Awesome professor for Communications. At first, I did not want to take a public speaking course, but Dr. James make me feel at ease and less timid. He is very clear and understandable. Just make sure you know your speech and hit the alloted time, and you should be fine. Highly recommended if you are scared about public speaking.

Professor James is extremely helpful and funny (which is way useful when taking a class that requires presentations) he is easy in his grading...but you HAVE to do the work!

While he does deduct if you go over or under on your speech, he lets you look at a timer to know where you are. You have the quizzes from day one, the answers are online and you take them online, easy A. Easy, helpful, and very fair teacher.

Great professor. Took a hybrid class, so tests and assignments were due online, but speeches were given in person. He was a pretty fair grader in my opinion, and really tried to help you give good speeches. I got over my fear of public speaking, and learned how to actually give a speech in this class.

I never thought I would get an A from his class. He is extremely helpful to his students but he is very much strict with the necessity of following every single instruction in writing and reciting your speech. For those who need to take a speech class but doesn't have much public-speaking confidence, HE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

So like most people, communications was a class i dreaded before the semester began! But it is required for most majors. Anyways I really enjoyed this class! It was a little weird at first, but I gained some public speaking skills and thats for sure! I even participated in the Speeching Festival which suprisingly was kind of enjoyable.

Dr. James is a great teacher, funny and interesting. Took this class in the summer for four weeks and it was tough, got a B. I changed my major to communications because of him. This class was a ton of fun, and helped me get over my public speaking fears. You will need to do a lot of research, and you will need to make 5 speeches, but it isn't as bad as a lot of people think. One of the best professors out there.

James is a GREAT professor. I got over my speech anxiety by taking this class. He is very helpful and clear in his directions and always tries to help every student. This class should be called Research101 or something than Communication 101. I took this class in summer, and there were a lot of things to research. He is funny, and fair, but kind of inflexible, very strict in grading, and penalties. There are a lot of rules in this class, you must read the syllabus thoroughly.

He is not fair with his grading. One little mistake in your presentation, you will be deducted off points. Not an easy A.

I took his class for summer. I must say this is the greatest proffesor i've ever had at CSN! Sure his class requires a lot of research but that is bc you need to do 4 speeches which each grow and develop more as you go along. Does not embarrase you if you mess up. I liked this class because Dr.James is very fair he was really nice and humorous, also i hated doing speeches and still do but after taking this class i feel better in making speeches. Very helpful, also requires a lot of research on each speech.

Dr.James was very helpful and kept his lectures funny/interesting. I not only learned a lot about writing and giving speeches but gained valuable information regarding proper research methods. You will have to work for your grade, but he is willing to help you to be a success in his class.

This Professor is definitely one of the best and most knowledgable! He is super organized which helps u out tremendously. There were only four speeches. He guides u thru them sentence by sentence, which makes it feel as if ur just doing the research not the writing. Easy A if u can follow simple directions. I Highly recommend!!

Dr. James is a very good professor. He's clear in instructions and helps you with speeches by giving examples of outlines. He's very nice and encouraging as well. He is also helpful in trying to get people to overcome their fears. There are only 4 major speeches and a few minis. He grades pretty fair and offers extra credit. Definitely recommend!

Professor James is a very great teacher. He is orderly and direct. His lectures are very informative and helpful although not the most concise. The class was somewhat easy but it does take effort to actually get a grade above a C.

No book. He takes you step by step and really wants you to pass. Teaches you things you want to use later on in life. The speeches and outlines are tremendously easy and fun since you pick a topic you would like to do your research on. He helps, replies back to e-mails same day and within a few hours. I recommend!!

Prof. James is really nice and very helpful. He is anal about following his rues and deadlines, but they are very reasonable. He can tell the difference between nervousness and lack of effort and will not grade against nervousness. Just fallow the outlines and deadlines and you will get an A. Helps you with all speeches and is lenient if you forget to take a quiz. No textbook needed but attendance is mandatory. If you follow his rules and do everything as told, you will pass with an A.

