he was good. very interesting. fair tests. no complaints
Great Prof. Structured the course really well- no tutorials for first 2 weeks, midterm on two separate days (multiple choice one day, written another day), non-cumulative exams. Fair marking.
Cool guy, really funny!
He's a very funny professor, but it drove me insane how he always went off on a tangent about somthing random. Another complaint I have is his allowance for absolutely stupid questions from students in the class, which always came from the same few students. As long as you attend every lecture and do the readings, you'll do well in this class.
Too much reading. Funny guy. Lecturing style unclear. Goes on tangents. Sarcastic humour that sometimes goes too far and makes you question whether or not he's kidding.
Hard tests. Some of the questions youd ask to yourself where did they come from. He said his tests are based on general things in the textbook. However he goes it specifics...his lecture style is not good starts to talk about random stuff. His wording on the exam is not easy to understand it may be awkward...alot of work as to be done in this class
Racine is a funny guy. When you talk to him in person he is a little intimidating. I loved his example videos in class they were entertaining. His tests are pretty fair, a little on a tough side. everything is scaled so it depends on the class. The paper will bump ur mark up, however midterms and finals you really need to study for. USE THE TEXT!:)
goes off topic during lecture. lecture extremely boring
Tim is a great prof and I loved his teaching style! He tells you things not in the book to make you critically think! Midterm was ok the final was harder and for the paper consult your TMs when unclear. He gives the essays for exams in advance so check with the TMs to make sure you do not miss anything and you will do well!
Tests are fair. I can't stand how he rants on about the same thing over and over.. He spent half our lecture reiterating criteria for our paper.. Lectures possibly waste of time.. And lectures notes are unclear.. Just read the textbook and you'll be fine
I didn't feel he went off topic. He is very nice, 1 midterm 1 paper 1 final. Paper was simple, 5 pgs on any child topic. I'd still recommend him to my friends, hes not bad.
Love his big chops and the irresistable curly hair
Course not quite what I expect, but test and paper fair and pretty easy. Prof pretty nice and spends lot of time on WebCT discussion site. Helpful guy. Good course.
This prof presents a lot of the information through a very narrow biased lense while claiming that he's being objective. That said, he does encourage students to critically examine everything. He's very helpful if you don't understand something, and the WebCT discussions are great!
The classes aren't mandatory (lectures were recorded) and as long as you study the lecture notes/textbook you'll get a good grade. I liked the videos in class and Tim pushes you to material in different ways than the text portrays.
Love the class i would another class if schedule permits Always answers questions and attentive to the needs of students and very competent in teaching ability, I had a good time learning about the various ideas and theories regarding child development and the factors that influence it.
Racine seems truly committed to students' success. Classes are engaging and he does encourage critical thinking, even if it's a little slanted to his own biases! Intelligent man, good teacher. I'm still undecided as to whether his is simply a biting sense of humour or if there may be a need for a bit of humility and grace...
Tim is a great Proff! Just do the readings & read his lecture notes and you will be fine...he does a great job explaining!
Nice prof. Very funny. Make sure you do the study questions before exams.
Overall a very nice prof. He gives big hints for the exam.
I've taken two classes with Tim now (Psych 250 - Developmental Psych & Psych 385 - Evolutionary Psych), and enjoyed them both immensely. He doesn't treat the students like children, but presents the information in a clear and engaging manner. One of my favourite profs, would highly recommend to anyone.
Tim is awesome! he is engaging, informative, very helpful. he is funny and makes class interesting. His exams are very fair and his study questions are a GREAT studying tool, not only b/c 3 of them will actually be on the exam but b/c they ALL manage to cover pretty much everything from the text. HIGHLY recommended prof!
Tim is a very friendly and approachable prof. I wasn't impressed witht the design of the class though. He also has a tendency to frame material through his own biases despite a constant denial of doing just this. Very nice guy, great if you're interested in developmental psyc, but not so great if you're not.
At 1st this class was "Evolutionary Psychology" & somehow turned into "Evolution & Psychology." I thought it'd be more of a developmental psyc class but there's more biological/evolutionary concepts than expected. Struggling with it a bit because this is not my forte & haven't encountered much "psych" yet, so hopefully it gets easier...
This is not a Psyc class!!!!! Very surprised at the content and found it hard to get through, found little relation to any psychological theories at all! Aside from that he is a very nice prof and the exam short answers are pulled straight from the study questions. He genuinely wants his students to do well. Recommended prof but not subject
Awesome Professor. The material was sometimes a little dry, but Tim has a way of adding humor to make it easier to choke down. That said, he isn't always the best at answering questions during class, so it may take several tries. Also has the best exams ever (not the easiest, but definitely the best).
