Great guy, it really pays to go to his office hours. he makes the class interesting and it helps that he's funny and cute. definitly recommend taking a class with him, he's awesome!!!
his ethics course is tough, he likes to throw wierd ethicists in but explains stuff really well, he's cute and funny and he makes ethics really fun
not only is mr.nulty hot and extremley nice, but hes absolutley with out a doubt the best teacher that i have ever had at UMASS... hes very clear when explaining things in class and if theres something that you dont get hes always available at his office. Amazing =)
Tim Nulty is hot. beyond that he explains the material well, but expects reading between every class and sometimes will get frustrated with classes that dont read often. Aside from that he injects the lectures with fun and humerous examples and knows how to keep the material interesting.
Professor Nulty is probably the most demanding teacher in the philosophy department. He expects a lot, but the classes themselves are pretty cool. on a side note, he's cute
Okay, it's pretty clear that Nulty is absolutely adorable. And intelligient. And witty. And overall really nice. And married. Haa. Seriously though, prob one of the best classes I've taken at UMD. He is demanding but it's totally worth it,if you aren't the slacker type. You will NOT pass if you're just taking this to get credits.

he is a really good looking guy and probably one of the bets teachers that i have ever had. hes course is a little tough so you cant slack but its all well wroth it
This guy is awesome! One of the best professor's I have ever had. I have 6 classes a day MWF, and his class is my last. The only way I can get through, is because I look forward to his ethics class. He's a cool dude, and loves to help. You will be forced to think differently. Girls like him, so there are always hotties in his class.
This guy is so hot! He's really helpful and he gives study guides for each week. His tests are just over the study guides and there's only 2 papers, 2 tests and 2 quizzes during the class. Really easy.
Professor Nulty is amazing. He's funny, interesting, and makes Ethics understandable. He doesn't let you slack off, but he's always willing to help. He really encourages people to come to see him for help on papers, midterm questions, etc. If you must take a PHL class, or want to--make sure it's with Nulty! (Plus...let's face it. He's teh hotness)
Great teacher! It was hard work but I definitely learned a lot in his class because he makes everything so clear. Definitely recommend taking a class with him.
Nulty is the man, he is incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to philosophy and whatnot, he is freaking hard, slightly pompous and hilarious, if you are a jackass, he will single you out and make you feel stupid.
SO so so HOT! Worth your time & grade.
Nulty makes ethics interesting and funny. He will challenge your moral beliefs, but you learn from it. Its a hard class but worth it.
He is extremely hot and it sometimes makes it hard to focus but besides that he is an outstanding professor. The class is difficult but he really helps you out. Cheers for Nulty!!!
Nulty expects a lot from his students, as you should expect a lot from him. You are not paying to be educated in a dumbed down, insulting, 4th grade kind of way. If you seriously pursue the readings, and are willing to accept the idea that your unexamined views of morality are probably mistaken, you will find this class to be truly life changing.
Awesome, funny and nice, is really into the material, had a night class that was going to be canceled because the original professor dropped out but Nulty didn't want it to be canceled, so he took over, great guy
hot! hot! hot!
STUD and an awesome professor!
I had Nulty for my first ethics class and LOVED it. He shared my impatience for slackers and bad writers. He is very helpful with papers because he wants you to improve. Take advantage of office hours and put forth a decent amount of effort. He won't hold your hand/baby you into getting an A.
Loved this class. It was pretty hard when i started. If you read the text and you understand what he says in class, you'll do fine. Going to his offic hours is a plus. It helps you, and it shows your willing to put the effort in. The class gets you thinking.. I learned a lot.
I don't understand how there are so many possitive comments here! I'm a responsible student who put TONS of effort into this class and still struggled! Don't be fooled by Nulty's smiles and light humor in class, he's not here to be your friend. Take advantage of his offer to read your paper during his office hours! They will save you!
THIS IS NOT A BLOW OFF CLASS!!Excellent teacher. Extremely helpful and great lectures. If you don't do the reading or put in the work you will fail. If you're interested in philosophy take this class. Its worth the work.
Tim Nulty is perhaps the greatest professor to walk to halls of UMD. He's funny, knows his stuff, and he'll blow your mind.
This class was one of the best I have ever taken at UMD. He knew what he was talking about and made it interesting. The notes are a big deal because the papers and exams are basically your notes! Its tough but worth it! Great class!
one of my fav classes!
