Nice man. He is helpful, but you have to go to him and talk to him. Dry since of humor but very smart.
Seriously, I've taken two of his classes and they have been my fave.
Dr. Buckner is by far my favorite professor at Troy! I recommend him to everyone. He is not easy but he's not ridiculously hard either. He is very funny, drinks alot of coffee, and paces the floor the whole time he lectures. He is very helpful and very cute I might add!
Dry wit. gotta love it.
hes a good teacher, all the material he gives is what he expects you to repeat on his tests. good teacher
Essay exams.... horrible. I like the teacher, but those darn exams...
So hot! Great sense of humor that keeps you interested in the history he's teaching! Overall, hard essay tests but class isn't mandatory so just get the study guide!
Dr. Buckner is one of those guys whose political opinion drives the way he thinks and presents materials. This is VERY apprent in the way he presents anything having to do with race and race history (and he connects most things to race history). Overly PC and easily offended in this area, it is better to simply not take him if you can't handle it.
I'm not a huge fan of History, but he makes the class interesting. His notes are just the highlights, so you really need to listen to him. You do learn a bunch from him, tho.
Expert on History of Slavery in the US
Not bad. You really have to go to class to do well bc his exams are almost all essay and he expects you to write about what HE says, not what the book has to say. Essays are NOT bad- He gives you prompts ahead of time so you know exactly what to write about(I made a 99 on Midterm). Only 2-3 exams and NO busy work. I'm taking him again for HIS 1112.
Dr. Buckner is a great teacher. He knows his material and as long as you show up to class and take notes, you will be fine. I wish that most other teachers at this university could be like him. He is challenging, yet your hard work and studying will pay off in the end. Fair grader, cares about the students, and so hot.
Dr. Buckner is a great teacher. He makes me laugh every day without fail. His humor is a little dry, but I love it. He paces back and forth which is distracting at first, but you get used to it and worry when he isn't pacing. I'm in his class currently and having a great time. Take him! He is an interesting, nice guy.
I took Dr. Buckner for US History I and II. He drinks a lot of coffee and paces back and forth, which is a little distracting, but you get used to it. I honestly wasn't a big history fan until taking his classes. He made it fun and interesting. His tests are easy: 10 matching and an essay. If you know the material (and a good BSer) you'll do fine.
Took an online class with. Do not miss ANY assignments. It will largely affect your grade. I had problems obtaining online access during a military PCS move. I was not permitted to turn in the test and assignment late that week. I would have gotten an A had I been able to. Be sure to study and read the material.
Buckner's class is great if you show up, listen, and be ready to laugh. He's very comical and random at times; be prepared for ALOT of pacing and coffee-induced rants. You only have three tests the entire semester, and as long as you listen and make notes, you'll do well.
Dr Buckner is an exceptional teacher. His constant pacing and great humor makes the class a joy to be in. He truly knows his field of study and gives many opportunities for clarification both in cass as well as during his office hours. Hoping that he instructs more history classes so I can take them. Looking forward to buying his book too.
Buckner is an all around great teacher. Take notes and attend class. He won't baby you though if you miss. I'd turn off my phone or make sure that it's on silent while in class because he tends to speed up when he irate. He's very funny and makes the class very enjoyable. :D
Book used only for reading quizzes. Lecture based, test are about your notes. Which you have to take from his lecture. He is random which makes the class entertaining. As long as you pay attention and take notes you will be fine. Also, study guide for exams is 4 essay questns, 2 on test and you write 1.
This guy is great. You think he's a student by the way he acts. He's funny & paces alot. Gets random at some points.
Class was amazing. Bring coffee or something to drink though, he likes to keep the room dark during lectures, and he will call you out for nodding off. Likes book discussions.
avoid if you can because i added my points in his class and he was 10 points off. a whole letter grade it cost me.im very upset with this professor. he also does not communicate with you at all on how you are doing or what you would need to a certain grade
Very good teacher! Fun class. Only need textbook for online quizzes. If you take good notes you will do fine on exams.
I failed this class with another teacher. HATE history. Nothing sticks. Buckner is incredibly amusing and gives interesting lectures that make it easy to take notes and remember the content. Tests consisted of a mid and final w/ 2 of 4 essays that you have a week to prep for. Also online quizzes from a book you have all semester to do & book test.
Dr. Buckner is brilliant. His passion for American History is impossibly contagious. If you want to take a class that you will walk away from with knowledge that you SHOULD have as a college graduate and as an American, as well as a sparked interest in history and politics, then take Dr. Buckner. I am certainly better for having taken his class.
