Dr. Thomas is amazing. He keeps you interested and is very clear. He isn't a harsh grader, but he's fair. If you pay attention and due the reading you'll love the class. He has great teaching techniques!!
Dr. Thomas has been great this semester! An online quiz pretty much every week, two mid terms, a paper, project and the final. Really cares about his students and is flexible. Participate as much as u can. Just thought i'd add a rating here to let people know--take him!
I really like Dr. Thomas! He is very nice and always comes to class prepared. I never knew what to expect in his class, he liked to mix it up - I loved it! He gives many assignments which gives you a bunch of chances to do well. Take his class, he is an A++.
He is great - take his class!
The kind of professor you build your schedule around. Incredible person and professor. A true gem to the JMU Education program. 2 midterms, 2 papers, online quizzes weekly, discussion boards for half semester, and a fair amount of in class discussion. he does not straight lecture, he uses different styles to convey material. TAKE HIM!
Take him! He's really nice, gets to know students, and really cares about teaching. He gives you a lot of insight and is fair with grading and tests.
I didn't like the class but Tim is really helpful and cares a lot. The class was extremely boring but if you have to take it consider him. He tries really hard to keep everyone entertained but lectures go on and on. Grades are weird some worth 8% others worth 24%.
This was a great class! He gave a lot of assignments, but they were never very difficult because they mostly related to your own personal opinion or what you want to do in your classroom. This class was really great because he really cares about you, and wants you to have a good experience. Love Timbo!
Professor Thomas is the greatest professor I've had at JMU thus far. I went into his class not having a major and came out convinced that I wanted to be a teacher. He has a great passion for what he does and he wants his students to do well + hes funny which keeps things fun. His goal is to train the best teachers some our students will ever had wh
Great guy.
TTom takes you on a journey through the past and present conditions teachers face. It's a scary world, and he'll show you how to be an effective teacher and not just "a warm body". He really inspires you to be the best teacher you can. Loved him and the class, we became a solid unit. Absolutely recommend him!
Nice guy but assigns unreasonable amount of work. before we finished papers or projects he would keep assigning more. eventually i had like 5 papers and a project to do all at once. take someone else if you can, hes nice, but its not worth the amount of work he requires.
Dr. Thomas is awesome. Class is fun and interesting, and he really makes you want to teach. He's a great teacher, but he does assign an almost unreasonable amount of work; the work isn't always incredibly difficult though and I would recommend to anyone taking educ360 to take him
Worst prof i've ever had. i dont know what everyone is talking about but he has NO creativity, boring as all get out, and gives you tests straight from the book on material he no intention of mentioning anything about. save yourself and find someone else.
Yeah, this guy definitely ran out of steam with the creativity. The classes are pretty much driven by him encouraging students to complain about their experiences with education. Class "discussions" have nothing to do with what we read in the text. He's lazy and doesn't like it when you contradict or disagree with him. Take someone else.
dr thomas is absolutely amazing idk what everyone else is talking about! his class is interesting and engaging, definitely relateable. his online reading quizzes are easy (answers online, no joke 100%) presentations are totally informal you get 100 for doing it. midterm wasnt too bad though i didnt do as well as expected, take home final!
Dr. Thomas is my favorite teacher of all time, he is amazing. Not only was the professor amazing, but the class was really fun too. We had to write one major paper that is not hard to write at all, and we had to write two letters that we easy. ALso the project that we have to do to design a school is hard work, but really fun to do. take this class
Dr. Thomas is a great teacher! Class was a bit boring, and "lectures" had nothing to do with the book, but occasionally you do something interesting. You do tutoring in an elementary school, which was awesome. Take Thomas for an easy, fun class!
Dr. Thomas is great! Loved going to his class. Always made it interesting so it went by fast. A lot of group work and discussion.
Dr. Thomas is very passionate about teaching and really is a great professor. However, this class is challenging and be prepared to work for your grade. There are only two exams, the midterm and final. He assigns frequent assignments and expects you to come to class. He is a great guy, but this class was far more challenging than I had expected
Dr. Thomas is a super sweet guy and will give you an A for showing up and being friendly. Reading is not required and tests are based on class lectures where there is little info. Lectures are mostly interesting. He gives you the opportunity to be in a classroom so you can make sure you actually want to be a teacher. Would definitely take again!
