Extra credit keeps everyone from a B
No Comments
extra credit was a DEFINITE plus, and his redistribution of points for the final
Very clear about stuff, room for error, because of the extra credit godsend.
Nice teahcer, but too much work, advice to take this class over the summer

He should never have volunteered to teach a class he knows nothing about. I felt completely robbed, I paid for this class and got a good grade, but learned nothing in the process. You ripped me off Tim Shaftel. You should be ashamed of yourself.
A lot of tidious work, the extra credit is well worth the work it will keep you in the runnings. The final can be worth the majority of your grade only if it help you, which is nice.
Awesome class. Lots of work because it is a weed out class. If you dont like this class, then you know the business school isnt for you.

It was a lot of work, but I thought the class was pretty good.
Great, great, great teacher! Very interesting and knowledgeable. He is tough, like all good teachers. Every point counts and mose assignments are terribly difficult, so work hard!
Shaftel is a great professor. If you attend class and do your daily homework, not only are you 'guaranteed' a B, you also will learn a lot. I major in biology and still found his text and lecture to be student-friendly.

tough class but great for learning
not a nice professor at all. Very stingy and self centered...treats his students with complete disrespect, until the day of evaluations..but knows how to make an otherwise borign class entertaining.especialyl with the cameras!
awesome teacher
awesome teacher.
Anyone who complains about this class is just plain old lazy. Yes, it is busy work, but its easy busy work. The HW (at least when I took it) was exactly like the examples in the book except they had different numbers. THe tests can be challenging
shaftel is a great teacher. even though it is a huge lecture class he is still able to present the material clearly
Shaftel was a great teacher, easy to understand and really knew his material. There's a lot of work in this class, but it's easy to get a good grade if you do it all. Lots of extra credit.
This guy was horrible, not funny and a jerk. Hardcore tool.
Shaftel is GREAT!! He is hard, but I loved his class!! It has been my fav. at KU
Knows what he's talking about. Good teacher, and you get little extras from his business experience. If you do and understand all the homework you will minimize your study time for tests.

So far my most favorite class ever taken at KU
Knew his stuff, relatively engaging.
Excellent teacher, but the class is difficult. Homework almost every night, but if you get that done, the tests will be easier. Take advantage of the extra credit. I went in the class knowing nothing about accounting, and now I know more than I should.
excellant
Excellent teacher. Class is hard so attend all lectures and labs, do your homework, DO THE EXTRA CREDIT, and study for the tests. You should be able to pull off at least a 'B' if not an "A".
Has no heart or soul.
He knows what he is talking about, but he's really full of himself. Also having to subscribe to the Wall Street Journal was dumb (NY Times = free). He must get a cut from them. What a waste of trees. Lastly his use of extra credit. He acts like he's a mighty god giving us poor peons extra credit.
Awesome teacher. Provides notes suppliment which is very helpful. HW gets very tedius, but is necessary. One of my favorite classes at KU. Get the Wall Street Journal and extra credit comes in bundles (can increase your grade by about 5%). Laid back guy. Has "fun" classes every so often, too.
Fairly difficult class, lot and lots of work. Pretty boring but he does a nice job of teaching the material, he is an excellent professor. You must attend nearly every class if you expect to do well.
A great professor with an amazing grasp of material and how to teach it.
Knew his stuff, but unreal -- makes his students buy HIS text book and the wall street journal? he makes a bundle off of all his students and is quite an ass! hard class!
This class burns me. It's incredibly difficult and valid excuses for missing class aren't accepted. TAs for this class are awesome, but Shaftel dances around the stage like he's delivering an infomercial. If I get an A, I'll be shocked.
Accounting isn't exactly a thrilling topic, but Shaftel is enthusiastic about it and knows what he is talking about. The Wall Street Journal is now free at KU, and Shaftel's book(s) make sense. Hard class, lots of work, attendance required. If you go, & do the work, you'll get an A. tons of E.C.
makes the subject easy. he is a great professor.
Expects a lot from you on tests. However, he offers a lot of extra credit and if you try in this class you will do fine.
Some of the material was irrelevant.
Good professor and teacher
He is a ****. No excuse for missing class
ask him why he's no longer a CFO?
Easy class, do the WSJ articles. The Paper is FREE now, really logical class and if you need help, it's available, no reason not to do well.