Prof. James is very helpful professor on public communications through showing examples of what is good speaking skills and bad, experiences, and how to properly use speech outline when doing a speech. Well, the thing about him is, you have to research for a few hours and practice for a few hours for each speech or you won't get a good grade. He's really really helpful tho. Email your outline draft and you'll be replied with a feedback in a few hours or you can go bug him during his office time like I did too. Overall, he's a great professor :)

Dr James was one of the best professors I had in a long time. If anyone has to take a COM 101 class and one of your fears is public speaking I recommend taking Dr. James class. His syllabus is very direct. Make sure to do the work and come to class bc he does take attendance. Also, if no one has phones on you will all get extra points!!

The grade he gives is very very fair. The grades given are based on the student's improvements. I've become more confident and clear with speaking thanks to Professor James!

If i needed another communications class Mr. James is the man I would go to. His instructions are very simple, there's i believe 3 or 4 speeches overall, but they slowly get harder (not that hard). If you're shy he understands and is able to accommodate. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. You lose a letter grade for using cellphone too, but its a fun, easy class

Dr. James is a great professor. He has very thorough instructions on what he's looking for in each speech and gives you an outline to follow. There are 4 speeches, each one has more requirements than the last. Just do your work and you should be fine. He was kinda dorky which really lightened the atmosphere of the class and made it enjoyable.

Dr. James is an overall great teacher for COM. You definitely learn a lot in his class and he gives very clear instructions. He's funny and dorky which makes the class not so boring. I ended up with an incredible amount of extra credit, so I assume as long as you try hard, he'll help you out. Definitely helps to show up everyday for his lectures.

There were four speeches, three "mini-speeches," and a final. Be attentive in class, listen to his tips, read his feedback on your speeches, and try to improve on what he tells you to work on early on. He really cares and he does want students to succeed. Truthfully one of the best professors I've ever had. Highly recommend taking his class. I took the 8 week course, and it was a great decision. I didn't feel overloaded or pressured regardless of the class speed, and he makes you feel comfortable while also pushing you to go beyond your comfort zone. Very valuable lessons learned.

I took his 8 week course for COM101. It was pretty difficult due to course load, but that's to be expected. He made things extremely clear from the get go on how he wanted things done. This class shed a lot of new & important light on the fundamentals of communication. I thoroughly enjoyed it! The only thing I regret is not being able to take the class in-person. I took his class as an 8 week class so it was fast paced. Everything was online except lectures and speeches. The hardest part of his class was the research. The outlines he had us follow were well done and easy to follow. He has a lot of criteria for speeches which can be hard to meet at times. He gives exact study guides for every test/ quiz.

Took his 8wk class; it was great! Criteria is fast-paced, but well-organized. Had 4 major speeches; 3 of them were one speech split into sections. He provides an EXACT outline & all you need to do is delete his content & add yours. Quizzes + final are online & all have EXACT study guides to them. He works to make public-speaking less terrifying.

VERY SPECIFIC. Alot of people were frustrated with how specific Prof. James' speech instructions were but they left very little room for error if followed correctly. He grades tough but that's because he wants things done a certain way. Print out the speech recording requirements and just follow them to the T. Overall, good course.

Very easy class but what gets you is the ATTENDANCE If you are are late you have a deduction of 15 points (think of it like missing a quiz) If you are absent you get a letter grade deduction (From A, if you are absent a B) essentially only 3 absences before getting a grade of D LOCKS the doors after 5 minutes so essentially being absent

This professor is very strict about what he wants, however this is a good thing in his case. This means you know exactly what to do when making a speech. Anyway, you read a few chapters of the book, take a test, read a couple lecture slides, read the speech instructions, and prepare the outline for the speech and make the speech. Only 4 speeches.

Professor James is one of the best teachers I have ever taken online. His grading criteria and feedback were crystal clear. For online you need 9 people to present your speech in front of, he made that easier by making a forum for all his students to communicate. He's strict but honest! He really cares and wants you to pass, I would take him again!

Four speeches total, each speech connects to each other. Very simple class, one assignment do every 1-2 weeks. You just have to send a speech outline, then record the video and post it on YouTube. He has detailed step by step instructions to help.

