This teacher is relatively new to the university. But he worked out tons of the kinks in his teaching. He is understanding and treats students well. His teaching style uses little lecture and a lot of the workbook. But believe me when I say I learned a lot more about chemistry from his class than from any other professors. self-motivation required.
while i was in his class i didn't wnjoy it all that much and i thought it was really difficult the way it was set up but looking back and comparing it to my class this semister, his style of teaching and the class set up really made things clear and really solidified my understanding of the concepts. He is an excellent professor.
Overall a decent professor, he does a short powerpoint presentation first and then you work out of the workbook the rest of the class time. He is really easy to work with
I took AP Chem in high school, so most of the material was a review for me. The great thing though was that I learned the material much deeper with Tim (that's what he told us to call him). He bases his classes off of POGIL ideas (do a google search) and it forces you to learn the material and not just memorize it. I loved this class!
Worst professor ever. I asked for help once and he told me that I had to stop focussing on my other classes, which were equally as difficult, and only focus on chemistry. He is very unclear about the material in class and his tests are loaded with material not covered in class. I don't even know why Weber keeps him here. He's terrible.
This class was not an easy one! You must take notes or print out the power points and study them! He does grade fairly and the course was fun. You have to do one research project and give a ten min speech to the class on your subject but he will help you with it and it's a large portion of your grade. I actually liked him as a professor & the class
One of a kind class. Not alot of lecture, but more working in groups and almost teaching yourself. Attendance is not mandatory, but you get points for showing up. Gives you every opportunity to pass by giving easy extra credit, points in class participation and curving exam scores. I would take it from him again.
Dr. H is a great guy...But a horrible teacher. No lecture just working in groups teaching yourself the material. I honestly don't know why he gets paid, but like I said very cool guy just a lousy professor
Dr. Herzog is an extremely nice person. He truly cares for students and wants them to succeed. However, he gives out too much extra credit, rendering hard work as essentially useless. He also skipped nearly half of the textbook, which means that I have to teach myself the skipped chapters from Chem 1200 before I take Chem 1210. Still, nice guy!
Dr. H is a really smart professor that sometimes has a hard time getting the idea in his head to the class. Lots of group work and a cool guy. Pretty easy, chill class. I'd suggest having some previous knowledge though.
For me Herzog was really good because he gave us required daily online problems. It made me actually take the time to understand the material. He allows a full size page of notes front and back on all his tests (write small and you can get everything you need on it). Great guy, tries to help out but gets mixed up himself sadly.
It was an easy class, so it seemed that he gave us a lot of busy work, but It prepared me pretty well for 1210. Also had an interesting teaching style.
Unless you can teach yourself don't take it from him. Class itself wasn't that bad was just made harder than needed.
Gives quite a bit of busy work and needless online assignments. Does a good job lecturing and keeping you interested however. Graded on a couple tests, lots of online assignments (almost daily), and a one time inclass presentation. The presentation was easy, but there was little purpose to it.
Herzog is great! His class is super easy. He grades you on tests, easy online assignments, and in class participation. The material is super basic. You don't need the book.
The subject isn't bad, but the teacher requires you to do about an hour of homework online each night (which is an awful way to do chemistry homework). Further, in class he regularly forgets how to solve problems in front of the class, or worse, solves them wrong. I felt like attending his review sessions hurt more than helped my understanding.
Be prepared to spend time doing homework on an almost daily basis. He is very helpful if you go to him with questions. If you really want to learn Chemistry, you have to practice, and he insists that you do. Easier A than other professors IMO, you just have to try. Chem isn't easy, bottom line. He is a good teacher.
Professor Herzog is the best chemistry professor you can get. He is real and down to earth. He knows chemistry is difficult so he does all he can to teach clearly and helps out by giving TONS!!! of extra credit. don't let the homework every night scare you off. Chemistry is hard but the daily work keeps it in you head for the testes. RECOMMEND!!!
