Mr. Berg is a new prof this year for history 150. this class is extremmelly difficult and boring. whatever you do, avoid this class!!!!!!!!
I enjoyed this class, and learned a lot from it. It is challenging though. Professor Berg goes above and beyond in helping students though...

He is great! We have a lot of fun. His grading is very fair and he gives a lot of assignments instead of tests.
Real nice prof who's willing to help anyone who comes to him. Grades fair and wants the class to succeed.

I actually hated his class. He didn't seem interesting in helping students and the material on the tests never matched the study guide. He talked about random things too much other than the material. Find another teacher if you can!!!
good teacher, with i would have attended more to get alot out of the class.

I had him for art photography. I could tell he was uncomfortable teaching it, seeing as how he had no formal education in the field. We were short staffed on professors so he got the job. He knew his stuff and he did okay, I guess.
Not helpful, tests did not reflect what was on the study guides... a poor teacher. I studied very hard to get only a B... Try another teacher if you can!
One of the best proffs I've had here...very good guy.
First time teaching honors, kind of tried to make it harder since he thought that's what honors should be. Came off as having a completely unreasonable grading scale, but his grading was relatively fair (but still tought). Interesting guy, cancelled class like 3 times so it gave us a nice break.
Nice guy and very helpful. The class was really interesting but it was too easy for me! I was not challenged at all.
This class is worthless the way he teaches it. Take this class with Prof. Guy instead.
Pushed a very Liberal agenda!!
Overall a very good prof, IF you like the subject. LOTS of reading in very difficult books, but the content isn't very difficult. Fair grading. Tells you what's on the test before you take it -- very helpful, considering the class is so broad. Berg is a really nice guy, LOVES Bob Dylan... just do the study guides and talk in class, and he's great.
He is easy but the class is kind of boring
I loved the perspective Dr. Berg gave the class. I will never watch the news with naive eyes again.
The class is difficult so make sure you stay on top of the readings. If you are ignorant to world events like I am, the class will be difficult to you. You deal with a lot of big issues and what they mean in different contexts. Dr. Berg is a very down to earth guy and is very approachable if you need help or want to talk about personal issues.
He makes you use the "Method" to write papers, which a ridiculous waste of time and requires more work than it should. Also you have to agree with his points of view or he tears down your comments. THe class is based on participation so you have to go.
I took his photography colloq in the summer. He's a fantastic teacher and very enthusiastic about the subject. We didn't go into details about how to take photographs or develop them, but rather looked at why it is done in certain ways and other interesting ways to approach the subject (no background info needed). I definitely recommend this class!
He is really easy going but expects you to do your work. The class is very discussion based with some papers and a presentation.
Great teacher! He makes his class seem difficult, but it's really not. Lots of reading and a few detailed papers, but not bad.
If he requires you write papers using "The Method" run away. Far away. This professor assigns rather large readings, which mean if you are taking other Honors/hard classes, it will be VERY difficult to stay on top of all readings. The class is discussion based, and participation is semi-required for a good grade. Would not recommend this prof.
Took photograph colloq with him. If you like photographs (and the processes thereof) but DON'T like discussing them, don't take this class. Much more a philosophy of photography class than an appreciation of photography class.
I had Dr. Berg for three classes, and would take him again if I could! He does teach complex material, but he gets you to really THINK. He's super nice and helpful, and lots of fun when you get to know him. I even asked him to be my thesis adviser because out of all my classes, I learned the most from his. He's fair and wants you to succeed.
Unclear what he wants from assignments. Doesn't allow room for progress.
He was very unclear in his assignments and expected far too much from his students, we have more than his class. His grading scale is based on if he likes you or not, participation is mandatory. "The Method' is the biggest waste of time tool for writing I have ever used, you basically make things up. I would recommend avoiding Berg!
I had Berg for Honors Humanities 189, 201, 202, and 203. Dr. Berg isn't an easy teacher and sometimes can be unclear about what he wants. Still, he's VERY willing to meet with students and genuinely wants you to succeed. Class and grade are very discussion based, so speak up.
I found him very interesting and helpful while working on my thesis. You had to work hard, but he was easy to follow.
Well, if you're into politics, this is your class. Especially if you're a liberal (You'll love it). I thought the class was very boring and fell asleep constantly. Not a huge workload though.
Makes his entire class discussion based, making it very much like a book club. The readings were sometimes difficult tounderstand but he cleared things up pretty well. The Method allows the student to write about whatever they want, but make sure you include facts from readings and sources to back up claims or he will get you for it. Enjoyable clas
Very laidback class although be ready for lots of reading. You can get away without it but its helpful. Books are long and boring. We only had 2 assignments, huge papers. One was 6 pages the other 15. He lets you revise the 15. Its all discussion. He also wears weird sandals some days. I recommend him regardless.
