He is super nice and very good looking.
While Howley seems like a nice enough guy, he makes what should be a simple class unnecessarily difficult and boring. Avoid if possible.
Mr. Howley is an amazing teacher. I highly recommend him.
young guy that can really relate to his students. makes class fun and boring topics interesting. i would definitely recommend him!
Instructor means well, but the course is very demanding for a GenEd. Do the reading in the textbook and study for tests and you will do fine. Don't and you will do fine, but a little less fine.
Lecture is pretty fast paced and doesn't waste time explaining the power point lecture notes. You have to read to get the information you need to do well on tests. Overall, more work than you'd expect with gened but you'll do fine if you put in the effort or are genuinely interested.
He is one of the nicest professors I have ever had! He keeps a positive attitude always through out the class. Projects are little bit demanding for a gened, although the grad student grades them. Make sure you study for the tests, the study guides are usually very helpful!
Tim is the man! He makes the class fun. The lecture part is kind of annoying, but ya gotta take it right? Study the day before the test and you'll get a B for sure. Study more and you'll get an A. He takes off for attendance so if you don't like going to every class, look for another prof.
Great, personable guy. Really enjoys what he's doing- but do the readings or you will bomb tests.
He is such a great professor. I really enjoyed this class and thought he did a great job teaching the material. The class is pretty much based right off the book so you must buy the textbook in order to do well on tests and in class assignments like hot seat. You are assigned a group that you have to sit with everyday and do a project with.
Love Mr. Howley. Very personable guy who makes this boring class interesting. The book is a MUST as class assignments and tests are based off of them. To study for tests follow along power-points with the book and you should do fine. Attendance isn't mandatory but he takes attendance, so it's up to you!
The material for this course is dull but Mr. Howley makes it as entertaining as possible. The tests are straight from the power-points but you should still read the book as well. Take him if you can!
Howley is awesome. Kind of a hard grader on assignments but not impossible to get an A. Study powerpoints for tests and know the statistics!Howley is very funny and cool and so easy to relate too since he is young. Genuinely cares about students, class is very reasonable.
Attendance is not mandatory but he makes you want to be there every class. He is the most attractive teacher ever. His tests are from the power point and the book.... READ THE BOOK. He offers extra credit if you offer an idea so anything you think may relate to the class ask about it!
Really good professor but he is really young so its obvious he is still learning himself. Funny :) Although classes arent mandatory he does have in class assignments that if you miss you cant take later. Highly recommended to go to class because he gives somes things that arent in the book but on the exam. I recommend him for HTH 230.
Please, Please take Howley! The man is hilarious and the class isn't all that difficult, you only have to study a little to get a good grade. He does this thing called "Hot Seat" that might freak you out, but its so easy and an awesome grade booster. There's two writing assignments that are really easy as well. Take him!
Mr.Howley is so nice. You should definitely take this class if you have a chance. He makes class interesting. You will do well on the test if you pay attention in class you do have to read the book sometimes though and 1 group paper and 2 individual. overall not bad really enjoyed the class
I am the only person who wasn't the biggest fan of him. I think it was mainly due to the group work. Pretty much everything is group work. You don't have to try hard to get a B or C on the tests.
Nice guy. Tests are straightfoward. Just study like always. The only thing I wished he didn't do as much would be the fact that he would get off topic sometimes lol,but it did make class bearable.
I love howley. He's so cute. He's kind of a tough grader & classes are sometimes boring since the material is stuff you learn in other classes, & there's group stuff, but it's NOT a bad class at all. He went to JMU so he can relate to students. I would definitely take another class with him if I could. If it fits in your schedule, take him!
This class is kind of redundant since it is everything you learn in all the other HTH classes. Howley is amazing though. He tries to make class interesting, always talks about his kids and JMU, and is a pretty sweet guy. There's group work which isn't bad at all, and don't let the Hot Seat intimidate you its the easiest thing ever.
The class is fun, Professor Howley is a nice guy, always talking about his kids and JMU. The work is not too bad, take him.
I loved him! He made all of the material very interesting and explained it in terms of things that we could relate to. He used lots of examples from TV shows like Jersey Shore and Teen Mom. He went to JMU and is always telling us about his experiences. There is a service learning portion, but I actually really enjoyed it. TAKE HIM! HE'S GREAT!
