Hilarious! He's a lefty, so if you're a staunch neocon, beware! Otherwise, terrific! Makes you read ALOT, but I didn't and got away with a B. I would love to take him again. Show up because some of the questions will not be in the text - and will be from Star Trek (from the lecture).
Very easy, pretty entertaining. He drops the lowest test grade. He usually puts the lecture notes on-line. I missed a couple classes, studied the notes, read the book and got an A. The reading is about 20 pages per test, there are 6 tests. Not too bad.
The guys definately a lefty. He's entertaining though. He'll throw out some vulgarity from time to time as well.
this guy is very liberal and has offended a fwe students with his views, so if you're a righty be careful. His tests are pretty easy and the lecture is entertaining. The notes are posted online but don't think you can get away with not going to class because he throws in a few random questions only rom the lecture, like about which car dealership t
great teacher really keeps you interested but gotta take notes an write down the little things (what car he has, jokes) he has all those things as questions on his test
Study course compass in detail because half the test comes from there. Has more of his jokes on the test than things from the book. Still need the book. Overall, he's ok if you are open to listening to how someone else views politics.
Good teacher overall, cracks jokes often and only met once a week. You do need to read the book but his tests are sometimes random and question and has joke answers. He does offer extra credit often which helps alot on tests. I got a B for the class but definitly coulda have gotten an A.
this professor is funny as hell...good teaching...even though i got a C i loved his class...its like Comedy Central with politics...=)
Entertaining, informational. He does like to cuss. I find the tests easy, I study it all, the coursecompass, the book and lecture notes. The tests have q's from all 3 sources and some random wacky questions. The extra credit is so far only q's from movies, I watch each 2x and do well on extra credit. First test hint: memorize the court cases.
You get extra credit for the clickers which take attendance. If you don't do so good at the test you cant take a bonus quiz over a video he posted (really helps to watch it). Posts notes on WEBct. Tests are mainly on Course Compass information.
This guy does not have his act together. He is very funny and knows the subject but is disorganized and frequently arrives unprepared for class. He gives really interesting lectures when he is prepared but as the semester goes on he will steadily get worse. Easy grader who can be interesting but overall is not responsible enough to teach adults.
Easy class. He types out notes and clear on lectures. Gives out a curb and extra credit.
He is funny but he treats his lectures as though he is on the poor man's daily show. His notes are chaotic and hard to follow. Everything is from lecture GO TO CLASS! Test questions are sometimes jokes and really hard to understand what he wants from them. Always unprepared.
I loved taking this course! It was one of the few I was sure to attend every class. His test are based primarily on his lectures so you really need to pay attention because some questions are really random and you wouldn't think they'd show up on a test. Do the course compass, it's worth the 5 or 6 extra point and definitly do the EC videos.
He definitely knows this stuff backwards and forwards. This is a pretty fun class with reasonable tests that I definitely recommend having the book AND going to class. He teaches, but most of the time I feel like I'm at a comedy club. This class should be an easy A!!
T. Howard is a character lol...His lectures are extremely interesting. He tells lots of jokes but they help you to remember what he was talking about and to absorb the info better (i don't know many ppl who are very interested in learning about pol sci) But he has a lot of test questions & u do kinds need the book but not really. Take him& Have fun
Likes to tell jokes but one can near tell his likes and dislikes about politics. Not psycho about latecomers. Has test that were a pain and they had book questions too. Does have extra credit. Easy to have if you read notes and book. At least he tried to make it interesting.
Dr. Howard is incredible!! I made sure to get him again for my second Poli Sci class. He's really funny, posts his lecture notes online, and always gives an extra credit quiz with each exam. His exams have questions from the book and irrelevant ones from his lecture.(ie, "Who is the highest paid state employee in Texas?" Mack Brown, coach at UT.)
Class can be entertaining. He does tell jokes. He has 6 exams, all m/c, 70-100 questions. His notes aren't super clear, but you do get at least 10 extra points per test.
I had Howard last Spring for Pols 1336 & I made sure I got him for Pols 1337. He is the best teacher! His lectures are never boring. There are 6 exams (the final is the 6th but you don't take it during finals week). If you watch the extra videos and answer the short quiz you get 10 points! He tells A LOT of jokes too!
If you take this professor, be prepared to do LOTS of work. There are 6 total tests, (every third week theres a test) and each test has 70+ questions. Coming from the lectures, and the reading. Tries to make the lecture interesting with jokes, at times he can be very unprepared. Would not recommend this professor to my friends.
Howard will speak his mind and it seems he does not care who he offends, and he gives fair warning of this in his syllabus. He keeps the class interesting and enjoyable to hear a lecture. The class itself is very easy; listen to what he says and skim the book and you'll do fine, he post all notes and gives lots of extra credit.
Lectures at times are irrelevant. Professor Disorganized. He is hilarious at the same useless. Test cover alot of material, but extremely random from the book, online notes, and lecture. 70 to 100 random questions. Not advised to take this class
test are hard, he gives you all these notes about 30-60 pages and chapters to read for a test and its all random, you dont even know what you need to study for the test. plus hes an idiot and holds no mercy. save ur money trust me on this. go find another prof.
Made sure I got him for both classes. As long as you attend the class and pay attention and read a bit of the books, you should do fine. He's full of dry humor and apparently does stand up on occasions. If you are a student that needs a lot of help or needs a reference, do not pick him. He teaches the class and that is the end of it.
Great teacher, he keeps his students attention with his kooky personality, jokes, and his pictures on his lecture notes. You do use the book, and if you print his notes, read the text your supposed to, you'll get a good grade in this class.
Only take this teacher if you love political science and already know it very well. He will teach you NOTHING. The tests ask completely random questions that are not related whatsoever to political science although a good portion of it is political science related but very obscure. Very difficult class. DO NOT TAKE.
Best political science professor I've ever had! He makes the material easy to learn and remember, mainly because the guy is freakin' hilarious. He posts all the notes online, which is great especially when you miss a class. Extra credit quizzes are super easy and really help your grade. Do not miss out on taking his courses.

HILARIOUS! He makes political science a class you WANT to come to. I already registered to take him again in the fall. Usually 60% of the tests are from the book (the reading is usually 2chpts) and 40% from the stuff he says in class, so you should go, but it's not a big deal if you miss 1 or 2 lectures at the most for each test.
