GREAT TEACHER!HE IS TOUGH BUT HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. HE MADE ME(SOMEONE WHO HATED ENGLISH) ENJOY AND LOOK FORWARD TO A 3 HOUR CLASS. HE WAS TOUGH, BUT WORTH EVERY BIT OF IT I LEARNED ALOT.
He's the best.
Very good professor. Interesting lectures and discussion.
Good teacher although very picky and hard grader. I have always gotten a's in my advanced english colleges at a local university yet i got a C in his course. But, he is very friendly, funny, lectures are great, quizzes everyday on reading. NOT AN ESAY CLASS. He does take attendance.
AWESOME teacher. I learned a lot from both of the classes I took by him. He assigns a lot of reading and gives a lot of quizzes, but as long as you read the quizzes are easy. He has a lot of energy and is actually excited about what he teaches...totally recommend him!!
This guy is honest and clear. He also has really high expectations. I was thinking about taking his English 101 class but I got a C in 50 so i don't figure i would pass his 101.
Great teacher, I did learn from him and this was my first Eng class since highschool. He assigns a short story to read everyday and quizes you on it the day after. He won't forget. He will drop you like a fly if you fail to incomplete even one assignment. He works with you and he's really insightful
Is helpful and so interesting. Very entergetic and classy. Loved going to class just to listen to him talk and hear his opinions. Was a tough grader on essays, expected the best.
great teacher, very helpful, he is serious about doing the work, showing up on time and takes attendence daily! not a class to slack off in!!enjoyed his class very much, he made 3 hrs seem like 1.

Very good teacher, straght forward, very helpful
He hets to the point and teches the students what they need to know.
Very good teacher. He teaches you so much and really enjoys what he does. Take attendance on a regular basis so if you want to pass show up. Very tough grader dont take the class if English is hard for you.
He is a very good teacher! He has a lot of energy and he seems like he loves to teach. He assigns very interesting books to read and talks about them in class to help you understand better. VERY CLEAR AND TO THE POINT! You cannot slack off though, no late assignments allowed! The class was very interesting. I hate english but enjoyed his class.
He incorperates his political views in his teaching. He chooses good books and films; however, they can be very offensive with language and content. He is very helpful and I learned a lot, yet he talks fast and you really have to pay attention.
Was a great teacher. Learned a lot.
This guy is ALL OVER THE PLACE. Good teacher. I learned a lot. He's very dramatic with everything he does. ATTENDENCE is everything. Miss one class expect grade to drop a full letter grade. AT LEAST 150+ points a day. Missed two days went from A to D.
If you are a dedicated student this is the class for you. He expects a lot out of his students. Come to class and do the work and you'll survive!
He's organized..very hyper in class, talks really fast to where you can't understand everything he says. He's used swear words in class, which is inapproperate for an English teacher. He gave a zillion quizzes a day, left a student in charge of an inclass essay, while he was having fun in New York. He just wasn't a great teacher.
this guy is lousy, if your in a tight spot with an issue at home he does not give a****. Essays have to be more than perfect. I would not recomend him at ALL!
My opinion this teacher is tough. Eassys have to be near Harvard or Yale Standards. impossiable to get an A. He expects more from you than he teaches. if you take his class good luck. i was sadly dissapointed.
mr hobert is very intuitive and fun! he brings excitment and makes lit come alive. it you have him early in the morn.. you'll have no problem staying awake. his essays are not that hard..if you know proper english and spell it right.. you have no problem passing. highly recommend!!
If you do the work and do well on your essay's the class is pretty easy.
awesome awesome awsome! love him. he is so smart and really knows what he is talking about. He will teach you so much about english and really prepare you for 101 or 103. Vey entergetic which makes class fun.
his class is hard but he is a good teacher...
he can't teach well and he talks to fast to a point where u can never understand what he's saying i totally dont like this teacher and i recommend that ppl do not take him
This teacher is annoying in every way! no joke! if your not there by 8am and late by 30 seconds , he marks you late and starts a quiz at the beginging and you already missed quistion #1. He talks fast and is weird! Lots of reading in this class from stories. Lots of in class 5 paragraph essay with citiation and work cited page. He grades hard.
