He's a pretty good teacher. Just make sure you write rough drafts for his essays so he can let you know how to fix it to make it better.
Good teacher, but makes you actually have to learn grammar.
Even though he's real cute, his research papers are real tough (to me). But as long as u hand in your rough drafts you get a better understanding!
ok teacher i guess. he didnt teech meee good english thow. one flaw he has is that he loves the sound of his own voice and how intelligent he is. I GET IT,YOUR SMARTER THAN A BUNCH OF TEENAGERS WHO GO TO A COMMUNITY COLLEGE!!!!
Everything comes from his website. You don't even need to go to the class sessions. Too picky. Profane
Bring a pillow.
Good class except for the grammar...do the rough drafts. You will read some pretty interesting books.
average
arrogant, somewhat funny, but saracastic, goes off topic, boring paper topics.
Very Very good professor. He's very informative and he truly cares about his students...
kinda funny and very helpful
Very opinionated. If you don't share the same views as him, then good luck. He says he isn't biased, but when he lectures for two days on one side of an argument (his side) and then ten minutes on the other side of the argument (not his side) you get the feeling that it's His Way or the Highway. If you're a suckup, you should do well in this class.
Pretty random essay topics and some are kind of difficult. His class lectures are interesting but he gets off track a lot of the time. Sometimes there is no point in coming to class though because we don't do anything during them especially when we have a essay assignment, which is basically the class: essay writing.
The class is fairly difficult but it is also very relaxed environment that is good for discussing whatever topic. He makes very clear what he is looking for on assignments and never fails to get an uproaring laugh from the class.
Essay topics and assignments are rather boring. But he doesn't pick on you, as other teachers do. He's a pretty cool guy, and he likes to talk and get side-tracked. The only problem I have is that he continues to talk even though the class is over. Bring something to entertain yourself.
He's the most interesting, personable and helpful professor I've ever had. His class was great fun and I'm very glad I met him. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
I had his English 300 and 302 class. He cares about his students just don't mistake his kindness for weakness. He is extremely intelligent he has street smarts and book smarts . Coming to every class does help your grade. God Bless Mr. Kahl.
I have no idea why he is teaching English instead of Economics. Most of his assignments involve the economy in some way, with very high word counts for some of the papers. Avoid unless you love economics.
I would not recommend this teacher, his lectures are dull and it is very hard to stay awake in his class. He gives out long reading assignments along with questions that take up a lot of time to complete. I dropped his class after two weeks so i don't know how he grades his essays.
he is a really great techer, he cares about his students and them actually learning something. he can be dry at times but you should still take him...
He is a very poor teacher and goes way off topic i did not learn a thing but he is very funny!!! He is hard because he doesnt even know what he is searching for in his assignments
I took his ENG300 Online. He hags on grading and likes everything simple and clean. If you complicate your essays he will bluntly express he does not understand. He gets sarcastically mean at times. Overall, the ENG300 Online class is start forward but alot of work.
I look professor Kahl for 300 and 302 and I recommend him to anyone who is interested in politics or economics. He's a pretty laid back guy and his grading isnt too hard but his subject matter can be daunting to some students. He's also really funny if you get his humor and is more than willing to help students who show some initiative. He's good!
Kahl is a good professor. Interesting class. It became more of a discussion class, I really liked that aspect. I was challenged to think about a topic in more depth and consider how and why I put evidence into an essay. The subject matter wasn't my favorite, but it was informative, and there were a lot of areas that could be expanded on in writing.
His teaching methods are inconstant and he gets way off topic. He obviously has very little interest in teaching,he pushes his own agenda and political views into all the assignments and he rants about how is life turned out mediocre. He is a sad man.
He only talks about politics and the economy, not English.
did not feel like an English class.. easy grader though.. if you do all your assignments you should be fine. He has a weird sense of humor and acts like he's teaching an Econ class..
