Best Professor in the school! Guarenteed to inspire!
Easily the greatest prof I have ever had. Now I am seriously thinking about declaring a history major because of him.
This guy is awesome. He will teach you to think and to read history critically. One of the best profs I've ever had.
How kicks ass! No doubt about it, he'll tell you the funniest stories and talk just the way his students do. On the first day of class he didn't hesitate to call people ****s and swear in class. d
He's awesome. Great sense of humor. And after you learn about rome and greece, you see why the humor fits.
Howe is so much fun! He is animated, expressive, and asks questions that lead you to conclusions. He is also very knowledgable. I loved it!
Howe is the most amazing teacher on this campus. He is incredibly educated and he can teach a classroom better than anyone else. Regardless of whether you are a history major or not,i reccomend taking any of his classes because i have learned so much from his class.St Olaf does hire amazing profs
best professor i have ever had, great guy, very helpful and interesting readings and lectures. great class, he makes an effort to get to know each student personally and help them throigh the class.
An incredible prof. The most entertaining lectures imaginable.
Very nice professor, but unclear really about what he wants. Don't be optimistic about your grade even if you go talk to him.
Prof. Howe is great, his lectures are hilarious, he's very casual, he swears and you really feel comfortable in his class. It's discussion based, but in discussing he makes things understandable in a language people can understand.
Definitely the most engaging lecturer I have had in my 2 years here. He makes ancient history exciting, accessible, and interesting. Everything just made sense when he explained it. If you have to take a history course (and who doesn't?), take one from Howe. You won't regret it!
Amazing class, amazing prof. Very articulate and engaging.
My favorite professor at St. Olaf. He is very entertaining and educational in lecture. He's very personable and helpful in anything you might have questions about. He's also my advisor for my concentration and has been a tremendous help in that, as well trying to figure out future plans.
Howe is a wonderful professor and incredibly personal yet professional. One thing- make sure you turn in drafts/pin him down on assignments- he often doesn't communicate well in terms of what he's looking for. Overall, though, I'd give him an A!
howe has favorities. He speaks to them and ignores everybody else. He's arrogant and condescending. Avoid him.
At 8 am this is a tough class to get through. He thinks he's very witty and funny but his jokes can be offensive and he comes across as making fun of students. I'll never take another history class from this prof. Avoid him if you want a good grade.
I don't know what the 4 people who previously wrote were thinking but Howe is one of the best professors on this campus. If you are looking for an easy A or low expectation then I suggest you find a different class, however if you expect something from your education by all means take one of his classes. He is my favorite prof on campus!
I agree, Howe is the best professor on campus hands down. He is so helpful and he is an incredibly gifted speaker. He is so passionate about the material that he teaches, and he truly cares about his students. He is a very fair grader and he will give you the grade that you earn. We need more professors just like him.
Incredibly engaging lecturer, fair grader, always available to help students learn more.
Howe is great. He's funny, engaging, very energetic. He's tough, don't think its an easy ride, but you come out really knowing not only the history but the very culture itself. Warning: you'll only learn if you put forth effort and engage. He's old fasioned in text analysis but very good and clear. Truly loves the subject :)
This class made me hate history. The message was that we can never know anything and all class lectures supported this. I really didn't learn anything and I don't think this professor has anything to teach. If you are a history major take a non ancient class. I do NOT recommend any classes by this teacher.
Howe is the best prof on campus. His classes do require lots of reading and effort, but he is a very fair minded professor and your hard work will pay off. He is extremely intelligent and helpful- always available to discuss class work, or ancient history in general. The students are clearly his priority.
Professor Howe is an engaging lecturer and a brilliant man. He will help you in whatever way he can to be successful. Do your reading (well!) and participate in class, and you will be fine.
Amazing Professor. Very passionate about what he is teaching. He is very helpful if he can tell your participating in discussions (make sure you do) and trying hard. Best prof Ive had so far! Make sure you read the packets and take notes in class. Definitely take one of his classes if you can!
Best Professor Ive ever had. His lectures are so interesting and engaging. He makes you work hard for your grades, but he is very fair. If you are looking for an easy grade, then don't take him becuase you won't get it, but if you are looking for the most engaging intellectual experience of your life, then I highly recommend Dr. Howe.
Epic, interesting lectures and discussions. I recommend taking at least one of his classes if not more.
Amazing Professor. Definitely gives hard tests but he is very helpful with answering questions. Make sure you do readings and engage and you will love his classes. Very interesting and engaging. Favorite prof at Olaf!