Great, eye opening class. Every class is socratic seminar basically. There are only 3 grades a 6 page paper (30%) a 12 (40%) and participation (30%) so I would attend class. But if you do poorly on a paper you can revise it!
He is an okay teacher. You can get away with not reading any of the material, but still buy the books to use for papers. He has his own Method of writing papers that is somewhat confusing. Liberal teacher.
I love Dr Berg! He is a super nice guy. His classes are very discussion based with lots of reading, but you can honestly get away with not reading the material as long as you still try and participate in class. His new teaching style involves one huge project at the end of the semester that counts for your entire grade, but he is very fair about it.
I LOVE Dr. Berg. He is so laid-back and just likes to talk about the reading material. He makes sure you really understand the concepts. This is the first year the entire grade for his class is based on a creative project, which is both exciting and terrifying, but he helps a lot with development of ideas. I would highly recommend him. :)
Don't get me wrong, Berg is a good teacher. He is passionate and expects a lot out of his students. However, he is highly opinionated, and although he says that he is understanding of other opinions, if you don't agree with him, you will have a hard time getting good grades in his class. The more work you put in your papers, the worse you will do.
Very intensive and kinda vague class. If you want structure and get worried by only have one grade, do not tack.
Berg is a tough, tough, tough prof. His readings are completely mandatory and his classes are discussion based often with group activities. His class, for 2 semesters in a row, has been my toughest class by far. As an honors course, the material is already higher level but he really expects you to know your stuff. That being said, he's a great guy!
He changes his curriculum all the time and the material is usually hard to understand. He requires a lot of reading and comprehension and grades harshly. I recommend a different teacher if possible.
Dr. Berg grades very hard and requires you to do a lot of hard readings. The quizzes were open note but were the hardest part of the class.
If you share his views he loves you if you dont well good luck getting an A. He is very tough but he knows his stuff.
Berg likes to change his class structure every semester, so it's hard to predict what he'll do next. 202 this semester was really hard - the quizzes were murderous even if you did the reading. The method papers were a bit challenging as well. Still, Berg is a good teacher who likes discussion. He knows his stuff.
Berg knows want he wants for his assignments but doesn't always make it clear to his students. If you don't read, or don't write in your journal (which he grades), it'll be hard for you to keep up in discussion or write quality papers. He'll give help if you ask for it, but it's not always the most clear.
Yes you will work, and learn(..k?) from seemingly esoteric texts that you break down, line by line in class, til it becomes the plain-English thoughts of the world's most respected minds. If you put the time in, you'll leave the semester able to track and digest influential texts and to follow the progression of "big ideas" from prehistory to now.
Professor Berg is great. I was at risk for getting kicked from the honors college, and he told me he'd vouch for me. He said he knew I belonged there . He isn't confusing; the content is. Prompts over the reading are given daily. All assignments are pass/fail. It's an amazing class that makes you think deeply. All assigned readings are short books.
Berg's classes are laid back and are actually fun. We contemplate life through old works of literature. He did a new thing this year where he grades homework, quizzes, and projects as either pass or fail, this is used to allow the student to expand their thinking. I really liked his class. There is no textbook, but he uses books and we do readthose
I was in the class when he graded based off of a pass/fail specification system, so goals for assignments were very clear. Berg was as excited to teach this course ass I was to learn it. There's very short homework assignments for every class to help you prepare for lecture. My favorite class this semester because of both subject matter and Berg.
I would avoid Dr. Berg at all costs. He was extremely unclear in his assignments and expectations and as a result, it was impossible to succeed. He is very opinionated and if you lean conservative- you will not get along. He gave me a semester grade of 89.6% and I can guarantee is was because my opinions were different than his.
Great Prof.
If you go to class and speak once each class you will likely get an A.
He is very interesting and has a lot of cool ideas. He is not like super hot, but is dad hot if you know what I mean
Great prof, very caring. There's a lot of reading but he sets the class up via the Socratic method- you're learning from him and all your classmates. Best prof in the Honors college!
I have had an adventure of a time in Dr. Berg's class. Every day I leave class feeling like I have learned something new. Sometimes the concepts hurt your brain but Dr. Berg does not disapprove of students expressing their confusions. His class was thought provoking and fun; it turned around the Honors College for me.
Dr. Berg is an amazing honors professor that truly cares about the subject he teaches. His classroom style is heavily discussion-based, and he expects participation. The main topic of the class is eastern philosophy/ways of thinking. There are 3 short papers (600-700 words)along with weekly discussion notes over what you have read & discussed.
Class was based on reading and in class discussions. Assignments were typing up weekly notes as well as a few essays and an experiential project. Berg is very nice, and the class is an easy A.
Dr. Berg is fantastic! His HONR 189 class is something I look forward to every day. I highly recommend him to anyone who is interested in learning about other cultures and wants to think on a deeper level. His class is even better when you actively participate and care.