Tim is an excellent prof- questions and dialogue are encouraged. His exams are not easy, but very fair. He wants to challenge his students to think outside the box, as such, those who do not like to be challenged may struggle with this course. Others, like me relish every class and do very well in it.
Very down to earth and humorous professor. Makes some of the more dull content enjoyable via silly puns and jokes. Only problem is that when you ask him a question, he'll sometimes go on a 10min rant answering what he THINKS you asked, which more often than not isn't what you asked at all.
Nice teacher. Doesnt answer questions well. Hard to understand his lectures, must do reading before class. Papers and text interesting but he made it dull in my opinion. Tests easier then I thought. Papers to open ended and then harshly marked.
His jokes are rude, crude & hilarious, but Tim is genuinely a nice & helpful guy. The papers weren't too difficult - just follow instructions/refer to text. Take really good notes & also do the readings to prep for exams to solidify the abstract concepts discussed. This wasn't much of a psyc course, but you won't mind as long as Tim teaches it.
Best prof ever!
Awesome professor! The material was difficult, but the exams and assignments were doable and reasonable. He really explained concepts well. First part of class is a bit confusing but it gets a lot better.
Awesome prof, very interested and a great lecturer. tests/assignments are easy if you read information given. Information is boring though and dense
Very humorous prof, tests have funny multiple choice questions. He genuinely wants you to do good, gives short answer questions that will be on exam. Material somewhat difficult, textbook was hard to read. Come to every class and stay for discussion!
Overall, it was a good class. just harder than other psych courses due to the content being not so psyhcological and more biological. I t didnt feel so mcuh like apsych class really. Tim wasa good teacher, i listened to all lectures online and helped a lot to understand better concepts. I reccomend to take this class if u like D bio aspect ofpsyc
Super funny, lots of video clips, engaging classes, discussion encouraged but he wouldn't draw it out if no one wanted to talk. By far one of my favourite profs in the psyc department, granted the nature of the course is geared towards more biological sciences this is a great option for those tired of memorization/fun fact history psyc courses.
This class is easy to pass and is quite enjoyable. Tim is an interesting professor, but his discussions seem to drag sometimes. Take good notes and attend class because he gives out Qs that may be on the exams. The textbook is required and easy to read. Use his lecture notes as a guide to studying text book material. Fair exams & he adds joke Qs.
Tim is an interesting professor and he is witty as well. He make jokes and makes the study topic interesting. His discussions veer off sometimes but is not interfering or anything. It is easy to pass this course. Make sure you go to the class and take notes, it's better to take a laptop along as this helps to keep up with Tim's pace.
This class was different than I thought it would be. It felt more like a biology/history class, talking about genes, history, scientific terms, etc, though I guess that comes with the heavy topic. Must attend lectures and do the readings to prep for the exams - they were a bit harder than I imagined.
I dont know what happened between now and 2014. His criticisms on psychology's history are alt-left and appear to be so, just to contradict the mainstream thoughts of the fields history. He appears new to teaching this course so hopefully he will get better in time.
He's funny, but his domain of teaching is evolutionary psychology. Lectures were brutal to sit through, but mandatory if you want a good grade. Exams require more than memorization, you need to know epistemologies and compare between different historiographies and perspectives. He scaled marks up since the class average was low.
Most of the course is based on lectures so go! He's actually a decent lecturer, but it's history so a bit boring. Assignments weren't too hard. This was his first time teaching the course so it was a bit bumpy. He scaled the exams which was nice. We didn't end up using the textbook for the 2nd half of the course which made me mad cause it was $$$$
For his first time teaching the course, he wasn't so bad. There is a lot of history in this course obviously most of the material in lectures is testable. Better to go than skip! Scaled midterm makes cause average was low and consequently made the final all based on lecture instead of textbook+lecture, which helped tons! Pretty funny dude too!
So glad I took 308 with Tim. Instead of presenting a historical timeline, he expects you to think critically about WHY history is presented the way it is. The last 20 mins of class is solely for Q&A! Don't listen to to the person below me, you WILL need the textbook for readings and to flesh out the lecture notes. Study hard, the tests aren't easy!
Getting a good mark in this class is doable IF you attend all the lectures and read the assigned articles before going to class. I recommend printing out the lecture slides too and following along with him as the material can be quite complex and hard to grasp the first time around. Gives short answer question for midterm/final in advance :)
Really nice guy! Though he rambles at times, really love his teaching style. Takes responsibility for poor exam marks, will remove questions if majority of the class chooses the wrong answer. Always available for extra help. Genuinely interested in the material, his passion really shows. Would recommend!