Very helpful professor, I think its ridiculous to complain about him giving homework, its never busy work and it helps you learn the material. His teaching method is unconventional but once you get used to it, I felt at least that I learned more from it. This is an easy course than Dr. Seager's because of the extra credit but still worth while.
For a Chem class, this one was alright. There is a curve on the tests which really helps. He offers extra credit during the review sessions before the tests. You can also use a full 8x10 note sheet on the tests. Sometimes he doesn't explain very well, but if you ask questions, you'll understand.
He did clicker questions and online homework. It wasn't too hard but at the same time you had to teach yourself. Luckily I had a good friend and we taught each other! Great guy not the greatest teacher. You have to ask a lot of questions!
It seems like he knows chemistry very well but he makes it very hard to understand. It seems like most of the time i was doing group work which was not even discussed instead of listening to a lecture that would apply to group work.
Great guy, way nice but a terrible teacher. I hated his teaching style, every day is group work and he would never teach and you have to use a stupid clicker in class. The main problem is chem is just hard! Honestly I would just do what I could to avoid chem.
I didn't like his teaching style. You basically get in groups and try to figure stuff out by yourself. It's very frustrating. He has online homework which is fairly easy and can drastically improve your grade. Clicker questions are done every day for attendance, but they are more free points. He does grade on a curve though which is nice.
Dr. Herzog is more than helpful, but he's not good at lecturing. If this were a political science class, then group work would be good. Group work for chemistry is pointless, confusing, boring. Take another professor if you actually want to be Taught Chemistry. Otherwise you're on your own here--I know I was.
Chemistry is hard, and Prof Herzog is super helpful and nice, but group learning is insanely frustrating. I wish he would just lecture so I didn't have to work everything out... it's time consuming.
Dr.Herzog is pretty much my favorite professor at Weber State. He's super cool, helpful and easy going. I enjoy the class so far cause it goes by super fast everyday due to group learning. I'm hoping to pull an A in the class since I'm Asian :) Overall, awesome professor and class. It's a no brainer between Dr.Herzog and any other professors.
Way nice and willing to help, but not a good teacher. I wanted him to lecture more instead of spending so much time in groups. In regards to some of the other professors though, I'd take him any day.
He is a good teacher because he is cares about his students learning the material and he is a good grader. The in class clickers are good because you are quizzed right after you learn something. This way you know if you really learned the topic. The online homework is also very easy to do.
I like Herzog as a person but his teaching methods isn't very effective. Everything is online and that was the problem...ONLINE!!! You can't even view your labs and prelabs so you dont know what you missed. He only curves on exams IF the class ave. isnt 80% or better. When I took this class, there were only two curves for the whole semester. Sucks!
Well, I'll keep it short. Pros: great grader (give big curve), cool and chill guy, willing to help. Cons: very unorganized, get confused a lot about his own materials, expect you to put in tons of hours of self study, willingness to help is not match by effectiveness (i.e the help is often useless), try to give out hard tests.
Chemistry is simply difficult! Professor Herzog teaches in a discussion/activity style which was difficult to get used to but eventually I learned to love. Prepare to do lots of independent study! He is more than willing to meet with any student to help with any problems they're having. He's excellent.
If you need to take this class i would take it from him. There are 2 online homeworks due a week, MUST come to class, grade is attendance based. He is fair grader, but he makes the students teach themselves 80% of the time which i didnt like. But i WOULD take it from him! Just pay attention
Honestly, he doesn't really teach and it sucks. He has you do online homework and if you ask him to do the problem he doesn't solve it, he trys to explain it and makes it more confusing that it already is. We're not even half way through and I look up videos on youtube to help me and read the textbook.
He really does want to help, however he just can't. He is a horrible teacher. POGIL was designed at a school with an ave class size of 19, this doesn't work with 60+. Too many people taking at once, can't think. Having the B student next to me teach isn't fair to me or the other student. WSUs Chem dept is just worthless go elsewhere for chem.
