I can't say enough about this Professor. LOVED being in his class. Taught me all i know about Political Science. He is there 100% of the time for his students, you can always check your grade online ( through his website), and most of all he listens.
I wasn't familiar with the terms realist or a neo-realist until I took his class. Quizzes are easy if you've kept up with your readings (he uses them to take attendance). Moderate difficulty of his exams.
Prof. Lim is one of the best in his field. He is non-biased and clear about what he expects of you. He does not ask for more from you than he is willing to give. I am really glad to have had him as my instructor.
Good, but demanding teacher.
Dr. Lim knows his material extremely well. Is he demanding? Absolutely. Students should only take his classes if they are serious about the field. He has ALWAYS been there for his students. How many professors do you know that respond to e-mails on weekends? Take as many classes you can from Dr. Lim if you are majoring in political science.
Very demanding of students time outside of class. Extremely smart and informative. Don't take him for two classes at once....unless you are asking for a death wish.....you'll love him if your liberal but also gives conservatives a chance in class too.
He sucks!
Awful teacher. Rude. Unhelpful. Unwilling to give you the time of day even though he expects everything under the sun from you. Hes lectures are boring and not even that helpful. Very harsh. AWWFUUL!!!
One of the worst professors I have ever had the pain to have. UGH!!! He was rude and boring as hell. He reads dirrectly form the book (whicj he wrote) Quizes are verbatum. U may use a synonym but it will be wrong.. TAKE EXCACT NOTES!! Dont miss class (Quiz
he is one of the best professor in political science department of cal state L.A.
demanding
TOO DEMANDING AND TOO MANY QUIZZES
Lim seems like a really nice guy and most definately knows his stuff. I think part of the problem with him is that he teaches some very boring and difficult material. His class would be so much better if he were a little more direct and clear on what we needed to know for exams. A study guide that says study everything kind of defeats the purpose.
This is not a class where you can get an easy A. You will need to work and read, read, and did I mention read? Weekly quizes (which are open note) are given, which to me beat writing a 10 to 15 page research paper. Lectures are very detailed so come to class. I learned a lot from Prof. Lim, he is very knowledgable about the subject.
Show up to the classes ON TIME. Quizzes are given out at the start of every class and there are no make ups. Lim presents the subject at hand in a methodical, well organized manner. No paper in the class, but there are 2 mini-essays which are 1-2 pages each double spaced.
Be prepared for a challenge! DO NOT expect to get an easy "A" in his class. He is clear in his lectures and in his expectations. His classes really require ALL your effort. He quizzes you every class meeting so you MUST keep up with the reading. It can get a little frustrating but thats only because he wants you to reach your full potential.
Very demanding professor, but lets you know what he expects of you. He is also very helpful. He uses the textbook a lot and take good notes off of his powerpoint presentations. There were 3 mini essays and a final (which he gives you a lot of info on what he is looking for). Do not be late to class.
Don't miss the quiz, take good notes in class and from the text(ahead of class), make sure you understand what he wants for the miniessays. Dr.Lim doesn't give an easy A but if you work for it, it's not impossible. You'll learn a lot from him.
hard class but worth it
Lim knows his stuff.but give me a break.1st he makes you buy HIS book because he feels no other books out there are good enough for him to use. 2nd,his lectures are beyond boring, everything you read he goes over in class in the most mind numbing manner.there is nothing in this class that stimulates the mind.take good notes & good luck.dont be late
REALLY ENJOYED THE CLASS. LEARNED SO MUCH. GO TO CLASS, READ YOUR NOTES, AND HIS POWERPTS, EASY A OR B.
He is one of the best professors POLS dept can offer. If you're complaining about his class being demanding and not useful, that means you need to change your major. If you want a job with a politics degree, you need to get used to dealing with demanding situations.
This teacher is too coldly scientific. He has a very flat, boring and overly organized teaching style. He gives daily quizzes at the first minute to make sure that if your late your grade will suffer. He only requires a book he wrote which he pretty much goes over it word-for-word. Not fun.
Very demanding. When I took his course I didn't know anyone who was Ace-ing the class. Unbiased, knowledgable, but very long winded; bring coffee. Teaches directly out of his own book. Excellent if you don't know anything about political theory and uses weblink forums. Terrible grader.
Dr. Lim is very knowledgeable in the area of Global Political Economy. He is very very demanding. If you want to pass this class be ready to work and attend every single class meeting. Other than that, all the assignments although hard, can really help understand the world political enconomy.
He is demanding but not as difficult as everyone is making him seem. You must go to class every meeting or your grade will suffer. He demands that you write journal entries, submit question cards, Read the book thourghly and take notes, and complete web assignments. He is helpful if uou ask him a question. This class is not easy by any standards .. also he keeps you in the whole class period
If you have to take his class may God have mercy on your soul. I did not know anyone who was doing well in his class. He takes his lecture note right from the textbook which he wrote himself and it is a difficult book to read. You are required to go to every class and will have a quiz or reading question due at the start of each class.