People seem to really like him but I can't stand him. He doesn't have a mandatory attendance policy but you have to go to class because a lot of his test questions come from useless info he mentions in class and he has in class assignments that he uses to grade your attendance. Tests aren't hard I got a B without trying but he's super boring.
This was his first time teaching but he did pretty good! His tests are hard and tricky, its just how Howley is. However he is always available for office hours. No final just a group presentation. Quizzes on BB and in class in groups. In class assignments that are easy. Definitely not an easy A but he's worth going to class to learn from.
Professor Howley is awesome! He's young so he is pretty easy-going and fun! His class is not super easy by any means, but you can manage a decent grade. I recommend him because hes such a nice guy!
Helathcare was a hard class but it was his first semester teaching it. He's really nice though and very willing to help your grade out. 3 tests 5 group quizzes and a final presentation. The text book was super dry and the content was boring. I feel bad because he tried to make it as interesting as possible. Its manageable to get a B. Take him!
Prof. Howley is great! easy to understand, makes class interesting, and tests aren't worth a huge chunk of your grade! take him all the other hth230 professors suck
Alot of people complain about his tests. They are very specific. Take very good notes in class and make sure to listen to his examples. Overall an easy class.
His tests are definitely not easy and reading the textbook is VERY important. Some say the other professors for this class are easier so try to avoid if you have a hard time with complex multiple choice!
I took him for HLT 230, thinking it would be a fun course. This course is so boring, his tests are extremely hard and straight from 100+ pages of reading that he barely discusses in class. If you want to teach yourself, take him, otherwise I'd go with another professor.
Howley's class was very interesting and not difficult. There is 12 mandatory community service hours, which is difficult to complete if you don't have a car, but not impossible. DEFINITELY study the book for the tests, class lectures are not enough. I highly recommend!
Absolutely loved him. He's so cute and hilarious, loves relating to JMU students. I didn't think the tests were hard at all. As long as you read the book and take good notes, literally so easy. I studied then went out the night before and still got a 100. Papers and projects were a little harsher graded but the tests will bring you up. No final.
Howley is funny and his lectures are easy to listen to. He tells a lot of stories that will help you understand the criteria. If you read his powerpoints and skim the book you should expect a B on his tests. He is clear with his expectations on assignments and papers. Overall, I really enjoyed his class and I recommend you take it with him.
Easiest class ever with the easiest professor ever. We literally did nothing at all.
Tim rocks! This class was easy to begin with, but he made this boring class fun... Plus, he's cute )
HTH 150 is easy but pointless. Classes consist of lectures, group activities, and faculty presentations. Homework includes Canvas discussion posts, peer evaluations, a group written project, and a personal statement essay. Makes friends with your group and work with each other by sharing notes, because attendance isn't necessary.
HTH 150 is required for health science but it is such a pointless 1 credit class. class meets once a week for 50 minutes and consists of group assignments and guest speakers. tim is a great guy and is there to do whatever he can for students. class is pointless no matter who you take it with but tim was great. take him if he's open
This class is not that hard at first glance, but tests are tricky. Average grade on tests is usually a C+. Howley is entertaining though, and will help you if you don't understand the material.
This class is really not necessary and the material sucks, but Howley does the best he can to keep a light atmosphere and a fun environment in the class. Class is mandatory, but most of it is class activities in groups. There is a community service requirement of 15hrs and you have to go through the JMU agency (you can't do rescue squad or SPCA)
I love Prof. Howley! I had him for HTH 150 and decided to take him again for HTH 231. He does require a bit of reading but the class is interesting. Howley is so adorable! He loves what he teaches and relays it well to his students. Highly recommended! Only two tests, class discussions are interesting, 15 service hours with a group project
Hes a great guy but his class sucks and his tests are ridiculously hard.
WOW this class is ridiculous. His tests are impossible, there are 2 tests one for mid-term and one for finals and the average on them was in the 50s and there are No curves. Don't take this class its a JOKE. I got a B in chem 131 and A in Anatomy. MY final grade in his class was a 61 D-, so am retaking it. Nice guy overall.
His tests are tricky. Overall he is really chill and nice.
