This guy is the most annoying person I have EVER encountered. He requires attendance in a class of +200, is very obnoxious in his lecture and if you're any religion other than Christian, you can kiss him giving you attendance points for holidays goodbye. Awful professor!
Dr. Donahue is a great teacher, you just have to be a good student and you'll be fine. Go to the lectures: they're long, but they're entertaining and very informative. Stay for the movie afterwards, it'll be on the test. Read the book, he pulls material from that, too. Do these things, and you'll get an A. Half ass it, and you'll fail. Simple.
Love this professor. Very brilliant in his field. Love to teach and is fun. Keeps you interested and not bored. Power Points very helpful for exams. He's very thorough. I would love to have him as my professor for entire years with VCU.
Exciting class and an extraordinary professor. This professor makes you thirst for knowledge but time flys when you are in his class. If you attend the classes and complete all assignments you should not have a problem passing the class. He is simply the BEST.
Awesome professor. Very interesting lectures. He loves his subject and it shows.
best professor i have ever had!! i encourage anyone to take him, even though he teaches night classes it will be worth it ! he is genuinely interested in what he teaches and explains it well. Attend the classes , pay attention, do the assignments and the class will be an easy A
Very funny. Tends to use some of the same jokes a few times. His jokes are sometimes borderline ****. Overall an enjoyable class. His powerpoints are a bit cheezey but they are to the point. His examples are clear, and really help you study.
He's a very good teacher. I had him for the night class and even though it was long,he kept it interesting. He even adds jokes in his slides. Class is pretty easy if you study; don't even really have to read the textbook. Attendance no mandatory but each class he does questions you have to answer and turn in which counts for attendance. I got an A.
Dr. Donahue has been my favorite professor so far! His intrest in the subject really shows through his lectures and he knows how to keep the class intrested. I'm seriously considering changing my major having taken this class. You wont regret spending a semester in Dr. D's classroom!!
I took his night class and not once have i fallen asleep. He makes the class enjoyable and after taking his Psy101 class i am reconsidering taking psychology as my new major. He gives papers to write every week but he is straightforward with the rubric and as long as you follow the rubric you get an A. He is one of the best teachers i have had.
He can make a 3 hour class go by so fast and rarely does he use the full 3 hours. Never got bored or fallen asleep. He is really passionate about the material. He has mini quizzes used to keep attendance but gives the answer and extra credit. Just study, do what he asks, go to class. = A
Take his night class. Very interesting man. Class attendance was worth more than the final. Very easy A if you do the very easy assignments. He teaches what is relevant for basic psych knowledge. One of the few politically conservative profs@vcu, but he doesn't rub into your face like some of the more liberal profs
He is a great prof. Very clear with what he expects. Teaching is clear and to the point. Answers questions. Attentance is mandatory which is a pain but his in class quizzes which are every class, is easy points. If you study for his exams in which unlike most profs he provides study guides and do the assignments you will get a good grade. Flexible.
AWESOME professor. Definitely recommend him especially for 1st year students or anyone looking for an easy A! Come to class because of daily quizzes (which he gives the answers to) study ur book & powerpoints (posted on blackboard) hes super nice & funny ...not boring at all!
alot of powerpoints! but a fun and enthusiastic teacher. just dont sign up for the once a week night class. killer!
The amount of information that he covers in one class can be overwhelming and the majority of it might not even make it on the test. I don't know what these other people are talking about maybe he paid them off or something. He also requires us to take mandatory, inconvenient surveys which can be a gigantic headache for a student with a job. I.e. m
Professor Donahue is an AWESOME professor! Take him if you can! Yes, he gives a lot of assignments, but it comes in handy when calculating your grade at the end of the semester. If you go to his class, there's no reason you won't get an A. Attendance is taken though by weekly quizzes, which he gives you the answers to. AWESOME GUY!!
Take professor donahue if you can for psych 101! He's a really interesting guy and he tries to make the 7-9:40 class go by quick! He gives a lot of assignments, but it helps when you're calculating your grade at the end....Gives weekly attendance quizzes which he gives you the answers to...No reason you can't get an A if you just go to class!!
great guy, really interesting class. tends to get a little too close to the people on the outside of the rows lol highly recommend the class.
Great teacher. Obviously has a lot of passion for the field. Ended up changing my major to psych by the end of the sem. Several paperish assignments that are easy as long as you dont put them off like I did... Test Qs were a little off from his lectures- I think he uses a test bank. No biggie just read the book Q's before a test. Very approachable.
BEST TEACHER BY FAR!!!!TAKE HIS CLASS. HE'S FUNNY AND HIS CLASS IS EASY AS LONG AS YOU DO ALL YOUR WORK. THERES A COUPLE OF PAPERS AND ONLINE QUIZZES. BUT MAKE SURE U ATTEND CLASS BECAUSE HE GIVES QUIZZES AT THE END OF CLASS THAT ARE APART OF YOUR GRADE. BUT BEST TEACHER EVER. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
THE BEST TEACHER I'VE HAD SO FAR!! He makes the lectures interesting and for a class that was almost 3 hours long (2 hours and 50 minutes), that's not an easy task. He breaks the high fancy language that was probably in our text into common sense and fun. Just go to class and do the online homework and you'll get an A. Tests are multiple choice!
Amazing class. Amazing Prof!
Take this class if you want to actually learn things. Mr. Donahue is a wonderful and attention-keeping teacher! Come to class, do the work, and you'll be fine. Probably my favorite class.
He is a great teacher, cares about the subject and the students a lot. He has a lot of energy and will keep you interested and awake. He likes to talk to students in the class and is very funny. If you ever have a chance take this teacher. He is totally worth it.
One of my favorite teachers. He's very passionate about what he teaches, and he loves to teach. Great professor!
awesome teacher! I enjoyed going to his classes, because he makes the lectures interesting and fun :) TAKE THIS CLASS!
