Very nice but class is way too difficult than it needs to be. Gives out extrea credit and easy papers but tests are extremly hard and straight from the book. Never lectures about anything on the book or test either. Test is way too specific on questions, youll be good if you memorize the book.
I am taking him over the summer. He does seem to waste a lot of time harping on subjects that are not necessarily important for tests. However, he reads the tests out loud to the class the day before. This has been really helpful. He also offers a lot of extra credit. I would definitely recommend him over Sadat at the Anderson campus.
Very helpful. Would always return emails and was willing to meet you at his office.
Not a good teacher to have if you rely on the textbook to learn because he thinks his lectures are better. Makes things more difficult than they need to be.
Wonderful, intelligent and insightful man. He loves Sociology and encourages you to think. His lectures are useful but the test is straight from the textbook. Use the chapter outlines and use the practice tests in the back - they help a ton! STUDY and you'll be fine. Drops lowest test grade. Gives you anything you need, visit his office!
LOVE THIS GUY! He's an amazing teacher. His tests are straight from the power points and book, but I love his lectures. He always ties his opinion in with the material, which is interesting. He's really into this class more so SOC 101. He has a great sense of humor!
Plain and simple, take him for SOC 101. I took him last semester, and I got an A without any problems. I don't know if he still does this but he will give you the TEST to take notes/pictures if you come to his OFFICE! But even if he doesn't do that anymore, his tests literally come straight from the book. Nice guy and a great teacher overall!
Soft spoken, and difficult to hear. Was teaching from a book that he told the class that had not even written yet. Arrogant, talked down to students and wasn’t interested in others opinions.
More difficult than it needs to be. Gives out extrea credit and easy papers but tests are extremly hard and straight from the book. Never lectures about anything on the book or test either.
Semi easy class. Make sure to read book. that's the only way to pass class.
He's a nice guy overall, but he does technically talk very swiftly along with sometimes having sloppy handwriting on the board. I tend to take notes on everything he speaks out because every word he says I fear is on the test. Every last word.
He's a great teacher, he just rambles on and on for lectures. He almost always reads the questions from the test the class before so that you are able to get a good idea of what will be on it. He's funny and even laughs at his own jokes. Great teacher... to me at least!
Bertoni is a really awesome guy, his hand writing is awful and he talks fast, but he is ALWAYS willing to help in his office hours and he reads the questions of the test the class before the test is held. His tests come from the book mostly, but his lectures are very interesting. I had a really good time in his class, and he is very helpful.
If you pay attention in class and read all of the assigned readings you will be fine. The tests come from the readings and are based more on concept than regurgitation. The papers are easy as long as you follow his rubrics. An interesting class if you want it to be, get to know the guy and it will help you out, he's a cool dude.
Never emails anyone back or if he does he is rude, tells you to visit his office hours but is rude. He is very unclear and makes everything harder than it has to be. Do not take this if you want an easy A. He changes the test format every semester; for example everyone else had multiple choice but this semester the tests were entirely short answer.
Assigns a lot of reading that are LONG. Gives out exact questions for the test but won't give you the answers and it's hard to find. His grading is so inconsistent between students. He admits to not reading papers and test answers thoroughly.. He just skims. All test are short answer. He offers a lot of EC. You have to really WORK for your grade.
Bertoni is a pretty funny guy, really smart and has a lot of theories about the government. He helped when you asked, but really didn't like to reply to emails, office hours would be more efficient with him. 710 would take again.
He's a good professor, but you have to work for an A. If you do your work and go to him for help you will not have any problems. This class is not an easy A, but it is a great class.
Horrible. The method of teaching used is very unclear. It's very hard to comprehend points that he tries convey. Beware of the tests they are literally the worst. All short answer and he grades tough. Unless you are prepared to devote EVERY second of free time you have to this class to even pass, do NOT take his class.
Genuinely a nice guy, but his class is far from easy. The lectures are not very clear, and it is very difficult to do well on tests. The key to passing is definitely essays. If you do well on essays and turn in every extra credit assignment you will most likely pass.
I found his lectures can be very interesting at times but other times just very repetitive. Make sure you attend class and take really good notes. He is very helpful. He post the test questions online, so there really isn't a reason you should fail if you do your part.
Mr. Bertoni is tough only because he really makes you think in ways you likely haven't thought before. He is helpful and will answer any questions you may have. He is a very laid back man and he does really care about his students and his job. He is a good teacher just make sure to take notes and READ.
