very poor instructor
If you come from a pure science background then maybe the writing is a little difficult. Very stimulating and open, yet he does make quite explicit what is important. The perhaps better as an intense summer course than spread once a week during the regular year.
If you look up the word boring in a dictionary then Juckes would be an example of it. Man, this class was useless.
Great Prof
Although Juckes seems intimidating at first, face-to-face he is kind considerate and helpful...pretty writing intensive compared to other neuroscience type psych courses...good prof overall.
Ok where do I start? LOL ...seriously of all the profs I've ever had at this school I must say Dr. Juckes is one of the smartest if not THE smartest man I've ever met. He presents his information well and knows what he's talking about. The only thing I didn't like was how he insists on the bell curve for his marking scheme. As though a certain numb
Wonderful, wonderful professor. He's clear, thorough, and an extremely tough marker. He could've made more use of the textbook because I never opened it, but I understand he's probably required to use it.
I found Prof. Juckes very clear, direct and thorough (perhaps the latter was what made some people find him boring? I thought it was refreshing to have someone who really knows what he's talking about). No ambiguities here- if you do the work he sets out, you'll get an A. It IS a lot of work, but he eases the pain with some quietly cheeky humour.
Great prof. Easy to listen to. Cracks some jokes every now and then. Tough course though. Papers are graded really hard.
Great Prof! He's extremely helpful, not to mention keeps the class's interest with very stimulating discussions. And I certainly don't understand the "boring" comments, because he is always able to maintain the students' interest and can crack up some hilarious jokes! Take his classes if you can!
Dr. Juckes intelligent and sarcastic, and has a taste for witty repartee. His classes are hard, but I don't know a prof in the department who is more committed to teaching. He is completely facetious, and can even be a real ass, but he's a touchingly kind person underneath. Mind, though, he seems *biased* against those with bad grammar/writing.
Dr Juckes is my favourite prof - take all his classes! He has shown his commitment to undergraduates in science by spearheading an undergraduate journal, an exciting project called JUST @ Dal. Check it out! www.just.science.dal.ca
This is an excellent class for the category A requirement. It is a hard writing class, but it sure beats those deadly-boring neuro classes. It wasn't easy, but as always Dr. Juckes was extraordinarily helpful and always took questions. He's a reliably good prof -- which is hard to find -- so I always take his classes.
Perfectly happy w/ Dr. Juckes as my supervisor for the independent research project. I have heard many people complain to me that their supervisors have no time, are unavailable, or don't seem to care, so I am grateful to have had the opposite experience. On the downside, he makes me get up obscenely early, but meetings are fun, so I don't mind.
I find class not that interesting, but he is a very good teach and a very hard marker. He expects a lot, but you learn to pay attention to detail so much more after taking this class. He is so organized and on the ball with answering your emails and questions.Take this class if you plan on going on in science becasue it will be useful in the future.
I think he has a love for trying to fail students. Smart man but very unapproachable and he usually has a very low class average. His courses would be easier if he didn't make you feel like everyone question you asked were a stupid one.
This prof. is great. One of the few, perhaps only, professor at Dal to truly care about a students ability to write. If you want to learn how to keep your writing clear and concise take one of his classes. Also, his conversations are stimulating as is the course pack he will frequently put together with recent information.
Very tough, intelligent, knowledgeable, and helpful prof. Take his classes if you want to learn how to think critically. He seems intimidating (he'll call you on any BS), but if you speak to him in person he is very kind and will go out of his way for you.
Juckes is a very good prof. He makes all his classes interesting. You will not get marks you are use to in this class but when you get a good mark you actually feel like you earn every point. This class is very rewarding. I really respect Juckes as a prof.
BE WARNED! He is a extremely difficult marker!!!!! The most difficult and intensive class I have ever taken, and I am a Physics Honours student. Genuinely nice, however the assignments are painful and the marking feels like you've been slapped in the face.
Tough class, but if you but time and effort into it you'll be glad you did! Two years later and I don't know what I would've done if Juckes had been an easy marker. He knows what he wants from his students and won't settle for less. Seems intimidating, but he is a nice man. Make sure you study a lot for the final!