Attendance is mandatory. He has super easy weekly quizzes. He is actually really interesting and keeps me awake for the full 3 hour lecture. Posts his powerpoints on BB so study those. Tests are given online so you can use those notes. Do all the assignments and you will get at least a B or an A if you do well on tests
great professor. everything is super easy you'd have to be a moron to get less than a B (even tho I'd say less than an A b/c thats how easy the class is to follow). he manages to make psychology easy even at 7pm at night. great prof
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Donahue's class. I really, really hate night classes, but I can honestly say his class was worth it. He makes lectures very fun and interesting and easy to learn! He is a funny individual who tries not to bore his students out for 3 hours at night... and it works! Keep up with the material and you should do well!
Excellent teacher.
He is a great teacher. He jokes a lot and tries to keep the class from being to boring and also shows his interest in particular subjects. If you FOLLOW THE SYLLABUS and take notes you will do fine.
Dr. Donahue is the best. He is very interesting & super energetic. He makes the material interesting & he tries really hard to make the material make sense. Read the book & go to class, & you'll do great. If you don't understand something, go to him, he is great about helping students. His tests are a little hard, but he does give extra credit.
I hated him. The class itself wasn't hard but he was incredibly annoyed and never helped anyone with anything. He made his student teacher to everything! He treats his students like babies, making you repeat things he says. He assigns a lot of papers and assignments. I hated this class & his teaching style!
This man is by far the best teacher I've had so far. He's funny and knows how to make the material interesting. I looked forward to his class every night. Do the work, take the notes, and ask for help if you need it. He's a great guy and will totally help you out if you need it. The assignments aren't hard if you just follow the outline. :) I hope I could find another one of his classes and I'd take that too!
LOTS of assignments, it is a 4 credit class. He keeps your attention in class, very enthusiastic/energetic nice man knows his stuff! Great class, go to every class he takes (easy and short) quizzes up for participation points. 3 papers, 3 exams, SONA study, weekly quizzes online. Not hard to get a B in, and not extremely tough for an A.
Love him! He is funny and keeps class going even if it is a 7-9:40 class. His tests are kind of hard but if you study you'll be fine. Definitely take notes and go to class for the quizzes. The online labs and SONA's are annoying but an easy grade booster!
Very funny and interesting. His test are very hard though and thats the only reason i got a C. He knows his stuff and he gives short quizzes every class that are no brainers because he gives you the answers
If you show up for class, take good notes, and participate you will do great. He has a 5 question quiz each class.
Great Guy!!! Very funny and extremely smart! I got a c because I unfortunately took to much time on my major classes and did not spend any time on this class! Go to class, do the work, and you will be just fine! Also, you will learn a ton!
He may be "funny" but ultimately he's a mildly bigoted old man who likes to listen to himself talk and can't even be bothered to except papers through email. His rules make little sense and will sideswipe your semester with sudden and unreasonable bad grades. He's only popular because the other professor is a religious nut.
Terrible experience! He may be funny however I found his class extremely frustrating. 7-9:40pm? He also is not very understanding and his rules don't make sense. Tests are hard too. As for the SONA studies, unlike other teachers, he doesn't offer alternative assignments. If I had a better professor, I would've aced this class. Ruined my GPA.
Loved him! His tests were detailed and lengthy. But he gives a study guide which is right off the test. He also puts power points up on Bb. He's super funny and loves the subject!
Great teacher, with a great passion for what he loves. He is by far the best professor i have had in terms of an enjoyable lecture. Don't listen to the comments of other people on here complaining of petty things, you do every thing that is expected of you (read the book, take notes, do all assignment) you will prevail.
Hands down, one of the best professors that I've ever had. Sure, his class time is a little inconvenient, but the material and the way he delivers it is so interesting that you won't notice, and you might even wish that the class met more than once a week. He's the reason why I decided to double major! You will not regret taking a class with him!
Truly, I see why people like him a lot. He tries to make lectures interesting, I suppose, but really he ends up gushing over one small thing and DOES NOT teach the rest of the chapter. If you are willing to learn stuff on your own, I'd say take him cause he can be funny, but if you want a TEACHER, might suggest someone else.
He is a very nice professor, but I would never recommend this class. To anyone. Ever. He will have you bending over backwards to complete all of his assignments, not to mention his tests are extremely hard to prepare for. They consist of more than 100+ multiple choice questions AND atleast 3 pages worth of free response. Take another professor.
He's very fun and makes the course interesting. In-class quiz is EASY, online quiz is HARD, SONA is little annoying but easy, he highlights all the TERMS that WILL BE on the tests so you have to attend the class and only take note on the highlighted words, make 100+ flash cards the day before and get an A. Final test is actually HARD. Still got A.
Favorite class to date. It is so clear that Psychology is his passion, though he is educated in many other fields. Online weekly assignments which are straightforward. Tests are difficult, but course material pertains to every day life and is intriguing. Such a great professor.
He is an amazing teacher and you can tell he loves what he does. Tests suck and are long and difficult if you do not study. SONA is super easy just get it done right away! I would recommend this class just sdont procrastinate and USE THE STUDY GUIDES!
Cool guy but he demands quite a bit for his physio class. I wouldn't recommend him if you plan on taking other hard classes. Tests are multiple choice and free response. Online article quizzes which are easy point boosters. attendance not mandatory. If you study and regularly review the slides, you should get a B at least.
He is an awesome man and knows what he's talking about. He stays on top of his work so there is no way to get away with slacking off in his class. But read the book and use the study guides to your advantage and you'll do fine!
Workload for this class is a lot. test are hard but there is a lot of other points to raise your grade. For tests study the "study guide" and power points, not the book(its takes mulitple hours to read and is pointless). Do not procrastinate on SONA credits because end of semsester they fill up fast and usually make or break your grade
This course is very hard. He assigns multiple readings in addition to the book readings. He will not let you use a laptop to take notes and speeds through the powerpoint slides. He also isn't very helpful, nor is he organized, and puts all the responsibility on his TA. I would avoid him.
He is awesome! He doesn't allow any technology in his class BECAUSE ITS DISTURBING when you and 70 other people are on facebook and twitter. He makes it very easy to understand the material & he is energetic and funny while teaching you. All the other negative comments must be written by lazy students that cant go an hour without their phones.
He's the best professor ever! Everyone should take a class with him!