I liked him as a person a lot. His teaching style wasn't as good in some cases. He asks that you try to figure things out for yourself as a group, and he is there to help. Sometimes it was honestly helpful to do it that way, other times not. Lots of free points available in the class, but exams are tough. Overall I recommend.
Class is manatory, yet all of your homework is through an online. It is not clear ever what you are required to do and his winlingness to help is almost zero. He will just say, "you do not have the drive to pass," even if it is the fault of the two online homework sites we must to use, that you could not spend 12 hours a day on chemistry.
way too much homework for a lower division class. horrible prof. Mostly work in group, hardly lecture
I really enjoy this professor and this class. I am a chemistry major, though, so it's partially due to the subject he teaches. Overall, if you come to class everyday, participate, work with your group, get all the assignments in on time, go to lab, and go to the SI sessions, you should be good to go! It's a ton of work, but I feel so accomplished!
Dr. Herzog is awesome. He is a fantastic teacher and I'm sad he's taking a semester off! He is so willin to help and wants to see you succeed. He uses ALEKS online to help teach you wants going on and it's great. I honestly have no complaints. Show up do the little work he requires and easy A
Professor Herzog wants his students to succeed. I think his pogil group learning method would be more effective if there was more time to lecture about the concepts, then have the class break into groups, and have at least 15min for him to solve problems on the board, that would be ideal but not easily accomplished with the current lecture time.
This is a tough class. Professor Herzog uses a POGIL system, which a group a three students go through various worksheets while teaching each other the subject. His tests are really hard, but he does curve the final score until the class average is at 80%. If you are a Chem Major i definitely recommend Dr. Herzog. You will learn a lot.
I learned 80% of my chem from all his online homework, which there is way too much of. There are about 6 assignments due every week and an exam every 3 weeks. All the homework is online. I would not recommend taking the lab from him since he does not walk through the procedures at all. Good person, but could definitely improve. makes you work forit
I really like Dr. Herzog as a person. Unfortunately, I found his teaching style to be ineffective. Almost everything is done in groups, with very minimal lecture. All of the homework is done online and the program is very frustrating. Almost everything is self-taught in this class, which is difficult for chemistry. He does allow test corrections!
Professor Herzog is a great guy that loves to interact with his class. But he fails at teaching the material. He uses this Pogul system where you work with a group of three for his entire class. He will hand out the homework and have his students try to figure it out before he actually lectures (If he lectures it).
Well, if you can teach yourself chemistry then by all means take him. If you can't teach yourself then you may need a different professor. You work in groups and learn the material on your own. You also have homework all the time on Aleks. Plus, Aleks teaches it different than he does. Very nice guy, but he relies on resources to teach.
Dr. Herzog knows his material well, but does not teach it well. Lectures are minimal and he expects the students to teach each other. Quizzes are given in between the mini-lectures. I usually walked out of the class completely overwhelmed and depended on the online teaching/ homework assignments to learn the material. He is very lenient on exams.
Dr. Herzog uses the POGIL method which basically means that you work in groups to learn the material. He does lecture, but the majority of class periods are spent doing group work. His tests are very difficult, but he does give you 2 attempts and averages them together for a final grade. Expect lots of ALEKS homework as well.
Herzogs system is tough to get use to because you and two other people have to try and figure out how to do it yourselves, but if the class doesn't understand something, he is good about going over it in front of everyone. He is willing to help outside of class, too. The tests are tough, but his students also do better on the Standardized Final.
You are put into assigned groups, every class has online quizzes that you must be present for and if you get the answers throughout class wrong, yes while you are learning the material, you are penalized. Due dates are every other day for multiple items. Refuses to give answer sheets to check your work, so you cant check for help until after test
I enjoyed the group method of teaching he used. It kept class engaging and you felt like you were coming up with the science yourself as you worked through the worksheets. CHEM 1220 was more difficult material, and between going to lab, prelabs/lab reports, class, and homework there was a lot going on. Great guy and passionate. He curves exams.