A lot of people hate on him because of the difficulty of the class - I made a great mark in the class, and still do not like the man. He calls students out who leave class (which I find rude and uncalled for, it's our problem if we need to leave)...He thinks quite highly of himself. Not a fan.
Class is tough, especially the marking, but if you put in the time you can get good marks. Juckes is pretty funny, and very helpful when it comes to completing the assignments properly. I enjoyed the class
Tough marking, but if you spend the time on the assignments he'll reward you with the grade. Don't leave anything to the last minute, the assignments are too intricate.
DIFFICULT class, interesting material, awesome prof. He'll expect you to understand every detail mentioned in class - take lots of notes & do the readings! Tests are hard, but fair in marking. He'll go out of his way to clarify issues with the class, and genuinely cares about his students' concerns. Smart man, with a tendency to crack dry jokes :)
One of the worst profs I have ever had. Not accommodating in the least for illness (even with a note!), no course material AT ALL. No text, no supplementary readings, no posted class slides. First prof I have ever had who legitimately does not want his students to do well.
In class, he's very funny and easy to understand. He becomes very brutal though on the "quizzes" which are the size of exams with the same time as quizzes. He does not help much and he does not have a textbook or post his notes online. He also expects word-for-word from the readings. Very terrible mark wise, but good at helping you to understand.
I would strongly recommend that no one takes a class with this professor. Yes he is funny at times and the is intelligent, however he GRADES VERY UNFAIRLY. If you want to maintain or improve your GPA do not take his class. Many students in my class complained about his grading methods that were extremely troubling.
Worst Professor I have ever had the misfortune of having at Dalhousie University. For someone like myself who is concerned with keeping a high GPA in order to be accepted into Grad School, he is a student's worst nightmare. Grades aside, he completely ruined my growing interest and zest for the field of Psychology.
I loved Dr. Juckes! He's a very hard marker, but the class was interesting and worth the effort. He's a very sarcastic, blunt prof, so if that's not your thing skip his classes. I personally loved his teaching style, highly recommend him!
Dr. Juckes is a great professor when it comes to making sure you know the material. You have to work hard in this class, the marking style of the assignments is really weird. He doesn't mark them but he designed the marking style and it's unfair. I'll thank myself later for taking this class first year, though.
This class gets a bad rep, but it was my favorite and most helpful class. always go to class, especially around break, he likes to have bonus quizzes. As long as you put time and effort in, you should do well in the course. He is a great guy and always available if you have a problem. all 1st year science students should take this
Probably the rudest professor ever. Don't even bother going to his office hours. He is so unwilling to help. Oh and don't DARE get sick on the day of a test. He will NOT believe you and will give you hell for it. I don't understand how someone like him could even be a professor. Definitely one of the most arrogant and rude people I've ever met.
He enjoys making things difficult, unrealistic with his expectations. There are 4 quizzes that should be considered midterms, that he doesn't give you enough time for and he puts irrelevant questions on them. Fill in the blank sections were the worst. Overall, he is rude and unapproachable.
Dr. Juckes is a VERY hard professor to succeed with. After a test with a class average of 52%, he chose to blame our study strategies, rather than the fact that he asked us how to RIDE AN OSTRICH on the test. Furthermore, he doesn't post lectures, deletes his announcements, and then just takes passages out the textbook for slides. Not impressed.
Pretty arrogant, tests are harder than he makes them out to be. Once you get past the first or second "pop quiz" you'll be fine 'cause you know what to expect. He usually warns you about pop quizzes so just make sure you go to class and you'll be fine. I will say this class whipped me in to shape for sure
On top of being unrealistically hard, this class was useless to me. The writing practices learned in this class are non-essential to science students, and will not make science writing better. Tests were too long for the time allotted and assignment grading was way too harsh to succeed. This class will be an unrelenting struggle and waste of time.
Overall confusing, not helpful and brutal grader. It was stressful getting any/all assignments back as you never knew what mark you would get, although they were consistently low
The worst. Wouldn't even accept a doctors note for the day I was sick for the group presentation. I had to show him emails demonstrating my organizing of my group. By the way 2/6 people in my group did not speak English... Thus the group project was even harder.
really hard to score marks, have to work hard to pass.
Most difficult prof I have met! Don't take his class unless you wanna plunge your GPA into the depths of Hellfire.
