Good thing: if you show up, he e-mails you the notes so you don't have to write them. Bad thing: exams are VERY DIFFICULT and hard to prepare for. He doesn't cover everything from the exams in class. Lots of reading. But you will definitely learn alot.
He is one of the most challenging professors I have encountered. He doesn't cover everything on his exams in class, but the good thing is he distributes his questions in advance. If you prepare those questions in advance, then you are okay.
All that you have to do to suceed is attend class (because he emails you the notes) and be there for the discussions so you have some background about each of the texts for the test. The study sheet distributed prior to the test made it easy to prepare 4.
Easy teacher. One rule: show up to class. If you do, you get all his notes via email. Participation was 30% of your grade. Not bad at all. Tests weren't too bad. Midterm/Final kinda guy.
A great teacher, although bring your earplugs as he has a tendency to get a bit loud. You must be willing to read for this class, or you are truly cheating yourself. Exams are not too difficult, if you put some effort into it. Make sure to participate!
This is refering to his writing intensive class. He requires three 5-6 page papers and he is tough grader. He has his own guidelines of what he thinks is good writing and you have to fill that niche.
not helpful and not understanding...grades for errors and not content
good tchr.W.int. 3papers u choose bsd on the designated readings(~1.5-2 weeks).no tests or final. just rd,disc,3papers(NOT Fixed in lngth~3-5 pgs)-follow "ten commandments" & u'l b fine. 1 who lets u think cr 4urself- doesnt dictate or impose on
Very nice professor who turns undergrad classes into grad level classes. Gilfoyle places pressure on students to participate because 30% of the class grade is participation. Students will say absurd things for the sake of participating.
hahahha this guy is a hoot - talk about easy... total pushover with no substance....take his class for an easy "A"/
This guy is a great guy. He speakes his lectures with great enthusiasm, you will not fall asleep! His class is easy as long as you read the assigned readings and particiapte. Gives you a study sheet before both exams so you know what you have to study. Great class, I would take it again
This class was great! Professor Gilfoyle enhanced the lectures with slides and movie clips and handouts. He focused on people and interesting events instead just on dates and battles. Three papers which we could do at any time in the semester and could be rewritten until an A was earned. I highly recommend this class!
Professor Gilfoyle's passion for history makes him an excellent teacher. His lectures are great and he is very clear. He's not out to "get you" and he wants you to be successful. He'll let you rewrite papers until you get an A. You do have to participate in class b/c its part of your grade. This class was challenging but worth the time. Take it!
great professor!
Excellent Professor! Very clear, concise and interesting. He was very helpful in the major paper we had to write - he returned the rough draft with a cover letter and an elaborate explanation of what he expected in the final paper. Highly recommended. Not the easiest professor in the world (difficult final) but certainly worth the effort
Very intelligent, very engaging, not easy as other posts say but worth it. Young thinking, "with it". I wish all profs were like him.
Gilfoyle rocks! Nice guy, approachable, not a hard grader at all. You have a major paper and ALOT of reading, but definately one of my favorite teachers ever. I am taking another one of his classes next semester.
Interesting class, good professor but there are a lot of readings. Take-home final, and the lectures are pretty engaging.
THIS MAN WAS SO BAISED. EVERYTHING EVEN MODERATELY CONSERVATIVE WAS BAD. HE GAVE NO GUIDANCE ON HOW HE WOULD GRADE THE MIDTERM OR FINAL. REFUSED TO MEET WITH OR ANSWER EMAILS FOR STUDENTS REGARDING THE MID TERM OR FINAL. PERTICIPATION WAS A THIRD OF THE GRADE AND YOU ONLY HAD CERTAIN DAYS TO PARTICIPATE.
Gilfoyle rocks. Great discussions. Students are allowed to present ALL sides to an argument and he respects all points of view. Easy grader and very interesting professor overall. Also picks interesting things to read. LOVE HIM!
Here's the thing: Do you care about your GPA or about the material more? Gilfoyle has great lectures and interesting discussions, but his midterm and final are unclear. Not realistic to read all the books in the time given with your other classes, and he grades harshly. He is a writer, and he expects you to be one too. Take at your own risk...