Good man I'd say, if you got questions ask em and if you want extra credit it's real easy as long as you REALLY want the extra credit

He is not available and I did not like his class. Then again I hate accounting, but I hated his class. I also now work for an accounting firm, so how's that for irony.
Very good teacher. Be sure to attend every class, pay attention, and take notes. He makes a semi-difficult course seem easy.

Hard grader, poor explainer, wants to make money off you by writing 3 books himself for the class
Shaftel is very cool and one of my favorites. His class was very clear and he made complicated things easy to understand.

There is so much work and the tests are HARD. To some this class up in few words...sucks at life.
To those who think this is a hard class, "don't hate the player, hate the game." All the homework really helps. As long as do go to classes, do the assignments, it's really not that hard at all.
Great professor, great course - basically as long as you keep up with work you can easily get an A.
He was a wonderful instructor! He cares about his students and wants to help them understand. Make sure to attend class, and keep up with the homework and you will easily get an A and understand accounting.
One of those professors that are great at teaching and at his subject. I think he went above and beyond to help the students out. He made class fun also. There is a lot of time required for the class though so if you don't want to dedicate the time don't take it. You have to keep up or you'll be lost. Keep up and it's easy as pie. Awesome class!!!
This clas was well taught and planned out very well. There is a lot of homework in this class, but if you stay on top of it, you will be just fine.
BOOO. This class sucked big time.
Lots of homework, decently tough class, but Shaftel's a good professor - you've just gotta' work pretty hard to pull a good grade.

i hate accounting. if you like numbers and being bored then take this class. he's a good teacher if you are intersted in that stuff. lots of homework. long tests.

Shaftel is an amazing professor. KU is lucky to have him.
hard class, awesome prof
great teacher! just make sure you attend class and get your homework done.
Lots and lots of busy work. If you grind it out, you'll do ok. If you don't, the tests probably won't save your grade.
great teacher, study hard
Good professor with lots of knowledge, he'll make you work hard
Great teacher, just makes you attend lectures AND labs, but he tells you everything you need to know in lecture or in his text. You must study for tests, but good grades are achievable.
kept the class really interesting. great class if you want to get something out of it. homework is a little bit difficult but tests are not hard to do well on if you study for them.
Shaftel is an AMAZING proffesor. He really knows his stuff and gets his point over to students well. The class as a whole is very difficult. This class is one that "weeds" out potential business school students, as long as you work hard and show up to EVERY lecture you should do fine in this class. He also gives a ton of extra credit so do that
MUST ATTEND CLASS!!! If you do not attend more than 2 classes then just drop out. Every single lecture is important. You have a quiz everyday which is worth around 5 points. Each point in that class can change your grade drastically. All the material is gone over in class or lab but again DO NOT SKIP EITHER. Very interesting material. Best class!
Knows his stuff, hard class but if you do everything your told and on time you will do well, BE SURE TO DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT YOU CAN!!!
every day we were given homework over a concept that wouldn't be discussed for another two class periods. The text book was useless when it came to homework, and the assignments taught you through a trial and error basis. However, he still graded without this in mind making it difficult to do well. most frustrating teacher i have had in college!
Very good professor. Cares a lot about what he teaches. Presents the material in a clear way that is applicable to daily use. Must go to class daily to get a good grade. Daily homework is taken up and daily quizzes are administered, both which add up to a fair portion of ones grade.
I LOVE SHAFTEL AND THIS CLASS!! it's definately a hard class but as long as you go to class and lab and read youll be fine. do ALL extra credit oppurtunities!!! take thsi class with SHAFTEL
As long as you do the homework and extra credit....it's a breeze!
whoever says this class is hard doesnt know what they are talking about, everything is in the books and he teaches very well, do the homework yourself and you will be fine, don't just copy a friend's or else you won't get the grade you want
Great teacher. Makes a very boring subject somewhat bearable. Gives out LOTS of extra credit, homework isn't hard if you went to class.
Professor Shaftel is great at what he does! He takes so much time to make sure people in his class are learning something, even if it is a class of one thousand students! Very organized and offers tons of extra credit. Work hard, go to class, and an A is totally attainable
Very good teacher
He knows his stuff!! It's hard, but if you do all the extra credit, attend each lecture and discussion, then you'll at least come out with a 'B' or better.