Terrible. This professor has one of the worst teaching styles I have experienced through all 3 years of school. His lectures are unclear and jumbled together. Do not recommend taking this course. No notes/powerpoints provided, no textbook, no handouts. Strictly listening lecture.
So hard. He lectures the whole time and is very difficult to follow. He writes notes on the board but apperantly can't write English bc everyone has to ask him multiple times what things say. He's horrible with blackboard. You don't know any of your grades unless you go to his office. (Office hours are impossible btw) Two essays, 3tests, & 1 final
Do the study guides, memorize answers to SG, do not read all the readings (just to answer ?ions), pay attention in class, ASK QUESTIONS DURING LECTURE, GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Go to his office hours and ask questions about the study guide. He will tell you if he is going to ask that question or not. He is willing to help you if you ask/work for it.
Make sure to study the terms and questions and be able to go into detail and you'll be fine! Listen to things said in class it gets interesting!
Worst teacher ever. Only gave 5 grades the entire semester. His lectures are unclear and so is his handwriting. Never puts grades in so you don't know what it is unless you go to his office. Recommend never taking this class except for online.
Mitchell Mulvaney, This is my second time taking this class. I really do enjoy this class as the lectures are fun and the class is very involved. Great teacher just hard to pass the tests.
Get ready to read and listen, must pay attention and ask questions. Expected to make ties with thoughts and understand the concept
Contrary to some of the other reviews, I really enjoyed Bertoni's lecture style. His class is by no means easy, but as long as you find sociology interesting you won't have a problem with it. He is a very personable character, and obviously deeply cares about sociology. My only complaint would be that he is disorganized with grading.
Great teacher honestly. Just tough when there's such few things that are graded. I would definitely take again but try harder. You can tell that he really cares about sociology and go to his office hours for clarification if you need it. He's always willing to help.
Prof. B. posts all of the exam questions in blackboard in the beginning of the semester. However, you MUST study for each one because you don't know which questions he'll ask. However, he is always willing to meet during his office hours to answer any questions, and explain things from the lecture in great detail. Lastly, a great devil's advocate.
You have to go to class and you need to meet with him outside of class if you want to do well. Make sure he knows your name. He gives you every question that will be on the test, but that doesn't mean you can slack off. Definitely take detailed lecture notes. An A is possible but you have to work for it.
Bertoni gives GREAT lectures, pay attention during lectures and take notes during them, organize Review Questions/Terms for use on studying for Tests. Draw on examples used in class during the exam questions since the tests are all short answer. Hit main points, give detail and take your time on tests. Follow rubric on essays are you're set.
This class is tough. Though he gives you the questions for the test, a single missing phrase in your answer can make it wrong. Don't bother buying the textbook. Do the readings because he questions you on it in class. Honestly get to know him, if he knows your name he's more likely to give you a good grade. Good luck, you'll need it.
Professor Bertoni is a nice guy, but his class is tough. Make sure you take notes exactly how he writes them. Go to his office hours at any time, and he gives you the exact answers he looks for on the tests.
He is a caring professor. If you try your best you will succeed in this course. Lots of reading. Would take again.
There's some hard concepts to grasp but he does a great job explaining them. He's very passionate about his lectures which is refreshing and makes it fun to follow. Pay attention and contribute to discussion and you'll succeed. Be ready for some thought provoking discussions!
Only a few assignments total but participation is a huge part of final grade. The largest part of participation is attending class. His test are free response and you have to be extremely detailed or will get lots of points taken off.
He was an amazing professor! He really cares about students who vist him during office hours and he likes to get to know you so he can understand his students background. His class is challenging but it was honestly the first class that made me think critically. I would definitely take him again.
He really cares about students and tries to get them to think for themselves. More of a philosophy aspect with the class than what you think of as of a sociology class. Makes you question what the purpose of life is, why we are here, why do you think the way you do ect. Being engaged in class and going to office hours really helps.
Cool dude, very interesting class.
Hes a nice guy but he grades very tough. Make sure you listen very well and take notes. Also read the assigned readings!
THE WORST teacher I have ever had. No clear grading criteria, tons of reading from low-quality pictures that he scans into the system instead of assigning reading in the book or actually teaching anything. If you take him in class he may be better, but online DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Professor Bertoni is a great professor. Not easy, but great. You have to really put in the work if you want to get a good grade, but let's be honest, you should be putting in the work regardless of the class. His class really makes you think critically and it makes you question why you believe what you do, which is definitely a good thing!
Bertoni was my favorite prof. this semester. His lectures are well-prepared and very interesting. When lecturing, he takes on the persona of the ideology in order to teach it, and this throws some students off. He really cares about what he's teaching and about the students learning it. He's always willing to talk - very accessible. Do the reading!