Dr Gilfoyle is one of the best history teachers I have ever taken. His lectures are solely based on his notes he presents on Blackboard. His test are fair and extracted from the readings. Make sure you attend class, if you dont attend class, you will not recieve the notes. Overall, you will most definintly get an a if you read. Good luck
Dr. Gilfoyle is one of the best professors at Loyola. I learned so much in his class. He is invested in the class and students. He is a passionate lecturer and he makes class interesting. If you go to class, do the readings, and give effort, you will succeed. Grade based on discussions on the readings & in class essays that he gives you before
I don't really understand the ecstatic ratings of prof. gilfoyle. Class was boring and difficult to want to go to. sure i got a good grade but at the expense of being bored to tears 3 days a week.
-super easy- go to class, look through the readings and your are almost guaranteed a good grade in the class. Lectures are alright, he is Irish so sometimes you get some funny phrasing of things. I took it over the summer, and for the second half of each class we would watch a documentary, which I have to say was -super- dull. EASY core.
Gilfoyle is a nice man who teaches history in a different way from most teachers. There are only two exams, mostly made up of ID's and an essay. The class is pretty easy, however, comes with a lot of reading, and he expects a lot of participation in order for you to get a good grade.
If you show up for the lecture, he will email you the 10-12 pages of notes. Theres a discussion lead by graduate students over the ten books you have to read in a semester. One midterm, one paper and a final is all that goes towards your grade. Okay class if you like history but a LOT of reading.
Prof. Gilfoyle is a cool guy. He connects everything really well in his lecture and you can tell that he really knows what he's talking about. He shows a lot of examples and tries to make things interesting. You have to read all the the books though (there are a lot!) I hate history but almost looked forward to going to this lecture!
Nicest man you will ever meet, he seems to really care. Knows his stuff really well. The Midterm makes you feel horrible but the final replaces that grade if you do better as the overall grade in the class (plus it's a take home!) so the class is relatively easy. You learn a whole lot. It actually made me like history more.
Even though it's incredibly hard to get an A, one of the best professors you'll ever meet. Midterm sucks, take home final should make up for that. No textbook, just novels (that you probably should read and participate in the discussions). If I had the chance, I would not take him again though...it's just too impossible of a class to ace
Super nice guy - clearly passionate about what he teaches. Fairly interesting lectures - sometimes a little boring. If you read the books for discussion you'll do fine on the midterm and the final. I'd say take him. I've learned a lot.
This man absolutely loves what he does. His passion for history makes the class interesting. I actually managed to get an A without reading anything (very hard to do.) I recommend this class, I learned a lot.
An amazing story teller. Uses pictures and videos to keep it interesting. Attendance is key to take good notes, and keeping up with the readings too. Discussion gives you points. Midterm was hard, but the final and term paper made up for it. Got an A in the class.
Gilfoyle is really nice, but he requires far too much reading for a 3 unit class. I don't get where all the positive reviews are coming from. I'm a good student and I found this class nearly impossible. I think he kind of expects the class to be your everything...no consideration for your other classes.
lots of reading! must attend class! very interesting class. not too easy though. participation is worth 30% the rest of the grade is just between the midterm and final. hes very understanding. he replaced my midterm failing grade with the A from my final and i ended up with an A- in the class.
good guy but way too much reding. better show up or it'l kill your grade
This class is amazing! He knows his stuff and gives an entertaining lecture. Super easy, if you don't mind reading a lot. Deffff need to go to discussion class, where an TA prepares you for the midterm and final. If you go to the lectures, the TA sends you the notes for the class via e-mail afterwards. Honestly, it was a great class.
Great class! Gilfoyle frames the information in a very interesting manner. No text book, but 6 or 7 short books throughout the semester. Discussion attendance is where you get your participation points.
Love the class and the teacher. He makes history so interesting and relevant to today. We don't have a textbook, rather many shorter readings throughout the semester. It is a lot, but if you split it up over different nights, it is completely manageable. I hope I can take another class with him.
go to lecture to get lecture outline emailed, read a book every week and go to discussion (worth points) Midterm: in class writing, Final: 8-12 page essay & in class part. Will drop midterm grade for final. lectures are interesting. Gilfoyle is super nice and teaches stuff more interesting than any other history class. show up and get a good grade
HISTORY MAJORS- avoid this class, you will not learn a single thing. The overall workload is ridiculous and the final paper is really hard. I got easy A's in the prior 5 history classes i'd taken but this one was a VERY tough B. Lectures are boring and the TA's notes are not good.
