Great professor! Had an evening class, make sure to show up to every class, follow the syllabus. Had 3 test and 2 quiz. Professor Kestner is very knowledgable. I would definetly recommend this class!
Prof. Kestner is a phenominal teacher! Class is structured so that anyone can get a good grade if you put in a little effort. Exam ?s straight from lectures, uses PowerPoint to highlight important info. Does a review to go over any confusing ?s. Take home & in class map quizzes. Allows students to speak up & disagree if they can prove their point.
He is a very nice professor and understanding. His material is very straight forward and with a bit of effort you can pass his class.
great
AWESOME I got an A
Very boring class, he reads right off the powerpoints and his voice makes me fall asleep. There are take home map quizes, pretty easy, but do not rely on those. His test questions are hard and tricky. Must Read the books!
Worst professor I've had thus far at VCU. Supremely boring and frustrating. Some of his test questions are straight from the book but many are overly specific and only "click" in his brain. I can tell even the students who were interested in the subject were bored by his monotone voice. Also shows pointless movies.
Interesting class!
I would not listen to any of the clowns below. Kestner is a great professor and even better guy. He does his best to make foreign politics interesting. If you participate and go to class he will reward you. He does everything he can to help you suceed and I would definitely take any class w/ him again.
He is so easy! I am HORRIBLE with social studies/govt/etc, but I received an A in his class and never read the books or articles. His tests are online and have 100 questions. He gives you more than ample time, two tries, AND he curves. He's really funny, too, although his southern drawl has made me want to pass out before.
He is showing us his ratings on this website right now. Good start sir.
This class was gr8! Lots of discussion and often good laughs. Enjoyable class and gr8 and very lenient professor-multiple attempts on online exams. He wants everyone to do well, and if you put forth the effort you will succeed. Show up, turn in assignments, take map quizzes, take exams on time, and be a social person-should earn an A or B!
Dear Professor Kestner, I like you, but "deflamatory" is not a word. You've used it at least 3 times at this point. Defamatory is, however, a perfectly valid word. Thanks!
A really cool guy. The exams can be VERY tricky, but they are online so you can use notes and take them twice. He has a hilarious dry sense of humor which I find very funny. The class can get boring especially when its 7-940 and there is a TON of material- but I would def reccomend this prof!
Take this class! Tests are tricky but he knows that and you get two online attempts. Overall- nice guy, good class. Take this class if you can! (oh I didnt buy the book and still did fine- save yourself the money)
Nice guy. An economist first and a professor second, and it shows in his wrist-slittingly boring powerpoint lectures. Don't listen to the others -- you will want to buy the book unless you want to rely solely on his generous curves. Turn off your stupid cell phones, stop going on facebook in class, and don't sign the roll for someone else and you'l
He is going to show this to you students on the first day of class. So hello Kestner, let all your students know right now that you are a dictator and don't allow laptops, cell phones, or breathing in during your class. Although I can read a magazine or fall asleep and somehow that is acceptable. Soon you'll be teaching about Obamunism! Hooray!
Not bad. GO TO CLASS. he is serious about attendance. 4 or more and he drops your grade by a LETTER. You'll probably be okay without the book. I only bought the second one and I did great in the class, only reason why I have a B is because of attendance. DO NOT TAKE 7-9:40. you will be there the whole time.
Mr. Kestner, was a nice teacher. although very boring. Extremely boring. I always got lost in his class and slept. He never went over the material that will be on the exam. You must read the book. Great teavher only if you are a history major. Other than that I suggest not taking him.. Seriously.. I managed to get pass by reading the entire book
I don't know what these ppl are talking bout! He can't make the class any EASIER. His rules are the SAME as any other Professor. Y go to class and use your phone or laptop? Or why NOT attend class? He has a sense of humor which makes the time in class bearable. I have the 7 to 9:40 slot. Ppl who rate badly for him are LAZY! This class is NOT hard.
This guy and his class are a joke. No laptops and no cell phones. No cell phones, ok. No laptop? I have notes to take! Not to mention his monotone droning voice is so soporific you will be alseep in MINTUES. Tests are online and a pain in the ass, almost everything comes from the books, rendering his mandatory attendance pointless. Avoid him!