Great person, terrible professor. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Always take written tests. He gives you the questions to the exam beforehand, go to him and ask him how your answers look, he will give feedback.
Don't waste your money on the textbook bc you wont need it. Not everyone will like Bertoni but he was one of my favorite prof! His lectures were confusing at times but very interesting. His tests are difficult but as long as you pay attention & study you'll be fine. Hes very nice & laid back! Go to his office hours, study, & be present in class
Definitely do not underestimate this class! The tests can seem very vague, but as long as you are active and pay attention in class, they will be easy to understand. Make sure you are there for lecture because missing one lecture can make a big difference on a test. Also, go to office hours, they are so helpfu and he will recognize your effort!
His lectures dont make any sense and neither do the test questions.
Interesting lectures and very approachable. However, his policy about teaching is contradictory. He offers no PowerPoints or study guides on the basis of encouraging critical thinking instead of memorization. Yet his tests reflect the exact opposite - multiple choice questions that require rote memorization to do well on. Hope you like reading.
This class was difficult and time-consuming but overall worth it. There are no notes, so you have to be in class and take notes of your own. Tests are difficult and you must truly understand underlying concepts of the material. Office hours helped me a lot. This class is a good way to challenge yourself and your ways of thinking.
absolutely awful. Class was only hard because he does not explain things or answer questions. Showed up late to class every single day also.
This class forces you to think independently and use critical thinking on tests. AMAZING lecture, lectures are thought-out and taught with enthusiasm. Just memorizing info will not allow you to make an A, thought connections must be made. Tests prove your connections. Great at answering questions and available to help when struggling w/ connections
Mr. Bertoni is an excellent teacher who is very well versed in his subject. You can tell he has a deep passion for Sociology and learning. That being said, this is not a class where you will just regurgitate whats in the lectures or book. You will be expected to think critically for yourself. Not all students do well with this.
He scheduled dues dates on BB maintenance days so you have to turn your work in early. Takes FOREVER to grade your work. Treated a 100 level class as a 400 level class. Tests are short answers. More focused on philosophy rather than sociology. Handwriting is illegible.
He was the absolute best teacher I have ever head at Tri-County tech. One of the ONLY ones to respond in a timely manner to emails/questions/concerns. This course does require you to think outside of the box but as long as you try and read the material he gives you, you will certainly pass this class!!!
Probably the worst class I have taken
Bertoni's low ratings come from students who are unwilling to put forth the effort for a grade. I have never worked harder for an A but he was so helpful because he saw I genuinely cared about learning. He is a lover of knowledge so he pushes you to learn in different ways that you never have before
He was always at least 10 minutes late to class. One time he did not even show up and my class was waiting outside the room for him only to realize he was at home. The only thing he does is lecture and make the students answer the same five questions every week. I would never ever recommend this professor to anyone and if you get him switch out!!!
I would not recommend taking this class. The lectures and readings are completely unrelated. Tests come from the readings mostly - if you're not big on reading don't take the class. The stuff we read in here was harder to understand than anything I've ever read in a Literature class. Not at all what I expected when I chose to take sociology.
Bertoni talked for the whole hour every class and nothing had value or stuck in my mind. He definitely pushed his views onto you and spoke about his view of the Bible relating to sociology. There was not much sociology talked about besides the thoughts of famous. sociologist over the course of history. If you don't like reading or reflecting, run.
DO NOT even think about mentioning anything related to being conservative because he will make sure you fail. If you get him, switch... Handwriting is unreadable lectures aren't good and test material is rarely covered
Such a great professor!! If you see any bad rates it is from those who did not put forth the effort and try. He values hard work. He truly cares for his students and is willing to help you out as much as he can, only if you care. I wish all professors were as thoughtful as him. If you have the chance I highly suggest him!
You have a cogitation (6 or so questions) due every week. He doesnt really tell you what or how he is grading. The first test is really difficult, but the test become easier after that. Read, watch the lectures, study, do cogitation and you should be okay. A challenging class, but not impossible.
Lot of important reading. There are three big exams in the class along with weekly assignments. Do the assignments and extra credit. The exams are difficult and confusing. Make sure you read your stuff and pay attention/take notes in class. He'll tell you to get the textbook so you can read the whole thing, I didn't and I was fine. Def would help.
Make sure you read the additional material he posts because he often pulls test questions from the other readings and videos. He gives you a textbook but it's more supplemental than required. Go to his office hours when you have questions, don't just email him. There are only 3 tests, including the final, and he'll review your past tests in office.
