Took Professor Jenkins' PDBIO class and it was extremely difficult. The lecture content was easy to grasp but the tests were nothing like what was talked about in lectures. His TAs consistently canceled zoom meetings and it was basically a do it on your own class. Tests were open note and I still consistently got C's and D's. He also loves his job
The class is prerecorded lectures, and then TAs will go over the recorded material on assigned class days. TA meetings were constantly canceled and rescheduled. The tests are based off of application, but you arent taught how to apply the material in the lectures or TA meetings. I spent hours outside of class time and it still wasnt enough.
Class is broken down into 6 small units. Each unit has prerecorded lectures and live break out sessions led by the TA's (optional) during class time. Each unit contains a quiz and an assignment (hw) that you can complete at your own pace before the deadline. Concepts were tricky at times, but plenty of resources available to help. Not bad!
Honestly, not sure why students have rated him poorly. Everything is open note and Dr. Jenkins/the TA's are easy to work with OUTSIDE of class time. The class is geared for students to learn the material on their own so if you want to do well, it's important to avoid procrastination.
Dr Jenkins was my favorite professor this semester. His class was very well organized and he did all he could to make himself available outside of class time. He tries to make his lectures interesting (and mildly humorous) and does a good job of explaining things well. You have to make sure you keep up with the video lectures and you'll be fine!
Took this class in Fall 2020 (COVID year), so it might be different in a normal semester. SUPER kind prof., very accessible. 6 units, each unit has 1 quiz (basically a test, but open note), and 1 assignment (pretty easy mini-project). Content is taught clearly in video lectures, and TAs use the class time to review lectures. Prof. Jenkins is great!
Dr. Jenkins was one of THE BEST professors that I had during this past semester. This course is VERY organized, with 6 open-note unit quizzes (application-based) and 6 assignments. These are easy A's if you watch the lectures, do the review Q's, and show up. He holds Q/A sessions and TA sessions to help you. 1 open note midterm & open-note final.
The teacher is a good guy and loves what he does. All of his lectures are prerecorded and are easy to understand. However the quizzes focus on applying the material learned from the videos and Jenkins nor the TAs ever teach us how to apply the material. Everything is open book/internet but it still doesnt really help.
Professor Jenkins is honestly one of my favourite professors this semester. He provided concise, prerecorded lectures of all the content you need. This is also supplemented with optional TA sessions that re-teach the material in the videos. The best part is the open book, open internet tests that are easy if you utilize the internet correctly.
He does a great job teaching this class! Very enthusiastic about the material and willing to work with students when they need help. Tests are open notes but require a higher level of comprehension for the material than just watching the lectures. If you put in a little bit of work it will be a great class!
I can't even express how much I loved Dr. Jenkin's class. He had zero busy work, very mild homework assignments, and I learned SOOO MUCH. I would recommend to anyone and everyone to take his class(es). It's easy to tell how much he cares about his students and their success, because of a genuine care he has for them as individuals.
Dr Jenkins is great! This class has a great structure and clear expectations. Watch his lectures, take notes, and meet with a study group so you can talk through concepts/processes. He really focuses on making sure material is understood, not just memorized. Probably my favorite class I've taken at BYU
Professor Jenkins is honestly one of the best professors I've had. He cares about each of his students and wants their success. His canvas is easy to navigate and he was able to change things that didn't work. All of his quizzes and tests are open book. The quizzes are application based and designed to be harder than the tests.
So grateful to Jenkins for the time/effort he put in to prep lectures. Makes complex topics simple and easy to understand! Lightbulb finally clicked for me taking this class from HIM! 6 units-HW/Quizzes for ea.+midterm+final. REALLY cares about students/helping them solidify info w/a lot of help avail ea. week. Most organized class ever. TAKE HIM!
Took it online with covid and it was a great class! It switched from blended to fully online at the beginning of the semester and the professor listened to students and adjusted the program to help us best. Not a lot of work, grading had a great system of replacing one of the first 3 quizzes with the midterm and the same with the final.