He is seriously not that hard, people are just lazy. You HAVE to read the material in order to pass the class. He is always willing to help the students. He does grade hard, but both times I have taken him I have gotten good grades, A and B :)
Teaching method involves TONS of reading and long lectures. His powerpoints are interactive, though. He is very intelligent and hard to engage in a good debate because he can easily shoot you down, so dont try to be smart. Attendance mandatory for good grade. Very demanding but once you figure him out, it's easy.
At first i hated him, he was so strict, but i ended up really enjoying his class. he had topics that were relevant and he kept it interesting (his pwr point was great) Yes, he is tough...be on time, do not miss class, and dont leave early. hes great though, call me crazy, but i kinda had a crush on him.
kinda hard butif you read the text before class and keep all your quizes you will pass. he mostly repeats the questions and the essays are not that long but make sure your on point. overall drink coffee before class and take good note. open notes on quizes!
Attend class every single time, do well on quiz's, and u should be fine, good professor
Good teacher, struggled with essays but overall pretty decent instructions. Read the book, take notes from lecture and write the answers for the questions in each chapter, and above all drink coffee. I would have received a better grade if I did not forgot an essay assignment, I end up turning it in late with a deduction.
He is a really good teacher. I have had him for 373 and 427 and I learned a lot from both classes, but 427 was way more interesting. He is extremely difficult and you HAVE to read, but this just means you're getting the most out of your tuition. I didn't have any interest in world politics at first, but after his classes I'm hooked. Love him!
Gives quiz 1st 5 minutes of class, never clear about what's going to be on the quiz; he'll often tell you to read one thing & then it'll be on another. Requires papers to be single spaced; hard grader and does not want you to think on your own, just write what he wants to here. Dull lectures that go to the very last minute of class.
enthusiastic and knowledgeable prof. the class is reading heavy, he randomly quizzes you on the book. he uploads his ppts. there are several small writing assignments, take home essays for mt and final, all based on reading but no outside research required.
Attend class every week, do well on quizzes, turn in all your assignments, and you should end up with minimum a B. His lectures are very clear, good professor.
The best professor in the department. Down to Earth, always prepared, clear, direct and knowledgable. You know your standing, you know your due dates, you know your next step, no drama, less stress. And please don't complain about his quizzes, he makes it clear when to expect them. Dr. Lim is the best!
Great professor.
great teacher. taking notes during lecture very important but reading>lecture for exams. as long as you are willing to read 40-80 pages a week for his class than you will be fine. but if you hate alot of reading for classes, then find another class as you will not enjoy this class. interesting class thoguh, i learned what the US foreign policy is
Lim really got me interested in global politics, that just shows how interesting his class lectures were. His class is a bit challenging as far as the readings go only because you are expected to read a chapter before class and do assignments based on it, so you are required to actually read to pass class. He is very nice, assignments are easy.
ABSOLUTLEY HORRIBLE! HE IS NOT HELPFUL AND UNWILLING TO HELP OUT STUDENTS. HE HAS LIKE 10 QUESTIONS "YOU MUST ASK YOURSELF" FOR JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING. HIS LECTURES ARE BEYOND UNENTERTAINING, HE HAS A CONDENSATING DEMEANOR TOWARDS STUDENTS. HIS WEEKLY QUIZZES ARE SCORED HARSHLY AND SO ARE HIS WRITING ASSIGNMENTS. HE USES HIS OWN BOOK
There are weekly readings with a take home assignment and quiz, show up for class lectures are long but not entirely uninteresting and he always lets you our a half hour early for his night classes. Show up to class, he uses tophat for attendance! Overall he is a good professor and I would take him again.
Lim's classes are not for the average student. You have to read, think about the material, attend every class, and participate in lectures or you will probably not get an A. Lim and McLendon make the poli-sci program great! Take a look at the spellinggrammar in the bad review below, it's indicative of who doesn't do well in his class lol
He is a tough grader when it comes to the papers. Make sure you do the reading or you won't pass his class.
Nothing says 'control freak' like attendance quizzes due at the start of class AND yet another after the break (which he openly admits is just in case you try to leave early). He takes a kind of 'one size fits all' approach to pedagogy, which is completely counterproductive. He should be teaching at a high school, not at a university. Worst prof ev
Taken Lim twice now and he along w a few other teachers are the beating heart of the dept. If you don't read but follow the news, probably a B or lower. If you want an A, you really have to work for it and apply information into his context. Hw rlly forces me to think, but he keeps grades updated, hw every class, attendance quizes. You will learn!