Mr. Howley is a great guy! His classes are tough though because he isn't very clear exactly what will be on tests. And there aren't many tests, so it's hard to recover from a bad grade. I've taken him twice and this has happened both times! Love him as a person, but I wouldn't take him as a prof again.
I took him for both 230 and 354, and hes amazing. He's really interesed in the subjects and enjoys teaching. His powerpoints are just an outline for what you need to go back and study from the book. But if you do that you'll do fine. I did that for every test in 354 and I got an A in the class. He also does a group final project instead of an exam.
One thing I regret this semester is taking his class. Worst teacher!!!!
Every test we didnt know whats going to be on it and the class average was C-. Not a good teacher at all, but a nice person.
Tim Howley was GREAT! He makes it so that you really enjoy coming to class. His tests can be tricky, but as long as you study, it shouldn't be a problem. Super funny, and genuinely nice. He makes you work for your grade, but he's definitely there to help when you need it. Favorite class at JMU so far!
Tim is one of my favorite professors at JMU. He is always there to help. There were quizzes each week from the book but the tests are mainly from the power point. He puts most of his quiz questions on the tests. Final is a group project.
Assignments are not too difficult BUT his test questions are very specific. There's also 15 additional service hours that you should start early on. Class attendance does not count towards your grade but any small detail can appear on a test.
Lots of pointless assignments. Two tests that are fair BUT it's easy to lose points on specifics. For example, test questions will have specific stats and you will have to know the exact country or percentage. Questions have specific quotes and you will need to know what they mean/who said them. Howley is a nice guy but didn't like his teaching.
Howley is an awesome professor. I loved his classes and he is all around a cool guy to talk to. Cons- his tests are very tricky and you have to keep up with the reading. Pros- There is no final for the class, just an easy final project. MEDN
Very entertaining teacher, who uses videos, talk radios, articles, and documentaries to spice up the dullness of Healthcare systems. Everything he says in class is testable and important, so take good notes! Hard grader but with good notes an A is possible. Group Project for final. Loves discussion board posts. Very helpful in office hours.
Howley is a great professor. Run through the slides in class, only the important info is on there. Look to the text for that easy A. 3 exams, 1 final group project, some smaller assignments. Howley likes interaction with his students so he does his best to keep the material relevant and funny. Definitely take this class.
Hands down the best professor I've taken at JMU. Very Friendly, turns the intimidating 40 person class into a very fun and welcoming class. Made the class feel like a family. Pretty easy class, like one reading per month, 15 community service hours was the hardest part, a couple easy grade booster assignments, tests are specific but very manageable
Professor Howley has by far been my favorite Health Science major professor! He cares so much about his job and students and keeps class interesting. I recommend taking any of his classes!
He is a great Professor! He is passionate about the courses he teaches. reading the text helps but not the end of the world if you dont. Go to class it makes tests so much easier. enthusiastic and caring professor. Howley can be sassy but it is so entertaining.
his tests are mostly vocab/concepts, random history facts from the book(esp presidents), &podcasts. his tests are sometimes hard because his lectures arent that great, he just reads from the ppt . read the topics to do well. if you can, take the easier prof for this class! if not, its not the end of the world with howley, just put in time to study
Howley is a great guy & fun professor, lecture is pretty simple & mostly from the powerpoints with a game or movie here & there. Compared to tests which are extremely tricky. He puts a lot of emphasis on tiny details which was really frustrating during tests. He says they'll be from lectures but i felt like i had to read the whole textbook to pass.
Terrible teacher. Tests are hard has questions with all of the above and except, Questions are very vauge and if you go in for office hours and ask about a question he doesn't know how to explain it. He thinks he's still a college frat boy. Do not take this class if you can!! book is not helpful except for group quizzes.
Howley is so sweet and if you pay attention to his lectures anything he repeats or seems super excited about will be on the test. If he says he thinks a particular fact is "super cool" it will more than likely be on a test. He required service learning for his 231 class and it boosts your grade if you actually go. DO NOT get the textbook, pointless
He uses his PowerPoints as an outline, they do not have a ton of actual information on the slides so it is a good idea to take note of what he says in lectures because that is the material he will test you on. This is a dry subject but he does his best to make it exciting with podcasts and games played in class. Would definitely recommend
He's really nice and cares about what he's teaching, but HTH150 felt like such a redundant class. We learned about citing, campus resources, and health careers. It was an easy class, but so boring. He's nice and tries to make the class fun and interactive with lots of group talks and projects. Tests aren't bad.
