Very nice guy, but he sucks at teaching! May of his explanations are confusing so my best advice is to use your textbook and get a tutor. Be prepared to write essays for exams and details he doesn't even go over in lecture. If you can take this class with a different professor, do it.
Overall, he is a good guy who really cares about his students.Tests are quite difficult, but it's very attainable to get a 100% one. However, you need to read everything he assigns. It reaffirms everything he explains. Overall, good teacher good guy, hard work. But hard work won't kill you.
Smart guy, wants students to do well, but was a bit unprepared at times. First test was incredibly difficult, but he realized that and was much more clear for the next two tests. Not an easy class and reading the text before class, and going to class are both necessary. Tests are primarily essays.
He is a great and intelligent person...however since he's new he teaching skills sucks. he probably just need more time.he does provide study guides but his test are difficult. He talks entirely toooo fast and its hard to keep up at time. read the book and answer the study guide questions. it helps a lot !!!
He's a really nice and very knowledgeable guy who really wants his students to do well, but his teaching skills weren't up to par, probably because it was his first time. He talks too fast and it's hard to take good notes in lecture. Heavily relied on the textbook. His study guides are VERY helpful though, so make sure to do them!
He wants nothing more than for his students to learn, and do well. He is new to teaching, but improving fast. Students wined and cried all semester because he expects you to actually READ AND LEARN SOMETHING! He is always willing to help if you are struggling. Gives extra credit and study guides. Expect to work hard and learn ALOT!
GREAT GUY, yes it was his first time teaching but he was very reasonable. Hot too! He gave out great study guides that helped me do really well on his exams. As long as you study and understand the material, you will do fine.
Here's the thing, he's a great teacher but you also have to put in work too. He doesn't take attendance but everything that's on the exams come from lecture so pay attention. His study guides are straightforward. It's a lot of memorization but you'll soon realized you've learned a lot after the semester is over. Bonus points cause he's dorky-cute.
This class requires lot of READING. Attend lecture regularly as there can be a pop-up quiz. Review sheet for exams are HELPFUL. Make sure you complete them. Exams aren't too difficult if you know your stuff well. Exams weighted heavily on ESSAYS.
Out of all my professors at Temple, I can say that I have learned the most in his classes. He requires you to WORK for a good grade. You need to keep up with the reading, come to class, and study hard for the exams. If you put the effort in, you will gain a lot from taking a class with him. Plus he's just a really nice, and fun guy.
Garelick is a super "nitty-gritty" professor, but he is a very intelligent & phenomenal man. Do not be intimidated by him! He is so eager to help students really learn. Tests are very challenging if you are not prepared. I studied for a week straight for each exam. Very worth it though, learned so much. Huge written essays on exams w few MC.
Dr. Garelick is an asset to the Temple University neuroscience program. He expects his students to actually engage with the material, which he mostly hand picks from academic journals. If you're serious about being a scientist, take his classes. He is a person sincerely interested in exploring the field to improve the human experience.
He's amazing! Fave prof @ TU. Super intelligent, passionate about science, and taking classes with him will prepare you to be a scientist! He expects a lot and will push you. Study hard for exams, like as almost hard as you would for a CST class (that's if you want an A). Don't miss lectures and take thorough notes! Plus, he's a total cutie.
He's a really good teacher. Of course some students wont like him, but they're also the one's not willing to put their part of the effort in. He really tries his best to make sure everyone gets the material, and puts the interest of student understanding over the interest of time. USE THE STUDY GUIDES THEY ARE PRETTY MUCH THE TEST.
Gives pop quizzes on the readings, pretty easy if you do the readings. Tests have essays, but once again aren't bad if you study for them. Learned more in his class than in my previous three years at Temple. Always in his office, if you go he will help you. Very nice.
He didn't teach me a single thing and I would not call him a teacher because of it. Talks way too fast, makes stupid jokes, doesn't care about the students. He's highly intelligent but that makes him unable to relate to students who aren't on his level.
I LOVE GARELICK. Seriously, yeah, he is a tough professor, but damn, he CARES about his students and truly wants you to succeed. He is the best professor I have had a Temple. It is really refreshing to have a professor like Garelick.
Garelick is the best teacher I've had at Temple. He is passionate about the material and dedicated to your education. Yes his exams are hard but if you come to class, study hard, READ EVERYTHING, and accept that you are expected to know everything even if he didn't explicitly cover it, you'll be fine. Attend office hours and get to know him.
Absolutely THE worst professor in the whole entire world. Really hard to understand lectures. Makes you feel stupid when you ask a question. Not helpful whatsoever. I have sent him emails asking questions and he has just completely ignored them. His tests have stupid details on them completely irrelevant to class. awful!!