I loved HONR 189 with Dr. Berg. I think it's my favourite honors class I've taken. The class is set up around engaging with and relating to ideas from Eastern philosophy in a very personal way. It was a good academic class, but an even better self-exploration class. Not a lot of reading, but the reading you do do is well worth it. Loved his grading
Respected and nice professor. I would highly recommend if you're looking for a MEANINGFUL class rather than trying to get it over with. Berg has a strange grading style, but all you need to really need to know is that it's a 1 for satisfactory or 0 for you didn't try hard enough. Overall, a professor that really cares about your LEARNING.
This 390 was his Photography colloq. 3 absences for the class, so be diligent in attending. Participation matters. Couple of hefty projects/papers, LOTS of reading, but incredibly smart guy.
If you are looking for a professor who truly cares about his students and actually makes you want to improve as both a student and a person, take Berg! His class inspired me, and I've learned so much. This class has positively impacted me and I would recommend him to anyone! Be prepared to think about life and contribute ideas to class discussion.
Lots of reading and class discussion, graded participation. Makes discussions interesting and doesn't assign busywork. Need to show up and pay attention to do well.
Dr. Berg is a great professor. He is very kind and an easy grader. The discussions we have in class are thought provoking and eye opening.
Dr. Berg is amazing. Sign up for that class with him right now. He cares so much about his students. His course themes are "How to live a good life," and that is what he genuinely wants for his students. He is a strange man, but in an endearing, roll your eyes at dad jokes type of way. His grading system is unusual but makes good sense.
Berg is a very relaxed and nice professor. He makes a conscious effort to relate with his students and listen to their feedback. He is easy to get along with and lays out very clear grading criteria.
Dr. Berg is a great professor - I would recommend him for all first year students and anyone else in the Honor's college. He challenges your thinking, no matter what discipline you come from. He's funny and likes his class to be built on discussion, so be ready to participate! He gives good feedback on the reflections you have to write.
Dr. Berg's classes are very discussion based and thought evoking. He will challenge you to think outside of the box and from a different point of view several different times. He will give you feedback on your homework. I recommend Dr. Berg for first years because of how understanding and open he is.
Berg is such an amazing teacher. Truly so passionate about the topics that he teaches and about teaching in general. He really listens to student feedback and will adjust the course based on what he hears. The content can be difficult to understand, but the work itself isn't unmanageable. I'll be thinking about this class for years to come!
An absolutely amazing professor who genuinely cares about his students. Something he does that I really enjoy is that he leaves personal comments on each assignment you turn in on canvas, showing that he respects the time and work you put into each one. Listens to and adjusts the course based on feedback from students. Definitely recommend!!
Berg my beloved.
Overall Loved this professor! He is an inspiration inside and outside the classroom.
Berg is awesome!! Had him for two semester's, and he genuinely cares about his students a lot. He is fun, easy going and well educated. As a Latina, his discussion based environment felt welcoming and his classes/readings/discussions helped me better transition into adulthood.
One of my favorite professors who cares a lot about his students. This class was more of an experiment and we had journals (with journal checks 3 times throughout the semester). No exams and little homework/reading. We donated money to an organization and had one project outside of the class. Very good professor, interesting topics and easy class!
The class was structured as an experiment in which the students were given more control, while still receiving adequate support. This approach encouraged active participation and prevented the class from becoming a passive experience. Overall, Dr. Berg was very pleasant and effective in communicating his ideas.
This course did not match course description. This class was supposed to be about how others view America. It turned into a complaining fest of privileged people that were not appreciative of their freedoms. It felt pointless to participate in projects as they had little to no output. Be prepared to talk about socially engaged art.
Contemp. American Civilization has been one of the best classes that I have ever taken. Berg is an incredible prof. who genuinely cares about his students, our thoughts, and what we get out of the class. Very fun and engaging class that makes you think about the world around you in a deeper way. Love the focus on art.
Participation and attendance is so important in this class. If you immerse yourself in the class discussions, you will get a lot out of them.
Tim was AMAZING I loved the way he ran his class. If you are looking for in-depth perspective changing lectures you will find it here. Grade is based off participation in class, and a journal you keep about your experiences with the class. An amazing honors prof changed my life fr
Dr. Berg is by far my favorite professor I've had in the Honors College. He is incredibly passionate about his work and it shows through in each lecture. He also cares about his students as people and will plan mental health days during stressful times in the semester. Can't recommend his classes enough!
If you are not someone who likes talking in class, like I am, I would not recommend it. He makes you grade yourself, and you have a commonplace book, essentially a journal for the whole semester and that's all you do for the semester for all the readings.
My guy tim is quite the character. You can tell he cares about his students and wants them to succeed. I talked a decent amount in his class this year but sometimes its a little bit draining to keep going back to the commonplace book without clear outlined prompts to fully think about. Good guy. Funny. But you better go to class!