Don't believe the hype. Yes, he's funny but his class is overly complicated. He adds an extra book that you have to read, and get tested on. His online quizzes are difficult and unrelated to the lectures(be prepared to dig through the book for hours). He has power points but they won't do you any good.
I had no interest in history prior to class but Buckner's class almost make me change my major to history. He is so knowledgeable and very helpful if you have questions or any concerns. He is funny and keeps your interest. The online quizzes are a pain but aren't hard. Highly recommend!!
Buckner is very knowledgable; however, he is a know-it-all and your opinions do not matter. He can be very rude and does not care if you do well in his class. Prior to taking his class, I had never made below an A in a history class and I scored an 89 in his class, which he refused to round up. He grades very strict. I would not suggest taking him.
He is a very fun teacher, with easy tests but his homework is a NIGHTMARE!
I learned the most out of this class than any other class. instructor uses passages, media, lectures, and other materials to convey an accurate picture. Definitely worth it
He doesn't take attendance, but if you don't go you MUST get the notes some how. You have chapter quizzes from the book that you do online at your own pace. The midterm and final exam are straight from the lectures. Take a lot of notes and write down everything he says. Great teacher and I am hopefully going to have him again next semester.
Wow, this was the best history class I have ever taken. Dr. Buckner is great. He gives a descent amount of work in a week. He has weekly quizzes but they are not too hard and writing assignments. Seems concerned about the students passing. Loved his class and hope he teaches HIS-1112.
Please go to class. He says at the beginning of the year that he wouldn't take attendance, but you need to go. He assigns quizzes online and they're pretty tough, but passable. You can tell he really does care about teaching. Don't play on your phone, he'll start screaming. Just do what you're suppose to do and you'll pass with flying colors.
I took him for History 1877. Im a visual person, so this class was really tough for me, because he spoke all his points, so yo really have to pay attention to write down the important notes. He is an extremely tough grader. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Dr. Buckner made me interested in history for the first time in my life. He's funny, loud, and very clear about all of the topics he discusses. He doesn't take attendance but don't skip class unless you have to because the exams come straight from lecture notes. Also don't play on your phone or he will point you out. Great teacher, would recommend.
I took an online course that Dr. Buckner was teaching. The overall work was pretty easy, but he didn't give us a class schedule in the syllabus. He literally just told us to check the assignments folder on Monday to see what we had to do. Overall, this is probably the easiest class I have taken yet, but the anxiety is killer.
Attendance is not mandatory but the mid term and final come straight from notes so you HAVE to go. Good teacher, makes things interesting. Will help you if you email him or go see him in his office. Easy to make a good grade if you put in effort.
I took this class online, and I was dreading history. It actually turned out to be pretty interesting, and Dr. Buckner presents other material like videos that are not in the textbook. It's a pretty easy class, but you have to follow the schedule precisely. No extra credit, and no chances if you miss an assignment. I will take another class of his.
He was a great teacher. You will be required to read a lot from the book, as their will be weekly quizzes to go along with each chapter. The quizzes are easy to complete and they are multiple choice . There are no weekly DB posts, but instead there are quickly written assignments to go along w the videos. Midterm and Final are tough.
He was the most hardest professor I had my first semester! If you hate history DO NOT take him!!!!!!!!!
horrible grader. The quiz answers are hard to find and some of the questions have the wrong answers. Will not take again.
Solid choice for history professor.
Dr. Buckner is hilarious. His lectures were the highlight of my freshman year. Take him!
Great lectures. Would have given a five if not for the stupid grading requirements which hinder his class greatly.
He is awesome! Very funny. Only a midterm and final on class notes (make sure to take notes other than what the slides show). If you pay attention and study some you'll be okay. Very understanding if you have serious problems. I very much enjoy this class.
There are a handful of tests and a midterm + final as your grade. If you read and complete the online quizzes diligently, you will pass. This course is a heavy load on top of your other classes so be prepared to work very hard for your grade.
Dr. Buckner made my day every time, his class was the only one i looked forward too. if you pay attention you will pass his class. The grades are midterm, final, as well as the online homework. His class was really enjoyable, and i highly recommend him!
I had him for a 300 level class and we had 4 papers and discussion boards every week or so. The papers were all fairly easy, he gave you the source and plenty of feedback to improve on the next. Discussion boards took maybe an hour depending on the reading. Really sarcastic but wants you to learn and do well. DO NOT touch your phone during class.
