Great teacher but does not seem to have much of a repore w/ his students
No Comments
He is very clear when he lectures. He doesn't believe in testing his students, But on the other hand there is homework every night. His class is easy though.
The best teacher I ever had. Try to take the class he team-teaches with Professor Twicken (HIST22 and PS1).
HE IS A GOOD TEACHER, THE CLASS IS GOOD ONLY IF YOU ALWAYS ATTEND AND COMPLETE THE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT EVERY NIGHT. IF YOU HAVE TIME TO DO THESE 2 THINGS, YOU WILL GET AN EASY A. YOU WILL ALSO LEARN A LOT IF YOU DECIDE TO LISTEN AND NOT JUST SIT THERE.
This teacher is quite literally a genius. He teaches an enlightened view of American history and everything he says should be viewed with awe.
Awesome! His lectures keep you interested. He also lets you make up work, and there no exams!
Liberal Democrat who likes to agrgue with students about current issues. No mid-term or final exam. Two book reports;two pages each.Homework is given after every lecture;which requires you to writ a full page to answer two questions. Easy grader, nice guy.
I do give credit to braatz for having an opinion, thatsmore than I can say for most. But,all his course does is jam his opinion down your throat. He acts as f he has some super x ray vision into the minds of political figures, past and present. It gets old.
bleeding heart liberal. If u do the daily assignments and just show up to class u will get an A. no tests.
Funny guy, keeps your attention. Objective view of the government. He gives you a history from a different perspective. Very eye opening
Made learning history extremely fun! If you do the assignments (daily essay's)you'll do well. Never gives a test. It's all participation and attendance
mr braatz is the coolest. no test. only homework. grade is based on daily homework and final. very helpful, funny teacher. makes you take a new look back at history. A+
no tests at all! do homework and easy "a". always forgets to take attendance. very democratic way of teaching history(if your into that) Turn in a page of homework at every class. very very opiniated!!!!!!!!!!
he's such an awsome teacher.
i did not like him for the fact that he thinks he knows every damn thing about history. Not my favortie teacher although he does not give tests but in return, homework EVERY NIGHT. Did not enjoy him at all.
When I say he's very hard, I don't mean his teaching. He's a very stimulating teacher. I learned so much about history, and about myself. I learned the most during his office hours. Me gusta mucho el maestro. Es un puto.
Prof. Braatz is a super EGOMANIAC...but this guy does makes you think, although half the time you leave class depressed because all he talks about is how much the world and it's leaders suck. No tests, but the homework every class gets old.
he makes your grade up in his head. do all the homework, go to class everyday.. you might be worth of a C from him. good luck with that ****.
freaking funny and you actually learn
He is a whack job. You can do all the work and still fail his class. He needs to get a clue! All he does is complain. He needs to move to a third world country and see how good he has it here and then shut his trap!
He is easy but really rude. I think he gives good lectures, but there were times i wanted to walk out of the classroom actually many of us wanted to because he was acting like such a jerk.It would be better if he didn't put his students down all the time.
Skinny ass ****. Thinks he is to cool for school and loves to give busy work then he barely even looks over it so most people just BS.
HE WILL GIVE YOU A GOOD GRADE IF HE THINKS YOU ARE A LIBRIAL LIKE HIM. TOTAL A*****E
Everyone that complains about Braatz is effin lame. He's a cool guy..you do NOT need to be liberal to get a good grade. Just do the homework and the 2 reports and you get an A. He doesnt even give a final!!!
Braatz's peace studies class has so much potential, but he depends on the students to teach the class. And it doesen't work well because usually only a few students are really capable of doing that. He needs to organized the class more and be more positive
interesting and you dont have to agree with him to get an A. one of the best classes i took
The best teacher I've ever had.. assignments every nite, but they really teach you b/c the book is amazing... take this class because it will open your eyes up as long as you let him... do all the nightly assignments and youll get an A
Not only could I not put Zinn down, the questions given in class were easy to write because the book was easy to read. It was a very educational class and the professor was down to earth and a very good teacher.

Love this teacher! Awsome guy. If you want to learn about the truth in U.S. history, he's the man to talk to. Great class. You'll love it. Daily reading assignments, but hang in there, the reading's awsome. You'll enjoy the class.
Very informative, thought provoking teacher. Learned an immense amount. He mainly wants you how to think for yourself. Lots of homework, but it is easy to do if you keep up on the reading material. I'd take his class again if I could.
nice guy, easy class, don't have to memorize anything, just write brief essays,he'll give u good grades, even if he doesn't u can turn it back in & get a better grade, don't u love him already?I forgot, he's gonna tell u what's in final
alot of personality. TON of reading involved in this class, but surprisingly it was actually interesting& relatively easy to read- and im not a huge history fan. he does sorta seem to preach his own personal opinions and ideas alot, but hes cool.
Doesn't teach anything, instead, he UNteaches everything you ever learned. Only teaches half truths, ignoring facts. If you like Michael Moore, than he’s a teacher for you. If you hate the guy, stay out of this class.

Got an A. One of the best teachers I've ever taken. Intellectual, open-minded, & makes class enjoyable. Do all reading assignments & essays. Participate in discussions. If you want to learn, then take him. The class really makes you anyalize U.S. hist.
I'd take this class again if I could too!! =) Awesome prof! You really learn a whole lot in his class. It's not like High School hist. class. Intellegent people understand what he's talking about. People who complain about him tend to be the slackers!!
do something with that hair.
I took his class before I transfered out of Saddleback and even now..find my thoughts wandering towards him. He made me breathless, it might have been love. I don't know.
Lots and Lots of homework and lots of reading. Very interesting guy. Just do the homework and you'll be fine. No tests.
Braatz is a very unique and talented teacher. He wants his students to make up their own minds about what they are being taught-he wants students to find their own truths in regards to history. I would take this class again in an instant!
This class requires ALOT of reading!Every week you read about 50 pgs, maybe more. Not hard, just time consuming. One good thing is there are no test or Quizes. If you hate homework,I don't recommend him.
Lots of reading but you can hand in late assignments and still get full credit.Very liberal views, sometimes arrogant, but all in all an interesting class. He's very skeptical of the government, very eye opening. No memorization, tests or anything, just daily reading and short essay questions.
Hands down one of the best professors ever. His unconventioanl methods of teaching are refreashing and provocative. He is absolutly brilliant. If he taught more classes i would take all of them
Best teacher ever, all republicans and bush supporters should take this class so that maybe one day common sense will be a part of their lives :)
Best History teacher at Saddleback. He teaches you the real History of this country. No Tests!! There will homework every night but it is very easy. A lot of reading, material is not boring. Very easy grader. Guaranteed A if you do your work and show up. Will be enrolling in other classes.
This was his first time teaching humanaties and I think that he should stay with history. This guy only wanted to talk about Meso America the whole semester; it was so boring that only 1/3 of the class showed each day. I had to really try to stay awake. No tests, all grades are done by'feeling'.WTF?
This man will teach you anything you'd like to know about HISTORY. A very genuine person...take him not becuase he is easy but becuase you will learn more from him than I did from 3 teachers.
makes you think and has very unconventional teaching methods.By far the best class i have ever attended.
Way easy,no tests grade just based on HW. HE doesnt keep track of points just do the HW and book reports and u get an A.If u want to actially learn history, take him!He is very knowledgable and wil teach u waht u want to know.Only downsides are the HW questions are kindalong and lectures are boring.