I had Juckes for tutorial as well. He is very picky, but if you show that you are willing to work it will pay off tremendously.
Don't underestimate his class. You definitely have to make this class a priority; however, the markers give great feedback and you will notice a huge improvement in your writing by the end. He's tough but you appreciate it in the end.
Hated it at first. He was my tutorial mentor and if you get passed the point of complaining about the class and buckle down and work you can do exceptionally well. I hope it all comes in handy in the coming years. Deep down Juckes is a good guy, you just have to earn his respect.
Funny guy. Loves his Donald Trump jokes. This class is VERY format heavy. If you don't get your formatting properly done by Assignment 2, you're in trouble. Had a tough time adjusting to this class as a first year student. Assignments often had confusing elements, although Professor Juckes usually answered fast enough on Brightspace discussion.
Dr. Juckes is hilarious in a sarcastic way and he is a good "baby" sitter. The grading criteria are fair enough considering that about 25 percent of students in class got an A-level grade on average. We had assignments every week and it took me 5-10 hours per week on assignment (I am a first-year ESL student). No group work this semester.
Dr. Juckes is one of the worst professors I have ever had. I used to enjoy psychology until he taught my class. All he does in lectures is read quotes from readings and expect us to understand what he means. Tests are marked unfairly. He is rude when you go to his office hours, and tells students to just drop the course if they have a low mark.
Incredibly rude to students. Who thinks that they are so amazing they need to copyright their poorly written notes? His quiz tested for some material not even discussed in lecture! On that note, he couldn't even finish his lectures because he likes to hear his own voice so much and he had to make a supplementary video.
BEWARE! Should not be an intro course ( used to be 4th year honours cours). When the class average is consistanly low through the whole semester he will blame the class for not understanding. Rigid, unforgiving marking scheme. Does not ever agree with you over marking inconsistancies between TAs. Is not in touch with information technology.
If you are an A student, show up to every class, go to every tutorial, attend the supplementary class, ask questions and use the feedback from your assignments, you still will not do well. Risking your GPA is not worth attempting this class. His teaching methods are discouraging and his marking is unrealistic. Assignment expectations unclear.
He knows a lot, and is very aware of that. He is very full of himself, and believes that this class is the most important class you are taking. There are hard assignments every week, and if you're even a minute late handing it in he will take off 10%. I would recommend if you are taking this class for the writing credit, just take English instead.
If youre taking this to satisfy the writing requirement, just take something else. What you learn you'll eventually discover in other classes, without an expectation you have writing skills of an honours student in their fourth year. Not designed for first year students. Unrealistic expectations and no negotiations for marks.
Dr. Juckes taught one unit in this course, and I found it to be the most straight forward unit. No trick questions and he gives very interesting lectures.
This class is designed for people who are expert writers and are looking to achieve perfection and seek validation from an arrogant know-it-all. I would not recommend this course if you struggle with writing or are looking to improve your writing skills. Feedback is seldom constructive, and not always consistent.
I went to the three review lectures, used the 60 pages worth of exam practice questions, and the 120 practice quiz questions. Went over my old quizzes and assignments, but i still think i bombed that exam. If I dont take the credit im taking history next year. Regardless of the credit I will not take any other class by him again.
Terrible professor. He has the most questionable testing methods ive ever seen. And don't bother going to his office hours, he is extremely arrogant and rude and will just talk down on you the whole time. Do your self a favour and do not take a class from this prof.
He is way too arrogant for his level of intelligence. Very unintelligent professor who often cannot answer his students questions. Terrible grader too.
Just an absolutely awful professor. All of the below comments about his arrogance is spot on. I will disagree with the comments that he is knowledgeable though as he is actually the opposite at least in this class. Avoid at all costs. You have been warned.
Embodies all the worst qualities you would expect from a cartoonish villain professor. Poor class average, pop quizzes, confusing and poorly articulated feedback, strict marking scheme, strict late penalties, no mercy, and I didn't learn anything I couldn't have seen on a 60 minute YouTube video on APA format and Scientific Style.
Most people only take this course to satisfy their Faculty of Science writing credit. If that is the only reason you are going to take this course, then don't do it. The grading criteria is the hardest I've encountered and the class averages are the worst that I've seen. By October, my only goal became just to pass the course.