He is amazing!!!!! If you go to class he sends you the notes there is only a midterm and final, whichever you get a higher grade on he doubles! I would honestly take him again!
If you show up, he sends you the lecture notes so you don't have to take notes in class. The discussion classes were very boring, but easy.
I absolutely loved this class. Professor Gilfoyle and his junior professors were fantastic. You do need to read all the books that are assigned, they are CRITICAL for discussion and the midterm/final. I'm not a history person but I would take this class again in a heartbeat.
I hate this class so much. He makes you read eight books throughout the semester and you have to mention every one in your essay or you get points off. He sends out the lecture notes and the questions that will be on the exam prior which is nice but his lectures are the most boring thing ever. Also you don't get notes if you don't come to class.
I hate history because I am so bad at remembering names and dates. With Gilfoyle, you don't need to memorize anything. As long as you pay a little attention, have a general understanding of the lectures, and skim the readings (they really aren't too long) you'll get an A. Gives you questions for the midterm and final in advance! Super sweet guy.
For the tests and final paper you need to use a ridiculous amount of text references. His grades are based on text and lecture information. Also in class participation is KEY. My grade went from an A to C+ because of in class participation. Nice teacher, and provides a lot of notes when he grades.
Worst history class I've ever taken. Gilfoyle and his junior professors structure the course so that it's unreasonably difficult to receive an A. The lectures are boring, the workload is excessive, and the professor himself can seem rather pretentious. Avoid this course.
Difficult class , but the professor was very friendly and approachable. Expect readings, a midterm, final, etc. If you do better on your final than on your midterm, he drops your midterm and counts your final twice; participation is weighed heavily on your final grade. Gilfoyle is a likeable guy, but expect a harsh workload when taking this class.
Lectures are always efficient. He helps you prepare for the miderm. Readings are long but are helpful for midterm and final.
Lectures are efficient and interesting. There is no textbook for the actual class, only readings for the discussion section. Instead, his lecture notes are sent to everyone who attended the lecture afterward, so attendance is pretty vital to doing well in this class. All of the assignments for the class are graded by his TA's FYI
I dislike history and this class made it SO bearable!! You're supposed to read 8 books in the class, I got an A with just skimming each book bc the discussions tell you everything you need to know about them. Final paper is 8-12 pages and that's basically the only writing you do. He tells you everything you need to know for the midterm/final.
Only discussion group is required to attend. Professor Gilfoyle is very passionate and a great teacher. Class is graded easily, would definitely take as your history tier 2 credit
One of the best prof. I had. He assigns 7-8 books, which made this class a nightmare. He drop the midterm if you score higher on final. Exams include essay question, IDs, map or picture. Grades them easy and gives the questions beforehand. You HAVE to participate in the discussion to get points. Don't take if you hate reading a lot of books.
Dr. Gilfoyle is a great choice for US history. Show up to class if you want his lecture notes. There is a discussion section with his class, but it's not bad at all! Just say at least one thing per class. His midterms and final are graded by his TA's, so they are pretty easily graded. Overall, if you study and do the readings, it's a fairly easy A.
Not good at history and got an A. If you come to lecture you don't have to take notes because your TA will send them to you. TA does most of the direct teaching. One midterm (study for that!), a final paper you will have a month to do and get feedback, and a final (study!), readings too but I just sparknoted them and was fine. Solid choice.
I absolutely loved this class. The lecture notes are sent to you if you go to class, which is really nice. I loved the lectures, they were very engaging. You are graded by a midterm, a final, a visit to the Art Institute, and participation. The study guides are super helpful for the midterm and final. The books are super interesting too!
You have to make time to do the weekly readings and prepare for the midterm/final, also have to attend a mandatory discussion section every week. The midterm consists of terms, maps and a short essay, the final is a long essay, you get a month to do it. While the lecture days can be boring, if you can get through them this is a great choice.
