pointless assignments and is trying to teach the RIGHT way to learn
grades really hard. doesn't help you if you go to his office. Answers questions with answers.
A great guy.Very nice and vry helpfull.
Carens is interesting and laid-back, with a really great approach to english. I came into his class HATING english, still got good grades although i had to work my butt of for them. I can not believe how much my writing skills improved, worth the effort
Hard, Hard, Hard, Hard!
He is extrememly hard and unclear. You must go to his office if you expect to do well on your papers. He does answer questions with new questions to get you to think. If you do not like to think then don't take him.
He's a good teacher. He runs a little over with his lectures, but if you pay attention and read the material you will do fine!
Yes he's hard, but he keeps things interesting. If you want an easy class take someone else, but if you want to be challenged and interested take carens. He's the best english teacher i've had in years.
Needs to lighten up. He said he was from Harvard but doesn't realize that he is no longer there.
HARD!!! And not a fair grading system! If you are a good writer, take it. If not, GO AWAY!
He's a great guy and very helpful. He is definitely a hard teacher, but if you do the work, you will come out of his class with a lot. Expect to do a LOT of writing and a LOT of thinking though.
He has a bit of a bad rep but don't listen... he's harmless. The class is easy by no means, but it will make you think and he is MORE than willing to help you in any way he can...just drop by his office. I'm not an english person at all and escaped w/ a B
Tough teacher. Bad attitude. Stuck on the fact he went to harvard--expects you to write like you did. Lots of work.
Tough class but totally worth it. Carens is a great guy and very helpful as long as you do the work you're supposed to do. There is a good bit of hmwrk, but it all leads into the essays u have to write. And you HAVE to go to class!!
Interesting guy, that's for sure. But anyway...the text selction isn't the most interesting, but the discussions are great. A tad hard grader.
He is slack on the amount of office hours and does not try to have them for the betterment of his students. He also is very vague on describing and even helping you with your writing assignments but will grade them harshly.
Goodish. I made a B on every paper over 2 semesters. Usually 1 typed page homework every class. No real tests just in-class essays. He says he wants you to visit him in his office to read your papers before you turn them in, I never did, though.
Great prof. Had his class for 3 semesters. Helpful, challenging, demanding, worth it. Mandatory attendance & tough tests, but easy papers.
Extremely knowledgable in his field; extremely well-heeled in his presentation. Not a riveting lecturer, but always one who will refuse to let you get complacent about your own thoughts & work.
A Great guy, and extremely knowledgeable. Wants his students to think, as opposed to regurgitating facts.
i love him ! although the material can be a bit boring (but come on, its not his fault) he encourages everyone to talk and think in class. if you go to his office hours and discuss papers before you turn them in you will surely do well. the tests are hard, but not impossible if you read.
Carens is ok, but a bit boring. The class gets a bit repetitive at times (read poem, analyze in class, discuss, rinse and repeat). He's awesome at close reading and writes intelligent critiques of your papers, though, so he's got that going for him. Take him if there's no one better available.
Literature of the British Empire was very interesting but if you are not an English major I would not recommend taking this class. He is very flexible with deadlines and his tests are all essay that are fairly easy. The major part of his class is discussion- If you enjoy discussing literature than this class would be good for you. I got a B.
Took him for a very boring class which he, in addition to a hilarious amount of in-class discussion, made into a semi-interesting one. Advice? GO TO HIM for essay help -- he will make EVERYTHING clearer and you are nearly guaranteed an "A" if you just ask him for some assistance. What a great guy
This was the WORST prof. I ever had in college. He thinks he is a genius and does not allow for personal style in papers. His "helpfulness" is basically telling you how he would do it, and if you don't change your paper you are screwed. DROP HIS CLASS IF YOU EVER GET STUCK WITH HIM!
Prof Carens is passionate about Brit lit, so if youre not into deep and intellectual conversation about literature - this class is not for you. However, he is amazing at what he does and is very helpful withpapers. He always tells youwhat he wants from any assignment and is willing to give extra guidance anytime. Plus his sense of humor is classic!