I am a second-year Psychology now and I thank myself for taking this class during my first year. If you are a science student aiming for an honour degree, do consider to take this class and be sure to work really hard for it.
He is rude
Rude, and unreasonable. No matter how hard you work or how much energy you put into an assignment, your grade will never reflect your effort. By half-way through the course, I was struggling to pass.
What you need to do to pass the course is just READ PAPERS and REMEMBER THEM.
Lecture slides were extremely unclear especially after taking a quiz followed by it. Most of the materials are not specific enough to apply on quizzes what more of midterms. Materials found on recent quiz was not even found on the slides.
Interesting that he copyrighted public knowledge, though just showing the symbol certainly doesn't mean it's actually copyrighted. Regardless, I thought he was a solid prof. Interesting lectures, although vague, and it's obvious he's a smart guy. Of course, I only had him for three classes and one quiz, worth 0.75% of my total grade.
Terrible. Very wordy lectures.
Just take something else to satisfy the writing credit.
This class is challenging and you have to be willing to put the time in to get a good grade. SCIE1111 significantly improved my writing skills. Make sure you buy Hofmann as you really do need it (he makes test questions based on certain chapters). Dr. Juckes may seem rude and scary in the beginning, but by the end of the course, I really liked him.
Rude, condescending, and poor lecturer.
Seemingly arbitrary information a lot of the time
Hes rude and unaccomodating.
A crazy amount of work. He has little regard for your other courses. To do well in this class other grades will suffer as you will have to sacrifice time that should be allocated for other classes to complete your weekly assignments. The grading structure is also poor with different people marking you for every assessment.
Put simply, this class is a lot of work with little to no reward. Each assignment takes the allotted week to complete. Juckes has little to no regard for other courses, they suffer as a result. He moves quickly through slides that are vague at best, and they are generally unhelpful for the assignments.
hardest course i ever took your other classes will suffer from this class during my semseter 60% of students failed the class.
By far, he is the worst teacher I've ever had. Avoid this course if you can; otherwise, you will suffer mentally and physically, and your Grades will plummet. If you have to choose this course, please read the following low-rate comments and think twice. If you want to learn APA format, reading an APA book from DAL library is sufficient.
Course material isn't that bad, just a lot of hard work and pretty boring. Only way to get through it is to be organized. Tests are a literal sh*t show, you're never given enough time. Dr. Juckes is also kind of a jerk and called my friend a twit to her face. If you take his class, good luck and tell him his gold earring is gross from me.
Very condescending which causes for less participation from students, and is often a confusing lecturer. Extremely hard marker; in order to receive a suffice grade you must know the material far more in depth than most professors would expect you too, and than what seems necessary. Makes things seem much harder or confusing than they have to be.
He's insufferable but I don't regret taking this as my writing credit. You get to take 1 course instead of 2 and it's scientific writing, so if you don't like classic english essays it's good. READ THE TEXTBOOK! All the answers are there. Also, the TA's are a great resource so be engaged in tutorial. Just get through it and leave it in the past.
Grading criteria is very unclear, and he really makes you feel like he's out to get you. For example, how does one receive a NEGATIVE grade on an assignment? Not for things like plagiarism, he just decided that instead of zero being the lowest mark and the worst you can get that it's below that. Every assignment mark has a class average around 60%.
I wish Juckes would take accountability when the average for every assignment is consistently in the 60's. Juckes expects students to know more than what is in the lectures/textbook and when they don't they get docked points. I feel like I'm spending most of my time on SCIE1111 with very little reward (in terms of grades & knowledge).
Do not make the same mistake as I did. Worst prof. Please read the comments about this professor. I'm a hardworking and dedicated student and struggled to even pass this course. You study numerous lengthy articles for exams and had to memorize them. Final course average was barely a pass, do not take this course otherwise your grades will plummet
Do not make the same mistake I did. Please read the comments about this professor. One of the worst profs I've had. Numerous lengthy articles to study and actually memorize for exams. I'm hardworking and dedicated and struggled to pass this course. When the final course average is barely a pass, you know there is a problem. Do not take this course.