I had to study A LOT for this class, partly because i didn't attend lectures much, and partly because he never gave us a test review. That was irritating, but otherwise he is funny and keeps things interesting. I'd recommend him if you already know the material fairly well.
Makes nothing but jokes, makes you read a textbook with the worst un-resalable quality, and gives you incomprehensible notes. And the exams have nothing to do with anything. Worst professor ever.
This professor has a very dry sense of humor, he makes off the wall comments, but makes a lot of sense. Lectures where somewhat enjoyable. Offers mad amounts of extra credit. Test are 30% book, 65% Lecture and 5% random.
STAY AWAY! Horrible teacher & should have stayed at COMMUNITY COLLEGE level. Goes off on random tangents & tells pointless stories about his personal life. Gives a lot of reading & posts notes on Webct. Stopped going to class because it was a waste of time. Puts jokes in his lectures, THEN ASKS TEST QUESTIONS ABOUT THEM! EXTREMELY unprofessional.
Awesome professor: Joke tie into the lecture very well and helps to make us realize many things about our (and others') political system. You should definitely take his class if you want to learn something! All you have to do is try and You should have no problem making an A!
Fantastic teacher. Engages in discussions with students. Clearly answers any questions you have. Adds humor to a lot of his lectures (he does standup comedy on the side). Doesn't take attendance, but uses some of the jokes he makes in class on the tests to make sure you attend. Posts all lectures online. Great teacher and overall great person.
Awesome professor. He keeps you interested in the topic by cracking jokes and putting things into his perspective. Be warned, he can be offensive to some. His tests are 60% notes, 30% book, and 10% lecture. Attendance not mandatory, but he throws a few lecture material into his tests not covered in notes. Tests are average, but not too hard
I am a second year freshman and by far her is the best teacher that I've had. His jokes are funny, he loves to interact with us, and with every test we have extra credit questions. I wish all my teachers were like him.
absolutely hate this class. Lectures are HORRIBLE if you HATE politics, even more boring with his jokes which you won't understand. If you choose him get a early class because he's more alive, later classes are pretty dead. He gives a few answers to tests and many extra credit opportunities, which you will need!!!
HORRIBLE CLASS!!! Professor Howard was an okay teacher, he made jokes all the time, but half of them the class didn't understand. He made you confuse on what would be on the tests. He does give a lot of extra credit. The tests are EXTREMELY HARD! you need to have an extremely good memory.
The last two reviewers must have not read the book or something, because his exams are straightforward. There are no tricks. Read over your notes, read the chapters in the book, and watch the extra credit video. You'll get an A+. His jokes are pretty funny. You have to be dense not to understand them.
Horrible Teacher with boring lectures full of lame jokes.
Do not take this professor if you are a girl. He does not seem to care about his female students as much as his males. Just stay away if you can.
Wow, a bunch of crybaby reviewers ANYWAYS, this guy does go into his liberal tangents a lot, BUT he is very clear and direct with the material. If you don't get his jokes, well your not as much of a dork as me. ALWAYS attend lectures and read the chapters for the highest possible grade on exams. Highly recommended.
Prof. Howard is awsome! He teaches the material and includes LOTS of jokes which makes it easier to remember most stuff. Offers 10pts extra credit on every test which helps. The tests are confusing at times but over all if you study the notes and read the book you should get a B- or C+ w/out extra credit. Go 2 lecture and pay attention ull do fine.
Great professor, easy tests if you atten class and read the book. lots of extra credit. VERY FUNNY.
You could study for this test 24/7 and not be able to pass this test. He tells good jokes, but hard test that sometimes doesn't make sense.
Granted he is divisive, vulgar, and tells too many jokes but the class is an A if you read the book and decipher the useless from the relevant on his notes. The tests are so incredibly easy. I didn't go to class for quite a while during the semester because most of the stuff was irrelevant. I have a very high A.
He is very funny and makes his topics interesting. The only downfall is that the jokes he makes in class are included on the tests. Do not take the class if you are easily offended. He is very funny and you can learn a lot from him.
Yeah, he'll make u laugh, but he'll also make u worry about ur grade b/c his tests r so hard, it's no wonder y he offers so many extra points (on quizzes that r over some pbs videos)-- besides he tends 2 get off topic talking about other stuff, that although funny -some rude- don't relate 2 the class, the notes r also ridiculously long
The class is easy if you go listen to his terrible lectures. His notes are so unorganized. He capitalizes everything and then centers it. He is a strong liberal who likes to use profanity alot in his lectures. Although he may be a jerk, I reccomend him because the material is easy and he offers tons of extra credit.
The syllabus is your bible!!! Regardless of what comes out of his mouth. He's entertaining to listen to, but his tests are a little over the edge (lots of misleading questions). Offers extra credit to cushion your grade. He holds Sim City to VERY high regards (you'll find out if you take him). Gives you enough rope to hang yourself with, so STUDY!
easy class! I only went to 2 lectures through the whole semester and made a B in the class. 6 test, open at a different time but all close at the very last day of finals! I took all test in 1 month. THIS IS NOT A HARD CLASS. READ THE BOOK, scan his notes, watch the extra credit video and you will pass.read the chapters they cover 80%+ on the tests.
I do not recommend his class, or going if you take it. He posts his notes online, so there is no reason to go, he just basically reads from the notes. He cracks a lot of crude jokes about race, sex, etc., and curses a lot. I didn't go to class often and passed. The tests cover a lot of dense material, but they are not terrible.
Professor Howard is the Dr. Bott version for Political Science but with a vulgar and crude personality. I attended 2 lectures and made a B-. Memorization is key to passing his tests. His notes are often ridiculously long because of unneeded pictures and jokes. Have fun deciphering them, it was HELLL!! Still passed though :).
PLEASE DONT TAKE! yeah he's funny and yeah he gives extra credit, but his class is really un organized. 6 tests not comprehensive I read the book for all tests and got a C-. if you do take him, MAKE SURE you take the tests at the scheduled time and do extra credit or else you are looking at a C at best. But really a waste of time to take him!