Make sure you do all the reading and take notes! It all comes up in the final. I enjoyed the class. Some lectures could be dry but others were pretty interesting. You don't need to take notes, he emails you very detailed ones as long as you show up. The reading sucks but he gives you many chances to get an A
I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Gilfoyle. He wants you to get an A. You just need to do your work for it.
Worst core class I have taken! It is SO much work, if you do not like reading and writing you will fail. The final is an 8-12 page paper, identification questions, a short response AND identifying places on a map. I cannot stress enough how much work has to be put into this class in order to be successful. If you are not a history major AVOID
The class requires that you put in a fair amount of effort, but he gives you so many opportunities to get an A. Long paper (8-12 pages) but he gives you over a month to do it and you can turn in a rough draft for feedback and fix your paper to get an A. Exams are straightforward, and he gives you the questions in advance. He's also fun. Take him.
Dont take this class if youre a POC. Its beyond frustrating being in his lectures as he uses insensitive language and improperly frames history. Often avoids giving accountability to historical figures that caused a lot of damage. Doesnt acknowledge the impact of American colonialism when teaching. Overall, couldnt wait to get out of his class
How can you not love Timothy, he's soo passionate about history. His lectures are boring, but you don't have to pay attention or take notes to do well. There is also a lot of reading, but I know people who got by without doing most of it. There's only 2 tests, 1 long essay & extra credit. Take him for sure.
If you don't like to read I'd suggest not taking this class. Readings each week, and those are critical for the midterm and final/ essay. At the end of the semester there is a 10-12pg paper, along with a final exam. Participation is a must in discussion class. Gilfoyle knows history, and the class was really interesting. Gives a lot of extra credit
Prof Gilfoyle is a good professor. Very knowledgeable and his lectures are usually pretty interesting. The TA you get is more important, as will most history classes. I really liked my TA and the class was very manageable.
I took him as a lecture class and even though it was boring I learned a lot. He meets with all of the students after the midterm and offers advice on how to improve which really helped with connection considering it was a 150 person class.
Honestly one of the easiest classes I took this semester! Just pull a quick all-nighter the night of the test and you're good. The TA matters more because they are the ones grading but Gilfoyle makes it easy for you to improve your scores. Even though my TA was a really tough nut, I still got an A so.
Only 2 assignments: a midterm paper + a final. While this sounds scary, the prompts are very straightforward + as long as you have the required number of quotes you're fine. I got a 100% on both essays. He also allows for unlimited extra credit, meaning you could do 30 things related to history outside of class + bring a 70 to a 100
Although the class was Asynchronous, Dr. Gilfoyle was super caring towards his students, several opportunities for extra credit. The course itself might seem boring to some people but I personally found it interesting. Overall Dr. Gilfoyle is a great guy and if you don't do well, then it's your own fault.
Very passionate and interesting to listen to, but you are not allowed to take notes, so if you are an active learner that remembers information after writing it, and cannot remember the info of a long lecture without notes, I do not recommend it. Tons of reading.
He isn't awful, but he's not great either. You aren't supposed to take notes and there's a good amount of reading. The Jr. Prof. is the main reason I didn't bomb the midterm (and the final). The only grades are midterm, final, and participation in the discussion section. He argued about my accommodations some.
Timothy is very lecture heavy, and it is hard to comprehend what is being talked about in lectures sometimes. He does offer a lot of extra credit like a midnight bike ride. But, It is a hard class, and you only get like two grades in the class, midterm grade and final grade.
103 is lectures twice/wk and a TA-led discussion once/wk. You're not allowed to take notes during lectures because he "provides his own". They're just transcripts of the lectures and didn't help me at all. There are VERY few grades in the class: midterm, final (8-12p paper), + discussion participation. If you don't do the readings, prepare to fail.
I LOVE Professor Gilfoyle. He is genuine and very passionate about what he is teaching. He gives very structured and clear outlines to what you will be assessed and graded on. The readings were super interesting, and I feel like I learned a lot. Definitely take this class if you have a chance.
