Lectures interesting but arrogant, pointless assign. and unclear.
stupid assignments that make no sense but BEST course ever!
hard but super interesting, although that may just be the subject material...
Great sense of humor! Fair about marking and clear about what is expected!
Funny movies but the worst assignments I've ever had.
Hard marker, good sense of humour, interesting lecturer, really knows his stuff.
Great guy and super interesting lectures, HARD marker!
Love the Robe!!
Not for someone who is more concerned with a GPA than an education. :)
Great Prof, very helpful, but very high expectations for the class
Good sense of humor. Hard, but great if you really care. Knows his stuff!

Very hard course, but well worth it. He knows what he's talking about
Rude, arrogant manner and pointless assignments. Don't bother.
hardest marker ever, but great lectures. Dude knows his stuff.
This guy knows how to make a class interesting! His class is hard work though - he challenges his students.
He should have "hardest class ever" on the front of his course syllabus. This is a ridiculous class. Cares more about if we know about a medieval plough than getting a decent gpa. He does know an awful lot though.
Dr. Haskett really loves and knows his subject, he is a medievalist to the core, even in his marking which is definitely a little harsh. You will learn a lot in this class and will also appreciate his sense of humour if you can last the course.
He is a difficult marker and the course work is loaded. I saw half the class leave the first day after reviewing the syllabus. But if you stick with it, you'll find he's very dedicated to medieval studies and you'll walk out of that class educated.
Brilliant, funny funny man. Hard marker, but once you figure it out, you can do very well. SO worth your time if medieval history is your thing. AWESOME.
Hard marker, but very knowledgable. If you enjoy medieval history, he's your man.
Best professor ever. Hard marker, but it forces you to really learn your stuff as you're supposed to. I would say best professor at UVic.
funny guy, but a hard marker..,interesting class
Dr Haskett's class was amazing. How can you not fall in love with a guy who can take himself seriously while wearing academic robes? The folks who say his class is too hard pulled the classic routine and didn't do the work. It was a challenge, but a fun one! We're here to learn, after all.
Dr. Haskett has the rare ability of challenging his students to the maximum and actually getting the very best out of them. The first time he gave me an A (only worth 3%) I could have died happy. You may never give as much, or learn as much again. Excellent prof.
Best class ever. Extremely hard, but challenging, really makes you learn where your weaknesses are and he helps you improve them. He's a wealth of knowledge. Probably the best teacher at UVic, how we got this guy, I'll never know. Highly recommended if you want to improve in your writing skills.
Haskett is a great teacher, definatly knows his stuff, but the class is intenesly hard. He has a way of being so straigh forward with assignments and the exam that its enough to horrify you, but if you are interested in the material he is definatly the best prof for your money
Very hard. Oddly enough this was the first university-level class that I ever took. Even though I didn't do that well in this class I learned a lot and my writing skills improved tremendously. His lectures are often quite funny and he is very smart.
Dr Haskett is a true scholar and a real teacher; he challenges you to think and in the process challenges you to challenge yourself. He is always fair and rewards with good direction and intellectual support if you make a sincere effort to engage the material. You learn respect for scholarship. He also has a brilliantly quirky sense of humor.
Awesome prof - good fun but lots of work...

Fascinating and inspiring instructor. Very clear about course expectations. Challenges you to excel and to exceed your own expectations. Students that commit to the topic(s) and to the class, especially through participation, can expect to be rewarded with lively and engaging discussions as well as good marks. Best prof I have ever encountered.
snide sense of humour
Amazing person and teacher. This is what university is about. Thought of as "T-Money" in my head.
Amazing teacher really knows what he's talking about but a really tough marker, easy class to pass but a very hard class to get a good grade in.
Great professor and a wonderful Class. He is confident, engagging and very helpful. Students who participate and put the effort into the course will be rewrded with great marks. It is a fun class to take, wealth of knowledge for people interested in European history and I can hardly wait for another class with him.
Haskett uses visual and audio aids to ensure the class goes by smoothly, and key portions are memorized. It was a condensed class, 3 hours twice a week, but he never let it get boring and always had clear expectations and standards. Wonderful, informative and engaging.
Absolutely phenomenal prof. His class is exactly how every clss should be. Hillarious, engageing, and yet challenging and thought provoking. I cannot say enough good things about this professor and the way in which he cares so much for his subject and his students.
I found Dr Haskett very friendly, interesting, and engaging in H 236 so I took his H 380D course. And unfortunately, discovered his pretentious, pompous, closed-minded side. He is very excited and interested in history but does not keep an open mind to new and differing ways of viewing history. He prefers regurgitation to free thinking.
This class was incredibly interesting, but very challenging. I liked Dr. Haskett and his style of teaching, but he's a hard marker! And like many intelligent people, Haskett is a bit arrogant and opinionated. Still, I recommend him and HIST 236.