He knows his stuff!! It's hard, but if you do all the extra credit, attend each lecture and discussion, then you'll at least come out with a 'B' or better.
The man knows his stuff and loves it. His class is no walk in the park, but he does everything possible to help you be successful in his class. You just have to put the effort in!
Shaftel was a great teacher. His class was probably the most organized class I've ever been in, and I for one always do better in class when the teacher is well organized. The material isn't easy, as this is the first Accounting class a lot of people will take, but he really does care about you learning the material. You MUST go to class though.
A terrific professor. Clear. Great examples. Helps you understand the material and how it applies to real life. The class is hard, but help is available, and he has good TAs. Unfortunately, he is very unaccessible himself.
I absolutely loved him and this class! I had a really helpful TA, so that probably helped a lot too, but he knows what he's talking about and really really wants you to succeed in your future.
by far the best teacher at the university of kansas, I would take this class again in a heartbeat.
Go team!
He discriminates and is a bit prejudice in my opinion(perhaps i wasn't white) However, I don't know how he deals with "other students". I went to his office to ask questions regarding the test and rudely referred me to a TA. he didn't like me being there in the first place and didn't want to even listen to the questions and concerns I had.
He is not helpful at all. Does not like students to stop by...is very rude when they do and does not listen to them what-so-ever. The class as a whole is not too bad... just a lot of busy work. If you're taking it then it's probably required so you have no choice or way out of it! HA good luck!
Dont bother asking questions, he was a straight up jerk when I did. The only thing wrong with this class is there is about 1-2hrs. of busy work every night. It gets very boring. The tests are a bit tricky and arent like the study guides. My advice is get all the help from your TA and you should do fine.
He doesn't care one bit about the students and will lie to you. As long as you do the tedious amount of busy work and have a good relationship with your TA, you will do fine. Tests are ok, but if you study the practice and how to do the problems you will be successful.
Extremely well-run and organized class. Go to every class, because a bulk of the points are through homework/activity/quizzes. Class gets easier towards the end. Go in for help if needed, TAs are great. Take advantage of the extra credit! Anyone should do well if you do all of the required assignments and don't miss any classes.
Amazing teacher. Very well set up class. Great TA's. Incredible at explaining difficult concepts
Acct 200 with professor Shaftel is the perfect entry level business course at KU. If you can handle the workload and material then you're probably cut out for the program, otherwise it "weeds" you out as it should. Shaftel has thus far been my favorite professor at KU, he is an extremely intelligent business mind and cares about student sucess.
The class has a lot of work as long as you keep up with the homework and attend class everyday you will do fine. The tests are a lot like the old exams
One of the best teachers I have ever had. I wish I could take the class again just to hear his stories!
Shaftel is a horrible teacher, try anything to stay away from his lecture. Way too much homework, and you have to spend 2 hours on it.. and it's worth 1-3 pts. Test are incredibly difficult, seems like it should be a much higher then 200 level class. definitely weeds out the ones who shouldn't major in business.
Fabulous teacher. He makes you think, but teaches a very enjoyable class. Do yourself a favor and do the extra credit.
There is no way around it: 9:30 AM lectures, homework due every morning as well as a pop quiz at the beginning of class. That part was my least fav. cuz Wednesday night is bar night haha. Suggestions: Read every section in textbook, do all hw yourself (it will help u later on) and go to class. A 'B' is manageable if u put in the effort, but I gota
Best teacher I've ever had. Explains everything well. Go to class and try and you can get an A.
Amazing teacher, understands business well and how to teach it. HW is easy, quizes are easy, tests are a little more difficult but if you stay caught up youll be fine
Very clear and makes accounting a lot more fun.
His class was designed extremely well. He has been doing this for a long time and has designed the class in a way for students to learn well! Just make sure your debits equal your credits.
He knows business and teaches it well. In the beginning he is a bit harsh but lightens up later on. It is a tough class but it is very possible to do well if you try hard. Go to every lecture, go to help room if you need help. Lots of homework and lots of extra credit. You must give this class a lot of effort, don't be discouraged. Study for tests.
Shaftel knows his stuff, this class is tough, but with effort you'll do great. I learned a LOT and this class made me want to change my major to Accounting. Attend every lecture and take advantage of the extra credit, he gives it out like candy
Boring, but very useful. He tends to tell boring stories and he relies too much on Wall Street Journal.