Excellent teacher with ALL TRUTH about the coruptness of America, and was the only class that taught the truth of America. All brainwashed Americans and Bush lovers need to take this class and stop being in denial!!!
no tests. all reading and homework. if you do all of the homework and dont fall behind then its not stressful. oh, and two book reports
No tests, a grip of homework. do the homework and show up, your money
He doesn’t have tests. Do the reading, the home work and participate in class discussions. If you do that the class is easy. Participating in class discussions and Attendance key, if you like to miss class or sit in the back and not say anything, take another class.
Very interesting and funny class. He is very nice and laid back. Do you reading and turn in assignments, you'll do fine. Show up to class. You'll learn alot. He will open up your mind to new ideas. Very helpful and insightful. I definetly reccomend his class
Braatz is a joker. He's a smart guy, but doesn't have a clue when it comes to running a class. This class consisted with mainly borning lectures mixed in with some interesting ones. There were also stupid books for reading accompanied with long reading questions and a final paper. No one knew their grade except for Braatz's favorites. Don't take!

Arrogant man with self-proclaimed omniscience. He says everyone looks alike but he looks like everyone at Trader Joes. No tests, just long homework. Summarize Zinn and it's an easy A.
Where do I begin? There are no tests, just HW assignments every class session, lots of reading in Zinns book, if you don't do all the assignments for the semester, you will FAIL!!He doesn't care at all!
He looks like a hippie but grades like a hard line comunist. Iwould not recomend him to anyone who wants to get an A or B, its that simple. At any given time you do NOT know your grade. He says 'students only care about the grade', so u buy into his no-grade-info game and then get slapped with a C.
Oneword to describe him: Dangerous. Why you ask? Because he is capable and willing of ruining your tramsfer plans and delaying them a whole semester when he hand out the SURPRISE C, D or even F! and yes he did hand out several F's in our honors class... funny that his is the only HP class where students actauly fail instead of excell... DANGEROUS!!
if you don't have the same views as he does you will fail! i didn't miss one class and di the assignments; i still failed! the only thing that he will teach you are his views! that is not teaching!
He was pretty easy if you do the homework, but just don't let him see you smoking or he will get on your case about that.
very confusing teacher no tests have homework assignments typed each week at all costs dont take him
Braatz is easy as hell. Whoever fails his class is just lazy. You will learn so much in his class. Anyone who fails to listen to his lectures do so only bc they chose to stay ignorant. He's excellent!!
A cool thing was not having any tests count towards the grade. It's just a matter of reading & answering the quesitons, attending class(<?). The text was a book by Howard Zinn, so you'll have 20 pages+or- of that, plus two novels, all pretty easy reads, the novels especially. His politics are left-wing. He's got a good sense of humor, and a PHD.
Liberal.... who thinks HE is the only one that is "right" about EVERYTHING. Only say your opinion if you want him to make you look stupid for saying something or asking a question. He hates America and is proud to say how stupid we all are and thinks he can teach all of us something....like we're his project to make us all liberals? Good luck.
He is seriously the easiest anbd most interesting professor. If you dont get an A you are missing a chromosome.

he's funny, overall good teacher
A lot of reading and writing, but there are no tests which evens it out. Nice guy, but I must say it is hard to take someone seriously when they want our country to be like Holland. Why does every professor always have to push the left wing agenda? They're making our youth stupid not smarter. It is truly sad. I want to LEARN something truthful!
his only agenda is making u hate everything about our country. yeah there r no tests but a test might save u every now and then in the points factor...basically if u like spending ur time reading 50 page chapters and writing essay answers every night to repetitive questions then this is the class for u!
Hes way hard...dont take his class. All his views suck, and he only thinks he is right. Trys to get you to believe in his ways! All you do his homework and lectures...no fun...if you want to fail take his class!!!!!
Loves the native Americans, hate Bush, very clear on his political viewpoints. Loves to debate and will not give up until he "wins". Read chapter and write 1 page for each lecture. No tests, no final, only lectures and reading.
Timothy is a great teacher. I love how everyone who has anything bad to say about him can't even spell. You're in college; I'm really sorry that you're expected to (gasp) READ, and WRITE?! This class really opened my eyes. Very worthwhile. Even if you don't agree with his politics, his goal is to make you think.
ooh my gosh, TIM-O-TEE is freaking easy as pie. I slept in his class and got an A. NO TESTS. all you do is homework based on a book that can be found on the net, and read two highschool level texts and write about them. Id say the book reports are probably the hardest thing. SO EASY. and i hate history, which is why i still fell asleep and got an A
Tons of work. Dont let yourself fall behind or it becomes difficult to catch up. But you still get full credit for late work! and no tests. Kinda crazy guy at times
This guy is ridiculous. He is an arrogant a****** who thinks he knows everything. During the end of the semester, I asked him what my missing assignments were. He said if I turned in the missing things, I would pass the class. So I busted my a**, and I got a D. I got good grades on the book reports, did the assignments, and still got a D. Do not ta
His only agenda is to get you to hate everything about our country in his ridiculous hopes that we will all revolt and overthrow our "oppressive" government someday. I got an A, but prepare to be exposed to his far leftist extremist propoganda every day. No tests because he's one of those silly idealist "Knowledge can't be measured by a grade"
This class in an eassy A. You'll have 2 questions to answer (1/2 page for each answer) out of a chapter of a book (20-25 pages each chapter) for each class period and 2 book reports. That's it. HW is graded on a 1-4 scale; book reports are graded on a F-A scale. NO TEST. The class is pretty entertaining as long as you have a good sense of humor.

It is an easy class, but it is also very easy to fall behind your reading.
He's a good, straight forward professor, if you show up to class and do the homework you will get an A. dont walk in late though or leave early or he'll get mad.
Professor Braatz is one of the best history teachers on campus, besides Lovette. He makes the class very interesting. No exams. Just a typed up page answering 2 questions he asks per chapter. This class not only saved time for me, but kept me motivated. He grades fairly. Attend class. You won't regret taking him.
Awesome guy. You will learn A LOT from him. He makes the class interesting. Not much work. Easy "A" if you do the homework. Just one page worth of 2 essay questions per class meetings. That's easy. No exams. Great professor!
I took Hist 22 with Professor Braatz back in 2004 I think,he was THE best professor I've had. Extremely bright and self disciplined. His class was my favorite. I've known him for a while and still seek advice from him. He is not hesitant to criticize our dear King(s). His class is faily easy and very interesting. His teachings are very motivating.
Class is easy. Yes there were NO tests at all. No midterm. No final. However, way too much homework was assigned. 1 page single spaced a week about the chapter. Too much work for a history class. I would rather have tests than to complete all this busy work in which means nothing.
Challenging class, but Braatz is a thinker! Expert in Native American cuisine. I never knew the Sioux could shoot arrows from underneath their horses.
He deceived me. I played into his ridiculous "no-grade" game and fell victim. I didn't miss any lectures and did all the work that was required for the class and yet i received a grade lower than a "B". He doesnt realize that to us students grades are everything and we are paying good money for an educational opportunity. His whole class was a joke
Amazing guy. Gives a new look on things that you learned in previous history classes. You can fall behind if you dont do the reading so just do it its is really easy the book is cheap and fun and easy to read i loved his class so much. Also at the begging of each class students pick disscusion topics.
He is a very good teacher and has a realistic approach to history. But, the work load is too intense for a gen ed class. No tests, but you will write more than in an English class; if you have the time take him, if not, look elsewhere.