It's only been a month of class and I think he is obnoxious and disorganized. Yes, he does expect you to read the book and come to class (it is required for class points). If you do what you're supposed to be doing aka attending class, taking notes, and reading then you should be able to pass fine.
ugh. It's unfortunate that his lectures are more of a performance; speaking with him one on one he comes off as indifferent, annoyed, and arrogant. His grading is ridiculously hard. I did above and beyond what was expected and he would still manage to find something to take a point or two off to give the assignment a B. Wouldn't recommend.
Dr. Donahue is definitely not an easy professor, but he is very passionate about what he does and is a good teacher. He keeps you entertained in lectures, and there are "lecture quizzes" but he literally gives you the answers its just for attendance. Tests definitely require a good amount of studying but aren't super tricky if you do.
Professor had to cover a lot in a short amount of time. He speeds through the powerpoint, so don't expect to take amazing notes. The online lab assignments are the most annoying, easy, but time consuming and every week. The format of his tests are 60 multiple choice, 20 fill in the blank, 2 short answers. Can't miss lectures, he gives quizzes.
I took this class once a week from 4-6:40 which I thought I would dread but Professor Donahue made it painless, his lectures are filled with jokes and he is so passionate about psychology. The topics are all pretty interesting but I definitely suggest reading the chapters before lecture because he goes fast. Tests are not as hard as everyone said.
Dr. Donahue is very passionate about psychology and it really shows. I loved taking this class, I felt like I learned a lot and it made me excited to be a psych major. Anecdotes made the material very understandable and fun. Some of the online work was different from what we learned in class, but they weren't difficult to complete. DO SONA NOOOW
I love Dr. Donahue. He's one of the reason I love VCU. His lectures are so interesting. You never feel bored even if it's a 3-hr lecture. His tests are straight from the power points (which are posted on BB). He also gives out study guides. So do not worry. A lot of opportunities for extra credit. SONA and pop quizzes are super easy.
1010 amen. bless
Dr. Donahue's Perception class was definitely an above average workload for a course. For an A, read the chapters and come to class; if you try and rely on the slides you're gonna have a bad time. He does tend to ramble about this and that, sometimes starting class 10 minutes late. But he does seem to generally care for his students.
Dr. Donahue is an amazing professor! The course is intense for an introductory class, but it is expected since it is a university. His lectures are very entertaining and expect to always learn an interesting fact from him every lecture. The work load can get pretty intense, but it is expected. Great professor! Would recommend to everyone!!!!
This does not feel like a 101, 4 lectures covered 16 chapters, very long test, lots of studying needed if this is new to you (psych 101). very good at lecturing, very good professor, just lots of work
Very passionate about psychology. Interesting and fun lectures. Takes attendance through the form of easy quizzes, so go to class. Posts lectures online and says exactly what will be on tests. Gives a comprehensive study guide for each test. Definitely a fun class.
Donahue is amazing. This is a 4 credit class so it is harder that other 101 classes. SONA is easy, but do it early. His tests are very long and you defiantly need to put in some studying time. Very interesting class, and a great professor.
Great Professor! Makes the lectures very interesting and fun! Tests do not try to trick you and are fair if you put in the work to study the lecture powerpoints. I highly recommend his class! Must attend class to get the attendance grades. Very reasonable for a four credit class.
Dr. Donahue was the best teacher that I have ever had. His lectures were incredibly interesting, and he's a very passionate speaker. I would take this class again and recommend to a friend. As long as you pay attention in class you will do well, he even puts up a study guide! It was a great semester!
Donahue loves teaching and that definitely shows when he talk about psychology. He always gives out study guides online before the tests and gives extra credit. Take him if you have the chance favorite teacher of all time
Great Professor!! He will make you work hard for your grade, but as long as you read your textbook, do your labs, and go to class for attendance points you'll be fine. He is very understandable, he always adds his own insight into his lectures. You can tell he loves what he does
Dr. Donahue is a joy to have as a professor! There are 3 tests and all are extremely easy - my lowest grade was a 96. He makes lecture super interesting and entertaining, and he's very interactive with the students! HIGHLY recommend!!
Huge class with over 300 students, but had small class feel. Very passionate and engaged professor with just the right amount of humor (albeit a little to corny at times). Online lab assignments were easy and helped reinforce lecture content. "DSM in the Movies" assignment was fun. PowerPoints were so good, I barely needed textbook.
Cool guy. Made a lot of jokes, really has this thing he does where he makes concepts stick by describing them in a humorous manner. Trust me, take his class & you won't regret it.
Donahue was by far one of the best professors I had this semester. He has attendance quizzes every class, which makes attendance important but he will give the answers to everyone. His tests are tough but they are based off the study guides that are on blackboard. He makes lectures entertaining to sit through and lectures are on blackboard.
I took Psyc 451 with Dr. Donahue. His "once in a while" "extra credit" pop quizzes are actually every day, in my experience. Just make it a point to go to every single class. The tests (4) are very long, multiple choice online + a written in-class. He gave me an awesome reference letter for grad school. Group (2-3) final on an assigned subject.
Donahue is super cool and funny. Not to mention passionate about psychology, so he's gonna do his best to make you passionate too. I was always engaged in this class. There is a reasonable amount of work but Donahue makes sure that you get the grade you deserve.
Very humorous and keeps the energy in the classroom positive. This was a capstone class for me and as long as the assignments get done, the class is easy. Just remember to take good notes for the writing sections of tests.
He's frikkin awesome. His lectures are great, he points out what he wants you to REALLY understand. Homework is helpful if you take it seriously and do it before the class lecture. Tests are straightforward. He's really funny and nice and cares about his students, never makes you feel stupid for asking a question. AND he likes the Steelers :)
This was a spotlight 1 credit class yet he assigned more work than a 3 credit class. This could have been a great class if I were not so stressed by all of the work that needed to be done for this 1 credit class!! I feel robbed of my hard work.
This class wasn't that hard but definitely takes a lot of effort on your part. You basically teach yourself most of the material because he flies through the PowerPoints. Multiple choice tests online, writing section in class (open note), group presentation/poster - easy. Also, takes daily attendance through quizzes. Overall a lot of work.
Was the best professor that I have taken in the Department of Psychology. Made bland lectures interesting to the best he could. Always worked with me in trying to make sure I was up to speed. If you have to take Psych 451 I wouldn't take it with anyone else!