Mr. Hobert is a good instructor;however, he assigns an over abundace amout of reading and he grades really hard.... i enjoyed his lectures, yet he didn't have (any or very few students) who earned A or B grades..
wow! he is amazing! his personality is absolutely perfect. he is a hard teacher, so if you are slow at learing i would not recommened him, but for the people who love to learn ... he is perfect for you! he grades hard, but i got all a's on my papers & daily quizes. he strives to teach; he will stop at nothing to help his students learn! i loved him
Almost impossible to get an A in his class. Grades VERY hard on essays! I am one of the few in the class to earn a B. There are quizes everyday and cannot miss one day of class without losing ton points. Overall, a great teacher and learned many things by being in his class. Highly recommended for good writers. He's the reason why I am majoring in English!
He is WONDERFUL!!

NO!!NO!!NO!!
He's a really great teacher! I loved his lectures and he can be really funny at times. He seems like he's always in a hurry but he will always stop and answer a question. He's always so helpful and so understanding. Just do all your work and all the reading, you'll defiantly pass.
This guy is tough. He is OK but very harsh on grading essays. You have to attend class everyday in order for you not to miss out on quiz points in which he assigns everyday. he acts queerish, and is always very hyper. If you want to pass Eng. 50, you should probably no take him.
You will learn so much in this class. The question is will you pass?? He is a hard grader, he forgets he is teaching eng 50. He also has his favorites. A pregnant girl missed an entire week of quizes, an essay and did not finish d final and yet she passed. However most ppl do not pass he's class.
Very hard to pass. Grades incredibly hard on essays. Unprofessional. He will stand up there and cuss.. f-words even. Do not like him at all.
He seems like a nice guy but he is a bad teacher. He has no structure to his lessons and is dismissive toward opinions that aren't similar to his. He treats his literature class more like a history class.
wow!! Mr. Hobert was a very hard teacher he is so picky, and etremely strict when it comes to essays and grammer he takes points off everything. I do not recommend him if you are not good in essays, or if you are taking English 50!!!
VERY DIFFICULT class. The books are needed and used. He is weird but okay at times. But I can't stress it enough about how difficult he is to please when it comes to essays and quizes. I don't recommend him at all.
No handouts or notes, which makes it unclear what he expects on tests and essays; strictly oral lectures ONLY. Miss one question on a midterm? Cannot earn higher than 80%. Don't do well under pressure? 4 in-class essays and 2 take-home essays. Are you taking other classes? He assigns 70-100 pages to read by next class. Be prepared to fail!
The way he teaches is horrible. if he does pass out study guides, which is rare, there's so much information on it that makes it impossible to narrow what he wants because he refuses to tell you the topics. Unfair, biased grading because he admitted in the beginning of the semester he has favorites, and it shows.
He is a very enthusiastic instructor. It is evident he enjoys teaching the subject. He reviews a ton of literature and expects a lot from his students. He may have his favorites but no more than any other instructor does. If you put forth the effort, you will certainly be rewarded for it. I enjoyed his teaching style and learned much!
Hobert is a great prof! He is always prepared and very intelligent. There are MANY slow students in this lit class who slow the class down. I have learned a great deal from Hobert. Take him.
He challenges you. If you get a good grade, you deserved it; although, on tests I try very hard on, I fail, but exams I barely try, I ace, lol. He is helpful and by the book type of guy. Everyone has his or her own learning styles. It took me a while to adjust to his teaching style, but over all, I enjoy his lectures and enthusiasm on the subject.
He is the best English teacher I have ever had. He taught me how to write essays and how do understand grammar. The books were good, and we did use them a lot.
Grades hard. Good teacher but he is a challenge
he is a really good teacher i would recommend him to anyone he really knows his stuff..he talks a little fast but not to the point where you cant understand him..along with english you will learn some history..i HATE history but he really made it interesting..overall VERY good teacher
he is indeed a good teacher. you will learn a lot from him. On the other hand, his grading is wayy off! he does - negative points if you miss a question on a quiz he will take points away which really pisses people off.
I was in Hoberts office weekly for help, most of his comments were go to writing center. They had a difficult time understanding what he wanted. After drop date his grading was imposible. I feel he could of helped but wouldn't he just said "no!!!"
To sum up Mr. Hobert into one word... AMAZING! I loved this class, all the books were good, good subject for the essays, and the quizzes are common sense. I often missed questions on the quiz because I would hurry or I would overlook an obvious answer. He talks fast but it's to keep you awake. This guy made it so that I love english now.
