Very good, but biased in his views.
Good professor, helps to trying to explain work but just rambles on and give

Helpful when you know what to ask. Very clear, and extremely intelligent.
A great teacher. One of the nicest and most intelligent on campus.
Really great, but not always clear what he wants. Nice guy.
He is a great teacher and he clearly explains what he wants. He is willing to help. He is a great teacher
Very close minded when dealing with class opinion. It's his point of view or nothing....he's not willing to listen to ideas!
Very closed minded...
Treats his students like little children.Doesn't explain very well, thinks you should know what he wants.Thinks his class is the ONLY class a student is taking. He needs to knows his material but needs to rethink his actions toward his class.
Great guy. Smart, articulate, champions students.
On papers, writes all this stuff about how you did wrong, but does not explain what he is looking for or how to fix it. Tooooo strick on attendence even if you get stuck in the Buskirk Elevator and were late to class by like 2 mins. Ok guy though.
I got two things to say about this guy: first, he knows his stuff, especially John Milton. I can honestly say I learned more in my Milton class than anything else I've taken in 2 years at Marshall. However, the man does not think subjectively (contd)
Dr. Burbery is a great teacher when you finally figure out what he wants and his tendencies. His class is tedious, but not meaningless. This class definitely preps you for a writing intensive class. Nice guy and good teacher. not biased

Doesn't like athletes...All athletes whether football..basketball...track....beware....but nice man..No hard feelings just good clean fun right?
He knows his material, but isn't very understanding. Assigns assignments and doesn't explain them very well. Good luck in this class.
His class is very interesting and he goes over very well what is expected!!!!!You wont find an easier professor.

Very intimidating @first.Lots of homework, but you can make an A. Do not miss class-it would be too hard to catch up. He is rather set in his opinions and it shows a little on papers. But in discussion, he loves to hear student interpretations of text.
Cool teacher and he helps out a lot. He has conferences just with you and him; tries to point out bad tendencies that you might have. You CAN'T MISS this class or else you will get way behind.Just show up and put your best into your work.Revising a lot.
Dr. Burbery is a very helpful teacher. As long as you do your work it should not be hard to get an A. Class discussions everyday and you must participate. Only 2 papers and a writing journal, not too bad for writing intensive class! Not a bad class!
Very retarded teacher. Isnt fair. Is completely wrapped up in his reading. He overdoes everything. He reads far too far into things. Makes it complicated when its straight forward. This guy isnt hard....just makes class you spend with him so tough.
Wants specifics! Good teacher for an intro class. Seems as if he'd be very good in tougher courses.
Good lord!! this isn't theater class!! When we were reading macbeth he wants you to act it out and he actually grades you on how you read!! WTF?!? I thought that he was kinda hot, but at the same time he is very unclear about his assignments and I wish that I had not taken this course! It bites!
He is a very intelligent man, but I don't think that he understands that everyone writes differently. His comments are a bit facetious, and I'm not sure why he grades papers so harshly. He also will assume that his class is your ONLY class, so be prepared. Lots of boring, useless discussion.
This man is very hypocritical. He claims to be a devout Christian, yet judges his students based on how they look. He then carries his personal feelings into the grading of your papers and makes rude, spiteful (and pointless) comments. Abandon all hope ye who enter his class.
Didn't agree with a single word he said in terms of Paradise Lost, but the man knows his stuff--there's a reason he has a degree in John Milton studies. Be prepared, though, for the workload from hell. Personable guy, too. Had him for class three years ago, and he still knows my name.
Pretty good professor. Has interesting things to say. A little picky in the grading, but doesn't always specify what is wrong in the paper (just puts an X at the end of the line and relies on you to figure it out yourself).
If he's going to take points off for mistakes in MLA formatting, he should really know what MLA formatting entails. Arrogant man, ridiculous self-indulgant grading method. Managed to make The Lord of the Rings torture. Very frustrating experience as a student.
Seems nice enough, but grading is ridiculous. . . i feel like he grades based only on HIS interpretation of what you read. HELLO, not all of us have studied this stuff for years. We don't know all the background!! Material is interesting, but the papers we have to write are harshly graded. Never had such a hard time in an english class
One of the best professors I've had. Knows what he's talking about, wants to help, and clearly outlines what one must do to get an A, B, C, etc. Does his best to make material approachable and interesting. Definite believer in putting out the material and letting the student do the rest. Fantastic experience.