As he wrote on the board the first day of class, "Nulty is a pain in the ass". But this class was extremely interesting! This is definitely one of the best courses at UMD. He made me rethink my major for sure. I highly recommend taking it. Not an easy A; attendance, notes, and readings are very important. Pay attention and you'll do fine!
Honestly , one of the best professors i have ever had. He rewards hard work and roots out the lazy students. He explains things so that everyone can understand them. Riveting class , he turned me from a devout catholic , to an atheist...
This class was great, but if you don't show up you will miss something important related to a test or paper. His office hours are very useful, so go to them if you can. I learned a lot from this class and he treats you like an adult, so tough luck if you think this class is a breeze.
LOVED THIS CLASS! NOT AN EASY ONE...Nulty is an excelent professor! You can totally see your $$ worth when you face a prof like this! Lots of notes, and please take them, that will save you! I worked very hard, never missed any class, but had a lot of trouble with the material, got a C+. So study hard, will definately not be an easy one, but totall
Nulty's class is the real deal. Probably the best professor I've had.
I love him. SO much. You do have to have a brain in his classroom though. It is college, folks.
not crazy about him. yeah, he's goodlooking but he plays favorites and thinks he's funny when sometimes he's just an ****. He expects way too much out of his students and thinks that his class is the only one his students are taking. Too much work ... wish someone put a comment like this up before i took his class!
Fantastic teacher, he's very smart, and you will actually learn something from the class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he gives pop quizzes on the reading he assigns, which are important to your grade. Sometimes drops subtle hints, like reminding you to read the class before. Just read, and you will get an A in the class.
In reading these comments, I am a tad bummed I had him for an on-line class, which I absolutely do not recommend! He demanded a lot in the discussions, yet he left little feedback to let us know if we were answering the questions correctly. I feel like this course consumed my semester. In the end, I'm not quite sure what I learned.
Awesome teacher. Always answers students' questions well. Really really knows his stuff. Even if the subject is dry, he makes it funny and entertaining. Class was really difficult, with two long papers and two essay exams, but he always encouraged people to go to his office hours, which I highly recommend. Very helpful.
although he might be the hottest teacher on this campus , he is HARD ! you MUST read in order to even know anything about this course, he gives alot of work and his tests are hard. you deffinatly have to study. but he is so awesome nad interesting and VERY helpful if you need help with anything. i reccomend him, youll learn alot and have fun!
Awesome Prof! so helpful. have to go to class and read every night. tests are out of the random but clear if you read and pay attention. TAKE NOTES. exams are based on notes and he helps if you have questions.
Professor Nulty looks specifically attractive when wearing glasses. In all possible worlds.
Extremely difficult professor, but well worth it if you can pass his classes. He weeds out the lazy students in the beginning. He only wants people who are serious. You have to do the readings EVERY night, usually 2 or 3 times over in order to pass his random quizzes. Midterm and final are HARD but def. possible to get an A if you study hard enough
Professor Nulty is by far the best professor at UMD I have had. If you are interested in Philosophy, take every class you can with him. His classes are challenging and you have to work hard for good grades but you will learn so much. The guy is so brilliant and knows everything about philosophy.
I am a business student that's not the strongest in philosophy. Was able to get a B in this class. Def a challenge but didn't have to exert myself too much for the B. Easily one of the best professors I have ever had at UMD, so interesting. This is everything a college course SHOULD be wish UMD had more of this.
This class is crazy hard. You have to read or you won't pass. His sarcasm is a little bit annoying and not cool sometimes. The final and midterm consist of a lot of studying and reading so don't take this class if you're lazy on reading. Overall cute guy sometimes
Nulty should clone himself and teach every class at UMD. Smart, funny, helpful, cares about students. Type of prof. who challenges people and can change your whole life perspective. And for those of you who complain about the reading, you shouldn't be in college if you are going to moan about having to do work to pass a class. seriously ridiculous.
VERY hard class. Would not recommend taking an online class with this prof! What he posts is very difficult to understanding and he does not help when you have questions. I had a 4.0 GPA before this class.
You will have to read a lot, and considering that the material isn't easy-obviously, its philosophy, you will have to invest time into your homework. Honestly, if you read and actually TRY than the class wont be difficult. If you're worried about having to read for a college level course you should probably ask yourself why you're in college.
Learned SO much in this class! Do a little bit of reading and look at Nulty's comments/study notes.(he basically gives you the answers for the exam ahead of time) Best online course I've taken so far.