Really nice and energetic teacher. Interesting materials, but daily quizzes make attendance mandatory. Grammar Nazi (obviously) strict grader. Tough class, but rewarding.
if you go to class and do your reading i assure you that you will do fine.
Mr. Hobert rocks! Very tough though. He used to correct my post-it notes to him. Great sense of humor...
Did not want to honor DSPS stuff and was down on people who rely solely on Financial aid. He is good if your into politics and weather. He also doesn't admit his mistakes much either. For an example when he told us that Golden's "Memoirs of A Geisha" was about a man pretending to be a woman I thought he was wrong. I looked it up, he was wrong.
I absolutely love Mr. Hobert. He is so passionate about English. I never once was bored in his class. Best English teacher that I have ever had. He inspired me to become an English major. Tip for you: If you don't write well,do poorly in grammar, and procrastinate, then his class is not for you. Attendance is mandatory! Be ready for daily quizzes!
He is always in a good mood. and will answer any question and you will understand him when he is done. he gives daily quizes so be prepaired, but awsome professor
I hated English and was not good at it. he is very helpful and I learned so much I wish I could take 101 with him!
Mr. Hobert is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I was never really good in English until I came upon his class. Essays were my weakness, and it is now one of my strengths. You have a quiz almost every day at the beginning of class, but he teaches really quickly.
THE WORLDS GREATEST PROFESSOR
Amazingand unforgetable teacher.I will wait till he teaches 101 so I can take him again.
Honestly the best teacher I've ever had. do your readings and you'll do fine. I'm waiting till spring to take his 101 class and 102!
I am horrible with english and do not enjoy learning about it but he made this class very entertaining. He explains things many different ways and really wants to help you. He is a very tough grader but it makes you better in the end. I would definitely recommend taking his class!
Mr. Hobert is passionate about English and about his students. He wants to you get his material he is teaching. He will go over a subject and ask if you have any questions. Don't be afraid to ask, if you don't understand. In high school I was a C student especially in English, I am currently holding an A in his class. Best teacher I ever had.
Mr. Hobert is an amazing English teacher! In my opinion one of the best professors I have had so far at MJC.
Mr. Hobert is an amazing English teacher! As long as you do the readings he assigns, you will be fine! I would take him for every English class if I could!
Professor Hobert is a really great teacher. He is a little strict and his writing requirements are a bit tough but if you do the homework and read you should be able to pass.
he is funny and intersting there is quizzes all the time,he grades essays strictly but he does it to prepare you for 101..i liked him alot he is not boring at all! you learn to wrtite and speak well with him
Professor is a challenge, but he will definitely make sure students understand the subject before moving ahead. Great Teacher! Tips: - Be sure to study! quiz's are given almost daily. - He has an eye of a hawk and will catch you texting (though he does allow students use phone during free time) - Do Not miss a day of class - COOL and thinks young
Hobert is a really good teacher he is a VERY active person and really QUICK person Student must have to be active in his class He give too many quizzes. Overall he is a easy teacher if students fellow his instruction and do the quizzes.I would say if a student isn't much active and slow learner then this class ain't good for them, he's good teacher
I had him last semester and I loved his class. I am not a reader, but I enjoyed both novels he made us read. he is very strict about word count when it comes to essays, but I learned a lot in his class. he is full of energy so it makes learning English not as boring
He is a very tough grader. His grading and requirements to pass are not fair; You must do good on the essays otherwise it's almost impossible to pass. His class and expectations are very challenging plus he is not helpful if you ask for help; he is very arrogant!!!
don't take him. the novels and readings he assigns are so boring and his final is difficult he didn't help a bit about it or prepare us for it. He's also rude he kicked a student out of the class several times for not having the book at that moment! To me, he's a bad teacher.
Don't take him, treats English 50 as if it's 101. Too tough and doesn't help at all, the first thing he says is "Writing Center"
He's more of an English 101 teacher than an english 50 teacher. The only thing that stands out from him to me is when he kind of act out a novel while reading it to the class. I think he should be teaching a theatre class like storytelling (MTHETR-123) instead. Don't get me wrong he's a nice person who is teaching the wrong class. (lol)
The reading load is a little lighter than other literature classes at MJC. Professor Hobert is a great professor and is clear in his directions. He talks fast and that makes him slightly hard to understand sometimes but he is always more than happy to clarify what he said. Takes roll so come to class for credit. 10 quizzes the whole semester.