Awesome guy; super funny and laid back. Always available to help out. The majority of class is spent doing groupwork and actvities. There is some reading, but the textbook is pretty interesting. Assigns a fair amount of short papers, but they aren't bad. Only 2 tests: a midterm and a final. I'd take his class again.
Dr. Thomas is wonderful and definitely one of my favorite professors that I've had at JMU! He takes the time to connect with all of his students. He teaches with a strong emphasis on learning, not on assessments. Dr. Thomas makes the material applicable and engaging, so that you will want to learn.
Dr. Thomas is very passionate about what he teaches. He genuinely cares about his students. He requires a lot of writing if you are not really into writing. However, I loved it. His lectures were simple and easy to follow. Because it was an online course, there was a lot of material packed in,but Test were a little challenging. I would take again!
Dr. Thomas is a solid choice for this class. He actually cares about his students and gets to know everyone. During the final, he brought bagels and orange juice for us to have. He used to be an English teacher so, when it comes to writing papers he is a little more particular.
TAKE HIM AT ALL MEANS! I've never had such a great professor like Dr. Thomas in my JMU career. He really shows you the purpose of teaching and how educators can change our society. PLUS HE GIVES A CURVE ON THE MAJOR TEST, SUPER FUNNY IN HIS OWN WAY AND CHARISMATIC! <3
Do not take if youre not an education major!!! This is not an easy A class, Dr. Thomas is a tough grader on the papers.
If you are an aspiring teacher and are really excited about that then this is an amazing class! It is not an easy A but if you're interested in education then the work is fun and completely valid and worth putting time into. He will call on people randomly so read the textbook (but if you answer wrong he doesn't make you feel bad about it, *magic*)
I love Dr. Thomas, he is one of the best professors I've had. Although, you aren't graded on much so if you do poorly on some things it is difficult to bring your grade back up. But he is a caring and understanding guy. 100% recommend.
He's a really nice guy, but kind of vague in his instruction. We're only graded by a few things and he's not exactly clear on what he's looking for. Flat out refused to tell us what was on the midterm. Again, really great environment, really great intro class, but harder then it needs to be.
As an aspiring educator, this class has been a great intro class into that world. Tim Thomas is an amazing professor, he is such a sweet guy and very knowledgeable about the American education system. Like other posts have said you aren't graded on much, but I haven't had any problems with that.
Dr Thomas cares about his students and is very flexible as long as you keep an open line of communication with him. The course material is pretty easy you just gotta do the work. 10/10 would recommend Dr. Thomas.
Dr T is AWESOME! He treats you as an equal and talks to you as friends. Most caring professor I ever had. He practices psychological safety in class where you participate a lot but learn that his classroom is a safe space. Classwork and homework are not hard and he is so understanding.
Dr. Thomas is a very kind man. He understands when things come up. His class was pointless though. You will learn nothing, and then he will put things on the exam that simply don't make sense. Will spend the ENTIRE course going over the "google norms" just all felt super pointless. Takes 12 years to grade anything, but you will get a good grade.
Sweet professor but consistently talked about same two topics the whole semester when it should've taken 2 classes. Don't learn much during class & graded by few papers & tests on things you've barely talked about in class. Gives feedback & ways to fix but still won't give 100 when you've fixed it. Waste of time but were able to talk w classmates
Dr. T is great! He's so nice and makes lectures really interesting. He teaches you a lot of hands-on and real-world info which will help you when you're a teacher. He's really honest about teaching and is good at relating to all of us. Super chill guy who makes teaching seem fun. Wish I'd had him in person but we're virtual until who knows w Covid.
He is such a kind and caring teacher. You learn a lot just through class discussions. Not a lot of assignment, about 3 papers and only midterm and final with small little projects. Not a hard class but you still learn, he is very understanding and helps you. He can be disorganized sometimes but he makes it up with his nicenesss.
Dr. T is a nice man but he's disorganized, got behind & was giving us assignments during exam week. If we didn't do them, he'd drop our grade a letter or 2. It was stressful to still be doing assignments when we should have been studying for all our exams. Never had a prof do that before cuz it's inconsiderate. He seemed nice until finals week.
