i regret taking organic with him.not very helpful.lectures very boring, with slides on powerpoint and packets for you to follow the lecture.changes test format in the middle of the semester.practice tests not very helpful.
Awesome prof. for Chem102 but TERRIBLE for Organic. He doesn't teach, rather he just reads off his power point slides. You will retain nothing from his Orgo class. However, he's a very nice guy and will pass you no matter what as long as you show interest.
Great Professor. Orgo is a hard topic overall, so you'll need to study. His lectures are great though, they're especially helpful if you've looked over the material b4 class. His tests don't have crazy surprises on them, but you NEED to study.
Thomas was great for Chem 102, but TERRIBLE for Orgo I. He's also a jerk.
Dr. Thomas can't teach. He does not offer other examples of problems other than what is in the book. His practice exams are misleading and not helpful. The powerpoint he uses in class just reiterates whats in the book. I did better teaching it to myself.
he does not have a lot of back ground so he cannot explain things in deatail but he is an ok teacher but orgo is very very hard so you have to study day and night
Super nice guy, kind of weird but HE DOES NOT TEACH A DAMN THING. His practice tests resemble NOTHING of the real exam and you must memorize the book and teach yourself.Going to lecture is useless for the class but he remembers you if you miss, prob a C
Thomas can't teach, he is in his own little world of chem. and expects everyone else to be in it too, don't believe rumors that he curves and helps you out, he is stubborn has favorites and is very rough in dealing with students. Save yourself and GPA.
Organic is for serious students. I get the feeling most of these reviews are from people looking for something for nothing. I want to get in to med school-- I NEED THE REAL DEAL-- and Thomas is it.
Organic is a VERY difficult subject, but if you study hard and go to a couple discussion sessions and aren't afraid to use his office hours and ask questions, it is possible to get an A. He is very fair and lets you drop you lowest test grade!!!
All I have to say is TIMMMYYYYY!!! He teaches things so they make sense, not just so you have to memorize a bunch of stuff and he wants to give you an A. His tests are very straight forward and he gives tons of partial credit.
To the people who called Mr. Thomas the worst teacher ever: Why did you take him for both organic I AND II? Sounds more like sour grapes-- you can't handle organic and you're looking for someone to blame. Name calling shows how juvenile you really a
He was very easy to follow; went through the trouble to make slides for us second semester. If you read the book, go to all lectures, do all the problems, you should be right on target. I thought he's a cutie, but hell maybe that's just me.
I had to take organic twice and Mr. Thomas' class was so much better than the first one it's amazing. I don't think the people who complain know how hard organic can be with other teachers.
Very hard teacher, is out to get payback to all the undergrads, teaches right from the book, you learn nothing from his practice tests and even less from going to class.
Not a good teacher. Sure he knows his stuff but he can't convey it well. Teachers who's lecturing consists of merely reading off powerpoint slides should be banished. Good luck learning Organic on your own with only the help of the book & useless slides.
Aweful professor! A very young man, with little experience in teaching, who merely teaches out of the book, and is very unapproachable! You learn nothing from lecture, just go to the library and read the book, but a bad teacher overall. He favors nerds!
All of you that complain about Mr. Thomas(how hard he is & how he sucks as a teacher are so ridiculous.) If you only KNEW how hard other teachers make this class you'd thank him for trying to make it as easy as it could possibly be. orgo=notforeveryone
This is about as normal as it gets for college. If you go to class and study, you do well. If not, you fail. No suprises here. People blame him for their own shortcomings.
Mr. Thomas is great! He is a nice guy that's willing to help you with anything if you go to his post-discussion lectures. His tests are fair and he's not out to get you...highly recommended.
He made ORGO a less painful experience. His lectures are from the book because the its what you need to know to prepare for the MCAT. Its obvious he is passionate about chemistry if you just pay attention in lecture, he's not just reading slides.
I am shocked by these comments. It's unbelievable how ungrateful some of these people are. Organic is not an easy course anyway you look at it and if you are serious about a health profession or chemistry, you need to learn as much as possible about thi
Had him both sems, great professor, orgo itself is a self learned subject like spanish, go to class, take notes, ask questions, straightfoward, easy to approach, definite take, work hard on ure own but show him u put in the effort.
I think the same guy keeps saying the bad stuff, which is a shame because Mr. Thomas doesn't deserve it. Very consistent and helpful.