I am not sure why everyone does not like this class. Maybe it's because it was online but the content was straight forward and the marking was rough but not too horrible. Dr. Juckes is also very funny and I really enjoyed the class. The key is asking your TA plenty questions!
This man is completely irresponsible with his course load and grading. Do not take this course if you don't need to. The worst professor I have ever come across.
This is by far the worst class I've taken and the worst prof I've ever had. The first assignment I handed in got me an 8 % because the instructions were incredibly vague. We talked about it and he was very condescending. The TAs that mark assignments are also rude and don't offer any real help, only criticism. Marks do NOT reflect effort.
For a class based on objectivity, it was the opposite. Marking was subjective so you never knew what to expect, as the TA that gave you advice wasn't always the one to mark it. He acts like he gets off on failing grades and doesn't seem to understand that consistent bad marks are a result of his poor teaching. Just save yourself the headache.
Slides are unhelpful, vague, and not precise. The tutorial exercises are a waste of time. Professor is condescending, unprofessional, and unresponsible. Feedbacks will be inconsistent throughout the term as you will be marked by different TAs every week. Marks do not reflect effort. Avoid this class/Drop it/Take it to write this kind of comn
Incredibly condescending. Seems like he makes up his marking rules as he goes. Barely gives anyone marks above 90's... like really, almsot no-one. Reading his comments on my papers makes me want to shrivel up and stop existing :)
Juckes is a really tough marker and admits that he is difficult to impress. I really enjoyed the material and his lectures aren't too bad, but the grades I've received have been pretty unfair. His instructions for assignments are SO VAGUE and his marking is so severe. I've put lots of effort into this class but sadly my grades don't reflect that :/
Do not take his class. Absolutely brutal. Terrible feedback, not looking for you to succeed. Does not give extentions and scoffs at the question then holds it against you. Genuinely does not care if you pass or fail.
Was a very tough class. The grading was crazyyyy
This is the worst class I have ever taken. The TA's mark how they feel, it is not based on a rubric. I hated my life. It made me do bad in my other class because I spent so much time in this class. Take any class other than SCIE 1111.
Juckes is way too heat with his marking. It is literally impossible to get a good grade no matter what you do. Even if you answer with information directly from his lectures he will probably mark it incorrect. If you want a good GPA i would avoid this class.
Listennnnnn I've always received really good feedback on my writing, even know in upper year sciences my papers have never gotten lower than an 85%. I never managed above 60 in this class. It's also not advertised as what it is: made for psych students. Literally not helpful if you're in any other science, as he teaches APA citation style not CSE
The prof is awful,no extension for test even for emergencies. I had important issues to solve as an international student as it was about impact my education. The usual Monday classes changed to Tuesday, when asked for extension on test he refused and interrogated me why I didn't know about the test dates even after clearly stating it was emergency
Dr. Juckes is one of the most fantastic prof I've ever met at Dal. He is gentle, patient, and caring for students whenever they have questions. The course arrangement is super fun and students can definitely learn a lot. Tests and assignments are easy to complete for 1st year students. Attendance is necessary for tutorials.
My teaching assistant was very helpful during tutorials as he knew how hard the class was. Papers and tests marked very hard and rubrics were unclear. During the strike no accommodations were made and assignments and tests were still continued with while receiving no feedback. Slides are not posted online.
He probably taught me more skills than all other profs. The course is tough, but it is very rewarding, and since the class size is so small, everyone can really get to know each other.
I took this class for my writing credit but I withdrew because the class and the teacher are very difficult for no reason. He makes you buy a 40 textbook which he basically reads from in the lecture slides. The tutorial assignments and regular assignments grading is all over the place and does not stick to one scheme. The test is really short too.
no content was posted online, if you missed the lecture you miss the work and announcements. not enough time given in tests and marking was way to harsh. workload is insane. would not take again.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. He is rude and mean when you look for feedback. He is just a hard grader and offers no support or explanation. Never take his class, EVER!!!!!!
By far the hardest and most difficult class I have ever taken. Extreme work load with insufficient feedback, consistently insults his students, and marks extremely unfairly. Most people in the class have gone down whole letter grades in this first year science class compared to their second or third year science courses. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
Learned an absolute ton about writing because I believe his teaching style is effective. Assignments and tests were marked hard. He made everyone in class very aware of his high expectations and the students that didn't take that seriously got dumped on. Life isn't just participation trophies and that is the most valuable lesson here.