This teacher loves to hear himself talk and will go off subject for 90% of the class preaching his political and economic views. We do not talk about english. In this critical thinking class your grade will suffer if you do not take his stance on a position paper. Going to class is a waste of time, but just do the assignments and you should pass.
Kahl is very motivated and helpful. I took his hybrid class and we meet once a week. He does go off topic at the beginning of class and loves to talk sports and current news. Books that were difficult to understand he explained. He was very lenient on grades; if you write your essay early enough and email him he'll help correct it before grading!
Extremely helpful, funny most of the times. Give lot of reading stuff but final is not in the class. Very picky but very easy while grading.Do all HW and u ll get an easy A
Easy fellow. Take his class and do HW should get an easy A
Great
Dude is chilled. He tries to be funny. He gets a good grade for effort (lol). But its pretty easy, do the work and you'll be good foo.
Definitely recommend for those who can already write. The process of 'learning' is pretty much non-existent here. Just complete your assigned papers & answer prompts. Very fair grader. Constantly digressing into other areas of discussion like baseball & news. If you're a C student, you should get a C & if your an A student, you should get an A.
Definitely recommend for those who can already write. The process of 'learning' is pretty much non-existent here. Just complete your assigned papers & answer prompts. Very fair grader. This class is critical thinking. It's not basic english in which you learn to write a 5 paragraph essay high school style. Don't hate because you thought you were a good writer or you don't agree with the professor or he finds fallacies in your paper. He's a really smart guy who has a lot of interesting things to say. He's easy.
Really enjoyed this professor. before I took this class I never learned how to properly write an essay. He hones your critical thinking and is entertaining in class. I learned a lot.
This instructor is very relaxed. Offers students opportunities to get a good grade by allowing proof reads, so students get feedback on paper before the final handoff. Use this! Don't take his comments personally he is supposed to let you know where you can impove. I enjoyed the class, he has a good sence of humor.
he's a chill dude
He is very funny, very chill.
This guy is really smart. If I remember correctly, said he was a chemist and decided to switch careers. Funny guy, great interesting discussions in class, although he does digress a lot. DO the papers early, send them in for review, and do well on the quizzes. Great teacher overall.
Took his class over the summer. Fairly easy. Only had to write 3 papers; 3,5 and 10 pages I think. Really relaxed teacher. He has most of his class work posted on his website, and as long as you turn in your work I don't think you had to come to class. I will most likely try to take him for 302 as well.
AMAZINGLY BRILLIANT! & HILARIOUS. He is so funny attendance not mandatory but totally worth going to listen to the discussions. LOTS of reading, 3 books, but really beneficial and informative! I would take Kahl again in a heartbeat. DO ALL of the homework or your grade will really suffer. 4 essays 1 online final! Easy grader too!
This guy is amazing! He is beyond organized. Work is posted on his online website. As an ENG major his reading load wasn't a lot to me but he has 3 books. But the books he chooses are good reads! Plus you can get the books at the public library or online for super cheap. Hats off to Prof. Kahl for being an outstanding instructor.
Kahl is one of the best/funniest/smartest/most insightful professor I have ever had. Definitely take him you will not regret it. It's Hard work but he does his best to inform his students and I swear you will leave his class feeling like a different and much more intelligent person.
Prof. Kahl was a nice guy, but his class wasn't very helpful for getting better at writing. He went off topic a lot. The papers were usually his choice, & on hard topics like Social Security. Any ENGWR class at 300 level isn't going to be easy, but I would recommend Prof. Joshua Roberts; took his online ENGWR 300 class & worked hard, but got an A.
Tim is a good professor, the 302 course I took wasn't about getting better at writing but getting better at critical thinking and how people are persuaded to act and think. He goes over some eye opening subjects about the economy and self-interest. He does go off topic occasionally but it is usually pertinent to the subject. Highly Recommended!
He reminds me of a teacher I used to have in high school, laid back and not really caring. I would ask for help on hw and would get no feedback. Highly reliant on reading, expects you to finish an entire book in a couple of days. Difficult class if you fall behind in reading and not doing the hw.