Designed to be a difficult class. If you want to take him, you WILL learn. But, you HAVE to work.
Dr. Donahue is easily my favorite professor at VCU. He's knowledgeable about a lot of different subjects psych, biology, history, philosophy and it shows. He is a super enthusiastic lecturer and absolutely hilarious, if you also have a weird sense of humor. He's fair, and as long as you put in effort at all you should get a good grade. Take him!
Dr. Donahue is a great professor! I took him for perception, which is probably his favorite class to teach. (or so he says) He tries to make lectures interesting and he is really quite silly, but you will work to learn. you have to pay attention and come to class. he gave us points for coming to class in the summer!
This class and professor is outrageous. The workload is astronomical compared to other upper level courses. Even with spending several hours a week preparing and hand writing more than 10 pages of notes for exams, I still manage to receive a C on them? He spends more time cracking jokes than he does explaining the material. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Really great guy, fun to listen to. Lectures are monotonous but he makes them fun. He really cares about the subject and it really comes across. Uses the TA a LOT, but it isn't confusing. The extra credit for the course (Launchpad1 entire credit) is awful but it is doable.
In my first year at VCU, I haven't met a more enthusiastic professor. He is so passionate about his lectures. He is quite humorous at times, and can really create a welcoming environment for the student. He is also very adamant on no electronic use in his lectures, but the lectures are interesting enough so you won't feel the need to use them.
Very good at explaining information. Lectures are very clear. Tests are easy as long as you know definitions and how to apply them. Noncumulative exam. Three tests. There are two papers but as long as you do what it says you'll get a 100. Not a hard grader. Very nice and likes to get to get tot know his students. Very funny.
I really love this professor. I was recommended to take his class and I'm glad I did. Donahue makes his class super interesting and engaging. I had a 3 hour lecture on a Tuesday night and I never dreaded going. Not an easy class though so do your work and stay engaged and you're golden. Def the coolest prof I have had at VCU.
this was the worst course I've ever taken here at VCU. Dr. Donahue is condescending, rude, and transphobic. He touches his students and intentionally makes them uncomfortable. He interrupts people mid-presentation to add "fun facts" that really aren't fun for anyone. His emails are very short and rude. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Donahue is a lovely little old man, he made lecture entertaining with his fire hydrant sexuality jokes and is very passionate about psychology. Loved his class.
AMAZING professor. My favorite professor in my undergraduate career here at VCU. While there is a lot of work - it is a capstone course and it isn't unreasonable. I think the tests are fair and if you do all the work you can earn an easy A. Very passionate and enthusiastic about what he teaches and very reasonable. Highly recommend his class
Absolutely hilarious professor. I was in the 3 hour class one day/week and he has a strict no tech policy, but he had no trouble holding my attention the entire time. Great lectures and very interactive with students. Tests are short answer/MC and count 50% of grade, but they definitely aren't hard. Would definitely take again.
Professor Donahue is so funny and just an amazing professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches and cars for his students. He does in class quizzes (NOT HARD AT ALL) majority of the time he gives you the answers to them, lectures are fun and enjoyable, also gives two chances for extra credit (a paper or presentation, you can only do one)
Dr. Donahue is still one of my favorite professors at VCU. I had him for PSYC 101, which is not necessarily a rigorous class, but he made it very enjoyable. He is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the material, and he makes you excited to learn.
Donahue is the best professor I had all semester. He is very personal and can relate well to students. His tests aren't too bad, take home section is an easy grade booster. Go to class and do the online LaunchPads, and you are golden
Dr. Donahue is hilarious! I took him for Perception and while it was a little difficult to get used to his work load for the course, once you get used to it, you realize that he's only trying to help you learn and be prepared for his tests!! Really engaging with students. Go to his lectures, take detailed notes, and go to the REVIEW SESSIONS!!!
I took Dr. D's perception psych class and he made it very enjoyable. He's interesting and always makes jokes. I didn't use the textbook once, all powerpoints are posted online and questions come straight from them and study guides. Attendance points every class and he offers extra credit opportunities. Not that difficult of a class IMO.
Dr. D is literally the man. Best professor I've had at VCU. I took him for perception and plan on taking him again. At first his class can seem challenging and a headache but I really didn't understand how much I learned until applying it to other courses. You'll enjoy his lectures. He is truly one of a kind.
Donahue is just outstanding. Amazing lectures. Hilarious! "Sucking face" is a phrase you'll hear almost every lecture. There is 1 test on a book, but very fair. SONA credits must be completed ASAP or you risk losing out on studies. I did not ever touch my textbook - just study what he highlights in yellow on PPTs and study guides. Sweet TA.
Dr. Donahue's lectures are interesting and you can tell he really cares about what he teaches. Using the textbook will definitely help you out if you missed something, but you don't really need it if you go to class and take good notes. It's worth noting though that he doesn't allow technology of any sort during his lectures (no phones or laptops).
Took this class for credit since I'm a senior. He's into biology alot so I enjoyed his lectures. Studied the day before the exams by skimming the PPS and doing the SG, lowest grade i got was a 90. Get sona and book test done early. Watch his ted talk. Very effective lecturer- interactive etc. Launch pad Hw isn't bad just aggravating at times
A great professor, he is actually pretty interesting and funny. The tests aren't too bad, just don't slack on the assignments. Wasn't an easy A, but wasn't too hard either. Only got a B cause I missed some assignments.
GREAT PROFESSOR! He always grasped my attention. Attendance is a grade, so go to class- but each one is worth it. You also have a lot of assignments, but don't blow them off, and they'll help your grade. Test are tough, but he also gives an extra credit opp (20-30 points). Not an easy A, but doable. Took him as a freshman, and he prepared me well!
Prof Donahue is very passionate about what he teaches and excited every class. He does offer some extra credit but he is very firm about sticking to what he says in the syllabus. Every assignment is outlined in the syllabus and attendance is taken for a grade every class.
Super funny, kinda cheesy but adorable. I learned a lot in the class, never used the textbook, but you need to get it for the online code / homework you have to do :/
This class really isn't that difficulty, he doesn't really cover the content in class, but most of the tests are open book/open not and or on-line. Not the easiest class but doable for sure.