He is kind of a sick man. He doesn't come to class to teach and earn a living, he comes to class to experiment and give us work (in both classes i have taken.) His classrooms are havens to spread his biased political theories. A nazi-hippy who gets off on giving out F's in his honors class. The grading has no format, I would go with Reeve or Petri
Braatz is the bomb. Do not take him if you are too busy for school and/or hate history. He will make you learn. There are no tests, but, you must write a lot. I'm a finance freak and I do not believe that I would have a realistic view about the US economy and the world with our taking this guy's class.
If you want to learn, this is the class. You read a lot and write a lot, but the books are great and read like novels. He is an interesting guy, lot more interesting than the high school football coaches we had in high school for history
No tests, lots of writing, however he is not interested in format so you don't have to use perfect grammar --just prove that you learned something in the readings. Go to class. He is extremely opinionated but you don't have to agree with him to get an A, just pretend to feel sorry for everybody that America encountered and you'll get an A.
THERE ARE NO TESTS, BUT A LOT OF READING. HE SURPRISED ME WITH A LOW GRADE WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS DOING WELL. I TURNED IN EVERYTHING HE COLLECTED AND GOT D. HE THINKS HE KNOWS EVERYTHING AND RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING. HE SAYS HE DOESNT BELIEVE IN GRADES OR TESTS, BUT DONT TRUST HIM ON THAT.
Mr. Braatz is very clear on what he expects: attendance to all classes, 2 missed classes in a once a week class could result in a fail, and all homework completed. Here's a tip, actually read the book because he does read every word you write. He is fair and as long as you are not a jack ass and you attend all classes you should get an A.
I am super conservative and didn't really agree with any of his opinions but I smoked the class with an easy A. If you can get past the liberal opinions (for conservatives) its no problem. You read a chapter and answer a couple questions and there are a couple book reports. All you really learn is how mean America is.
Okay class..it really opened my eyes to how the U.S. really is. But I learned all of that from the textbook, so his lectures are kind of useless. You have to attend class and if you miss assignments you'll fail. But you don't really feel like attending when you already got the points from the hw the night before.
Lots of work, but no tests. He lectures the entire class and is extremely knowledgable on the subject. but he is very left-wing liberal, so if you aren't into that, don't even bother with this class. very entertaining. if you wanna know the truth about our country, take this class.
I took this class several semesters ago. It was the best class I have had! He is an amazing teacher, very knowledgeable. I learned so much from him. It is an interesting and easy class. Read the book, answer a few questions from each chapter and then complete two book reports instead of taking a mid term/final.
If you have an open mind you'll love him. Work load is easy and classes are interesting.
If you want an EXTREMELY liberal, biased, and pessimistic view of America, take this class.
The history book used is great..very honest.
Great teacher. Really knows his stuff. Even if you don't agree, he will get you thinking. We read three books. The only required work is a journal which you write in after your reading. There is an optional paper if you want to get an A. Take this class.
Awesome professor, one of best I've ever had at SC. He is very open minded and knows his stuff and makes the class fun, I used to hate history but after taking his class I seriously couldn't stop reading the books that were required for the class, you read 3 books, 2 of them you do a book report on instead of having to take a midterm/final.
no test, just assigments, really easy, just read, type and turn in, this equals an A
Brilliant and sexy. A People's Hisotry of the United States by Howard Zinn is his textbook, what more do you want?
Really easy teacher, hes very knowledgable in what he teaches, but you need to complete every single assingment to pass, i failed the class for missing 3 assignments out of the million he assigned.
If you are normally quite in class and prefer to listen he will curve your grade majorly. The subject is great but this professor thinks that he something above human and cocky. Don't like him and he should have done most of the lecturing instead of letting the class lecture the whole time because thats how the majority of us lost him.
Braatz is intelligent and a good lecturer, but if you miss too many days or assignments he will fail you. He has no compassion for his students, and is very cynical about America. The class is interesting but depressing.
He knows a lot about native americans (his specialty), and that is about all he knows how to actually teach. He is a go on a whim teacher who teaches what he likes. Not your traditionally organized class.
He does NOT fail you for missing only three assignments, that's total BS, and he does not grade on a curve, these people were just lazy with the homework and didn't do the reading so now they want to blame Braatz for it. He's very helpful and compassionate if you're honest and hardworking. He just actually wants you to learn.
ok dosent give tests but lots of papers u have to do. I'd be careful though b/c he teaches from a socialist point of view book and if you have a belief in God or something he makes you feel very uncomfortable by his lectures. He does have lots of information on US but he makes it seem all our past fathers in US were a joke. class is kindof depressin
This professor is a good one. He knows his material. But, be careful! LOTS OF HOMEWORK!!!! Also, he assigns two very long papers. The HW is non-stop. So, if you're very dedicated to HW then take this class. If not... DO NOT! No tests though. Also, He's suspicious of everything you do. And very one sided. He teaches from a "America is bad" view.
Depressing class. He is blatantly biased to the point of closed-mindedness. Clearly hates America, whites, and Christianity. Still somewhat of a fun class. Absolutely no standard textbook- just a book from an author that clearly shares his America-hating views. Jokes around a lot, but not too open to discussion. REALLY USES HIS CLASS to preach...
lots of homework; essays for every class; easy if you keep up with reading. do not get caught behind! no tests, funny guy. he gives you a different perspective to US history. the anti-American perspective. i recommend taking this class if you are a dedicated student. if you do not like alot of homework, dont take this class
He comes off very strongly... He stays very strong. Good man, though. Great teacher, open to questions and provides a different approach than conventional teaching. Yes, you need to do all the homework, but it's not bad at all (You can turn things in LATE). Definetely recommended for casual students or history majors, be prepared to do usual hmk
Class requires involvement. There are not tests but lots of reading and writing. Success requires a desire to learn and think critically. He is not anti-american, but he does want to break down the americentric perceptions of society. A benchmark for learning is to challenge established ideas, get used to it.
Very interesting class. I recommend anyone taking it if they are curious about nonviolent struggles. If you don't like or understand his points or views you can challenge him without any repercussion...in fact he encourages it. How often do you have that kind of opportunity?
Braatz is not your typical teacher, he likes to hear what the students think. He encourages interaction and asking questions. He has a very different view on the world but it can really open your mind up. Most interesting history class I have ever taken. Learned a lot. Some homework, and a final report on a chosen topic or involvement with communit
Braatz is one of the most inspired and witty teachers i have been taught by. He knows his history and gives a different perspective on conventional history. He is very personable and open to critisism and commentary. Assigns alot of homework but that is to assure you are learning the material and understand the content. Not a socialist!
he's pretty chill although he assigns reading basically every single night. you can't get behind or you're toast. great eacher overall, though. i recommend taking his class along with twicken, the combined class. you won't regret it.
Really interesting non-traditional take on history, kinda from the "underdog" perspective. Very passionate about what he teaches, but doesn't shove his ideologies down your throat. Totally open to intelligent debate and welcomes all commentary, even more so if you disagree with him. He's also really funny!
A very radical teacher. Idolizes Ward Churchill. He hates America and doesn't try to hide it. Has a elitist/cocky attitude. No tests or midterm/final. Easy class but a lot of writing. Lots of class discussions. If you disagree with him he will pick you apart and try to humiliate you in front of the whole class.
going to class is very boring. he takes role tho so you kinda have to go. all the class consists of is reading from a book every night and answering questions. you can't get behind. IF YOU DON'T LIKE A LOT OF READING AND TYPING AND HOMEWORK, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! there's two book reports and a final. that's it. braatz is strange and too outspoken.