Answers are hard to find and quizes are on maps have no idea what to study for the midterm nor does he tell you especially online sheesh!
He was a very fair teacher, You read online and you have about 2 chapters of questions every week, added by a discussion over an hour long video every other week. The homework is not hard but it takes FOREVER to do. The midterm was proctored and hard but thank god the final is not proctored. Overall a solid teacher
Dr. Buckner is hilarious. He is very clear on his grading policy. You MUST go to class to pass
A lot of reading and a lot of remembering of information.
I took Dr. Buckner for HIS-1111 and HIS-1112, only 3 tests all semester, plus one assignment weekly, no extra credit. You don't have to go to class to pass, but he does notice, so if you don't he is a little less forgiving if you need help. He's really funny and his lectures are great. Can be a little brisk, but if you follow rules he's fine.
Professor Buckner was great! This was the first History class I actually enjoyed. He explains the material great, but take good notes! The midterm & final come straight from lecture, but he gives you the essay questions before hand with plenty of time to prepare!! Make sure you go to class because he doesn't post anything online!!
You will have one midterm and one final (each worth a huge chunk of your grade) and some homework that is graded for completion (learning curves) he is the most difficult grader and you take notes from the things that come out of his mouth so skip class you wont pass
I have always loved history but Buckner makes me love it more. The biggest mistake people make with Buckner is not taking thorough notes, I typically walk out of class writing a full page, based on what he says and NOT based on the rough outline. Do not use your phone or he will flip out. Oh and he is very hot. 10/10 would recommend
Dr. Buckner's class was by far one of my favorites. When I had the flu, I was tempted to put on a mask and go to his class but none of the others. He's not a fan of the textbook. His exams are based on his lectures, so it's ideal that you be there. He replies to all his e-mails. Overall, he's funny and makes the course extremely interesting. 5/5.
NO PHONES! He will cancel the whole class and tell you to learn it yourself if he gets distracted. There are only 3 grades in the class and the test are hard.
One of the better instructors at Troy. Will go over the material in great detail. Take notes on everything and will come in handy for the tests.
He pulls his test material straight from the lectures. Its a good thing that his lectures arent boring. He is a great teacher that cares about his students. He rambles, but when he finally gets around to his point, you understand the topic.
Dr. Buckner is my favorite professor Ive had in my almost four years now at Troy. He is funny, extremely smart, and very good at explaining things in way that everyone can understand. Youre going to need to go to class and do the readings, but as long as you do - youll be successful. And yes, he is hot.
Dr. Buckner is stern, but a great lecturer. If you do not learn well from lectures, do not take him. His classes are all lecture, but he is good at it. He is serious but makes funny references during class. FYI you wont be able to cram the night before his exams. You have to pay attention over the semester.
I had Buckner in an online class. I really enjoyed his PowerPoints. He makes them entertaining and rememberable. If you listen to the powerpoints and read the chapter you will easily pass with an A. I'll definitely take him again next term.
He does not specify your word min for his very brief prompt and if you dont write a bunch youll get graded poorly. We're in a pandemic and yet he doesnt get students turn things in just b4 the deadline or late bc of it since he told me I should turn things in earlier even though I have other things in my life to tend to. I didnt like this comment.
I love this man! I might have studied history if I took this class freshman year. It's mostly reading from the book, then you have a quiz and a little assignment on every chapter, some discussion boards, powerpoint lectures, and one proctored exam (midterm). Super woke dude.
the textbook is necessary for your online activities. very funny guy in his lectures. had about 2 chapters a week which was 2 quizzes and two map activities, very very easy. would definitely take again. i took this as a term 2 class.
Forget about extra credit! Little to no information in PowerPoint. Boring lectures!
This class is purely a lecture course only. There is a lot of discussion but he will talk the ENTIRE class. There are not a lot of grades your entire grade will be based on the midterm, a reading exam, and a final. Like 90% of the class failed the midterm so he had to add points to everyone grade. Wouldn't take again
Very good professor. He is passionate about history and knows what he is talking about. You only have 3 test grades, a midterm, a reading test, and a final. but you do have 15 chapter quizzes that are easy. He's very funny but you will not pass the class if you don't show up and take good notes. Taking him again this semester for US after 1877.