This class was great! It was super organized, 6 modules with an assignment and quiz in each, a midterm, and a final. He is super considerate of all the work that we were doing both inside and outside class and was always available to have one-on-one discussions. The final can also replace your grade! (Thats how I got an A) Take PDBIO from him!
Dr. Jenkins is a great choice for PDBio 120! He really cares about his students and his lectures were entertaining. My one "critique" is that I would've loved to hear more about the research he conducts.
I love Dr. Jenkins. The best advice I can give is to be careful with the quizzes. The quizzes are a lot harder than the actual test. He specifically does this to prepare you for the tests. However, there are only two tests: the midterm and final. He lectures everything, but I would recommend you get the textbook to supplement what he gives you.
I liked professor Jenkins, he was funny and kind! I took his class during covid and I think he did well, though it was a little hard because the material on the tests/quizzes was harder than the material taught in his online lectures. However I think that occurred because teaching online can be hard, and this was Jenkins first time. I recommend him
I highly recommend taking from Dr. Jenkins! I took his class during the pandemic and, to accommodate for the changes, he constantly tried to make the material more accessible. He was always available to meet and personally address my concerns. He's a great teacher and very invested in the success of his students. Great choice.
What saved my grade in this class (before the midterm I had a 72% in the class and I ended with a 97%) were STUDY GROUPS and Dr. Jenkins' lenient grading policy- replacing quiz scores. Honestly, after the midterm, I never attended class hours. I just watched the online lectures (about 3-4 hours worth every 2 weeks) and went to study groups.
Such a great guy! Strengthened my faith while teaching Biology. He is the quintessence of what a BYU Professor should be. You dont need a book, I loved watching his videos because HE ONLY TELLS YOU THINGS THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AND NOT THE UNNECESSARY THINGS IN THE BOOKS. Greatest Professor at BYU. Makes time for you if personal review is needed.
Professor Jenkins has been my favorite STEM professor so far. He was very accessible outside of class and was always willing to meet with students. He really wants all of His students to succeed. He teaches all of the material you need in the videos. Quizzes and exams are open notes and internet, all because he really wants you to learn. 10/10
Professor Jenkins is insanely nice, buuuut due to circumstances with classes being online this class was not a great experience for me nor the professor. There was not clear direction as to what was necessary for us to know in this class, and assignments didn't prepare us very well for the tests. It got better through the semester though!
Dr Jenkins is anxious for his students to succeed. He is very accessible for questions and tests and assignments reflect the reality that scientists can look things up too (most things are open note). His lectures are clear and interesting and his personable and caring personality is evident in them. If you will put in the work, you will succeed.
Dr. Jenkins is the best professor at BYU by far, he was always willing to meet one on one to go over quizzes and tests, and even gave you points back if you proved that you understood the concepts being taught. He even did several calculations at the end of the semester to ensure we had the best grade we could get! Change your schedule to have him!
He has been my favorite professor at BYU so far. Honestly I doubt there is a better PDBIO 120 professor. Everything is so well organized in his class it is impossible to get lost. He has projects for every unit that are really simple. The way he tests is the best possible way for anyone wanting to succeed in his course. He really cares for students
Class was well designed with six unit tests, a midterm, and a final. Lectures were short but content rich, and most of what they cover is related to the tests. All of his tests use exam-level questions that require more than a surface level understanding of biology, but he is very patient and willing to help outside of class. Great class.
I loved Dr. Jenkins! You should definitely take PDBIO from him. He's an absolutely amazing teacher and his class is structured in a way that really encourages learning. It's very evident that he cares about his students and wants them to learn. Great great teacher, would highly recommend.
This class is organized very well. I felt that the lectures did not adequately prepare students for the level of difficulty that tests required.
The class was super organized and he gives you a schedule of exactly what to do on what day, which helps a ton since this is an on-demand class. His tests are open-note, open-internet, but they test you on the application of the material, which is really good to LEARN the material. He is super caring and will do a lot to help students out. 10/10!
every two weeks there was a quiz and an assignment due. midterm replaced lowest quiz grade and my final ended up replacing my whole grade. Has great 20 minute prerecorded lectures. If you need to take PDBIO take it from him. You will learn at a super high level and it is never super stressful.