Professor Howley is such a nice man. I had him for HTH 150 which I feel like the class itself is pointless but he makes it somewhat interesting. Pay attention to the Ted Talks and go over the slides for the tests and they will be a breeze. There are a few group assignments but those are easy as well.
Howley is great guy, but an average teacher. Takes forever to grade things. This class felt really pointless. I didn't even know what to study for the midterm and final. Not bad though
howley is very nice and knows what he is talking about but the class isn't very structured. The tests were pretty hard because a lot of his questions aren't very clear and are subjective. easy solid B class.
Professor Howley is a really nice and funny professor. The book is needed for some in class quizzes, but as long as you go to class and take notes, this class is solid A/B class.
Professor Howley really makes 231 the easy class that it should be. There are two tests (midterm and final) so you have to do well on those to do well in the class, but if you go and pay attention it is all common sense! Attendance sheet is passed around but there is no policy in his syllabus
Health 150 is a super easy and Howley is hilarious. Class is kinda pointless and only meets for 50 minutes twice a week. We got out early almost every class. You don't really learn much in class but attendance will help you with the midterm and final, which are the biggest part of your grade. Howley is great. 10/10.
Nice guy. You get assigned a group for the semester. Hope you get a good group because you have group quizzes and assignments. Exams aren't that hard if you study for it.
Chill guy for a chill class. He doesn't make Intro Health Science any harder than it should be. Most likely the best professor for this specific class.
Class is pretty interesting and makes you think. Only 4 major grades and a ton of tiny 2 pt ones. Have to show up and pay attention in class bc the questions on the 2 tests, midterm and final, will come mainly from class. My only complaint was that he took alot of points off on major grades and didn't explain why. Tough to get a flat A
Howley is a great teacher and this is not a hard class but it is harder to get an A in it. There are only two tests in the class and they are based 100% on the lectures. No powerpoints are provided so you have to be really good at taking notes. Any small detail can appear on the test!
Professor Howley is a great person but a terrible professor. I had him for both HTH 150 and HTH 231 and I learned nothing throughout the semester. Both classes were graded based on two exams worth 50 points and a few two-point assignments. I didn't feel as if I were prepared for the exams because I wasn't sure what we even learned in the class.
if you give this class the amount of work you should(which is a lot guys i mean come on. this is college now things r getting REAL), you should be fine. he is a pretty good professor. if your class section doesnt talk tho he is going to hate all of u and throw temper tantrums. direct quote "i dont feel like talking to myself today so we are done"
Howley is a great person and does lighten the lectures because the information is so dry. Unfortunately, sometimes in class he tends to focus on irrelevant things that do not matter when it comes to learning. READ the textbook and study as much as possible.
Howley is a great professor. He does give group quizzes and 3 exams (which are all multiple choice, true/false and matching). There is a group project and he makes you sit with them in class (annotated bib and podcast). He is BIG on class participation and gets very tense if you no one talks. This class is doable if you put in the work.
This was a very easy class. it basically prepares you for a professional career in the health sciences and what to expect as you study it. We did lots of fun activities that related to professionalism, communication, and future careers. Howley is a very funny guy that cares for his students and their futures. Lots of guest speakers.
Highly recommend! He really cares about his students and connects well to students. Class discussions really made me see health in a new way. Changed my career goals to public health because of 231. Thanks Howley!
Love Howley! He's very passionate about course material. He shares good video clips and NPR/podcasts that bring material to life. I am addicted to NPR now!
The man, the myth, the legend!
Howley is AMAZING. If you have to take 354, take him. He is passionate about the material, funny, and a great choice. The entire class is based on groups and group work, besides exams. TAKE HIM. The man, the myth, the legend.
Howley is easily the best professor I have taken at JMU. He genuinely cares about all of his students, and he is hilarious. Lectures were so interesting and I actually enjoyed going to class. The only thing is lectures were heavily discussion based which made the tests kind of hard to study for, but other than that he was a great prof.