Total jerk. Went through personal issues and missed a lot of class. Didn't care and wasn't at all understanding of my situation. One of the worse professors I've had.
Structure of class is well-organized, clear direction for assignments is offered and he is very knowledgable in his subject matter. While on the surface, he seems like an all right guy, he has an air of snobbery about him. Comments on student work are more degrading than helpful and he is notorious for starting class early.
I found Dr. Burbery to be very intelligent, and passionate. He's very clear on what he expects from his students, and gives back papers quickly with ample commentary. I'm a second-semester sophomore and his class has been my favorite so far. He's not a glorified high school teacher, like most professors; Dr. Burbery is the real deal. I highly reco
Dr. Burbery is one of the most intelligent and passionate professors at Marshall. I'd highly recommend him. Very helpful in and out of class, and has a great personality.
Dr. B is a very good professor and he lets you know exactly what he wants from you. Also, he's not boring.
One of my favorite teachers @ Marshall. The work can be challenging, but he always tells you exactly what he expects. Great class, great teacher!!
Dr. Burbery is a very good professor. He's clear with what he expects of you, and he's very smart, so you learn a lot from him. I'd highly recommend him to anyone considering his classes. A +
Not the easiest, but still the best professor I've ever had at marshall. He will go out of his way and do anything he can to help you. Gives guidelines for exactly what you will be graded on in your papers. I don't like english classes, but I actually liked this one!
Nice man, yet he's a little nerdy. Willing to help you by looking at papers BEFORE turning them in which is beyond helpful. I got an "A" but I worked for it.
Nice professor. Willing to help with papers BEFORE turning them in. The class is a littel tricky. There is a lot of reading material. He expects you to do your part and do the best you can.
Incredibly close-minded, just wants you to regergitate his beliefs about literature-even though the assignment asks for your opinion as long as you support it. Maybe a little too religiously biased, as well. If you take him, you will learn, but you will be bitter, angry, and exhausted by the end of the semester, too.
Excellent professor. Will look at your paper several times before you turn it in and actually comment on it. Yes his classes are challenging (don?t expect to sail through this if you don?t do your work) but I enjoyed every class and I felt like I really learned a lot. Would take every class he teaches, if I could.
Dr. Burb is very good. He knows what he's talking about, he explains it well, and he will make you a better writer and a better thinker. Sometimes if you read an article differently than he, you're wrong, but if you support it well, he'll still recognize that. Best of all, he will talk to you about ANYTHING and help you how he can. Great Prof.
Lot of writing but he's extremely helpful with papers and we do final revisions in class before handing them in to him. Makes the subject interesting even to students who don't care for the subject. We've learned a lot from him. Sometimes a little too religious, but disagreeing with him is ok.
WOW, really...... don't take him. If you have to, then drop it. If you can't do that, then make everything extremely long and grammatically correct.
. I think this man's sheer pleasure is to make students feel like idiots. He is very insulting, and I think he enjoys belittling people. I would rather drop out of school than take this man again.
Extremely difficult professor. He focuses on negatives in every assignment. He grades way too harshly! He is a nice guy, but prepare to work really hard in this class in you want a B .. I'm not sure he even gives A's ...
He ruined Tolkien for me. The class topics were often bogus or a waste of time. Also, the class is a lot of work. If writing and MLA are not your strength, consider another class. He is very nit-picky in grading and very few students get A's.
Took for British Lit. Burbery isn't TOO bad; he gives lots of easy As in Homework/Quizzes to buff your grade. However, when it comes to essays, the man is very opinionated. Don't disagree with his opinions or he will tear your argument apart. However, if you are a good writer and basically agree with everything he says you will get an A.
I have undergone three courses under Dr. Burbery. The first two I detested. However, this course I absolutely adored. He was pleasant, understanding, and motivating. Now, My papers still could not be oo critical of his views. However, I learned so much. Even now - five months later - I am still comparing things to Paradise Lost.
Dr. Burbery is one of my favorite professors at MU. I changed my major to literature after taking two of his courses for fun. Very helpful with any issues you may have with writing papers. Do not take if you are looking for an easy A. There is no such thing in this class- you will work! You do learn a LOT about Milton & other writers, though.