I love him as a professor, but there is so much material. Take the Launchpad and online quizzes seriously, they affect your grade more than you realize. There are only 3 tests so study as much as you can for them. Lectures are interesting but tend to get boring from time to time.
Donahue is a hilarious and very sweet professor who makes his lectures very interesting. The tests are pretty hard and weigh a lot into your final grade. Attendance is taken every class period and there are also one to two online assignments every week making it pretty time consuming. Definitely NOT an easy A but he is still a great professor.
Hes very friendly and makes it easy to understand the material. Homework load is very manageable and the tests are not hard if you review notes and use his study guides.
He is very sweet. He is wonderful at explaining things. I defiantly want him as a professor again.
Really good professor, but the tests are fairly difficult especially if you dont study. For open book quizzes online you can use his powerpoints or textbook for reference instead of just the videos given. Otherwise, you dont really need to read the book if you take good notes in class, but if you read you will ace the tests no problem.
Dr. D is a great professor. He is very passionate about psychology and it's clear in his lectures! Attendance is necessary and he does use quizzes to take attendance sometimes. There are quite a few assignments outside of class that he won't really talk about in class, so make sure to stay updated with the syllabus!
Dr. Donahue is incredible, take his PSYC class if you can! His lectures are engaging and he's hilarious. He gives a ton of extra credit opportunities and his tests are essentially the study guides he posts on Blackboard. The class is workload heavy but the material is easy and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great professor.
Amazing professor, I would rec. him to anyone going into psyc. His lectures are funny and he relates them to real life situations. Never a dull moment in the class and jokes around a lot too. Do the study guides and go to the SI sessions. You DO the guides IN the sessions. Don't necessarily have to read because it's lectured in class but detailed.
Super funny and passionate. Lots of online modules and quizzes but they are easy as long as you read. Textbook isn't completely necessary but it does help.
Lots of quizzes and test but a great professor
I had Dr. Donahue for Perception. That class was not too bad. History of Psychology, however, was a whole different game. After the class gets moving, expect an exam, paper, or both every week. Other than that, the class is fine. Donahue is a great professor. Though I do agree with another student here saying he comes off uninterested 1 on 1.
Dr. Donahue's lectures are long but he takes the time to explain concepts in detail if you don't understand. There were 3 tests in this class, none of them cumulative, as well as a few writing assignments. Make sure to buy the book, he uses it a lot for online quizzes! I would take him again!
All tests are open notes! Dr. D does have a lot of assignments but they are all simple and pretty self explanatory. There is extra credit offered on something you find interesting about the history of psychology. Attendance is mandatory, expect to stay the full lecture.
Dr. Donahue rambles on about his life and doesn't even go over everything on the powerpoint in class. Great that he gives study guides, but you literally have to learn everything by yourself for the test. There's no point in going to class because he barely goes over anything. I learn more from the tons of assignments that he gives than from him.
this class was an absolute joke. Be prepared to teach your self EVERYTHING. he might go over the info in class but its brief and decides to go on tangents about his past endeavors rather than repeating and emphasizing complex information. this class threw me some of the hardest tests ive taken in college. DO NOT take this unless you have to.
I dont know why this teacher has such a high score. He talks about everything except what is on the exam. Study guides are PAGES long and only half is actual material on the exam. His exams are ridiculously long and hard. For a teacher that is so specific on what he wants, he teaches NOTHING. Worst decision of my life to ever taken this class
This teacher does not teach. His exams are stressful. They are long and intensive where it might be impossible to receive a good grade if you haven't studied for about a month in advance. I am surprised with the high score because I signed up for this class because of his high score but I clearly made a big mistake.
If you want your gpa to drop... take this class. If not I wouldnt recommend taking this teacher!!
Do not take this class. Just no. If you like your GPA or don't want it to be any lower avoid at all cost. He talks about everything except the meterial and his tests are rediculous. Study guides are useless. He is very passive aggressive in class and on online instructions.
This class lowered my GPA. Spends most of the class making corny jokes that no one cares about. Study guides are not helpful. His exams are impossible. Get ready to be stressed if you take this class.
Professor Donahue speeds through his lecture slides, barely giving enough time to copy enough of it to study from. He goes off on tangents that have arguably nothing to do with the class. He can be very passive aggressive/rude at times. There is also a lot of extra online assignments to do for this class. Would not recommend him.
Do not take this course with this professor!!! His exams are extremely difficult for no reason and they are worth 66% of your grade. It is as if he wants students to fail and he is very rude. His exams are two parts and his study guides are pages long even though half of it is not on the exams. I regret ever thinking he was an alright professor.
SO MUCH WORK. didn't think I'd fail a class my 1st semester but this guy helped me out big time with that.
Dr. Donahue is a great professor! you need to attend lectures to get the info! reading the textbook alone will not get you an A. I never dreaded going to class because I learned a lot, and he made it so interesting ! there are plenty of extra credit opportunities and theres also homework but its not difficult, so just plan accordingly! 11/10!
Literally the best PSYC professor i have had. He is so funny and I WASN'T bored in 3 hour lectures. He gives extra credit and his tests are challenging but fair. The first test is the hardest then it gets progressively easier. I learned a lot with only 1 session a week. He does a lot of demonstrations too which help with the material!
Dr. Donahue is a really nice guy and a decent instructor. He is VERY passionate about Psychology, but sometimes his strong interest allows him to forget we are all introductory students, as he moves along very quickly. The class moves at a rapid pace and is very broad. Lots of work in the class. If you're required to take 101, he is a solid choice!
Thank you for lowering my GPA! He sometimes do not post announcements on BB and would deduct points on late homework. Exams are setup like its a final exam with pages of free response and questions. Worse professor ever.
His quizzes are pretty difficult and the tests are probably the hardest tests I have ever taken and I'm a psych major. Hes really nice though and makes his lectures interesting and fun to listen to
As a positive, I think Prof. Donahue knows his stuff and his lectures are interesting, you can tell he's passionate. However, I would NOT recommend taking a class with him unless you are extremely good at reading and keeping up w/ homework. There were just way too many extra assignments that felt unnecessary considering this was a gen ed credit.