His lectures don't teach much, and you barely do anything in class. But overall the class is a really easy A. He is a great guy and he is hilarious. He does a good job of making class as fun as possible. There are only two tests, a midterm and a final and they are both really easy.
The G.O.A.T.
Howley was a great teacher and he was not a harsh grader over anything. Tests aren't bad, they're just really specific(so like if he mentions a percentage or year know that). The class is very group heavy, but as long as you have a good group you're fine.
Howley is a pretty easy teacher, but a lazy one. He does not care about the students grades. Paid $90 for a textbook he made it seem like we used and used it twice. If he cared about his students he wouldnt want you paying that much for something you dont use. Not knowledgeable on the subject, teaches the minimum to get a paycheck.
Professor Howley is really fair with his grading and assignments. There are only about four group reading quizzes, which he drops at least one of the lowest. The tests can be hard with matching and random comments he says in class, but if you take good notes in lectures you'll be fine. He is so funny and really enjoys teaching his class!!
Your grade in this class is basically tests which kinda suck because he is very specific. Everything you do is in a group so you sure like group work. There is a podcast and Ann bib. He's a great guy I just don't like the way he words his tests
THE GOAT
Howley is the BEST. He is so passionate about teaching and wants his students to do well. His tests can be hard, so it's important to take the time to study for them! You have the same group all semester and have many in class activities and a group project. Definitely take him if you have the chance!!!
Timothy Howley is honestly just a really great class. While the subject matter for this can be a bit dry sometimes he always makes sure class is upbeat and fun. Tests are not that hard as long as you study a little and you are put in a group at the beginning of the year to do a end of the year project. Loved this class!
Tim was a great professor and the class was fairly easy but he is the worst grader ever. Hes a harsh grader! But other than that I would recommend
Howley is one of the best profs I've had at JMU. He makes the class really interesting so much so that I don't mind going. He is so funny and relatable to students. TAKE HIM!
Howley is one of the sweetest professors here at JMU. He cares about his students and is super funny in lecture. The only thing that was rough was how specific his tests were. He posts powerpoint PDFs on Canvas, but they're pretty bare, so you need to go to class to get the material. Your other option is reading the book w/ lengthy chapters.
Very interesting person in and out of class. The only downfall is the grading. Most of the time he is fair, but sometimes wed get the grades we wouldnt have expected to get. Like we put in a lot of work and still dont get a perfect score. Not sure if I'd take him again.
The myth, the man, the legend. The absolute best - cant wait to take him again!!!
Howley is a great professor. His tests are very straightforward and there're lots of other assignments like in-class quizzes, DBs and group work to help cushion your grade. The final project seems fun and is done with your group. Book is only used for the quizzes and attendance technically isn't mandatory, but he has an attendance sheet every day.
Howley is a pretty solid choice for hth 354. Very funny and caring. My only complaint is that everything is group work, so exams are your time to shine if you want a good grade. There's quizzes, discussion boards, an annotated bib and a podcast. Textbook is not required, but it would be a good idea for at least 1 person in your group to have one!
Howley is one of the best health professors I've had. He is so genuine and truly cares about his students. He is hilarious and so easy to listen to. Tests are kinda tricky just because he likes to be specific on them, but they are doable. He cares about the overall well being of his students and is very inspirational.
Professor Howley is by far may favorite professor at JMU. His lectures are interesting and related to real world problems, he is super nice and easy to talk to, and he is very understanding. I would 100% take him again and would recommend him to anyone.
He actually cares about all of his students. He makes his lectures interesting and personal. I have recommended that all my friends take him. He is also very understanding and approachable with any questions or concerns you may have.
The main problem with this class was that the exams could be really hard and specific. Your final grade is pretty much based on three exams and one project, so if you fail one, you're screwed. There are a lot of small assignments online but they are worth so little they aren't a big deal as long as you do some.
I really enjoyed Professor Howley's class and I would definitely recommend taking him!! He is very approachable and you can tell he cares a lot about his students. His lectures were never boring/dry and he showed a lot of really interesting videos. All the material taught in the lecture clearly reflects what's on the exam.
Howley is a great professor. His lectures are never boring. However, his TA's grade most work, so they sometimes don't grade well. His tests are specific, so you benefit from attending class. The material however is easy. His tests pull things from videos you watch, audios, and the powerpoints.