The class was kinda boring, especially having it from 7 to 9:40. Three tests and two map quizzes that are easy if you put the time in. An easy A if you attend and read the book. He has a sense of humor and tries to make it as interesting as possible.
Funny guy, who really knows what he's talking about. If you do not have an interest in economics of the world and government you will NOT enjoy this class. 7 to 9:40 was difficult to endure and he takes attendance at the beginning AND ending of every class, you have to be on both roles. Tests are online with book and notes, with 2 attempts=EASY.
class was a joke. it was the most boring class I've ever been in. bring something else to do otherwise you'll want to die. he takes attendance during the beginning and end of class so you have to stay. tests are all online which makes this class really easy. take this class if you don't care about human globalizations because you don't do anything!
Whatever you do, do not show up late, he will throw a temper tantrum and tell you that you don't belong in his good society. Otherwise, the class is easy, bring other HW to work on or you will find yourself asleep even where you are not sleepy.
Knows what he's talking about, has a dry sense of humor that you have to pay attention to in order to pick up. Class may get boring, but the online tests are a cakewalk if you took decent notes and have the textbooks. BUY THE TEXTBOOKS! They alone can get you A's on the exams
OK, so this man is a great professor. Very funny and entertaining and he can actually make a 3 hour history class bearable. The fact that he looks like a vampire, with his beady little eyes and all, and thus that he is really sexy definitely helps also. I love him, especially when he makes suggestive comments.
Attendance is mandatory. Aside from the midterm, the exams are online and easy. He usually lets out early. He will throw a fit if you show up late. No laptops allowed, so bring a book, because the Powerpoints are on Blackboard, thus I could perhaps teach the class from my living room. Oh, and Tim...you are sexy. Too bad you are married (I think).
Knows his stuff and makes the class pretty easy if you read and show up. I wish he taught upper level courses instead of 101. Most of the class doesn't get his subtle jokes, especially when he trashes smarta$s students who are disrespectful all while maintaining his cool.
The class is pretty easy. Anyone can pass this class with an A or B only if s/he take the tests a day or two before the due date, if not, well it sucks to be you. The teacher is quite intoned with the subject and can go on and on when teaching. Beware of his monotone voice, which can put even the rowdiest African lion to sleep within two minutes. A
I Loved this class!! while the information in the class can be kind of repetitive it's easy! All he asks is that you show up, pay attention, participate and DON'T text (on phone or laptop). His test are easy, online, two tries, 3+ hours.
Open discussion class that offers a refreshing taste to large in-class lectures. Kestner is both humorous and witty which makes the lectures bearable. Pay attention, PARTICIPATE, and attend and he will be more than obliged to offer assistance. Honestly, I would know.Overall he is a terrific professor with keen insight, not a horrible class at all.
Professor Kestner is DEFINITELY one of my favorite professors at VCU. Not only does he know what he is talking about, but he's hilarious and does a good job of teaching the material. A lot of the stuff that he teaches is REALLY boring, but he makes it as entertaining as it could possibly be. Definitely take his class. :)
One of the most entertaining lectures I have ever had. The open classroom discussions were always interesting. He knows his stuff and has a good sense of humor.
This class is rewarding, the negative aspects are the students who moan and groan. No wonder USA falls behind most western educational standards. Grow up whiners. Tim, A&E History makes me want to barf. PBS Frontline is a great source for same content but will intrigue class far more. Dick Cheney can time travel, never forget this.
Prof Kestner is generally a great guy, he's funny and really clever and smart. However, his powerpoints and normal lectures are extremely boring, and his tests require you to read the whole (awful) book. The one redeeming aspect of class were the discussions, which were normally fun. But overall, you could do worse than this class.
He gives *very* good final exam reviews.
You're probably reading this to ur spring class soon-so hello, Professor K! You were pretty good, although a 3 hr class w/ u was just painful. I wish there was more than just a political angle on your class, I would have actually enjoyed the class. People aiming for his class, he's like L'Oreal: he's worth it; if you're willing to pay the price.
Great teacher, he tells you on the first day that his class is boring, but he is very knowledgable and entertaining. And Professor K have fun reading these posts to future classes. especially the beady eyed vampire post.