Kahl is hilarious. Enjoyed class but usually went off topic (in an entertaining way). Really smart dude. Grades leniently. Must be self motivated to keep up. Likes adding lots of liberal bias in to lecture (I didn't mind). Lots of reading books that aren't really interesting but I still enjoyed the class. I would recommend taking Prof. Kahl.
I'm really glad I took Tim for 302. His class will definitely help you think more analytically and critically about current events/issues. If you are willing to have your opinions and/or preconceived notions challenged, take Tim. I never missed a class even tho attendance really isn't required.
I do not agree with most post on here, I did not have a good experience. He overloads you with papers one after another, we had a paper due and were supposed to start reading the next book & turn in questions for it the same day. he is not very helpful when asked questions and over half my class failed his class, super late on grading papers also.
Does not respect students. Unclear instructions and complete wastes of time to take this class... learn nth
lecture class is like .. discussion between him and two people in class. learn nth
very enjoyable class for those who choose to participate. lectures can be fun if you choose to participate but most of the class sits there with their faces in their cell phones.. too bad for them. Professor Kahl is very talented and very interested in student success.
5 papers, less than 1000 words (1 research paper is 2000). You dont have to show up to pass, just keep up with the homework and essays (All assignments are on his website). I would have passed this if the deadlines were set in stone, lacked motivation. This is a pretty easy class to pass and I really enjoyed the readings and the teacher.
He's a really laid back professor. If you need clarification, always ask! He'd be there to answer any questions. If you work hard, you'd receive an A. If you don't put in too much work, you'd pass but not with a high grade.
Prof. Kahl is a very intelligent and hilarious person. He's very laid-back and does not check attendance. Although he may crack jokes most of the time, his insights about things are profound and meaningful. Would definitely take his classes again.
I've taken Kahl twice and I think he's great. Book choices aren't the easiest, but they're very insightful. The big thing is that you get out what you put in. Its easy to make the most out of class time by asking questions and discussing with him. Work hard and participate, you will find his classes very rewarding.
Enjoyed this class a lot, learned a lot from the readings and over all, very laid back. Keeping up is very hard though once you fall behind in reading because the class takes no breaks. I did enjoy coming as often as i could just because the discussions were so fun! The readings are also very very insightful!
I just adore Professor Kahl. He is hilarious and very laid back. I loved that he created a comfortable environment where you knew you wouldn't be judged based on your opinion. I learned a lot from him both as a student and as a person. You should take him if you are self-motivated. Don't take him if you're a slacker, you won't make it to the end.
His lectures may get you tired, but it is genuinely interesting. Before he grades papers, he lets you submit in a nongrade rough draft so he can fix your paper before submitting it in. Took him for summer, so no idea what it'd be like during regular semesters. But readings every night with dozens of questions. Easy class if you put in the work.
This guy doesn't care about attendance. Turned out my class had over 5-10 people a day. You may turn in work online and not show up but I don't recommend. We had four books to read four essays. It was about the government and economics so be ready for that. Although, he is kind about due dates. You can turn in an essay week later & he won't mind.
Little instruction from the teacher in terms of what he expected. Its pretty much up to you to ask questions about assignments, papers, etc... Class sessions are casual and dont always have a focus or topic. Cool teacher but the class lacks structure.
If you cant sit through reading for hours do not take the class. This class will feel like an economics class. There are four essays that are not very long and are somewhat difficult but he will do his best to help you out with your essays. If you are not good at English do not take this class! Hes also late every day.
If you're willing to do the work its pretty easy. you read 4 books and write essays on each with given prompts. laid back class and his lectures do get good sometimes. also very funny if the class is cool.
Not one of the best, but he is certainly up there. Clear grading criterea, you can sumbit rough drafts a dozen time, gets off-topic a lot to connect points of equal value. Affable, open, and reponses to e-mails are very quick. He definitely wants you to think outside of the box unlike traditional English Professors. Get ready to put in that work!
