but he sucks-take it w someone else-depends on TA & group(randomly assigned so pray u get lucky)online group meeting, lecture, & TA class all once a week, stupid busy work on lecture days that aren't even graded for points, mandatory attendance, he's weirdly strict & a harsh grader for such a simple gened, kinda rude NOT an understanding guy
He is okay, but you should take him if possible. Lectures can be boring, but are is easy enough to deal with. Three exams, 2-3 weekly assignments.
This is the best professor ever. He is so sweet and always tries to make the lectures fun and engaging. The lectures are super easy, and you don't have to take notes. The workload for this course is extremely light. He also genuinely cares about students and forming relationships with them. Definitely take this professor if you are doing SCOM 123.
Very easy class. If you don't like group work this isn't the class for you. But overall as long as you're prepared for your speech the class is really easy. All the exams are online except for the final. The professor is funny and a nice guy. As long as you go to class and memorize your speech you'll do good.
his lecture is just him yapping, class is HIGHLY dependent on your TA. I had a bad one and it was rough compared to other people I know in the class. group projects r fine its rly not that much work. professor doesn't do anything but your attendance is graded otherwise I would've faded lecture. the online part is a 2 min FaceTime call w ur group.