Best prof I've had so far. He expects a lot from his students and if you don't participate, your grade will drop considerably. He is very clear about what he wants for his papers. Tends to get a sick a lot...
Great prof who knows his stuff. Makes you work for your grade but worth it for the great lectures and discussions. Participate in class and you will do well. Always willing to help and clarify anything. Tests didn't have any surprises and mostly covered material from class, but also incorporated the readings. Take one his classes if you can.
He was a good professor, especially with first-years. The class is entirely discussion based, which can be difficult with this topic. He was a fair grader, but all the assignments were papers. It was difficult to meet his standard if you didn't have first-year writing. He was sick a lot.
Tim Howe will work you to death. He will also be your friend and will do everything he can to help you out. He's smart, witty, somewhat Australian, and an overall fantastic guy. I really hope to take as many classes as I can with him.
Howe is the best professor at this school. Life changer...seriously.
Do not take a class from this prof. His expectations are unrealistic.
The reading and writing load will kill you slowly.
I agree. The reading and writing expectations are very unrealistic. There are interesting/less labor intensive HWC classes. Don't get bored to death at 8 am.
Nice Prof but pretty clueless about student workloads. This class was more like a 300+ than a 200. I agree that the expectations are unrealistic for a HWC.
I will never take another class with this prof. He is clueless and unfair in his expectations. There much are better history classes with interesting professors
Howe is awesome. The workload is ridiculous, but it is well worth it because of how much is learned. The essays can be overwhelming, but just go talk to him during office hours, he makes everything clear. Best professor I have had.
He is a tough grader but nobody gets students involved in and excited about the topics like Howe. Every class was lively and students basically took class discussions where they wanted. Take the class but expect to work. Also, he can be harder in lower level classes but I've found that his seminars are usually easier in terms of workload.
Not in touch with reality and in love with his own ideas. Expects students to parrot what he says or else. Take another HWC if you care about your education and your grade. Worst prof in the history department.
Ancient Greece is the worst class to take at 8 am. He is really boring and will sabatoge your grade. I am a history major and I can't believe they let him teach this class. Avoid
I agree. I took Anc Greece as a first year and it was awful. Boring with way too much reading and writing. This is a terrible class, especially for first years. There are so many good European history courses that fulfill HWC. Avoid this one!
The monotone, the umms and uhhs, and the workload will slowly kill you. Howe does not care about your grade and doesn't even seem to like students much. Take a different class.
The amount of work that Howe asks students to do is absurd. We have more than just one class and this class alone had more homework than all my other classes combined. (not an exaggeration)
I agree. Howe is just a bad teacher. Workload is ridiculous and he loves to talk, talk, talk. I had heard good things about Ancient Greece from friends but that voice drills into your head at 8 am. Howe has no sense of student workloads. As others say, take an interesting History class with a respectful and interesting teacher.
The class came highly recommended and I was highly disappointed. It was so boring and reading heavy that I had to drop it. I would avoid this prof at all cost.
Howe seems really nice, and claims to respect everyone's opinion, but there is only one right answer: his! Underneath the surface he is really arrogant and condescending. And he NEVER let's you work on homework in class. like the other History profs I've had. Unfortunately, I found out too late to drop. Avoid this prof. It's not worth it.
Howe is a hard. Plain and simple. If you are looking for a class to scoot by in skip over any of his classes. Homework is reading heavy, and you will find it hard to cut your papers down to 2 pages but overall I learned so much from this class. If you want to work and learn, take this class!
Con is a hard class but Howe makes it even harder because he does not know how to run a class. He is arrogant, presumes to know everything and does not tolerate dissenting views. If you get him, just parrot back his views and suffer through it. I wont take another class from Howe.
Howe obviously knows everything there is to know about the ancient world. He is very accessible, though, and he didn't try to dominate discussions in class at all. Very fair grader, never had a problem with his expectations.
Professor Howe really knows his stuff. He allowed discussion to flow naturally, but didn't allow any one person to dominate the discussion. I would highly recommend him as a teacher.
He may know a lot but is not open to new ideas and he does all of the talking--all reading has to be done as homework. Memorize his lectures, ignore what you learned in other classes and you will do well but DO NOT disagree with him. A pretty boring way to earn an HWC. Avoid this prof.