One of the best professors ive had at JMU. He is so caring a personable, he makes you feel notices and appreciated in his class. He is a great person, a little unorganized but he doesn't give a lot of work so its not like you're missing assignments. A class I enjoyed going to.
Tim Thomas is a super nice professor but good god does he teach all over the place. I took him for an intro to education class where we talked a lot about privilege in the classroom during class, yet our out of class assignments were not related at all. Also the mid term and exam had nothing to do with what we talked about in class.
Tim was a very kind and lovely professor and genuinely showed he cared about his students. A LOT MORE ESSAYS THAN YOU WOULD THINK. His lectures were interesting but beware he loves to call on people if he sees you on his screen and we got off topic a lot. The midterm and final were brutal compared to lectures so make sure to read the textbook.
Prof Thomas will DEFINITELY inspire you to be the best teacher. He is VERY charismatic and passionate about educ. The class doesn't have many assignments; two 1 pg papers and a boring 4+ pg paper. APA format will be impossible. Midterm & final will have many q's on things you've never seen, but his personality makes up for it and makes it worth it.
Dr. Thomas is an amazing professor. He really pushes you to think about what we learned in class in our future careers and on exams.
Dr. Thomas truly creates an environment where you feel comfortable and safe throughout every lecture. He honestly cares about his students and aims to push them towards success. But he is so unorganized. Homework assignments that were due for the class weren't discussed until a month later. Lectures were a hit or miss as to what we'd cover.
Professor Thomas has been one of my favorite professors! He cares about his students and makes his classroom an environment that you feel comfortable to talk in. I would highly recommend taking his class!
Dr. Thomas was the most real and fun professor I had at JMU so far. He is super kind and genuinely wants to know about you as a person and how he can relate that to the material. Exams do not cover what we talk about in class, which is just privilege and civil rights. However, he makes up for it by being an open fan of Harry Styles!
Dr. Thomas is super sweet and understanding! Textbook readings are average length but a lot isn't even covered in class. He really makes you think about how to be a great teacher, and you write a few papers which he's lenient about when grading. You will go way off the syllabus schedule though and weekly prep-work emails can be super long and late.
Dr. Thomas was such a kind professor, I really enjoyed this semester taking this class! The content material can be kind of boring at times, but the class itself was very discussion-based and he was great about creating a safe and comfortable environment. The only 3 papers we did were super easy and there are timed quizzes on the textbook.
Dr. Thomas is a very caring professor who wants everyone to succeed. Attendance is mandatory, but if you're going to be absent just email him and he will be very understanding. Dr. Thomas is a very lenient grader, but it sometimes takes him a little while to grade assignments. Homework is posted weekly. Show up and participate and you will be fine.
Ok here is the deal with professor Thomas, he is a very nice man and the material is not hard, its just he doesn't teach the material we are tested on. He talked about these random topics that have nothing to do with our grade in the class. We have open note quizzes but other than that he doesn't interact with the book at all. Do not take
Overall great professor! Learned a lot and it wasn't too bad. The worst is weekly textbook reading quizzes that he gives you 5 minutes to take but they are open note. Be sure to read or else the class will be challenging.
He is a cool guy. You can only miss two days of class which sucks but the work is very easy. There are a few papers you'll have to write but he basically sets them up for you. i would definitely take him again.
Do not take Tim Thomas if you have another choice. Thinks that he is woke, but is only at a very surface level. Wants you to be emotionally vulnerable, but makes it uncomfortable and embarrassing. Problematic comments to queer and trans identities. You will not learn from this class, but you can probably get a good grade in his class anyway.
He is a great person and a good teacher, he is just a bit unorganized with dates but it's not that confusing if you just pay attention. He's a pretty easy grader.
I would definitely take Professor Thomas again. We had 5 minute quizzes throughout the week that literally came from the textbook. As long as you read, you will pass.
Prof Thomas is a great guy, just not the best teacher. The lectures don't match test content, and it feels like class is kind of a waste of time. The 5 minutes quizzes aren't bad, just make sure you take notes. You're mainly graded on twitter, 3/4 papers, quizzes, and the final project. A good option for EDUC 200, but could be better.