If you are really interested in the subject and bad jokes, you'll love this class. He gave 6 exams a semester. Most of the material are from his notes, (notes were unorganized and filled with useless pics and data) the textbook and some of his awful jokes. He's a cool guy, you just have to really study to pass his tests. His extra credit helps ALOT
This course was a disappointment and the professor reads from his notes. His online notes are too long with alot of useless pictures/jokes. He is rude to students that need to ask questions via e-mail. I attended class part time and found it a waste of time. You can pass his tests if you read the notes and text. I was disappointed in this class.
This is one of the best professors at UH. I think the previous comments were from egotistical D-bags. Granted he does make a ton of bad jokes that are usually crude and in ill taste, but if you want to really find out what goes on in politics take his class. He does tend to go off topic sometimes and he is super liberal. You must read the book
he is amazing i loved his class because with the extra credit and the notes you dont really need anything else to pass the book wasnt really that necessary with a little skimming of the book you should be ok i passed w. a soild a and almost never went to class
DOn'T EVER TAKE THIS TEACHER & I use that word lightly. He;s by far the worst prof I've had in 3 years of school. He cusses worse than anyone I know, if you aren't a Liberal, get ready to be offened because 70% of the class time he puts down any and everything associated with Conservatives and Christian. THE ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER EVER & VERY RUDE!
He's an okay teacher, boring class. I could never figure out his testes, there are 6, and the notes are online. He also gives extra credit for every exam.
HORRIBLE>>>>Stay AWAY!!
BEST TEACHER EVER!! SUPER FUNNY, IT WAS AN EASY GRADE!! WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND TAKING HIS CLASS!!
I took Howard for both of my polisci required classes.. 1336 and 1337. I overall think he has been one of my most fun teachers here at UH. I feel like he gives his lectures some humor to keep us interested and he knows his field well since he is working on his PhD right now. This class is a very easily attained A. You might have to put a little eff
His lectures are word for word off of his notes off the screen. WORD FOR WORD. His test are nothing from his lectures and some from the book but its so much to read that you dont know where to pinpoint your studying. Im an A student and this is the first class I came close to failing. UGH!!!!
Very funny teachers and keeps lectures interesting. Must read the book and the notes to pass the tests. The notes are online and about 100 pages because he puts tons of pictures in them. A lot of extra credit opportunity. Good idea to attend class. Recommend this class.
Although he does give a ton of extra credit, and if you go to class and read you should do fine; I would suggest trying to find someone else to take before Howard. I liked him, but I know many people who couldn't stand him because of his controversial lectures (and tests actually). I made a B just by going to class and reading, but I didn't love it
He is extremely liberal, and it shows. If anyone questioned his lecture or gave an opposing opinion he pretty much attacked them until they stopped talking. His way or the highway basically. As for the tests, I'd imagine they could be easy if you attended class and really listened, because he talks about some random stuff. He annoyed me to no end.
This guy is, most likely, the most entertaining, awesome, intelligent teacher in the ploy sci department! i hate poly sci, history and all that jazz and i made a 105 in his 1336 class. i never studied more than 1 hour for each test and i took ok notes. He makes the questionable material so obvious is absurd to get anything besides an A!
He is a great teacher. He gives you everything you need to know for the tests. Just go to class listen and read the book and you will do fine. He gives A LOT of extra credit so there is no way someone should fail his class.
You will guarantee success in the class if you do the following: 1. go to class- suggestion print his notes from Blackboard Vista and highlight them as he reviews the material in class. 2.Remember his jokes- why.. he does want to see if you attended. 3.Lastly- read the chapter especially the little articles within each chapter.
my fav prof.he's hilarious and tht helps for such a boring subj.6 exams.6+ bonuses.interesting bonus movies.if u study the notes n the bonus ull get a B+.if u buy the book n really study all of it n remember his jokes an A for sure!i took the B+.very kool dude.dont go in their w/ an attitude of i hate liberals, jst enjoy.very easy n educational!
The BEST... TAKE HIS class..if not u WILL regret it. I sit in the front..and i LOVE going to classss
Very very interesting professor especially if political science is your thing. 6 straight forward exams and 6 easy extra credit opportunities worth up to 10 points each. If you go to class, listen, and read over the notes its an easy A. As mentioned before he IS fairly liberal and is not afraid to say how HE really feels about certain topics.
He is a cool person, very outspoken and I admit I'm not a history/political science person but I study for this class, attend most of the lectures and still get horrible grades on my exams. It does help with extra credit and 6 total exams. I dont recommend.
this guy is like a stand up comedian! you have to pay attention but its really hard not to because he ALWAYS keeps you interested. he always hints about the matching questions on the exams, which are the ones that are worth the most points. GREAT CLASS!!!
He is a political science professor that expresses his political views. Give him a break. Has humor, but sometimes his jokes fall flat. 6 exams including the final with extra credit possible on each. The final is just over 1 set of notes so its pretty easy. Towards the end, attend class, he starts testing you on his stories that arent on the notes.
He basically tells jokes all day. Don't need to attend class cause EVERYTHINGS posted online. He's hilarious. Easy class. Theres 7 EXTRA credits.. 6 tests.. EASY A.
i seriously LOVE this guy, he makes the most horrible subject hilarious and memorable. i seriously find myself telling people about the stuff he says.. and its government. that is what only a really good teacher can do. the tests are kind of hard but he gives plenty of extra credit so if you go to class and study youll make an a
i cant believe anybody gives him a bad rating. you guys are CRAZY. lighten up, seriously he makes a gay ass subject the****.
Be prepared to do a lot of your own studying in this class. What I would do is study all of the notes, which are usually about 30-50 pages, and then read the 1-3 chapters required for the test. Although attendence isn't mandatory, he will ask questions on the test about stupid random things he said in class. If you can find another teacher, do so!
Ignore ppl who left bad comments. If u fail this class then u shouldnt be in college anyway. He's great, hilarious, and interesting (hard to do w/poli sci). His notes are long cause the font size is 28 or above (and all caps)so of course its gonna look longer than it is. Yes u do have to read the book (who'd a thought u have to READ in college!)...
