Super hard for an entry course, Prof is a nice guy but all over the place, only the front row can hear him (he refuses to wear a mic), Very speedy through really tough course material. Would not recommend!
In my opinion, this professor is very bright and is passionate about his field. Unfortunately, this does not translate when it comes to organizing and teaching a class. He seems consistently distracted, and has difficulty helping students make sense of what is expected of them. I would not recommend people to take his classes, if it can be helped.
He really love phonetics and is very excited about little things, which is nice going into a class like this. Seems to enjoy teaching the course, and I found him helpful in class at explaining things. Is good at rewording concepts if you don't understand it. It seems like he wants his students to do well. I enjoy the class and prof. Would recommend
Very excited about the subject, especially phonetics and is quite interesting. Forgets to emphasize the important things that will be highly tested on and are more difficult to do. Also, covers more than the necessary material and therefore tests are more difficult.
Even though he is a linguistics professor it seems like he hates his own voice because he refuses to wear a mic! I don't go to class because I cannot hear him or understand the concepts he goes over. He is a really bad prof. Avoid him if possible. Also he tells useless jokes.
He is passionate about phonetics but not very helpful at all. The first midterm had an average of 58% which goes to show how prepared we were. I think it is his first time teaching this course, so I don't expect him to be perfect, but this is the first class where I've ever had a mark below a B+. I am not used to scoring 50% on a midterm.
Very passionate about phonetics - but struggles to translate his knowledge into teachable information. Low class averages, almost impossible to do well. I can see him getting better as he teaches but right now it is a frustrating class because of his lack of teaching ability/experience.
This prof is all over the place and needs to slow down, when the class is quiet he just moves forward and does not allow students time to process. Also I felt very unprepared for types of questions that would be on the second mid term.
He is a good prof. But, he needs to slow down when explaining things. I can tell most students don't have a clue as to what is going on. He should also use a mic because I'm sure only the first few rows are able to hear him.
Absolutely worst prof I have ever had. At all costs avoid this class.
Very nice prof. Attend class and basically goes through example questions that will be on the final. Some concepts are a bit challenging to understand in class, but when you go over them on your own they make sense. Great prof!
He is super willing to help out students and answer questions. He is also really passionate about linguistics, which makes it more interesting. His lectures basically consist of him going over examples which are very similar to questions on the tests, which is nice.
To be honest, you can not show up to any class self learn and just go to tutorial sessions that are set up to pass this class. I swear I don't know how many times I fell asleep or ended up on my phone
Professor is very enthusiastic about what he teaches, but it is obvious he is inexperienced in teaching this course. Tests are ridiculously hard for a 101 class and the example questions/test preps were nothing like the actual midterm/finals. I thought I was in a 2/300 level course. Just studying on your own was much better. Avoid much as possible.
He is a really good prof. He tells students what is going to be on the exams and goes through numerous examples to help the students understand. I encourage taking this class as the exams are very similar to the midterms.
Very passionate about what he teaches, but doesn't quite articulate it in ways that are understandable. It's clear that this is his first semester teaching and I'm sure he will do nothing but improve. If you like physics, take this class. The material was interesting but hard to grasp. He did try to make it interactive though, which helped a lot.
This prof was obviously an amateur. For a course that is supposedly "easy" - our class average was around 66%. He has great knowledge of the material, however struggles in teaching it. That said, he is a nice guy and is more than happy to provide extra help to students who want it. All in all - I would recommend steering clear of this prof
This professor was awesome! He actually likes what he teaches and is really good at explaining concepts. The material is easy and he makes it even easier, people complaining at it being hard probably didn't listen during class and are still in the high school mentality of "everything should be easy and I shouldn't have to work at all."
I thought he was a great professor. He is very animated in class and is very helpful when you ask questions. He was sometimes disorganized, but for the most part pretty good. I found his exams extremely easy if you did the practice ones(which are pretty much the exact same) and studied. Overall the worst part was the material, he was great.
Avoid AT ALL COSTS. He is very knowledgable - but AWFUL at actually teaching. His exams were nearly impossible and our averages on exams were in the 40's (not curved). If you can at all, avoid taking this class with him. He actually made me hate linguistics.
Very disorganized. Refused to wear a mic so only the front few rows could hear him speak. He also mumbled a lot. Avoid taking a class with him.