His lectures in class are mainly to spark interest and to start discussions. Your quizzes and tests are based on the textbook but the reading isn't too bad as long as you're doing it when he says to and stay on top of it! The papers are not too bad, those are more based on the class discussions. Bare minimum of requirements can get you an A.
This man is the sweetest professor ive had. He truly cares about all his students and makes an effort to get to know you. I want to take his class again because he was so fun to be around. if you have the opportunity, TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Dr. Thomas is a horrible practicum supervisor. Most of what he expects is outdated for modern classroom styles. He always claims that a TPS is the best method (which is reliable), but doesn't understand that a majority of students in the classroom today don't know how to write complete grammatically correct sentences.
he is a great guy, funny at times, but lectures seem like a waste of time, lots of random group discussion in class 5 minute quizzes once a week on a chapter of content very easy. It was an easy class but if you want to learn anything about education maybe find someone else. And he make you do lots of tweeting which is also very random.
Dr. Thomas is amazing, he is so welcoming and really makes class fun. He truly cares about his students and makes an effort to get to know every single one. I look forward to his class, and am sad it is ending!
If you are taking EDUC 200, try and get a different professor. Dr. Thomas is an amazing human being but simply a tough grader and assigns too many papers, quizzes, and tests. During a week of class, he assigned a paper, final project, and gave a final exam. He is understanding and is willing to work with you but be prepared to work your butt off.
He was a really nice guy and made an effort to get to know the students. The exams were open notes which were nice. A lot of the class is lectures and group discussions. Quizzes were based on readings and were also open notes. Overall I enjoyed the class.
such a kind professor who clearly cares about his students. he is very understanding of our schedules and will hear you out for extensions. he often makes jokes in class and creates an easygoing environment. you have to do a fair amout of textbook reading for quizzes, but his assignments are open note!
Dr. Thomas is a very nice guy, but honestly a bad professor. He made the classroom environment very welcoming and safe, but he was also disorganized, and unfortunately, it reflects poorly on him. I waited weeks to get back single page papers and test grades. I would say this class is easy, but just be prepared for late grading and disorganization.
Professor Thomas is a good professor. He is such a sweet guy, and is very inspirational and kind. He is a tough paper grader and there are lots of writing assignments. Overall a solid teacher!
He is a great teacher and very nice but assigns lots of homework. The tests and quizzes are open notes as well. He truly cares about each of his students.
Dr. Thomas is amazing. You can tell he truly cares about you and the course. All tests and exams are open note you just have to hand write them. He is also very goofy and always makes you laugh during his lectures.
Prof. Thomas is a very kind human being and a great teacher. He truly cares about education and forming his students into great teachers.
I loved Dr Thomas, even though his class was pretty boring. You have to read for small quizzes he gives once and a while, but thats it for homework. Participate and listen in class and do the readings and it will be a very easy A.
He truly cares about his students. Attendance is pretty much mandatory, missing more than a couple classes has a decent impact on your grade. The things we do in class sometimes feel random and he is a bit of a slow grader. Make sure to read the chapters and take notes bc the open note midterm and final are nearly impossible without good notes.
classes honestly seemed pointless but it's a pretty easy class as long as you put in effort. pop quizzes every so often about long chapters. really understanding professor and grades are based on the quizzes, single page papers, and 3 exams. pretty easy class and id def take again
Caring guy, but his teaching style did not go well with the boring and somewhat unnecessary class. He taught the content slowly and loved APA-style single-spaced papers. Only busy work was copying whole textbook chapters onto sheets of paper for the bi-weekly 5-minute quizzes. Midterm and final open note. Set yourself up well with good tablemates.
Dr. Thomas was really nice, but his class style and grading kind of bugged me. He never gave good feedback on papers or presentations and seems like he hates 100s on those things. The quizzes are easy and open note, as are the final and midterm. He cares about his students though and tries to engage the class as best he can. Great guy meh professor
Dr. Thomas is a great guy. It is clear that he is passionate about teaching
Could be worse, could be better. Very slow grader, chapter quiz almost every other week, but is open note. Class is mostly lecture and discussion, lots of discussion. Class discussions/topics most of the time do not relate to quizzes or papers. Overall nice knowledgeable professor.