This comment is cont'd from below. Some chapters are long & some are short. He does talk about random things pop up on tests. I went to class, did NOT take notes, read the book, studied his notes, did the TONS of extra credit. Got a 97 EASY. Go to class & u should get at LEAST a B. If not, drop out of college cuz it doesnt get any easier than this.
Go to class (he doesnt take attendence), take notes if u want, read the book, study his notes (cut out the pics & change font size to 12), do extra credit (videos are long but informative)and u should get an A. He tells u exactly whats on the test in the syllabus. Its the same for every test. And he curses. A lot. But he's funny. :)
Howard is the anti-professor. If you want a painfully easy A, take this class. If you believe Michael Moore and Janeane Garafalo are BOTH funny AND intellectual take this class. But I do urge a little caution and a lot of incredulity. Because, after all, even a monkey teaches us; keep distance from the cage lest you have excrement thrown at you.
Thi prof is basicily YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE. He's tesching habits are ridiculous he expects you to be interested about hes life and if your not you fail the test! He insults students and makes them feel like crap. He's notes always have some kind of profanity or sexual activities. AS far as the work there is 6 test (non are dropped) and ex ced for ea
Howard makes learning an otherwise boring subject interesting. He might be a liberal but college is about learning to adapt to situations that are contary to our own belief. Suggestions: print notes resized with 8pt font, take note on the jokes he tells, read the obsure articles in the chapters, remember what the first page of each chapter is about
His class is very easy. Go to class because some things on the test will be from what he has said and cant be found in the notes or in the text. Tests are easy and extra credit is offered after every test. He makes class interesting and is kinda funny
HE MAKES CLASS SOMEWHAT INTERESTING. YOU MUST READ THE CHAPTER AND READ ALL THE NOTES. HE PUTS RANDOM QUESTIONS ON THERE FROM THE CHAPTER. AT THE END OF EACH TEST THERE IS EXTRA CREDIT. IT SOMEWHAT HELPS. I DONT THINK THE CLASS WAS THAT HARD SO I AM TAKING HIM NEXT SEMESTER FOR POLS 1337
This class is useless but it is mandatory so whatever. The guy keeps it interesting with his very much opinionated tirades. Attendance isn't mandatory but you need to go to help you do better on the test--he puts random crap on them. His grading scale is awesome but it only works to your advantage if you take the test and not hold off for makeups.
TAKE HIM, fun easy class... interesting, what the heck is people talking about he is a funny one! just read and you will be good to go!
I dont like him. He does not compromise. If you have a problem he will say tough**** and thats all. His class isn't really that hard but his test are completely random. If he didn't have extra credit than everyone would be screwed
Awesome teacher. Very sarcastic and funny when it comes to lecturing. You need to read the chapters to get like half the questions on tests. The other half are things from lectures that you will miss if you skip.tests are all MC and he gives a TON of extra credit.
Awesome teacher. A bit obsessed with star trek but tolerable. Reading his notes online is enough to pass the test but if you wanted a higher grade show up in class for the details. He also gives extra credit quizzes that help alot because it adds to your overall grades. Even if you miss test he will allow retakes.
He seems to focus more on being witty/funny while bashing conservatives than he does on the topic. I'm a liberal myself, but I found his extremely biased words to be annoying. His tests are so unconventional and unprofessional that it is hard to take him seriously. The extra credit videos are the most interesting and informative piece of the course.
Awesome Prof! Attendance is not mandatory but if you wanna pass and get a good grade you definately need to go, he makes an incredibly boring subject such as government super entertaining. He's hilarious and if you're the type of person that gets easily annoyed by hearing others political's views. just leave but its always good to be openminded.
He is great!!! One of the best pols profs at UH
Howard is awesome! He's a sci-fi geek with some corny jokes... SUPER liberal, but hey you're in college so open your mind! A lot of tests, but a lot of extra credit as well! he'll make class go by fast.
I wish every professor was like Howard. He teaches the information well, and will keep you entertained with jokes. If you want an A, go to class because he tells you test questions. Theres 10 points of extra credit for every test, so take your test on time! All in all, AWESOME professor.
This class is kind of hard if government isnt really your thing. I went to class a few times but did not really get much out of it when I was there. The outlines that he provided were available online and they were helpful when studying to a certain degree. I mostly read through the chapters and outlined important events and people myself.
Swashbuckling wit
I didn't exactly like him for his tests. It's a hit or miss. Even after I studied the materials I would either fail, get a B, or out of luck, get an A. But he will give you plenty of laughs for his lectures. So if your schedule is kinda gloomy and don't mind moderate studying, he's your teacher.
He;s an ok teacher. I just really didnt like his tests, even if you study like crazy dont think you're going to make an A on it cus his tests are so RANDOM. but it's possible to make an A. If you want to be entertained just take him, if you want someone a bit more serious take someone else thats what I'm doing.
YOU HAVE TO ATTEND CLASS IN ORDER TO PASS. All tests come striaght from the stuff covered in class, pay attention in class and read the textbook then you should be okay on the tests. He has 6 test, but he has a 10 pt extra credit on each if you watch a video. He is a good professor and actually teaches you but a lot of his jokes are offending.
Very hard to know what to study for tests, he is very random in his questions. His jokes are VERY offensive i would not take him again
Howard is great !! Go to class because he tells you what will be on the test. Oh sometimes he put his jokes on his test o-o... there are 10 points extra credit for each test.
I took him for both core gov classes. He is hilarious, yes he is liberal so if Glenn Beck & Sarah Palin are your heros, don't take him. Tests are hit or miss. Sometimes reasy, sometimes hard. 6 tests, a chapter each test. Extra credit after each test which is helpful. I highly reccommend attending class. Print out the notes it can really help!
his test are hit or miss. you never really know what to study. class are not mandatory which is the only good think about this class. he thinks he is funny but hes not.
He is great!!! the best POlS teacher they have at this university!! take him!!!!
I did not like this professor! His lecture notes were unneccessary picture art that most of the time had nothing to do with the test. The tests were so random, never sure what exactly to study! I would NOT reccommend him if you don't wanna be lost! I will not take him for 1337! Not helpful at all, not very respectful!
Okay, so if you're a liberal then you will love this professor because all he does is scrutinize people of any other party. And all of the extra credit videos are ways for him to spread his liberal propaganda. It's also kind of hard to follow him when he teaches.