Although I struggled with this class, I found him to be helpful in a one on one situation. He was willing to give you photocopies of your exams to study from for future tests.
Easy A. Good guy
Really boring course in my opinion, its very easy and a great engineering elective. he really tries to make it fun and enjoyable and at the same time he tells his student what would be a fair exam question and what wouldn't. the practice exams are identical to the midterms and finals too so this class is a definite easy A.
Practice exams are a very good indication what the midterms will look like. But course material itself is not indicative of what the practice exams will look like and thus what the midterm will look like. Left out huge chunks of course in tests and of course chose to focus on the hardest parts stuff he likes best: phonetics. Class averages: cd
He's enthusiastic but disorganized. We had quizzes and assignments every Friday and they were online and open book so there was never any pressure to study. He is late for class and takes weeks to mark assignments. The final is worth 44% and right now the entire class is panicking about it. I would stay away from this class, he taught me nothing.
Dr. Mills is super enthusiastic about his subject. Although the material wasn't super interesting I never dreaded class. It was all pretty straightforward and he posts practice exams and all the notes are online.
The class was extremely disorganized. This is one of the classes where you're better off teaching yourself the content of the textbook because he is not helpful. Mandatory study participation which was the most boring thing I have ever done. Unless you are passionate about scientific linguistics, I do not recommend.
Mills made LING 101 extremely easy. Textbook was unnecessary because he would only test on in class material that was very clear. His exams are easy and straight foreword, do the practice exams and you will do great. And he had an online forum that he would answer to in a timely manner. Many of my classmates had a similar experience.
I truely liked Tim Mills as a prof. He had the online videos posted which I liked cause you could rewatch them for the midterms and finals. He was very enthusiastic about the material and always answered back to emails fast. The only thing that was annoying was the ling experiment participation, as they had no experiments towards the end of the sem
Mills is a cool lecturer! He posts the lectures online and reviews them on Monday, so you really only need to go to one class a week (Wed or Thurs - where he goes over practice problems). The material is easy, the class is definitely a GPA booster if you put in a bit of effort. Beware - his practice exams differ slightly from the actual exams.
Too many places to look. Can this class be clear and to the point with 1 source?! I find this course confusing and all over the place. Smart teacher but not clear. As mentioned before, look forward to teaching yourself this info. Google helped sometimes!
It's clear he's passionate, but he has a hard time communicating the information clearly in class. However, he posts a LOT of helpful videos and docs on eclass so its not so bad if you're good at teaching yourself. No midterm, just a bunch of little assignments and quizzes. He's a smart but disorganized, so it's a little unclear what to know
Don't bother buying the textbook for his 101 class. Its so expensive. If you go to class, you don't need it to do well. He gives a lot of extra materials for practice. He is quite an awkward guy, but he clearly loves linguistics.
Lectures are viewed online ON YOUR OWN TIME. In class he reviews, plus group activity. If you watch the videos, going to class is almost worthless.
Extremely enthusiastic about his class. Encourages questions and participation but never forces you to contribute if you don't feel comfortable doing so. Lectures are online and you watch a head of time. In class time is used to further explain and give examples. In class time is very helpful to clarify any concepts you might not understand.
He wasn't too bad, nothing great though. The course was all online so all lectures, quizzes and homework was done online. He could be a bit hard to reach at times through email or the forums. He doesn't give much feedback on the assignments. All exams were pretty easy. The assignments weren't time consuming, although transcriptions were a pain.
Really great prof at explaining the content. Can go on tangents that are pretty interesting in themselves. Exams were easy if you understand the content. Posted all notes, vocabulary, and even in class notes online.
Timothy give great notes to the point where you do not need the text book to do well to pass at all. He is always willing to meet and is is very knowledgeable in his field. however he does get off topic alot during class which make his lessons hard to follow along. Additionally he entertains many off topic questions and wastes alot of lecture time.
Tim was great he is so passionate about what he teaches which makes it very easy to pay attention and be excited as well. He does tend to get side tracked by peoples questions that are not exactly relevant, which is annoying. Exams are very straight forward and fair, the course was an easy A.
He loves what he is teaching and is passionate about his work, which makes his lectures enjoyable, and comical. He will go on tangents too. He posts everything online, making anything you want to know very accessible. He is funny, and always wears great shirts. He goes into deep detail if you need it, and is one of my favourite teachers
I took the online version of Ling 101. There are 6 quizzes worth a total of 55% that you take on eclass every two weeks. The quizzes are very simple since you can use any resources you want while writing them. There is no midterm and only a final that is worth 45% which can be written anywhere with an invigilator . Overall very easy course.