His teaching is kinda difficult to get the hang of but he is very understanding and fair. He is always there to answer questions and to get help. He even emails back late at night and on the weekends. He lets you take each test and then average them. You are graded for coming to class but its not much of your final grade.
He is an amazing teacher that is super caring. He is extremely willing to help out if you do not understand a comment and cracks random jokes. The homework is online, but the grade is evenly distributed. The tests are fair, he ensures that the class average is 80% and will curve if it is lower. You can also take the test twice and he takes the mean
He is a really easy grader and does his best to help you out, but you will still need to work for what you get. It is important to go to class,m and he did teach our class using pogil which I wasn't a fan of, but when he did lecture it was really good. He is good with meeting out of class to help out.
Dr. Herzog is one of my favorite college professors so far. He provides a very large amount of homework every week, but this homework will cover every single thing you need to know in class. Dr. Herzog is available throughout the day and will contact you very quickly if you email him. The tests are difficult but you can retake them at home, untimed
He is an amazing professor. He will do all he can to help you understand the topics. As long as you try and do you best you will do great in the class. He lets you re-take each test to earn half points back for each question you miss and he is not that hard of a grader. If you can take a class from him,do it. Not homework heavy at all.
He is really a kind person and wants his students to succeed and will get back to you very promptly with emails. What makes his class harder than it should is the group work and having to teach yourself. I got an A in the class but had to work my butt off learning from YouTube because class time doesn't teach you. You go to class for the quizzes.
Dr. Herzog is a fantastic Professor. He applies the material to real life situations so you can better understand them. He does have you complete online homework before he teaches the material, but that just helped me to get a better grasp on the material. The only downfall to the class is if you are in a group that isn't pulling their own weight.
Dr. Herzog is a great professor that really cares about you as a student. Whenever I didn't understand something he would help me during or outside of class. He is very flexible and willing to help. I took this class once online and failed miserably, but Tim taught in way that was easy to understand and learn from. solid choice, would take again.
Dr. Herzog is one of my favorite professors. He doesn't lecture, but instead has us work in groups on worksheets. Some people don't care for this, but I felt like it really made me think about the material, and helped it to stick. He is always willing to spend time on subjects that the class doesn't understand.
He was an amazing professor from the beginning of the semester to the end. He is really attentive to questions in class and helps students through concepts they struggle with great efficiency. He uses the POGIL method which means a lot of group work. Many people don't like it but it isn't too bad if you use the online textbook to learn everything .
I wasn't a fan of the group work. Answers to the worksheet were not given so you couldn't check your answers. Sometimes the answers on the in-class quizzes were wrong. When he actually lectures he is great, but that isn't very frequent. The tests weren't too bad, but you never really knew what exactly would be on them.
Dr. Herzog is a really great professor. He is easily approachable and will help you to understand concepts. The group work isn't the most effective method of learning for everybody, but it works for most. As with all chem/science classes, you get out of it what you put into it.
I adore Herzog, I took both CHEM 1210 and 1220 from him. He does use the POGIL method of learning, so he doesn't really lecture, but he is great at answering emails and questions outside of class if needed. You are assigned groups and seating in class and you kind of work through things to figure them out on your own. I enjoyed him and the courses.
He teaches using the POGIL method. Lectures are light and lecture time is mostly spent answering questions from groups working on his packets. He dropped the lowest test score of the semester for us, and there were 12 tests total with a final at the end. He answers emails within 24 hours and wants you to understand the material.
He is always there for you and is willing to spend time outside of class working on problems. His second attempt of the exams can be annoying but it gives you a chance to go over and learn in depth the material you didn't understand the first time around. The prof is great the class is hard. He won't be offended if you get help from other profs
Dr. Herzog is definitely one of the best professors at Weber and will make sure you understand Chem. Group work helps you get to know friends in the class and the second attempt exams allow room for extra points. I would 100% recommend this professor to anyone in STEM.