Has take home daily quizzes usually true or false, occasional fill n the blank and short answer responses. Has class work assignment where everyone in group has to contribute to a collective paper. The final consist two essays both of at least two paged single spaced, which is 45% of the grade. HE said that most people will only get 69-75% on final
I would never take this professor again he was long and drawn out. Very hard to pay attention to. He lectures to the very end of class. He boring as hell. Hard class to enjoy!
Professor Lim has lost it. I had to make an account to warn people not to take his Political Science course. He has so many assignments and expects them all to be done within a week; 4-5 quizzes, an essay, video and quiz assignment, short answer essay, quick response, discussion on a topic. ALL WITHIN A WEEK! When approached, he brushed it off.
The worst professor i have ever taken for an online class. Way too much homework and extremely tough grader. By the way, this is only a lower division GE course . I hate Poli Sci because of him. Do not take him, or he will kill your grade. Assignments are so confusing, and he keeps changing the submission date.
Great professor. Cares about his students and wants them to absorb the information given. Clear grading standards, very thorough with instructions. It is not an easy A, you have to work very hard for it, but if you want advice and guidance he will provide it with a smile. I would recommend this class for people who care about their education.
His lectures are so long that he doesn't finished and then you are behind schedule, He doesn't stay with his syllabus. He gives out so much readings. (four per class) Midterm and final are difficult. However he is very kind.
Here's the truth about Dr. Lim's class. If you like to miss class and not participate you will fail. If you show up on time consistently and understand the main points of the chapters you will be ok. I would not classily this course as hard, but it does take effort. All of the people complaining about him just didn't put in the effort.
This is honestly one of the best classes I've taken at CSULA. He cares about his students, communicates very well by weekly emails, and overall has a good class. To the person complaining about too much assignments, it's bc they're irresponsible. It's easy to keep track of your grade and the weekly quizzes are not bad bc if you read it'll b easy.
His online class covers too much stuff. He wants everyone to submit 3 essay, 6 portfolio entries and two quiz in every two weeks..
Dr. Lim is professional and thorough. He is an excellent teacher. He will help you get through your papers; he is very patient. He will take timeout of class to answer your question. When asked his personal opinions, he always responds, What would the theory say?" Awesome!!!
Better than McLendon.
For an online class, this course was absolutely ridiculous. Constantly changing assignment dates and the inordinate amount of assignments made it difficult to work ahead (especially with other classes), and yet the Professor somehow expected top tier content from the essays you have to submit often.
Professor Lims online class taught me a lot of Politics and AG. There are usually 2 quizzes per week and a mini essay every module. The amount of work stressed me out but it wasnt impossible to keep up with. He gives good feedback from mini essays and allows work to be turned in late. I enjoyed his course. Anticipate to work hard in this class.
The class is not impossible, it is just a lot of work. There are about two quizzes per week, including a mini essay. Powerpoint for every module + reading the class book (online and cheap). It is manageable and very interesting class. the midterms are usually questions asked in the quizzes.
Blown away by the sheer amount of assignments for a lower division online course.. Lectures to read, books to read, articles to read, multiple quizzes per week, multiple essays per week, discussions to participate in, constant texts and emails reminding you that you STILL have more due by tomorrow even though you JUST finished another assignment..
Professor Lims POLS AND AG class is one of those classes that you have to work hard at to get the A. Yes, he has 2-3 quizzes due per week and yes, he assigns a mini essay for every module but they help a lot to fully understand what is being taught. He leaves comments on quizzes and essays and it really helps. I learned A LOT!
He is very unconsidered of students who have 4 or more classes which other assignments. It would have been very helpful to be given assignments and readings more than 48 hours in advance during the school week. Many of us have jobs, I myself have 3 jobs. Be prepared to lose lots of sleep at night and to never be ahead of assignments.
If you are planning to take Lim, good luck. Be prepared to attend a class every day since the REEF questions are a huge part of your grade, do the quizzes, essays and other assignments. You need the book! Lim is not considerate of timing and will notify you 2 days before the deadline. Final Essay is hard; can help your grade or drop your grade.
Very easy class if you read the textbook. Reading the textbook is mandatory! He gives 2 quizzes every week, mostly true or false question and multiple choice questions. If you read the assigned reading, the quizzes will be really easy. He gives great lectures and his passionate about what hes teaching. I highly recommend taking Professor Lin!!
Not understanding given covid-19 I wouldn't take him online again maybe he's different in person but online he didn't know how to keep students engaged, one of those professors that goes on and on, to the point where you just get lost.
My most difficult class because of the never-ending amount of work. Uses his own textbook which is a straight-forward, but you HAVE to read and take massive amounts of notes if you want to pass. He's very strict about deadlines even during the pandemic, and class was not interactive so his lectures were boring. Doesn't always take Q's during class.