Timothy is respected and hilarious at the same time. He is completely fair and attentive to his students. His exams aren't hard too if you study the lecture notes well. Please take this class with him!
very funny, very smart (too smart) can talk about the topic for 3hrs but if you're not good at in-class note taking, I'd give this a miss. No offence to him, he's really nice but it's extremely difficult to study for exams with no textbook, and only vague lecture notes to go on. the two papers, I found personally difficult, but that's just me.
Tim is a nice, down-to-earth professor. He is sometimes confusing throughout his lecture, but does his best to amuse the class with his dad-like humour (he's quite hilarious). Content warning: his second paper can be triggering for some folks as it applies an evolutionary perspective for why there is violence in intimate partner relationships.
He is pretty knowledgeable. However, he spends way too much time talking about background information irrelevant to actual material. He tries and tends to be funny sometimes, but most of the time his lecture was not very engaging. After half of the semester, half class skipped the class and just read the assigned articles. This was more helpful.
Tim is really funny. No textbook, just articles (about 2 per lecture). Exams are based on lecture and readings but his slides are vague so you certainly need to take good notes. I found his exams hard as he tends to ramble a bit which makes it difficult to know what you actually need to know. Hard to study for.
Fun lecture ever!
Tim is extremely rude (he uses many F words in each of his classes). He seems confused most of the times, and his lectures are vague and barely comprehensible.
Awesome dude, my only criticism is to make key points more clear. I think it would be really helpful if he released a study guide close to exams that gave a general idea of what we need to know. I wasted a lot of time on things that were not tested because what was in the "key concepts" section could be easily misinterpreted on what to get from it
Pretty awesome prof, not sure how you would not like this guy. He knows his stuff, super smart and makes boring topics interesting. If you don't like swearing, then maybe his class is not for you. His exams are super easy, as long as you study. There are no trick questions.
Awesome prof!!!
Awesome and reasonable prof!! Readings and assignments might be hard to understand but the exams are easier than expected! He would take responsibility for the questions in the exam. Also love how he added a lot humours into the exam questions :D
Tim is so funny, and he's so smart that he cleverly builds jokes into something as boring as history of psych. The course itself is really dull but Tim brings it alive, his tests are also fair and he removes questions everyone did bad on. Would love to take this prof for a different subject.
Engaging lectures, really funny guy. Takes fair viewpoints on most theories relevant to Evolutionary Psychology. He's open to discussion, and makes you feel like your point counts. A true "5 stars" for me. Exams are fair, but not necessarily very easy.
He's got the dank memes but does he have the X Factor? YAAASSSS. His lectures are entertaining though be ready to read and think critically as not everything will be on the lecture slides. He's very passionate about the Evolutionary Psychology field, and his assignments are straight-forwarded. If you put in the effort you can easily get an A
Did an amazing job proving weekly articles, videos, and slides for remote learning. All assignments based off course materials (don't need to Google additional information or buy a textbook). If you work hard, you can do well on all the assignments, just take your time to watch his lectures - which are really funny! Appreciation for his dank memes!
He was a really nice prof! He's hilarious and he put a lot of memes which was great. For a course on evolutionary psych, he made the course really interesting! His lectures can be a lot, but that's just expected. This course was online (bc cover) but his lectures are all online so doing the assignments was a lot easier because you can go back
Tim Racine is the BEST professor I have ever had at SFU. Not only was he so considerate about a death in my family at the beginning of the semester, he remembered this till the end of the semester and offered to give me an extension when he noticed I missed the final submission! His lectures are also hilarious and turn the dryest topics fun.
Tim's a good prof. He's funny and super intelligent, but dang this course SUCKS. It's so dry and honestly I don't understand why its required. He's a good prof but his tutor markers are tough markers. He's a good dude and he's very passionate about what he teaches, so if I HAD to take 308 again, it would definitely be with him.
Tim's take on online classes was to turn the previously known in class multiple choice exams into take home, written answer exams with a word limit. The grading criteria was unclear, not to mention I was forced to have comparative grades imposed on me. I went to the TAs for feedback and one of them told me that they just had to keep the average low
Tim was hilarious and I loved his pre-lecture rambles and memes he includes. That being said the material is Bone Dry. It was so hard to keep up with listening to lectures and reading because the material is so dense and complex. Tim is very passionate and knowledgeable of the material. Definitely a 'Get Ready To Read' type of course.
fantastic prof! i loved his lectures -- he's really funny and makes lectures interesting. i'm not the most well-versed in philosophy (which is what this course is based on) but he explained stuff very well. it was a decent course: two participation papers, two take-home exams, and two critical evaluation essays. would totally take his class again!