Teaches the truth which doesn't get out much these days. ANYONE WHO THINKS IT IS HATE BASED RHETORIC then give an example. Highly recommend taking this class if you want to learn about real history and not just a nationalist fairy tale.
coolest teacher ive ever had. talk alot of sh** but it keeps your attention. you need to read alot, like a whole lot but theres no tests so its not that bad. I hate history but i like it in his class. i would take him again fersure. if you think he hates america n white people or whatever than your too effin sensitive.
im kinda on the edge with braatz. he is an amazing teacher, and u are guranteed to learn so much. his classes are so interesting and he keeps u interested. one the other side tho... way too much reading and writing homework! but no midterm and final, so it sort of makes up for the homework deal. he is amazing! take his class!!!
Has a lot of opinions and isn't afraid to share them..will pick apart any argument you have that he disagrees with, yet he wants everyone to participate in class. Alot of writing and reading. I feel like I'm in a poli sci class rather then history because it's a constant debate about politics. I would have taken poli sci if I wanted politics!
Don't take this class if you are a Republican. He is really biast in his teachiNgs and the book you have to read. DON'T TAKE IF YOU DONT LIKE WRITING A LOT FOR HOMEWORK EVERY DAY YOU HAVE THE CLASS. there's no tests or quizzes but you have 2 book reports to do while you are also required to do your other long homework assignments
His class involves a lot of reading and writing. no tests or quizzes. dont fall behind on homework or you will fail
Very opinionated. Very boring class if you don't like politics. Nice guy, very smart. Will argue with anyone about anything. No tests but alot of reading. Accepts late hw. No grading scale at all, he gives you the grade he thinks you deserve.
Enjoying his class. There's a TON of reading and if you dont like to read and write page-length answers, then dont take the class. You have to set aside a lot of time for history 22. Braatz is a great teacher! He makes history very interesting
Awesome teacher! The kind of teacher the world needs, class discussion is highly encouraged, no tests, and show up and do your homework and youve got an A. not because its easy but because you are actually learning something! Really cool class too
Horrible teacher. Comes into class, sits in his chair, and says, "What do you want to know?" I think he should tell us what he thinks is important to know. Pointless class time and tons of homework/book reports. Answer questions on book and have to set margins all the way to side and write single space, filling up the page. Wil get A if you do work
No exams *at all* balances out the fact that you write about 500 words per hw assignment from a ~25 pg chapter. & be sure your book reports (2) are 5+ pgs or else you redo them. He shares the same leftist views with the author, so at least that's cool. Different method of teaching. Even though I resented every day of the class, I learned something.
i missed 3 classes and failed. i did 90%of the homework and got A's on the hw and A's on the book reports and he failed me. do not take teacher inless you are a liberal, and being there 100% of the time and agreeing with him 100% of the time and dong 100% of the work,my friend missed one homework assignment and got a B
Anyone saying they failed for not doing "a few" assignments is just in denial about how much work they didn't do. Braatz allows you two weeks to turn in late work, and an almost unlimited amount of time to redo your book reports. So your work has to be thorough and you actually have to read and show up to class, what's the big shocker?
A wanna-be University Prof at a community college. I worked my ass off for the A I got, but I know other people who worked just as hard and failed. He either likes you or not, and I guess I got lucky. He does not even grade his own papers, so how could he give out the grades? You have to have perfect attendance or you are screwed.
whether or not braatz passes you has nothing to do with whether or not he likes you. (i got an A and he did NOT like me). that is the language of people who didn't want to read and write thoroughly and are trying to make excuses because they expect to get a good grade without working for it like they did in high school. GROW UP.
I learned a lot and thought he was great. I got an A but had to work hard for it. Take this teacher if you actually want to learn.
Awesome. Show up otherwise youll fail. No final, super easy if you enjoy reading liberal books that tell it how it is. Attendance is everything. Overall, rad!
This professor is one of the most knowledgeable I have encountered. He is the head of the History Department, so his class is not for lazy people. If you want an A, you must show up and complete every assignment and 2 book essays. I learned so much, and I have nothing but good things to say about him. Just dont be lazy and an A is very possible.
awesome teacher. overall good person. awesome class. don't leave your assignments till the last week though. other then that be ready for an awesome class
Seriously? This guy is the BEST History Professor in the world!!! This class is only good for NON-LAZY butts. He does give a****load of reading and writing, but he is very entertaining and you DO learn no matter what. His teaching style is unique and he respects you as long as you respect him by following the rules. Awesome guy, seriously!
Extremely arrogant, if you do ask him a question make sure it?s anti-American, If you are a Liberal who loves chain thought then you will love this class and book, if you are a Conservative stay away from this class.
The most arragont, condesending teacher I have ever had, does not like America and attendence is a must as well and reading a book that shares his radical views. Do your own research before believing him. Overall I suggest not taking this teacher and careful asking questions if you disagree with him he will try to humilate you.
This professor is both condescending and arrogant, but its the condescending part that upsets me the most. He grades not on how much effort you put into your work, but how much it agrees with his own thoughts on the subject. His topics are interesting, but he does not give positive feedback for thinking differently. Worst teacher i've ever had.
This class was a great mix between a discussion/ethics class and a history class. You learn about nonviolent movements, but also have the chance to talk out the world today and theory. There was a lot of reading and answering questions, but that is the history side of it. If you're truly interested and like to discuss, you'll pass with an A/B.
Braatz was a fun teacher. He is the definition of a textbook liberal college professor so he spouts anti-american garbage all the time. I'm a right wing conservative and I loved going into his class everyday and debating with him, along with Professor Twicken. He knows his stuff so if you want a good teacher and worthy debating adversary, take him!
I'm not quite sure how this guy is a professor and especially one of History, doesn't care for America too much as does the book you have read. The homework is very much mandatory, overall if your wan't to learn about American history I suggest a different class you won't find it here.
Braatz is one of THE most arrogant and definitely condescending teachers I think I've ever had. I say the same thing as many other comments, to make it VERY CLEAR that he really is. I've learned nothing, this class was a waste of my time. If I wanted to hear someones crazy views I'd tune to AM640! The hw was ridiculous and he is a hard grader!
Braatz is an amazing Professor! He does give allot of work but by doing the work you actually learn about history. 2 papers every week and 2 book reports throughout the semester, no tests! Do your work and participate and you will get a good grade. He is the best professor to take if you want a different perspective on History.
Horrible and arrogant teacher, your grade is based on what he feels you deserve. makes you ask questions in class but then talks down to you. argues with anyone who disagrees with him. Bottom line: do not take this teacher
He is a tough teacher but if you really want to learn and understand US Hist he is the teacher to take. Make sure you do NOT miss more than 4 classes because otherwise he fails you no matter what! I did all the hw, the two book reports and got A's on everything but I missed 5 classes and failed. He is a bit too liberal but a good teacher.
His class is simple but a lot of work. You type out a paper for each class based on the readings he assigns from the book. Which comes out to about 30 papers throughout the semester, with two book reports on top of it. This and attendance are the only things you're graded on, no tests.
Professor Braatz has his opinions like any other person who is not mentally inept, but defends them with an intellectual fervor. At times he strays into ambiguity, but mainly to stimulate thought. I began Peace Studies with many preconceived notions, but have really enjoyed the exposure to opposing perspectives. Take him if you want to learn.