Ancient Greece is a great class if you like sleep. Howe is boring and will put you to sleep every day with his random lectures. A bad class for first years. Too much reading and NO discussing. You have to memorize the lecture to pass the exam. Staaaaay Away!
Howe is so bad that my high school teachers look like geniuses. Avoid at all costs!
Howe is arrogant, plain a simple. He thinks he knows more than any Alexander scholar and enjoys using class to show off. Avoid!
His arrogance and lack of respect for his his students turned me off to all things Ancient Greece. Even as a history major I did not enjoy any part of his class.
Professor Howe is one of the most demanding professors at St. Olaf and teaches a very tough class. However, he is also one of the best instructors for anybody who plans to enter an academically rigorous field. He gives an full survey of available evidence for long reading assignments and expects answers from that evidence, not speculation.
Nice guy but misguided. Not interested in other points of view, especially ethical/moral views about Romans. DO NOT mention progress of human society in his class--guaranteed low grade. Pretty superficial view of history and in love with his own brilliance. Avoid if you are Classics, Religion or Philosophy major. Basically just avoid.
Anc Rome is an annoying class. Some of your grade is based on discussion. It was very hard to talk because of his posse. It's like he has a whole group of best friend students. Rambles on at 8am with no real structure. I will admit that I fell asleep twice. Avoid.
Seeing a lot of negative comments, so I'm going to weigh in for Howe. Don't take his classes if you just want an easy A, but you just have to ask for help. He's incredibly knowledgeable and really helpful: meet with him outside of class and ask for tips on your papers for better grades. He'll even proofread your papers if you ask him.
Really random and unclear. Disrespectful to students. Changes assignments midstream and doesn't hold office hours. There are better history classes. This one is a train wreck.
I was really surprised when I say Howe at only a 3.4 or so. I'll admit, Ancient Warfare has a lot of reading, but it is all very adventurous and exciting. Class is very discussion based, but it is also relaxed and you can feel free to be as informal as you want with him. For example being honorable in ancient Greece was refered to as BAMF status.
Homework is reading and there is a lot of it, but it's not unmanageable. You're expected to participate in class as well, so if you want a decent participation grade, try to talk at least once a class. He's a hard grader, but tremendously helpful if you see him during office hours. If you put in the effort, you'll be fine. Great lecturer.
Tough class. I'm a great con "grad," so I'm a bit desensitized to long reading assignments and hard-to-crack sourcebook readings. Some of Howe's jokes are unfortunate andor slightly offensive. But the class was very interesting, he was extremely helpful. Try not to dislike him, have a positive attitude, and I think you'll learn a lot. I did.
I agree with the earlier posts, howe is offensive and arrogant and in love with his own ideas. I have studied all of the texts we read in classics and gcon classes and was really surprised with howe's unusual interpretations. As others have said, be prepared to dislike him and try to get through it.
Tim Howe is the best teach I had in my time at St. Olaf. He always cares, gives insightful readings, and is the best lecturer I have ever had. Highly, highly recommended as long as you are willing to pay attention and work hard.
Howe has a huge ego and constantly refers to his own work. He does not tolerate any dissenting views and makes offensive comments often. If you have to take his class for the premodern history requirement, try to parrot back what he wants and praise his ideas. he loves an audience. Avoid if you can!
Prof. Howe is the man. He's egotistical, but also very well versed on the material. If you want an engaging class take his seminar, one of the best classes I've ever taken at Olaf. A most dope man.
Howe's classes are one of things I will miss most after graduating. He is a stellar teacher and advisor. Some people think he is arrogant and thinks he has all the answers but really he tries to push his students to think critically and creatively about history.
Epic Class! A must, must, must take professor. The class is like one never-ending story and Howe is your mentor as you work through the writings of the Greeks to re-tell it. He has a away of asking the right questions to get you thinking. Open to all ideas: the class is students creating a new History of Greece. Wish all courses were like this.
Prof. Howe is such a great person and really cares about how his students do. He makes himself available and helps students challenge their historical approach and analysis. Also, his lectures are really interesting!
Howe is one of the most intelligent and well-informed people that I have ever met, and his class discussions always get me to think outside the box. He is very clear with his expectations, and he always engages the class and is very encouraging. I DEFINITELY recommend taking one of his classes!
Probably one of my favorite professors ever! I actually considered a history major to take more classes with him! HIST 190 is amazing with him. 10/10
Professor Howe is my favorite professor at St. Olaf. While Howe is a great lecturer and very good at leading discussion, his excellence is most noticeable if you visit him in office hours. He is so helpful and caring and will help your projects, papers, and ideas improve tremendously. He is a fair grader but expects a lot, be prepared to read.