Lectures were recorded and there were no in class assignments so attendance wasn't really necessary. Lectures themselves were boring as sometimes Tim would go off topic and ramble, but the slides themselves has all the information needed for assignments and exams (Qs given ahead of time). Material at times was dry but bearable.
Tim might be one of my favourite profs at SFU. He is hilarious and tries to make the content interesting. The course itself is pretty dry, so lectures are hard to sit through, but lectures are recorded and he provides pretty thorough lecture slides, so attendance isn't mandatory. Pretty easy to get a good grade because exam Q's are given in advance
I found Tim very good at making this dry course less boring. He acknowledges that it is not very interesting and does his best. For these reasons, he made this class a nice break from my other classes despite the complicated and dry content. The only thing is his lectures go off topic sometimes and rambles. Besides that I recommend this class.
best prof makes everything seem easy, good course structure
I'm not a psych major but I really enjoyed this class. The assignments were straight forward and as long as you tentatively listened to lecture and read the assigned articles, the exams were easy peasy. If you put in the effort, this class is an easy A. Dr. Racine is also pretty sarcastic so it made class more fun. Overall, great experience!
Tim is a wonderful prof, lectures are a bit bland although he tries to make it more fun with his jokes. Assignments were based on 2 reflections, 2 article summary, 2 take home exams. I despised writing the article summaries unless you're great at summarizing articles. Lots of articles to read.
Timothy is probably the most chill professor you will have. As this class was 3hrs long, there is a lot of material covered in the powerpoint slides (available on Canvas) but he does make jokes. His announcements are hilarious, and he loves the Toronto Raptors. 2 reflection assignments (easy), 2 article assignments (moderate), 2 exams (moderate).
One of the best professors I've had at SFU, if not the best. He is hilarious and makes what would be a boring course really entertaining and honestly quite stress free. Great teacher, even better human. The world would be a better place if everyone was like Tim! Highly highly highly recommend.
The content is extremely dry but Tim is very funny and down to earth, his presence alone makes me want to take any of his classes again. He is very transparent and happy to help you if you need clarification. We had 3 term papers (very open-ended which is nice but hard to know what he was looking for - really just depends on your TA) and no final.
Interesting prof I would say. I enjoyed the course bc I was interested in the material but I wouldn't take it with this prof again. His lectures are not engaging and are not professional whatsoever. I remember he would use unecessary curse words in his lectures of even emails/announcements to seem more friendly?
When I took this course, it was in person and we were graded on 3 papers and 2 small assignments. He's a funny guy but I wouldn't recommend taking classes with him. His lectures are so dry and he's not good at teaching his subject. Just don't take the course unless it's your last option.
He tries too hard to be funny and it makes it difficult to actually learn anything. There are no exams, courses are graded based on how well you can link random articles to course material rather than how well you understand the concepts, it's unfair for students who study hard but suck at writing. Worst prof I've seen in my entire student career.
One of my all time favourite profs! Rather than having us read and take exams on junk psych science, he provides a range of possible evolutionary approaches to psychology and just asks that we think critically about them. If you prefer exams and right answers you may not like his classes, but if you want to explore ideas you'll love them.
Too dense and dry. Yaps too much in lecture and what he says is not useful for the papers you have to write. Don't take this course if writing is not your strong suit and you prefer clear criteria because he will not give clear instructions
Wow, worst class ive taken in my undegrad. Hes unapproachable, keeps changing his office hours every week, WILL NOT help answer the questions you have, and ontop of that called our class guinnepigs cus hes still trynna figure out how to teach it?? im sorry what, my grade should not be compromised like this. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
No bcus why did he change his course evaluation to be 85% exams?????? IT FEELS LIKE DECIPHERING A PUZZLE yall pls dont take this course. evolutionary psychology is not something to be tested on like this. Was under the impression its assigments, etc. NOPE.
Exams are difficult if you do not study, with the new grading criteria you should put at least 1-2 weeks away to study and understand concepts before exams. They are very tricky, its not an easy course and definitely not a GPA booster, would not have taken it if I knew it was taught this way however it is what it is. Best to avoid, nice prof tho.
Tim was a super nice prof! The class was easy and exams were only on 3 modules each so they weren't too time consuming to study. I never went to the lectures or watched them and I got a B, so not bad. The content is extremely boring and I really don't know how it relates to psychology. We literally learned about bird wings and carnivores.