Solid class. You know it's time to learn when the Timster walks into class with a fresh turtleneck and starbucks at hand. Focus during the powerpoints. The Timster will ramble, but that's what makes the class interesting, if you're into dry humor-he'll make you chuckle. If you're into older men, go for it. NOSTROVIA
Citizen's...Fear not as most of you will fair well in the class. Get the book. Read it. Ace the exams. Show up to class. You've earned an A! I was not interested in the subject and found myself dozing off during many a class. To those of you looking for a good nap, the movie about the Russian revolution makes for soothing background noise
DO NOT TEXT IN HIS CLASS because he will catch you and call you out.. (i was never caught haha ;) ) but on the real, he's not that bad. His comments throughout class make it a bearable 3 hour lecture. Pay attention, but really it's okay if you don't because you can take all the exams twice. Ask irrelevant questions cause he gets distracted easily!
Take this class if you are looking for an easy A. All tests are online, open book/notes, you have 3 hours, and you get to take it twice. The material isn't all that interesting but he is an entertaining guy some of the time. You can only miss 2 classes before he deducts your grade and you cant have a laptop, but i don't regret taking it.
BORING! This class is so boring so if you need a 50 minute nap in your day, take it. Everythings online and his password game for attendance is easy to get around.
If you are going to take this class, and don't care about politics, take the 50 minute classes or you will get bored and fall asleep. If you're really into politics, so is this professor. He's a good guy who is passionate about what he teaches. I like that in a teacher even if I don't share the interest. Tests are online, lectures on powerpoint.
He's very monotone, very sarcastic, and can be boring. However, he knows what he is talking about and obviously loves it. I found his witty comments hilarious. He knows some interesting ways to relate what you are learning to real life situations. His tests are open-book, however, that doesn't mean they are easy. Overall a GREAT teacher.
If you like politics he is a great professor. Even better if you and others engage him in class. Exams are online and open book AND you get to take them twice (keep highest grade). Easy A if you are not a moron and interesting and fun IF you like politics.
LOVE this professor! his lectures are amazing (because he has a sense of humor)... he is not flexible when it comes to TARDY or NOT showing up, then he becomes an ASS! I could have gotten an A but he gave me a B, only because i missed ONE class and was late twice! SO if you are willing to SHOW up and NOT fall asleep(he will humiliate you if you fal
Kestner is amazing! His humour is unparalleled, and he relates the topics to daily life. Engaging lectures. Not the easiest if you're not really into political science, but the exams are open book, so don't worry too much. If you need to take INTL 101, DEFINITELY take Kestner! No homework, no papers. Easy A. Pay attention, and you'll do fine.
I thought he was sort of a jerk. He made you attend every class, sign the attendance sheet twice. He teaches off the slides, which are not even the focus of the Test. You have two tries to take the test, and its best to do them with 3 people.
Kestner is a wonderful teacher, and has a firm grasp on his subject's material which is more than can be said for many 101 teachers. Unfortunately I had to sit by and watch him have eye intercourse with literally every 'hot' blonde girl in the class. As a dude this is both disturbing and extremely annoying to sit through twice a week. Please stop.
Knows what he's talking about and is actually interested in what he's teaching. Night class=easy, open book tests, just not help from others. Only map quizzes are memorization. Interesting if you pay attention...
Extremely easy class. The only downside is it is extremely boring. I find politics to be very interesting, and I found it hard to stay awake in this class. But other than that, take if you want an easy A. Open book tests, even gives you 2 attempts. Map quizzes are memorization, and attendance is mandatory. He'll also yell at you for txting/computer
Great professor!! very interesting, funny and knows his stuff. He's interested in getting his students to think!!
Nice guy, really funny. He's very knowledgeable. However if you take the long night class, it will be pretty boring at times unless you're really into politics. The class is pretty easy, 3 exams online (2 tries, takes the highest grade and is open book) and two map quizzes. Easy A
amazing teacher, smart, entertaining, very helpful
The class isn't easy, but its all open note tests. If you go to class and take great notes it helps you on all of his tests! He is an awesome guy! The material can be a bit dry, but he is so interesting to come sit and listen to. Very interesting class!
Personally, I was not interested in this subject so half the time i found his lectures kindof boring. However he would do his best to bring a spark and interest to the class (Most of the time winning). try not to go to the class tired! It is a very good chance you will fall asleep. Read the chapters and you will do fine on the OPEN BOOK/NOTE TESTS
He is the best professor I have had in a very long time. This topic is not my strongest, but he was able to help me understand. The class was very interesting and well worth attending. Participation in class was fun and enriching. You won't be disappointed.