This class was extremely challenging, but enjoyable. Professor Haskett was extremely helpful, and kept classes interesting.
Highly skilled, and knows a lot. HIST 236 is a little too religious for my taste, but overall, a good teacher.
Dr Haskett knows his subject thoroughly and is a demanding prof. If you are an intellectual or like challenges, you will enjoy his classes. Of all the classes I have taken with him, I would recommend most highly Hist 380D, although 380E is also "wonderful stuff," as he would say.
Dr Haskett is a pompous, arrogant man who has let his academic career slip by while creating a cult of personality with naive undergrads. He is an embarrassment to what is otherwise a fine department. His reputation precedes him. Ask around.
Willing to meet with students to dicuss essays prior to due date and establish some key points. Likes to watch Monty Python when it relates to class material.
The class was interesting, and he is good, but he is an extremely brutal marker! There were three T.A.'s for this course. Assignments aren't a little difficult, sit down with him and get the assignment clarified!! The exams are brutal. Take copious notes and be prepared to work extremely hard! If you think this will be an easy mark, forget it!
Haskett is not the easiest Prof to get along with, but he is very obviously brilliant. The class is not simple, I had pages of notes some of which I couldn't read because I was writing so fast. It's hard, the papers are hard, but the class is interesting and he's a great lecturer. If you're willing to put in the time, it's an awsome class.
This is a tough class, do not be fooled by the fact it's only a second year class. There's lots of reading and he expects a lot, but he is a good prof, and a genius! If you work hard, do all the reading and attend the classes you will be fine.
A brilliant professor, an arrogant dork.
Haskett's course was arranged like a seminar. The syllabus states that he wished to take on role of facilitator rather than instructor- but he dominated most discussions. He's obviously a genius. Very interesting course work indeed. The man also wears a cape.. I don't know why nobody else has mentioned that yet...
Awesome prof! While he does have this unique sarcastic way of lecturing, he is NOT actually arrogant when you talk to him during break or after class--which you really should do if you're confused about anything, particularly the essays. Yes, he can be a bit intimidating to approach, but it's completely worth it.
Easily my favorite prof. He managed to keep 2 3hr lectures per week interesting. A cynical sense of humour that can come across as arrogance, but extremely helpful outside of class hours. Course was very analysis-based with no focus on outside research. A plus, in my books.
Without doubt the smartest academic I've ever studied under. If you can keep up with him and are prepared to work hard, then you'll learn a ton. Truly an encyclopedia of medieval history. Just don't say feudalism.
was really looking forward to this class and was SO disappointed. Lectures just reiterated readings and were super unnecessary and boring. Youtube clips and songs just made it longer. I stopped going and my grades improved
Haskett's classes are tough, and he does not suffer fools. However, if you are willing to work hard it is possible to get a good grade with him. It just takes considerably more effort than with most profs. He's a brilliant medievalist, and really knows his stuff, although some find his arrogance off putting. My experience with him was good though.
Toughest prof on campus, but highly entertaining and knows his stuff. And he's the silver foxiest.
He can be perceived as arrogant because of his sarcastic sense of humour but I think its a nice change of pace. He adds a lot of pop culture references to his lectures to keep you involved. He might be one of the smartest professors I've studied under so far. He can be a super hard marker on papers but he gives solid feedback and answers questions.
Hi, so i just took hst 236, and it was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Exams are really hard and papers are brutal. I regret taking this class.
Thumbs up.
By far my favourite prof so far. Incredibly witty and clever. Dr. Haskett is an absolute pleasure to learn under.
He is a very interesting lecturer, and makes medieval history HILARIOUS. Tests are very specific and on pretty much anything covered in lectures, so make sure you study a lot for the tests, and that you show up to class! He is very straightforward in his expectations, as well as essay outlines. All in all, one of the best history profs at UVic!
Haskett is probably the worst prof Ive had yet. He expected way too much from the Lord of the Rings class. His tests were ridiculous. The map test was especially terrible. Hard grader. Would not recommend.
He was a fine prof, if not a little condescending. Tests were easy enough if you study, with the exception of the map test, that was kinda wack. My biggest problem was that he keeps the lights off during lecture, so if you write with pen and paper your notes will probably look like chicken scratch when you go to review them.
Good overview of medieval history. But he also has a reputation for some not so good things. If you can ignore the bad then its worthwhile for a solid intro to the early medieval world. Doesn't really seem to care for students, doesn't really support accessible learning. Seems a bit more concerned about his own vanity project.
Haskett was fine but he was one of those "there are dumb questions" professors meaning you will probably love or hate him depending on your own preferences. I dropped his class a couple months in because I felt I was not taking in any of the information and since we had done no assignments I had no idea if I would be able to pass the course.