FUNNY guy! Very sarcastic, pay attention to his jokes, take good notes & read the book. Good Prof!
I hate this teacher! It took me damn near ALL semester 2 finally figure out how to pass a test n his class...be prepared to read a packet of computer paper worth of notes per test to even think about passing
I took Howard for both 1336 & 1337 and I would say go to class because he rewards those who do by skipping unncessary notes that those who don't attend class wouldn't know otherwise. Tests are iffy and i couldn't figure out material on test for the second section. He does give extra credit though and all 6 exams weigh equally. He is very liberal.
He's really funny. I wouldn't call extra credit videos from PBS liberal propaganda. Sometimes it is hard to know what will be on the test but I managed to make an A with some extra credit. Pay attention to his jokes/stories. If you're really conservative I would find a different professor.
BADAZZ TEACHER! i loved the class. I got over a 100 in the class, and came about 50% of the time. Reading the online notes are mandatory to pass the 6 test that are given, and reading over the defintions in the book def helps too. you get at least 10 points of extra credit on each test. overall i recommend, howard is hilarious! Cusses alot.
TAKE THIS CLASS!!! howard is GREAT! i highly recommend using a voice recorder bc he goes kinda fast. there are 6 tests all with extra credit up to 10pts but DO NOT WAIT TIL THE LAST MINUTE TO TAKE THE TESTS YOU WILL BE SORRY! he allows make ups but dont push it off just dont be lazy and take it when you can. class is funny its a comedy class.easy A
Great and hilarious lecturer if you do end up going to class! His notes are basically what he lectures but the incentive of going is that on test he will ask q's from lectures. Test are all multiple choice and u get extra credit. Very fair grading.
Awesome teacher. Really does make a boring subject interesting (I had no interest going in). Attendance not necessary but I'd recommend it. Studied the night before most tests (ppt online) & got an A in the class with help from the eXtra credit. Book req. for some test quests + There are makeups if you miss the tests. A Funny & Informative course.
Very funny. I loved attending his class. He makes whatever he's teaching clear enough for everyone to understand. Class in not mandatory, but most of his lectures always end up on his test. I would take him again.
Funniest teacher I've had at UH! Lectures aren't mandatory but some questions on the test appear from his lectures. With help of 10pt extra credit quizzes and only studying the night before exams managaed to get an easy A-
This is a teach yourself class. He post the notes that he goes over in class online so I never went to class. He tries to make the subject funny but it wasn't enough to make me wanna be in class. Some questions from the test are from the book so i highly suggest you get it.
I really enjoyed this course. His lectures are entertaining (plus they really help you on the test), so go to class! He gives an ample amount of extra credit, and the extra credit videos are very informative and interesting. I highly recommend this professor and I would definitely take from him again if I could.
Yeahh, sure. His lectures may be "entertaining," but do they help you on the test? Don't think so. Notes are totally incomprehensible. Very unprofessional. Cusses ALL the time. Says inappropriate comments. Puts jokes on the tests. Come on now, Really? May be "funny" and "entertaining" but really doesn't help much on the test.
Entertaining lectures, but they do not help on the test. Some random tidbits from his lectures (off topic) are on the test so pay attention! I basically wrote down everything he talked about even if it didnt apply to the topic. Depended heavily on the book for material.
This guy is HILARIOUS! His tests are not random you just need to make sure to: Go to class, a lot of the tests come from the lectures; use the book; Read his notes beforehand, because he tends to drift of a bit from the main topic on the lectures and Take the extra cred. If you want to LEARN something did I mention he?s hilarious?
best professor ever!! lectures were very funny, kinda sarcastic in a good way... was never bored in class. attendance is not mandatory but you wont do well on tests unless you go. lots of extra credit, got an A because of it. just review your notes and skim though the book and you'll be fine
He is a great teacher!! Makes you laugh in class. It is important that you attend class to pass the exams. He offers A LOT of extra credit!!! and makes the class interesting by adding sarcastic humor in the lecture. I would definitely take him again! :)
the best pols teacher in UH! all the test questions come from his powerpoint lectures. i barely went to class, read the power point the day before the test and got an A an all of them! i swear this is a big gap booster class, and im no genius by no means , he is funny , the class is easy , no quiz or homework due, and the test is multiple choicewow
The most entertaining professor ever. He keeps lectures funny and entertaining. He swears quite a bit and is biased in terms of political views. If your ultra conservative, do not take his class. Has interesting stories and notes. Tests basically come from the notes, and some questions on statistics come from the book.
Professor Howard is pretty unique I must say. The class is pretty easy, just go over the notes before the exam. He gives a lot of extra credit so there is no way you can fail.
He is easy all you have to do is study a little and make sure you read the book because you will need it he gives some of the answers to the question in class so it wouldnt hurt to go. So much extra credit that if you fail then you did nothing
He is a VERY hard teacher! His test are very confusing and hard...like when you are taking the test you think you know it and you think you got a good grade but when you see your grade you are shocked! He gives extra credit but it doesn't help much if you fail the test. I recommend that you don't take this teacher unless you want your GPA to drop!:
super hard! he's very funny but the tests are random. Great guy knows his stuff...liberal...but the testing is the problem. seems more heavily on his lectures he tests on.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!!!!!!!! His lectures have asbolutely nothing to do with the test. I am in an honor society and tend to do well in every class, although I also have my flaws. But This teacher....is horrible. Difficult class beyond means, impossible to get even a "B". DONT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WORST TEACHER EVER!!! He has a melatone voice so if u want to fall asleep and fail a class this is your guy.I dont reccomend him to anyone!!!! If you have his class drop it immediately..NOT WORTH IT!!
He's a cool guy and his lectures are semi-entertaining with his jokes and stories..BUT..his tests are ridiculous! Completely random. He goes off of his notes which are pages and PAGES of COMPLETE rubbish. He intentionally fills the notes with BS so that if you don't go to class you have no idea what to study. Nice guy, but I wouldn't recommend him
He is an entertaining professor and his lectures never put me to sleep because of the stories and jokes he tells. However, coming to class and taking notes is very helpful because a lot of the test is based on his lectures. He gives extra credit on these tests. As long as you pay attention and read you will get an A or B easily.