Professor Donahue is a really great professor. He is funny, relatable, and is passionate about the subject he's teaching. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities for you, but he expects you to keep up with your work. The tests are difficult and detailed, so studying is a must. I would show up to his lectures and take notes as well.
Prof. Donahue is one of the nicest professors I've ever had. I always enjoyed his class. He is not an easy A, but he also isn't unreasonable. When everything went online due to COVID, he handled it really well I felt. I would definitely recommend!
It is pretty easy to fall behind because of the course load. Each week we had packback responses, labs, and lecture quizzes to do. There is also a couple of papers and tests in there too. Tests were also only up for 48 hours. You have to watch his lectures and read the textbook to be able to do well on his quizzes.
Dr. Donahue's class is one of my favorites. He is super passionate about psychology and seems like a sweet person. He has a clear and concise schedule that outlines every due date, and every week there is a lecture quiz, lab, and discussion post with 2 responses due. Definitely a hard class, but keep up and you'll be fine!
Prof Donahue was my favorite professor this semester. His lectures are interesting and you can tell that he likes what he teaches. Each week we had a lecture quiz, lab quiz, and discussion posts. Ngl it was a lot at times. TAKE PSYC 101 WITH HIM!!
Dr. Donahue was my best professor this fall. While it was a challenging course, he made great efforts to make sure his students had the resources needed to succeed. I appreciated his feedback, review sessions, and attempts to bring extra interesting content to help me better understand the material.
TAKE DR. D FOR THIS CLASS. This class will be one of the most thought provoking classes you take in undergrad and you will want someone who will teach the concepts right. He is so understand and has a great personality. He has been an angel during the pandemic and always extended due dates and even canceled a big project to relieve the stress!
I love Dr. Donahue. Print his syllabus, lecture 45-80 mins, some may find it boring but he's so adorable and you can tell he's passionate. Some were able to just look at his powerpoint instead and do well on lecture quiz. Packback was easy. Just get SONA over with, it's just surveys. Honestly the only class I did work in, def stay on top of it. Lab
Was pretty good once I got used to everything. Discussions, easy labs, lecture with quiz. Same stuff every week. Occasional tests. His lectures kept my attention and were interesting.
If youre taking psychology 101, take his class!! Dr. Donahue was amazing. His lectures were great, and hes very passionate about what he is teaching. The test and quizzes werent bad at all because the information was provided within the textbook and most of the time from his lectures. Absolutely amazing professor and class!
Dr. Donahue is an amazing professor, each lecture has a quiz that goes along with it and a launchpad assignment/quiz, but as long as you pay attention you'll do find. He made psychology 101 enjoyable, highly recommend!
Dr. Donahue is the best professor i've had the privilege of learning from. Hislectures are long but they're engaging and filled with information. He does a great job of connecting with his students even online. Despite this being an online class, I felt I was in the classroom and learned so much! Highly recommend taking this class with Donahue!
Donahue is a great professor, he is passionate about what he teaches and very knowledgeable. To pass, make sure to watch the lectures and read the textbook because it's not a free to pass class. Also just to let you know he requires packback, a question-asking site and you pay 50 to get it.
Amazing, informative lectures, very solid professor. Accessible via email, caring and understands life sometimes gets in the way. Only a few hard due dates in this class. Read the textbook beforehand. Highly recommend.
This online summer course was structured in a way that was easy to keep up with even when working a full-time job. Each chapter comes with a quiz & there are 4 exams total -- timed w no backtracking. Recorded lectures are provided but you can get by just reading the textbook & taking good notes. There were also 2 very easy writing assignments.
I loved getting an introduction to psychology from Dr. Donahue! His lectures were so interesting to me and he tried to make them funny/enjoyable. This class does require you to stay on top of your schedule and read the text/watch the lectures, but Dr. Donahue is extremely clear about when things are due and what his expectations are.
Donahue is extremely strict and the material is really difficult. Dont take unless youre ready to work
Dr. Donahue is very stern but he is also considerate and kind. Whenever extensions are needed, he allows them for emergencies. His work load was a lot, but it is all fairly simple if you watch the lectures and read the textbook. I would have a better grade if I did that myself. I recommend taking his class.
I took this class as an online asynchronous course and really enjoyed it. There are a lot of readings, quizzes, and discussions (and a few papers too). Dr. Donahue is very understanding & genuinely cares about his students. 10/10 would recommend taking a class with him.
His weekly quizzes were kinda hard, same with the lengthy exams. If you do well on the papers and packback it will help you with your grade. He is nice and willing to extend due dates but his class is pretty hard compared to other psych classes.
Physiological psychology is tough, but this class was particularly frustrating. Don't take this alongside other hard classes. Long 80 question tests, with some unclear questions. I emailed him a few times, and he always responded rudely. He gives extra credit and class requirements are straightforward, which is good, but I wouldn't take him again.
This was my 2nd time having Dr. Donahue. Although he is test heavy, I valued his feedback and his lectures. His class was reasonably difficult for an upper level psychology course. I studied hard and stayed engaged, and I was successful. He's very knowledgeable about anything psychology. He posted lots of relevant, cool material on Canvas too!
I would rather throw myself down three flights of stairs than ever take a class with Dr. Donahue again. On the positive side he is very consistent, unfortunately he is consistently condescending and rude. His exams have two written questions and basically a million multiple choice.also doesn't allow you to go back and change answers during the exam
I took this course my freshman year and he was VERY SWEET! There is a lot of work but honestly it's not that hard. He would make us watch his lecture videos and he would tell us what to write down and what was important to memorize for the test. Honestly you'll do fine if you just stay on track of the assignments and just actual learn the material.
Dr. Donahue is honestly a good professor. I had my doubts at first because he comes off kinda stuck up with his 20 page syllabus, but the material isn't too difficult. It requires actual thought to get an A, but you could easily get a C with minimal effort if that's your thing. The lectures are required, but they're entertaining and interesting.
He has very energetic lectures and tries to connect to students, event in a big lecture. Easy grader for papers and there aren't a ton. Open note tests, which are not made to be tricky. Quiz about every week but many have 3 attempts and they are pretty moderate quiz. Go to class, take notes, pay attention and you'll do great. Do not get behind.