Mr. Hobert is a good teacher: He is very enthusiastic and passionate about his material. A really great class for English majors and non English alike. Always show up, take good notes, work hard on the essays, and you'll end up with fair grade.
Okay, so I wish someone had written a review like this before I took the class. Professor Hobert is kind and will answer all your questions, but he is a ruthless grader when it comes to MLA format. A papers can quickly become C or D papers with MLA errors. Take your papers to writing center or see a tutor BEFORE handing in your first essay. CITE!!!
If you have trouble focusing, do not take his class. He talks way too fast and it is sometimes hard to understand him. He is an EXTREMELY tough grader when it comes to the essays! I have always done very well with English and I am failing this class because of how he grades the essays. More than half of our class is failing right now!
By far the best professor I've had . He is super passionate about english and yeah he can be strict and a bit tough on grading but he's always there to help and answers every question. Of course their will be reading and writing essays duh its english class! If you show up to class ,take good notes, and talk to him there should be no reason to fail
Horrible Teacher, he isn't clear on topics, rude to students. Not helpful. Inconsiderate. do not take!!
No matter what Engl101 class you take you have to write 8000+ words. He's cool but not an easy grader AT ALL if you don't follow his instructions. Does less of both towards the end. He explains stories thoroughly and assigns more quizzes in the beginning. I finished with a C bc I missed 1 essay.. I could've gotten an A. Turn in EVERYTHING!!!!!
Prof. Hobert is absolutely wonderful. He is super ambitious when it comes to the reading material, so i would suggest getting the book at least 2 weeks in advance and start the short stories, poems, ect. He is by far the toughest grader when it comes to MLA format, but he respects each student and is always willing to help. Stay on top of things
Rudest professor ever and toughest grader at MJC! I do not recommend to anyone!
Its good to expect quizzes before every class and be ON TIME if not early so you don't miss quiz questions because if you show up late you won't get credit for answering the question. Just stick with the schedule and dont slack off. Class convos are fun. He gives E.C. for volunteering to ready so volunteer every time it can add up.
Professor Hobert was my best teacher in the spring 2016 semester. I'm taking his English 101 class now and I look forward to achieving greatness in his class.
Professor Hobert is an amazing teacher,he gives demonstrations, visual, and he is hands on learning. He's available to his students via email, office visits, and always wants to make sure that students are retaining information that he's giving out. He's energetic and humorous, and reading materials are always interesting and very relatable to life.
For most of the people who would take this class, you wont like it. But if you actually want to learn and have an educating class, Hobert is the way to go. I learned more in this class 2 years ago than all of my other college courses combined. A lot of reading and writing, but you'll actually learn while getting your prerequisite.
Great teacher!
There are no lectures. You're expected to read at home. If you come to class w/o the book, you have to leave. At the start of class he'll quiz you (about 6 ?s). The questions are easy, as long as you read. If you come to class w/o reading, he'll kick you out. We have 5 essays for turnitin and 7 in class. His grading is very clear. He's very clear!
Timothy Hobert is by far my favorite teacher at MJC. While at first I struggled in class, he is more than willing to help you. He will advise you to go to the writing center, but will sit down with you if you really need more help. Passionate for the class, which makes it so much more interesting. Going to take him for English 102.
I really liked Mr. Hobert. He was funny, nice, and full of energy. You have to read short stories before every class, take a short and easy quiz on them, and then you discuss the stories in class. The essays are easy and he gives you the amount required for the class. He's a great teacher and I highly recommend him.
Hobert didn't teach at all and you have to learn every thing by yourself. He required four books and all of them are boring. He gave very confusing quizzes every day. You have to submit the essays online and it has to be one draft not allowing you to know what was wrong with your essays. Do not take him.
Hobert does not grade essays and quizzes fairly. He has double standard for grading base on your race.
He is horrible! He is very rude, and makes you feel stupid for asking a question. He is a very hard grader! Do not take him!
Hober is a great teacher.