This class was fantastic! It gave me a solid foundation for future classes! I literally passed 3 subsequent philosophy classes because of the rock solid foundation I got in this class! Awesome professor! Pay attention and it will make your entire academic career that much easier. Many classes (not just philosophy) are based on these principles! )
Not only is he an awesome dude in general, but the guy knows his stuff! Dr. Nulty is great at teaching the subject, integrating an awesome sense of humor and weird but funny examples in his lectures. It helped me learn and he does well at giving good feedback and making sure you get the material. A+
Definitely NOT an easy grader. His exams are extremely DIFFICULT. Good professor but for a 101 class, he shouldn't expect perfection from his students. It should be an introduction class for people with zero knowledge prior to this class who NEED guidance. I am not saying he should baby the student but instead acknowledge when a student is trying
Prof. Nulty gives a good introduction to college philosophy, but is limited by the scope of his syllabus and unlikely to give outside reading even if students show interest. Fair grader and absolutely hilarious!
Quite literally the best teacher I've ever had. I wish he taught more classes at Clark
Amazing professor. Without a doubt my all time favorite class
I'm an art student so I took his class as one of my mandatory classes that I need to graduate but after having him, I would love to have him again! He actually gets the class to laugh and goes through a really interesting subject with clarity and ease. Not the class to take if you just want an 'easy A' but its amazing and easy if you actually care!
Professor Nulty is an amazing professor and gives such clear and awesome lectures, but the quizzes and tests he gives are super hard. As long as you read and go to class you should do well, and he is very open to meeting outside of class to clarify anything. It's a difficult class, but I think his lectures make it worth it.
A lot of reading. A quiz every week. For a 101 class, he expects a lot from students.
Nulty is one of the best lecturers on campus. His class is interesting and thought provoking, and he is unbelievably intelligent. Attendance doesn't directly effect grades, but miss class and be prepared to bomb your weekly quizzes. I found his grading to be inconsistent, but there's no little to no written homework & he drops the lowest quiz grade
A complete and utter nut job! Would not release my grades to me and then tried failing me on an exam because he "didn't like the adjectives I chose." I ended up having to withdraw from his class and I still need to report him to the dean of students. He has been the worst professor I've encountered at UMassD.
Professor Nulty was a very difficult teacher at first but he is a genuine guy. he makes you work for the work and its becomes really easy to do after a while. If you do not meet with him for help or show up to classes its going to be difficult but i highly recommend this class. Most engaging class I've ever been in!
I withdrew from his class because I was interested in actually learning ethics/arguments as a skill rather than just memorizing copious amounts of information to SEEM smart. There are no class discussions and he never checks to see if you actually understand the information before he's moving on. Just get out, there are better professors to have.
By far the worst Professor Ive ever had. Please do yourself a favor and choose a different class. He doesnt even Thoroughly explain the material he is teaching he expects you to already know the material somehow. Definitely dont take this class if you dont like reading cause you wont pass.
Amazing professor. If you actually have any interest in philosophy he will have a burning heart to help you succeed in the course. But he is really hard on people that take the easy way out like cheating or taking answers from other students. But he really burns for his craft even though he can sometimes not realize the stuff is complex.
Professor with an elevated sense of self-importance; he believes his way and word is essential to students, even though his lectures are almost verbatim the same thing as the readings in the book. For good grades on the exam, you are expected to memorize the readings and copy the chapters down. No room for independent thought; ironic for philo
I took this philosophy course to learn and gain knowledge. However, this professor is relies on loads of difficult reading, to which he unpacks in one class, and quickly moves on to the next. My biggest disappointment is that there is no room for independent thought. Ironic. The class is about memorization not about learning.
Nulty is an excellent Professor. He is passionate in what he does and he creates interesting lectures that left me wanting to hear more. The class is going to be difficult at first, but will get easier as you go on. Sure, he makes the exams difficult, but he is one of the most fair professors I have ever had.
Professor Nulty is overall a really good guy. He is very willing to help you understand the material if you are struggling, and expects excellence in analysis. It is imperative that you do the class reading, otherwise you will be lost, and will not do well on exams. He is very straight forward in grading and what he expects from his students.
Will not let you pass the class if you don't come to class, despite his lectures being word-for-word what is written in the readings. If you go to Clark, don't take his class. Despite not going to class, I did the readings and answered the exams exactly the same as someone else who did go to class and our grades where different.