Dr.Donahue is a great professor. Although he has long lectures, all of the information is helpful and he makes it an engaging time for all his students. He gives clear instructions and gives plenty of time to get things done as long as you manage your time well. All of his tests are also open note and online.
Dr. Donahue makes the 2-3 hour lectures bearable. He is interesting and funny, although the class is not particularly. He also gives a good amount of extra credit opportunities. It's a somewhat difficult class but mainly because of the lecture length. I do like this professor; Highly recommend.
Be ready to work, he gives you lots of work, you have a quiz due every friday, you even have to write papers and read a 200 page book and there is a test on it, You also have a packback due every week, and each of his lectures is over 100 slides long. TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE WITH SOMEONE ELSE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IN PERSON.
I would definitely recommend Professor Donahue! He is very funny and keeps class entertaining. However, attendance is mandatory and it is very lecture heavy. There were on average 100 slides per class. I took it once a week. Very clear expectations. If you take notes, keep up with homework and pay attention to the syllabus, you will easily pass.
Professor Donahue is amazing and will make you laugh at least once every lecture. It is a lecture-heavy class each presentation was about 100 slides. Very clear instructions of what to do and when it's due. This is a very well organized course and will make you love learning psychology.
Although this was an online class, Professor Donahue has been one of the nicest and most caring professors I have ever had. The exams were a bit challenging, so make sure to read the textbook and watch the lectures. We had 5 papers to write but as long as you do it and follow his directions, it's an easy A. Definitely take any of his classes!
The class I took with Dr. Donahue was once a week and for 2 hours and 40 minutes. He gave us breaks and cracked a lot of jokes. His class had 3 major tests and the final. All which came with a study guide beforehand. I had to purchase packback, and the access code for the text book. Overall funny guy and great class.
Dr D is a no joke teacher, and you are going to be doing some work in his class. But you're not going to mind doing it one bit because what he is teaching is captivating and transformative! Take this class if you want to learn something really amazing that will greatly impact the way you see the world!! Dr D will expand your mind!!
I love Dr. Donahue! He clearly cares about the subject and his students.
I have taken three of his class. Dr. D really cares about what he is teaching. I have never used the textbook for his class. He provides TON of assignments making it difficult to even fail his class. I received a C instead of an F because of the amount of assignments. Nothing is necessarily difficult about the class just time consuming on occasion.
I loved Dr. Donahue's class!! He is such a character and his passion for the subject made me want to pursue it further.
Donahue is a teacher who really cares about educating young minds! Many times I would talk to him before class and he was genuinely excited to learn about his students. His lectures are long but bearable because of breaks and his demeanor. He gives quite a few assignments, but they are all meaningful and make it hard to fail his class.
Dr. Donahue was, and still is, one of my favorite professors. He has lengthy lectures which may be deterring but he is so funny and is just a sweet charismatic little old man. He tells great stories and honestly, I was able to pay attention and keep up with the material. As long as you go to class and keep good notes, you got it fr!
I had his 3-hour class and he made every single second interesting and fun. He is very open to learning new things about people and everyone and loves to demonstrate lectures (with your permission lol). Attendance is taken at the end of class (which is never a certain time depending on his mood). TAKE NOTES for all quizzes and tests.
Dr Donahue was great! Despite lectures being very long, he keeps you engaged with humor, making you think about the subject, or demonstrating the concepts of the lecture in real time with student volunteers. With the textbook reading, quizzes, and papers the class is a lot of work, but he makes it doable by helping you get invested in the topics.
He comes off as an intense professor, but he doesn't want you to actually fail. He gives lots of opportunities for extra credit toward the end of the semester. If you do all of the weekly assignments, you'll be fine. He basically gives everyone 100s on the papers. He's also really funny, so go to class.
Dr. Donahue is truly one of my favorite professors thus far. The best way I could describe him is magnanimous. Think of it as Danny DeVito with a Doctorate of Psychology teaching Intro to Psych. Absolutely hilarious, and really shows his passion for the subject every second. One thing: you absolutely must take notes. Before and after class!
I took this course online in a semester where I was taking 18 credits, so I didn't get a lot of personal time with him. Regardless, the material is interesting, he gives numerous helpful links to supplement information from each chapter, the exams are open book, and the review assignments are reasonable.
Professor Donahue is very eccentric in his lectures which made the 3 hour class go by smoothly. Paying attention and taking notes is vital because he will expect you to remember tidbits from lecture on your exam. Papers weren't too bad as long as you put in the research and did not cheat. If you're a psych major I would recommend taking this class!
DONT buy the textbook, i didnt use it. Lecture quizzes and exams online. gives you a 10 min break during the 4-6:40 class. he takes attendance towards the END of class so do what you want with that info... Expect weekly packbacks which is counted as hw but its pretty easy. Email Packback and ask for a waiver, you have to pay $100 to use achieve.
Dr. Donahue made the 3 hours go by quickly; he was passionate about the subject and just made it fun and easy to remember. He does take attendance at the end of each class, so make sure to be there. The textbook is helpful for quizzes. He assigns a medium amount of work but it's all easy. Probably one of my favorite classes ever taken.
He's the funniest professor, always got fun stories to tell and he always make class fun and the 2h always go by quick
Dr. Donahue was a great professor and super fun to listen to. Attendance is graded. The final wasn't cummalitive and it was just the last unit test instead of a overall semester test. There is a lot of busy work, but it's never too hard. All of the exams were online. He was a really easy grader (might have been the TA grading my stuff though)
Donahue's class is my favorite this semester. His lectures, while long, are very enjoyable and helpful. There are many assignments, but this means there are a lot of chances to improve your grade. Only downside for me was the textbook, which was required for a code and costs $120. Do what you are supposed to and take notes and you will get an A.
I loved Professor Donahue! Attendance is mandatory, but it is taken at the end of class. All tests are online, open-book, and remote, so you take them from your dorm. Always take notes during lectures (he doesn't allow laptops or any electronics). There are also tons of extra credit opportunities, and he's really lenient about missing assignments.
Literally the funniest professor I've ever had, class is easy as long as you go to the lectures and take notes.
super fun class, dr donahue is a great professor. lots of modules to complete each week but they do not take a lot of time. long lectures but he is very funny and it doesn't feel boring.