Not bad. Not very personable. Lectures are clear, and he tries 2 make the class interesting.(actually has a sense of humor)To do well in his class, u need 2 study hard on your own. Be prepared 4 lecture, do the readings and don't fall behind.Drop 1 exam
Great prof, very helpful, knows you by name out of 80 people. Makes chemistry very approachable. Nice guy. Hard class but tests are fair.
thomas is nice, but lacking personality. very smart. problem with class is he picks test questions that are a bit difficult, and hard to get an A on them. Teaches exactly off short note pages that he provides, meaning that going to class is kinda wasteful of time. Lot of independent learning
He is extremely smart and although it appears that he is unwilling to help you I urge you not to be affraid because the secret is that he doesn't bite. I'm currently taking his class and find his approach refreshing and very informative.Im really slow and a big procrastinator so take him.
Not an extremely intersting guy... but not an interesting subject either. Study and do fine... Don't and fail. Good curve on grades, 55%=C. 3 tests, drop one and 150 point final.
Generally, he's a little squirrely and nerdy, but he is so straight forward and refreshingly easy to understand, which is a great attribute in an orgo teacher. Make sure you don't miss too much class if you have a hard time understanding. I missed two days and struggeled to compensate. Decent guy
He's pretty lame. I hate his dumb jokes and nerdy hand gestures. Has no empathy when it comes to makeups even in the most extreme cases. I don't like how he touches me...
Horrible prof. Unclear most of the time. Exams are unpassable, and still won't offer extra credit. Not helpful and never there during office hours. Avoid him at all costs.

He is a recluse. He does not like to talk to people, and is very full of himself. His class is relatively easy, but don't expect any help from him. In fact, don't expect to ever see him outside of class unless you're lucky. Doesn't like people.
Easiest of all Organic teachers. But that doesn't mean he is easy. 6 Tests:3-take-home & 3-in-class. Tests are hard, but he curves a lot at the end of class. Very clear. Can teach much much much better than any other organic teacher. My first lecture worthwhile going to. Also, he isn't there for lab so your grade depends on your TA.
Although his tests are very hard, the class average is balanced through the 3 100 pt. take home exams. Even though he teaches ok, you have to read the book a lot. there is so much material that you have to keep track of. I thought he was better than the other older cranky professors in the chem.
perhaps if he wasn't so paranoid about everyone cheating & didn't waste his time checking this site all day, then MAYBE he can actually be there to help students!!!!
they said you could teach thomas
accused so many kids of cheating when they werent. he rips up tests. its kinda funny to watch a grown man do this. definitely not worth seeing this spectacle for a semester wasted. stick to the regular teachers and avoid him at all costs
One upset person keeps saying all the bad stuff but it's laughable. If you can't do well in Thomas' class, you can't do well in organic. Also, there was never any test ripped up. That was just a stupid rumor.
I agree with the last one. This class was fine. Not easy but not impossible. The complainers just want something for nothing.
he's okay

Anyone who complains about the quality of Prof. Thomas' class needs to realize they are in ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. It's not an easy class. Professor Thomas truly wants his students to do well, and provides straightforward tests w/o tricks. He does his best to be entertaining, which once again is hard in organic. Would DEFINITELY recommend to a friend.
Thomas is a good teacher. Yes the material can be tough, but if you stay on top of your studies you can do fine. I took it over the summer and survived. I didn't even feel all that stressed and I got a good grade. I would take this teacher again and I recommend him to anyone.

its a hard class, but then again it is orgo, a C goes down to about a 50% i think, and hes tests are straightforward. good teacher and id reccomend him
I really have no idea why this guys name is on the schedule thingy for this class. He is never there. The class is taught by TAs who do not even speak english. The class is not easy at all. Only take this class if you need to. If you don't need to, step away. It will only hurt you in the long run.
Tomas is great teacher, orgo is hard stuff but thomas teaches in way in which he is able to simplfy its complexity. Best orgo teacher ever. Curve very generously, which is much need for a crazy class like organic chemistry. Also you get one drop test a well. Thomas your the best!
Lab was time consuming.. u have to know Y u take certain steps in the labs for test as well as calcs and reasonin..Lecture is difficult dependin on how u learn. he doesn't do much practice and runs through things fast..it's like a foreign language & if u don't catch on ur lost!i'd try findin a teacher that does pract.problems & explains things well
Took both orgo I & II with him. His tests are straight forward and fair. He is also available to help but you have to seek for help. If you don't study everyday(Avg. of 2-3 hrs/day), no matter who you take with, it will be just as hard. This is one the classes you can't cram for, so be prepared to study daily and deligently.