Dr. Burbery is a good teacher. Make sure you pay attention and speak up in class to help your participation grade. Always do the homework. If you do that, you should be fine
Dr. Burbery is a nice guy but not a very good teacher. His directions for papers are miss leading and he contradicts himself when reviewing and giving final grades on your papers. He gives you homework literally every class and even gave us home work twice over Thanksgiving break that we had to email him. Over all his class isn't hard but is a pain
Too much busy work was given in this class. None of it seemed relevant
Dr. Burbery is a nice enough guy, but his teaching is miserable. Expect A LOT of useless busy work. His lectures are redundant. His paper instructions and rubrics are murky at best. He uses student-generated quiz questions which are VERY VERY hard to understand. I would not recommend taking this professor unless you absolutely need to.
This guy is very smart, but because the class is sort of an overview of schools of critical theory, he is often confusing. His tests are abominably hard and he is a very picky grader. Does not come across as approachable, but is willing to talk to you.
Dr. Burbery expects a lot from students, but is a great guy! He is a tough grader but wants you to do the best that you can. He allows multiple revisions on papers. Do not take this class if you are looking for an easy A. It is a difficult class, but I learned a ton.
Dr. Burbery is an engaging teacher who is clear about his expectations. I've taken more than one of his courses, and I enjoyed the work and the time in class in every instance. I always learned a lot, often in surprising ways.
Interesting class. Dr. Burbery has a lot of knowledge and enthusiasm for what he's teaching. He does assign quite a few papers, but he works with you and gives many opportunities for improvement. Would definitely take him again.
He's a pretty nice guy but honestly he's very into himself. If you are taking him for critical theory be prepared to skip anything remotely feminist or lgbtq. After learning 3 or 4 basic theories in the first couple of weeks prepare to spend the rest of the semester talking about ecocritism.
Due to his wit, abundant knowledge, and genuinely kind nature, Dr. Burbery is my absolute favourite professor. His class is not easy, but it is fair, and he dedicates a considerable amount of time and energy to teaching. He follows his (highly-detailed) syllabus closely, grades on time, and provides enlightening feedback. Highly recommended. :)
I really enjoyed his ENG200 class. Its was based off of science fiction mostly. Very interesting! There are grade fluffers such as 5-10 pt prompts. He is a really good person. I'd definitely take another class of his. DO NOT expect an easy A. You will work for it.
He spits a lot of facts and explains a lot of stuff and most of his information is straight up wrong. All of his work is worth a lot of points so don't miss anything. Likes to prove how smart he is by making students feel stupid.
Dr. Burbery was very poorly spoken, and in an attempt to be "cool" and "hip" would use slurs in class. He gave 100 point assignments almost every day in class. He was unreliable in being in touch outside of classroom hours, and not clear in his grading criteria.
His entire class was on SCIENCE. Like quantum mechancics and. Karly information theory. It was the most confusing thing Ive ever done and if ur not a science lover like me, DONT take this course. He grades tough, but gives opportunity to revise your papers and will bump up a letter grade.
By far the best English professor I have taken. He outlines papers clearly and discusses them in class. Allows rewrites on most papers to help you learn what you are doing wrong and how to fix it. Very big into science, technology, and the environment so most of his classes are centered around that. Would recommend to anyone who wants to learn.
Dr. Burbery is the absolute worst professor I have ever taken. He pushes to squeeze so much material in, in so little time that you have no time to do anything else. He acts like you are only taking his class and no others mater but his own. He refuses to let you do makeup in class assignments even with excused absences. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Very friendly, goofy guy. Lots of out of the box ideas, but that is what makes him fun. Enjoyable class, but you have to read what he recommends or you suffer haha. He enjoys in classs discussions because likes to hear just what you are thinking about. Super fun class that I would recommend.
Dr. Burbery is a very kind and knowledgeable man who tries to know his students. Although he is such a good man, his class is awful. He runs it like a middle school class. He constantly makes us read aloud, do Meaningless work and watch basic videos. Class theme was mythology and geology. There are so many repeated and insanely boring lectures.
Dr. Burbery was an incredible professor. It was very obvious he cared a lot about the students, and wanting them to learn. He will do his best to answer any question that is asked. He is a tough grader, but he allows for rewrites. Be prepared to keep up in his class, he assigns quite a bit of reading, and then has quizzes in class the next day.
He is strict when it comes to grading, and I mean VERY. I didn't learn any English in his class. He focused solely on science and information theory. I have always been good in English, but not science. I didn't do well in the class simply because I didn't understand science. A boy got stuck in the elevator & Tim didn't excuse him from class.