The class was interesting, but pretty difficult. Dr. Carens is brilliant and loves class discussion, so be prepared. He didn't give that many assignments throughout the semester, but he will tell you exactly what he expects for each assignment. Bottom line, be prepared for class and do the readings. His sense of humor is priceless.
Dr. Carens is a wonderful professor; he loves his subject. He is very willing to discuss paper topics and the works he presents in class. Do your reading and he appreciates students who come up with their own views/ideas on the works. Take him, you'll love his humour - if you pay attention.
I thought he was a great proffessor and I learned A LOT about analyzing poetry from him. I really enjoyed his class.
Dr Carens is so intelligent and well-read.. he is also very good at supplying his students with every tool to make the grades. He is always available for help with papers (which I recommend you take him up on). And personally I dont know why his man doesnt have a tamale! I love Brit lit.. but I love Dr Carens more.. haha
He must be rating himself with all these great, well-written reviews! He is hard, rude, and stuck up--plain and simple. He will quickly let you know he went to Harvard undergrad (but not grad school) and therefore knows more than you ever possibly could. Professors like him really turn people away from English, which isn't right.
Great teacher, not particularly easy, but not excessively difficult. Requires few assignments, and guidelines are always well dictated and clear. Push-over for paper extensions etc. genuinely concerned with your ideas and oppinions. nice.
awesome teacher but he will make you work so if your lazy like me you might have to put in a little extra effort. But he'll make it worth your while.
most pointless class ever. not a nice man. only 4 papers and no final but attendance is mandatory and nothing happens in class. dont take on tues/thurs.
He's an alright teacher but he thinks he is doing you a favor by teaching you. He went to Harvard and has a Harvard attitude. His assignments are garbage and you have to think a certain way to do well.
Good professor, does seem to have a passion for the subject and wants students to do well. Refuses to admit when he is wrong. Caused a delay in the grading of my final paper until after end of the semester and gave me an attitude when I asked him when I could expect my grade. Never told me what the grade was.
Very passionate about his subject material. Interested in promoting class discussions. Hard test grader, fair essay grader. Go to his office to look over your paper before it is due and he will tell you what to correct. Recommended if you have a wide vocabulary and a preference for tall blonds.
He is horribe...entirely not qualified...I was upset with his class and Im an english major..
Mr. Carens is actually an extremely intelligent guy, and really passionate about what he teaches. His essays aren't pointless AT ALL like someone said. I took him for my first english of college and I hate papers but he's helpful and does care about the students if they show that they care about the class. His class isn't easy, but he's a great guy
Prof Carens is a great, but you have to do the work. He never mentioned that he went to Harvard to our class, and he was never pretentious. Although I can't ever seem to get above a B in his class, I enjoy his rhetoric, and would strongly recommend anyone who loves British Literature! He's really funny, and makes things interesting!
I loved this class. He explains the assignments very clearly and answers all questions. He got the whole class involved in discussions and is very personable and easy to relate to. I feel he has his students best interest in mind and he knows what he is talking about. I dont feel that this class is a waste of time at all.
Never seem stck up to me and also never mentioned he went to Harvard. He is hard if you want an A. I cant seem to get that A. He really encourages discussion in class and is open to your opinion. Overall Good Class. JUST READ.
Dr. Carens is awesome. He's very intelligent and very funny. He makes class very interesting, and discussion is great. I highly recommend that no English major leave the College without taking Dr. Carens. Do the reading, go to class prepared, and you'll do fine.
Amazing teacher. Also, extremely attractive. Hott actually. I took him twice and loved both his classes. Will give you extentions and 3 absences. We only had one final and one paper. Definitely recommend him!
You'll do fine if you read the material. LOTS of class discussion, which I find to be a good thing if the class has actually read. Unfortunately, there is a lot of reading. I probably read about half of the things I was supposed to, and still finished the class with a B+. Throws short pop quizzes, but gives warnings in advance sometimes.
i did not like this class. i have never had a problem with english until i took carens. he gives a 1 pg writing assignment every day and grades papers harshly. discussions were always interesting but i did not enjoy any of the assignments.
This class was pretty good. The tests were quote identification. You just have to remember what he said about the poem in class and say that. There were three essays in the class. He gave us the topics for the essays on the final ahead of time and let us bring notes to use on the final so that was really helpful.