Very good professor. Definately knows what hes talking about and picks excellent TA's. Class is mandatory to get a good grade.
Shaftel is a great teacher! His lectures are a little boring but they are definitely information dense. You need to go to class that's the bottom line. Shaftel's class is very well set up. The class isn't easy but with a bit of motivation and just enough brains you can will do well.
Tim Shaftel is a master of his art. He wrote the textbook, he'll give you an incredible set of notes (he also wrote) for you to fill in, and provides templates for your assignments. If you are willing to simply do the work, he sets you up for success. His TA's are extremely helpful. Take the class, it will set you up for life
It is literally a shame if you don't take accounting 200 from Shaftel. His class is well designed and fair. You learn so much from Shaftel, he really knows what he is doing. Shaftel is my favorite professor I have ever had or ever will have.
"go ahead and give yourself an extra credit point" :D
Class is hard. If you get behind, you gotta work your way back out. Shaftel is a phenomenal professor though. He knows his stuff, covers a lot, and his textbook is written very clearly by, well himself. Exams are really really hard, but he gives out extra credit like candy. 50+ EC points possible this semester.
This is one of those classes that is impossible if you are lazy, but so easy if you put some effort in it. Do every bit of extra credit possible, its EASY. The tests are relatively easy if you study well. Beware though, the final is SO HARD. As long as you do what youre supposed to do, you will get at least a B.
BEST CLASS I EVER TOOK! He really knows the material (he writes the textbook!) A lot of work is required but it is rewarding, I learned more in this class than I did combined my other 12 credits. Study hard for the tests and do all the extra credit and you will be golden!! I actually miss this class....
Shaftel for the win!
Shaftel and his army of TAs make this class very easy if you want it to be. All you have to do is keep up with the reading and the homework and they prepare you well for his tests. If you fall behind, expect to struggle most of the semester. If you're interested in accounting at all this class is really a lot of fun.
Great teacher - A lot of work, but if you keep up and do the extra credit, no reason not to get an A or B
Attendance is mandatory. There's an in-class quiz just about every single lecture. Do the homework, use the book/go to the accounting help room, and go to discussion. Always opportunities for easy extra credit.
I love Shaftel! This was my first semester at KU and his class really helped me get used to college. Make sure you go to all lectures, do all the extra credit, and talk to your TAs/ go to the help room. The TAs are awesome so become their friend and always ask for help!!
Very fun class! You learn valuable information! Do all homework and attend every class! Also do extra credit it really helps! Alot of free points
Shaftel is a really great teacher. His lectures are very clear and his tests are manageable. Do all the extra credit and take advantage of the help room when doing hw or other projects
I love Professor Shaftel. If you show up to class and lab, do all of the homework (which is very easy), and study a little for each test, you will get an A or B. I got an A and he sent me a letter congratulating me, which shows how much he cares about his students. I wish he taught other classes because he is the best professor I've had at KU.
I do not believe I have had a professor that offered so many extra credit points. Seriously, this man gives extra credit for having a good morning! Shaftel's class is the bee's knees.
Shaftel is an amazing teacher and is really good at explaining things. There is homework for every class but they are not bad. He gives so much extra credit!! I bet I will have at least 50 points of extra credit by time the semester ends! I recommend!
it is not so easy, but interesting
Shaftel is a class act. On of my all time favorites.
Go to class and lectures and you should get an A in the class. The TAs and Shaftel want you to do good and with all the extra credit make it hard not to do good; some of it is silly - but do it!
He is very dry, strict, not afraid to give a quiz in lecture or make the tests even harder if there is no participation. You will be found if you fall asleep during his lecture, there is a camera following him at all times because he doesn't stop moving(annoying).
Prof. Shaftel does a great job of being energetic with rather boring material. You will have plenty, and I mean PLENTY of opportunity to get extra credit in this class, I had about 30ish points. The material is challenging but if you dedicate enough time you will be fine. Showing up to class is essential, you can't get everything just from reading.
You won't have one on one time with Shaftel, but there are plenty of opportunities for help if you utilize the help room and special instruction sessions that are made available! The TAs are absolutely awesome.