He is helpful and respectful. This course is not hard, if you go to class then you will get a higher mark.
Regardless of your learning style, you can almost guarantee that Tim will have some sort of resource available that will work for you - videos, written summaries, and practice quizzes were all there. The concepts are fairly easy so if you put in the time to review what he's prepared, a good grade is pretty achievable.
Overall I enjoyed taking class from Tim however I did not sign up for an online course and thats exactly how this course was taught. All the material was on eclass (videos, notes, quizzes) which made it super easy to get an A. Went to class a couple times and nothing was taught, he just answered homework questions.
Online: LING 205 is frustrating. Mills is unreachable by email. There are 5 transcription assignments and 4 "labs". Assignments are pointless - way too time consuming and unhelpful to learning, no relevance to final. 5 online quizzes, and a final. Still had FIVE things unmarked by the time of final. You will pass, but the frustration is real
A lot of class material to memorize and must practice questions a lot.
Tim is very passionate about linguistics and it shows in his teaching. He can be a little awkward but it makes him funny. Since he posts lecture videos, attendance really is optional. There is no midterm (for LING101) so the only thing you really need to worry about throughout the semester are the quizzes which are relatively fair.
I took ling 101 as an arts elective, and it was a good class. If you show up, do the quizzes and put a little effort you are able to do well. 5 quizzes each worth 9%, no midterm and a final worth 45%. Professor Mills gives lots of material for the quizzes and final. He is an amazing prof, would recommend.
Tim is an amazing prof whose passion for linguistics shows in every lecture. This class is essentially like an online class. He uses class time to go over practice questions and answer questions. The lecture content is posted as videos on Eclass. Notes are provided ( really thorough). No midterm only a final (45%) & 6 online quizzes worth 9% each.
This class is an easy A IF you put in some effort and do practice questions. I made the mistake of not doing any. When it came to the quizzes I would do them without doing any practice questions and my marks showed it. For the final, I did all the practice questions and managed to get 98%. It was fair & resembled the practice finals he posts.
This was a blended lecture (watched videos before lectures and then discussed in class). This was good because I could watch the videos and if I understood it, I didn't go to lecture but if I needed extra help I would go. Marks were based on research participation (easy), 10 ish quizzes on eclass (therefore open book), and the final. Easy A.
This class was done as "half online" so he posts all of the lectures as videos and you have 5 or 6 online tests. I went to three classes total and did well. Tests are all open book other than the final and Tim is just an angel sooo ya would recommend
Professor Mills is completely unprofessional when it comes to responding to students. I had an online class with him and we could use an invigilator form to change the time of our exam. I wanted to move mine due to a job interview he knew about. He didn't respond to my request for 2 weeks and when I tried to contact him again still no response.
If English is not your first language this can be a difficult course esp when it comes to transcribing (eg A as ae or schwa). The lecture is pretty much like an online class.. didn't really like it since there's very minimal instructor-teaching happening; class times are 95% spent collaborating with your seatmates. Marking takes ages kinda annoying
Really the most fantastic class to take if you need to lighten your courseload while still completing credits. All the lectures are videos on eClass so you can get the info whenever is convenient to you, and all the quizzes are open book & online so if you fall behind youre not out of luck. No midterms & final is a breeze if you practice!!
LING 101 with Mills was the easiest A I have ever received. Lecture material is all online, so going to class is completely optional (although some of the questions on the final were straight out of lecture activities). Exams are open book, and requirements little effort to get good marks. I got 97% on the final and only studied the night before.
Honestly not sure how this is an Easy A, would respond to emails 2-3 weeks later and marking took what felt like ages, very unprofessional. Open book quizzes yes, but its sort of like a second language so if you struggle with that I would not recommend. Ling is hard lol I went based off everyones ratings saying easy A and boy was I wrong
easy A but needs more time for practice. He's one of the most considerate profs I've ever known. Best ARTS course so far!
I did not have him for this course, but my professor used all his prerecorded lectures and notes. Very helpful. Would take another class with him. Also I find him kinda sexy. Not super relevant, but helps when you're listening to him lecture.