Hes a great teacher and a really interesting guy. As long as you do not have a problem speaking your mind, youll do fine. He is picky, but if you go to his office he will tell you exactly what your essay lacks and exactly what to change. He comments on homework, but you dont get a seperate grade for it, it just "is taken into consideration"
Awesome professor! And sooo sexy, mmm! But yeah, reading-intensive material, has interesting lectures and also likes for students to contribute to discussion. It's kinda mandatory that you atleast say one thing during class - he doesn't like for students to be too quiet. Also requires for students to annotate texts!! Overall he's great! =)
very funny
He's a great professor and is really passionate about his subject, I just wish he was a little nicer sometimes. Maybe it's his yankee roots, but sometimes he can be passive agressively rude to his students. Anyway--class is super easy and he grades papers very fairly especially if you speak in class (he picks favorites).
I have been in honors english classes since second grade and never had a problem with a teacher/course, but with him this was the case... the material was completely uninteresting and the prof I just cant even put into words... some people love him and some people hate him
I love him! He's so funny and really makes the works interesting. He's cute in a dorky kind of way and sometimes gets frustrated when the class gets quiet. Overall, though, it's a great class that you can't help but pay attention in.
A very amusing man. A great deal of reading is required, but is' an English class, so no surprise there. Encourages active discussion. He has a very strict absence policy, though. All the same, he's good at what he does and loves the subject.
always always bring your book. read and take notes in the margins. No long essays, we only read poems. Get ready to intrepret everything you can from almost nothing, but thats the way english is so get used to it ;) Oh and attendance is SUPER STRICT! so don't be late :) He knocks your grade down if you are.
The first time I have felt like I was challenged in an English course & felt rewarded by it. Carens is hilarious and this was a really fun class to take. 2 papers, no tests - regular reading and reading responses (easy). Definitely recommend it.
Wonderful professor! He is very passionate about what he does and that shows through in his classes. He makes the material interesting and is extremely helpful both inside and out of class. Take him, especially if you?re an English lover.
Dr. Carens is the best. He is the most understanding professor, and truly tries to make a connection with all of his students. In Victorian Lit, we only had 1 paper. It was a semester-long project which included frequent visits with Dr. Carens to discuss progress. He's amazing. Take him if you can.
DON'T BE LATE & READ! He's an amazing prof & such a nice guy. Expect a lot of reading & in-depth analysis of the coursework. Reading responses at the start of every class. He is vastly interesting which makes class interesting too. Ask him about his chickens! If you're willing to do your work, take his class!
Dr. Carens is amazing. He taught me just about everything I know about research and writing. His classes are interesting, and he loves his subjects. He's very helpful, and if you go to his office he'll give you great advice (and not make you feel like an idiot). Take him for 299, you'll learn so much and have a great experience!
Do reading extensively, write notes in your book because he checks. Go to EVERY class. Make sure to talk & participate; he picks on people who don't. Get him to look over drafts of every paper, you will get at least one letter grade higher. Sticks to these basics and you can get an A. Goes off on tangents; has very funny stories. Loves chickens
Very good professor. 3 papers, a midterm, and a final paper. Lots of reading but he rereads it in class. He is very helpful when you go to his office hours.
So the class is mostly lectures, starting from the very first day of class. But, there aren't any test, only on major paper you work on the entire semester (which makes up your entire grade) and he is willing to talk to you during office hours, outside office hours, after class, and through email. Carens is great. Take him.
He talks to students as if they are 3 years old, and is terrible at being specific in what he wants. Do not take him, I am about to drop this class. There is not a lot of take home work, but the papers seem to be back to back.
Even though this is just a survey class, Carens makes it interesting and I honestly think you'll walk out with a much better grasp on close reading. Sometimes it seems like you'll analyze something forever in class, but it's not horrible. Definitely bring him drafts of your papers in office hours. He's very willing to work with students!
I recommend taking Professor Carens if you intend to put in the work.