This course is not worth it. No textbook, but loads, and I mean loads of articles to read (some reaching 25-30 pages). Lectures are not recorded. The professor also speaks in a rather condescending tone. Exam questions are direct quotes and very obscure. There is even an oral exam, which is direct memory of articles. Avoid this class.
Very big assignments that have to be formatted PERFECTLY
He is very condescending and doesn't help students understand material. Assignments have to be formatted PERFECTLY to receive a passing grade, do not take this class
RUN!!!! PLEASE this class is TERRIBLE he will try his best to fail you. this class is not worth it. Don't take it. you will regret it. YOU ARE NOT THE EXCEPTION
Terrible guy, class is needlessly difficult, cares more about the format of your work than the actual content. Never take this class, there is far too much work and it will most likely lower your GPA.
I can never be more clear, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you don't want your GPA to go down a few letter grades than please avoid this class by all means neccesary.
This is the most condescending professor I have ever encountered. He gets off on failing students and trying to appear smarter than everyone else. Do not take this class. The grading is inconsistent and unfair and he reads from the textbook the whole class. The tutorials are useless and I regret taking this class.
Great guy, loved seeing him connect with students through his passion of cycling. Very excellent classes, and great personality. Assignments are very easy to do if you make sure to plan ahead and not leave them till the last minute. Excellent man.
This man has killed the light inside of me. RUN RUN RUN! I worked really hard and did not feel as if I got a grade that reflected the amount of work I put in.
This class sucked. I did learn but was not worth the 4 nights a week of homework.
SCIE1111 is hard. It can be annoying when you receive an A on a tutorial assignment and then submit the identical content to receive a D on your final assignment since he rotates TAs. However, he drops your lowest test and assignment grade. If you have a strong background in writing or Psychology this course may be for you if not... good luck.
More communications than writing for sciences, but all the more crucial for STEM, imo. I took this in 2nd year and was shocked by the difficulty, but it made a tremendous difference in my quality of work going forward. He's an incredible teacher IF you take your schooling seriously. Don't justify your mockery (Tour de France) because its hard.
The worst. Unclear, rude, creates excessive stress. Not a single thing is available to you outside the lecture, he doesn't believe in the internet. Sketchy too, you can only buy the mandatory textbook directly from him in his office with cash only meaning, this book is not approved by the University.
Difficult marker & the tests had very specific information on them. He does not specify what he is looking for with assignments & the class averages for them were very low. He does not make his content accessible online, & does not record lectures. Avoid taking this course with him if you can.
Been in this course for 2 months now and I'm considering dropping it. He is the worst teacher I've ever had. Our first test is on 5 different units. we have 80 mins for 20 multi choice, a cross word puzzle (no word bank) and fill in the blank (multi choice) and 2 "short" answers. The questions are crazy specific and impossible to remember. AVOID!
This professor is the rudest, and unclear, and creates stress that is not needed. He gives very unclear assignment guidelines and picks them apart when you pass them in. The tests have so much information on them with only 80 minutes to complete. Class averages are very low. Do not take this course. There are so many better course options.
Listen to the others. I actually get anxiety when I step into class. The reading is insane and you need to know specific details (upwards 20+ reading per test). The class average is very low and there is not enough time to do the exams. There is no textbook which is nice but it in my opinion isn't worth the stress.
If you are tough and open to criticism, you can succeed in this class. Throughout the term you may find that this class is awful, and you don't want to go, which is completely understandable. The prof is tuff and acts accordingly; however, when you get to the end of the class, it will all click and your understanding will all come together.
He is a crazy hard marker and does not care if the entire class fails. Tests are ridiculously hard, and papers have little to no instructions but then get ripped apart during grading. After tests, he will read the averages of each section out to the class and seems proud when announcing certain sections had a 20% average. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I handed my paper in 3 days late and he took 50% off. I do acknowledge it was my fault for not emailing him ahead of time asking for an extension, but it was a harsh penalty. Can be entertaining in lectures. Found tests to be fair except for Test 2 where he tested us on portraits of the researches (like ???). Very tough grading on papers.