I took this class from Dr. Jenkins in my very first semester of college and was a little worried about how it would go. Honestly he is my favorite teacher so far as I go into my 4th semester. He has great lectures and youtube videos that help out a lot with learning the content from his lectures.
Dr. Jenkins is by far my favorite professor. He was so understanding, helpful and knowledgable. His tests rely on application, not just memorization, so as long as you understand the principles and can apply them you'll do great (plus they're open notes and book). This class was amazing, I loved it. Definitely recommend taking it from him!
I loved Dr. Jenkins class. He structured it in a way that was very fair and it was pretty clear how to succeed in the class. The tests and quizzes make up most of your grade and apply what you learn in class really well. I loved his class and would absolutely take a class of his again!
Honestly my favorite and least stressful class this semester. He tries to apply the material to real life and helps students to understand difficult topics. Also very fair on grading and quizzes. Amazing teacher, super fun and open. Would 10/10 recommend taking his class.
His classes are structured weirdly. Most of the material is covered online, and you go to class to understand it better. But most classes go on tangents into topics way outside the scope of the course. Tests are open- note and internet, but the questions are primarily conceptual, so knowing the material is required.
Dr. Jenkins is a very caring professor and shows the utmost respect for the students. He structures his class to be "flipped" so you watch the lecture before and then go to class to discuss. The format wasn't my favorite, but it was pretty good. The lectures are definitely boring if you didn't watch beforehand.
Jenkins is awesome. Everything you need to know is in his videos. You get to use google on every test, so if you know the material good enough to know what to google you will be able to kill it. He also lets you replace your grade on the final as your grade in the class. Probably the most organised and professor I have had at BYU.
If you took AP Bio like I did, Dr. Jenkins' class will for sure be an easy A. He records video lectures to watch on your own, and class time is used to review the material (so not the end of the world if you miss it). All quizzes and tests are online and open note/open Google, so you are really tested on understanding vs just memorization.
Class time is spent discussing video lectures where Dr. Jenkins helps us walk through problems to extend our understanding; although attendance isn't mandatory, it is super helpful. The grading is only unit tests, midterms, and 3 easy projects. Dr. Jenkins is funny and has a inspirational approach to science and biology. 10/10 would recommend!
Wasnt a huge fan of his lecture style lots of tangents and he didn't answer questions very well. I think using video lectures from covid was lazy. His tests were open note and internet which helped in keeping stress low. Most questions were pretty good and made me apply my knowledge.
Very knowledgeable and likeable guy who makes you laugh every class. However, questions in lecture did not get answered very well, and TA's were a bit disconnected from the class. The class structure is straightforward and generally stress-free. If you are confident in your ability to teach yourself, take this class
Dr. Jenkins is the best and this was my favorite class to date. The work is hard but not impossible. The class is 8 tests and 3 assignments. Don't get discouraged if you bomb the first test, A on the final A in the class. Dr. Jenkins is so nice, responds to emails at all hours, and is willing to meet outside of class. Take this from him!
Content will be MUCH easier if you have taken AP Bio and take CHEM 105 concurrently. That being said, Prof Jenkins and the TAs were very helpful. Content is definitely doable. LOVED how organized the class was. Prof Jenkins will help you get the best grade possible (quiz replacement, final can be your grade, etc.). Love the flipped class model.
Dr. Jenkins was one of my favorite professors this last semester. He really knows how to make his lectures interesting, and he makes tests open note/book/internet, which really made the learning environment less stressful. I felt like instead of being buried up to my neck in notes, I could learn freely. He's the best!
He had us watch recorded lectures and then we did the "homework" in class which I really liked. Not very much homework and we could use our notes on the tests.
I would watch his videos and make flash cards as I went. It made the class honestly so easy. Do the practice tests and go over the things to know before taking the tests and you will know everything you need. If you learn just about every detail from the videos you do not even need to go to class. Jenkins is the BEST professor I have ever had.
I absolutely loved this class. Dr. Jenkins gives great lectures and makes biology super applicable. He is very fair and the class was very manageable. He'll meet outside class and he is very interested in his students. Take CELL 120 from him, you won't regret it.