Tim cares to get to know his students. Attendance is mandatory which is annoying bc sometimes you dont do anything in class and theres a reading quiz once a week but you can pretty much skim the textbook and get the general idea abt what the quiz will have. When the midterm was assigned idek what it was going to be on bc we dont do anything
Dr. Thomas is a very motivated teacher. He will take the time to help you out, and everything is open notes. His rubrics sometimes are not clear but overall it is not a difficult class. Many things in the class are pretty self explanatory, but take good notes!
Dr. Thomas is a very nice and caring professor who takes his time to get to know his students well. Attendance is mandatory for everyone as well. Tests and quizzes are open note, so take good notes and the quizzes are based on textbook readings. His rubrics are sometimes hard to understand, but just pay attention in class and you will be fine.
He is a kind professor. Need textbook. Cares about his students individually. Lots of group discussion.
Dr. Thomas is a guy that obviously cares a LOT about what he teaches. I'd encourage you to actively go out of your way to get him as a professor, he's just that nice of a guy. Caring, respectful, and humble.
Not any easy guy to work with. He lectures about pointless stuff, nothing to do with content. He assigns way to much reading for homework, and then wastes time during the lessons. Attendance is mandatory and wastes time. I had him last semester and he was a mess. No idea why he is rated so highly, maybe because his tests are open book?
Strict attendance policy. Long and boring lectures. Has favourites. Lots of useless homework.
Dr Thomas is one of my favorite professors. His class is engaging and he genuinely cares about each of his students. You will need the textbook because of chapter quizzes with key terms. All exams and quizzes are open note. If you have the opportunity to take him do it!
I LOVED professor Thomas. He is so caring and genuinely cares about his students input and thoughts. Everyone sits in group tables which makes classes heavily relied on group discussion. Almost every week you have to read a chapter from the text book and take a quiz but they are all open note including midterm and final. If you can take him do it!
He is genuinely the nicest professor I've ever had, he goes out of his way to get to know you and really just wants you to succeed as a teacher. He's super funny and tries to make class fun, there will be reading quizzes every week but you're allowed notes so it's super easy, notes on the midterm and final as well, I definitely recommend him!
He is a really sweet professor, but he has lots of readings and tends to cold-call, but it's to make sure everyone is participating. There are open note quizzes, one test and final and lots of group work and discussions.
Tim Thomas does a lot of cold-calling meaning he looks at the roster and chooses random people. He expects you to know the answer to every question. If you do not write notes you will fail every test or quiz because they are open notes. Even if you write down the whole textbook in your notes it still might not help you on the tests and quizzes.
He is genuinely so sweet and wants to get to know you! Weekly textbook readings with quizzes. The tests are open note, which is super helpful as long as you are using your resources and taking good notes. He will call on you, but you always have a lot of preparation, and it is never out of left field. Group project at the end, but is not bad!
He is a really nice guy, but he can be super boring. There are chapter quizzes based from the textbook pretty much every week and they are open note, but the questions are always super specific so you have to take a bunch of notes to make sure you will get the question. He's nice, but the class is mind numbing and really boring.
Dr. Thomas is super caring and genuine with his students. There are chapter quizzes that are 2-3 questions and short-answer based on the textbook every week, and they are open-note. There is a midterm and a final that are cumulative and open-note.
Needs to mind his own business. Attendance mandatory and expects participation, will single you out. Expect to read a lot of the textbook. Where you sit the first week is your permanent group for the year no matter how big or small. Quizzes every week, open note. Last project was a presentation. Take anyone else.
Dr. Thomas cold-calls but honestly, I think it's a great way to prepare freshman for the higher level courses that require participation. As a junior in the class, it did not really bother me as I always read the course textbook and was prepared for the weekly quiz. If you are taking this class next semester, take notes on EVERYTHING in the chapter
hes soooo nice. sometimes the class can feel like...why am i here this is a waste of my time, but he does require attendance. if you miss 3 or more he will dock ur grade (ex: you have an overall A but missed 3 = automatic A-, miss 4? = B+, etc). all his quizzes and exams are open note tho!!!! just go to class!