He teaches this subject from a Marxist point of view, as he mentions on the first day of class. Basically your grade comes down to an essay due every single class from the reading, two book reports and attendance. He knows the subject well, you'll learn a lot more from him than most other history teachers. Show up and do the work, easy class.
Professor Braatz is a great instructor & was very clear from the first day of class about what he expected of his students. Keep up with homework, the readings, and his lectures (like a serious college student would) and you'll manage just fine. This is not your typical history class. It's actually far more enlightening.
Braatz is a really cool professor. You have to read a lot out of the text and you write a response paper on what you wrote. These papers are mandatory are basically what your final grade comes from. Just do the work and participate in class. He is a blunt and funny guy and the class goes by quickly.
Worst Teacher do not take unless you want to be bored to death and work extremely hard.
Amazing smart man. I really enjoyed his class. Very different teaching style which was a nine change and actually helped me learn. The reading Is not hard just kind of boring at times but its all worth it because i actually learned some things about my.own country. Attendance is a must if you want a good grade and dont fall behind on reading assgn.
All you really need to do is show up to class, do the homework, and actually try on the essays. There is almost always homework and two books reports. No notes in class ever. No hard tests. Most interesting history class I ever took and probably one of the easiest as well as favorite.
Proffesor Braatz honestly changed my way of thinking about the world, in the most positive way. He is very intelligent, and open-minded. He is not a typical professor who throws tests at you, or any busy work. Instead, he likes to engage in real conversations to make people think critically. You will not forget this professor, or what you learn.
Class was boring. He just talked about his own opinions and what he thought was right. All about attendance in the end. Not recommended.
He has a unique style of teaching that may put some people off at first, but every student will gain something from his class. He really engages with students instead of just giving info, which is awesome. I learned about such a wide range of topics, on many different levels in that class. He cares about his job and I really respect him.
Best teacher I have ever had. You can tell he really loves what he teaches. There are no tests, just homework. Homework can even be turned in late. I learned more about history from him then I ever did all four years in high school. I even took his Peace Studies class the next semester, because I enjoyed his classes so much.
Very easy. No tests but a lot of homework. You learn a lot more like this. Class was fun he teaches you what YOU want to learn.
Easily worst teacher i ever had. I did everything right on the homework, but i got a D. He talked bad about Christian, which may be why i did not pass...
I don't know if this guy has teachers tenure or what because he literally sits in a chair in the middle of the classroom for an hour and fifteen; that basically and literally describes the whole class. The only thing that saves this guy's class is the book. Save your money and just buy "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn.
No tests. Lots of HW. Book Reports. Learn a lot. Amazing teacher. Took him again for Peace Studies. HW is read a CH then right about it. Same with book report. You learn what you want to learn. Laid back & you can turn in HW late.
Braatz is a very intelligent teacher. I'm taking his online class and have already learned so much. If you're looking for a class where you can slide by with an easy grade, this is definitely not for you. There is a massive work load since this is an 8 week class, but it is very doable.
Professor Braatz is one of the most inspirational teachers I've ever had in my life. If you're thinking this is just another boring history class, you're wrong. He teaches things in a nonconventional way that you don't really see in very many teachers. Its a lot of reading but just do the work and have an open mind and you'll learn a lot.
What I will say is that Prof. Braatz is very intelligent and obviously is passionate about what he teaches. This class was based on a textbook by Howard Zinn, so of course its going to be a more left winged. But seriously, the guy grades like a Socialist (i.e., "make the 400 word limit and you'll pass; I don't care what it's about")
Professor Braatz was very involved in the discussion boards and gave great feedback. He graded assignments very quickly so you were not left guessing. He didn't give any tests and writing assignments were based on assigned reading. It was not hard as long as you did the reading. Great class, great teacher. I highly recommend taking his class.
Do not buy the book. Teacher provides a link to free digital version. No tests. Participation in the discussion boards are mandatory and there are 16 written assignments (800 word essays). Teacher is an extreme leftist. Slant your essays and discussion board in a leftist fashion you will get an A (basically just agree with him on everything).
I took this course as part of my GE requirement, without any major interest in history. However, this was the most interesting college course I've taken yet. Professor Braatz is extremely knowledgeable and teaches U.S. history in a non-traditional way. Clear syllabus and instructions. Do the work and learn something, you'll get an A.
I took an 8-week-onine-class. I also have been very interested in this topic, but had to overcome the language barrier, because I am a non-native speaker. Personally, I have been honored to be one of his students. His instructions were open and honest. Do your work, learn and you will not only get a good grade, but you will learn a lot.
Professor Braatz is one of the best professors. He is so intelligent and he has such a strong passion for history. I took his eight week class, and although it it a lot of reading, it is worth putting in the effort. i would recommend this class to anyone, even people who aren't interested in history.
Took as an 8 week class. No tests. 2 lectures weekly with a corresponding discussion board. 2 chapter readings weekly with a writing assignment. The writing assignments are 400 words per question and there are 4 questions for the week. It sucks but there are no tests and if you do the work you can get 100% in the class. Book is free online
This was the best class. Doesn't believe in tests. Each week you read (a lot) and write an essay with a minimum of 800 words as well as do 2 discussion points. EXCELLENT teacher. Believes that there are no "wrong" opinions and encourages arguments. Must participate as that is most of your grade. Took an 8 week online course.
Took this as an online 8 week course. 2 lectures, 2 chapters to read (must answer 2 questions, 400 word response for each question), and 2 discussion posts (your post, and reply to 2 other threads). Super interesting lectures and responds quickly to emails. Easiest A, but reading is a MUST!
GREAT CLASS, just do the work! He uses a free online text (Zinn), from which you read 2 chaps/wk and write 2-400 word essays. Each chap also has a pdf lecture (the saving grace of the class) with online discussion questions. It is a TON of reading & writing! I disagree with the person who said you had to agree with him. Be open minded, that's all!
Do not take! Avoid at all costs.
He does not tech, he uses the classroom as his personal pulpit to preach "Government is ALL bad" ideology. There is little room to none to have a different opinion. Also, I understand is college, but his language could be moderated in his written lectures... it is not professional and evidently he is trying too hard to be "cool".
Braatz comes off cool, but he isn't teaching to make friends. I would take the class based off your political views. Braatz is basically a communist/socialist representative and he will go on and on why he is correct, even if he dead wrong. If you agree with him, you'll get an A. If you do all of the work but love America, he will give you a C.
Since this is an online course, there is a lot of material to read. I took an 8 week course of his, so the weeks were split into 2 which meant 2 lectures a week, 2 homework assignments and 2 discussion boards. However the topics were so interesting that I always had so much to say. A lot of work, but a year later i still talk about topics covered.
Professor Braatz' course is straight forward and not very difficult as long as you do the homework and participate in the discussions. He doesn't give any exams throughout the entire semester so your grade will rely solely on homework and participation. I took the class online, and found the assignments to actually be interesting and informative.
You know, he changed his syllubus already which means you MUST respond to at least 2 person's discussion on the Blackboard per week. AND you MUST have 2-800 words essays per week if you take the 8-week online class. 2-800!! which means 1600 words per week. You must read and write essays.
To be honest, I took a lot of online classes. Braatz is the MOST responsible professor. Most !!! He sent you emails 8 times in 2 weeks before your online class begin. Very clearly instructions. Respond to your discussion EVERY day. But you know, responsible professors need you participate in his class more. +++
+++you are supposed to post at least 2 times for one chapter. BUT he said that he expected you to post 7 times for one chapter. And 800 words essay for one chapter. If you took the 8 week online class, you need to finish 2 chapters per week. To be honest, Braatz is a great professor. But if you are lazy like me, don't , even try to take.