If you need to take Cell120, take it with Dr. Jenkins. His class is well-organized, and he truly gives you every opportunity to succeed. Take good notes from the videos he has made for the class, and the quizzes will be very manageable. If you come to class having watched the videos and with questions ready, you will learn and do well in the class.
This is an honest rating. There are only 3 assignments, but that means that most of the class is quiz heavy. If you do good on the midterm or final he drops the lower quizzes. You really have to know every detail from the videos, but that helped me really learn the content. The best teachers on campus for Cell Bio.
you watch videos outside of class to learn and you ask questions and talk with other people during class. different teaching style then i was used to.
BEST PROFESSOR i have yet had! You don't have homework in this class just quizzes at the end of each week. But just bc there is no hw doesn't mean you don't have to put in time and study. He was always able to work around any problems you have if you just talk to him. Great guy and funny! If you have to take cell 120 take it from Jenkins!
Professor Jenkins was one of my favorite teachers! There is a quiz each week (online) that is open book but still pretty difficult. Make sure you watch the pre-lecture videos and take good notes. There are two midterms and a long final that are all open book but if you don't know the material you won't do well (even with your notes). Take from him.
CELL 120 with Dr. Jenkins was awesome! All of his quizzes and exams were open book, note, and internet. They were pretty difficult, but with a good knowledge of the concepts, you will be able to get through them successfully. We were able to drop 2 quizzes and had extra credit opportunities. Dr. Jenkins and his TAs were always willing to meet.
Dr Jenkins is awesome. The quizzes definitely make you think and you have to know the material, but if you go to class he will make sure to answer your questions completely no matter how silly they are. You can replace your final grade with the final exam score. He also goes right along with student jokes and even adds to them.
Dr. Jenkins truly cares about his students and wants us to succeed. Everything was open note, which made me study less than I should of, so DON'T do this!! If you study even just a little you will not worry at all about this class. So fun and Dr. Jenkins is the best.
I can't say enough about how awesome Dr. Jenkins is. He's brilliant and funny, and he cares about his students and takes time to make sure everyone understands what's being taught. If someone isn't understanding a concept, he changes his approach until it clicks. Tests were open note, book, and google. Hands down the best professor I've ever had!
Prof Jenkins was super awesome and made the content make sense. All of the tests and even the final were open notes, but most of the test questions were about application rather than memorization. I love the flipped classroom teaching style so this class worked out for me, but if you don't like it then probably don't take Jenkins.
Professor Jenkins is a really good professor who wants you to do well. I'm glad I got to take this class from him!
Reversed classroom which means you watch his lecture videos before class and then review during class. All of his quizzes/midterms and the final are open note/video/google which was nice but his questions are worded so you have to understand the concepts and course material to get the questions right. Interesting way to teach but manageable.
He is a great teacher and answers questions to the material really well. He has a flipped classroom, so you learn everything outside of class in videos and come to class to discuss it. If you are ok with a flipped classroom dynamic, you will do fine.
Dr. Jenkins is the best Professor I have had at BYU! No Professor on campus wants you to do well like Tim. His tests and quizzes are all open note/open internet, but they are still pretty tough and require that you know the material really well. But he is hilarious, super kind, an awesome lecturer, and really cares. Take his class!
Professor Jenkins is awesome! Super great guy, really wants you to succeed. The flipped classroom model did not work well for me, but if it works for you then I highly recommend this class!
One of the coolest teachers on campus. The most down to earth guy there is. The reverse classroom set up was a little tough for me so I didn't like it as much. One thing that was good was the final can count as your final grade for the class. Just study hard the last few weeks and you'll pass.
Loved Jenkins. Not only was a very good professor, but a great person. Lectures weren't required but I would highly reccommend them. Format of the class were videos and then lectures were practice problems and him explaining confusing concepts. He dropped a couple of quizzes and a midterm and could use for final grade for your overall grade.
Coming up on 4 years now at BYU, I can say that Prof Jenkins is the best Bio teacher that I had and maybe the best teacher that I had. He explains concepts clearly, his class set up to help you learn and succeed, and he is genuinely a good person with a good heart. Take his classes.