You read books and write essays what else were you expecting? He does have some insightful grammar resources and the books he chooses are generally relevant.
Professor Kahl was a very cool professor, he is VERY laid back you can be on your phone the entire time and he won't say anything. there were a lot of books to read but over all very easy class.
You show up, sit there, and listen to him rant for an hour, then go home. Lectures are entirely economics based, and he offers decent insights to the economic history and trends of this country. Grades essays and homework easily. You can use phone, play games on laptop, or do homework you should have done earlier while in class. No plan, just rants
Very tough grader. He's not afraid to be passive aggressive towards you. My advice is to be on his good side at all times. He's usually pretty late, allowing extra time to catch up on things. The days are never planned, just rants on whatever assignment was given.
Lecture is not mandatory, but coming to class and reviewing submitted rough draft papers allows you to see what you should and shouldn't do. The class is an easy A as long as you just follow his criteria and try. Allows you to be on your phone, etc. Comes 7-10 min. late to class.
This was the worst Professor that I have ever taken!! He barely responds to emails, assigns so many books to read in such a short amount of time, assigns an essay for every book and our final was about the political topic not even anything that we learned in class. we didnt learn in class we read a book answered questions and wrote essays.
He is really picky about what he thinks is good, and what isn't. I went to the writing center a couple times and got a lot of help with drafting and final drafting my papers, and he disliked everything I wrote. He's a good guy, funny even, but his class made me want to cry.
absolutely no structure in his class. shows up and rants for an hour about whatever then answer questions about the books/paper for like 10 minutes. DOES NOT BELIEVE IN CANVAS LOL...aka he uses his own outdated website and takes FOREVER to grade. will talk about his personal beliefs on pronouns so you go by they/them i would steer clear...
Always shows up 15-30 minutes late, very laid back work is easy you do read a bit just rants the whole time talks about random stuff, does not even discuss his work and easys like he should be doing, he is funny, essays are a tough he does let you redo work for a better grade, there are better professer's this one is not one of them.
Once you get used to his grading style, it becomes a little easier to decipher what he deems is a good paper or not. There's not too much homework: a few question sets in regards to certain books he requires and some essays. He is constantly late to class and him taking attendance when the class first started in the beginning is laughable.
gosh, I slept for half of all the classes I took with professor Kahl. He told me he doesn't have a PhD, red flag number one. Always late to HIS class. Outdated website threw me 30 years back in time and is hard to navigate. Not clear on what's due when. We have to read three books this semester which threw me through a loop.
VERY unclear grading technique, uses a website from the 90's (DOES NOT USE CANVAS), exposes everyone's grades publicly on website, rambles constantly, ALWAYS LATE TO HIS OWN CLASS (at least 5-15 min), only one assignment that really matters (2,000 minimum word essay NOT BASED ON THE BOOK AT HAND).
This class isn't hard. If you can attend and do the work, great. However, this professor did not make me interested in learning English, rambles a lot, quite biased, he was late to his own classes and his choices of books made me uncomfortable. Not the end of the world if you choose this professor, but you will not be engaged. wouldn't recommend.
We had to read three books. talks inappropriately in lectures and asks weird questions, the book choices made me uncomfortable because they all have "scenes" in them. Rambles in lectures and never talks about writing or reading, just talks about economics and politics. Grading is super unclear, and his website is hard to navigate.
Not a good English professor, definitely could see him being an Economics or Social Science Professor because he talks about everything but English. The books assigned were off-putting, I can not say I liked any of the ones I have read during his class. His website is hard to navigate plus a very harsh grader. It was hard to get an A in his class.
I would not recommend his class. I took him last year and hated it. He is always off topic, talking about random stuff. I didn't learn a thing. He is an interesting guy with an interesting teaching style. He doesn't use Canvas and instead makes us use his outdated and confusing website. Overall, he should be your last option.