Took his 8 Week online course, very helpful and there for you. He sends out emails weeks before the class starts to make sure you're prepared which just means that he really cares about his students even in an online setting. He is very helpful and answers every question you ask. His lectures are easy to follow and the DB's give clarity on topics.
I took his 8 week class, you only need to do 2 discussion boards, and 2 essasy each 800 words per week, chapters are 20-30 pages long, if you put time and read, you find the naswers so easilly, and discussion board is not a hard thing honestly, plus no exam or exam !what else do you want ?take him and you get A easilly if you just read the chapters
Professor Braatz makes history interesting. I am not a fan of US history but I really enjoyed this course. It required a lot of writing and reading, but the assignments are not difficult just time consuming.
Great professor! emails you all the info you need to pass the class and responds to emails fast! I chose an 8 week online class. It wasn't easy but it wasn't hard at the same time. A LOT of reading and two 400 word essays due every chapter. You MUST participle in discussion boards. Read, answer the essays, and you will get an A.
A M A Z I N G. One of the BEST history class I have ever taken. Seriously, this was an online course, but you learn more than the traditional classroom setting. Each week, you read two chapters. First ones due thursday, second is due sunday. You write 800 words + LOTS of discussion board participation for two times a week. BUT you learn SOO MUCH.
Amazing experience, the kind of guy you wish you could hang out with and pick his brain every so often. A wealth of knowledge.
He was a really rad guy. I would love to take another class with him.
Although the assignments are not difficult, they are very time consuming and require thought and consideration. Overall, Timothy is a caring guy that is quick to respond and is genuinely interested in his students. (As a side note, he sends out 5+ emails before the class starts. Although they may seem intimidating, you'll get into the swing)
He is great at getting back to emails fast. I took the 8 week course, it sometimes was a lot of work. You have two DB's a week have to respond to at least 2 people (respond to more than 2 people he likes when you do that), four questions and each question has to be answered in 400 words or more. You have to do you best on the questions.
Lectures were decent. Makes them more interesting than other history classes that I have taken. Excessive amounts of homework. Oblivious to the fact that there we are taking other classes and have outside responsibilities. If you work or are taking other classes, DO NOT TAKE.
BEWARE! Take anyone but him! If you like the military or like America don't take this class. Worse teacher. Yea his class is easy but you'll have to deal with his opinions, not actual facts about his hate towards them both. Also he'll embarrass you if you disagree with him. This is an opinion based class, if you're trying learn don't take.
The history course seems to be overwhelming at first, but with time you start getting used to the work. A lot of students complain, but that's because it's one semester worth of work in 8 weeks. Initially I was ready to back out but the lectures and reading really interested me. There's no tests or quizzes, but lots of reading and writing.
Professor braatz is a great teacher. He is a tuff grader but if you follow his directions you should be fine. Learned some very cool information!
I have to retake this class because I missed too many lectures. But if I had just done them, easy A. Highly recommend. Do the work, pass the class. NO TESTS & NO FINAL. Book is free online and he gives you the link. Easiest class ever. I'm telling you, just do the work and get the easiest A.
Online class. If you do the reading, writing, and participate, you'll pass. Be prepared to be challenged on your thoughts and conclusions. He doesn't believe in tests, so you are graded solely by the quality of your work instead of how well you memorize insane details of what you read. I wish all professors structured their online classes this way
I want to balance out some of the other reviews. Yes, Dr. Braatz teaches from a bias. He's very clear about that. But he does not grade you down for disagreeing with him. I disagreed with him plenty and openly challenged him and disagreed with him on the DB's. He didn't 'embarass me.' If you failed his class, it wasn't because of your opinions.
I'm currently taking HIST 17 online. Professor Braatz has completely changed my outlook on history. He teaches critical history rather than celebratory history, unlike most other teachers/professors I have had in the past. There is a lot of reading, but it is SO interesting. He writes out his lectures in a way that makes history easy to understand!
Awesome professor. Lectures are hilarious and informative. There is a pretty decent amount of reading but its so interesting I didn't even notice. He's one of those teachers that knows when you don't fully understand a concept. He grades you on your understanding of concepts, and ability to think and expand on ideas. Take him if you love to learn
The book that you read in this class is amazing, it is not your typical boring history book. This book will show you the true American history! Professor Braatz is awesome and is always willing to answer any questions you may have. He responds right away with any questions you may have. This is one of my favorite classes that I have ever taken.
He is one of the best teachers ever. Lots of reading, but so interesting. Not judgmental, not a jerk, but keep your mind open before taking this class or youll get mad if you don't like what hes teaching. By far my favorite class. No tests no exams, no papers. Easy a History should be taught the way he teaches. So interesting that I bought the book
Engage with the content and the professor. Don't take everything he says as FACT, but do your own outside research and you will learn SO much. I also disagreed with him MANY times but he doesn't grade against you for having a different opinion. That being said, he's witty, sarcastic, knowledgeable, and worth taking!
I took his History 22 online class, I was a bit skeptical taking a history course online since history is a tough subject to take but I have to say that Professor Braatz is a great professor! To get an A in this class means, you have to participate in weekly DB's and do all your homework. His grading is fair and there is a lot of reading.
Prof Braatz was such an awesome professor. I could understand the class being a little difficult if you do not have similar opinions to him, but he is very straightforward when it comes to telling his students he teaches from a bias. I took HIS eight-week class and he does two discussion boards and two essay question assignments a week. His lecture
Took his class online, which to my surprise was very interesting! He focuses more on "critical history" instead of "celebratory history", which allows you to see American history from a different perspective. A++ teacher, however there is a TON of reading (as in any other hist class). I suggest using text to speech on your computer! No tests either
2 Discussion Boards, 2 essays per week. Be ready to read and participate in this class. Be open minded, there are going to be a lot of different opinions in this class. Professor doesn't care what your opinion is as long as its factual based and not close-minded. Professor is very left leaning but if you have an open mind to anything, your good!
I recommend Professor Braatz for not just History 17, but for any online History class he is teaching. I took him for the first eight weeks so get ready to do the reading but it is definitely worth it. Two discussion posts and 2 writing assignments a week and a fair grader. Grading is based on how much you have learned in the class.
I took his 8 week course and this class is not an easy A, so be prepared to work. The material he has for the 8 week is absolutely insightful and the approach to teaching history is different from any other history class you had before. 8 week consists of two writing assignments totaling 1,600 words + two discussions with replies. NO TESTS and BOOK
Tough grader.. I also felt he favored certain students. He posted my grade way before even the semester was over, along with not even grading my extra credit. He gave up on me and I was not happy about it. I even reported him to the Dean.
This is the most amazing professor I have ever taken. He is incredibly engaged with the students. His lectures are hilarious and interesting. He encourages his students to think critically. If you read the material you will get an A. I honestly wish that he could teach all of my classes. Such a forward thinker. You will learn to think in his class
If you want an easy A, don't take him. His class isn't impossible; you just have to be willing to read & work. It's really not that bad, but if you're lazy it will be. He is SO knowledgable & teaches you things about history that transcends what you're taught in k-12. Everyone should take him, but I don't think everyone is ready to actually learn.