Doesn't think any opinions are correct unless they match his own. Classes that are meant to be discussion based are usually just him talking about his own opinion for the whole time. If he doesn't like you and you don't speak up in class (with comments that he likes), it's difficult to get a good grade. Wouldn't take his class again but it's doable
He is very passionate about British literature so he is a good choice. There are about three papers in the class - each one longer than the one before. He calls on people randomly so you have to pay attention.
I am in love with Dr. Carnes. He is the most intelligent, profound professor I have taken. That being said, he expects students to participate A LOT. And you have to share his ideas to do well. Expect to not get an A on your essays. Pop quizzes are the norm, especially over assigned essays. He's so dreamy though, I could listen to him all day.
This professor made me drop my English minor. Funny in class, but sometimes condescending towards his students. Not willing to accept alternative interpretations of texts. Take if you love poetry, if not, best of luck...
Dr. Carens is a great person and teacher. Although, It really is "his way or the highway". I enjoyed the stuff he taught and he is a nice person. But when I met with him for meetings he was VERY negative towards all of my papers. I met with him a lot, did the extra work, reviewed my essay numerous times and got a solid B every essay.
Professor Carens actually makes reading poetry interesting and offers a fresh perspective on life. He will force you to participate, which can be daunting at times, but is rewarding in the long run. Essay criteria is easy to understand and he provides a sample essay for you to go off of. Would strongly recommend taking him.
I think my rating of him was taken down because it was so bad. Avoid his class like the plague.
He is DREAMY! Prof. Carens cares alot about his students, and expects alot. Be prepared to participate in class a ton. He likes it when students agree with his opinions. Work hard and you will get the grade. He's not a professor you can slack off with. He gives students what they deserve, but is always willing to help. Always bring papers to him.
I was not a fan of Professor Carens at first, but he grew on me! He is incredibly direct and will tell you exactly what he is looking forward. Listen to him and follow his instructions, you will do well. Oh, and also MAKE SURE TO DO THE READINGS!
If I could write an essay about how bad the professor is I would. He is incredibly condescending, if you do not agree with his opinion then you're automatically wrong. He never gives you a clear idea of what he wants and critiques your ideas so heavily that nothing you do is ever good enough for him. He's late to give feedback which adds problems.
Professor Carens can be tough, but honestly you do need that in a good teacher. He would give me very honest opinions on my papers, but would help me make them better as well. The guy was very funny and understanding when it comes to extensions or things like that. Taking him next semester. Great guy, definitely recommend.
Professor Carens is easily one of the best professors Ive ever had. If you are willing to work hard in his class, your academic writing skills will improve exponentially. He is a tough grader, but his feedback is extremely helpful. Because of this class, I became extremely interested in argumentative writing and Im now considering pursuing law.
SO condescending to any opinion that he doesn't share. Lectures are super slow-moving and he asks really leading questions that have only one correct answer. Calls on people who don't pay attention. Class was supposed to be cultural/history focused but he mostly talks about literature and film. In-class essays as exams :(
Professor Carens was a very boring teacher and did not use the proper grade system that the College Of Charleston supplies once. The lectures made me want to rip my head off, they were incredibly slow and not once did he use visual information on the smart board. If you want to suffer for a semester I recommend taking this class. horrible decision
Took this class for the humanities requirement thinking it would be an easy A and fun, but no. Readings were boring, pop quizzes on things that were unimportant, talks slowly the whole lecture. He also picks on the quiet kids that are clearly uncomfortable with speaking in class. Tough grader who never is fulfilled with what you say.
This Professor is great. He gives wonderful feedback and critiques in a kind way. He does require participation. At one point in any of his classes, you will be called on to answer. Its never anything difficult, as most of it is opinionated anyway. You do have to show up having done the reading, though. Hes a really nice guy.
Professor Carens is very engaging with the class, tough grader though.
Honestly, the class I took was entirely discussion which can be super boring. He's a pretty funny and nice guy but the class felt like a waste of time. It was Lit/Film appreciation and we only watched three movies... two of which weren't even movies, they were episodes of Black Mirror. Easy A but kind of mid overall.