He is an amazing guy with a huge passion for what he teaches. Never a dull moment in his class. He is a tough grader, but is very willing to help you succeed. Cares a lot about his students and is just a great person all around.
Hobert is amazing! There is so much salt in the reviews below. Yes, he's difficult, but he makes you learn. He makes sure that you are understanding everything correctly. The essays and quizzes are not hard at all. I am Mexican-American and I was graded equally as everyone else. You guys need to know that not every class is a walk in the park.
Super tough grader to the point I was nervous about passing. Wrote an additional 2500 word essay for extra credit and he failed me anyhow. Penmanship is atrocious, and you will not decipher his lingo. Reading, reading, reading!
Super tough grader, bad penmanship, good guy, pay attention, do your reading, and be sure to always turn in a rough copy of your essays to see where you weak points are in writing.
Hobert was one of my favorite professors this year; I had him for English 101 and I really feel like I learned something. Most of these reviews aren't very good but as long as you pay attention and do the homework and writing you should be set. There is a lot of reading and writing but it isn't too difficult, just time consuming. DONT PROCRASTINATE
Wow I've never had a problem in English but in his class I was at a low C which was unacceptable for me. My doing the reading and knowing the answers for the quizzes helped alot but I did as he said I worked my but off got 90's on last essays and I improved my grade from a C- to B I learned alot from him thought he was awesome
Very fast paced professor but extremely informative and very interesting. You read A LOT and have quizzes about those readings every class meeting so you have no choice but to read, however, the stories are extremely interesting and well written. He is also pretty funny and interesting.
Worst English professor I have ever had. Tough grader and is very rude. He puts students down if there answers are wrong. He told a student to drop his class just because he got an answer wrong. Do not recommend. Lots of homework as well.
There is a lot of reading you have to do before class, but as long as you keep up with it, his class isn't hard. He is a little unclear about what he wants in an essay, but he's willing to clarify. He's funny and very caring. Just do the assigned reading before class and you'll do just fine.
This class was pretty hard. A LOTTTT of reading but overall a good class. Hobert is truly a great teacher. Hes very passionate about what he does. Hes always there to help when needed. Keep up with the reading and you wont fail too hard.
If you do NOT want any challenges with your essay writing and reading comprehension, I suggest to steer away from this professor. If you WANT to improve your essay writing and learn more from it, take his class. Submit the essay on time, read the assigned reading, and don't miss any class meetings.
Hobert is a great teacher, but you have to work for your grade. There are a lot of essays and reading in his class, so you need to be on top of everything if you want to pass. If you do the assignments and pay attention in class, then you'll do fine.
I recommend to everybody dont take this prof.
I do not recommend this professor at all. I am an English major and thought his class was very over the top. He is super strict, there are tests every day. Before his class I received A's in every English class. I dropped his class and got an A with professor Jenny Netto. He is very strict and over all just an annoying professor.
Prof Hobert is a great teacher. Im an English major and felt his lectures were very explained and he was able to bring real work ideas into our work. Lots of essays and tons of reading though.
Worst professor I ever had at this school. First, he talked way too fast for anyone to understand & made you feel stupid if you asked questions. Gave weird/dirty looks to students & would say rude comments. Second, he made me drop the class because i missed one class & it was already almost 3 months into the semester.. not impressed. Thank u, next
Legit worst professors ever taken. Students cannot learn in an environment, professortalkswaytofast.. Students have emotional & social needs besides deal educators high ego & distractions. Still have nightmares about it to this day about trying to understand speed quizzes & pick out convoluted details.. Skip it!
Ethnolog is an academic field that compares relationships and analyzing the characteristics of different people and the relationship between them.. this is difficult because facts become opinions from any perspective making it extremely dangerous to be taught this way... moral superiority can't be changed making judging students extremely immoral
Timothy Hobert could not tell difference between ChatGPT, Paraphrased ChatGPT, or Human essays. Professor had difficulty understanding different syntax and diction of multicultural Ebonics. Do not take this class unless one enjoys born moral & ethical ideologies of Pandemics or Nuremberg. As a young boy in classroom, I am not gay, but thank you.
Furthermore, the professor was distressing and wholly inappropriate for labeling students "psychopaths" simply for disagreeing with political ideologies. Such behavior not only harms classroom dynamics but also demonstrates a lack of respect for diverse opinions of critical thinking.