Does not teach directly to the class. his teacher aids do. Also has this year to year let's accuse the students of cheating thing. He will help, when available. However, he is somewhat paranoid. Since all the mechanisms are the same, students likely to have very similar answers. This to him equals cheating. Other than that, labs are interesting
i took both labs with him.labs are easy to get either an A or B+ make sure u do good on them b/c the final exam is the hardest.even if he doesnt teach u the lab he will right the exam. make sure u know why u do each step and all mechanisms and the meaning of everything in the Exp. including the names of compounds before the final.its not imposible
Thomas explains everything well. This is a hard class but it's a little better with a professor who explains as well as he does.
best teacher ever!!!
Lab Assistants teach the whole class. Labs are straightfoward and easy. Lab questions are not too hard. The 2 lab exams would have been hard, but what made the exams easy was the fact that the study guide was last years exam. Quizes are given each lab, and are not too easy either. No need to read the bulky procedure section until before the exams.
Second semester lab for chem majors. Like last semester, Lab Assistants are in charge. Filling out the notebook is annoying. Quizes are ok, make sure you have a good table of reagants. Expect some experiments to last the whole time (1-3). Overall, instructions are not completely from manual and are unclear. Expect low or impossibly high yields.
Had him for Orgo I in the summer. Tim Thomas is a really good professor and a very nice guy as well. He wants his students to do well, no curveballs. Orgo in the summer moves quickly so there's not always time to go too in depth but he's very available to students to answer questions. He's pretty funny as well. Highly recomended.
i had him for the summer and thomas is a great professor. he cares a lot about his students and will always be there to answer questions. i would definitely recommend him.
He's barely ever in class, TA's do all the work. His tests are really hard sometimes he'll ask tricky questions or questions on things we never went over in lab. Asking for help is useless, he's rude and self righteous.
I am disgusted at his lack of teaching in the lab. I pay tuition for a teacher not a TA. I wish he used more energy into helping students rather than accusing them of cheating.
Good guy. He doesn't teach the class. TAs do all the work. But still, he manages "background work". 2 Exams (NO PRACTICAL, only THEORETICAL). Quizzes before each lab (they are on Black Board). 2 projects (one on IR spectra and 2nd one was about writing a procedure for lab). Overall ... EASY A/A-. :)
Easy labs. Quizzes are hard because they are so random. Midterm and Final was a killer. Overall easy A/A- if you study for the midterm and final. And I mean memorize everything for midterm. For final study lab and honestly know lecture things.
Orgo Lab I was fun and very interactive :) Orgo Lab II for some odd reason was very hard and the first test was impossible and very unfair. :(:( OrgoLabII had the work load of a 3 credit class. I wish Prof. would come into the lab and interact more with his students... Orgolabs helped me understand what we learned in lecture better.
CHEM 225 is a pretty easy class. The labs are easy and take usually an hour to do. There are 2 exams. The first one is an EASY practical. The second one is not too bad either. Tim Thomas does a good job explaining stuff, but doesnt stay for the lab. TA's are helpful. Every point counts, an A is a 95!!
CHEM 226 is not too hard of a lab. There's a lot of prelab work but the labs are straightforward. The exams are VERY HARD. The class usually averages a 60 on them so make sure you try as hard as you can. Also, there are 2 assignments, spectroscopy and a procedure you have to write. He never spent any time in lab, TA's do all the work
This guy is a waste of matter. His class is a joke because it depends on your TA's grading and not your work. Thomas hardly ever shows up to class, and when he does he makes it seem as if you are taking precious time away from his analysis of Wolfram Alpha. He smells like subway and makes really dry jokes. Easy A/A- though two exams + 8 quizzes
I took him for chem 225/226. I think. If he was ever there
Takes 45 minutes to explain how to make a password. I avoid asking him questions because when you do, he looks at you like youre stupid and smiles cunningly. very self righteous. TAs do ALL the work. He attempts at throwing a joke around here and there, though they are often not funny at all. I found him to be VERY rude and ignorant.
Pre-lab lectures are disorganized and rushed, and he's largely unavailable outside of class to help clarify. Labs themselves are interesting, however. Exams ("summary quizzes") are tough, mostly because they test the most random things. If you know every experiment forward and backward (don't rely too much on your notebook!) you'll be OK.