Awful. Don't waste your time. Rubrics unclear, marks docked for unspecified details, very nitpicky. Marking incredibly inconsistent. Textbook was written by prof, had a ton of spelling/grammar errors, and was very biased. Lectures weren't posted online, and he was incredibly rude and unhelpful in office hours. Ableist/transphobic/sexist undertones.
Makes you buy a horrible textbook filled with spelling errors. Unclear instructions in textbook which leads to marks being docked due to lack of clarity. Refuses to use brightspace and assignments must be printed and handed in in-person. Condescending and rude tone towards students. Tests can have examples brought up in class but not in textbook.
I wrote over 2,000 words to describe how much I hated this class, but the word limit prevents me from saying all that was wrong. Let me say this: AVOID. AT. ALL. COSTS. He is a sardonic person with unclear desires in terms of assignments and a unenjoyable attitude that made my entire academic term worse just by being in it. Never again. Never.
AVOID/DROP THE CLASS = MENTAL HEALTH + ENJOYABLE TERM. TAKING THE CLASS = GIVE YOURSELF HARD TIME + POSSIBLE MENTAL DISORDER
This class can be a real struggle, but with persistence and using tools like Unstuck AI, you can make it through. The prof is tough, but the material clicks eventually.
He is a cutie pattotie sweetheart of a person, but an insanely harsh grader. He gets all his TA's to grade our stuff and then regrades them all regardless. Don't go to him with issues with your grade without talking to your TA first unless you want it lowered. Tutorials are mandatory.
He is a very harsh professor, though he teaches well. His people skills are the worst. I would recommend not taking this class.
WOW, I just want to say WOW. Definitely one of a kind.
His class literally traumatized me from the grades i would receive on my papers, i literally lost all confidence in my writing because of how critical he marked. I just received a 85% on a second year genetics paper that i assure you he would have given me a 40% on. absolutely horrible class AVOID AT ALL COSTS just take english instead!!! mistake!!
This professor hates technology he will not post anything online, everything will be in person in class. He makes you buy his book from him with cash in his office because the bookstore won't sell it. If you need this class for a writing requirement take a different one, this professor cares more about formatting then correct work.
The course was quite tough. We didn't write much about science and rather wrote about bikes/cycling in scientific style. The course was all in person, almost nothing was posted on brightspace, and all assignments had to be handed in at the beginning of class on paper. Not all content was in the textbook and you had to buy it from the prof with cash
Juckes is renowned for his hard courses and tough nature. I found the he was very funny and entertaining in the lectures. But his tests are hard and he grades very harshly. The final exam is worth 40% of the grade. Be aware before you take this class that it takes a lot of work and dedication, and I suggest going to see Juckes regarding papers.
This class actually almost killed me if ur thinking about taking this for a writing requirement, DONT! I'm literally trying to save ur mental health just take english instead its ten times easier & you won't want to rip your hair out by the end of it. All he talks about is bikes, he gives a million pop quizzes, horrible grader, & tests r horrible.
I initially read all these complaints thinking it wouldn't be that bad, but I can confirm, unfortunately after only half a sem, he is a very difficult professor. Hard beacuse I love the content but exams are super-specific and he grades VERY HARSH. Class average was 46% and he presented that before giving back marks, almost proudly. Prepare to work
Either you hate this course or you love it, me personally i follow the latter.
Please save yourselves. This guy is the worst prof at Dal, he's incredibly rude and if you try to reason with him about grading you will be shut down immediately. You're graded off of 5 tests. Lowest mark gets dropped, but if you miss one he'll include the 0 and drop the next lowest (crazy) He takes off marks for grammar and sentence structure too
Majority of this class I have tried really hard to ignore these reviews and give him the benefit of the doubt. He cares about our learning, but his grading is like insane. Half the class is currently failing and it has been like this for most of the semester. He is willing to help outside of class but ultimately just a very strict grader
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE THIS CLASS! It's not worth it, your grade will drop, he will make you feel incompetent. He is rather rude, does NOT post anything online. If you email asking what you missed in class he will say it is your problem to deal with and ask someone else in class. He does not care about the students at all.