He was one of my favorite professors. He only gives 5 tests. They are all online and 3 are open note open book, so buy the book! The other 2 are map quizzes, but they are easy. I loved the class, so take it! He is very entertaining and funny. Attendance is mandatory so you do have to go!
His class is not overtly difficult, but the discussions do not assist with learning the material. Very much a self taught class, but attendance is mandatory. Stay awake but no real point in actively trying to participate as he picks a few students repeatedly.
History/ politics aren't my thing and being in a lecture for almost 3 hours is pretty boring but the class isn't too hard. Only grades are clicker questions for participation and tests that are online and open book/ note. The tests are still pretty tough and worded difficultly. If you pay attention and take notes you'll be fine. Power points on BB.
Extremely rude and pompous. Does not care if you miss class because of a funeral or sickness he will still take away points. When trying to talk to him he will continue to talk to other people and ignore you no matter how important you feel your conversation is. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS MAN!!
I borrowed the text from a friend for the open-book online tests, missed 3 classes (met once a week), and still got an A. He's really nice and passionate about his subject. He knows that its boring and tries to make it more interesting by in class debates on controversial subjects. Seriously easy and fairly interesting, given the subject.
He's a cool guy. He won't let you use any electronic devices so be prepared for that. He's very approachable if you have an issue or concern. Class in general was boring, its 3 hours, but he tries to spice it up with discussions. 3 tests, 2 map quizzes all online. Be in class and its an easy A
EASIEST A YOU WILL EVER GET!! All open book tests online. 2 map quizzes online. Class at night sucks because you take attendence twice 7 and 915 and you absolutely do not ever have to step foot in class to get an A. but if you miss classes he has it set up to where A's on all the assignments wont matter. BUUT EASY A
Loves his subject and tries to make it interesting. His voice is so soporific, though, I had a hard time staying awake, no matter what kind of night I'd had beforehand.
Self important, long winded and generally really annoying. That being said the tests are open book and online. He takes attendance once and sometimes twice a class for a 300 person lecture. Annoys me every class.
Lectures are monotonous repetitions of material in textbook; however you are required to attend. If you miss more than 7 classes, you automatically fail. His tests are often confusing. Questions that have multiple correct answers only allow you to choose one. I adore the subject but he made the class almost unbearable for me. Would not recommend.
All test/quizzes are all online. On his tests he has questions specific to the lecture, but he sometimes rushes through the lecture and he does not post the power points on blackboard. He recommends taking test/quizzes on desktop to avoid connection issue, i did that and the computer shut off on me. I was able to get it reset with a 5 point penalty
Come to class, take notes, BOOM done. But no seriously take notes. On his tests, he literally references to the slide number it was on and sometimes his answers don't match the book, just to see if you pay attention. 3 exams, 2 map quizzes and all online.
I received an A in this class.. BUT because all his exams are open book & online. Map quizzes are easy (and online aka you can just cheat) He's kind of a nazi about coming to class, not using your phone during lecture, being talkative, etc. Mandatory attendance is annoying but easy A if you ask me.
Great guy, but gosh hes strict about attendance, laptop use and cell phones. MUST TAKE NOTES- all tests are online and open book but are very specific. I f i was able to use my laptop in class my notes would have been 90% better. My grade suffered because he would go so fast in some lectures. Most boring class i've ever taken, but easy to pass.
Attendance is absolutely mandatory. He's a stickler for phone use and skipping class. But all quizzes and tests are online/open book so it's pretty impossible to fail. I had an evening class with him and his monotonous voice put me to sleep every class. Easy A though.
a very easy class, 6 exams, 3 open book online, 3 have a study guide, COPY DOWN THE SLIDE NUMBER while taking notes, he askes for specific slide numbers on tests. other than that hes hella easy. only way you cant get an a is if you dont try,
Like everyone else has said, attendance is mandatory. Don't use any tech devices, laptops included, don't interrupt the class with side conversations, he will single you out and it WILL be embarrassing. He keeps to the book and make sure to write slide numbers down. All exams and quizzes are online and open book but are timed.