People need to chill out. Orgo lab is very similar to Gen Chem lab in that you rely on your TA more than the professor, the TA grades the homework and answers your questions during the lab. Though you should pay attention to his pre lecture (take notes) because he often gives better instructions than the manual. Class is easier than Gen Chem Lab.
RELAX. His explanations are THOROUGH. If he lectured I'd take him in a heartbeat. He makes crappy jokes, but knows what he's talking about & explains everything better than the manual he wrote! TAs are there after pre-lab lecture - if you have a bad experience it's probably your TA and not Thomas. Recommend this guy, esp. if you don't get Orgo.
Class is boring and very easy. His explanations are long and not of very much use. Will huff and be condescending when you ask a question. Huge eyebrow bones, they're very very weird check them out its like the overhang on a cliff. Class is boring. Thomas is nothing but an arrogant pot boiler.
points deducted for minor details, expect to be bored out of your mind the first 45 min of lab and you can ONLY miss 15 points total to get an A
You really don't see too much of him in orgo lab as you rely on your TAs for most everything but he is a pretty cool guy just wants to be sure no one messes anything up too bad before moving onto higher chemistry courses
you can't get any more clear or concise than his pre-lab Lectures. You are looking for a good professor not your best friend. Tim thomas makes you understand the lab. 2 exams. notebook eval. quizzes a toddler can do. I liked him, give him a shot.
His lectures can be long, but he is willing to help his students when asked questions. He is intimidating but does want everyone to do well in the course. He is a fair instructor, and much more attentive than other lab coordinators at Loyola.
It's a simple lab class. He explains the entire thing at the beginning to clear up any confusion. Just need to do pre-labs, post-labs, pre-lab write-up, and pay attention to pass the class. It's the easiest chemistry lab you'll probably take.
He is very stringent. Turn in something 0.04 seconds after the windows standard time beginning of class and it WILL be marked late. However, I really enjoyed this guy. He has these great quirky pieces of advice that stick with you.
Tim Tom is the man. Orgo lab is really simple if you can follow simple directions. Tim Tom is really quirky and funny. Just do the pre-lab, do the post-lab and follow the lab procedure well and you will get an A. He really does not want anyone to get hurt, so just wear your safety equipment and follow the lab directions. You will get an A.
Mr. Thomas is very intelligent and good at what he does but he is very strict with lab procedures. He cares about safety precautions A LOT so make sure you are doing what you are supposed to. Easy grading and clear layout for the class, pretty much the only orgo lab professor.
First of all, he hated me cause I ACCIDENTALLY broke a round bottom flask. So whenever I asked him a question, he would look at me like I'm a dum dum from some weird planet and never elaborate. So rule #1 DO NOT BREAK STUFF, and even if you do, just run away and don't tell him. Lastly, you can forget yourself but DO NOT forget your safety stuff.
He can be very rude and condescending when you personally go up to ask him a question. Left me feeling stupid one time over a simple procedural question for no reason. He's good at explaining the labs, but then he just disappears. I don't think he's a people person.
To be honest he's weird when you try to ask him a question, he has a very sassy way of responding. T.A's are your best best for help since he tends to disappear for majority of the lab period, which may be for the better because he can make you feel dumb for not putting on goggles or pulling out your phone, but he means well.
He is a little strange, but honestly he's a pretty easy going professor. I mean it's lab. There's not much he can do, but all of the quizzes and tests come from his videos online. He couldn't make it any easier, you just have to do what he asks. He is super strict about safety, but it makes sense. The syllabus is the same regardless of prof.
Really funny and honest guy, kind of soft-spoken but is very helpful if you ask questions or need help. One of the few people in the chemistry department who actually teaches very well and is conscious of his students, orgo chem lab is a blast! Just make sure to do your homework and familiarize yourself with the day's lab and you'll be fine.
People told me he's annoying and I agree. He always disappears during lab to his hole. Not very clear. People think he's okay but I think they feel bad for him. I don't know why he's rude acts super condescending when he's bad at what he does.
Thomas is honestly rude as heck. He acts like he hates his job and his students and so rude. Labs are short and easy but the midterm exam is HARD. Final was decent but beware of the midterm and the professor. The TA's are very helpful
He is a good lab professor. He can be annoying sometimes during lab because he just walks around and stares as you do your work and also calls you out for dumb things. Lab isn't hard the exams are pretty easy too if you review the practice test and you're notes.