Lectures twice a week that you don't have to pay attention to they're super boring. You get notes if you show up but if you skip it's nbd. Once a week you have discussion about readings (50+ pages a week) -- don't skip those and actually do the readings. Midterm and final is A LOT of studying but if you follow study guide then you should get an A
This class took a lot of little tedious work to do well in, but I did pass with an A. The midterm and final take a lot of studying and include memorized essays. The junior professor was also really great. The class is good if you're able to keep up with the readings and pump out an 8-12 paged paper on them.
This class is structured so you come to lecture 2x per week and have a discussion section with the TA's once a week. There are readings to do, but you can get by without them. There are hardly any assignments that make up your grade but they are EXTREMELY straightforward so if you put in minimal effort you will get an A. TAKE THIS CLASS FOR CORE!
Gilfoyle is a great professor but be prepared to fight the urge to fall asleep. The exams mostly focus on the outside reading rather than lectures anyways, but the lectures help with understanding the focus of the readings. No notes. Participation points are counted in discussion groups, which happen once a week. Gilfoyle is passionate and kind!
Two lectures a week with one discussion section as well. The lectures can be hard to listen to at times but you do not have to participate in lecture. In discussion, you have to come ready with notes from the reading to discuss with your peers. A is easily attainable as long as you participate and do well on the essays which aren't too hard.
Dr. Gilfoyle is such an easy professor but really cares! I came out with an easy A. Being completely honest I did not do many of the readings and was able to study for the midterm and final exams the night before and got an A on both. The most challenging part was the final essay which I spent about a week on and ended up with 14 pages or so.
His voice put me to sleep. Your grade is pretty much the midterm and The final is an 8 page paper that takes forever and has a lot of criteria, on top of an actual final exam. Lots of reading required for this class as well.
A wonderful and knowledgeable professor. He is open to learning new things from his students and provides great feedback on papers. He's supportive, the course content is interesting and unlike other courses I've taken at Loyola.
Gilfoyle is so kind and if you're interested in the topic of the class, you're in for a treat. There's only a midterm, a final (both easy A's) and a paper. He's accessible outside of class and wants his students to succeed.
I liked this class much more than the 103 class I took from this professor last semester. There's a ton of reading, and the midterm and maybe the final was a group trivial pursuit game? Everyone got like an A or A- on both i think though so idk what that was about. The class paper is pretty big, but you can kinda pick the topic, which is nice!
Professor Gilfoyle was amazing! His lectures felt like performances and you could tell that he was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about all that he was teaching. Graded only on a midterm, a final, and a final paper +participation in discussions. All you have to do is attend the lectures to receive the notes. Take this class!!
I loved this class. Lectures were entertaining and we got notes if we attended, all you had to do was show up. There were a few heavy readings we had to do for our discussion sections. His energy when teaching is really good and you can tell that he likes what he does. He made learning about history enjoyable.
I'm absolutely miserable in this course. It's a lot for a tier one class to say the least. His lectures put me to sleep, I spend more time watching the clock that I do listening to him. And its pretty discouraging how only 3 things affect your grade (midterm, final, participation) theres not much room for grade improvement. Don't recommend.
this class was fairly easy if you did the readings and participated in the discussion session. lectures can be very long and tiring but aren't mandatory. you will get lecture notes if you come to class though.
This class can be very heavy at times. It's a huge lecture, with a TA led discussion once a week. You get notes if you show up, and attendance + participation is mandatory in the discussion. Lots of books, but I got through with just skimming. Midterm = in person essay :/ Final is mostly take home & drops midterm is final is better. Decent core
I am in his big lecture group which meets twice a week then a TA discussion once a week. participation will come from your discussion based on your weekly readings. Of course Midterm and Final are also graded, but other than that, there are no other grades. So, its few but if you are good at US History this is an easy A.
I love prof Gilfoyle! Super sweet and is passionate with his job. Overall there was just the midterm and the final (if you do better on the final he drops the midterm and only takes your the better score) no homework, but had a discussion once a week. Gilfoyle gives many extra credit opportunities and I loved doing the art institute!
Professor Gilfoyle's class was very interesting. He gives really good lectures and there is no homework assignments. There is a weekly discussion (easy if you read the required texts) as well as a midterm and a final. He gives you good criteria to follow to make sure you get the grade you want on both. I highly recommend taking his class.