I am a psychology major and took this class as a gen ed. I thought Professor Kestner was very interesting as well as the class overall. The exams were straight-forward. As long as you went to class, took notes, read/skim the book, you will get an A. I would highly take him again.
Such a funny teacher, I really enjoyed his class. This capstone class is almost entirely discussion based and most of the grade comes from the final paper due at the end of the semester. He let's you do your paper at your own pace which is a really big plus!
Timmy is the best! Just don't pull out your phone or laptop or he'll call you out on it. He's passionate about what he teaches and brings in guest speakers sometimes.
Takes both an initial and ending roll for a 300 person lecture hall; miss either one and you're absent, 6 absences and letter grade drops (another letter for each subsequent miss). Half the time the ending roll doesn't reach the back of the hall before class is over so either be proactive about chasing it down or suffer. Easy online tests. Decent.
Took this class as a gen. ed. and actually enjoyed. Tests are online and open book, with a small portion in class (no open book). And writing down the slide numbers will make the tests much easier. He does a great job at explaining everything and is happy to answer questions. I had a 3 hour lecture but it rarely lasts that long and goes by fast.
Kestner CAN be funny and interesting, but no where near how much he thinks he is. I took a 7 pm to 940 pm and it wasn't bad at all. He always let out early (830-9) but does take attendance before and after class so SHOW UP! If you don't your grade is seriously affected. I did't enjoy the class and I wish I had taken another. Too many notes to take!
Professor Kestner was fantastic for my senior seminar class. Come to class ready to talk and enjoy utilizing all the information you've gathered thus far in your degree. I was pleasantly surprised with the class. You don't need a textbook and the research paper is developed throughout the semester with plenty of feedback from P. Kestner and peers.
Professor Kestner is awesome. Class is vey interesting and easy. Just take notes and attend class you will pass with A.
I took his class over the summer. He is ok but boring. His tests are online but on a browser that locks your computer from going to another screen. You can miss 2 classes, if you miss a third you need a doctors note for all of 3 them. I had to miss two due to the stomach flu, 1 for a funeral. i lost points for since a funeral can not have a note.
Do not have homework. The exam is easy. And the class is easy but boring! He is a good professor!
Really funny, makes the lectures interesting, most of the time doesn't take the whole 2 hours. The only thing is he does attendance in the beginning and end of class so attendance does matter. All the exams are online but there is a small but super easy in-class portion for each one that always has a word bank.
This is a "whatever" class to me; I did not get my $ worth in this course. Lectures and book dont really go with q's on the exams. Exams 25% online MC questions and 75% in class fill-in-the-blank. Took wednesday night 7-940 and usually left by 8:30. Not a horrible class but not great... not a bad option for a gen-ed, but don't make this a priority.
Go to class. Take notes. Read materials you'll be solid. I found his lectures to be interesting even though I'm a math major. It's the only 2+ hour class I've taken in three years that didn't bore me to sleep. His grading criteria his clear. Attendance necessary. Great professor.
Go to class and right notes and you will get an A on his exams. His exams are two parts online and in class and every thing on those exams is from lecture slides. He is great and cares about his students.
Amazing person and professor. I learned a lot from this course and actually got to know him as a person. Just show up, participate, and take notes and it will be impossible to get anything below an A.
Professor Kestner was very hard, in my opinion. His 3 tests weighed so much and those and 2 other map quizzes were all the class grade consisted of. Each test had an online portion and in class portion. You could do good on the online and do bad on the in class, and still fail. We were out by 9:00 every week which was nice but such a boring class!!
Was clearly a seasoned professor, very nice and knowledgeable. Lectures were long and sometimes a little boring. Only 2 tests and 2 quizzes so you have to do well on those. Did not post the powerpoints or give study guides. A little scatter brained so ask the TA for help. Tests were fill in the blank or take home so not too difficult
Timothy was great. He was engaging but also funny. The material isn't the most interesting but he tried to make it somewhat fun. He also hates phones and computers, and has no problem calling people out for using them inappropriately. Tests were partially online and in class, and very straightforward. The book has info that will be on tests.
I took prof Kestner for INTL101. He's really nice but if you miss more than 2 classes then he drops your grade a letter for each class missed. Class can be kind of boring but it's an easy A if you show up. You only get graded on 2 map quizzes and 3 tests but they're pretty easy and he gives a word bank. I only studied before exams and I got an A.