He is a tough professor. Not the worst in the world, but he definitely expects you know to EVERYTHING for exams. You need to show up in order to pass because if you miss any classes you'll fall behind and falling behind with so much reading he assigns, it's going to be bad. If you want a challenge and love reading, take the class, but be prepared.
Tests are not hard but his grading is not fair. He doesnt respond back to emails. The things he teach is small point and things he didnt teach and you have to know (you learn the things he didnt teach after the test because in class he doesnt even mention) Also, he likes surprises thats why gives pop quizzes.
His classes are required for Neuroscience Majors, Taking Functional Neuroanatomy with him as well as other classes in the future. He is a very tough grader and talks really fast. Some recitation material that is not explained shows up on the tests. Expect to read a lot and d teach yourself. If you work hard, a B and even an A might be possible.
Garelick is a gem. He expects his students to act like empowered adults: read the material thoroughly, form a study group, and ask questions. If you're having trouble, go see him during his office hours and bring specific questions. He can come across as intense when he's discussing science, but he's genuinely kind and helpful.
He is nice but hard.
Let's be honest: he sucks. I didn't learn anything from his class. I had to teach myself EVERYTHING. Need to ask a question in class? Good luck. He will put you down and make you feel like an idiot. He is so unorganized and just reads from his little PowerPoint notes. He talks too fast, makes his exams too long, and is quite condescending.
Passed his class with an A, however, he was one of my least favorite professors. He is never able to answer any question you have, and when he doesn't understand the question he will make you feel stupid. He is very unorganized, and unclear about the material, wastes half of the class trying to understand what he is saying himself, tests are tough
Garelick was one of the hardest professors I've ever experienced at Temple. He is very thorough and I felt I had a good understanding of the material, but his tests don't reflect that. He gives essay formats, which if you don't answer in words he likes, you will not get credit for.
Hardest class I've ever taken and not because of the material, but because of the professor. He just doesn't teach at all. He spends 3 or 4 classes on the same topic because he tries to cram so much into his lectures that in the end you don't learn anything in detail for the exams. AND HE WANTS EVERY DETAIL ON HIS EXAMS! So it's a lose-lose for you
Hardest classes I've taken so far but you learn a ton that really prepares you for a future in neuroscience. Gives pop reading quizzes but just do the readings and you're fine. He's a good guy and cares- he's very willing to meet and answer questions patiently and in depth. Tests are hard but don't try to cram the night before and you'll be fine.
All of his classes are difficult and require you to do the readings and attend lectures. His exams are usually heavily focused on the essays and pretty in-depth. Keep up with the readings and study frequently and an A is definitely possible. Great guy, knows his stuff, and the pop quizzes are all based on the readings.
He is a really nice person, wants his students to learn from what he teaches not just pass them. Classes are hard but if you prepare, you can get a good grade in this class.
I can't stand him as a professor!!!! Always gives monday exams and pop quizzes every monday (even hands back exams DURING pop quizzes). He is apathetic towards students who obviously already have enough work as it is. Hopefully this is the last class I will have to take with him.
He knows his material, I will give him that. But how he talks to people is seriously lacking. I do not recommend him as a professor.
Dr. Garelick is an impeccable professor, and he teaches the most rigorous courses in the program. He is as intelligent as he doesn't like BS, and he will take great measures to help you understand the material if you do the work. There are entitled people who believe they deserve good grades and dislike that Garelick forces you to earn your grade.
Professor Garelick appears standoffi-ish at first, but he is willing to help you. Tests are extremely important to your grade, so be sure to prepare days in advance. He posts study guides that are basically outlines of exams and offers easy extra credit- he truly wants you to succeed. You don't have to purchase a book but read all BB assignments
Although tough, Professor Garelick is very passionate about neuroscience and truly wants his students to learn. His classes are challenging and require students to put in an active effort. His exams are not your typical science exams merely containing multiple choice. His essays and short answers require solid understanding of the material.
A hard professor but still incredibly personable. He comes off as an arrogant jerk because it's a tough course, but he's one of the most intelligent people I have ever met and is always available for his students. He will never give you a grade you don't deserve, a lot of effort is needed on your part, but what did you expect it's neuroscience.
I have truly enjoyed being in Dr. Garelick's courses! He is like the Mr. Ratburn character in the Arthur series -- totally terrifying at first, but you very soon will learn that he is truly preparing you to become the best neuroscientist that you can be. You will see him often in NSCI CLA. He is willing to help those who are serious scientists.