He is very funny and I love his lectures. His test are hard and you only have three. You also have quizzes but those are online and you can do them at home. The best history teacher I've ever heard but I didn't learn anything.
Dr. Buckner's class is easy, but his tests are harder. He gives 3 major tests; a midterm, reading, and final exams. He doesn't require textbooks, but you do need a code to take the weekly tests online, they are easy, just look them up. He is a great and funny guy, but his notes are not the best, so listening is a must! Would highly recommend thou!
Lectures are engaging and funny! He covers material in a way that is easy to understand and take notes on. Beware the midterm and final, though: he grades kind of harsh. The class is easy, but prepare thoroughly for the tests or you'll be caught off guard.
Dr. Buckner is a funny guy, however, his lectures were clearly recorded while teaching an in-person class so they can be confusing when he talks about drawing things out for them. His assignments are based off the lectures and slides, not the book. The tests (and there are many) are easy.
The way he talks keeps class interesting.
He is great and lectures in a nice way. This class you have to pay attention to his lectures. You have quizzes you can find quiz lets for but the midterm and final are solely on your understanding on the lectures. If you dont pay attention youre screwed. Hes willing to help but if you havent listened he literally wont care. Take good notes.
Attendance is required, but it's worth it, he reads off a PowerPoint but goes into grave detail about each subject, and he knows the material and relates it to good examples. Office hours for Final and Midterm help, he GIVES you what you need to know. Make the effort to take interest in the class and put the phone down in class.
Fun class with a good instructor. The proctored midterm bombed my grade and made it virtually impossible to recover with an A. One quiz and one test for each chapter, with usually two chapters a week. Four papers that are fairly easy to tackle if you watch the PowerPoint lecture. He is a nice instructor, but just get ready to put some work in.
You only have three tests that count as 25% and weekly quizzes that count as 10% of your grade. So if you failed the midterm you had to fight really hard to pass the class. His notes are hard to follow and he grades extremely hard.
Take notes every day. Give him your full attention, no phones, and no side convos or else he will get mad and take it out on the whole class. He ended class a couple of times because one student wouldn't pay attention. For midterm/final write out the essays and review them with him before test day because he's looking for specific information.
Amazing professor would definitely recommend to take. He keeps the class alive with tying life experience to the lecture making it easier to understand. Would definitely take again!!
His class is based on lectures, and you are responsible for taking decent notes. His lectures are interesting and entertaining. There are only 3 major tests in his class along with assignments every week. I wouldn't take his class if you have no interest in history because you have to pay attention. I loved this class and I will be taking him again
Great teacher, you do HAVE to attend class as his midterm/final isn't based on what the book says but rather what HE says. Pay attention and it'll be a breeze. Other than midterm/final you have a reading exam on a book (free), and learning curves + attendance.
READ ME! Avoid this professor! High ratings are misleading; most of them are due to him being "funny" or "entertaining." He's terrible at teaching, gives choppy presentations, you won't know what to study because as he said "it's a secret". He has a terrible temper. Forgettable material and regurgitative teaching style. His charisma means nothing!
LOVE this professor! enjoyed lectures. Have to attend class and take good notes. Pay attention or no way to do well! HW 15%,Midterm 25%,Reading Exam 25%,Final Exam 25%,and Attendance 10% of grade. midterm and final both 10 matching ?s and an essay. Gives 4 prompts to prepare for and then 2 of those to pick one to write for test.Set up for success!
If you take his online class prepared to be frustrated. His grading makes no sense, one discussion was fine then another he marked off because I didn't explain everything he wanted despite it being opinion based. Also he gives NO study guide. Just tells you to do the homework over and over. Awful.
Anybody considering this class DON'T take it. I have never had issues with a professor and this professor was constantly trying to embarrass me in-front of the class. He is tyrannical, egotistical and on top of that one of the most boring lecturers I've ever had. I'm a very loving person but I despise this man.
Dr. Buckner is a great History professor. Really knows his stuff!
Purchase of book was pointless. He only goes off of information that comes from his mouth. Not a fair grader and hard to listen to. Very boring
Buying the book was pointless. The only information that matters is what comes from his mouth. Difficult grader and hard to listen to lectures; very boring!
Dr. Buckner cares about his students, grades fairly, and provides ample feedback. His graduate class requires the willingness to analyze content and connect the reading material to understand concepts rather than rote knowledge. Quick to respond to emails, guiding meaningful discussions.
Take Dr. Buckner for an online course if your goal is to learn and discuss with an expert in the field.