Best professor Ive had. Not a class to take if youre looking for an easy A, but if you put in the work (and read!) youll do well. His lectures are entertaining, almost like a conversation. He really wants you to learn deeply; he doesnt teach shallow, simplified stuff. Hes passionate about the material. Usually 3 tests and an essay (7 pages)
If you get stuck in a class with him the only way to pass it is to go to his office hours and listen in class. He gives us the exam questions a week before and expects us to come to office hours. Please don't skip on class, the readings and avail office hours. It was not a hard class, just memorization and a bit of effort.
Lectures are very important, make sure you go. Prof. is very easy to understand and gives a lot of analogies for it to make sense for you. Keeps the topic interesting. Tough grader but gives feedback instead of just labeling wrong.
Took during COVID. 4 tests worth 20% of grade each. Expects essays out of discussion posts and grades super tough. You wont do well if you dont read bc everything that is on tests is direct from the book and not online. He's a nice guy but grades way too hard for a class that is an elective for some just learning PHL. If you can find something else
This class is based on 4 exams and weekly discussion boards. His exams are 5 questions to be answered with 4-6 paragraphs and you have a week. My first exam was 4800 words and my second was 5500. You have to get the book and do detailed analysis for every writing and discussion board. Use outline questions, answer them, use them for exams!!!
I didn't choose to take this class, it was chosen by my advisor. i did not like this class at all. the professor gave way too much work thinking we have no life outside of school. he gave us a week do to everything. we had weekly discussion board posts with 4 exams. those exams are 5 questions with 4-6 paragraphs per question. i do not recommend.
This class was awful! I took in the middle of COVID. He only graded us based off exams which were unreasonably hard for a graduation requirement class. He is also incredibly difficult to get in touch with outside of class. Avoid this class and professor at all costs there are much easier people that teach it. Just wait a semester to get your credit
Don't get me wrong - he's a difficult professor. Expects a lot of his students. That being said, if you actually put in the effort and show interest, he will want you to succeed. He's tough and strict, but isn't the type of teacher that wants his students to fail. Don't take if you're not willing to put in the effort. Test & homework heavy.
Tim must think he's an award winning Harvard philosopher. He is in fact a mid level intellect who thinks his understanding of philosophy supersedes the ability of the average moron. Gave me a bad grade because I didn't use quotes from the book I couldn't get my hands on (Used class materials to the fullest). He then told me he was being generous.
I started out hating this course but after reaching out to Prof. Nulty, he was willing to help me understand the course material and check my test answers. The content in the course is very interesting but there is a lot of reading and writing required for the course. He's always willing to help his students and his explanations are helpful.
Super tough grader for everything. When he grades he just tells you whats wrong but doesn't explain how to fix it. Expects everyone to go to online office hours, which is unreasonable especially for online students. Wish I withdrew from this class when I could've.
This can be a difficult class if you are not willing to do your part. Professor Nulty is completely open to helping you understand the material, but he will not babysit you like some other professors do. If you need help, you must reach out and explain. He is one of the most intelligent professors I have come across and always willing to help.
Easily one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Also one of the toughest graders with a weird grading system. If you don't put a ton of work and detail into your exams and discussion posts, you'll get a B or B- AT BEST. Wasn't accommodating to people if they missed exams, so if you miss one you automatically get a 0. Attendance isn't taken.
Absolutely terrible I withdrew from the class a good way through. 14 page papers were required to get an A. Just stay away from this guy who thinks he's way smarter than everyone else.
Test heavy with only open response questions. Expectations are high, tough grader. Accessable for office hours. Test questions are given ahead of time. Lectures are interesting and if you miss them you are behind. Class content is directly taken from the reading books. Learned a lot and changed my perspective on the world.
Amazing! Great lectures, makes time for students, he will even do meditation with you. He does have some drawbacks, he's a tough grader and the courses are paper/essay heavy. But, all exam questions are given 2 weeks in advance and he will personally check them and give advice. Take advantage of him and you will do well.
Lots of papers with research. High expectation.
WARNING: Extremely demanding. Every class is treated as it were a 400 level class. Only philosophy majors should attempt his class. Avoid him if you have a full-time job and family.
Content not that difficult; actually is interesting, but he managed to over-complicate and overwhelm. The student is expected to parrot theory in graded handwritten essays "in your own words." In "other words", you must "word" things "his way". If you understand the material, it doesn't matter. He will torture you if he doesn't like you. Period.