Dr Haskett is the professor I was desperate for in my first year. No nonsense, professional, a true scholar. The purity with which he approaches the medieval and history is admirable. In his class I always feel as though I am being pushed to the next level. A pleasure to learn under, so long as you are prepared to work hard.
HSTR236 was one of the hardest courses ive ever taken, made much much more difficult by Professor Haskett. I found him unapproachable and arrogant, and he was a tough and unfair grader. I have lost all interest in medieval studies, and would avoid this Professor if you want to continue enjoying this subject area.
The bland lectures made absolutely no sense and weren't even reflected in the final exams, which were obviously worded in a way to trip up students on purpose. I understand that online format is tough for some people, but shouldn't that be more of a reason to be understanding to students? I would not recommend this class or this prof.
Felt very discouraged to ask questions during class, he had the tendency to make ur q's feel inadequate. He has a very dated, strict lens through which he views the study of history, which I felt brought limitations. He also taught the course entirely from a Christian perspective, felt more like Christianity studies than a medieval studies course.
Dr. Haskett is clearly an intelligent man and knows a lot about medieval history. However, this does not translate well to being a good prof. Lectures were often hard to follow and for a 200-level class, it was exceptionally difficult. If you miss class, it is very difficult to catch up, and essays are graded very harshly.
These ratings really aren't it. Dr Haskett is always available outside of class to clarify expectations, give feedback on ideas, and explain material. For that reason, he's a tough marker. Dr Haskett's emphasis on solid academic writing and attention to detail have transformed how I approach the study of history. One of the best profs I've ever had
Dr. Haskett is obviously a very passionate man when it comes to the material, but often times in his class it starts becoming a game of I know better than you ever will. Grading was vague and not helpful at all, not worth taking the class. Also comments left on assignments were often condescending. I dont recommend his class.
Haskett clearly knows a lot about what he teaches, however, I think this results in a disconnect with students. COVID likely exacerbated this, and while I truly enjoyed the material, it was far too challenging and the professor-student gap was not closed by the professor. Feedback was sparse and confusing. Good luck if you take this.
He's passionate about the subject, but I found the prof and TA to be very arrogant and unhelpful. The feedback on essays was preposterous, condescending and unhelpful and the MC questions/ options are unnecessarily convoluted in their wording and they made no effort to help you understand how to use proper citations. I do not recommend this course.
Dr. Haskett is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches, however his lecture style can be very hard to follow, and asking him questions is very intimidating (especially in class- sometimes though class can be fun with some light humor). He is a tough grader, and leaves very little and unhelpful feedback on assignments.
Haskett is a brilliant prof & his theatrical lectures made this class the highlight of my last term. The first test was easy, but the second was the hardest test I've ever taken. The map test is not hard as others on here suggest. If you like Tolkien, take this class! Its brilliant.
He just thinks too highly of himself. He is a great lecturer, just not a great human being.
HSTR 336T was one of my favourite classes I have ever taken. The lectures were so fun and engaging and it was great to take a class that the prof is so clearly passionate about. Go to office hours! He's a lot of fun to chat with and is good to bounce ideas off, especially for papers, and going to office hours makes it easier to get good marks.
Very knowledgeable professor; great lecturer. However, he dates his graduate students or at least did when I was in university. And not older grad students, I'm talking women in the 23-25 range. This is pretty unethical even if it's not illegal. As someone else said, a good professor but not a good person.
Terrible Lectures, Hard to follow
So pretentious. Highest grade on the paper was a 75 and the average was a 65, very difficult to do well in his class. Plus... boring af.
Though its clear from even one class just how knowledgable he is, I found it difficult to follow his lecture style, which was very dense, and overly-worded. He was a harsh grader, and while his critique was often warranted, it also showed a very rigid and often aged mindset towards what academic writing should look like. Funny guy though.
If you like enjoyable lectures, understandable material, manageable reading loads, and a professor who is in touch with his students and welcomes questioks, take another class. You will find none of this in Prof Haskett. I have taken three classes with him, each time hoping things would be different next time, it never was. In a word, mind-numbing.
All the 4/5 star reviews are from the students he slept with lol
I found Professor Haskett to be extremely knowledgeable and likable. He was clearly extremely deeply engaged with the material. He was also engaging outside of class. His marking was the first I encountered that actually pushed me to write better essays as it was quite tough but very useful, and felt like he wasn't just pushing me through.
Dr. Haskett is EXTREMELY well informed on what he talks about, his lectures are engaging and always interesting. His grading is very difficult but he provides tons of feedback to allow you to improve your writing. Only graded on 4-5 things, so make sure it's good. Wouldn't recommend for a first year student because of how strict the marking is.
Worst prof I've ever had here, and his behaviour to some students is inappropriate.