This pof is really hilarious, i would recommend attending class because he drops hints on what will be on the test sometimes. Plus, for ppl who say his notes are confusing and you don't know what to study, he has a study guide in the syllabus that tells you what to look out for in his notes!! and i feel he is just trying to keep political science li
He's hilarious prof, awesome on in lec and test r hard and random. I wouldn't recommend you to take this class if you want A in this class. You have to read all his notes which are about 60-70 pages each and their r 6 exams and each exam have about 3 topic and each of them have 60-70 pages long lectures + txt book pages. It's time consuming.
I would NOT recommend this class. There are six tests each over about 4 chapters each and at LEAST 60 pages of lec notes. I have attended class, read the chaqpters and notes AND done the learning modules and still only managed a 70 avg. on tests. His funny stories DO NOT make up for the randomness and difficulty of tests! NOT RECOMMENDED
He loves sarcasm and is a very interesting person although his class is about random things unrelated to the tests. 6 tests not bad if you do completely bad in one of them. He gives extra credit for every test. Funny guy, I would say he is average.
Must've had a stick up his "you know what" for the semester I took him. Tests are difficult and draw more from the book than the lectures. However, his lectures are interesting and he drops f-bombs all the time, he seems to be socialist, always bashing on republicans. Really opens your mind to other alternatives. About average in difficulty.
Where do I begin with this guy? His notes are very long, and incomprehensible. Not quite clear about what to expect on the exam. He is very unorganized. Study book and lecture notes to pass. GO TO CLASS. He puts ridiculous questions on the test, and you would only know the answer to that question if you went to class. Humorous though.
Hilarious professor, got a bunch of interesting, funny tidbits up his sleeve, but keep an open mind. Tests can get difficult without some good time studying prior, and some questions on it are just there to test your attendance. Extra credit, albeit sometimes a bit tedious, are informative and will definitely lend a hand. Overall enjoyable.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! he has a boring monotone voice. he makes his tests extremly hard if you are taking a test on chapter 1 he will have questions over chapters 2 and 3 in there to. he sucks. alo he never emails you back
hes cool n try to make things ez for us. however, i recommnd takn ur core classes at a CC. ALOT E Zer. core classes tend to be hard at this university! i am taking my core classes at COM AND ITS WAY ezier hist 1 and pols 1336 were a breeze. i took pols 2 and hist 2 @ UH and it was alot more work and run around not str8 to the point.
Howard is hilarious most days. Others you question why you attend class but once test days come up, it all makes sense. Not a hard class if you attend, take notes, and read the textbook readings that he CLEARLY lays out for you in the syllabus. It's college. You're going to be expected to learn some things on your own but he is very receptive to ?s
The thing about Howard is that he is HILARIOUS. His class is not boring at all and you find yourself laughing pretty much the whole time. But if you can, take someone else. He REALLY wastes time with his little stories and his tests are HARD as hell. Unless you have a photographic memory- find someone else.
He is a good teacher and I suggest you go to his lectures because he does have helpful and important things to say that are one the test. He gives plenty of chances for extra credit which brings your grade up dramatically. Overall just go to his classes, listen, write notes and you will be able to pass
I really enjoyed this class. But what I will say is yes...You must attend class and pay attention. He is absolutely hilarious and a great teacher. He really doesn't make hard for you and tries with the extra credit to help your grade as much as possible. If it says anything, I am enrolled in his class again!
nice and funny teacher, but he gave alot of extra credit. his tests were hard and you had to study alot to make an A on them but the extra credit would boost your grade if you did bad.. tell you the truth i would rather have a easy test with knowing whats on the test than have a vague test and have extra credit.
YES, HE GIVES ALOT OF EXTRA CREDIT BUT HELLOOOOO HIS TESTS ARE HARD! I RATHER JUST KNOW WHAT TO STUDY ON THE TEST AND MAKE AN A THAN HAVE TO BE CONFUSED ON THE MATERIAL N THEN REDEEM MYSELF WITH EXTRA CREDIT. ITS RIDICULOUS. the extra credit makes it seem like you have all these points but really he just makes the tests super hard.
Extremely funny! Keeps it interesting. Hard tests but so so so much extra credit! The extra credit is how i passed. All the notes are online and so are the extra credit quizzes and movies. I got a B with minimal studying and all the extra credit. So he is not a bad choice.
Prof. Howard is not your common professor. He's very funny but his jokes tend to be off-color & sometimes very rude. Class lectures are sometimes difficult to follow because he strays into a lot of his opinion & other stories. His tests are pretty easy IF you do the learning modules on BBoard but VERY DETAILED so READ the BOOK. good luck!
i dont know what these people are talking about with his tests being hard. his tests were straight out of his notes that he goes over in detail in class as well as the book...its not rocket science. he was very entertaining and the class was extremely easy to make an A with minimal studying. with the extra credit i made over 100 in this class.
WORST CLASS EVER!! TEST ARE EXTREMELY HARD! Mostly TRUE & FALSE & MATCHING.. Notes are 30-40 pages long and thats just 1 set of notes, usually there are 2-3 set of notes for every test, along with the 2 chapters of required readings which are also on the test.. Take it from a student who took this class as of fall 2010, lucky to get a D+
I passed his class without even buying the book. Just show up for class take notes even if they are online. and study them. watch the videos for the extra credit and you'll do fine.
As long as you attend the lectures (which are VERY VERY entertaining) then you will pass this class without a question. He provides extra credit movies after each exam which add up to 10 points to the test grade...what other college professor would do that?
Go to class, read the book, and take notes. He basically tells you what to write down from the notes which are lengthy so it helps. He gives extra credit for each test. Shows clips from The Daily Show and The Onion. You have to go to class because he will say something in class that won't be on the notes but is on the test. 6 exams for the class.
Class is funny so go to it. The test setup is like this 1/3 of it is from the lecture, 1/3 of it is from the provided notes, and 1/3 is from the book. I made the mistake of not buying the dang book not that you need it but if you want an A then you will. Good Professor tells you everything you need and try's to give all extra credit possible.