Dr. Herzog is an awesome guy, but the way he teaches doesn't help me learn at all. He gives pointers for the material at the start of class, then has everyone go through the packets within their group and teach themselves the material. He's always willing to answer questions, and curves exams sometimes, but I feel like I teach myself everything.
Short lectures with lots of small-group worksheets. It takes getting used to, but is actually beneficial. Very fair grader, and really tries to prepare you for exams. Genuinely a really nice guy and a solid professor.
Dr. Herzog wants his students to succeed. I took the lab with this class, and he graded on participation. He required attendance - there are attendance quizzes but you automatically get 9/10 for showing up and the lowest 3 are dropped. It is very doable to succeed (especially since exams are curved if the average is lower than 80%). Take from him!
Easily the best chemistry professor I've had so far. His lectures are a little unorthodox but if you can get one on one time with him he can make you understand any of the topics. You get out of his class what you put in so an A is very easy if you do you homework and participate in class.
Dr. Herzog's lectures aren't great. He uses groups to have you learn the material on your own. I do wish he taught more concepts before sending us off to figure it out ourselves. With that being said, he is awesome 1 on 1. He is very happy to help and makes the material a lot easier when it is not with a large crowd.
There does seem to be a lot of tests for his class, but they can honestly save you. Do the retake then go over it with him in office. It's really not a difficult class, you just need to put in the effort.
This was an easy class that I expected to be hard. Just keep up on class material and utilize his office hours. It will really help you.
Good chemistry class, not bad at all.
I did not like the POGIL teaching method. Having students teach each other, based off of questions given on a paper, was not a way many of us could learn. He is a great teacher, and will answer any questions you have, but I would not be able to take his classes again, and succeed in Chemistry.
I only had Dr. Herzog for lab, but I wish I had more info when selecting lab instructors so I figured I'd share my thoughts. Dr. Herzog was great. He explained difficult things clearly and wanted you to keep asking him questions until you really understood. I really enjoyed this lab and there's no reason everyone can't get an A. 10/10.
Some aspects of the class were challenging, but if you are willing to put in the work as a student it'll be an easy A. There are lots of exams but nearly all of them were curved, meaning if you do well, you do really well. Utilize office hours and help from the student Learning Assistant and you will have a much better understanding of the material
Worst & frustrating professor I've had at weber. Gives you practice tests he claims are representative of the exam and they never are. Will spend three minutes on a topic at the end of class and put it on the test, when 80% of the class missed it he just shrugged and put it on our next test. Only upside to him is he's accessible outside of class.
"I wasn't a fan of the group work. Answers to the worksheet were not given so you couldn't check your answers. Sometimes the answers on the in-class quizzes were wrong. When he actually lectures he is great, but that isn't very frequent. The tests weren't too bad, but you never really knew what exactly would be on them." (from 2018, still true)
I enjoyed this class! Super easy if you have a background of chem from high school, but the concepts are also easy to pick up if you've never taken chem before. Loads of group work, so pick who you sit by wisely. Is very understanding and willing to help his students! Exams are almost exactly like the practice ones he provides, which is nice.
Do yourself a favor and take whatever chemistry class from literally any other professor. It seems like he doesn't actually care that you know your stuff just that you pass so it looks like there's a good passing rate. He doesn't actually lecture, like ever. So, if you want to be taught information get ready to watch youtube. I didn't like him.
Herzog was literally the best teacher ever. The group work was really nice because you get to know a lot of people and it makes class less awkward. He's very good at teaching but if you miss a day you will be lost the next. there's quizzes everyday so attendance is required. Answers emails fast and he really seems to care about his students!
I liked Herzog as a person, I just think whoever set up the intro chemistry classes hates Weber students. He was always willing to answer questions. The class was graded very generously, the lowest I got on a quiz was 2/20 and it only brought my grade down by 1%. I think you can pass this class no matter what you do. ALEKS was a pain though.
He was good, it is just a big class and I suggest you take a prep course before having his class, as it is self-paced.