Avoid if you can. So much work.
Easiest class I've taken. He cares about the "good faith" you put in your work rather than anything else. I would take him again if I could, a very chill guy. The only annoying thing is you gotta pay for that iclicker thingy.
This class requires a lot of work to get a good grade. It was also apparent that some agenda was being pushed. The reading material is very one sided. I'm not sure how first year students are supposed to think critically when all the material in the class is looking at the issue from a Marxist perspective.
Dr. Lim is the Beyonce to CSULA's Jay-Z. Lim's an excellent Ivy League-tier academic, CSULA's an aimlessly aging hodgepodge: Part feel-good poverty amelioration program, part abandoned DMV building. How they keep him I have no idea. I hope it has something to do with the money because he is unhyperbolically amazing. Def got my tuition's worth.
I enjoyed the PS GE course last semester. The assignments were a breeze from the start and focused on 1-2 good novel(s) mostly. I'm proficient at writing so the writing assig. he gave weekly weren't hard for me, but if you dislike essays then I would suggest a more lenient course. He took attention to give real feedback on papers which = big plus.
I took his asynchronous class and there was a lot of homework, average of 3-4 assignments each week. He sent us an email before we started to warn us that this class is difficult. If you don't enjoy writing, I wouldn't take this class. He gives great feedback. His grading isn't tough but you have to show that you put "good faith effort" for an A.
I took his asynchronous class, and he gave a warning about the amount of work you would have. While there is a lot of homework papers you have to write, he isn't a tough grader and provides good feedback.
The content is interesting - that makes it bearable. Get ready to read close to 30+ pages weekly. It's simple if you do the reading. It will really tell you if you should pursue a career in the field. Good intro class.
Lim is by far the best pols professor at CSULA. Attendance is not mandatory, but his lectures are incredibly insightful & help in completing HW. Skimmed the readings & passed w/ 100.64% It Makes the material easy to understand. If you have good writing skills, this class is definitely for you. Lim is the best fr. Love the man.
The class was asynchronous and hard. He gives you a warning about how much work you'll be doing and that you should drop the class if you can't keep up with the work. You'd be reading the book, writing an essay, doing quizzes, and a worksheet EVERY week. He's not too tough of a grader but will dock you if your Turnitin score was higher than 10%.
Professor gives too much work. It is difficult to stay on track with his class and also understand what you're learning on top of taking 3/4 other courses. Attendance is mandatory in order to earn attendance points. He is a tough grader. He is a good lecturer, the topics were interesting, but the work load makes it unbearable.
Lim will give most points (i.e., 9/10 or 10/10) if he sees a clear effort on the homework. Uses iClickr and his own textbook. Have to write a few essays assigned on a Wednesday due Friday. The final essay is 30% of the grade and graded harshly. Weekly quizzes and offers EC on writing prompts if you understand the concepts well or write a lot.
Getting anything higher than a C. Every day lectures and quizzes were fine, but the final was very hard. Takes 35% of the grade. Even if you follow all the directions for the prompt, you are most likely guaranteed any grade that is not above 50% on the final. In the end, you don't have any chance of getting a good grade at all or any above a B+.
Professor Tim was definitely a tough grader when it came to exams. However, his class assignments were self explanatory. You are REQUIRED to attend class as he does use iClicker to keep track of attendance and participation. Overall, I believe professor Tim is just passionate about his job.I actually enjoyed his lectures, they were interactive.
He's a good lecturer, and the content was interesting. You will get most points if you put good faith effort into the writing assignments. Grading consists of writing assignments, Canvas quizzes, iClickr polls, and the final essay. The final essay is graded very harshly. You MUST attend class for iClickr polls. Tip: He does check if you use AI.
didn't give good feedback on essay ,instead degrades students work or in my case say its hard to believe i can write a good paper the say we will look at it again and never respond regarding a grade for that paper which could have really helped me. Lectures are boring but easy. unclear requirements for essay mainly final. rude to students.
The assignments themselves easy, read 1 chapter & take a quiz, rinse repeat. However, this professor is very paranoid. He accused me & multiple others of using Ai, even after proof no one used Ai he still kept accusing. Beware, this professor cares more for his obsession with Ai & accusations of using it rather than properly grading & teaching.
HES SO ODD HE WROTE A BOOK N WE HAVE TO READ IT AND DO WRITTING ASSIGNMENTS OBVISOULSY HES BIASED!!!!!!! N ACCUSING PEOPLE OF USING AI LIKE ???? JUST BC IT WASNT ACCURATE BY THE BOOK BC HE WROTE IT
There was many writing assignments with tedious or confusing instructions. He will have you sign that you did not use AI at the end of every writing assignment and if you use AI, you must explain what you used it for. If you use AI at all, you will get a 0. Tests and quizzes were every week