Idk who the heck is on here dissing Tim... Had him for ling 101 and 205 and i still love him with all my heart. Also gotta love those online courses
His lecture style is a bit weird. You take lectures online and the in-class time is spent answering questions and having discussions. If that's not your thing, take this class only because a majority of your grade is open book quizzes, safe in the knowledge that if you miss class, the lecture is online and only 15 minutes long.
He is such a caring person and generally wants his students to do well. He had a flipped classroom. Sometimes the lectures were unproductive. With him, other students make or break the lectures. I had a know it all in mine so it was not as intriguing
Mills is an angel. His practice finals are literal replicates of his actual final, but with different words and sentences, so if you do them, you're set. No midterm, just online quizzes you can do with friends which are worth a big chunk. I found his notes bad since they were so wordy and long, but they have everything you need.
He's a very good prof, but I found his course to be very hard for me even though english is my first language.
Do not take ling101 as an easy A. If its a credit course, Tim is probably the best prof to try for an A. He's very wordy, confusing, easily distracted and hard to follow but you're graded on open book quizzes and a final. He runs a flipped class: lectures based off of videos posted to eclass, actually being in lecture was unhelpful.
They might as well make this class online. ALL of his lectures are online, you must WATCH the videos on your own time and in class he answers "questions" but really just rants about the phonetics of the english language. His class had 100 students, and not even 20 students attend because its so pointless. Online quizzes every week and a 45% final.
Doesnt answer questions until after assignment due dates.
I had him for Ling 101, he was great. This class, he was awful. It is an online class and he barely replies to his emails and checks in with his class. It was not great and really frustrating. Also, he marks fairly easy but there are just a lot of assignments and quizzes that are time-consuming.
Nice guy, horrible prof. Avoid if at all possible. Took this as an elective and regret it. He told us to use his practice finals as guides for the final. They were nothing similar. Left out part of the chart needed to answer the question and didnt realize until 1.5 hours into the exam. Basically is an online course, which I did not sign up for.
He is a good person but a lousy prof. His classes were the worst I ever had in my life.
Professor Mills was very helpful and welcoming. The class was very learning-on-your-own style with the Zoom meetings as a time to ask for help or questions. One thing I very much appreciated was the option to ask questions in Zoom meetings anonymously instead of speaking in front of the class. This was completely my favourite class this semester.
Tim's AMAZING!!! There's five tests (no exam) and a final term paper. He's an easy grader, had an optional weekly live seminar to ask questions. Very personable and caring and easy grader, my average was 93% which was an A. The only sad part is he only teachers 101, 102 and 205. If you can, take his class!!
He was a kind and accommodating prof, but the class lacked structure and organization. The "notes" he provided were not helpful or informative, so get ready to make all of your own notes from the textbook. He does provide lots of practice quizzes and questions. But overall I would have preferred for him to actually teach us.
He is so knowledgeable about phonetics/current research and I've learned a lot! Some course content is tricky and sometimes he doesn't lecture for the whole class so you have to learn some content yourself. No final exam so the course is easy to do well in! Highly recommend cause he's great. Sometimes goes on rants but not a big issue for learning
Overall fantastic prof! Very knowledgeable and provides lots of options for learning the content (lectures, videos, notes, etc.). No final exam, which was nice, but quiz questions can be a little tricky and require a good understanding of the material. We got to do multiple unique assignments that required further exploration of the topics.
He's a super knowledgeable professor, very funny, and always up to change a grade if you have a good reason. He also loves questions and is super approachable, and available outside of class if needed. He is all in all super understanding and friendly.
Nice guy and passionate about linguistics but his in class lectures were very condensed and fast-paced. So really didn't learn much from him and had to rely on the textbook. Also he is so unaccessible outside of the classroom so good luck getting in touch with him about assignments or grading discrepancies.
He is so passionate about Linguistics that he forgets that everyone taking his class knows nothing about linguistics. Pros: lets you out early, has low-class load, wears funny shirts, and has a lot of notes/videos. Cons: class is unnecessarily condensed, runs through everything fast, don't retain/learn much, notes are confusing (mostly examples).
If ur a very independent no BS learner take this class, you'll get an A if you follow his videos If u need support and depend on strong lectures, don't take this class. Lectures are a total waste of time he's just rambling. With that being said his online videos are great but I don't remember signing up for an online class. Easy online quizzes tho!