This is my 2nd time taking Howley- he is a solid choice! He cares about what he's teaching and provides slides, videos, podcasts, articles, etc during lecture so it's never dry. However, I will say he gives WAY too much busy work that are worth nothing really but if you start to miss more than two they add up and hurt your grade. still rec though
Professor Howley is the absolute sweetest man. He was very kind towards his students and his class was fairly easy. If you can take him, definitely do because it is pretty much an easy A
One of the nicest humans ever!! If you have the chance I would take his class! It is a lot of information but its really interesting and he makes it fun!
BEST Professor ever!!!!
Professor Howley is by far the best professor I have had at JMU. I have his morning class MWF and he makes waking up early worth it. His class is the highlight of my day. He is caring, funny and a great teacher who wants all his students to succeed. He wants to get to know his students in and out of class. Highly recommend him.
Howley is probably one of the nicest and most caring professors at JMU. He truly wants the best for his students. You have a mid term final, and a couple other assignments through the semester. TAKE HIM!!! I haven't met someone who has not absolutely loved this guy
He is a good professor; however, his exams are very specific. Like asking where someone lived from a movie we watched in class. Also, be prepared to watch a lot of videos and movies
Howley is one of the best professors I had my time here at JMU. He genuinely cares about his students and goes out of his way to get to know all of us. He is always super happy and bubbly and full of fun!! I 100% recommend taking him if you have the chance to!
Howley is the best professor I ever had at JMU. He really loves to get to know you and is a really funny guy. His lectures are phenomenal but make sure you show up for class because he explains each bullet point on his slides very well. Don't buy the textbook, it's not required nor helps much.
Howley is extremely engaging and optimistic throughout the whole class. His lectures are really interesting, and exams are very straight forward. Only a midterm, final, and one group project. He barely gave any hw and when he did it was really quick and easy. Howley loves his job and really cares about each one of his students.
Howley is the best professor I've had at JMU. If you go to class and take good notes, you will do well.
Howley is the absolute best. He really cares about his students. He is super funny and class is really enjoyable. Lecture goes by super fast, he makes the material really interesting. Definitely would recommend taking him!
Professor Howley is my favorite professor at JMU. He cares so much about his students and is passionate about what he teaches. You need to go to lecture because what he says will be on the exams, not just the stuff on PowerPoints. I genuinely enjoyed going his lectures and I found what he taught to be relevant for my future in health care. TAKE HIM
Great guy cares about his students, but the weekly quizzes were a pain plus there was only 5 minutes to answer 5 questions so if you didn't know a question you were done for.
Great teacher and really cares about his students! The work was not bad at all but I did take it over the summer so not sure how it is during the semester but definitely recommend having him has your teacher!
This class was online and pretty asynchronous. He gives weekly assignments you can do on your own time, but they are really not hard, as long as you read that week's chapter of the textbook. Everything is open note.
Howley was an amazing professor. His class was online, however it was easy and the information was interesting. I would take him for every class if I could
Took this class online and it was very easy. Short exams and also still did well after not reading the Blue Zones completely. Had lots of assignmens but they were easy and brought my grade up.
I really like Howley. I'm not sure when he'll go back to teaching in person but try to take him either way. Most of his grades are made up by discussion posts which make sure to do them because if you get bad grades on tests the discussions will save you. Howley is a great professor and makes the course really easy.
Howley is a very good professor, and his classes are great to take online (taken him 2x online but not in person). There's not too a lot of work but you still learn a lot. Moderate amount of work each week, easy lectures, not too hard if you just pay attention and do the work on time. Tests are moderate too, but not super hard. Would def recommend!
Many small and simple assignments. The class is completely asynch and he posts short lecture videos. Weekly short quizzes, small assignments here and there, and one podcast assignment with a group. Great class and fairly easy to get an A.
The only time-consuming thing in this class was the 15-hour community service learning project. All of the other work took me less than an hour to complete (with reading and watching videos). Definitely recommend Howley!
Professor Howley will not answer your emails. Need to watch online lectures to do good on the quizzes, but some material on the exams is not found in the lectures. There is one group project which I felt was harshly graded considering the rubric and criteria.