Just no. People all have their own ways of teaching but this is asinine. Lectures at times were interesting, I have to admit that much, for however aimless they were. And the grading? Have standards, fine. There are plenty of cool Professors who can be difficult and respectable. This is not that kind of Professor. "Torture" would be charitable.
Absolutely horrible
It was painful, but dang, I came out the other side better. Now I'm obsessed with Kafka, Dostoevsky and Camus. I took away one star simply for the mental anguish that accompanies his classes. If you want to be challenged, go. Philosophy isn't for everyone, therefore don't blame the teacher if what you learn or don't understand upsets you.
Philosophy is very interesting though Nulty made intro to ethics excruciatingly devastating. I met him for office hours at 8am once to get better clarification and understanding; he belittled me and i left crying. He is insensitive and lacks empathy. Dont take this guy. A challenge is encouraged in college, but this guy is absolutely terrible.
Honestly do not recommend his class. Why is he grading so hard? This is an INTRO Ethics course! His discussion posts are graded heavily, and he does the most.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. ALL YOU DO IS READ, TAKE NOTES, AND TAKE TESTS. YOU NEVER ANY OTHER HOMEWORK. VERY HARD TO BRING YOUR GRADE UP.
Take advantage of the resources he gives you. If you meet with him outside of class he will tutor you. His expectation is just that you read the book and participate in class, not big asks for a college student. His lectures are great and he is reasonable. He gives what will be on exams 2 weeks ahead of time. Also gives essay questions ahead oftime
Actually took PHL 110 Principle of Critical Thinking with Professor Nulty, but wasn't an option for review. There is a lot of good information about argument validity that will help you in some other classes. Class lectures really helped me understand the material better and Nulty was more than will to help during his office hours.
do not take him. you either will get a rlly good grade or fail. personally i had to drop
Now that I am a law student, I fully appreciate the pain this professor put me through. His closed book essay exams, which annoyed me to my core are now the standard by which I am graded for law school. The irony of my entire course grade in law being contingent on one essay exam for the semester is too rich. If you are a pre-law student, TAKE HIM.
Reading his reviews when picking out classes was extremely concerning but after having him as a professor it really isn't bad. He is textbook heavy and you do have to read and come to class if you want to pass. He tells you exactly what to expect there are no surprises at all. Gives 2 weeks before tests to study with the guide and will help.
I did not take PHL101, I took PHL 110 and PHL 350. Philosophy classes are never "easy" so if you are taking any philosophy class expecting an easy A, just don't even take it. Both classes I took with him were good if you tried. He is hilarious and makes class discussions engaging. Exams only, but it's not that bad. Def take his class
Definitely a hard man to understand; he's tough but he's not mean. He likes to emphasize on questions, so make sure to ask questions in that class especially when you are confused. But he's a pretty funny guy, he's relaxed and not super strict, he won't bother to hold your hand, but if you need help, he's more than willing to help.
You are expected to read a lot and take notes on it and then in lecture he goes over the reading and you can ask/talk about it with him in the class. For tests you just had to explain the person in the readings argument in your own words thoroughly. If you are confused he is very available to talk to offering tons of office hours.
He only grades quizzes and exams. Nothing ever makes sense. He just basically degrades us the entire class. He said he expects nothing better than C's.
You basically have to teach yourself through the textbook. He's not helfpul at all and kind of rude. I genuinely think if I had a different professor I would've got an A in the class.
Genuinely rude for no reason. Work is hard for no reason, it shouldn't be hard but he makes it hard. Lots of quizzes worth nothing and exams worth everything. Does not want students to excel. Talks to students like they are babies/very little respect for people/makes a fool out of students who do not understand. Would never take his class again.
Professor Nulty taught this course in a manner not appropriate to the level of difficulty expected and with student failure seemingly in mind. Course content topics were unverifiable and structured poorly in an irrelevant syllabus. Engagement was discouraged in a degrading manner. Not worth it if you already have a difficult course load.
Attendance is taken sometimes. Nulty is very knowledgable and structured in his teaching and provides thorough review before quizzes and exams. He is very responsive and is able to answer questions. If he sees you are putting the work in, he will equally put that same effort into helping you.
This professor is incredibly rude and dismissive of students. He barely teaches and when a student has a question about the topics he expresses disregard and mockery.