Shaftel is an amazing teacher. He gives extra credit every class. You get extra credit for just showing up. But you need to attend his class to do well. If you miss class a lot then I suggest not taking the class.
I learned nothing in the lectures. He rambles. There is plenty of material in the text book however that I was able to teach myself most of the material. class is mandatory to turn in homework and pop quizzes. a butt-load of extra credit is given. tests are not easy. the final was horrid. Had an A in the class, after final had a C. disappointing.
Shaftel is an open minded teacher with a sense of humor. Tests are difficult and you will need to study for them, but there are SEVERAL opportunities for extra credit. Quite a bit of homework and reading, but they do not take long.
There are activity points for every lecture and lab so you have to show up in order to get points. I didn't pay much attention in lecture, but read the book and did pretty well. The lectures get kind of long but it isn't terrible.
If you are looking for a B, just show up and collect all the extra credit points possible. If you are looking for an A, study hard for the tests and expect sleepless nights.
Class was super boring, the content of the lectures is really dry but he does his best to make it interesting. The lecture hall is huge so you won't get any one on one time with the actual professor, but he seems like he actually cares about you.
Shaftel has a good sense of humor and definitely knows what he is talking about. He does what he can to make accounting relatable and understandable. He provided my class with a lot of extra credit opportunities. Class attendance is a must. Overall, I liked the class and I wouldn't mind taking it again.
Gives a lot of extra credit. You get points for standing up in class when he tells you to. The pop quizzes are easy, and most of the time he will go over the topic right before you take it. Tests arent too bad if you study.
Shaftel is a wonderful teacher who goes out of his way to show respect for students. His lectures are boring but they help you learn the material in a very clear way. Do the homework if you want to pass the class; it's impossible to get a hang of the material if you don't. The tests are difficult but fair. One of my favorite professors overall.
Just found out I earned an A. This class was tough and it requires you to study hard. I think the trick for this class is doing every extra credit (WSJ, Random stuff, Etc.) and not messing up quizzes. You want to not rely on the Final to help you, because it is hard and tough. Overall you won't earn an A unless you want it. Now start studying!
Shaftel is a good professor who seems to care about his students. Although the class is hard, he helps you out with plenty of extra credit. Because ACCT200 is required for most majors, I recommend that you take him as a professor. Go to class and keep up on homework and you'll easily get the grade you want.
Shaftel was a pretty good professor. He understands how boring accounting can be, so he tries to make his lectures interesting. The tests are pretty hard, and so is the final. Do all the extra credit possible!! It may seem tedious, but you can earn up to 50 extra credit points, which was the difference between a B and an A for me.
Shaftel is a great professor and makes a pretty boring topic engaging and adds humor. You can tell that he truly knows his stuff and applies real life situations to his lectures. Side Note: Do every single Extra Credit opportunity you are offered--even the weekly Wall Street Journal Articles. Without that, I would not have received an A.
Shaftel is a great professor. He is clear and cares about his students. He gives a ton of extra credit that you should take advantage of. Quizzes almost every lecture so be prepared.
Shaftel is a great person, but his lectures felt useless to me; they were very dry, overcomplicated, & lengthy. I'd zone out in class and then self learn w/ the textbook at home before completing homework. This is a class/lab you can't skip, because you do quizzes daily and gain activity points. DO all of the extra credit - it will save your grade.
Shafty will definitely will make you work for an A but his class is far from impossible, but it's not easy. I hated accounting before his class and now I actually like it. He is a great professor who gives a lot of extra credit and who seems genuinely concern about his student's success.
Very good teacher, lectures are very interesting and for the most part, easy to follow. Lots of extra credit is offered which is nice. Test reviews are given and if you study those and know how to do them, you will be fine on the tests. Quite a bit of homework, but never took very long. Liked how Shaftel made lectures interactive
You can tell Shaftel really cares about what he teaches but there isn't much background behind it. He uses the book he wrote and skims everything in my opinion. There is no depth in the course which is the opposite of how I learn, so this class was difficult for me. It also does not help the TA basically does everything for him besides lecture.