This course wasn't terrible but definitely start the community service assignment earlier vs later. The quizzes were difficult and he was a bit of a harsh grader. I wouldn't personally recommend it if you are looking for an easy online class.
The GOAT! Dr. Howley truly cares about his students and their well-being. Take him if possible!
Had this guy last year online when he was getting treated for cancer. Now I have him again in person - even better this semester! Very inspirational and truly cares about his students. Has lots of stories to share in class and even went to JMU. Take Howley if you can!
Dr. Howley is one of the best professors I have taken at JMU! His class was super informative and relevant, but very easy. Take him if you get the chance!
Dr. Howley was awesome, he is really funny and makes his lectures entertaining. The assignments he gives are very simple and easy. He gives good feedback and is very understanding. Take him if you have the chance!
Attendence is mandatory but its not graded, you are just going to miss some videos that the tests will have questions on. You will also miss the extra credit and he won't send an email saying when it is. You do have to do 15 hours or community service or you can do an alternative assignment, which is a research paper. Overall the 15 hours isnt bad.
Professor Howley only had two exams, the midterm and final. Attendance was not required and every class is mostly lectures. He also did weekly quizzes and worksheets. His class was easy but the two exams were what I struggled with mostly. Still ended with a B.
howley is great, i couldn't recommend him more!
Dr. Howley is the GOAT.
Great professor! Highly recommend.
Take him!!! He genuinely cares and wants students to do well. As long as you go to class you will do well. The tests are on everything we talk about in class and he makes it very well known what will be on them.

People only like him because he is relatable to 20-year-olds. He is not an effective professor in my opinion. He also will not answer an email. If you want a funny & relatable professor take him. If not, take someone else. Average at best, I don't get the hype and took him multiple times (both online and in-person).
Hands down best professor in Health Sciences (and probably JMU). Cares about his students and shows up in meaningful ways. I had him for 2 classes and sad I can't take him again next semester!
Howley is overall a genuinely nice and kind guy. Tests are in person but the quizzes we have each week are online. Attendance is taken but it's not a complicated thing if you miss. The tests are straight from the lectures and the exam review days helped a lot. There is a group project but it's not that bad. Take him!!
Dr. Howley is a great professor who makes the material engaging. Although the exams can be challenging, the assignments are straightforward. Studying with tools like unstuck ai can really help prep for this class.
He is a great guy that cares about his students but his final exam sucked. The content was difficult and the questions were specific to things he said in class, videos, and readings. Had an A the whole year (90 on midterm and 94 on final project) and the final dropped me to a B. Would only recommend if you are tedious and disciplined w/ studying.
Cannot speak highly enough of Dr. Howley, took 231 and 354 w/ him he is the best. He is so fun lectures are never boring, and minimal outside work required. 2 exams midterm and final and a lot is from specific info in class so attendance and note taking needed. But his attendance policy is so chill and he is very understanding. 1000% recommend
Dr. Howley is a good professor! His lectures were engaging and not boring. He hardly gave homework. Very few quizzes, however, on quizzes, midterm, and exam he did have questions that were extremely specific which I think throws a lot of people off but it is still a great class. I recommend.
Howley was great. His tests were kind of hard but as long as you pay attention to what he says in class and study, you'll be fine
Howley is hands down one of the best professors in the health sciences department. I took his population health class this semester and he always had a way to make the content very engaging. Also, the service learning assignment is VERY important get started sooner rather than later
Howley makes it easy to thrive in his Summer HTH 231 course. He's caring and incredibly empathetic for slip-ups.
Professor Howley is an amazing and passionate professor. He uses great real life examples in his lectures and is very real and relatable. If you want an engaging class that will keep you interested in the material take him. The tests can be a bit specific so attending class and paying attention to the videos is important.
Genuinely has really good lectures and he really wants to get to know his students. Also such a great professor in general and not super hard, make his lectures easy to engage in and makes material more interesting than it is. Totally recommend
Dr. Howley is awesome! His lectures are very engaging and easy to understand. He also clearly cares for his students and wants them to succeed. There are only 2 exams and both are very fair and on only material covered in class.
He is such a nice professor. The assignments are very easy and graded by the TA, my TA was very nice and gave me 100 on all of my assignments. You are only allowed to miss 20% of classes or you can't get above a C. Tests are very specific.