Professor Howe is by far one of the best profs at Olaf! His classes are always entertaining and informative. He doesn't make students memorize random dates and names, he actually teaches us how to think like historians and critically analyze sources. On top of that, he actually cares about his students and is just an amazing person in general!
Prof Howe is, in my opinion, the best professor at Olaf. He does expect alot from his students, but only because he knows the harder he pushes us the more we will grow and learn. Howe does a great job facilitating discussion and creating a space for students to explore various ideas. Also, it does always help to go into his office hours!
Professor Howe is one of the best professors at St. Olaf and in the History department. He really wants to know his students and cares about them, all you have to do is show up and put effort into class, and go to his office hours! As long as you show any interest and care for the class you will get a good grade and have an amzing experience.
Tim gives AMAZING lectures! I took Ancient Greece and really enjoyed it. It is a tough course and you have to really work for your grade. There are 3 papers that you really need to put genuine work into. Tests are essay-heavy, but you give your OPINION, and use evidence learned in class to prove it. Tim is great but also a tough grader, so beware.
amount of work is overwhelming. It is also frustrating because once the course went online howe just stopped teaching. This class is a train wreck.
Little structure, lots and lots of useless reading, tough exams, judges ancients by modern standards.
Excellent professor. Not the easiest class, but worth it.
Prof. Howe was understanding given everything that was happening in 2020: he made the homework outlined and available from the beginning of the semester to the end if you wanted to get ahead. He broke up the reading by groups and had class notes which was really helpful. For the essays he was so helpful with brainstorming and graded leniently.
Probably the most organized and precise professors on campus. Moodle sites are really good and assignments are always clear. Gives great, personalized feedback and really cares about your grade. Draws good connections and makes the class relevant. Lectures are are like a big story and you want to hear the next chapter
Professor Howe was easily my favorite professor this year. Incredibly organized, great lecturer, and really caring and considerate towards students. Class had readings from two books but no textbook. He really pushes you to make insights and write a specific way, but any difficulties can be smoothed out in office hours.
One of the most amazing lecturers I've ever had! Made Ancient Rome incredibly interesting, even for a non-major like me. Also is incredibly organized and cares about students. Participation does matter, so if you are a quieter student like me, know you might get docked a grade for not talking enough in class. Still, highly recommend Howe!
I really enjoyed my seminar with Professor Howe! He is such a funny, kind, and knowledgeable person and is welcoming to people of all different backgrounds and majors! This class was heavy in reading, as it was necessary for discussion to take place, but if you missed a day of reading, it was not the end of the world.
Prof. Howe teaches a lot of really helpful skills while also teaching in a subject he's passionate about. I highly recommend his courses, but only if you're willing to do the work and are interested, as would he. There is community in his seminars. His office hours are really helpful, and you should attend them to understand his angle in grading.
I took this course for an HWC and I am not a huge history person to begin with, but professor howe is so passionate about his work that it made it interesting. There were two papers and two exams in this course. I did not think it was an overload of work and coming to the lectures is what will make you successful in his course.
Tons of reading, very little lecture, mostly class-long discussions
Dr Howe is very funny, has engaging lectures, and gets people talking even during his lectures. His main skill is just making classes fun, so he's easy to take notes for. So passionate about his subjects, Roman history was fascinating bc of him. He does generally like the people who speak the most in class, so be aware of that
He is probably the best History professor/teacher you will ever have. his class was very fun to be a part of, you just have to be careful that you'll accidentally declare a history major after.
prof howe is an amazing professor. his classes are very lecture heavy and you need to real A LOT but they're very engaging. exams are all timed essays. he gets feedback to you by the next time you have his class. overall huge fan and hope i can take more classes from him in the future.
had fantasies of a strong class bond where we were all friends and shared notes, but never gave any time in class for us to get to know more than the people directly next to us. He clearly cared about the subject and loved when we showed interest. Could've been a fun guy but was so massively pro-ai that it got hard to like him
Dr. Howe is an absolutely amazing professor! He's so engaging and deeply qualified to teach the subject matter of his courses. Definitely take a class with him if you ever get the opportunity!
I appreciated the sense of community we had in Ancient Greece. there was so much give and take on the google doc notes. Howe really helps students form their own opinions and build the confidence to share them.