Forget everything you learned in grade school. Prof. Braatz has really given me a whole new view on our nations history. Homework and reading are heavy, but worth it. He makes discussions thought provoking and you will actually walk away from this class remembering facts instead of it just being "another class". No tests and participation is key.
The class asks you to read a couple of chapters of Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" every week. Once you do that, you respond to the chapter and your classmates in discussion posts. The anarcho-communism pushed in the class is bearable, but be ready to receive a lot of feedback if you don't feel that way. Overall good class.
Professor Braatz is not a good prof nor is he a nice guy. Not very accessible outside of class and his assignments are very very long. Little bit excessive work for this type of class. Only nice thing about him is that he doesnt do tests. If you have to take him, I guess he is ok, but I suggest trying to find someone else who cares about students
I don't understand these reviews. He is by far the best History Professor there is! Yes, reading the book, answering two discussions boards and 2 sets of questions every week can seem like a lot but he tells u clearly what days to start posting and what days we should turn everything in. I loved this class so much, I want to take his other classes!
The truth is out there and Professor Braatz has the answers . Don't even hesitate to take him for history. You read a lot but its' so worth it. You don't have tests or midterms. Just read the two chapters a week, participate in the DB's and lectures, and you got yourself more knowledge in 8 weeks than 12 years in regular school. Take his class.
My differing views caused him to threaten me with a C grade at midpoint. If I could include all his personal emails to me and the dozens and dozens of my posts he deleted, I would. He wants conformity, not discussion. Went to Dean multiple times and got the A I deserved. DB's were fun went he wasn't deleting everything he didn't like.
This professor was an alright choice for History 17. The workload is intense from the start, so I would say this class is not for everyone. There were no exams in this class at all. In addition, if you are a hard worker and on top of your work then this class is for you. If you are a student that slacks, than this class is not for you at all.
Professor Braatz brings a new light to history. It is a fairly easy class, just a lot of reading and writing. His lectures are funny and interesting. The text shows a different view of history and is long, but worth the read. He doesn't grade by a point system, but rather decides your grade at the end of the semester. Lots of extra credit available
Easy class, easy A. Braatz is definitely one of the more solid history teachers Ive had as a student. He makes his lectures very clear and offers plenty of extra credit. Lots of homework however, 1600+ words per week for two assignments and discussion boards. Stay on top of it and youll get an A. Contribute to the discussion boards every day.
This class was great and passed with a grade I was happy with but I took this course in 8 weeks and it was so much reading and writing. You cannot do the weekly assignments without reading which takes about 1 1/2 sometimes. Then the assignments have to be 800 words at least, it's heavy at first but you will get used to it. No tests in this class!
want to reach him? impossible! Doesn't reply to emails for a long time. He doesn't care about the students. I have no idea how he is a teacher. This is my last semester in college. Worst professor I have seen!
Each week consisted of 2 discussion boards from his lectures, and 2 800 word chapter questions on weekly chapters. The work was overloaded for anyone taking more than one online class. He also doesn't believe in grades, so your grade comes at the end.
Professor Braatz is an amazing teacher who forces you to learn United States history. His lectures are easy to read and understandable. I've never learned more from a history class in my life. His difficulty is a straight up 2. Literally just do the homework and get an A in the class. Don't do the discussion board on the day it's due.
I took Hiss 22, eight weeks course. In the beginning, I thought it might be hard for me precisely because English is my second language, and I am not a fan of history. But I end up falling in love with this course; a lovely lecture, no textbook, no test, only essay, and discussion. He has a great sense of humor, and I highly recommend him.
I really loved Professor Braatz! I am a dyslexic student and even though his reading was very heavy like literally, the whole class was just reading, I loved it. He brings history to a very fun and real place and I learned a lot of things I didn't know before taking his course. Also, there are no tests. He is gods gift to teaching
He taught me valuable things during this course. Participation was mandatory but it was so insightful and fun. His lectures were straightforward and easy ! Just do your work, and you'll pass, trust me. As someone with ADHD, he made class so fun.
Professor Braatz teaches history as it happened, not how the white men who control the American history narrative want us to believe it happened. Eye opening for a lot of students and so refreshing to have a professor who tells us the truth.
Although Prof. Braatz gives an immense amount of homework for 8 week classes, it is very doable and helps with writing and reading skills. The textbook that was provided was extremely interesting and he cares about his students actually learning something. If you dont want to work for an A, dont take him. If you want to learn, hes amazing.
This class was NO JOKE on the workload. 2 Essays are due every week, must be over 800 words each, as well as a discussion board. The lectures were entirely through online power points, and roughly 30 pages each, which is a ton of reading. Per week, I spent roughly 10+ hours doing the work for this class. I don't recommend if you dont have time.
This is one of my most favorite classes I've ever taken. I took the short 8-week course and it was super important to get work done on time. There were no exams or tests. He's pretty funny and at first, I assumed he was unapproachable but he is very understanding and easy to contact. Textbook chapters were provided by him. Definitely recommend!
At first the workload was intimidating, but I learned so much from this course. There is a lot of reading, but its actually interesting and not lame like every other history class Ive taken. 2 discussion boards and 2 800 word responses a week. Very cool guy. Take this class! You can get an A! ps theres no quizzes or exams :)
Absolutely loved this prof. We had 0 quizzes and tests and were graded on understanding of material and discussions. I was actually very sad to have this class end because I enjoyed it so much.
TAKE HIM!!! AMAZING! easy class , easy A. 4 assignment a week, 2 discussion post and a 800 word summary of history book he provides. I BS alllll papers. Got full credit every time. NO TESTS! NO FINALS! DEFINITELY WOULD TAKE AGAIN, supper easy class and easy to follow
I took his 8-week course. There were written lectures and book reading. 2 800-word papers a week. If you put in the work, you'll get an easy A. He'll usually grade assignments quickly and answer emails within a day or two. There are also no tests or finals, which is a big plus.
One of the best classes I've ever taken. Prof. Braatz is very understanding and a great professor. His lectures are hilarious and if you read all the content and follow the assignment criteria, you'll do just fine. The textbook is also a great choice. Definitely recommend!!
Locks grade & you can't see your grade until it's posted at the end of the semester. Provides lectures through a slideshow that aren't too bad then you must read from the book he provides 30 pages or more. You have to be super engaged in the discussion boards & for every chapter in the book he will ask two questions to write 1,000 word summary on.
Great Professor, took the 8 week History 17 class online. There is a lot of reading and writing. You would have the usual 2 questions per week about the reading and you must give a 400 word response to each question, free online version of the book is provided by him, on top of that you must participate in discussion boards, not a hard class.
Braatz is a great professor! He provides all the reading materials you'll need. Doesn't believe in tests or exams so as long as you read the material and participate throughout the week on the discussion boards you'll do great! Such an interesting class! Loved it! Take it
Super easy teacher. Extra Credit videos you can watch and write about. There's reading every week and you write 4 short summary paragraphs answering questions. There's audiobooks on YouTube for the book. Super funny, caring, and knowledgeable professor. Easy A. Loved the style of the class and professor Braatz so much I took History11 too.
This class was great and an Easy A! Took his 8 week course. 2 DBS and 2 Chapter Assignments a week. Final assignment is an essay based off what you've learned. No tests or quizzes! Professor Braatz was amazing and so funny! He grades based off completion/effort rather than accuracy. He grades quickly too. Highly recommend any class taught by him!