My college career would not be what it was without Timmy G. You will have a love/hate relationship with him. His tests are hard and stupidly specific, but you will actually learn neuroscience when studying and attending lectures (plus you'll get to hear lots of dad jokes). Go to class, do the reading and extra credit and you'll do great.
Dr. Garelick is by far the best teacher I've had. I took him for NBD and DPR. Both his exams and readings are difficult and specific. Anything he assigns is up for game on the exams/quizzes, must attend lecture. Keep up with the material you'll do well. A+ for humor.
Great professor! He's truly passionate about what he's teaching. Garelick wants his students to know and understand the material. His tests are long but if you study his study guides in depth, you'll do great. He doesn't ever try to trick you- just study hard and know what you're talking about. Best professor I've had at Temple.
Wanders off into verbose technical tangents, spends multiple lectures on one topic, and then hurries through others to get back on track. All quizzes are based on a close reading of 1-2 technical papers, BEFORE lecture. Essay grades are based on guessing which information he deems relevant. Just don't. Getting an A requires luck and all your time.
Garelick is a difficult professor. He goes through material quickly and doesn't follow his Power Points in order, which can be frustrating but it's not a huge deal. His exams are not multiple choice but I don't mind it because doing well on the exams shows that I've really mastered the material. He also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
He graded our last exam wrong and gave everyone a random score. Its 2 days before our optional final and he has not put up the last 3 quizzes, corrected exam 2 grades, put in extra credit, and we have no idea what our final grade is. How the h**l am I supposed to know if I should take the final if I don't know my grade.
Extremely vague grading for the exams. Some lectures fixate on one chapter for weeks and others rush through multiple. The expectations are unclear in the beginning of the semester and there is no way to prep for his exams other than to fail the first. The quizzes are bearable and the multiple choice is fair. felt like I was doing grad school work
He is a tough professor with hard tests that are composed of essays, short answers, and multiple choice. He is very particular about how he wants answers to be worded so make sure you pay attention to what he says and how he words things in class. Use his study guides and practice writing out answers to the essay questions for every exam. Read!!
PETTY GRADER. DO NOT INTERPRET MATERIAL. Word everything how he wants it & be sure to pay attention to grammar on exams. All exams have some M.C but mostly its short answer & essay questions. Be able to answer the study guide TO THE T & be able to right about each topic/question as an essay format. Try to get back exams fro old students.
I have had him 4 times now and he gets more relaxed as you go. I thought he was pretty cool until he called me out in front of the whole class and made me feel like an idiot during my final presentation in capstone but I digress. He's fine I guess.
Dr. Timothy Garelick is the greatest professor I have ever had. He inspired my love for the discipline required to be a successful student in neuroscience. YOU HAVE TO STUDY HARD FOR HIS EXAMS. HE IS VERY PARTICULAR BECAUSE NEUROSCIENCE VERY PARTICULAR. STOP COMPLAINING AND GET TO WORK!!!!
Yes, he does assign a lot of literature and is specific about word choice when describing complicated systems. But he does this for a reason- to prepare us for grad school or to work in neuro research. I have taken him for 4 courses and am truly grateful for the skills I've gained in his class and truly see their relevance in furthering my career.
Here is the deal folks. He is a prof who is tough. But you can't expect to get anywhere with easy assignments and easy teachers. Garelick is a high quality prof and if you put in the work you are guaranteed to learn and not just forget all the info after taking his class. No textbooks. He will give you answers in office hours. Study smart not hard
He rambles off topic often and speaks too fast in class to take notes. His slides are not helpful and only have pictures on them. The material is hard and he teaches the class as if we're graduate students that already understands the topics at hand. Make sure you go to class cause he'll give many pop quizzes in a row. His exams are all open-ended
Listen, this guy has a phd and thinks he can do whatever he wants. The material is extremely difficult, he speaks really fast in class to take notes, and the slides are not as helpful. Exams are essay/short answer based. I'm someone who believes that with hard work u can overcome any class, but the exams require too much work for a 50 minute class.
Honestly this guy makes an already difficult subject downright impossible. His slides are literally useless, incoherent jumbles of pictures and random bullet points which may or may not actually describe whats on the slide. Tests are pointlessly difficult and all open-ended. Speaks way too quickly and goes over same material 3-4 times redundantly.
He's the toughest professor I've had for my major and continues to give me headaches. However you word things on exams is never enough and you have to be extremely specific, but that's neuroscience I guess. He makes you feel like an ass for asking questions and talks too fast. Expect grad school-level work, 'nuff said.