Tim is very passionate but does not allocate much of his class time to the important material. You have to learn a bunch yourself. Quizzes are openbook and fairly doable, although the first one was pretty difficult. There are 3 lab assignments instead of midterms/final. You get options of which labs you do and the last option was the most fun!
Honestly, I agree more with some of the older reviews for Tim. He is very passionate about linguistics, but communicating his ideas is not always clear. The lab assignments are beyond course content, take up a lot of time, and his rubric is not very detailed. Also, you can only get a good grade on them if you do more than what is asked.
Nice guy but lectures are useless. Be prepared to teach yourself the entire course bc going to class is just wasting time and him answering people's stupid questions. If you do good learning on your own you'll do great bc each open book quiz is 12% but you have to know your stuff and the final is 34% - all written.
Although class sounds easy with open exams and no finals, if you did not take Ling 101 recently, you are screwed. Terribly boring lectures that make zero sense. This stuff is my passion, but he made me lose brain cells in this course and lose interest fast. Good luck with him since he is the only prof who teaches this course.
Tim is a lovely man who knows a lot about linguistics, but he should not be teaching. He is very unclear both in person and in his recorded lectures. He relies heavily on the textbook which is a tougher read. He marks labs and assignments out of 15 from a vague rubric, meaning if you lose one or two points that changes your letter grade.
Amazing guy. I understand why other people have said that he rambles, but I personally learned well from him and his rambling helped me understand the content. He's such a sweet man and is very approachable and funny. He also teaches this class online, so he has the entire class's worth of content in eclass. He's my favourite professor for sure.
Tim was decent prof. He's very knowledgeable about linguistics so he can answer your questions well, but he covers topics very fast and isn't too thorough in his lectures. Quizzes were usually around 10 questions and practice tests were provided that were the exact format as the real tests.
Fine teacher, tests are fair, but he does not value his students. If you want a professor that replies to your emails or takes into account your concerns, look elsewhere.
does not answer emails what so ever, and you are better off not attending and reading the whole textbook
Would not respond to student emails AT ALL (and I really mean this). Classes were disorganized and challenging to follow so I heavily relied on the textbook. Released grades for quizzes/assignments were severely delayed which was confusing because the TA did all the grading and the prof just had to release them? I would avoid if possible.
Seems like a nice guy but lectures did not help me at all with understanding the content, and I had to teach myself everything with the textbook. The quizzes included content that was not possible/extremely difficult to answer based on course content alone (unless you have a science background maybe). Very difficult to get into contact with.
The lectures were unclear, and I had to rely heavily on the textbook to understand the content. The labs and assignments were also tricky, with a vague grading rubric. However, unstuck ai was a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
Horrible professor. Unable to get in contact with him, does not release test marks in a timely manner and his lectures are very unclear. Prepare to do a lot of reading and work if you are taking this course. Despite it being intro to linguistics he speaks as if everyone is on the same page as him. Do not recommend!!!
Terrible prof avoid at all costs. Completely gave up on communicating with students and the posted lecture videos were completely useless. You're better off just self studying. Almost all the quizzes had a problem with them. He somehow does less than the bare minimum for this class and also refuses to listen to student feedback for course content.
For a 100-level class, this should be illegal! Horrible professor, never responds to emails, does not care about students, the tests and final felt like he wanted you to fail. Extremely hard and particular marking, I had to argue with him on multiple occasions. Using old lecture videos, he doesn't even know what's in them anymore.
i really enjoyed his class, and not because im just good at linguistics (im not). online/openbook quizzes for all 5 units, worth a combined total of 60%, easy if you read the modules and watch his videos, posts lots of practice too if you need. 6% for research participation (can do a 3-4 of online surveys). kind of an odd guy but so entertaining.
Tim mills made constant grading errors and never answered his email. His quizzes are out of 20 marks but are only 6-8 questions long. If you must take a class with him good luck to you, even if you ask him in person questions he will try to avoid answering or give you a watered down response.
The final is much tougher than the quizzes. In my term the average on the final as 52%
Doesn't teach in-class(so skip or regret showing up) but all notes + videos of him explaining stuff is posted. Don't buy the textbook because you'll never be tested on it. Easy class and concepts, make sure to keep up with the lessons and final is all short answer so make sure you study. Don't buy the study guide either it's not needed to do well.