Dr. Burbery is a difficult grader, but the homework and small quizzes are not worth much of your final grade. There are two papers, each worth 30% (and he tends to grade those less harshly). He also drops the lowest 2 quiz/hw grades and allows rewrites on the papers. I recommend this class highly, but you have to work for your grade.
This whole class is science based. Read a lot of books (no textbook though) and way too much info was shoved in to the time frame. I had barely any time to do work for other classes because he always assigned us long sections to read as well as lengthy papers. Cares but does not teach the info well in my opinion.
I was a business major, but I learned more from this class on critical thinking than most of my other classes. He really had his students think outside of the box, and even found ways to have you question your answers just to see a new point of view. One of my favorite, and most engaging classes ever. Prepare to work, but also learn.
Dr. Burbery is obsessed with ecocriticism and Game of Thrones. He consistently refers back to the show when studying Shakespeare. If you do not watch the show, you have no idea what he is talking about. He offers revisions for the papers, but after you revise, he asks you revise it again. He is also very conservative. Holds class over all the time.
Entire class was science based. And not actual science, just 5 minute videos that were incredibly unhelpful. Threw out random facts with no actual evidence. Never expect to be able to make up work. Only forgiving factor is he allows revisions on the 2 papers (total 70% of your grade).
Okay, listen, I dont know what other people may have said about him, but Dr. Burbery is an amazing professor. I have been in his classes twice, passed both, ENG 201 and ENG 412. Will you have work? Yeah. He usually structures his class into 4 papers, however, he is heavy into revision so there is lots of time to make up. I highly recommend.
Dr. B is one of the most committed, passionate professors that I have ever encountered. The class is a lot of work but he gives a chance to rewrite papers and extra credit. Do not understand previous complaint about him including Game of Thrones references - he was just making a modern comparison to the Henry plays - this was never tested.
Dr. Burbery is an excellent professor who really wants his students to learn. He is easy to get along with. He is a difficult grader but as long as you put forth the effort, you'll get a good grade. He also grades class participation so make sure you contribute to the class discussions, which are daily.
Dr. Burbery is fine as a person, but his class is extremely difficult. Being an English major, I knew Shakespeare was hard going into it, but we moved extremely fast way too quickly. Instead of digesting the material, he tried to jam way too much in. I had to drop the class because I did not have the time for it.
I tried giving Dr. Burbery a chance, but he was terrible. He was never available during office hours, his grading criteria was so inconsistent, and he gave a participation grade of 85 even if you spoke in the class everyday. You'll have to work much harder for a grade and taking this class with him isn't worth the aggravation of dealing with him.
I like him as a person but I had more work In his English class than I did in my classes that actually related to my major. He's understanding but we had at least 2-4 tests a week in there. He also grades opinion papers based on his own opinion and he holds over so long he will make you late to your next class.
I do not recommend this professor at all no matter how hard you try you will not get over a B and thats if he likes you. We had 2-4 tests a week plus papers and home work assignments. Im a hardworking student and I will never take his class again.
Honestly I never understood why people don't like him. He can be a bit of a picky grader and some questions he asks on quizzes/assignments can be specific, but honestly he's not a bad teacher. I liked most of the books we read, the discussions were engaging, and he's an interesting person. He allows revisions on papers on gives good feedback.
I really enjoyed my time in Dr. B's class. With the crazy semester due to the pandemic, he did an excellent job. My in-person day was Tuesday while my virtual day was Thursday. He does make you turn your camera on during virtual class, but I didn't mind. It's a lot of reading, but he is very patient and gives chances to revise your papers. 10/10!!!
I absolutely loved my ENG200H class with him. He was tough with grading but always made it a learning experience when given the opportunity to revise your papers. Tests were never hard; almost all of them either open note/book. He makes the class extremely easy to understand and even enjoyable. I looked forward to this class every week!
Definitely one of my favorite classes so far, but I like challenging courses. His class is super fast-paced, but everything ties together in the end. No textbook. He makes you buy a few smaller texts instead. Dr. B is painfully detail-oriented, but, as long as you pay attention and read the material, you will pass.
If you want a challenge, Dr. B is the way to go. I don't like writing papers, don't care for dinosaurs, or anything in the English realm, which is what his class revolved around. However, if you read the content for the mini quizzes and put effort into the papers, you're going to be alright. Heck, he even let's you correct mistakes for more credit.