Prof Shaftel made each lecture very interesting, I thoroughly enjoyed coming to class every day. Attendance is definitely mandatory because there's quizzes every day. You will definitely have to work for an A but it is definitely do-able
Best Professor Ever! the class can be challenging but he gives you all the materials you need to succeed. He also give tons of extra credit so take advantage from day 1 ( you never know when youll need it)
Hard class but there are always TAs available who know what they are talking about. Important to attend lectures for participation and quiz points. There are 2 tests and a final. It is pretty clear what will be on the tests so if you put in the time you can get an A. Labs are very helpful. Shaftel doesn't do much in class but his textbook is good.
Most organized class I've ever had. He's a great guy who actually cares about the well being of his students. His class has a homework assignment every class but you'll find yourself knowing all the content when you go to study for the test, so its worth it. Great teacher as I said before. I have nothing but respect for Professor Shaftel.
he's a nice guy, the textbook is written by him and it's helpful and well-organized. Highly recommend reading it. He rushes a bit sometimes but the TAs are helpful so take advantage of help room hours. You'll get a minimum B as long a you do the homework and go to class.
Shaftel was an amazing professor. Accounting can be a really hard topic to understand but he makes everything clear and seem important. Theres quizzes or activities for points often so skipping class often can lead to failure. He made lectures interesting and engaging. Overall great professor.
Attendance is a main part of your grade. 5 points is given each day via quizzes or activities, and lecture is very content heavy and important. Both textbooks are required, one is the notes (which TA's check for a grade every few weeks) and the other has all of the homework assignments and templates. He is a nice and funny guy, difficult material.
In this class, the material is very learnable. If you show up to class, you will get a bunch of points along with learn the content well. Shaftel teaches the content very strongly and I find myself very prepared when studying. The course is self is rather difficult, but Shaftel gives a ton of extra credit. You can get nearly 60 points
Acct 200 is challenging but if you put in the work and do all the extra credit, you will easily get an A or B
Demanding class he provides all the information you need, Easy A or B , Final is rough though
200 isnt difficult if you go to class and pay attention. Homework help online. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!!!
do not skip any of his lectures or labs, There are so many extra credit points in this class and might come in hand at the end. Do all the homework and submit on time and do keep a track of all your points , because there are so many points that you get and the TA's kinda miss them. Do not take it if the class is offered in the morning.
Shaftels lectures are either very interesting or very boring, but hes a good professor who cares about his students. Theres a quiz almost everyday so know the material going into class and be ready for it. Do all of the extra credit because it will help you in the end. As long as you do the homework and go to class it shouldnt be too hard.
Overall, Professor Shaftel is great. His lectures are engaging and will be helpful outside of the class. There are several hours worth of homework due before every meeting as well as a nearly daily quiz. He wrote his own book, so be prepared to read the entire thing throughout the semester. It is helpful, but it's a lot of work.
Shaftel is a great professor. He is engaging and makes the material easy to understand. There is a lot of homework and a daily 5 point quiz (usually easy). TONS of extra credit so take advantage of it before you regret it. I wouldn't say it's an easy A but if you put in the effort it can be! His textbook is so helpful so definitely read it!
Professor Shaftel was a good professor to teach basic accounting. He cared about every student, even though he didn't meet every one individually. Shaftel truly wanted everybody to be able to pass the class, so he gave out extra credit all the time, and if you did it all, it helped your grade out a ton.
Lots of daily homework and daily quizzes are very often. Don't skip. An easy B if you just apply yourself. An A is very possible as long as you try hard and learn the material.
Professor Shaftel really cares about his students and clearly defines what you will be learning in lecture. Loves to hand out extra credit for student involvement. TAs really are there to help and have a great knowledge of what you need to know and do to succeed.
Shaftel really knows what he's doing. There are daily quizzes. Speak up during lecture and he will likely give you extra credit. This course picks up quickly so keep that in mind. Go to the help room or office hours! Maybe look into a tutor. If you're passing the class by the time of the final, your final exam score can replace a low test grade.
The class holds a quiz or activity everyday so if you miss, you won't get your points. Shaftel is a really entertaining professor and provides many opportunities to earn extra credit. He is always happy and cracking jokes which makes class better.
Shaftel is nice and usually in a great mood at 9 AM. If you attend the help room often to do your homework with help of TAs instead of copying you will find studying for the tests to be much easier. The textbook is a better learning resource than lecture, but you must attend for lots of in class points.
Great teacher and the sweetest person. Lots of homework but just stay on top of it and do the extra credit and youll be fine.