This guy is hilarious. I actually tell friends about some of those racy jokes. He is witty and makes the material fun. So far, the first test was just as he said it would be, over the notes/book. I'm sure the other 5 will be the same, so no worries here, he is a great professor and could do stand up if he wanted to.
Take him he is amzing! makes the subject fun. You will have to attend his class even though it attendance isnt mandatory as his online notes are huge a he tells you what isnt necessary, and he might say something in class which isnt in the text or notes. do read the text as 1/3rd of the questions are from there. Give Extracredit. Loved his class!
most people do bad in this class because they either think they dont have to come to class because the notes are provided or they choose not to read the book. You have to do both in order to pass this class I recieve a A because i went to class, took notes, read the book, and did all the extra credit.
I hate Poli Sci but he made it fun and very entertaining to come to class. I highly highly recommend him. He's hilarious!
This class can be really easy- as long as you put in some effort. Lecture is entertaining, which is good, because if you miss a lot of lectures you WILL NOT do well on exams. Also there are online resources to help you study the assigned readings (and readings are minimal with an average 2-3 chapters per exam). Taking him for POLS 1337 for sure!
I started off going to class and tried paying to the lecture but didn't work. You don't need to go to class. Just study his notes online, read the chapters, and look at the study modules. If you do that, you should make an A. He has extra credit for atleast 10 points for each test. Went to class like 6 times and gonna make a B
The class was easy. Read the notes and do the study modules and you can make an A. Extra credit for every test. Attendance isn't mandatory and he's pretty funny.
Not a very nice guy. Really sarcastic and unhelpful. Boring lectures. Tests are tricky and confusing. Extra credit won't help! Don't take this class unless you want your GPA to be fell!
Funny Professor but he tends to go off topic many of times. My gpa has fallen because of this class the only way I'm passing is because of the extra credit! If you have time to study all his notes and do all the readings then okay take this class . I put myself in danger by taking 5 courses so yeah if you have the time then go ahead take the class.
Keep up with the readings & study the notes posted online & you will do fine on exams. Extra credits will ensure you an A & they're really easy (note the deadline). Attendance isn't necessary to get an A, but I'd go just to hear him speak- guy's hilarious. Everything's in the syllabus, so don't annoy people with your dumb questions on blackboard.
He's hilarious, clear, and very biased. The class is easy, and it's worth going to. it's like going to a 3 hour comedy show every week. extra credit quizzees ensure an A. if you're on the left, you'll love him. Conservatives and Libertarians will be in for a "treat".
Awesome professor! really smart guy, and really funny. class is ALWAYS entertaining and informative. all his notes are posted online, and if you just listen in class and go over dem you can easily make a high grade. no homework, a lot of extra credit quizzes that can really help your grade. and class is very interesting and funny. take him! easy A
Really funny! ... If you do the online practice quizzes you'll do great! I didn't think it'd help but when I started doing them my grades were ALOT better. Tons of extra credit too!!
THE SYLLABUS IS THE BIBLE OF THE CLASS. ATTEND CLASS. READ BOOK. READ NOTES. DO EVERY EXTRA CREDIT... LOTS OF IT :)and you will do FINE!!! Professor is hilarious btw :)
Great professor. Informative and entertaining. He can move a little fast at times but he's almost never boring. Class was very easy due to all the extra credit. I made A's and B's on all my tests but still came out with a grade over 100. I read the chapters but a friend of mine and didn't open the book. She still got an A+
He's a very entertaining professor. Government and politics CAN be a boring subject to learn, but he mixes his humor into lectures and makes it easier to understand. Gives LOTS of extra credit, so even if you don't do too hot on exams, you can still boost yourself to a higher grade. Definitely recommended! :)
really funny prof. took him for pols 1337 and 1336. READ the syllabus! He gives A LOT of extra credit do them all and you should be fine. i didnt do well on the tests but still made a B+.
Tests were a bit harder than what you would expect if you judged how the material was presented in the lectures. However, you should have no problem overall if you study hard (read both his slides and the book) and do all of the extra credit. I had the luck of taking him during the summer where we could take our tests at home.
He is very rude and does not respond to student emails politely and respectfully, and will not give a direct answer to the original question. I do not recommend anyone taking his course. Please do not give this man more money.
Lectures get really boring & so far it's more helpful to read in class and just take the pearson quizzes to study.
Puts a lot of the learning in your hands which is not a bad thing, make sure to use the Pearson guides and flashcards and you'll be fine. Pay attention to his lectures and you'll get his jokes and time will fly. I'm one who usually has something to say about a professor, but Howard's definitely someone you want to take for your POLS credit.
Wow...This professor goes on delete negative comments posted by students...two legit comments entered yesterday one immediately deleted and the other deleted later. Dishonest, says one thing does another. Test are not validated to ensure they are measuring what's being taught, recommend you take during the summer at your local home town college
This professor is hilarious. He lectures over material and gives great examples in class. This is the professor you want to have for your Pols credit. Tests are very straight forward, read lecture notes and read required chapter and you're good to go.
Howard is so funny. Makes learning fun by adding his jokes. 6 Test all from lectures and readings with extra credit videos. Puts his notes online so attendance is not mandatory but he drops hints on test questions so good idea to go. Great teacher funny. Take him!
Funny guy, funny class. Attend lecture to get hints dropped about tests. It's not an super easy A, but if you attend & read the sections its not too hard either.
Great teacher!Hints about test dropped in class and gives a ton of extra credit out.Would recommend this professor.
the professor is very funny at times during the lecture and means well to help out students who are behind. the class should be easy if you attend class, following up by studying the lecture notes and reading over the required chapters. other than that he is very sarcastic and rude at students negligence.
Politics is never an easy subject but he makes it a lot easier to pay attention, notes SHOULD be taken, tests..take careful note of the finer things his tests can be extremely tricky if you 2nd guess yourself, but there is a lot of extra credit. Pretty much just go to class honestly your paying a lot for a class why not show up. Great Class.
Prof Howard is a great professor if you just put some time into it. His notes are quite long but you can cut out alot of it when studying. His questions from the Exam come right from his notes and from the learning modules on the chapters. His class can be an A if you just spend a couple hours studying for his exam and do the Extra Cedit.