I have never been interested in history, but within the first lecture, I was hooked. He is seriously a great professor and is really dedicated to having you understand the real history of America. I took the 8 week online course. Two discussion boards and 2 assignments per week. It is doable, but requires a lot of time to write :)
He's a great professor, so knowledgeable & passionate about history. No tests but a lot of reading & an 800-word essay due each week. He requires several DB posts throughout the week & is quick to dock participation points over word count. It's a time-consuming class, for sure, but I learned a ton. He's one of the best teachers I've ever had!
This was the first time I was interested in history. You don't know your grade while taking the class until the end. I think it's for the better. His lectures are easy to understand and makes them interesting to read. The hardest part is reading 30+ pages twice a week. Every week you do two discussion posts and two reading summaries.
I had no idea this was an 8-week class, so I was caught off-guard by the amount of work I had to do. Overall, the class wasn't that bad, just get ready to read. I used audiobooks on both SoundCloud and YouTube to get through the readings. The lectures were good and were pretty funny. Extra credit was straightforward. Don't procrastinate the class.
Professor Braatz is very involved! He always takes part in DBs and makes weekly announcements. I've taken US History and Peace Studies w/ Braatz, and it's clear he's more passionate about Peace Studies. He wants you to actually learn the material, not only learn it to be tested on. So, there's no quizzes or tests, only writing assignments and DBs.
He is very active in the discussion boards & gives feedback there. He is very passionate. However, he is a bit pretentious & uses his own book as the textbook. He provides no feedback on the weekly essays, I worked extremely hard on 4-point essays in hopes he would like it since there is NO GRADING SYSTEM. I never knew if my work was good enough.
I took this as an eight week course, it is a lot of work. It is a very politically inclined class and the professor will grade off of that. It focuses on how social views rather than economic. The 8-week course includes two 800 word essays, two long discussion posts, and six in depth replies weekly. There is really great content within the class.
Get ready to do the exact same format of two 800 word essays and two long discussion posts with 6 replies every single week. Talks about how this class is supposed to make you actually learn but doesn't actually try to teach at all.
History 17 with professor Braatz was my favorite class of all time! The workload was heavy but it did not feel like it because everything was so interesting. He comments and responds to students on discussion boards and the lectures are clear and thought provoking. I learned so much in this class and I would 100% recommend taking his classes.
Very passionate teacher and very interesting lectures!
If you plan on taking the condensed course, then time management is super important. Lots of effort is needed in this course but I personally felt it was worth it as Braatz cares a lot ab making sure that students actually read & understand his content. His teaching style is also amazing and he is very cooperative to speak with.
I thought a lot of the lectures were interesting, but the amount of homework was unbelievable. I genuinely couldn't keep up with the work on top of my other classes. His grading was extremely harsh. Almost every assignment was out of 4 points so it was extremely easy to fail most assignments. I've never received an F in my life until this class.
You'll be reading about 120 pages of combined lectures and textbook readings. Then writing about 2,200 words combined for the assignments and discussion posts weekly as well. Really strict on the discussion posts, you have to respond to people multiple times a week, can't respond the day it's due.
Professor Braatz's HIS17 class is intense but worthwhile. The workload is heavy, with weekly essays and discussions, but the content is engaging. I found unstuckstudy ai helpful for managing the workload alongside other study tools.
Prof Braatz is a really great professor if you actually care about the class. I am a history major, so I enjoyed it alot. If you dont like history, this isnt the professor for you. If you get your work done and actually listen to what he says, you will succeed and learn so much more than you think He is unbiased and overall great!
I took Perspective of Peace Studies with Prof. Braatz and enjoyed the class. His lectures were interesting and work was heavy but consisted of Diss. Boards and an essay every week. As long as you make time for the work, you'll pass (no tests!). Doing the work wasn't too bad because of how interesting the readings were and I learned a lot.
Entertaining professor with an interesting take on history. However, there is not a set rubric on assignments. Discussion board was a guessing game in terms of how many responses you had to do (Same with the final) Each week had 2 discussion posts and 2 800 word papers. Had to drop another class in order to have enough time to take his.
This professor has a God complex and runs his online courses like he expects them to be your whole life. The amount of work and amount of time he expects you to spend logged in and commenting on his discussion boards is ridiculous.
People typically take this thinking it will be easy and less work. You cannot take this course if this is your mindset, this is why people are rating it on the lower end. If you are genuinely interested in the study of peace take this class, im a philosophy major and found it interesting and enjoyable. A lot of the material we read is imo engaging.
HIST 22 is a pretty straight forward and relatively easy accelerated course. Assignments were due twice a week. Homework consisted of reading about 30 pages of Howard Zinn and replying to two questions in essay format with a requirement of 800 words. You also were required to read a lecture and reply/respond to classmates. Pretty easy, no tests.
The amount of course work for this class,(Hist17) is ridiculous! The hours spent reading and writing essays and participating on the discussion boards to not even get full credit is very discouraging. It felt like a full time job taking this class as the professor has unrealistic expectations of his students and is so full of himself. Stay away!
I would keep on getting low grades like on discussion boards he would want us to reply to two other students but would give a low grade because I didn't participate enough, he doesn't give a grading chart making it impossible to know what he wants us to do. He doesn't seem to care for his students for the criticism he gives.
Do not take his class unless if you are barely taking any classes and have a lot of free time. You are expected to write 1600 words a week (each question HAS to be at least 400 words) and you have to do 2 discussion boards which are easy BUT you need to literally post something like everyday of the week...
never again
This is one of the most caring teachers I've had in a while. He is super passionate about peace and justice studies and history, and makes the curriculum super accessible even though there is a lot of content. This was definitely one of those courses where there was a ton of writing and reading, but I genuinely learned a lot because of the workload.
Genuinely a rewarding class. He's super passionate about peace and justice. There's one free book all the reading comes from, and while it is A LOT, I still apply what I learned years later. It's a lot of writing and reading, but if you want to be more politically aware, this class is it. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU PROCRASTINATE. Favorite class ever
Excessive writing every single week and extremely harsh grading. Treated a junior college class like an upper-level university course. Shows no understanding or regard for students juggling full-time jobs and other classes. Even criticized posts submitted later in the week but still before the deadline.
Despite it being a though class I loved it. He's really passionate and I like his apporach on history. He does disccusion boards pretty differently than most professors which was refreashing. Honestly if you're stuck on how to answer the initial questions just expand on other peoples posts and you can get a decent grade. Braatz is awesome.
There is a lot of writing involved along with collecting evidence from the reading. I recommend this class if you prefer learning about the undermining reason of US history instead of the who when where and what. Engagement in discussions matters. And from what you do decide to do, you learn a good amount. I recommend, Timothy is a caring teacher.
He pushes politics on his students even though this class CLEARLY has nothing to do with that. While disagreeing with a student's discussion post not only did was he condescending but even went to the length of saying and I quote "Because you are a citizen here (based on the accident of your birth, I imagine), you assume it's the best country?".
Braatz is one of those professors with a PhD where they have committed so much of their life to this one field of study, they have no choice but to fully drink their own kool-aid or else face a personal existential crisis. As a result, he expects the same from his students and punishes any student who dares to challenge him.
His lectures and hw assignments haven't been updated since at least 2019. He gives as much work as a 5 unit course. NEVER take his class unless you want to be writing 1600 words a week for hw assignments. You also have to post on the discussion boards everyday to get a decent grade.
Class was not treated as a 3 unit class, expect multiple writing assignments a week and no clear grading standards. Assignments had no rubric. Towards the end of the year, Professor became paranoid that all students were using AI.