Prof Jenkins is so nice and so fun. Lectures are not boring, but when it comes to class content I don't think it is great. There are quizzes at the end of every week, and despite them being open book, note, video, etc. they are still so hard. Quiz questions are complex and he doesn't do an amazing job at preparing you.
Professor Jenkins is the classic down-to-earth biology teacher. He is super funny and will genuinely answer any question you have. That being said, I never felt adequately prepared for the quizzes based on the material he gave us. There is no textbook, just videos he creates. While they were informative, they never went over the basics.
Professor Jenkins is amazing! The course felt just difficult enough to motivate me to actually learn the material without becoming a source of stress. Also, you can tell that he really wants you to succeed, and he gives really good, engaging lectures. I highly recommend taking this class from him if you can.
I loved Professor Jenkins! I'm not a stem major, so some of the material was harder for me to grasp. Some units were mad easy, 9th grade biology kinda stuff. Only assignments are weekly quizzes and exams that are online, open internet. He's super caring and wants you to succeed. I really respect the way he runs his class.
I loved Professor Jenkins's class! He relates biology to real-life examples so well that I felt I hardly had to study, not because it was easy but because he made it easy to understand. He was awesome at answering questions. Great teacher, I'd take him on any day that ends in y
I loved Professor Jenkins' class! The set up of the class worked perfectly for a student like me. I liked being able to learn the information at my own pace by watching the videos for homework and then applying the material in class. All tests and quizzes are open note and open internet, but you still need to understand the material to do well.
Dr Jenkins is really good about answering students questions and helping them to understand, and he has a strong testimony of science and religion going hand in hand. I really liked the flipped classroom model because we could come to class and have some really interesting discussions about the application of everything we learned in videos.
Dr. Jenkins is so cool. There are very few points to earn in the class, so make sure to get every point you can. Lectures were chill and Dr. Jenkins has lots of cool knowledge. Not always the most efficient lectures, but gets to everything you need or it's on Canvas. Tests are open everything--even ChatGTP. You still learn in the class though.
Even though I had Dr. Jenkins' class at 4 pm I always looked forward to it. He teaches with a flipped classroom model, meaning that he assigns 20-50 minutes worth of videos to watch before class usually, and then reviews concepts through practice problems rather than lecturing the entire time. Overall I loved this class and would take it again.
For his Cell 120 class, we watched videos on the content before class and then solidified our knowledge with lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory but will help a lot with understanding. The only things graded were weekly quizzes and tests. Both were open-note but because of that the questions were made more difficult. Highly recommend Jenkins.
Great class! He posts videos you can watch before you come to class. There is no homework, only one quiz every week on the weekends which are open note and internet. Pretty easy class. He is a great professor and great TAs!
He is a quality professor that obviously cares primarily about his students' success. His tests and exams are open everything because that is how actual science works. He loves what he teaches and does not make an intro class hard.
Loved this class! Flipped classroom model, which is great. Even if you don't prepare before you'll still leave class knowing the material. Your entire grade is based off quizzes and tests, but you can use the internet, notes etc. for all of them. Grade on Final can replace your class grade. Super funny and spiritual, brought us candy for halloween.
Prof Jenkins is awesome! he uses the reverse classroom module where you watch videos before class and then you do practice questions in class. It doesn't work for everybody but I LOVED it. He is super engaging in class and very clear on grading criteria. Highly reccommend!
I love Dr. Jenkins. He's so funny, and he teaches concepts really clearly. It's a flipped classroom, so you watch videos outside of class and go to class for clarification, but he doesn't include everything in the videos so you have to go to class. Everything is open-note, open-AI, super easy. You have 1 quiz per week, 2 midterms, and the final.
TAKE BIOLOGY from HIM! No readings. Optional supplemental videos. Graded ONLY by weekly quizzes and exams—ALL open note, internet, AI, just not other people. Good lectures, very funny. Overall you probably don't have to go to any classes if you have a basic knowledge of biology and can use chatGPT and the internet.