Dr. Gilfoyle is a great professor. His lectures can be interesting but I as a person heavily dislike history and being in his class wasn't bad. You pretty much only have the midterm and final which is an 8-page essay for your grades. Both are super easy. You associate with his junior professors more who are also great. Very easy class.
Dr. Gilfoyle is a very engaging professor that brought me to the interests of American history. His course ensures that the dark sides of history are not hidden, but also that the triumphs are celebrated. There were many political, cultural, and economic facts of interest that I took from this course.
Amazing Professor, I recommend him for an easy class. 2 in-class exams(with cheat sheet) and an 8-12 page final paper. Very easy class to take!
Class is comprised of lectures and he makes you add on a discussion class to your schedule. Overall, good class and he is passionate about the topics. There are very few assignments, making the midterm and final high stakes. However, both of the exams in the class are extremely easy as long as you do (some of) the readings and show up to class.
Dr. Gilfoyle is really an amazing lecturer. His lectures are easy to pay attention to. He tends to focus on the big picture more than details which can make it hard to truly understand a certain event. He doesn't grade papers, the TAs do and mine graded mine extremely hard, so beware of that. Too much reading and they were all so boring.
Professor Gilfoyle makes this history class engaging. Lectures are interesting, and the workload is manageable - just a midterm, final, and weekly discussion. Unstuck ai was super helpful for exam prep too.
Lectures aren't mandatory, but you get lecture notes if you show up. Grade is based on a weekly discussion, a midterm, and a final. The final is a 8-12 page essay, 2 maps, 2-3 identifications(5 sentences each) and a short essay based on 3 historical comics. You're given lots of time to prepare and a cheat sheet for the exams but it's very demanding
Dr. Gilfoyle is super passionate about history, and you can tell he really loves what he teaches. Even though the lecture has about 100 students, he makes it feel personal and engaging. Most of the learning happens through your TA in discussion. You get a study guide for exams.
Genuinely the most passionate professor I have ever encountered. I have always disliked history, but love his class. His lectures are amazing. Study guides tell you exactly what is on exams and you get a cheat sheet. A bit heavy on reading but what history class isn't. He also offers extra credit. Take him!
Very caring prof for HIST 385, be aware that he formulates final grade off of very few assignments. Collaborative midterm can be very bad if your teammates do not prepare well, but he only grades on a scale from A to B-. He comes down a bit hard on the final and it is quite long but you are given substantial time to prepare.
Dr. Gilfoyle is a very nice and intelligent professor! He and the junior professors that lead discussions for this class are all very passionate about presenting the various perspectives throughout history, which creates very interesting lecture material. I do not usually enjoy history classes, but I recommend taking his class!
Professor Gilfyole is pretty cool it's just the class is extremely demanding for it being a 100 level class. The Ta(s) are also extremely tough graders it's honestly just too much for a core class. I do not recommend if you're not a history major.
Dr. Gilfoyle's American Pluralism class was easy to follow with few assignments. Teaching assistants facilitate the discussions -- my TA was an easy grader and understanding with attendance. Only assignment that was annoying was the final take home essay which was 8 pages minimum. Otherwise, exams were straightforward, plus cheat sheets allowed.
As a non history major LOVE HIM. as long as you attend all your discussion sections (1x week) with your TA and go to 2/3s of the lectures (2x week). He tries to make his lectures entertaining which is nice since its history, but the readings are what is most important and they are very manageable, midterm and final both worth 35% also very easy.
Really enjoyed Professor Gilfoyle, his lectures were really good and extremely interesting. Taught history from an unbiased and woke perspective and I loved it. Final was a 10 page essay with 35 pieces of evidence plus we had an in person final with a couple question, which seemed kinda like a lot for a tier 1 history but nonetheless, he was great
Mr. Gilfoyle is a nice teacher, he clearly cares about his students. He gives extra credit opportunities. However, this class is unnecessarily hard for a core class. Assigned readings every week. No homework, but you're supposed to attend discussion sections which check whether you read the books or not. Also the final is super hard.