If you do the readings before class, it's really not that hard. His class is not grad-school level. I literally shout out for him to slow down, or will interrupt him to ask questions. He is really cool about it. He likes class to be a dialogue, not a monologue. If you're confused, you gotta ask. He's not a mind reader. He is a nice, awkward guy.
Professor Garelick is honestly one of the best professors at Temple, and doesn't deserve the bad mouthing he gets on here. His teaching style is different than most, but you walk away from his classes with so much knowledge. He makes you work hard for your grade, which does require a lot of effort, but it's so worth it. He is awesome.
tests you on material he doesnt teach and isnt covered in readings. Puts quizzes up so u can print them out and bring them to class, but doesnt tell you when you need to do that. Lack of communication. Worst teacher ever. If you have to opportunity to NOT take him for any class I would highly suggest doing that.
Garelick is an awesome professor. Is this class easy? No, but doable. The exams are mostly open ended but he provides you with a study guide, complete that and you're golden. He gives so much extra credit on exams, quizzes, and optional assignments. he truly cares about the success of his students. He's also funny. Will be taking him again. :)
Good professor but grades hard. Most tests are majority open-ended and require in-depth explanations on even the little things. Basically have every little bit of information memorized because every little detail is necessary to get a decent grade on his tests.
Inconsistently difficult, pending his mood. He speaks way too fast, covers things with different amount of detail, expects you to know everything. His slides don't have words so write fast. Exams are too long for 50min. Lost a point bc I said "inhibits"- he corrected it to "blocks". He's an ass in emails, late daily, and goes time wasting tangents
He's the most disorganized professor I've ever had, but I did learn a lot from him and credit a lot of what I learned in my major to what he taught. Get ready to read a lot and not understand much of what he's teaching in class. I never found his office hours helpful but some did. He was very considerate when classes went online due to COVID-19.
Tell me why I am 1 year post grad and still have nightmares about him.
Garelick: -doesnt deserve the bad reviews -teaches u to learn independently w primary resource readings -explains things clearly & sequentially -cares ab questions -can seem grumpy but doesnt mean harm If u study well (recite pathways, go thru reasoning, understand the story) youll do well. I still remember material from DPR 1 yr later
He really isn't that bad. I'm on my 3rd class with him and have done well in each of them. He does a great job breaking the concepts down and will help you if you need it. Just go to lecture, read the readings and take the quizzes and you'll be fine.
This is a review of 5 classes I have had with Dr. Garelick. Primary flaw is unprofessional unwillingness (whether intentional or not) to get back to student emails, no matter their level of urgency. Part of bigger problem with the neuroscience academe where the goal is for the student to cram and regurgitate rote factoids. Good guy, poor teacher.
All of these reviews are true. If you follow what he assigns, you will learn how to learn as well as the neuroscience subject matter. He is disorganized and it does seem mood dependent. But the greatest concern is how he treats young women. He explicitly crossed professional boundaries with me and at least one other.
exams were okish but open ended were tricky sometimes, quizzes are easy to do if you did the reading but the issue is is that the reading were extremely long, is rude to students in class so that made me extremely anxious to ask questions, doesn't teach in live lectures and expects us to know everything, i only passed cuz everything was open book
The worst professor in the department, I have taken him for DPR NBD & TNS. He skips around on his slides, comes to class unprepared, and often gets distracted. I was afraid to ask questions in class because he gave off an arrogant vibe when answering questions. He was very mood-dependent. He talks down to you during office hours. Not very helpful.
Dr. Garelick is knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about most of the time. Were there times where he annoyed me or where I felt he was unfair? Yes. But overall, I learned so much in this class and credit it to him. You will have to work for it but it is possible if you go to class and keep up with readings.
Very disorganized and unspecific. The exams were difficult and class seems to depend on how his mood is that day. Powerpoint slides are not that helpful and he rushed in class. Unless you go to every class and take notes you will not do well. Don't recommend taking him.
One of the most disorganized and unhelpful professors Ive had. He is knowledgeable but doesnt know how to teach to where the students will understand. He also is rude in office hours depending on his mood. I advise you to not take him if you can pls
FWIW, wanted to provide insight from someone who had to call on their TU Neuro knowledge in graduate school. I took every CLA Neuro course including all of Dr. G's classes. Afterwards, in my graduate-level courses elsewhere I realized that I was over-prepared. If you can get past the awkward facial expressions and downspeak, it's worth it.
Good person but not so great professor. He could be funny in class but his exams are dreadful. He's accessible during office hours and I would recommend going to them if you need anything in terms of class content. I still wouldn't take him again in the future.