By far the best professor I have ever had at VCU. He made the 3-hour lectures fly by with his humor. He emphasizes engagement with the material by making you repeat stuff out loud or use your hands to demonstrate something. The syllabus is clear and concise with assignments, papers, and tests, making it an easy and enjoyable class.
Even though the lectures are almost 3 hours long, I look forward to them every time because he makes them so interesting and entertaining.
my favorite goat herder!
#1 goat herder!
Super fun professor! He made class so fun, it was very easy to pay attention to him. Only thing difficult about the course was the weekly discussion board posts. Don't procrastinate them and don't forget to turn them in. There were only a few writing assignments and if you followed the directions he would give you full credit. 100% recommend him!!
The professor himself is amazing. The class, however, is WAY too long. It is almost three hours long with one 10-minute break. Homework is manageable as long as you stay on top of it. Exams are difficult unless you study. Slides can reach up to 200 slides long. It's a LOT of information to consume in one sitting.
The lectures are pretty long, but Dr. Donahue makes them a fun experience. He loves making jokes throughout lectures. You'll usually have a quiz and a discussion post due each week, but the quizzes are open note and will sometimes have extensions for up to two days. As long as you attend classes and stay on top of your work, you'll be fine.
Dr. Donahue is lecture heavy with long slideshows. 3 exams the whole year and usually 2-3 assignments a week sometimes there will be another one thrown in on the first few weeks. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK!!!. Only buy the achieve code unless you use a textbook as a main study method. I didn't use it once the whole semester! overall recommend him.
The class is very test-heavy. Although the tests are open-note and open-book, they were still difficult. Packback is also used for discussion in class. There were four writing assignments. There are also lots of short quizzes within each module. Overall, it's not a bad class, but it's very heavy.
course itself was fine, not too hard but the work load matches the fact it's 4 credits. I took it once a week and he made the longgg lectures no problem, he's hilarious and so so passionate about teaching. his age shows a little on some more sensitive topics, but he never tries to offend and is an informed guy. love this man to death, 10/10.
Dr. Donahue is sweet, but for a 2hr and 40min lecture, he sure does yap a lot. I would recommend writing down your notes from his slides a day before so you can understand what he is saying. His tests are hard, but if you study, you'll probably be fine. Attendance is mandatory. READ THE BOOK HE WANTS YOU TO GET!!! There will be a test on it.
Donahue is very kind. I suggest taking his course online because he covers more in his recorded lectures than in person and he takes attendance and grades it anyway. He'll have you do your own research for topics on exams that won't be covered in the material, which is vague. Follow the study guides and read all of the links. It's a heavy course.
I liked Dr. Donahue, but be prepared to work! He covers a lot during the lectures but he also pairs a lot of concepts with anecdotes and his test questions are really intuitive, so if you pay attention and do the study guides then the tests should be no trouble. Biggest downside is the amount of stuff to buy like Packback and the textbook.
His lectures were often way too long for an online class. In many of them he included full length videos or would talk about something longer than necessary. Overall his tests were very hard but do-able I would take him if you really are interested in the material otherwise find another class. Online tests were taken in lock down browsers.
Awesome prof! Teaching style is great, funny, and engaging. He always make me laugh each lecture. 3 hour class so it can get annoying but I enjoyed it with the interesting material. Study bc 3 tests and they are not easy. Also 3 papers I believe but they are beneficial to learning and interesting. Great professor, take him.
The class was very unorganized. He had the exams in person but online, and the assignments kept coming in nonstop. Be ready to go to class; it's mandatory and long. No technology is allowed, so it's better to focus. The class has a heavy workload, so be ready.
tests were hard, assigned A LOT more work than other psyc professors, and had said questionable things during lectures.
This professor was one of the worst I have ever seen. He gave homework unrelated to the coursework that was needed for the class. All his exams have spelling and grammatical errors that he hasn't fixed. And when you ask him for help on an issue that happened and went through the correct steps. He does not care.
Overall, an ok class. I definitely think there are better professors. Quizzes and papers he gives out are ok, just time consuming. However, the tests are extremely hard. Most of the psych 101 teachers have their tests open-note, but not Donahue. It is doable, but if available try other professors.
Donahue is an amazing professor! Lectures are long, but very fun and often had a small break around the halfway point. He wants to see students succeed and as long as you read the assignment instructions and go to class, you should do fine. Some weeks were a bit more work heavy, so be ready for that. Overall, amazing course and professor! 10/10
If you are looking to understand the material, pick him! Assigns weekly take-home quizzes and some weeks are homework-heavy. He's entertaining so even though its a long lecture, it's not bad. In between every lecture he gives a 10 min break. Make sure to pay close attention to the instructions on the papers because he is very strict about that.
Do not take his online courses. Forcing students to pay (yes forcing, no way to earn grades otherwise) over $150 for a textbook and a discussion board platform is completely unnecessary and frankly exploitative. It's disrespectful to students who paid $1600 for this class and are already financially strained.
I took this course only having taken his 101 course. He is phenomenal. His classes are long and can be boring if you do not care about the topic. He keeps students engaged and gives 10 minute breaks. Attendance is mandatory and he is very big into very specific instructions on papers and such. The take home quizzes are a little wack but it's okay.
He's really passionate about the subjects he teaches (in this case, Sensation & Perception) & he definitely works to make class fun! Very particular re: assignment formatting, & very outspoken against plagiarism. Heavy workload, only take his classes if you're ready to put significant time & effort into assignments & reading the textbook.
Donahue is a great professor to supplement what you learn from the textbook before class. He explains information from the textbook in easily understandable terms and is very knowledgeable, entertaining, and passionate. All assignments, except the book review, are easily done in 1 hour max and the class is structured very well.
Dr. Donahue is an amazing person and teacher!!! You have to be ready to pay attention and take notes, but the material is interesting so that never feels like a chore. He is super funny and keeps everything entertaining and interactive. No complaints at all!!!!!!!
Dr. Donahue is very knowledgeable and cares a lot about this class. The assignments included some chapter quizzes due every Sunday, a few quizzes on canvas, and some writing assignments. The writing assignments tended to be very lengthy but were overall not difficult at all. There are 4 open note exams as well. Put in the effort and you'll be fine!