Not that he's not a nice guy or anything, lectures just go by way too fast for someone who has never taken accounting before. I don't think there was one class where I actually understood what was going on and had to learn every single thing outside of class. Be ready to put in a lot of effort if you have never taken an accounting class before.
Shaftel is a super nice guy and if you do the homework you should get a good grade. He gives so much extra credit so take advantage of it. You have to go to class because every day he gives either a quiz or activity worth points
If you go to class and work through the examples he gives, you'll do great. Extra credit is abundant, so take advantage of that too. Activities daily that count toward your grade. I have a feeling anyone who says that this class is too much work or too fast is a freshman who just hasn't figured out good time management skills yet. Overall, great.
Shaftel is okay. He has a lot of homework in the book, but he fails to provide example problems for some homework leaving you hanging by yourself, especially towards the end. He has a lot of pop quizzes, and the tests are extremely difficult, especially the multiple choice. He does care about the subject a lot, but you need to study to pass.
This class requires attendance because the professor throws pop quizzes or activities almost every single day, so don't skip any class or lab if it's not necessary. His tests are tough though, so you MUST read the textbook, or go to the help room. Professor Shaftel is a nice guy, he offers lots of extra credits to push your grade up, so do them.
He is really hard to understand, I feel like. He engages students in class but the material is not clear. There is a lot of homework and you must come to class if you want to pass.
Good class and knows the subject well, great teacher but still requires reading the text to understand the concepts fully. Trick to doing well in this class is keeping up with homework and DOING THE EXTRA CREDIT. ALL OF IT. actually though do it
I LOVED HIM! Tim was my favorite professor my freshman year. He is so nice, cares about his students, and gives away points. There is so much extra credit it's crazy. I would 100% recommend him to anyone.
Prof Shaftel is very sweet--he made an 8 am lecture interesting and it was very easy to stay awake! You have homework at least twice a week, but if you use the examples you will be able to get through them fine. Exams are difficult, but not impossible if you study for them.
One of the best professors I've ever had
Shaftel is one of the best professors I've had at KU. He tells interesting stories during lecture and has lots of real world experience. ACCT200 can be a hard topic to grasp, but he made it relatively easy. Just go to class and pay attention, he cares about his students.
Shaftel was a great teacher. A little off-putting at first, but he really grows on you throughout the semester. The man really knows what he's talking about and does a great job of explaining things thoroughly. TA's were super helpful too.
Shaftel is the best professor at KU. He makes sure that everyone knows what is going on but also pushes students to do their best. Could not be happier with how much I learned in this class.
Accounting is a hard subject that requires a lot of HW to help you understand the content. Writing this as a now senior accounting student, I still use the concepts I learned in 200 for almost every assignment I have and reference the note guide and textbook from that class frequently. Go to class, do homework, read and study.
Honestly, this class is a little tough but I dont hate it solely because of Shaftel. He rocks. If this was any other professor I would hate accounting but I actually like it because of him.
oh god what an awful experience , every single day is a snooze fest. only classes offered are morning, and i got stuck in the 8 am class. theres homework due every single class, and its all just busy work. Shaftel just rambles on for the whole period and you can barely even understand what hes saying. never again. also, ridiculous pop quizzes
This class requires you to work a lot. There is homework due for each class and you will have quizzes every morning. I had the 8 AM lecture and if it was any other professor I would have fallen asleep every day. He is great at engaging the class and offers a ton of extra credit throughout the semester. I enjoyed the overall class.
One of the best professors at KU. He is super smart and passionate about Accounting. Class is super engaging but even then some days can be boring. definitely a good intro class to the bus school.
I liked Shaftel, he is passionate for accounting and he cares about his students futures. The class itself is a LOT of work so you need to read the chapters and do the homework in order to understand the concepts. He gives a ton of extra credit- like a ton so take advantage of it.
Class could get boring but most of the time he was good at keeping my attention. Had quizzes almost every class period and homework due every class. He is very smart and respected. TAs were knowledgeable and lots of extra credit opportunities. Read the book to understand the material and what is going on in class. Tests are okay if you study.
Homework starts off very easy, and the first exam is very much based off of the homework. Homework assigned for every class day that has to be turned in in class, along with a possible quiz on random days. Final exam is tough and the study guide does not cover everything on there, homework is more useful to the final.