He's incredibly OK. For more classes than I can count, he spent like the first 10 minutes of the lecture talking about things completely irrelevant to the class, then got surprised when we ran out of time to talk about more content. There are "pop quizzes" so Please be sure to read the assigned readings
Garelick gets a lot of hate but I think that's bc people don't actually want to do the work, he's not that bad. His exams are tricky bc alot of it's open-ended but his quizzes are easy as long as you read. He offers extra credit by % point so you could get 3 extra points on your final grade average. Take the time to watch his lecture videos.
Very good with work. Things can be a little difficult at times. People say that he is the worst professor but I think they are just saying that because he makes people work for their grade and it not be handed to them.
Dr. Garelick is one of the goofiest, most hilarious professors I have had at Temple. He is a complete dork who definitely overfocuses on irrelevant topics sometimes - but you can tell its because he just gets so excited to teach them. Overall, great guy who teaches tough classes material-wise, but read, go to class and you can 100% do well.
I've had Dr. Garelick for four NSCI classes and can say he is a fantastic professor. It is frustrating how much time in-class he wastes on unrelated topics, but when he gets into lecturing, they are top-tier. The exams are challenging, but you will come out a better student. Pick his brain, the guy is incredibly smart with real-world experience.
I really enjoyed NBD. Dr. Garelick is a great professor, he gets side tracked often but I appreciate the level of depth in his lectures. Useful readings, he selects journal articles instead of textbooks. Super interesting course and if you complete all the readings you'll do well.
He is very knowledgeable guy but does not know how to teach. The class was difficult because material was not portrayed in a clear way, he would talk extremely fast and he was often disorganized. He is rude in class and during office hours but nothing horrendous. Harsh grader on essays questions on the exams. Thankful for the Extra credit.
I took many classes with him and it's time to give Mr. G justice. Does he spend a ridiculous amount on the tiniest details? Yes. Is he all over the place? Also yes. However, he knows his stuff and he really tries to explain it. If you missed something, his office hours are very helpful. I learned a lot of things from him.
Dr. Garelick is extremely knowledgable in neuroscience and such a fun professor. His lectures are always super interesting, and he always covers the material that will be on exams thoroughly. He does give pop quizzes, but they are super easy if you just do the homework/readings. You NEED to go to class if you want to do very well.
Probably a nice guy and he's very very intelligent.. just absolutely should not be teaching in any capacity. His lectures are disorganized and he either blows through content or wanders so far off topic you can't even remember why you're there. I was excited about this class but I didn't learn much because of him.
He is a very disorganized teacher and it is clear he knows a lot about the topics he's teaching. I recommend reading everything he assigns and then going back to his office hours to confirm what you read because it is terminology heavy! Try to have organized notes and create big pictures maps filled with everything that has been taught so far.
Professor G. is basically unreachable by email, he goes on 5-20 minute tangents in class that have no relation to the material at hand, he deviates from the published schedule within the first week of class, and does not update the schedule but has pop quizzes based on readings, however he would never clarify the content or timing of the quizzes.
Took him twice in my undergrad, and honestly he is a really un-passionate tenured professor that goes on tangents lasting 10+mins, making him a lackluster lecturer. Could touch on really amazing things in neuro, but classes were monotonous and I never looked forward to the class. Pop quizzes frequently, but it's so you'll go to class, they are easy
If I didn't have to, I would not take Garelick. He's a touch grader on exams, and almost inaccessible outside of class. I enjoyed the material from the class, but he is just not a good teacher, doesn't know how to convey the material to students. In office hours, he will talk down to you instead of helping you understand the material better.
A lot of students complain about him. However he makes it very clear what you should do to succeed in his class. Once students learn that attendance isn't graded they only come to class when there's a quiz or exam. If you do the readings before class and look at the pre-recorded lectures like he says you will do well. Only way to pass tbh
Funny dry sense of humor. He is a bit of a tough grader but once you understand his guidelines/grading criteria it kinda of makes sense.
Very smart and you can tell he knows a lot about neuroscience. He goes on long tangents and only lectures for about 1/3 of class time. Some topics are weeks-long and others last one day, so you never know what's important to know for exams. Doesn't update reading schedule and changes things super last minute. Only graded by 3 exams and pop quizzes
might actually be the worst professor i have ever had. drones on about grade inflation and then uses it as an excuse to not give students points when due. unfair grader on exams and quizzes, expects students to use the exact terminology that he would use to answer questions, which is not exactly fair for an undergraduate level course.
This man is the worst instructor I've ever had tbh. I got my grade through self teaching the material because he chose to go on irrelevant tangents during class ex-Ned Flanders neighborand is practically inaccessible outside of class. He single-handedly is contributing to grade deflation by grading harshly and not giving points when points are due.