He very specifically tells you what he wants you to improve on and always gives you a chance to revise your papers. If you make a bad grade in here, it's almost always blatantly your fault. He is very focused on ecocriticism, but he's also excellent at it. You will always learn something, and he's really understanding with personal circumstances.
Dr. Burbery is a pretty tough grader, but not unreasonably so. Go to his office hours! Participate! The material is fun and interesting. There is no leniency on due dates or grading, but he drops the 2 lowest quiz grades at the end of the semester. Put in some effort, and you'll do fine.
I really enjoyed Professor Burbery's lectures and the enthusiasm he showed for concepts covered. He actively encourages class participation, drops 2 quiz scores, and expects his students to give their best. Papers were graded hard, but the given feedback was exceptionally helpful.
Professor Burbery's class is pretty interesting. He focuses a lot on Geomythology and how he ties the book you read in his class into this was really interesting. I just wish he touched on this more because the class felt like it was intentionally staying on only surface elements of this field which meant we kept reviewing the same ideas.
I struggle with writing-heavy classes so I was surprised I enjoyed this one. I took it online and luckily Professor Burbery is great at running classes over Zoom, encouraging participation and building confidence in writing. He is interested in Geomythology which is great angle for tech writing. The materials were useful and assignments clear.
I am an introvert and usually hate classroom engagement, but I feel like in this class Dr. Burbery makes student involvement not feel like a chore. Open discussions in the class are very interesting and he facilitates them well- even if they are irrelevant. He encourages involvement and I feel he genuinely wanted to see us succeed.
Dr. Burbery was nice and easygoing, however, he has some very strange rules, like not being able to use the restroom during class. Also, he taught very elementary topics during class time, but he graded our papers like we were English professors. He incorporated geomythology into the class which was cool, but it took away from the real assignments.
He very often talked about stuff that had nothing to do with the class. This was a scientific and technical writing class, we had to watch videos that talked about how some birds sleep with half their brain and how dogs look north. Very little class time was devoted to actual topics, and when he did talk about English, it was elementary level.
The assignments were fairly easy, but the professor, himself, made them more difficult. If you missed class, you would lose a dramatic amount of points. If you were on your phone or went to the bathroom, he will mark you as tardy, if not absent. The class time was spent looking into topics irrelevant to any homework assignment.
The class is fine. Not good. He spends most of class time lecturing on either near irrelevant topics or basic English.(Spent at least two full classes on semicolons). The assignments are easy, so are the papers (there's 2), but his quiz questions are abysmal and often either vague, or flat out incorrect. One of the toughest graders I've ever had.
So very dry, extremely boring in class. The material chosen is okay, except Asimov. Extremely tough grader. His study guides are useless. All the study guides are is "here's the material that could be on the test" without identifying specific things, such as putting just a random list of terms without definitions.
I love Dr. B! He lets you revise papers for a higher grade and gives super helpful comments. Sometimes the class can feel repetitive but he is also fun and will let the class have debates. Is also 100% willing to work with you outside of class to help you pass. Overall a super nice and caring professor. Just make sure to turn you papers in on time!
He is - contrary to popular opinion - my favorite professor at Marshall. Though he is a tough grader, he really pushes you to do better. He also gives great feedback on what can be changed for the better. I really have enjoyed all the classes I've had with him. He is quite traditional, but I enjoy that!
(ENG 215 wasn't on option to click) I really loved Dr. Burbery's class, especially after disliking my hs English courses. He gives revision opportunities and isn't a super harsh grader. We read A LOT outside of class (the course was Good Novels), but the books were mostly enjoyable. As long as you understand basic grammar, Dr. B's class rocks.
The professor has some unconventional rules, but the class is engaging. Discussions can veer off-topic, but Burbery facilitates them well. The writing assignments are challenging, though unstuck study helped me prep efficiently.
If you aren't used to large chunks of reading at once, this will be a very hard class. He is very picky about grammar and punctuation! However, he is understanding and loves hearing creative ideas and questions.
Dr. B is enthusiastic about the material, although his lectures can often feel unfocused and unnecessary. He is caring and understanding about student challenges and is willing to work with students to find solutions. He often uses group work. Much of his class is guided discussion. He can be somewhat absent-minded and unorganized.