Awesome and funny professor! Makes class very interesting. Gives about 6 exams in total all and final is not comprehensive. Gives a lot of extra credit. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Really funny professor. Tends to go off topic, but the class isn't difficult. There's an extra credit opportunity for every exam. If you fail, it's your own fault.
Hes a very sarcastic, funny, entertaining teacher. His lectures thoroughly go over information; though, I'd highly recommend reading assigned chapters if you want an A. He gives extra credit (up to 10 pts) on each test. I usually made Cs on tests. Only thing that bothered me was the ONLY grades are test grades. But I'd take him again & try harder.
Fun teacher. Tests can be hard if you don't study or read the text. Easy A if you put in the effort though, especially with all the extra credit opportunities. Other than that, you'll certainly enjoy his lectures.
Honestly, I hate political science with all my heart, HOWEVER, Prof. Howard is funny indeed and has a talent to make pols interesting for students like me)) I studied for the tests, took all extra credit opportunities, read chapters, and ended up with the grade I deserved. Great teacher, I'm gonna take his POLS 1336 next semester!
I am a computer science student who would never think of taking a political science course. Dr. Howard made me fall in love with POLS. Funny lectures, easy material, lots and lots of extra credit, easy A
I am taking his 1336 class also. I learned this material very well. Many test opportunities. E Book & online rescources available. ...[This class is not for people without a sense of humor. If you are easily offended, please do not rate him on this site. You sat in the class the whole semester and you still don't get it. :( ]
Great professor, wish I had taken him for POLS 1337. This class is an easy A if you do everything you're supposed to including the extra credit. The man is clear as can be and probably the most interesting professor you'll ever get. Really if you can't make an A in this class there is clearly something wrong with you.
He is clear about what he will do in class and put on the test. You do need the textbook. He is funny in class although some people find him boring. easy to pass course.
He gives a lot of extra credit. There were problems with our tests where we were getting questions from a different book so he ended up increasing the amount of extra credit we could get. There was no homework, just tests and extra credit. The class is definitely manageable.
has a great sense of humor and tons of extra credit. his class is very straight forward and easy if you pay attention. this class was fun to go to even though i hate the subject haha
interesting teacher and interesting videos he makes you watch for the exams. read over his notes, watch the video he tells you to for each exam, and do the extra credit he gives you. easy a
if you're not interested in pols or history don't take it at uh, go to hcc. altough the class is fair, the avg. for tests were always 70 for ppl and there is extra credit, but it's impossible to do good on them. People just love him cause he cusses a lot. but i will say if you study hard, it should be okay, but personally i hate the subject.
He is FUNNY but his exams are kind of hard. All his notes are online but they are too much to read. You can edit out and delete the un-necessary stuff. No need to go to class cause all the stuff is online, but going to his class is like going to a comedy show lol YES HE IS HILARIOUS.but again his tests are not fair.BUT he gives alot of extra credit
Tests are hard, quizes are hard and oh so tedious, it'll ruin your gpa
He is a really good teacher who knows what he is talking about. He likes to make a lot of jokes about one of our recent president. I think he gave us too much extra credit opportunity. Class is really entertaining. Compare to other history class you have to put way less effort to make an A.
Took him for both POLS 36 and 37. Very funny guy, and class is easy with all the extra credit he gives out.
EASIEST TEACHER I'VE HAD IN COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL! DO THE EXTRA CREDIT and if you still don't make an A there's something mentally wrong with you
Howard was super funny and really interesting to listen to. Although he was a dyed in the wool Democrat, I enjoyed him thoroughly! His class is easy as long as you show up and listen to his lecture.
I've never had a professor who knows so much about so many different topics. His class is very easy but he is so interesting that you will learn a ton without any added stress. Highly recommend.
One of the best lecturers I've had the pleasure of listening to at UH. One of the best professors I've ever had. His class is very interesting, one of the few I've actually walked away from with a feeling of accomplishment and further knowledge. I'm taking him again for POLS 1337 in the fall. Lots of reading but worth it. TAKE HIM, you won't regret
By far one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are extremely interesting, he offers a ton of extra credit, and his tests are all based on the lecture notes. TAKE HIM!!
Best professor at UH, unless you are a hardcore conservative, cause he will make fun of you. Crazy amount of extra credit (just doing the extra credit and nothing else you could get like a 30-40%). I got C+/B- on most the tests, but ended with 110% because of all the EC. You dont need the book if you share one with a friend (it is only for EC)
Whoever did not do well in this class must not have done any extra credit. He incorporates humor in his lectures, and his tests are straight from his lectures/notes. Tests however are a little difficult, for me at least. Doing extra credit definitely helps. I went from a D- to a B after completing extra credit.
Even though he's always talking about random things and playing random videos, his class is super easy. Don't really need to go to class cause his tests are online and at home. He talks bad about UH which makes me so mad though. But this is his last semester here so idk why I'm typing this...
One of the best professors taken! He offers so much extra credit and makes the class really fun. Test straight from notes. You don't even have to attend class.
AMAZING.
IF YOU HAD AN OPPORTUNITY AND STILL DIDN'T TAKE HIM THEN YOUR LOST!!!! JUST AN AMAZING PROFESSOR. AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is amazing! I looked forward to the antics that would occur in his class. He gave out more extra credit than you could believe. If you ever have an opportunity to take a class with him...do it! You will not regret it!
He was amazing! I'm so sad I only got the chance to take one Polysci class with him. He had an insane amount of extra credit and all the tests were online!
After POLS 1336 w/ Kyle Scott, I dreaded political science. BUT THIS GUY IS AWESOME! He makes the subject interesting and his slides are hilarious. Though sometimes, some obscure detail he mentioned in class would be tested... Memorize the slides and get an A!
I took both polysci classes with Howard and HE WAS BYFAR THE BEST! If you did not take him I feel sorry for you! he made class very interesting & the material not so boring!
One of the best professors taken. He makes the class really clear, lot of interesting real life examples, and offers so much extra office hours. Can't say that tests are easy, but all based on the lecture notes and assignments. Overall, worth it, take him. Good luck.
Excellent instructor
Hes okay. He rambles quite a bit. A bit confusing because he is so random. Class is not stressful. A lot of notes. I don't recommend taking him unless you enjoy a class that veers off into left field.