As long as you read through the materials provided before lab and fill out your notebook accordingly, you will do well. Stay on top of things and do not fall behind. The second exam was a bit difficult, but as long as you review the content, you should be fine.
Thomas is a fine lab professor, lectures a bit at the beginning but leaves most observation to be done by TAs who are very helpful and kind. He can come off as rude at times but I don't think he means any harm. He's been teaching orgo lab for a while so I think he's just straightforward. He was also very understanding coming out of the pandemic.
Timmy tom is an acquired taste. I thought he was chill and had nothing but good experiences with him but other people say different. Beware of the final. He roasted us on that one ngl
Super nice guy, incredibly helpful. Only complaint is that he often will walk out of the room while you're doing your lab and my TA was unhelpful, so I sometimes felt stranded. But I blame that more on the TA.
Loved his orgo 1 lab, super simple, clear instructions, great TA's, usually out of lab within an hour, just lets you work and doesn't really bore you with the details. Graded on lab notes, safety and labsters which really boost your grade if you complete them. Make sure you look at the lesson and do the stuff before getting to lab so you are let in
Tim is a decent lab professor. Doesn't have super long pre-lectures. He's a little picky with lab notebooks but your entire grade is labsters and lab notebooks so you have a little cushion. Not a bad choice for orgo lab, but the quality of labs definitely depends on your TAs anyway.
Short prelectures and easy grader as long as you follow the lab notebook instructions and do the labsters. He was never in the class and just let the TA run it so just hope you get a good TA.
He was rarely present in class, which made the TA a more reliable resource. However, when he was in the room he was friendly and happy to discuss the content. He tends to go off on tangents when he lectures the pre-lab or when answering a question but I think that is just because he's excited about the content and enjoys what he does.
Great for chem labs. He is very clear on what you have to do and not harsh at all. Everything is submitted online and the workload is: prelab, notebook, and postlab. You can walk up and he's easy to talk to. One of the best chem lab professors. Literally am taking him again.
Didn't speak to this man once. I swear he wasn't even there during the labs sometimes. Don't worry about this professor, your only worry should be which TA you get stuck with.
Honestly your experience depends on your TA and lab partner that you do every lab with, I got lucky with both of mine. They're the ones assisting with lab and grading your notebooks, he's really only there for prelab notes about half the time. Notebooks are title, purpose, results, and procedure (which you write IN class). 2 lab reports. He's chill
He is def not an insanely nice guy and can be pretty condescending but once I spent one on one time with him he was totally fine, almost fun to be around. He loves talking about science but it doesn't seem like he enjoys being a lab coordinator (or being with college kids in a large group)
He was not a good teacher. He was very unclear in class and would often contradict his statements. He did not provide office hours for my class and only provided the class with a TA halfway through the first semester. He has almost no outside help or work. I would strongly advise not to take a class with him.
I actually had him for chem 160 idk why its not showing up. He is very nice and cares about the students/ wants us to succeed. Lectures can be kind of confusing sometimes I recommend reading the corresponding chapter. Also, the exams and quizzes are written by the company that the textbook makes, so study that more than the lecture.
Decent lab professor, lectures are brief, but TA quality is hit-or-miss. Use Unstuck AI for study prep - it's a helpful tool alongside the textbook. Overall, the class is manageable if you engage with the material.
This is for CHEM 242 lab. He's ok. He talks a lot which takes up a good chunk of class time and then you'll end up leaving lab later than expected. I always avoid asking him questions because he makes you feel stupid. I got a really good TA so she made up for him. 2 lab reports but 2nd one optional if you did well on the first.
CHEM 242, great professor who is passionate about what he teaches. Expectation is that you show up to lab having done a 3 question (unlimited attempt) quiz, then the other work is done before leaving. Can be a little hard sometimes when asking questions but it's not targeted and you have to not take it personally. Great guy 10/10 would recommend
He can be relatively difficult to work with when missing class, but he does genuinely care about the students. He is very efficient and grades very lightly when it comes to the lab reports and individual labs. If you miss a lab or two, you should be fine since he'll accomodate to what you missed.
He is a very easy going individual. I had him for the major specific CHEM 242 lab and he was super nice. His pre-lab quiz questions are from lab videos or procedure. The synthesis project was fun, but we only had time to complete one since one exploded and the other materials did not come in. He commonly cancels class almost once a week!
dude would disappear five minutes into class and would not return for the rest of the lab. it honestly depends on what TA you get because Thomas is barely ever around.