So far, this has been the WORST uni class I've ever taken. You may think you know the assigned papers well, or did good on a test until you get the mark back and he's PROUD that half the class failed…. Don't take this if you want your mental health to remain intact. It's been the most discouraging class for the amount of work put in.
Everyday I would drive to class I would hope to crash so that I don't have to attend his lectures and tests. Do not take this course whatsoever it's just not worth it. The course focuses more on memorizing info from papers rather applying or proving the information you learn. He grades as if giving you marks takes money straight out of his bank.
As someone who slacked off a bit (60s and 70s on tests/papers), and still got an A, Dr Juckes is NOT a bad professor. The people saying he is horrible are salty over bad grades. He gives you many opportunities to make up for bad marks, and his tests are NOT hard. If you arent lazy, you will 100% learn and improve your writing and you will get A's.
Tim is the least understanding prof I have ever dealt with in university. He claims that attendance isn't mandatory but will use it as a weapon against you if you appeal anything, his lectures are summaries of the readings assigned each week, and his grading system is set up to make you fail if you miss an evaluation. STAY AWAY!!! Worst class ever.
He told me to use more detail in the sentence questions. When wrote more detailed he gave me multiple 0s. After asking him he confirmed that the content was correct but he gave me 0s for writing more than 1 sentence. That pretty much sums him up
I thought Tim was a great teacher and very engaging. His course was difficult but he set clear expectations and if you kept up with the work, it was reflected in your grade.
I went into this course expecting a tough professor but severely underestimated this guy. Instructions for what he wants written are unclear and marks as if having a passing class would get him fired (average before exam 42%). He hardly posts anything online, is extremely condescending and is impossible to please. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS COURSES!!
I can appreciate that he wants his students to make it their responsibility to put in the work BUT his grading system is the worst thing ever! I study hard and still fail (which I honestly think he wants at this point). The only reason I didn't give him a 1 is because he sometimes makes me laugh, has a cool earring and his accent is entertaining.
If you are considering taking this class to fulfill your writing credit, don't. Dr.Juckes is an awful human, he will drain your happiness. Everything is about bikes instead of science. No time is given for tests. You are forced to buy his textbook, filled with errors and contradictions. Your work is never good enough and you will feel discouraged.
I started this course with the same attitudes as everyone leaving ratings, but after I figured him out (lots of stress, meetings and pushing to advocate), I can say Tim is a great prof. If you're not good with working hard, don't take this class If you can appreciate a challenge, take it lazy people dont like this class so be honest w urself
Juckes has very high expectations and looks down upon students that do not achieve them
He is flippy floppy with his temper, something may have him raise his voice at a student in front of the class and other days he "loves" the class. One group project with barely any instructions on how to do. Be prepared to buy a mandatory textbook that contains the assignment instructions. No brightspace. Loves bikes. Do not take if not needed!!!!
He cares about his students and wants to see them taking initiative and responsibility for their learning. if he sees this effort it'll reflect in your grades. He wants you to leave each lecture having learnt something and doesn't care if some people may dislike him for this. you'll do well if you book appointments and engage in class.
I took this class first semester of my first year. He didn't post anything online, if you missed a class good luck catching up. He grades tough but his expectations are clear. I appreciate that this class helped give me a good foundation which made the rest of my classes easier. I would recommend the class but not the prof. Be ready to put in work!
He cares about students that shows initiative
By far my hardest class in medical science, do not take lightly. Well respected teacher, tests are exactly like exercises. Hard grader, be prepared to be humbled
Dr. Tim Juckes does not care for his students success. He is not only a tough grader but is also extremely inadequate at providing effective feedback. There is no winning with him. You may come back to him with the same paper time and time again, and still it will never be what he wants.
Despite all the poor reviews Dr. Juckes is a very personable bike loving, cellphone hating chap. He has a tough shell and can seem tough but it open to private meetings to discuss issues you may have. If you read all of the content he gives, you will succeed in the tests!
Dr. Juckes is certainly very knowledgeable, but he expects a great deal from his students and is a very harsh grader, and his expectations aren't always clear. When it comes to SCIE 1111 specifically, it's a lot of work but it provides useful skills and knowledge, but don't skip class unless you want to fail, even if attendance isn't mandatory!!