Pay attention in class, you cant afford to skip any classes, and pay special close attention when do cognitions. Cognitions are very important if you want to pass. Overall lectures are very meaningful but challenging and get ready to think.
Professor Bertoni is so great! His lectures are organized and super informational. There is a lot of reading for this class, but don't let that scare you. All of the readings are super interesting. If you actually care about school and enjoy learning you will LOVE this class!!!
Will mark you absent even if you have a medical excuse from a surgeon
Wonderful teacher. Cares about the class subject and his students. Lays out all materials for student to understand. Talks entire class. Have to think outside the box. Allows written study sheet for exams. Exams are difficult in that more than 1 answer could be correct.
Professor Bertoni's class was not a walk in the park, but instead requires an active participation with readings and keeping current with posted articles. Don't shy away from taking his class if you don't mind a little hard work.
I had him online and he kind of ruined the class. I liked what I was learning about I just did not like how complicated he made simple things and how he does not leave feedback on anything you turn in and just continues to take points off for no reason. It just seems like he grades based on opinion, and just way too much work assigned weekly.
Mr. Bertoni is an excellent lecturer! He gives essay style exams. Each exam consisted of only a few questions and each one required essay responses. Therefore, it is important to attend the lectures. I highly recommend visiting him during his office hours. He offers extra credit if you can explain the correct answer to anything you missed.
He shows a lot of passion for what he teaches and will often incorporate his own life experiences in his teachings. He doesn't lecture from the textbook very often so showing up to class will help on the test. Get ready for discussions about tough topics and personal experiences. He shows interest and compassion for all of his students.
Really good professor! Always there to help. He really loves the topic and is passionate about it. The lectures are important to listen to get the most out of the class. Tests are fair and on topic. Pleasure to be in his class.
Bertoni is passionate about what he does. He is particular about grading writing and I highly suggest going to his office hours to clarify what he is looking for. Participate in class and be prepared to read bad handwriting. 10/10 would take this class again. ASK QUESTIONS IN PERSON.
He is a very slow grader and does not provide any feedback. He grades based on his opinion he also does not provide any rubrics or criteria for assignments.
This professor does not do well with online courses. His grammar is hard to understand, so some assignments were unclear. I've messaged him a few times to get clarification, and he never responded. He takes a very long time to grade assignments. Overall, you can tell he doesn't give his online courses much care or attention.
Horrible grader and assignment directions are not clear. He grades based on his opinion and makes it known.
Mr. Bertoni is obviously passionate about his job and sociology. However, his lectures were unorganized and confusing. Our homework was based off a book that was never brought up in class. Like others have said his grading is based on opinion. It just felt so chaotic and maybe that was the goal all along?
Really inappropriate conversations considering he is a professor. Handwriting in unreadable. Do not recommend especially if you are religious in any way or have a different political view than him. Everything is online although it is an in person class.
Handwriting sucks. His lectures are not getting across clearly. Some days I know what he's talking about; most of the time i don't. We take notes on the same things every day. just study for the test and what I study wouldn't be on there and then his homework is on a website. He reads his own textbooks, so we don't know what he's really getting at.
So much work! He leaves absolutely no feedback. His lectures lost track very quickly. The exams are hard but definitely doable. I will not be taking another class with him. Read the book! His lectures are hard to follow, but take good notes and study the book. Ask for clarification if you are lost. He does clear things up if you ask.
With all honesty his test are DIFFICULT but not impossible. He is good for people who are visual and auditory learners, but his handwriting is definitely hard to read sometimes- not ugly just scribbles at times. Makes you feel like a person especially when he shares a little personal background. Good professor and I would take his class again.
I really enjoyed this class, he lectures without using slideshows and doesn't write much on the board so you don't have much time to write stuff down. But he lectures were in depth and he answers questions well The teacher is a democrat and atheist(?) and is open about it and I think that's why he gets bad reviews.
I had an online class with this professor. I felt as though he ignored our class. It was an easy class as he would give me 100s on every writing assignment. I received no feedback on any assignment and most of the time was handed As. The reading was very time consuming and took an entire day for two chapters. Great class if you want an easy A.
Fascinating as a spectacle. He really reminds me of Ein from Alvin and the Chipmunks, but he does care about spreading the information that he believes is necessary. There is a lot of reading material and a textbook. It will take a lot of time to get through, very intensive.
He is super friendly and does a ton of talking and explains things really well — and his exam can be a little difficult.