Great professor! There are no textbooks for this class, just reading books. I honestly like him as a professor and his ENGL190 class. There are pop quizzes on the content of the book that can either make or break your grade depending on if you do the assigned reading or not. Do make sure you check the syllabus to a T as well!
Carens picks one to two students to pick on in each class. He doesn't teach well, but he is funny. You'll be fine if you are not one of the kids he chooses to hate for no reason. He is an extremely tough grader and doesn't provide clear instructions for the essays he assigns (we wrote about one essay a week.) Great guy outside of class
I loved Professor Carens. At first I was a little unsure as his lectures tend to drag a tad, but they are filled with tons of valuable information that you will use in your essays. There is some random calling on students for answers but if you don't know the answer he always tries to help you find it or calls on someone else.
Don't take him, save yourself. Tough grader with vague feedback. Never understood students' questions, no matter how simple. When he asked you to clarify, would answer a completely different question creating more confusion on both sides. Clearly likes his interpretations over others and would grade accordingly. Very confusing and slow speaker.
Do not take this man's class. His expectations are always unclear and he never manages to make them clear. He is often confused about any question that is asked about the assignments. He frequently changes the schedule at the last minute and expects students to see this immediately. His feedback makes no sense and is entirely unhelpful. Avoid him!
My favorite professor!! Very knowledgeable about literature and writing, and his passion for English and teaching is clear in his lectures which are engaging, straight to the point, and easy to understand. He gives in-depth, helpful feedback on all assignments and essays. Kind, supportive, and understanding if you're having a hard time. Also funny!
He was so awful to me I dropped the class. He said I was cheating when I wasn't because my work was "too good" on the very first discussion post. The lectures I went to were hard to follow and scattered. I would stay away.
Professor Carens has been my favorite teacher in college so far. He really cares about what he teaches and is very open to helping outside of class. He can be a little confusing sometimes, and kinda all over the place, but he loved participation and can tell when effort is put in. He is very attractive; I still have a crush on him lol. Hard grader.
Avoid him at all costs. Lecture heavy yet can't form a sentence without stuttering or forgetting key information from the readings. It's clear that he doesn't prepare at all for classes. Makes remarks against women and likes to make it known that he is in power, which makes for an awful classroom environment.
I have written essays during his classes to pass time of how excruciatingly boring this guy is. I have met senile librarians more enthusiastic than him. Sitting through class has made me rip the hairs out of my scalp out of pure boredom and frustration. Speaks at the rate of a fax machine and then gives a minute of silence after every 3 words.
He cannot give a straightforward answer to even the simplest question to save his life, and seems offended when we have to keep asking. However, he's a nice guy who can be funny sometimes. Be prepared for an ungodly amount of reading.
Stammers out an incoherent sentence before letting us consider the gravity of it for 90 seconds. Would say something funny maybe once a month. A lot of reading, but everything was an easy read. Tough grader and feedback was not useful. Don't take if you fall asleep in class easily--he'll mark you absent and allows only 2 absences.
Tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it's impossible. He is more confused about the course than the students are, and has no idea what's going on. Not sure who allowed him to teach college classes, but truly just a strange man who makes simple things seem impossible, and acts as if it's his first day on earth
Good professor if you enjoy reading. His lectures can definitely be a little long and boring and he doesn't always give the most straightforward answers but he gives great feedback on assignments and is pretty organized. He is very lenient about extensions. Participation is super important and he will grade easier if you talk in class.
Professor Carens is genuinely the meanest most bully professor I've ever had in my entire 3 years of college. He picks favorites and stays dedicated to them, he also is not afraid to let you know if your writing is subpar and his choice of words are quite rude. I withdrew from his class bc of blatant bullying and strange comments he made.
Honestly a decent guy, but should not be teaching anymore. He is paranoid about ai and falsely accused several people in my class ready to send them to the dean. A lot of reading, and participation dictates if he grades you well or not. Gives good feedback and has ok lectures. Not bad for a mandatory class, but would not take by choice.
Sweet guy, honestly, participation matters more than anything else. If you joke around with him and speak up in class, the lectures are a lot more fun. He has a difficult time with words occasionally, and the cadence of his reading voice might lull you to sleep during an early morning lecture-- interacting with the class is the way to go.