Professor James is super particular about what he wants and how he wants it. It may seem like a lot in the beginning but I assure you he will tell you exactly what he wants from you. Total of 4 speeches but they all pertain to each other so you focus on one subject the whole time. Quiz questions are given ahead of time for an easy A.

Great professor for COM 101 online. There is only 4 units and in each unit there is an exam of 50 questions, he gives you the exam study guide for each exam. Also lectures in each unit, homework is outlines that have to be done and are easy to complete. Last but not least there is the speech videos where you have to record yourself. Easy class!

This class was so amazing. I think the professor is incredible. As long as you read the instructions you will be fine. Study guides are given and they are word for word what you will see on the test. The lectures were clear and very useful. I certainly recommend this professor for a communication credit!!

This was a great class and a great professor. He is very clear about what he is expecting & as long as you follow that you will pass. Honestly a great and easy class! There was 4 speeches which have clear grading criteria. Read the syllabus and his instructions and you will receive a good grade. There is also 4 exams which if you do the study guide are a guarantee pass. Great class overall, definitely learned some pointers when it comes to public speaking.

Professor James is a wonderful instructor. He is extremely educated in his field and conveys the information well. He gives concise instructions for each speech. You will do well if you just read all of his lectures and follow the instructions on assignments. He does use a textbook, but provides a downloadable version free to the students.

A lot of reading upfront about the very specific criteria and steps to do the speeches. But as long as you do that and follow the exact way he wants you to do everything, you should be fine.

COM101 was the very first college class I took and it was amazing! I took the six-week course online over the summer. His lectures can be a bit lengthy but they are extremely helpful. He has very specific directions for the speech outlines and how the speeches should be recorded, and if you follow all of them, you will do very well in his class!

Professor James from the beginning lets you know how the class is run, there are 4 speeches and they don't require an audience (might change in the future). He lets you know exactly how he wants the speeches and he prints out a direct outline for you to use. He grades based on the rubric and he doesn't fault you for being nervous.

If you are thinking of taking this prof., I recommend! But, do not get overwhelmed once the class starts! It may seem like you have so many things to worry about, but really the class is super straightforward. You NEED to read through all of his lectures; that is the only way you will be graded well.

Professor James is amazing. I took this class for the Fall 2024 semester and he was wonderful. Make sure you read every lecture and piece of information as it tells you exactly what to do. It was straightforward as long as you took the time to actually read. He responded to emails fairly quickly and was always respectful and actually cared.

Awesome Professor, took his COM 101 class, and it was super fun. He might seem rude with grading criteria and expectations, but as long as you CAREFULLY READ the assignment instructions, there shouldn't be any confusion or misunderstandings. With that being said, send him your outline for suggestions before turning it in. Would highly recommend.

Prof James is a fairly good professor. He is very lecture-heavy (30+ slides). READ THE LECTURES & INSTRUCTIONS, YOU WILL FAIL IF YOU DON'T. DO YOUR OUTLINE. DON'T PROCRASTINATE. You have to do 4 speeches that build on each other. He is pretty nitpicky with speeches, but very thorough. He will help you if you ask tho. P.S. U got this!

Speeches can be intimidating at first but his class made them easier. 2 assignments due per month. 4 speeches that gradually got longer and detailed but are about the same topic. READ ALL PROVIDED MATERIAL. He does not want you to fail so he provides everything he expects. Read course handouts, lectures, and speech instructions and do the outlines.

Despite the fact that at times he comes across as rude or curt and comes across like a tough pitbull, the truth is the class once you get down to the nitty gritty and you know what you're doing, the class becomes a breeze, but to note: DON'T PROCRASINATE, READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND ASK FOR HELP WHEN NEEDED do all of this and this class is an easy A.

Professor James is a good pick for a professor that will work with you. He is one of the fairest professors ever. that means you have to READ the syllabus, rubrics, and instructions VERY carefully as that could cost you a lot of points. Be wary of turning in late assignments as didn't let us do that and his deadlines were at 11:00, not midnight.

I had James for COM 101 online course. We had a total of 4 speeches, and although he was a strict grader, as long as you specifically follow all of his guidelines and the syllabus, you will receive a fair grade.