Professor Jenkins is amazing! Your grade is based on weekly quizzes, 2 midterms, and then the final. It sounds intimidating but it really isn't! All of it is open note, internet, even AI. No textbook, just videos. He really wants you to understand and apply biology concepts, not memorize and regurgitate things.
Honestly this was my favorite class this semester. Professor Jenkins has been one of my favorite professors at BYU. I was nervous to take this class was so good. All his tests and quizzes are open note, open book, open google, open AI. I felt like I could really learn the material because I wasn't stressed about memorizing everything
Great lectures and TAs. If you apply yourself, the material is easy to pick up.
Professor Jenkins understands that it's a 100 level class and so it's very straightforward. You don't have to attend class but I thought it was very helpful for practicing the type of problems on quizzes. Some studying/practice required but overall a light workload. Professor Jenkins is funny and the all the quizzes/exams are open note.
Prof. Jenkins was absolutely amazing! He truly cares that each of his students has a strong understanding of the material. He would take as much time needed to explain or go over any question anyone had and always made the students feel important. He is simply an amazing dude with some pretty good dad jokes in his pocket.
Timothy Jenkins is an amazing professor and a disciple scholar! He set up the class in a flipped style: you would watch a couple videos outside of class that are like a lecture, and then in class he goes over any questions and does practice problems to help you prepare for the quizzes and exams. Quizzes/exams are open note. You will love the class!
has an inverted classroom model, open internet and everything tests and quizzes and final, easy but didn't feel like I learned a lot, tho I also never watched the videos he made so that's probably on me
Class is flipped (watch lectures at home review in class) and some love it but I hated it. Tons of the content in the video lectures didn't seem relevant at all. He allows use of notes and internet on all tests which is great for getting an A, but not for actually understanding the content if you're taking the course as a prerequisite.
All quizzes and tests are open note and internet, just be sure to submit them on time!
Tim is a great guy. His quizzes and tests are open note, open AI, open google, but because of the way he writes them, you do need to be familiar with the material to get an A. Your grade on the final replaces your grade in the class so there's plenty of room for mistakes. Low workload, easy to succeed. I'd highly recommend Tim!
He is a wonderful teacher and person. Highly recommend taking from him!!!
This man is one of the few BYU legends. I took his class a long time ago, but have consistently thought back to him as one of the only professors who actually understood and did things in a reasonable way. He actually gets it, and is just a good dude. I would highly recommend his class.
There is no proctoring on quizzes or exams, so if you get tempted to cheat and have a heavy guilt complex, this class isn't for you. If you watch the videos and take good notes, you don't need to go to class. I liked going because he would review test and quiz questions. You can take quizzes and tests online, so this class can be done remotely.
Professor Jenkins is a great teacher. There is no homework, just watching prerecorded lectures on YouTube and taking a weekly quiz. Every assignment, whether a weekly quiz or your final, is open note, lecture, and to a custom AI that he built for the class. Your grade is entirely dependent on quizzes and tests, but it is a low stress class.
Professor Jenkins is spectacular. I honestly wish I could have him teach every class. Before every class period, there is a 30 minute videos to watch. Class is spent applying what you learned into real world applications. Grades are based entirely on quizzes, but they are easy. Honestly learned the material better and easier than other professors.
Professor Jenkins made learning Biology in Cell 120 so fun! I came from high school biology and I was not a huge fan, but Professor Jenkins helped me learn to love the learning process. All of his quizzes and tests are open note. There is no homework, only watching videos and taking notes. A very easy class if you apply yourself.
If you want CELL 120 to be easy, take professor Jenkins. He is very caring and wants everyone to succeed and does a good job explaining the material. It is a flipped classroom so there is really no homework other than watching videos and all the tests are online and open note. I recommend taking this class.
He creates all of the course content to be exactly what we need. He wrote all the readings, made the videos, etc. His lectures are great. Sometimes he struggles to make the lectures easy to understand but overall, he's a really good teacher. The only thing on your grade is quizzes and tests though.
Professor Jenkins runs an exceptionally well-designed course. Content is learned at home through videos, while class time is used for practice and clarification. Grading is limited to weekly online quizzes and tests--no testing center required. Simple, efficient, and thoughtfully structured (especially if you are taking chem at the same time).
